deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • facebook deep-london • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...and welcome to issue 85. Well hello! Long time no see! Hope you all had a good Xmas and new year, and a not too penurious January. We’ve had quite a restful couple of months, if you don’t count heating failures, car breakdowns, many Wii injuries, a couple of spectacularly odd nights out and an ongoing big old row with Croydon Council, for whom we seem to have become the Batman to their Joker. Yes, quite restful. Still, it’s nice to be back. This month, love is in the air, and so accordingly we’ve gone all touchy-feely with some of our articles, including a fond farewell to Davy’s Wine Bar, an enthusiastic look ahead to the cricket (don’t worry, non-cricket-lovers, there’s booze involved!), a page of suggestions for Valentine’s nosh (again, involving much booze - can you see a pattern developing?) and, as mentioned previously, an entreaty for us all to try (I know it’s hard sometimes) to love Croydon and save it from devastating cuts to arts and culture. We’re also loving a bit of nature (not in a wrong way) and Auntie May continues her love/hate relationship with pubs’ smallest rooms. Yep, it’s all the old rubbish you know you all love, with some tenuous Valentine’s nonsense attached - never let it be said that we don’t attempt some sort of topicality when cobbling all this together. Elsewhere, there’s no ‘Where’s Groove?’ this month - he’s having a bit of time to himself with a young friend he met in the Brief (see month in pictures) but he’ll be around in March, when we’ll also give you the winners of the last couple of competitions. Also this month, we’ve the return of the Tony Hart Memorial Snow-Day Gallery as promised before Christmas. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how steady on your feet you are) the forecast snow-return never happened, but thanks to everyone who sent in their snowman pictures from our first flurry, we’ll try to get some more in next month, unless we suddenly find ourselves in the middle of a spring heatwave, in which case it might look a bit odd. Anyway, as I’m sure you can tell, I’m just rambling now. It’s very late/early and I have a headache from going through all the Council gubbins, so I’m off to bed. Have a happy and safe February, everyone, enjoy Valentine’s Day, whatever you end up doing, and we’ll see you all in March. Oh, and before I forget, because I haven’t seen you since the event - Happy New Year to you all! That’s it for now - pip-pip, avanti and allons-y! Angela xxx

We here at Deep-Towers don’t like cricket, we love it! And given that we did one of these articles for the overpaid, underachieving footballers (and because we won the Ashes last month - yeees!), welcome to the Deep Guide to the Cricket World Cup. Petal Dunwoody retrieves his ball from next door’s garden and gives us the low down, with cocktails, naturally...

T

he Cricket World Cup, which starts on the 19th February, is one of the greatest international sports events on the planet, with participants from all five continents. This year it’s being hosted by the cricket loving sub continent with fixtures in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. So important is it there that the citizens of Chittagong have been asked to paint their houses brightly in celebration of the event. Handily for us, the timings of the games are a bit more friendly than the Australian tour, with most games starting

at 9 or 10am, with only a few kicking off in the wee hours of 4am. For those that don’t know, the first Cricket World Cup was held in 1975 and the then dominant West Indies side were the first winners. Australia have won the last three tournaments. England have been finalists 3 times; their best performance coming in 1992 when defeated by a very good Pakistan side in the final. Whereas previous tournaments have suffered from having too many ‘dead rubbers’, this year’s format - with two

groups of 7 teams playing a round robin stage then the top two in each group going though to two semi finals - should maximise the number of meaningful games, or, in other words, it looks like it’s going to be a cracker. So who is going to win this time? Can Australia make it four wins in a row? (I for one hope not), will India do it on home soil and spark a major celebration or maybe one of the 1000/1 outsiders will make me richer? Let us guide you to the answer:

GROUP A: Australia ICC Ranking: 1

Bookies odds of winning: 11/2

Squad: Batsmen: Ponting (capt), Clarke, D Hussey, M Hussey, White. All-rounders: Hastings, Smith, Watson. Wicketkeepers: Haddin, Paine. Bowlers: Bollinger, Hauritz, Johnson, Lee, Tait. Star Player: Shane Watson. Great all rounder who opens the batting and is in good form. Deep Prediction: Semi-finalists. Is it rude to mention that they were thrashed in the Ashes again? Anyway, now they have picked the right bowlers they have looked a far better team, beating England in the recent one day series easily. The fast bowling is awesome but may go for a few runs as a result of their speed. Slow bowling may be a weak link and I expect them get beaten by either India or South Africa in the semis. Team nickname: ‘The Baggy Greens’ Cocktail: ‘No Shit Sherlock’ - Sherlock, Watson, geddit? Oh come on, Shane Watson gives it the that’s quite good! beans at the team karaoke... You will need: 1/3 oz Gin, 1/3 oz Vanilla Schnapps, 1/3 oz Watermelon Schnapps. Method: Layer ingredients in a shot glass in this order: Vanilla Schnapps. then Watermelon Schnapps. then Gin.

GROUP A: Canada ICC Ranking: n/a

Bookies odds of winning: 1000/1

Preliminary Squad: Ashish Bagai (capt), Ahmad, Aulakh, Akshay Bagai, Baidwan, Bastiampillai, Bhatti, Broadhurst, Cheema, Chohan, Davison, Desai, J Gordon, T Gordon, Gunasekera, Hansra, Jyoti, Kumar, Limbada, Osinde, Patel, Pervez, Rao, Manrick Singh, J Siddiqui, Z Siddiqui, Surkari, Tariq, Whatham, Zaheer. Star Player: Can’t think of one, sorry. Deep Prediction: An enthusiastic squad representing a seriously minority sport in the Americas. 7 of the squad have gone through the youth programme. 13 are making their World Cup debuts. They beat the Netherlands in recent warm up so their confidence is high. Cocktail: ‘Canada Drink’ - like the team, I’m afraid to say, not that exciting. You will need: 1 oz cherry brandy, 1 1/2 oz whisky, 1/2 oz lemon juice, 8 oz canada dry ginger ale Method: Pour the cherry brandy, whisky and lemon juice into a highball glass. Fill with ginger ale, garnish with a cherry, serve.

Is it just me or does the bloke on the far left with the wonky hat look like he’s a bit pissed and being held upright?

