deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • www.facebook.com/deeplondon • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...welcome to issue 97 and what could prove a slightly hallucinogenic editorial, as I currently have a stinking cold, with extra florets of ‘flu. I blame either the change in the weather, or, more likely, the ‘orrible little herberts coughing away on the train to Fontwell the other day. Anyway, I feel odd, and ache so much it actually hurts to type. Still, we’ll power through, although that would be easier if the workmen who dug a bloody great hole outside my window a couple of months ago and who then buggered off hadn’t decided to reappear, as if by magic, this morning. And also if that purple weasel playing the banjo and grinning at the other end of the table would give it a rest... But back to this issue, and because we haven’t done anything on the sport of kings for a while, and this year’s Cheltenham Festival looks like an absolute corker, it’s something of a round-about racing special. We’ve obviously got your Cheltenham preview, a couple of alternative venues to visit and the Croydon equivalent of the Gold Cup, the annual inter-pub pancake race. Incidentally, if anyone cares, my top tips for Cheltenham are Midnight Chase in the Gold Cup (as long as Dougie Costello’s on board), which I believe is also our resident tipster, Flash Harry’s choice and, of course, Royal Bonsai, currently entered in both the Fred Winter and Triumph Hurdles, but whichever one he runs in, I’ll be throwing some hard-earned at him... Elsewhere, for the non-racing enthusiasts we’ve all our usuals, and we’ve got a bit of culture, for a change, with an interview with Ellen Kent, bringing her version of Verdi’s opera La Traviata to Croydon in March, as well as some of the finest Indian food we’ve had for a while to introduce you to. Oh, there’s a thing - I’ve just realised we’ve done ‘A Day at the Races’ and ‘A Night at the Opera’ - a coincidental treat for all Marx Brothers / Queen fans out there. I shall use that on the cover. Serendipity is our middle name, you know... Finally, plans race (race, see!) ahead for our Olympics Croydopolytype game, and it’s all rather exciting. We’re still busy devising away in the reclaimed shed, now renamed the Deep Olympic evil genius nerve-centre, but as a small heads up, I’d suggest that you start practising your darts and pool, as well as maybe your tiddliwinks, swing-ball and thumb-wrestling... Right, that’s it from me, and given that in the course of writing this I’ve gone from being hotter than the surface of the sun to feeling like someone’s just dropped ice-cubes down my back, I’m off for a lie down in a darkened room. Hope you all enjoy this issue and that you have a couple of winners this month. See you next time. Avanti, allons-y, cheers! With hairy horsey chins. Neigh! Your Bonsai Editor - hoping that Cheltenham Angela xxx winnings will finally buy one of these...

LAT RACING HAS MANY FESTIVALS, National Hunt has but one - but for excitement it usually surpasses all the fenceless carnivals of the summer rolled into one. Four days of what should be the best gambling and drinking experience of a punter’s year. And if it isn’t, then quite frankly you ain’t doing it right. The jump racing circus steams ahead all winter in the direction of the Festival. Winners and losers are evaluated; horses are either ‘Festival horses’ or they are not. It’s as simple as that. Or is it? There’ll be some upsets, some major gambles landed - and some major cock-ups as well.
For trainers, to have a winner anywhere is good; but to have one at Cheltenham is really where it’s at. Barring Aintree, there’s nothing big left left after this so the owners, trainers and jockeys of every horse are out to play, and when you’ve called it right or think you have, when your horse is in the first three slugging it out in the final furlong, well, if you don’t get a kick out of that it’s time to take up trainspotting. The official title of the Cheltenham Festival is the National Hunt Meeting. This originated in 1860, when the National Hunt Chase was first held at Market Harborough and titled the Grand

