deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • www.facebook.com/deeplondon • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...and welcome to issue 96. Hey, how are you doing? Haven’t seen you since last year. You’re looking well. Hope you got everything you wanted for Christmas and you’ve kept whatever resolutions you made. We’re fine, thanks for asking, it’s good to be back, Happy New Year and all that, although we’re not sure when the cut-off date for saying that is..? Presumably it’s the first time you see someone in the new year, in which case - Happy New Year! This month we’re generally ignoring the ‘big’ event Valentine’s Day - because we know how annoying it is if you’re unattached, while those who are attached are invariably doing ‘other things’ and being unbearably smug about it. So yes, we’re not doing the love thing per se, but what we have done, because we love you, our readers and you, our contributors, is hand most of the mag over to the latter. (Don’t forget, budding writers, we do welcome contributions from you lovely lot, just e-mail us if you’ve got something up your sleeve. or down your trouser leg, or wherever...) Elsewhere, it seems it’s taking a while for everyone to get going again this year (not least us), what with everyone being skint and it being bleedin’ taters! outside, but looking ahead, blimey 2012 is a busy year, and we’re quite looking forward to it. General consensus seems to be it can’t be as bad as last year, so let’s hope. We’ve got some brilliant things lined up for future months, including our nascent hatched plan for the Olympics, along the lines of Croydopoly but on a massive scale. We’re currently ironing out some logistics and working out how to translate slalom canoeing into the equation, but we’re quite excited about it, and of course we’ll keep you posted. It’s going to be a good one, we reckon! Righto, I think that’s about it from me for this month - I’m slowly getting back into the groove of writing these things, but I’m not quite there yet, and thus can’t think of anything else that I need to impart to you, and I have the theme tune to Channel 5 kid’s programme ‘Hana’s Helpline’ stuck in my head (‘If you’re a bat who needs a chat, call moo, baa, double quack double quack’), so I’ll just say: we hope you enjoy this issue, enjoy the 6 Nations if you’re so inclined, have a lovely Valentine’s Day, whatever you’re doing, have a fantastic National Chip Week and we’ll see you next month. Avanti, allons-y, cheers! With love hearts on. Angela xxx Your Bonsai Editor - Still waiting... 1

he Olympics. They’re coming, whether we like it or not, but amidst the anticipation of traffic and travel chaos, security issues and a raft of increasingly po-faced adverts telling us we can all be ‘heroes’ (by eating a Snickers? Oh.. kay...) a chink of light exists, somewhat surprisingly being shown on the BBC, ‘the Olympic Broadcaster’ which shines a light on the kind of ineptitude that we all secretly, or maybe not so secretly, suspect is actually the case in the real Olympic delivery offices. Twenty Twelve, first shown back in March 2011 (currently being repeated on BBC4 Wednesdays and on i-player) is an award-winning mockumentary written by John Morton (People Like Us) which follows the Olympic Deliverance Team in the lead up to the Olympics and which stars a who’s who of British acting and comedy talent (and a few friends of the mag). The main ensemble of six includes Hugh Bonneville, Jessica Hynes Amelia Bulmore, Olivia Colman and Vincent Franklin, with a raft of guest appearances including Nina Sosanya, Tim McInnery, Nitin Ganatra (Masood from Eastenders) Darren Boyd and even Sebastian Coe, as himself, all narrated by David Tennant. From issues with stag beetles, piles of dung from disgruntled anti Greenwich Park equestrian protesters, boring sportsmen, traffic-light phasing, wind turbines with no wind, roman remains in the diving pool and other cock-ups, the first series was brilliant, as far as we’re concerned. A slow burner, maybe, it doesn’t have the savagery of ‘The Thick of It’, but it doesn’t have to. As the Observer TV critic noted; “Every episode here is a subtle gem, getting way too close for comfort on the excruciations of political correctness, our modern failure to organise a cup of tea without a flowchart and the impossibility of getting athletes to say anything interesting, ever.” The joy is that the Olympics haven’t happened yet, no-one really knows what’s going on behind the scenes or indeed if they know what the hell they’re doing and there’s quite a sweet sub-plot involving Ian Fletcher, head of deliverance (Bonneville) and his secretary who’s clearly in love with him. The performances are excellent, the writing is sharp and although it seems relatively