Kenya ICC Ranking: 13

Bookies odds of winning: 1000/1

Squad: Batsmen: Mishra, Obanda, R Patel, Tikolo, Waters. All-rounders: C Oboya, Kamande (capt), Odoyo. Wicketkeepers: D Oboya, Ouma. Bowlers: J Ngoche, S Ngoche, Odhiambo, Ongondo, E Otieno. Star Player: Again sorry but none spring to mind. Deep Prediction: Kenya were shock semi finalists in 2007 having beaten Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe on the way. Since then they have failed to progress and have probably played too few games at the highest level. Recently beaten by a Gujarat select 11 in a warm up game. Cocktail: ‘Long Shot’ You will need: 11/2 shots tequila, 1/2 shot Curaaao liqueur or Grand Marnier, 1/4 shot sugar syrup, 3/4 shot freshly squeezed lemon juice, 1 dash Angostura bitters, Top up with club soda. Method: Shake first five ingredients with ice and strain ice-filled glass. Top with soda, lightly stir and serve with straws. 5

GROUP A: New Zealand ICC Ranking: 7

Bookies odds of winning: 20/1

Squad: Batsmen: Guptill, How, Ryder, Taylor, Williamson. All-rounders: Franklin, N McCullum, Oram, Styris, Vettori (capt), Woodcock. Wicketkeeper: B McCullum. Bowlers: Bennett, Mills, Southee. Star Player: Daniel Vettori. Ranked number one bowler in the World in this form of the game. He has been their captain for many years and is their genuine all rounder. Very strong hitter at 8 or 9 and good fielder. Deserves a good tournament after his retirement from Test cricket. Deep Prediction: NZ have grown to be better in this form of the game than in tests. They are a competitive, hard working team lacking the firepower to regularly beat the best teams. They have been in the semi finals 5 times but have never progressed to a final. We predict the same. Team nickname: ‘The Black Caps’ Cocktail: ‘Kiwi Martini’ You will need: 3 oz vodka or citrus vodka, 1/2 skinned kiwi, 1/2 tsp sugar syrup, kiwi slice for garnish. Method: Muddle the skinned kiwi with sugar syrup in a cocktail shaker, Add ice and vodka, Shake well, Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, Garnish with a slice of kiwi.

Daniel Vettori - Depending on the light either looks like Louis Theroux or, for Croydon folk who know him, Stewart Watson. Seriously, he does!

Pakistan ICC Ranking: 6

Bookies odds of winning: 8/1

Squad: Batsmen: Ahmed Shehzad, Asad Shafiq, Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Younis Khan. All-rounders: Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi. Wicketkeeper: Kamran Akmal. Bowlers: Abdur Rehman, Saeed Ajmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz. Star Player: Shahid ‘Boom Boom’ Afridi. Looks a bit crazy on the pitch but probably the most exciting player in the game. Hits the ball miles and is a clever leg break bowler. Deep Prediction: Winners in 1992 and runners up in 2003 Pakistan have produced some of the game’s greatest players and are still strong contenders. The loss of their captain and best young fast bowler are heavy blows. They have good middle / latter order batting and will bowl well on these pitches. If Shoaib Akhtar is at his best they will be a greater threat to Sri Lanka and Australia. Losing to those two will put them 3rd in the group and out at that stage. Notoriously unpredictable. Afridi smacks another out of Cocktail: ‘Boom Boom Champagne’ - what else? the ground. They don’t call You will need: 1 shot sweet vermouth, 1 shot dark rum, 1/2 shot orange him ‘Boom Boom’ for nowt... juice, Champagne, banana slice. Method: Put the vermouth, rum and orange juice into a Champagne flute. Add in Champagne to fill. Garnish with slice of banana 6

GROUP A: Sri Lanka ICC Ranking: 3

Bookies odds of winning: 4/1

Squad: Batsmen: Dilshan, M Jayawardene, Kapugedera, Samaraweera, C Silva, Tharanga. All-rounders: Mathews, T Perera. Wicketkeeper: Sangakkara (capt). Bowlers: Fernando, Herath, Kulasekara, Malinga, A Mendis, Muralitharan. Star Player: Kumar Sangakkara. One of the modern great batsmen. Graceful and stylish he has scored almost 9000 runs in one day internationals. Scores his runs very quickly and can easily get away from the bowlers. He is both their wicket keeper and captain. Potentially one the stars of the tournament. Deep Prediction: Narrowly missing out in a semi final against India or South Africa - Winners in 1996 and runners up in 2007 this is a fabulous team in both forms of the game. Sangakara and Jayawardene are two of the best batsmen anywhere and the bowling attack is well suited to these pitches with great variation and shock value in Malinga. Our prediction is not based on any deficiency in the Sri Lankans, more that one or two teams may prove too strong.

Kumar Sangakkara does amusing ‘trip the other Cocktail: ‘Gin Sling’ - In honour of Malinga ‘the slinger’ batsman up’ celebration You will need: 1 1/2 oz gin, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice, 1 oz simple syrup, dash Angostura bitters, soda water Method: Pour the ingredients (except soda) into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into a chilled collins glass. Top with soda. Garnish with lemon twist.

Zimbabwe ICC Ranking: 11

Bookies odds of winning: 200/1

Squad: Batsmen: Coventry, C Ervine, Taylor, Williams. All-rounders: Chigumbura (capt), S Ervine, Lamb. Wicketkeepers: Chakabva, Taibu. Bowlers: Cremer, S Masakadza, Mpofu, Price, Rainsford, Utseya Star Player: Charles Coventry: young middle order batsman who promises to be their talisman, very aggressive scoring 194* in an ODI against Bangladesh. Has had disciplinary problems in the past. Deep Prediction: Should win a couple of games but knocked out in the first round - For a time in the 90s Zimbabwe looked as though they would get more and more competitive, particularly in one dayers. It’s a great shame that Zimbabwean cricket has suffered from arguments, the state of their country and other teams refusing to play in Zimbabwe. They are rebuilding and have some promising young players. Cocktail: ‘Red Hope’ - should be obvious, surely? You will need: 5 Parts Gin, 1 Part Apricot Brandy, 10 Parts Lemonade, 1 Dash Strawberry Syrup, 1 Slice Lime, 1 Leaf Mint Leaf, 1 Whole Strawberry Method: Fill a blender with ice cubes. Add all ingredients. Blend and pour into a chilled highball glass. Garnish with lime, mint leaf and a strawberry. 7

GROUP B: India ICC Ranking: 2

Bookies odds of winning: 7/2

Squad: Batsmen: Gambhir, Kohli, Raina, Sehwag, Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh. All-rounders: Y Pathan. Wicketkeeper: Dhoni (capt). Bowlers: Ashwin, Chawla, Harbajhan Singh, Kumar, Nehra, M Patel, Khan. Star Player: Harbajhan Singh. Great bowler, good lower order biffer and a tetchy competitor. Deep Prediction: Finalists - they would be major contenders anywhere in the world and home advantage makes them all the harder to beat. India won in 1983 and were runners up in 2003. The emergence of new players like Gambhir and Dhoni have strengthened the side. Tendulkar is nearing the end of his career and this greatest of modern batsmen will be motivated to achieve a fitting end to his career. Cocktail: ‘Madras’ You will need: 2 Measures Russian Standard Vodka, 3 Measures Orange Juice, 3 Measures Cranberry Juice Method: Build ingredients slowly over cubed ice to achieve red and yellow sunset effect.

