deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • facebook deep-london • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...welcome to issue 79 and, phew, what a scorcher it’s been. Fantastic stuff. We’re doing our bit at this end to keep it sunny by continuing our beer garden detective strand, part three of which you’ll find in this issue’s centre pages. Because it’s been so very hot and sticky, this month we’ve ventured to higher ground where the breeze still blows, or Crystal Palace, as it’s sometimes known. We’ve even ventured over that odd border that runs through the place and found ourselves in, gasp, Lambeth. You’ll be pleased to hear we returned unscathed and also mildly more drunk. Elsewhere we hope you all enjoyed the World Cup, apart from the obvious, and thanks to all who complimented us on our cup special issue, and our handy wall chart. At time of writing I don’t know who’s won, but if Spain’s good enough for Paul the psychic octopus it’s good enough for us, so Go Spain! I wonder if Paul’s amazing talents will be put to good use after the world cup. Lottery numbers maybe? Or, if Spain lose, a big old helping of calamari. In other news, time for some admin, which I know you all enjoy some changes have occurred this month at Deep Towers and they are thusly: From now on, and for the foreseeable future, Deep London Magazine will come out around the 10th of each month with listings running from then through to at least the 10th of the following month. There are a few reasons for this which include the propensity of bank holidays to fall smack bang when we want to go to print, thus throwing everything out of kilter, the fact that a significant proportion of venues struggle get their listings to us before they hit the actual month they’re in and, mainly, because I am having a very well earned break at the end of August. Don’t fear though, you’ll never miss an event if you join the deep-london facebook fan page or follow us on twitter as we’re posting up daily events there. Of course, all of this is still experimental, so we’ll see how it goes and keep you posted if anything changes. Other changes to the mag starting from this month involve the listings, in that we’ve added a new section for things that happen regularly each month, for example on the 2nd Saturday of the month. This is to free up more space for the vast amount of stuff we have to try to fit in each month. Hopefully, it’ll make it easier for you to find regular events. As always, you’re welcome to send us your thoughts on these things via the e-mail, or on facebook or twitter etc. Right, I think that’s about it for this month, we hope you enjoy our Summer Festival sort-of-special, including our interview with Croydon legend Captain Sensible who is, it turns out, A Top Bloke. Have a great month and no doubt see you all at the festi. Pip-pip, avanti and allons-y! Angela xxx

It’s nearly time for the annual Croydon Summer Festival, and this year we think they’ve played a bit of a blinder in getting Croydon’s finest, The Damned, to play - in honour of which, we’ve only gone and got an exclusive interview with Captain Sensible. Oh yes, don’t say we never give you anything...

T

o say The Damned have a fractured history would, I think, be understating it. If you don’t know all the ins and outs a quick glance at the history section of their website (www.thedamned.com) should fill you in on the numerous lineup changes, hiatuses and shenanigans that have gone on - and their numerous groundbreaking achievements - since they were first formed by guitariest/singer Captain Sensible and drummer Rat Scabies after meeting in the salubrious surrounds of the arse-end of the The Fairfield Halls, sunny Croydon, in 1974. But what it won’t tell you is the seminal role The Damned have played in the musical lives of not only me, but most of the people I know, which is why, when we heard they were playing this year’s Croydon Festival, we all got

a bit over-excited. Some 34 years on, the band ‘coming home’ is a Big Deal and although in the rather more sedate surrounds of Lloyd Park I don’t expect to be lifted off my feet and deposited several feet to the left minus my shoes in a moshpit, as happened when they played Brixton Academy many moons ago, there remains a veritable frisson around people of a certain age (and my mum, who loves Dave Vanian) about the prospect of seeing one of the best punk/goth/psych/call ‘em what you want bands ever. So, with that in mind, we really couldn’t miss the opportunity to have a pleasant chat (and ask some readers questions), on the eve of his visit to Caterham to see a gig, with the iconic loon Captain Sensible about all things musical, Damned Crystal Palace FC and, of course, Croydon... How are you? “Not so bad considering that for the last 30 years or so I've led a bit of a rock 'n roll lifestyle. A bit deaf as you'd expect but otherwise not too bad.” What gig are you going to in Caterham? “Some members of the Johnny Moped band (Croydon's