gentle, it also seems entirely plausible that the actual Olympic team are running about as clueless as the characters. As Vincent Franklin, who plays Nick ‘I cannot allow it’ Jowett - head of contracts, puts it; “I don’t parallel whoever it is who has the miserable job of looking after contracts on the Olympics. I think what we do reflect is that sense of people who’ve not done this before, who’ve done similar things, but this is kind of bigger than anything they’ve ever done, so it’s like, you know, you’ve run a really good dinner party and people say ‘that’’s brilliant you’ve done that, now we’re going to get you to go and run the restaurant at The Savoy’ and you’re not necessarily up to it.“ All the actors seem to have a genuine affection for their characters, and to have had a rare old time making the series. Hugh Bonneville says of his character; “He’s a classic example of a manager who’s trying to do his best to appear calm while paddling like hell. Even though it looks very improvised and rather, sort of, messy, every dot dot dot and dash is marked in, and every repeated word is scripted, so it has this faux naturalism which I absolutely love. “None of the characters are fools but they are eccentric in their own way, and I think it’s the dynamic of the six main characters and the way they interact that leads to a lot of the comedy. “We’ve only taken four and a half weeks to shoot it, but we’ve all slipped into character all too easily, and we’ve had an awful lot of fun making it. Just trying to keep a straight face is the hardest thing when you’ve got very very good comic actors on either side of you.” Friend of the mag Jessica Hynes gives a cringingly realistic portrayal of a bullshitting PR / ‘creative’ type (‘Head of Brand’ Siobhan Sharpe): “She’s quite powerful, she’s got her own business, she’s one of those people who likes to always be one step ahead, 4
so she kind of pretends she knows what you’re talking about even when she doesn’t, and that’s generally what she does. It’s all scripted, there’s not much improvisation, and what we’ve found is that some of the scenes, because they’re very very tightly woven, in terms of dialogue, is that they can be tricky to nail. There’s lots of very naturalistic, written language, so as a team we’ve found we’ve had to work very closely, very supportively with each other to get the scenes right. That, I think, gave us a real sense of camaraderie on set. I hope I’m right in saying that was the case - I certainly felt it. I mean they could all be saying ‘oh, nightmare, she’s a nightmare’ but I certainly felt we got on really really well and we’re very much a good team!” In the second series - due to be broadcast in February/March 2012 - the pressure mounts as the Olympic Deliverance team try to navigate their way through such delicate issues as how to handle the Algerian team's demand for a mosque in the Olympic village, how to carry out a Legacy Audit on the rival bids for the Stadium when no one knows what a Legacy Audit is, and budgetary concerns such as how to deliver value for money when there isn't any money. Ian Fletcher reacted to the news thusly; “Obviously I think damage has already been done to the smoothrunning of our department by allowing the BBC cameras in. Personally, I don't want it to continue. But upstairs says it's going to. So that's all good...” Twenty Twelve Series Two - Feb/Mar 2012 on BBC4. Series One out now on BBC DVD. DarkZac returns with some festive fetish. . . British burlesque into their veins. In short, she will rock your socks off! This year’s Christmas burlesque was packed to the rafters - filled with expectation the audience gathered, unaware of the festive feast to come. Glistening with rouge & tweed, that cam-fur smell popping the air, (always reminding me of a 50’s noir) and with fresh cupcakes and candle-lit tables the scene was set. One gentleman stood out with his Crombie Panama hat and spats, looking the part, a reference to the past that is never wasted. As well as Mr Meredith and Ms Em, the bill featured October Rush, Miss Bruised Violet, Electra, Gin Atomic, Dark Teaser, Dave The Were-Bear with DJ Makkam playing Rock n Roll & Tony X playing classic rock. Miss Brusie wowed the audience with her swirling hypnotic twists and poses, always displaying the most wonderful outfits, Dave the Were-Bear captivated us all when he sang, so beautiful, we collectively sighed and swooned. The acts just kept coming woven together by the divine Ms Em, who twice that evening enlisted an eager young gentleman from the audience to help her entertain. To extract joy and laughter in such a way from an audience is truly a gift; the Tease Room is a diamond, a taste of Croydon nightlife to enjoy.