Harbajhan Singh attempts to start an outfield rendition of YMCA

Bangladesh ICC Ranking: 9

Bookies odds of winning: 33/1

Squad: Batsmen: Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Mohammad Ashraful, Shahriar Nafees, Tamim Iqbal, Raqibul Hasan. All-rounders: Mahmudullah, Naeem Islam, Shakib Al Hasan (capt). Wicketkeeper: Mushfiqur Rahim. Bowlers: Nazmul Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Suhrawadi Shuvo, Abdur Razzak. Star Player: Shakib Al Hasan: rated 5th best one day bowler in the world. Deep Prediction: Mid table, out in first round – may surprise one of the big 4. They progressed to the super 6 stage last time after a famous victory over India. They are a stronger side now with some very good international players. Upper order batting may be a bit vulnerable to the best attacks but the bowling will suit the conditions. Home support will be overwhelming. Cocktail: ‘Bengal Tiger’ You will need: 1 1/2 oz brandy, 1/2 oz maraschino liqueur, 1/2 oz triple sec, 1 oz pineapple juice Method: Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass.

GROUP B: England ICC Ranking: 5

Bookies odds of winning: 9/2

Squad: Batsmen: Strauss (capt), Bell, Morgan, Pietersen, Trott. All-rounders: Bresnan, Collingwood, Wright, Yardy. Wicketkeeper: Prior. Bowlers: Anderson, Broad, Shahzad, Swann, Tredwell. Star Player: Graham Swann. If recovered from injury his bowling will tie up the batsmen and pose a wicket taking threat and he can score quickly down the order. Deep Prediction: Just losing out in the groups stage - 2020 world champs and ashes winners but there are three factors underpinning our gloomy prediction: 1) we have just been completely outplayed by the Aussies in the one day series; 2) so many injuries to key players; 3) the Indians and South Africans are brilliant teams. Our bowling seems good but the batting can be brittle. Cocktail: ‘Champion’ - positive thinking is all! You will need: 3 Parts Dry Vermouth, 3 Parts Scotch Whisky, 2 Parts Benedictine DOM, 2 Parts Orange Curacao Method: Add all ingredients into a chilled cocktail glass.

GROUP B: South Africa ICC Ranking: 4

Bookies odds of winning: 5/1

Squad: Batsmen: Amla, Duminy, Du Plessis, Ingram, Smith (capt). All-rounders: Kallis, R Peterson. Wicketkeepers: De Villiers, Van Wyk. Bowlers: Botha, M Morkel, Parnell, Steyn, Tahir, Tsotsobe. Star Player: Morne Morkel. Very tall out and out fast bowler with a lot of bounce. Averages under 25 runs per wicket in ODIs. Deep Prediction: Finalists - 60/40 winners - Semi finalists in 1992, 1999, 2007. They have the first ranked batsmen in the world, Hamish Amla and an aggressive pack of bowlers with Steyn one of the best in the world. Kallis is an amazing player who is also at the end of his career. The group match with India will give a clear view of which team is the most likely to take the cup. Cocktail: ‘Cape’ You will need: 1 1/2 oz gin, 1/2 oz Red Dubonnet, 1/2 oz orange juice Method: Shake in iced cocktail shaker and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with cherry.

West Indies ICC Ranking: 8

Bookies odds of winning: 20/1

Squad: Batsmen: Barath, DM Bravo, Chanderpaul, Gayle, Sarwan, DS Smith. All-rounders: DJ Bravo, Pollard. Wicketkeeper: Baugh. Bowlers: Benn, Miller, Rampaul, Roach, Russell, Sammy (capt). Star Player: Chris Gayle. A giant hitter, if he lasts more than 10 overs West Indies will post good scores. Deep Prediction: Will just miss out of the semi finals - They won the first two cups and were in the first three finals but they have had a slow decline in both forms of the game. The team is better than it has been for some time but they still suffer from inconsistency and a slightly suspect bowling attack. Cocktail: ‘Rum Punch’ - what else? You will need: Orange juice, Pineapple juice, 1 1/2 oz. rum, Dash of bitters, Dash of simple syrup, Orange slice Method: Fill a glass with ice and pour in the rum, add a dash of bitters and a dash of simple syrup, fill the remainder of the glass with equal parts pineapple and orange juice, stir and garnish with an orange slice.

GROUP B: Netherlands ICC Ranking: 12

Bookies odds of winning: 750/1

Squad: Batsmen: Cooper, De Grooth, Kervezee, Swarczynski, Zuiderent. All-rounders: Borren (capt), Bukhari, Ten Doeschate. Wicketkeepers: Baressi, Buurman. Bowlers: Kruger, Loots, Raja, Seelaar, Westdijk. Star Player: No one leaps out. Deep Prediction: Will struggle to win a game - A major achievement to get to the finals for the first time. There is a strong tradition of Cricket in Holland with some Dutch players having played cricket for English counties, the most successful being Roland Lefebvre who played for Somerset and Glamorgan. Cocktail: ‘Dutch Courage’ You will need: 1 shot Bombay Sapphire London dry gin, 1 shot advocaat, 3/4 shot Freshly squeezed lemon juice, 3 shots apple juice Method: Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into ice-filled glass. Garnish with lemon slice. The Dutch team, clutching at straws by draughting in what looks like an ageing Denis Bergkamp

Ireland ICC Ranking: 10

Bookies odds of winning: 500/1

Squad: Batsmen: E Joyce, Porterfield (capt). All-rounders: Botha, Cusack, Johnston, Jones, K O'Brien, Van der Merwe, White. Wicketkeepers: N O'Brien, Wilson. Bowlers: Dockrell, J Mooney, Stirling, Rankin. Star Player: Ed Joyce: talented batsman once on the fringe of the England side. Deep Prediction: May frighten one of the bigger teams but likely to get just one win - Last time they drew with Zimbabwe and beat Pakistan to get through to the second stage. They are currently rated higher than Zimbabwe and may prove hard to beat. Maybe worth a punt in one game. Cocktail: ‘Black Velvet’ - had to be really, for celebration purposes in case they win a game. You will need: Half Guiness, Half Champagne Method: Pour the chilled Guiness and Champagne into a tall glass. Do not stir. This takes some skill because the two drinks should be poured at the same time.