finest).... having a jam in a pub in Caterham. As you do.” What have you been up to for the last few years? “My idea of success has nothing to do with money... or fame... or glamour.... or anything like that - as long as I don't have to be cleaning bogs for a living again I'm happy. Not that there's anything wrong with that particular job (in fact I was quite good at it when I worked for Croydon Council) - it's the getting up at 7am that I couldn't handle. “I'm a night person, there's a bit of Dracula in me. Appropriate then that I joined the Damned, eh? How are the rest of the Damned? Any rehearsing, other gigs planned? “It's festival season in the summer.... So it's one off fly ins in Europe and the like. You meet some of your old chums backstage at these do’s occasionally though, which is nice. Lemmy dragged me into his trailer the other day... "listen to THIS captain". It was his new album and he proceeded to chainsmoke while I gave it the once over. The great thing about Lem is he's still so enthusiastic about it all. Like a teenager still. “As for the Damned we're plotting something special for our 35th anniversary next year which will celebrate the amazing explosion of UK punk and the class of '77 and all that.” How do you feel about playing Croydon after such a long time? “Although we've played the likes of San Francisco, Nuremberg and 4

Bilbao recently, doing a gig in Croydon will be pretty special for us - that's why I insisted we do the Lloyds Park bash. I can remember fly postering in Thornton Heath and Broad Green for our first shows, and coming second to last in a talent contest at the Brigstock Arms, and the stacks of rejection letters we got from record companies so it WAS a bit of a struggle when we started. I used to see bands playing local clubs - Mott The Hoople and The Groundhogs who used to come back every year, and I thought - will audiences ever dig US in that way? “So after all that we've done since then coming back is pretty special as I guess we DID make it after all.” We’ve been running a strand called 'Lost Croydon Boozers' where we document pubs and clubs that have closed down. like The Forum, Horn and Trumpet, The Croydon and others, and we’re planning to do the Greyhound.

What are your memories of playing there? “My over-riding memories of the Greyhound are not of playing there but of going there as a teenager to watch all those marvelous bands they used to book. Quintessence, Soft Machine, The Pink Fairies... and Status Quo, who used to forego the comfort of their

paying me that much so I have to admit I was one of those scoundrels who clambered over St George's Walk to come in through the fire escape windows, straight into the darkened venue, often while the band was playing onstage. You couldn't see where you were going to land when you stumbled through so I recall sometimes

“Did I tell you I once helped George Melly into his taxi outside the Gun? He had a bottle of scotch in each pocket.” backstage dressing room to sit in the bar with their fans. Gratefully accepting drinks of course but I admired them for that as the whole 'arrogant rock star' thing with flashy limos and burly minders was getting out of control in the 70s. And in some way helped create punk rock which had (allegedly) 'No Heroes'. “My first couple of jobs weren't

dropping into peoples laps - which wasn't so clever really as someone shrieking during a quiet Pentangle tune kinda gives the game away somewhat. “When punk came along the gigs there were a little more lively though, and I remember all the fuss about all the pogoing causing chunks of the ceilings downstairs to come crashing down.... which

The Cap with the Cotswold’s Rail locomotive named in his honour. Yes, really, it is (number 47810, for train buffs) - how cool?

must've been fun for the shop owners when they got in to work on monday morning and saw the carnage. That's the joy of a sprung dancefloor I guess. Perfect for Joe Loss and Ray McVay, not quite so for the Clash and the Damned.” What memories do have of the Croydon scene in the late 70s early 80s? Whether places to play or

albums, admiring the sleeve design deciding which one to buy was tough though as they were considerably more expensive. The one's I did purchase in those days still mean vast amounts to me and I love 'em to this day. Soft Machine 3 and Stray's 1st album in particular. “Every saturday we'd purchase a