FLASH HARRY looks in his crystal ball. I GOTTA HORSE! Yes, well. Maybe. Your ever-loving Harry has been a busy boy with many matters and hasn’t been as slavish on the Form Book as perhaps he might have been. Plus it’s hard to really make confident selections until we
see how the ground comes up. As I often say to the editor of this magazine: It ain’t called the Turf for nothing. So I thought I’d put up a few horses to keep an eye out for, and if they shorten in price on the day, maybe you should think about putting your dinner money on ‘em. BABY MIX looks nice for the Triumph Hurdle. On his performance at Kempton on Feb 25 (nice touch) he could show out nicely and beat Grumeti, who is favourite. S*d favourites. But if the ground is soft, stay away from the Baby. BURTON PORT has an entry in the Grand Annual and the Gold Cup. Keep your eyes on him: he gave Long Run, the current Gold Cup champ, a fright on his comeback run, and Long Run only won by luck and panic. This Burton
National Hunt, featuring the one race alongside other steeplechases. After taking place at a number of locations, including Cheltenham in 1861, the race returned to Cheltenham in 1904 and 1905. It was staged over a new course established at Prestbury Park, Cheltenham in 1902, although racing had taken place in the park previously. The National Hunt Meeting was held at Warwick from 1906 to 1910, but returned to Prestbury Park in 1911 and has remained there to this day. If you are new to racing Cheltenham is an excellent place to start. You will see thousands of grown men and women staking a combined total of hundreds of millions of pounds on, essentially, animals running across a meadow. But of course that is mere reductionism. There is magic to it.
Port will go for a burton – and at a decent price, mark my words. Hold On Hulio and the wonderfullynamed SHAKALAKABOOMBOOM are also chalked up in the Annual at huge prices. POUNGACH in the Pertemps looks good value. Through a hazy gin-soaked memory I seem to remember thinking him a bit of a prospect. I fancy COLOUR SQUADRON a little bit at 16/1 in the Supreme Novices Hurdle. This horse was unlucky two months back when beaten at Sandown by Nicky Henderson’s Captain Conan. Colour Squadron was a bit green but should have won. Nothing else got even 14 lengths close to the Captain. A lot can happen in three months and if Colour Squadron’s been brushed up on his hurdling he could be a nice punt.

The Cheltenham Festival, 13th-16th March 2012 And magic fuelled by good old Guinness: happily the Festival coincides with St Patrick’s Day. The most prestigious race of the Festival is the Gold Cup. It is the race all jumps trainers want to win, more so even than the Grand National. There is always drama and emotion. Last year when young pretender, Long Run, saw off the two modern legends of the contest, Kauto Star and Denman, Channel 4 Racing presenter Alistair Down admitted to having tears flowing down his cheeks as he wrote an article immediately afterwards about the old guard being vanquished. Who will win the Gold Cup? It’s a question dyed-in-the-wool Turf followers start asking each other round about half an hour after the previous one is run, but the spirit of enquiry tends to strengthen about November.
How to do the Festival
Can anything beat Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle? I doubt it, but I live in a world where favourites get short shrift, even when they are obviously brilliant as is the ‘Fly. The only favourite I have ever loved was Sea the Stars. So can Flashy find a way of getting the Fly beat? He’s a beast and he acts on any surface, but seeing a horse as insanely good as ROCK ON RUBY chalked up at 14/1 makes me feel I have to have an itchy little punt. Rock on Ruby could by the fly in the favourite’s ointment … I liked INVICTUS, and indeed backed him, a fortnight ago when he thrashed Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls’ up-and-coming novice chasers Bob’s Worth and Silvianaco Conti. He wants monitoring in the Jewsons. As does BIG ZEB in his battle against Sizing
Europe in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. Finally, the Gold Cup. I think Long Run’s jumping is suspect and, though I say game on the boy to Sam Waley-Cohen for being the first amateur to win the race since gawd knows when, we must hold this favourite in some contempt. Can Kauto Star do it? I doubt it but I’ll be the first to dance a jig of joy if he does. But let’s be sensible. The two horses in the race that interest me are BURTON PORT and MIDNIGHT CHASE, with a preference for the latter. He won the Argento in a cool, calm and collected manner and jumped well all the way, and I don’t see why with a bit of luck and if the ground is right, he can’t win this. But remember, Burton Port had been off for year or something when he got
I have never been to it, suspecting the physical experience of being a spectator there would be like being trapped in a rock festival where everyone is inexplicably wearing tweed trousers and cheesecutter caps and the queue for toilets, food and alcohol longer than any sane man can bear. I don’t know about you, but I don’t fancy that one bit. When the bonsai editor of this very organ visited it last year (or was it the year before?) she confirmed my suspicions. So I watch it on the telly; the coverage is amazing – you get in close and see the mud flying. Boozewise, I tend to steer clear until the day’s action is over – or if I have taken a rotten pounding I may have a couple of large scotches to steady the nerves. Best way is to have two days watching it on the
telly at home (followed by spreading your winnings round the boozer in the evening) and two days in the pub with pals. Whichever way you do it – make sure you have some Guinness and some Johnny Walker Black Label for emergencies. I book four days off work, set aside £500 and bet 5 or 10 per cent of that per punt. I came out with a handsome profit last year even factoring in the losing bets, and had only one regret: that having found Oiseau De Nuit at 55/1 on Betfair in the Grand Annual I didn’t go in again when it traded mid-race at 75/1! Yes, Cheltenham is the time for deliciously-priced horses in top notch races. THAT is why it’s Christmas for adults.
VERY close to Long Run a few weeks back first time out. He could be a very dangerous port in a storm. GRAND CRUS is an alternative, but something tells me he will win this race next year. That’s it ladies and gentlemen, and remember: always smoke heavily, drink heavily, snog heavily, and bet your dinner money on what YOU fancy. Tatty bye. Midnight Chase