Ed Joyce - saving 4 runs or engaging in a bit of boundary break-dancing? You decide.

V

alentine’s Day. I have to say we at Deep Towers aren’t great fans, but whether you’re single or attached, we reckon it’s a good excuse to have a nice meal, so with that in mind, this year we’ve got some suggestions for a three course affair. Of course, it being us, there’s quite a lot of booze involved... Aperatif - Happy Heart Cocktail: This award winning recipe won the Grey Goose mixologist competition and belongs to Canada's Premiere Mixologist, David Wolowidnyk. You will need: • 6-8 white grapes • 1.5 parts Vodka • dash of Lemon juice • 2 parts White wine • 1 part Elderflower syrup • cocktail shaker Method: Put 6-8 white grapes into your mixing glass, muddle (slightly squish) them, then add the vodka, dry white wine, elderflower syrup and a dash of lemon juice. Fill the mixing glass with ice, put shaker on and shake it. Strain into a pre-chilled cocktail glass. Use a strainer with filter, so the grape bits don’t go into the glass.

Starter - Easy oysters for people who don’t really like oysters on their own: Like me, in fact. You will need: • fresh ginger • rice wine vinegar • fresh red chilli • sugar • fresh coriander • fresh oysters • ice You can get your fishmonger to open the oysters for you or you can freshly shuck (open) them with a small knife or oyster-shucker, using a tea towel to hold them. Insert your knife (carefully!) and wiggle it about ‘til they open.

Main Course - Whisky Steak: This recipe is for one, so vary the quantities accordingly. You will need: • sirloin steak • 25g (1 oz) butter • 1 medium onion, chopped • 125g (5 oz) double cream • salt and pepper • 5 tbsp whisky Method: • Heat the butter in a pan, cut the beef into thin strips and cook it with the onion for 5-10 minutes, until brown and to your taste. Pour the whisky over it, and stir in the cream. Allow the sauce to reduce a little before serving.

Always eat oysters the day that you buy them Method: • Finely grate 1/2 a thumb-sized piece of peeled ginger • Mix with 6 tablespoons of rice wine vinegar, 1 finely chopped and deseeded red chilli and a little finely sliced fresh coriander. • Stir in a teaspoon of sugar until dissolved. • put ice in a tea-towel and bash it on a table top to break it up. Put the crushed ice in a shallow dish and put your open oysters on top. • Serve the dressing in a separate dish and spoon over the oysters as required.

Main Course / Side Dish Amaretto Spinach Salad: Makes enough for 8 servings This salad has bacon in it but veggies feel free to leave it out and use more olive oil to cook with. Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes Total Time: 25 minutes You will need: • 2lb / 900g spinach (4 bunches) • 1lb / 450g bacon, diced • bit of olive oil for frying • 2 large cloves garlic, crushed • 1/2 cup / 120ml red wine vinegar

1/2 cup / 120ml lemon juice 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/4 cup / 120ml Disaronno® Amaretto • Salt and pepper to taste • 1/4lb / 110g mushrooms, sliced • 1 small red onion, sliced Method: • Wash spinach. Remove large stems and tear into bite-size pieces. Store in plastic bags in refrigerator until ready to use. • Place bacon in a large frying pan. Cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until bacon is crisp and all fat is rendered. Remove bacon, reserve 1/8 cup bacon fat, discard rest. Return bacon fat to skillet and add oil, garlic, wine vinegar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, Amaretto, salt, and pepper. Simmer until blended. When ready to serve, place spinach, mushrooms, red onion, and reserved bacon in large salad bowl. If you like a wilted salad, pour the dressing over very hot; if not, let cool a bit before serving; toss well.

• a pinch sea salt • a splash of brandy, or rum, or amaretto, or whisky, or red wine even • a handful of mixed nuts (Brazil nuts, toasted almonds and hazelnuts) • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder, to serve • 1 pack biscotti, to serve (optional) Method: • Put the cream in a pan over a medium heat and let it heat up. You don’t want it boiling, just hot. As soon as tiny bubbles start to appear add the knob of butter and the clementine zest. • Once the butter has melted pour this hot mixture over the chocolate pieces whisking as you go so the chocolate melts nice and slowly. If the mixture splits slightly, don’t worry, you can bring it right by adding a splash of boiling water. • Add a pinch of salt to the mixture; it may sound odd, but the smallest pinch of salt makes chocolate taste chocolatier. • Stir in a splash of brandy (or your other chosen booze) • Once completely melted and smooth, pour your melted chocolate mixture into a nice little serving dish or bowl. Pop this in the fridge for about 2 hours to set. You can always do this a few days before you need it if you want. About 30 minutes before you’re ready to make your truffles pull the bowl out of the fridge and let the chocolate warm up to room temperature. • Put your mixed nuts into a plastic bag and use a rolling pin to bash them up quite finely. • Get some little saucers or bowls and put the nuts in one and your cocoa powder in the other. • Put a teacup filled with boiled water

Dessert - DIY Chocolate Truffles: Chocolate, booze, DIY, what’s not to like?

on the tray and pop a few teaspoons in there for scooping the chocolate. • Spoon your own truffles out of the serving dish and roll them in cocoa powder, crushed nuts or anything else you fancy. Or smear the truffles over a biscotti (or anywhere you like, frankly) like some posh Nutella. After Dinner - Carajillo: Fantastic Spanish after dinner boozy coffee. You will need: Per person • 7g ground coffee • Brandy 2 cl • 1 piece of lemon rind • 1g coffee beans Method: • To a heatproof glass, add the brandy, lemon rind and coffee beans. Heat the glass gently, then CAREFULLY! - light the brandy (recommend long kitchen matches or the like). • Let the flame burn itself out then strain into an espresso or cappuccino cup/glass. • Meanwhile, make a strong espresso with the ground coffee. • Pour the coffee into the cup with the brandy. • Add sugar if required.