“Croydon’s changed a lot... mostly for the better. I do love the tram. But it’s the people that make the place special.” rehearse, record shops, places you used to drink or hang out, characters and so on? “Boneaparts Record shop in the High Street was where I'd swap my six and eight-pence for a shiny piece of black plastic whenever a new Small Faces single came out. You knew it would be quality before you even heard it... they were one of those bands who never did a duff track. Good record shop too. Flipping through the

few cans of brown ale from Sainsburys in the comparitively new Whitgift Centre and drink them while lazing about by the pond in the Fairfield gardens. This ritual was known as 'the usje' as in the usual. Then we might visit a photo booth and have some wacky pics taken on the way home. I've still got an album FULL of the blasted things! “We'd rehearse at my family home in Edith Rd, Thornton Heath..... my Dad must've been

8

remarkably tolerant as he'd just tell the constant stream of local residents who rang the doorbell to complain to 'join the queue'. “Even at an early age my chums and I were confirmed beer snobs..... we'd sometimes nip into some pub or other that sold keg garbage like Watneys Red Barrel, order a half pint, have a sip each and walk out laughing - continuing on our way to our REAL destination, the Railway Telegraph opposite Thornton Heath station. Now THAT was a place you could get a decent pint. A Ram and Special anyone? “Come to think of it - we had a bit of a thing about Youngs Pubs as I recall frequenting the Dog 'N Bull, the Plough and the Tamworth Arms a fair bit too. I'm not coming over like a rancid old alkie at all, am I?” Do you still come to Croydon regularly? “Indeed I do, to meet chums and to watch Palace at Selhurst Park. It has to be said that it's a rollercoaster of emotions being an

Eagles fan but we have more fun when a goal actually DOES go in than those who follow the big successful teams as for us we've literally been fighting for survival recently and goals REALLY count. We're only in the Championship in 2010 courtesy of that hard fought 2-2 draw in the last match of last season at Hillsborough. “Croydon's changed a lot in my lifetime... mostly for the better. I do love the trams. But it's the people that make the place special.” There is a real buzz that the Damned are playing Croydon. Is it gratifying that you still generate this sort of feeling here? “Yes, it's nice that people remember us with some affection. I

so much questions as hello's but we said we would pass them on so here they are: Vanessa asks: Do you still have a seagull on a stick? “It was actually a parrot Vannessa... strapped to my shoulder by the BBC props department for an episode of Top Of The Pops where I was singing Happy Talk. It went straight back into storage after the performance but people STILL ask if I've got it at home. “By the way, when you mention seagulls it means something entirely different to a Crystal Palace supporter.” John asks: Do you fancy a pint in the Ship sometime and when are

“It’s nice that people here remember The Damned with such affection... After all that we’ve done, coming back is pretty special” remember the time the Croydon Mayor of the time (Stuart Collins) introduced us onstage at the Fairfield Halls. After all the mayhem and chaos that surrounds this band I thought, what are we doing right all of a sudden? I believe he'll be there on July 31st too. “I don't know how many of your readers might know this but after my first couple of solo hits in the 80s (Happy Talk, Wot) I released a homage to the place I lived... imaginatively titled 'Croydon'. It didn't set the charts on fire but sold a good few locally. The song name checked my school Stanley Tech, the Fairfield Halls where I earned the dosh to buy my first amplifier.... oh, and my pet rabbit which had the run of our garden. In fact all our neighbours used to go beserk every time they found their flowers decimated by the bloomin' thing. “For those that haven't heard 'Croydon' it's on my myspace where you can download it for free if you fancy. (www.myspace.com/ thecaptainsensible) We have some questions from our readers, some of which are not