es that’s right for four years now the Black Sheep Bar has been running a burlesque extravaganza named the tease rooms, and December saw its festive incarnation. Organised by Sharon Turner, these nights are a mix of old time burlesque, music hall charm and a punch of modern pizzazz. The Tease Rooms bring South Croydon alive with regular performances from some of the best names in the business along with heaps of special guests coming together to provide a night you will remember. Always a favourite for me after covering this event for the last two years is the wonderful Mr Meredith with his own style of witty sass. A real show stealer, he whips up the crowd into a tangle of expectation of what’s to come, with a rollercoaster ride of puns and contemporary takes on modern themes, he always brings the house down, and to see an artist of his calibre in a small club in Croydon for peanuts is amazing. Then there is the divine Ms Em who fills your boil with suga’ every time (I have no idea what that means - Ed), oozing sexy charm and regularly engaging with the audience Ms Em is that kinda naughty woman who tickles you just in the right spot then... Eats you ALIVE!! When Ms Em sings she holds the audience in her hand, stroking them softly then injects a saucy blend of

A new semi-regular strand in which we ask local culinary luminaries to provide recipes for you to cook at home. This month, chef and coowner Grant at The Glamorgan’s delicious pork belly recipe. . .
R
egular readers will no doubt be aware that we sometimes fling a few recipes into the Deep mix, usually tying in with events that month, and this month is no different. Except it is. The Deep Towers massive can cook, don’t get me wrong, but we thought that, given there are so many excellent chefs in town, it’d be an interesting idea to ask a few of them to give you lovely readers some of their favourite recipes. And then we thought, why not tell you the best place to buy the main, if not all of, the ingredients, thusly highlighting the pointlessness of going to any of the twenty million or so supermarkets that are popping up in every empty building in town and the economic value of going down the market. Because, as you know, we’re great advocates of the place and believe sincerely that it’s one of Croydon’s best (and definitely one of its most unique) features which, If we don’t use it, we risk losing it, I’m afraid... But enough doom and gloom. Now you’ve got the idea, to coincide with Bramley Apple Week (and with Mother’s Day just around the corner) this month, here’s Grant’s recipe, ideal for a fantastic Sunday lunch with friends and family. Enjoy! Roasted Pork Belly in Cider You will need: • 1 x Whole Pork Belly (2kg) • 1 1/2 pints of Cider (preferably sweet - e.g. Bulmers) • Whole Cloves ª Salt and Pepper Method: 1) Rub the pork belly skin with salt, leave to stand for 30 minutes (this reduces the amount of water in the pork) 2) Wipe the salt off 3) Score the skin in diamond shapes (i.e score parallel lines going one way, then the other way) 4) Stick cloves into the skin at regular intervals. 8
5) Put the pork belly into a deep roasting dish. Pour the cider on and around. Cover with foil. 6) Cook at 170ºC / 340ºF / Gas 3.5 for around 3 and a half hours. 7) Remove pork from the cider and place on a draining / drip tray. 8) Remove all bones while hot (turn the belly over and pull out the bones, they should come out quite easily) 9) Let the pork belly cool, and cut into portion sized pieces. 10) To serve, re-heat the pork belly in the oven for 10 minutes, then place under the grill to crisp up the skin. 11) Serve with roast or steamed vegetables of your choice and a Bramley Apple Chutney or sweet chutney. Pork Belly Price Comparison: (all prices correct at time of going to print) Sainsburys: £6.49 per kilo Tesco: £5.49 per kilo Waitrose: £5.29 per kilo Asda: £4.50 per kilo Terry’s (ex Murray’s) Meat Market, Surrey Street: £4.49 for one kilo - less per kilo for 2 kilos
So there you have it, market is best, and if you factor in freshness and absence of packaging, it’s a bit of a nobrainer really, isn’t it? Hopefully you lovely readers will appreciate what we’re trying to do with this strand, we’re not having a go, just pointing things out. Huge thanks to Grant for giving us his recipe. If you haven’t been yet, visit the Glamorgan (Cherry Orchard Road, East Croydon) for all fresh quality food, South African cuisine and a general all round nice atmos. In fact, some of the best food in town, in our opinion. See you at the bar!