There you go then, a few ideas for you. I’d like to say this is what’ll I’ll be eating / drinking on Valentine’s Day but I’m getting away from it all at Plumpton watching some ‘orses. Quite frankly, though, if you manage to do anything ‘romantic’ after all the booze included in this article, then you’re a better man than me, Gunga Din, and if you’re single, chances are by now you won’t care. Whatever you end up doing, have a happy pro / anti Valentine’s Day!

You will need: (makes about 50 teaspoon-sized truffles) • 300ml double cream • a knob of unsalted butter • finely grated zest from 1 clementine or orange • 300g good-quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids), broken into small pieces 14

ossibly one of the most misleading headlines ever, in that we actually haven’t got many memories of Davy’s Wine Bar, which closed it’s doors this month after 37 years, due to the huge amounts of booze always consumed within. For anyone who never went, Davy’s was, from the street, an unassuming doorway near Marks & Spencer on North End, whose steps led down to a basement of bacchanalian delight, with sawdust on the floor, wine aplenty, a beer called ‘Gnats Piss’ and, invariably, a shed load of civil servants (of which I was once one) taking advantage of the lack of mobile reception to get utterly smashed during work hours. In fact, one of the few memories I retain is fire-drill days, back when being a civil servant was bearable and sometimes even fun, when everyone would bolt down to Davy’s confident in the knowledge that they couldn’t be contacted to be told when the drill was over and we could go back to the office (see also Rue St George, the George and the Brief for similar purposes). However, Davy’s was more than just a work-avoidance strategy - many an after work session started and fuzzily finished in Davy’s, and an afternoon spent shopping down that end of town could be merrily interrupted, and invariably halted, by descending the steps. And they did a good bit of grub and had a terrific quiz night, which in fact, was what they staged on their last ever night, 2nd Feb 2011. As usual, civil servants abounded, a mixture of friends I hadn’t seen for years and those I see regularly, and one total stranger, who we’ll call Mr X, a mid-thirties civil servant who was already battered on port when we arrived at about 7pm, and who later fell off his chair onto the floor and loudly announced to everyone in the bar that he’d never had sex - a fact that was gleefully passed on to the paramedics when they turned up to take him away, and after which brief interlude the quiz merrily carried on. Never a dull moment in Davy’s, which is why we loved it. It was actually quite an upmarket place, but upmarket in the way you’d imagine a London drinking club of old was out of the way, unassuming, relaxed, friendly, tolerant, sometimes completely insane, but always a good day / night out. Apparently, it shut merely because it wasn’t making enough money, a fact we lay directly at the feet of the civil service firstly for not having a pay structure that will support the need to get absolutely blasted on (relatively) expensive wines every day, and also on the fact that, as I gather from people who still work for it, it’s just not that sort of operation any more. I’m glad I got out when I did, but seeing everyone down in Davy’s for one last time did bring a pang of nostalgia for those days, which says more about the fondness we all held the place in than anything else. Of course, Davy’s wasn’t only for the CS, it was for anyone seeking an oasis in the heart of town - a quiet drink, a spot of lunch, an evening of (mostly) civilisation. Never any trouble, never any grief, a wave to the stuffed badger on the way to the toilets and a stagger out, blinking into the light, several hours later safe in the knowledge that there was an alternative to ‘alcohol alley’ further down the road. At least there was, but now it’s goodbye Davy’s - yet another grown up, civilised, character-filled bar has disappeared from Croydon’s streets - you will be sorely missed. x

You may think these pictures are a bit blurred and a bit wobbly, and you’d be correct, but it’s just our cinema verité way of showing anyone who never went how most of the denizens of Davy’s saw it, especially on the way out. And THAT is our story and we’re sticking to it. 16

s you’ll know, we at Deep don’t get involved in politics, and we’re not getting involved in it now. I think it’s important to say, before this article, that we couldn’t give a monkey’s who’s in charge, the only thing we’re interested in is this borough (and surrounds!) - its art, culture, heritage, people etc - in fact, exactly the same things we’ve been interested in and promoting for the last 8-odd years, so when all of those things are threatened, regardless of who by, we think it’s our duty to point it out and at least try to do something about it.

L

et’s begin at the beginning of this whole sorry saga shall we and briefly whizz through the story so

far. • 22/11/2010 - Consultation on arts and Heritage Funding Cuts published to Croydon Council (CC) website. • 06/01/11 - Consultation closes. • 13/01/11 (date not exact due to no publication publicity - this is when we found out about it) - Initial results published - 74.7% of respondents oppose ‘option 4’, the most swingeing cuts • 20/01/11 (date not exact, see above) Full report published. Council propose Option 4 cuts, to be put before Cabinet on 24/01 • 21/01/11 - E-mail sent by us to Scrutiny Committee detailing our concerns about the consultation i.e. The consultation document was not properly publicised, The results of the consultation have been buried on the council website, the results the of the consultation are staggering, with the council having opted for the option that 74.7% of respondents absolutely opposed, the well reasoned and well thought out suggestions made by the public on the consultation document have not been properly looked into, issues surrounding plans to lease out Clocktower, therefore implying that it must be financially viable, timescale issues. • 24/01/11 - Stop Arts & Heritage Funding Cuts Petition goes live (about 4.30pm). 100 signatures needed to make it formal. This achieved at about 6pm. Cabinet meeting commences 6.30pm. Council push through option 4 cuts. • Thanks to everyone signing the petition, decision referred to Scrutiny Committee for 08/02/11 meeting (“The role of Scrutiny & Overview Committee is to scrutinise the Council's work furthering the economic, social & environmental well-being of the community it serves & to examine issues which impact on the community's well-being.” CC Website).