you next touring with Dead Men Walking? ;-) xxx “Dead Men Walking has a rolling lineup, fun to sing each other's songs in that 'unplugged' format though. It was at the Ashcroft Theatre we played too. Did I tell you I helped carry George Melly into his taxi there once after his show there? He had a bottle of scotch in each pocket...” Nick asks: I was once told by someone who claims to have been there that The Captain and Rat Scabies ran in the Leslie Arms shouting when they got signed true? Also heard that Happy Talk was recorded in Croydon - is that true? “Thats probably true seeing as Rat lived down Lower Addiscombe Rd at the time. “I concocted Happy Talk and MOST of my solo records at Matthew Fishers excellent studio in South Croydon. He went from Procul Harum and producing guitar twiddler Robin Trower to working with yours truly on my 80s 'synth pop' material. He did a great job though and I remember the 10

sessions being an absolute joy. You can hear it too on the records recently re-issued by Cherry Red Records might I add!” (www.cherryred.co.uk) 'Rock' says: Say "Hello" to Ray from me, I've known him from long before he was a Captain. He knows me as Ray from Beanos or the Black Witches. “Hi Rock... yes, we were known sarcastically by some in the South London bikers community as the Black Witches - LT Chapter. The LT standing for 'London Transport' owing to a shortage of motorbikes between us. It was obligatory in 'greaser' circles at the time to listen exclusively to rockers like Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, etc.... but I'd be secretly playing the Who and the Move when I got back home. Does this admission mean excommunication?? “Oh, remember that time I stuck my head into Beanos asking if you had a copy of Herman's Hermits 'No Milk Today' - and you said no problem, pulling out a pile of around seven of them. What a terrific record shop that was. Karen 'Nanni Six' says: Oh cool... I met him at The Ruts benefit gig. We were talking about The Gun Tavern... Great bloke.. x “Oh yes, the Gun. Another place with fun memories. I met Ralph McTell there once. He told me his big hit the Streets Of London was originally going to be called The Streets Of Croydon so I went and listened to the lyrics and yes, it all made perfect sense.” And finally, Woody asks: Will you play 'Curtain Call'? “I'm not sure the dark 18 minute Goth epic you're talking about would neccessarily be appropriate for a fun festival in a park but rest assured, we WILL play most of the favourites. A bit of punk, a dollop of goth and a splash of psychedelia for good measure...” Croydon Summer Festival, 1-8pm, 31st July 2010, Lloyd Park, Croydon. FREE entry! www.croydonsummerfestival.org

Not So Average Joe Dazed and Confused called him ‘brilliant’, the head of Xfm voted for him to win this year’s Testing 123, and he’s a very nice chap. Meet local lad Joe Hood, undoubtedly on his way to stardom, but first, on his way to play at the Croydon Summer Festival...

I

t’s a rainy day, some time ago, and we have a hangover. What better time, then, to interview the hugely talented winner of this year’s Testing 123 unsigned competition - singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist and, as it turns out, Soft Machine fan and all round nice chap Joe Hood - while behind us some trumpeters tootle and squeak their way loudly through a trad jazz set in The Green Dragon. Marvellous. As with all T123 winners, Joe is frightening young and almost annoyingly talented. Having been bought up with classical music and trained in the piano he’s developed into a multi instrumentalist with guitar, banjo and, oddly, oboe, and has been writing his own songs for

the last two years. He’s played all over the shop, including in Japan, and is set to make his Croydon Summer Fest debut this year on the world stage tent, where he’ll be playing with a full band as opposed to solo, as he was for T123. We would suggest very strongly that you nip along to his Croyfest set as here is a young man who’s going places, with his work gaining positive responses from people who know. For example, he appeared in Music Week’s Top Ten New Songwriters playlist and in Dazed and Confused, who have tipped him as ‘brilliant’ and ‘indefinable’. His 'Call And Response' E.P. has been aired on BBC 6, Diesel Radio and Resonance FM, with BBC6’s Tom Robinson praising new single