ello and welcome back my lovelies. Hopefully you’re all rejuvenated after your Christmas break and glowing with pride that you’ve managed to keep your New Year Resolutions for over a month. I know I am. Mind you, I make a point of cleverly deciding on resolutions which are fairly easy to keep: eat tartare sauce with everything, refuse to listen to hip-hop or gangsta rap and remember that wearing sensible shoes does not make you a lesbian. I’ve been out and about in London a lot recently, propping up (or being propped up by) the barrier and adding to my not inconsiderable collection of tour t-shirts. I saw the rather fabulous Voodoo Six at the Borderline – it was their bass player Tony’s birthday (did this
the Forum. The last time I tried to see them I ended up right at the back, following an unfortunate incident with a Vauxhall Astra and a man from the Territorial Army, so I wisely went under my own steam this time and got right down the front. My distant view of Mr. Coverdale last time had not prepared me for such a close-up inspection and I have to say his resemblance to a pantomime dame was a little unnerving. This illusion was compounded when a confused looking Father Christmas bumbled onto the stage at one point and chucked some gifts out to the crowd (sadly I was not a lucky recipient). Whitesnake over the years have not changed their modus operandi at all. The show was regularly punctuated with tedious solos including a drum solo which went on Forevermore
“Close-up, David Coverdale’s resemblance to a pantomime dame was a little unnerving. . .” explain the glittery things all over the floor?) and it seemed churlish not to spend it with him. The Borderline is a great venue, except for the fact that coming down the stairs takes you right to the front of the stage so it’s majorly crowded down the front! Still, I stuck it out and it was well worth it, not so much for the close up views of balding middle aged men practically ejaculating over Matt’s guitar solos, but for the experience of almost being on stage with the band - and consequently losing my hearing in one ear for a week. Once my hearing had returned, I was off to see the legendary Whitesnake at
David Coverdale holds his own...
(excuse the wordplay), while we watched their drummer prove he could indeed play the drums (he is a drummer after all) not only with drumsticks, but with kitchen knives, chopsticks and, well, his hands. The guitar solos were definitely more entertaining (particularly Reb Beach (ex-Winger)’s sex-face posing) but the crowd clearly wanted them to get down to playing some of their old stuff rather than prat about proving that they could play their instruments. When they did eventually get round to playing a song or two, they kept stopping in the middle so David could have a little chat with the crowd
Sammy Hagar 10
but eventually we got the whole of Still of the Night which made it all worthwhile for me at any rate. And then there was Chickenfoot. Now I know it’s only February but fuck me, that had to be gig of the year (although there’s Rammstein coming up…). Despite that fact that the boiler in the Brixton Academy had clearly packed up and didn’t there used to be stars on the ceiling when you looked up? the gig just couldn’t have been better. Sammy Hagar’s voice was amazing - particularly the echoing scream at the end of Down the Drain, and Joe Satriani proved what a guitar-god he is. There was no messing about, they just pumped out blinding, quality rock for two hours and left everybody wanting more. All this hob-nobbing with ageing rockstars (not including Voodoo Six in this generalisation obviously) has prompted the question of how so many of these rock dinosaurs have managed not to go bald. Here’s s list I compiled in about 10 minutes – there’s probably loads more: Sammy Hagar, Biff Byford (Saxon), David Coverdale, Jon Bon Jovi, Ozzy, Tom Araya (Slayer), Dave Mustaine (and the rest of Megadeth actually), Kirk Hammet, Lemmy, all of Iron Maiden, Geddy Lee, Tony Iommi, Tom Keifer (Cinderella), Alice Cooper, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Brian May, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Vinny Appice, Eddie Van Halen, Glenn Hughes, Joe Elliott, the beautiful Nikki Sixx (and the rest of the Crüe), Axl, Slash and Duff, Brett Michaels, Gene Simmons, and look at Dr. Brian Cox, he was in a couple of bands. Even though about 50% of men suffer significant male-pattern baldness by the age of 50 (and all of this lot are around 50 or older), somehow they seem to have kept their hair – unless they’ve all had hair implants or wear syrups. And they say a life of drugs and alcohol is bad for you. Ah well, just another of life’s mysteries I suppose. See you next month - in the meantime, stay warm, upright & happy.