Option 4 cuts approved. And that’s where we are. The Scutiny meeting was, quite frankly, unbelievable, but don’t take my word for it, here’s a report from a Deep-London reader who was an observer there: “ I attended the Scrutiny and Overview committee on the 8th February. I went to support the Deep London campaign to have arts and heritage cuts stopped, the first stage of which is to get the Cabinet’s decision to cease almost all arts and heritage funding in the borough referred back to them for reconsideration - the apparent function of the Scrutiny and Overview Committee. We walked to the meeting in high, if

speak - is suave, well rehearsed and oleaginous. He should go far in politics. After an hour and a half, in which at least the kids in the gallery were having a laugh, it came to the vote. And of course the cuts go through with one or two suggestions of detail. Not a lot of scrutiny, not a lot of passion from the committee members and a bit of a desultory, almost embarrassed show of hands. It looks like a stitch up. (all that training as a parliamentary journalist was not wasted) Finally, fag break and stretch, a chance for our mighty editor to check the amendments to her speech and in we go. Angela’s ushered into the chamber, me back upstairs. Only about 5 people in the gallery this time. I have to stand up and

The Council have not done their job in looking for alternatives to closure, let’s do our job and try to protect culture in Croydon, God knows there’s little enough of it nervous spirits. The reasons given in the referral letter to this committee seemed so strong: it cites five core policy areas directly contravened by the cuts; it states that it is inconsistent with the budget as the grants Croydon receives for arts & other revenues would have to repayed; and it gives good alternatives, particularly looking at back office costs. We go in to the fine hall on Katherine Street. The staff are very helpful and the atmosphere is cordial. Some canapés and a table of wine would have been nice. The cuts in youth services were also being challenged at the meeting and they were up first. The public gallery was lively with some heckling and cheering for those invited to address the committee. What I first noticed about the councillors on the committee is that on the face of it they are a diverse group in terms of age, gender and race. The chair of the youth committee responds to passionate speeches against the cuts - a couple of nervous kids bravely 18

lean over the balcony to see her in action. I thought one of the officials was taking pictures but apparently this was timer for the three minutes she had to speak. The chair keeps looking up at me as I loom. The reasons for the referral are read out and I think “how can they not refer this back?’. Councillor Bashford, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Culture & Sport, and the author of the original decision, replies. They have to make the cuts, unwillingly, because of the budget. They have saved what they can but core services must take precedent over discretionary ones. There is talk of the budget and now the obfuscation begins. The basic question raised was around what savings are being made from closing the 5 buildings and leaving them empty? The chief exec of the arts team acknowledges that keeping them shut will cost money anyway. Neither the question nor the answer was clear and a very important

• Museum of Croydon - The council wanted it closed, then realised that would mean them having to pay back £1m to the Heritage Lottery Fund for its grant for the development of the museum. So now they want to ‘retain a small museum service’ purely to keep the grant. The HLF can still require them to pay it back if they don’t agree with the ‘new’ museum

• Croydon Summer Festival - costs just £150k to put on, attended by 50,000 people, a genuinely inclusive community event, one of our few success stories and something in Croydon of which to be genuinely proud. Apparently the loss of this service, for people aged 19-65, will have ‘no specifically identified negative impact’

• Libraries - all of these could be closed, or a combination of some of them. That consultation closes on 20th Feb. Have your say - for all the good it’ll do. Hit the ‘view all current consultations’ link on the www.croydon.gov.uk home page

• Community Halls. Despite recognising that closing community halls will have a negative impact on everyone, it goes ahead. Costs are still incurred for empty buildings. Mooting of Stanley Halls being ‘leased to third party’.

• Youth services - £2 million of cuts

• Clocktower - innovative arts programme to be completely cut - one 19

issue is left to pass. Then the moment we have all been waiting for, our beloved leader speaks! There is a slight wobble in the voice, but the message comes out clear and sound, well argued and with a sense of pride and frustration. Points she makes about the process of the consultation, the waste, loss of pride, 2012, the cost of outside consultants all deserve answers and to at least make the council reconsider. There are approving grunts and nods around the committee table throughout and hearty applause at the end. Soon after the labour representative speaks and strengthens the points made. The whole thing then decays into mush. We have one clear answer – that the council reserve is not £50 million – but otherwise the argument and comments are largely content free. The majority of the rest of the discussion is not even about the arts but about ensuring certain buildings are safe. One councillor does make a good suggestion that the David Lean cinema space could be used for other activities as well but this is barely acknowledged by the chair. We believe that there is huge commercial opportunity for the borough with the arts infrastructure. The councillors are unwilling even to discuss this. The only suggestion of actually doing something to make money was that we should hire a consultant to help us – amazing given Angela had already asked about how much consultants cost the borough for what benefit. (if the cost of consultants comes to around £150k I think we all need to ask what they have delivered that is better for the borough than the festival?) This time there is barely even a vote but there is half an hour of chat about the wording of a recommendation to keep Stanley Halls safe while it’s in the hands of much mentioned ‘3rd parties’ who the council are in talks with to sell off the Hall to, I mean take over the running of the Hall... The most galling moment comes at the end when councillor Bashford is asked to answer the remainder of Angela’s points. The councillor is patronising in the extreme - if we want to benefit from the Olympics why not volunteer - despite frantic hand waving Angela is not permitted to speak again to clarify. The committee seems diverse but in fact they are all largely the same (with a couple of noble exceptions). There is no feeling that any of this makes a blind bit of difference to their lives. It is all too comfortable, too supine. They believe their own press and tow the line that cuts

have to be made even if, as in this instance, doing so may well cost more than it saves. Local democracy, which I fervently support, seems to have decayed into flaccid self service. For the politically ambitious (of whatever colour) this and other councils seem like a lower league Belgium football club who develop young players to be swept up by the big leagues. This was a paper exercise to validate rather than scrutinise the cuts. The decision to get rid of Arts staff had been made before the consultation was even issued. It was a done deal. There is a theme that if not the arts then the elderly (services for them we hear are being outsourced anyway) or children will lose vital services. This divisive tactic is something we have to be united to oppose.” And there you go. They weren't listening, and missed the point completely on the Olympics thing - the point I was making is that Croydon is desperate to attract investment, and we have probably the biggest event of our lifetimes happening next year, down the

Remind the Council that the people of Croydon will not forget or forgive... road, with direct transport links. There will be A LOT of people staying here to get there, and instead of using it as a massive opportunity to impress people, change the perception of Croydon and probably make quite a bit of cash through well thought out events, instead we’ll have no mainstream cultural output and a big old empty Clocktower. Imagine what the 2012 Summer Festival could’ve been... Of course, we’re not only opposed to these cuts for investment and financial reasons, but I thought I’d raise them as it’s all CC seems to be interested in. We still believe that there is no reason for these massive cuts - CC DOES have a reserve fund that could be utilised, the Clocktower, David Lean, Community Halls etc COULD be made to be financially viable given better management, better marketing, a more imaginative approach. Closing these things will STILL cost money, and Councillor Bashford, when asked, couldn’t say if when the financial climate changes, these services could ever be resurrected. The Summer Festival costs a mere £150k, is the most successful thing Croydon has EVER done, is something that is fully inclusive and something of which Croydon can be proud. It’s a great 20