‘Lonely Planet’. Pretty good stuff, oh, and he’s just been commissioned to write the music for a major new threepart BBC documentary and his soundtrack for a short film won "Best Score" at the Shoestring Film Festival in New York. Annoyingly talented, do you see? Unusually, for one so young, Joe is as knowledgeable as he is precocious - we asked him what his musical inspiration was and frankly there was too much to list, which is always a good thing, from jazz to modern chart stuff, Soft Machine and Robert Wyatt's solo material, and his lyrical content also has wide influences (i.e. the tune ‘Bonjour Tristesse’ was taken from the title of a Francois Sagan novel). Happily though, he isn’t precious about his music, describing his recordings as ‘DIY at this stage’ and he’s refreshingly frank about his creative processes involving looking for thing in other people’s music to use and bounce off of. And he does a mean version of ‘My Lovely Horse’ apparently. If we had more space, we could go on, and we will come back to Joe after the festival and do the full interview we said we would but for the time being, suffice to say he’s a lovely chap, and a chap with an achingly bright musical future, so check him out at the free festival before he goes absolutely massive. We’ll see you down the front. Croydon Summer Festival, 31st July 2010, 1-8pm, Lloyd Park, Croydon. FREE entry!

Chin-chin ladies and gentlemen, let us perambulate toward London’s historic Bedford Square for a ‘celebration of athletic ineptitude and immaculate trouser creases’, some delightful cocktails and rather a surfeit of silliness. Welcome to the Chap Olympiad...

R

egular readers may recall our last trip to the Chap Olympiad, way back in 2007 and the most unusual day we had. Well, this year we’re going again, on Saturday 17th July, so we thought we’d precis what the dickens it’s all about, and update you as to this year’s delightful entertainments... The Chap Olympiad has been held annually since 2005 in the gardens of Bedford Square, the only complete Georgian square left in London, and is regularly attended by over 800 people, both competitors and spectators, who gather for what must be the least taxing event in the sporting calendar. Perspiration is actively discouraged, ungentlemanly competitive-ness is frowned upon and any sort of training shoe apart from, at a push, a good old fashioned canvas plimsoll would most probably see you ejected with the cries of disdain you so rightly deserve ringing in your ears. In fact, any distasteful attributes such as sporting ability are eschewed for the altogether more sensible judging criteria of panache,

savoir faire and cut of trouser. For those who don’t know, I should probably explain what ‘The Chap’ is. It’s a tongue in cheek magazine, available by subscription or through the better class of news-vendors, which ‘takes a wry look at the modern world through the steamedup monocle of a more refined age, occasionally getting its sock suspenders into a twist at the unspeakable vulgarity of the twenty-first century. Since 1999, the Chap has been championing the rights of that increasingly marginalised and discredited species... the gentleman. The Chap believes that a society without courteous behaviour and proper headwear is a society on the brink of moral and sartorial collapse, and it seeks to reinstate such outmoded but indispensable gestures as hat doffing, giving up one's seat to a lady and regularly using a trouser press.’ This year’s event is sponsored by Bourne and Hollingsworth - the group behind Prohibition and The Blitz Party who, we’re told, will be providing their trademark classic cocktails alongside beer, wine and soft drinks for thirsty guests. There will also be food served all day (for the first time, we believe) from luncheon to supper, so chap ‘athletes’ and the rest of us can munch heartily on sandwiches and hog roast, take afternoon tea with home-made cakes and delicacies, or snack on ice cream and other typically chap-like fodder. Whereas in previous years the invitation to come in period dress was there, but not really enforced, this year all guests are expected to make at least some effort to get into the spirit of the thing, and rightly so, if I’ve spent hours creasing my chinese-silk smoking jacket I do not expect to asked to sip my cocktail next to some herbert wearing, Godforbid, jeans. it’s just not cricket, wot? This year’s actual events include: Martini Knockout Relay Teams of four must mix a perfect dry martini (without the aid of a butler) over 14