In honour of World Cancer Day and in anticipation of next month’s ‘Robstock’ event in aid of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, our occasional series shining a light on Croydon’s heroes pays tribute to Professor Humphrey Edward Melville Kay, polymath and pioneer in the treatment of leukaemia
W
hen Professor Kay entered the field of oncology in the 1950s there was no effective treatment for any form of leukaemia, but thanks to the work he pioneered and steered, by the mid-1980s most children with leukaemia, and a growing number of young adults, were being cured. During his time at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, his approach to his work was a combination of the practical and the intellectual. In 1963 he and his colleagues set about planning and building a ground-breaking new ward for the protective isolation of immune-suppressed patients with
Kay as the administrator. So successful was this ward that they designed and built another, larger, one named the Bud Flanagan ward. It was equipped for the intensive treatment of acute leukaemia and designed to facilitate bone-marrow transplants. The ward was opened in 1973 and the first successful UK bone-marrow transplant was then performed. While the wards were being set up, Kay was appointed as Secretary to the leukaemia trials of the Medical Research Council. Using his diplomatic flair, his extraordinary presentation skills and his charm, he managed to bring together

12
leukaemia specialists from Britain, France and the United States so they could collaborate in the research and treatment of this relatively rare disease. His efforts led to the establishment of the first international protocols on the treatment of leukaemia. Kay recognised the importance of understanding the biology of leukaemia, actively encouraging and taking part in pioneering research into the immunological and chromosomal characteristics of leukaemia cells. These characteristics now play a crucial role in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Humphrey Edward Melville Kay was born in Croydon, Surrey in 1923. At three months old his mother, a missionary doctor, took him back to the family home in India, where his father was an Anglican minister. At their homecoming to Lahore his elder sister Fran, who was four at the time, recalled a brass band playing in honour of the arrival of her baby brother – a son to the Memsahib who, up until then, had only two daughters. He remained in India for the first four years of his life until the family returned to Britain. Back in England, he attended the Downs prep school in Colwall, Worcestershire, where he was taught English by W.H. Auden. During his time there, the poet composed many songs for the school concerts – some of which, in retrospect, Kay and his contemporaries realised, had contained some amusing, if inappropriate, double-entendres. An old boy of Bryanston, he recalled that in 1941 he and his good friend Michael Flindt had cycled from their school in Dorset to Southampton to take their

preliminary medical exams. The night before this exam, one of the heaviest wartime air raids hit the city. As the bombs fell, the students hid in a downstairs room and, even though a nearby ceiling collapsed, they were unscathed. With neither gas nor electricity, they worked out that their practical exams the following day would be limited; both he and Flindt passed. Kay's medical career began at St Thomas's hospital in London, where he qualified in 1945. By 1947 he had joined the RAF and was transferred to Aden. He recalls that it was "a happy, peaceful place, where one learned to avoid amoebic dysentery; to play tennis through the hot season; to ride a camel; and to admire the starry skies with a limited range of classical music on 78s with a wind-up player." After returning to Britain, Dr Kay worked for six years in different branches of pathology (indeed 16 years later, he became the editor of the Journal of Clinical Pathology), and then in 1956 he embarked on his career at the Royal Marsden Hospital as a consultant clinical
pathologist. The vacancy at the Marsden, a destination he had never contemplated, coincided with his daughter going to school almost next door, so this made up his mind. He thought he might stay for a year or two but ended up dedicating 28 years of his life to the hospital, retiring as Professor of Haematology in 1984. On retirement from medicine, he effectively began a second career as a naturalist, drawing on his childhood love of wildlife and the environment. He was soon nationally renowned in this field, too. His colleagues recall that, even though he came to it late, he was a born naturalist with a sharp intellect, enquiring mind and keen eye and a committed enthusiasm for wildlife. He was a member of the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and was elected to its Council in 1983. One of the Trust's most valuable fund-raising activities arose from his idea of a sponsored walk each May Day bank holiday from Avebury to Stonehenge He was a familiar figure in Wiltshire in his floppy hats, or for more formal occasions a flamboyant
13
bow tie. His speciality was entomology, but he took an interest in most conservation issues, and contributed to the badger and bovine TB issues through articles, correspondence and national debate – his views not always welcomed by government or by other conservationists. In 1996 he was awarded the Christopher Cadbury Medal by the national body of the Wildlife Trusts for his contribution to conservation. Kay was a true polymath, as comfortable with the arts as he was with science, and passionate about opera, ballet and music. He was also an accomplished musician and poet. He published a volume of humorous and reflective verse, Poems Polymorphic. One of these, "The Haematologist's Song", had a refrain of "Blood, blood, glorious blood..." set to The Hippopotamus tune of Flanders and Swann. He would sing it with great aplomb to delegates at national and international haematology meetings. Professor Kay died in Marlborough, Wiltshire on the 20th October 2009 aged 86.