showcase - people even come from abroad to attend, they have a good time, they go back home thinking that maybe Croydon isn’t the knife-crime shit-hole our local press would have us believe. The general gist of Cllr Bashford’s argument for the cuts is that WE will fill in the culture gaps, indeed, she cited this magazine as showing how much culture we have, being done by us, and how we don’t NEED the Clocktower (and yes, I nearly did stand up and walk out at that point). To be honest, there isn’t enough room is this entire magazine to go through everything that’s being cut and the reasons it shouldn’t be but you’re intelligent people, you know the score this isn’t over, people. The petition runs until 13th Feb (http://doiop.com/ahcuts) and I’d urge you all to sign. I don’t think we’re going to get the required number to force a full Council meeting, but then having attended the last one, they’re just playground slanging matches anyway. No, what you can do is get bloody angry and write a letter or e-mail to your local Conservative Councillor, pressuring them to vote against the budget when it comes to be discussed on 21st Feb. Urge them to release some of the council's reserves to support arts and heritage through the difficult current economic situation instead of taking a short term view that will destroy (probably permanently) so much that is good in Croydon. Remind them that this is THEIR decision, and the people of Croydon will not forget or forgive what they are planning to do. Pushing the point that they alone can stop these cuts is also really important. Head of Council Cllr Fisher is under a lot of pressure from his group. More pressure may well work. We know already that our efforts have resulted in much headless chicken running about in the council and concerns that there would be a row about these issues. Well there is a bloody row about these issues. The Council have not done their job in looking for alternatives to closure, the Scrutiny Committee have not done their job in rubber-stamping cuts directly contrary to their own policies, let’s do our job and try to protect culture in Croydon, God Knows there’s little enough of it, let’s try to hang on to it. If anyone wants to see any of the documents relating to all of this, we have them. hat’s right, it’s that time of year again, time for the annual Testing 123 unsigned music competition / bunfight at The Clocktower. As usual, over 4 nights, a host of singer/songwriters, urban acts and bands will battle it out to become Croydon’s finest unsigned talent and grab a host of goodies. What’s unusual this year though, is if the Council have their way and shut the Clocktower, this’ll be the last ever Testing, leaving a big old gap and one less opportunity for young people (as well as local heroes) to be seen and heard by some of the music industry’s top movers and shakers. Yet another reason why the Clocktower must be saved... But I digress. This year, as with all others, the talent is made up of a mixture of established local acts, Testing stalwarts and bright young things, all judged by a panel of experts, local luminaries and bright but generally not so young, things. It’s always a great few nights out, we’ve had some great people win it who’ve gone on to do great stuff, like Size Nine and Joe Hood, some great local stalwarts in it like Junk Time Party and Jon Bishop in one of his many incarnations, and the hook remains the same, in that everyone has to cover the same song to impress the judges. It’s a great idea and has thrown up some pretty memorable covers from the likes of Robbie Williams to Prince. I don’t know what this year’s cover is, but I look forward to finding out (maybe, given the current situation, a rousing rendition of ‘I Will Survive’?). This year’s hopefuls are singer/songwriters Heyzelda, Jason James, Josh Mills, Mark Bishop, Mikey G and Sweet Ambition (22nd

If you’ve always thought about going, but never got around to it, this may be your last chance, and for all everyone I see regularly supporting the event year after year, I’ll see you at the bar for a last massive celebration of one of our most innovative nights out. 21

allows more water take up. • Never bash the stems, this destroys cell structure meaning they won’t be able to drink. • Always use the flower food provided. Old wife solutions like asprin, bleach or lemonade will kill rather than cure. As for the old thing of adding a bit of gin or vodka, what the hell are you thinking? Don’t waste it on plants, neck it! • Keep the water topped up and change it after a week, make sure there are no leaves or petals floating in the water.

What to plant now: I’ve got a luvverly bunch of, erm, flowers:

I

t’s Valentine’s Day this month, as if any of us can have failed to notice, and you may be lucky enough to get a nice bunch of flowers from your significant other, lovingly purchased from the petrol garage on the way home. If you do, and you want to keep them looking their best for as long as possible, here are some tips from the Flowers and Plants Association for just that: • If the bouquet has been delivered in a water bubble (aqua pack) make sure you change it – it might look pretty sitting in its wrap but this is for transportation only, not-long term display. Transfer your flowers to a clean vase with fresh water at the earliest opportunity. • Remove any foliage that will sit below the waterline, as this can cause infection. • Never break thorns off, this exposes the stem to infection. If necessary simply snip the sharp points off. • Cut the stems with a sharp knife or secateurs and at a sharp angle 2cm from the bottom - the sharper the better as this

Not a lot to plant this month except Onions: You have two options if you want to grow onions – either seeds or onion sets. Seeds speak for themselves, but sets are small onion bulbs that can be planted in the ground to sprout. Whichever you choose, you should use a cloche to keep them warm, and only start planting around the middle of the month, so a couple of weeks from now.

Creature-Watch: It’s all about the birds and the bees this month, in all senses. It’s February, and the sap is starting to rise, so start to think about nesting boxes. Bird nesting boxes: Put up nesting boxes for birds, to increase their choice of nesting sites. You could hang a nest box opposite a window, in the hope of seeing the mother coming and going from the nest. Boxes hung on walls can be safer from cats and other predators than those hung on trees. A north or north-east facing position is best, as strong sun can make nest boxes uninviting. Choose a height suitable for the bird species in your garden, after doing a little research. Bee nesting boxes: Bumblebees! These nesting boxes are a bit more tricky, but generally the entrance needs to be near the ground and bedding has to be provided by you, bees don’t collect their own - lazy buggers. Too much to go into here but there’s a wealth of info on buying bee boxes or making your own on the web, just do a search for bee nesting boxes. Bzzzzz.