a gruelling ten yard course, before having it judged by a connoisseur. Cucumber Sandwich Discus Individuals must hurl a cucumber sandwich on a china plate as far as possible, with points deducted for getting mud in the sandwich Moustache Wrestling The bearded versus the moustachioed, the object of this event is to pluck a single hair from one’s opponent’s facial plumage Necktie Kwon-Do A duel to the death (of one’s immaculate knot) with ties, where the object is to garrotte one’s opponent with his own neckwear. Umbrella Jousting In the medieval tradition, chaps on bicycles approach each other along a boundary and use their brollies to knock each other off. Bowler hats are their only protection Bounders A chap must say something so caddish to a lady that he receives a slap. The cad with the reddest face, but the wryest smile, is the winner. As well as watching the competitors undergo these delightful entertainments, you can expect to see a most rousing initial parade (led last time by ‘Fruity’ Metcalfe), live music from big bands, quartets, piano players and cabaret singers as well as country fair side shows and old fashioned lawn games, such as a coconut shy, boules and hoopla. All in all then, a splendid day out to be had by all discerning gentlemen and ladies of which we are at least two, and thus we look forward immensely to greeting you heartily, with Martini in hand and rough shag in pipe, next to the cocktail marquee. Top hole. Tickets are £15 and sold in advance via Ticketweb or by calling 020 7636 8228. www.thechap.net www.bourneandhollingsworth.com

t’s back, our homage to two of our favourite telly programmes, The Hoobs and Harry Hill’s TV Burp and our very own version of ‘where has the knitted character been this week’. Except without a knitted character, and without it being on telly, and with substantially shabbier prizes, and monthly. In case you weren’t around last issue, here’s a brief precis of it all: 1) Every month we’ll deposit the Editor’s very own prized Groove Hoob fluffy toy somewhere in one of our stockists’ premises in sunny Croydon or the surrounding bits where Deep gets distributed. We’ll give you a tiny clue as to his

whereabouts. 2) You spot Groove. 3) E-mail where you saw our furry friend to hello@deep-london.co.uk with the subject line ‘Groove’, or text Groove and where you saw him to 07910 506197. (Texts charged at standard Virgin message rate) 4) Win a prize of either a) something crap and fluffy which we’ve won in the groping grabber machine / coconut shy on Brighton Pier, or b) something else we’ve found lying around the office, or even c) something quite good. 5) Get your picture in the magazine and gain an immense amount of kudos.

Remember, we don’t expect you to go trawling all over South London looking for a green Hoob but if in the course of your travels this month you happen to spot a green Hoob then really, what could be easier than to let us know and you may win a lovely prize (and get your picture in the mag and get kudos etc etc). This month’s clue: Groove has visited the Water-Tower plaza and is now in a nearby PUB. Closing date for this month’s competition is 5th August 2010. Good luck and happy Hoobspotting...

A

couple of month’s worth of There’s Groove, firstly, May, there he is, behind the bar at The Oval, where he picked up a rather fetching necklace. Congrats to Jane Holdsworth who spotted him there. And last month, rather topically, there’s Groove, dangling behind the bar of our local South African pub, The Glamorgan, and congrats to Darren Weeks, who spotted him. We’ve had loads of entries recently, so thanks to everyone who’s entered. Keep ‘em peeled this month and good luck! 16

H

ello, good evening and welcome. Well, we’re just getting back to normality in Harbinger Towers after the excitement of the World Cup. Edith and I tried to let it all go over our heads but, of course, got dragged into the furore and eventually got quite enthusiastic about it all. Edith ebayed for a lovely red vuvuzela which unfortunately arrived the day after Black Sunday. Those South Africans seems to have entirely got hold of the wrong end of the stick (quite literally) using them to make such an infernal racket – anybody with an ounce of common sense can see

would ever arrive and decamped to the pub down the road to catch the second half in there. I do hope the bus drivers have now fully recovered from their food poisoning/migraine/bad back (delete as appropriate) and are back to providing the service they get paid to do. And talking of getting paid, I was amused by a proposal by the Government that they should pay people to give up smoking and lose weight. Never one to miss out on an opportunity to make a bit of money, I’ve now decided to start smoking 40 a day and live on doughnuts and burgers