t’s been a while since we brought you a news round-up, but there’s been quite a lot going on since we’ve been away on our Xmas break, and we start with the opening of a new night-spot. Bad Apple opened in early February on the site of the old Pop World club, opposite the Odd Shoe, and all the picture on this page is from the opening night. As you can see it’s pretty plush inside (the three lovely ladies are the burlesque dancers who were circulating on opening night). Owned by the same people who own the Black Sheep Bar, the remit is as a sort of ‘older Sheep’, catering for those of us who feel like we should be issued with a pension book and zimmer frame as soon as we enter the Sheep proper. According to the website (www.badapple.co) “Bad Apple is a whole new pub experience for the discerning drinker. A late night pub where you can step onto the dance floor to listen to great music from credible DJs and boogie on until the early hours “We shall be keeping at our CORE the belief in quality service from friendly attentive staff in a venue decadently designed with a pub like feel. Bringing something fresh to the heart of Croydon while keeping you in safe hands.” The DJs in question include the wonderful Soap Co, ex Manumission regular Schminky and old favourite Linton. It’s of course difficult to tell from one night, and as Paul explained, it’s about 80% there, with a few more bits
and pieces to come, but it looks lovely, they sell Macallan whisky behind the bar (along with a host of other drinks, but Macallan is our favourite, so there) the prices seem reasonable and we can see it becoming a welcome addition to the Croydon pub pantheon. A full review will follow in a couple of months when they’ve had time to bed in. Elsewhere in Croydon, a chance pop in to The Windmill in St James’ Road reveals that the pub has been taken over by a delightful Indian couple who are well underway in providing authentic Indian cuisine alongside the usual pubgrub in the pub. We’ve tried the food and by God it’s good! For the purists egg and chips and Sunday Roasts are still available, but we’d recommend giving the Indian food a go (It is quite spicy!). As an added bonus, for us at least, the Windmill also still shows the horse racing every day too. Full review next month... Rumours abound at present (mainly thanks to the Croydon Scaremonger, I mean Advertiser) that the empty Swan and Sugarloaf is to be turned into a Tesco Express, which is just the worst idea ever. The insidious taking over of Croydon by various supermarkets is, to be fair, really pissing us off (hence the recipe page price comparison - don’t be bloody sheep people, just because there’s ANOTHER Tesco in front of you it doesn’t mean you have to go in there, there’s a bleedin’ fresh food market round the corner!). The clerk of The
14
Whitgift Foundation, who own the site has stated “Tesco is one of the interested parties but there are other people interested and it is nowhere near a done deal”, and a local application to get the building nationally listed may kaibosh any immediate plans, but please, Whitgift (and indeed the Council, who seem to do little else) stop chasing the almighty dollar and think, will you? For balance, views have been expressed that it’s better to have something there rather than an empty building, but in our experience, a pub that’s changed into something else NEVER becomes a pub again. We reckon a nice pub/restaurant catering to the grey pound that surrounds the building in the various nursing homes and sheltered accommodation would make a mint, but what do we know, we’ve only been under the skin of this town for the last 8 years... Anyway, there’s a facebook group been set up - search “Stop Tesco taking over the Swan and Sugar Loaf!!” although it doesn’t actually offer any alternative plans. Still, it is only new. At present there are no planning applications regarding the building, but we’ll keep our eye on that one. Bit of a downer to end on, but that’s the news, please return to whatever you were doing... More news next month, possibly...

A new series from Steph Darkes proving Deep is indeed down with kids & technology and stuff...