Watch The Skies! With Astronomy Corner. Not a lot going on in the skies in February, so we’ll say TARAA! to Jupiter: The bright star in the southwest after sunset is Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. It's been in the sky for several months, but right now it is sinking into the twilight and won't be around for very much longer until later in the year. It's worth looking at it through binoculars, as you should see three or four of its moons like tiny stars on either side of it. With a telescope you can see a couple of its dark equatorial belts as well. It'll be around in the western sky for another few weeks, but then it will start to get lost in the twilight. 22

W

ell hello again, fellow Croydonites. May I take this opportunity to wish you, albeit it rather late, a happy and healthy 2011. I’d wish you a wealthy 2011 too but I’ve never been one for inviting failure. I’ve never been so pleased to see the back of December and January cashwise (is it a coincidence that Santa is an anagram of Satan?), but sadly February looks like carrying on in the same vein. “Well Auntie May”, I can hear you ask, “What the devil have you been up to recently?” Well I’m glad you asked. Apart from the usual staying out far too late and wearing unsuitable shoes, I’ve been gadding about trying to cram in a bit of live music, waging a one-woman war against self-scan tills (how can I possibly have an “unexpected item” when I got everything off the shelves in the shop?) and discovering that I don’t have enough money to make any money. On the music front, I was pleased to discover that Dan Reed was playing at the Forum in Kentish Town, supporting the Quireboys. Dan’s new material is impressive but he played some old favourites too. My enjoyment was slightly spoiled when a group of girls stood chattering loudly in the front row, drowning out Dan’s singing and irritating everyone within earshot, but I gave them one of my “looks” and they teetered off towards the bar. Dan had significantly less hair than I remember but despite this unfortunate turn of events we had a lovely chat afterwards and an impromptu photoshoot, the results of which I’m sure he’ll treasure. Lovely gravelly-voiced Spike Quireboy resembled a Romanian

gypsy escaping from a wedding – what used to be a wide headband is now a voluminous (perhaps baldpatch-covering?) headscarf with more fabric in it than my entire outfit. As usual he galloped around the stage like an impala on acid, making me feel quite exhausted just watching him. Another highlight was the debut

hopefully raised themselves a shedload of cash. The Devil Cocks are cocking it up again at Scream Lounge on 18th February. Check them out and see if they’ve stopped drinking long enough to rehearse some new songs!

“I’m waging a one-woman war against self-scan tills: How can I possibly have an ‘unexpected item’ when I got everything off the shelves in the shop?” show by the magnificently named Devil Cocks at the Roller Derby Christmas Fundraiser. I was impressed with their fortitude in the face of running-out-of-songs which they sorted out by playing other people’s songs at vastly accelerated speeds. The Roller Girls hosted a brilliant night, despite me not winning anything in the raffle, and

I’m still keeping a weather-eye on the lavatorial situation in and around town. However, I was disconcerted one Saturday night upon poking my head into the gents in the Ship to have my way blocked by the “freshen-up man”. He attempted to squirt me with his creamy liquid and tried to offer me a hand towel followed by a puff of

some nasty after-shave and appeared to think it reasonable for me to pay him for this assault. For fuck’s sake, it’s hardly big enough to swing a cat in there anyway, without some pointless person loitering around insinuating that we’re unable to operate a soap dispenser and a hand-dryer. Anyway, rant over. As I mentioned, finances are dire at present so Edith and I conducted a bit of a survey to find out what was really missing in people’s lives and whether we could make our fortune providing it. Top of the list from the men was a type of adult “pull-up” to avoid those night-time stumblings into wardrobes and broom cupboards when nature calls but you just can’t answer it coherently. We’re planning on calling them Piss Pants and have had requests for Darth Vader, Transformers and Spongebob Squarepants designs. The main stumbling block is that we would need to purchase a factory and some heavy duty machinery before we could go into production so it seems you’ll all have to get used to getting up and going in the proper place for the time being. Oh, and the ladies just wanted their hair never to have bad hair days and a wrinkle cream that works. Sorry ladies, that’s a bit too much to hope for. That’s it for another month folks. Keep it loud, keep it live and keep it up. See you at the bar. Auntie May returns next month...

Eccentric, charming, accommodating, surprising, seductive, warm, reliable, modest and unforgettable: it's a true friend.” Brian Eno. What’s On - Daily Guide: • Film: The Kings Speech (12A) Until 31st March - various dates & times check website for details. 2011 UK/ Australia 119 Mins Director: Tom Hooper. Stars: Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush, Tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George ('Bertie') reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stutter and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war. *Contains strong language in a speech therapy context 12 Oscar nominations including Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress Full Price £7.30 Concessions £4.80 David Lean Cinema, Croydon Clocktower, Katharine Street, Croydon. www.croydonclocktower.org.uk • Film: Black Swan (15) Until 31st March - various dates & times check website for details. 2010 US 108 Mins Director: Darren Aronofsky Stars: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey, Vincent Cassel, Winona Ryder A sophisticated psychological thriller set in the milieu of the New York Ballet. Natalie Portman is Nina who dreams of playing the lead in Swan Lake, and when the company prepares for a new production of the classic ballet, the artistic director (Vincent Cassel) needs someone who can combine the innocence of the White Swan with the eroticism and deception of the Black Swan. Nina is his first choice, but to succeed in the role she has to shed her inhibitions and reveal her darker, wilder side, and to convince him that she is a better choice than Lily (Mila Kunis), an impressive new dancer who oozes sexuality. Natalie Portman is outstanding as the driven but troubled Nina, and her increasingly fragile state of mind is imaginatively realised on screen. The demands and competition of professional ballet provides the perfect setting for the film's psychological themes, and the ballet performances are breathtakingly filmed. 10 Oscar nominations including Best Film and Best Actress Full Price £7.30 Concessions £4.80 David Lean Cinema, Croydon Clocktower, Katharine Street, Croydon. www.croydonclocktower.org.uk

• Theatre: Richard & Trudy Exit Theatre Group production Starring: Matt Lunnemann, Charlotte Red Cook, Gill Butler, Joe Webster, Lucy Hamilton, Graham Butler and Angel Martinez. Written and Directed by David Trotter Devon Hotelier, Richard, accidentally kills his mistress Sam after being caught in the act by wife Trudy. The couple decide they must dispose of the body to avoid jail when they are paid a visit from detectives on the search for a serial killer, who just so happens to be an occupying guest at their hotel. The couple hatch a plot to frame the killer for Sam’s death. However, the scheme doesn’t go according to plan and it’s not long before the body count starts to rise. "Richard & Trudy is a tightly riveted ride on a roller coaster that dips through humour, death, double crosses and sex. The journey is strewn with enough twists and turns to keep the audience guessing and enough witty dialogue and slapstick visuals to create a plethora of laugh out louds”. 'possessing unrestrained passion at its heart' (ExtraExtra.org) "Electric, seat gripping, eye flinching..." (Lennie Varvarides, Fringe Review) "A Classic reworking of an iconic novel" (Daisy Collins-Muswell, Hill Journal) Note: Depicts scenes of a sexual and violent nature Ages: 16+ 8pm.