Anyone with an ounce of common sense can see that the Vuvezela’s best use, when turned upside down, is as a rather effective ‘she-wee’... that their best use is as a rather effective she-wee. With a bit of careful positioning, I’ll be able to keep my place at the front for Iron Maiden and avoid the portaloos completely at Sonisphere. (Note to self: must remember to tell Edith to stop using it to herald the arrival of the pizzaboy). I was a bit miffed that Edith had put the whole month’s tequila money on a bet that England would win - I was rather pinning my hopes on North Korea on the basis that it would be beneficial for world peace. I almost missed the bit where we got knocked out as I had decided to have a nice day out at Crystal Palace and visit the little farm there – I’ve tried this several times before and always arrived just as they lock the gates. Despite waiting 45 minutes in 90 degree sun for a 157 bus which never came, I got there in the end and spent a lovely day chatting to Goldie and Patches (did I ever tell you I can speak pig?), aaaahing at the sweet little baby alpaca, and calculating the correct humidity for keeping a tarantula happy. At about 2.30 I headed back to the bus stop but that was as far as I got. By 3.45 I gave up all hope that a 157

catch their long-awaited comeback show at Scream Lounge where they were showcasing their new songs. They played to a rather Anvil-sized crowd (if you saw the documentary you’ll know exactly what I mean) but despite the low turnout they both played blinding sets and following their various festival dates (Download, Bulldog Bash, Bloodstock) this year, both bands are set to move onwards and upwards. Anyway, there’s plenty of live music about this month. Scream Studios regularly feature bands, including some great tribute acts, and the Ship showcases local talent on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are some brilliant covers bands around too, including Chamelion and Brightwhite who play regularly on Saturday nights in various local pubs and are well worth a listen. Anyway, enjoy the sunshine while it lasts and I’ll catch you at the bar. Auntie May returns next month.

as I’m obviously saving the NHS far too much money by living a fairly healthy lifestyle. How about rewarding those of us who try to stay healthy and sending the bill to those who cost the NHS a fortune due to selfinflicted reasons. Just a thought. Edith and I had a rather shivery day out at New Addington People’s Carnival the other day. “Oh you must come!” Edith squeaked. “They’re doing laser wood carving and….er… ChainsawQuest”. As you can imagine, and as we discovered on arrival, it wasn’t quite like that. Still, Edith won lots of lovely goodies on the CAB tombola and I discovered that it’s worth taking a coat when venturing to New Addington, even if it’s sub-tropical in South Croydon. Musically, this month I’ve been saving up my pennies for Sonisphere but I did decide to follow local boys Godsized and Mordecai up to the Barfly in Camden, being unable to Mordecai

ok, so not a grassy knoll in the purest sense, but look how pretty! The royal albert is Right in the middle of Crystal Palace with, just over the road, some amazing views down the hill to the city. To the side of the pub is this little Oasis, which backs onto a pedestrian footpath so is pretty quiet. It has quaint benches, a lovely floral arch and really well stocked and looked after flower beds. Apparently the garden has attracted the attention of ‘Croydon in Bloom’ and in our opinion, rightly so. Royal Albert 42 Westow Hill, Crystal Palace,

We do have a children’s activities area on site with CRB checked attendants and stewards, but under 8’s must be accompanied by an adult - it is not a crèche. • Respect other people - Have fun and sample the delights of the festival but please note, as every year, there will be a full festival security team and anybody causing a disturbance or breaking the law will be removed and handed over to the Police. In case of any emergency, follow the stewards’ instructions. Don’t… • Bring Animals - No animals are allowed on site, except guide dogs. • No Glass on site - Don’t bring glass of any sort onto site as it will be taken away at the entrance. • No drugs or weapons - A search policy on entrance is in place and the Police will be on hand to deal with any issues.