elcome to the first installment of my brand new monthly Twitter update where I highlight some of the trends, great tweets and faux pas by the movers and shakers in Twitter world. I report on what’s happening with the Croydon Twitterati & give you some tips to help you get to grips with Twitter. Things that caught my eye on Twitter in January: Gary Glitter appeared on Twitter. You would be forgiven for thinking that Gary Glitter would stay well away from the internet so when his ‘official account’ (Twitter.com/OfficialGlitter) popped up, the Tweetsphere was shaken. Critics claimed from the start
senses, it's time to confirm that yes, this is a fake account. I'm not Wendi," (@Wendi_Murdoch) Twunce of the month goes to: Labour MP Diane Abbott who got herself in trouble and was ordered by Ed Milliband to apologise after making allegedly racist remarks during a conversation on Twitter about Stephen Lawrence's murderers. Ms Abbott tweeted "White people love playing 'divide & rule'. We should not play their game." This resulted in a furore; Diane Abbot issued this statement in the aftermath: "I understand people have interpreted my comments as making generalisations about white people. I do not believe in doing that. I apologise for any offence
@CroydonTours claim Croydon is “Britain’s most interesting town” and who are we to argue. . ? that it must be a fake and the account was never verified, but people still appeared to take it very seriously, issuing death threats and hurling abuse. Later a man known only as Ben admitted that he had set up the account; "I set this twitter account up as a social experiment to highlight the dangers and safety of children using the social networking sites and to discover and question public morality. It's been an interesting and eyeopening experience for me." Glitter wasn’t the only person to be impersonated, the real Rupert Murdoch set up a Twitter account on New Year’s Eve and Twitterati chucked abuse at him (a bit like Axl Rose’s audience hurling bottles at him in Dublin on the Guns n Roses comeback tour in 2010). This prompted his alleged ‘Missus’ Wendy Deng to create an account to defend her husband. Twitter mistakenly verified this account as real, but it wasn’t long before the person behind it came clean, again remaining anonymous s/he tweeted this; "Hello Twitter. As News International has finally come to their
caused."She claimed she was taken out of context, but whether she was or not, it’s a pretty stupid thing to tweet! *remember kids: EVERYBODY can see what you are tweeting! New for #Croydon: There are a lot of people singing the praises of Croydon on Twitter but the Tweeter that has caught my attention this month is @CroydonTours. When the tours were announced on Twitter there were lots of positive responses and not-sopositive responses like this one: ‘@anna247 Why would ANYONE willing want to go to Croydon?!!’ Apart from Anna missing the ‘ly’ from willingly, with all the bad press Croydon puts up with I’m sure she wouldn’t be the only person with that opinion. But Croydon Tours claim Croydon is “Britain’s most interesting town” and that the tours are “exploring its long, rich and often forgotten history.” We know that Croydon is great and the guys behind the tours are dedicated to getting that message across. I’ll be taking the ghost tour and I’ll be sure to tell you 16
all about it. To find out more or book a tour check out www.croydontours.co. Another one to look out for is @badapplecroydon a new venue opening in February. The next Croydon tweet-up is taking place there on 9th Feb, follow them for more info. Hot twitter tips: For newbies: If you’re not on Twitter yet, you really should be follow these easy steps to start the conversation... Choose a handle (@stephaniedarkes) Write your bio give people a reason to follow you, be engaging and tell them something about yourself Select a great photoprobably not a naked one because you won’t last too long! For the more experienced Tweeter here’s a tool twip: Check out TheTwitCleaner. It’s a great tool for cleaning up your Twitstream and getting rid of spammers and bots! I love this app, it highlights users who might be using Twitter inappropriately, telling you who’s spamming, whose behaviour is ‘dodgy’, who are Bots and who are self-obsessed… It also tells you where you fit into the mix! Try it out for yourself at www.thetwitcleaner.com. And that’s all folks! If you have any questions about Twitter or you want some tips, follow me @stephaniedarkes www.stephaniedarkes.co.uk Steph returns next month...

Happy New Year/Valentine’s Day etc! Well, this year looks to be a good one for cinema with some much anticipated releases finally coming to the big screen. But before we get carried away, let’s fill you in with what’s been going on. Dream House A unique take on the traditional haunted house story. You really have to keep your eye on this one because there are several mysteries to solve, and just when you think the story is going one way, it splits in different directions. Will Atenton (Daniel Craig) moves with his wife (Rachel Weisz) and daughters into their new home. Upon discovering it was once a grisly murder scene, he investigates. What he discovers is ghosts and conspiracy the likes of which will challenge his grasp on sanity. Both Craig and Weisz are great in their roles and the relationship they portray. Without spoiling the film I’m just going to say, there are twists. A few actually. That’s what keeps it interesting. Is Will crazy? Does he genuinely have a friendly relationship with ghosts? Exactly who killed whom?! Perhaps the only real flaw is that there are too many twists - it tries too hard to keep you guessing and escape generic formats, with some of the revelations being frankly pointless. But to be perfectly honest, there is only so much you can do with a haunted house story, and this film tries (if somewhat stumbles) to do something different.
New Year’s Eve I wanted to enjoy this film, really I did! Mean Girls, Notting Hill, I love a good chick-flick but this American Love Actually follow-up to Valentine’s Day is just mind-boggling. Basically, several characters find that they have individual challenges to overcome before midnight that funnily enough all intermingle. New Years Eve’s creators should have focused on quality over quantity when putting together its various stories - there are way too many packed into this parade of do-gooders, of which a great many of the nonsensical ones could easily have been culled to give extra screen time to the more worthy ones. The rivalry between the two couples racing to have their babies born first for example is genuinely funny and could have been a film all of its own, while other plots don’t really lead anywhere or just pop up out of the blue. The odd coupling of a perky Zac Efron and a seemingly suicidal Michelle Pfeiffer being a point in case of being simply baffling. New Year’s Eve has a few good laughs and heart-warming moments, but fact is its way too chirpy for its own good - warm fuzzy sentimental pap that leaves a sickly sweet taste in your mouth.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows In the last couple of years it seems the world has gone Sherlock Holmes mad. There’s no denying it, the Victorian gent has made a come-back. Now personally I preferred the London-based mystery of the first film, it seemed more fitting of a private investigator, whereas this film has Holmes as practically a superhero saving the world, with his powers of deduction crankedup to the status of ‘spidey-senses’ and an excessive use of ‘look how awesome he is!’ slow-motion. But this is a sequel, and ticks all the boxes of what a sequel should be: bigger, more exciting and more dangerous. Holmes and Watson find themselves in their biggest case yet against Holmes’ most feared adversary and arch-nemesis, the criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty. If they are not successful the fabrics of western civilisation will be torn apart in bloodshed. A Game of Shadows has enough elaborate thrills and action to keep you entertained and a plot worthy of a Sherlock / Moriarty showdown. The character of Moriarty, portrayed as a misleadingly calm sociopath, is excellently captured by Jarred Harris. Furthermore Jude Law truly steps out of Robert Downey Jr’s shadow for this film, emotionally developing Watson’s character beyond being merely Holmes’ sidekick.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Here we are again with another impossible mission. Early in this film a message for Ethan Hunt ( Tom Cruise) doesn’t self-destruct , and requires a good whack in order to work . Is this an omen of things to come? Well, no, because despite the fact the IMF team are in their worst position yet , things run smoothly. Perhaps too smoothly. Problem is, they’re just too good for their own good, making the film lack any real tension. After being framed for a terrorist attack Ethan Hunt and his team are on the run. To clear their names and with no government support , they must thwart a mad scientists attempt to instigate nuclear war. Tension or no tension, this film is a lot of fun, but there is some dodgy casting - Paula Patton as the predictably seductive agent on Hunt’s team is simply bland and boring whilst Jeremy Renner as the ‘been pushing to many pencils but actually a tough guy’ bureaucrat is irritating. Having said that , the decision to give Simon Pegg more screen time adds some much needed comic relief to balance Cruise’s sternness. Furthermore the use of geographical locations (Moscow, Dubai, Mumbai) is phenomenal, offering stunning scenery and landscapes.

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens in the first major UK exhibition for over 40 years. Recreating the atmosphere of Victorian London through sound and projections, you'll be taken on a haunting journey to discover the city that inspired his writings. Paintings, photographs, costume and objects will illustrate themes that Dickens wove into his works, while rarely seen manuscripts including Bleak House and David Copperfield – written in the author’s own hand – will offer clues to his creative genius. During your visit you'll discover how Dickens' childhood experiences of London, working in a blacking factory whilehis father was locked away in a debtor's prison, were introduced into the stories he wrote. The great social questions of the 19th century, including wealth and poverty, prostitution, childhood mortality and philanthropy, will also be examined, all of which set the scene for Dickens' greatest works. Highlights of the exhibition will include an
innovative audio-visual experience bringing to life the desk and chair where Dickens worked on his novels, and a specially commissioned film by one of the UK’s leading documentary filmmakers, William Raban, which will explore the similarities between London after dark today and the night time city described by Dickens over 150 years ago. Traditionally eaten for breakfast it’s part of the traditional Lenten preparations. In addition to providing a little meat, the collops were also the source of the fat for the following day's pancakes. The word collop, here, is taken to mean a small piece of bacon. In general it is used to refer to a small piece of meat. In Cornwall, it is called Nickanan Night or Peasen Monday (pea soup is served instead of meat). So basically, what we’re saying is, have a fry up for breakfast...