erdi’s ‘La Traviata’ is often described as his most intimate opera. And that sentence is often described as the one that makes most people stop reading, but hang on a minute, because the production coming to Fairfield in March is as far from the stuffy, incomprehensible, elitist idea of opera most people have as can be. Petal Dunwoody caught up with its creator, Ellen Kent, to get under the skin of singing in Italian... Can you give us some background, some general detials of your show at the Fairfield? ”It's a big show with about 70 people on the road - we have a full orchestra, full chorus. There’s a young cast, a beautiful young lead playing Violetta, Maria Tonina, who won a scholarship to the Vienna State Opera and two handsome male lead tenors both from the Odessa Opera. “I specialise in opera which is accessible, friendly and affordable for the people, so in order to get a lot of people to come through the door you have to have them wanting to come because
they see it as a form of entertainment and not an elitist sport. “My operas are traditional with a little spin put on them; the Ellen Kent touch we’ve had brass bands, dogs, I’ve done Madame Butterfly with Koi Carp in huge fish tanks on the stage. Traviata has interesting scenery - I have a fountain with cherubs, lots of interesting things on the stage, chandeliers and ball gowns. It's a very believable story, you have to play it for what it is. “That's what Verdi did. He read the novel based on La Dame aux Camelias by Dumas the younger who had an affair with Marie Duplessis - the most famous French courtesan ever. She died at 23 from consumption (tubercolosis). She was the mistress of Napoleon’s finance minister having been on the streets of Paris as a 12 year old prostitute when she became who she was. She was extraordinarily beautiful. Dumas had an affair with her but after 11 months she went back to her lover because he was so jealous, it all ended in tears. He went away to Spain and he came back and there was an auction. He

went to the auction of these beautiful Parisian apartments and he asked "whose was this apartment?". They told him it was Marie Duplessis' - she died here of consumption in great debt. He looked around the rooms and found a book he had given her and, this is a true story, it had a dried Camelia pressed in the pages, which is synonymous with Traviata. “In my opera instead of just having the Overture I have added on the auction in a symbolic way. We have surtitles screens with English translation above your head. It's as accessible as possible.” This is not a way of getting into more formal opera for your audience, is that fair? “Opera was never meant to be elitist or formal, it was written by Puccini and Verdi to entertain the masses, not a tiny elitist group. Verdi wrote for the people so did Puccini. Verdi, who wrote Traviata, wrote Nabucco as a freedom opera because of the civil war going on in Italy. “They were people who spoke to the

people of the countries where they lived. It became an ordinary sport. If you go to Eastern Europe where my companies come from - for instance in the Ukraine - you have opera houses of some considerable size in every town. Where are you going to get that in England? France had that but it is dying down. There is a mania for opera in Moldova, Ukraine, Romania, Latvia - you get opera houses everywhere. That’s how it still should be and how it was when Verdi and Puccini were alive, they wrote as people wrote plays for touring companies - it was a simple entertainment.” What's the background for you working with Eastern European companies? “That's very long story but I'll give you a potted version; I did classics at University and started off as an actress. I won a scholarship to go to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, there were about 12 of us who’ve all gone on to do interesting things. I acted for a while, did TV and radio. I got married and had a
seats 7000 people?’. I said I could but I don't think 7 French actors and 50 goldfish would do much good! That’s what I was touring at the time from lisle in France, a fabulous show for kids "Why the fish left the river" if I remember. 50 live goldfish, that's the French for you! I got my idea for fish in Butterfly form that show. “I dont know why I said it, I had never done it before, but I said "well opera might work" just off the top of my head. They all nodded wisely ‘oh that's a good idea lets do an opera’. I used my wits and managed to jump off people I knew. I got an opera consultant and ended up in Romania in Bucharest with the Romanian National Opera's ‘Nabucco’. I took Richard Morrison from the Times out with me to see what I was bringing in. “It was 1992, and I was very cheeky, you know. I went to the president of Romania and asked if I could borrow his plane! And he said yes, he had Ceausescu’s old plane in those days, a Boeing 707 with a Romanian flag on the
“If you came to my opera you would have a damn good evening out - you can follow it with the surtitles and it’s like watching a classic film on TV” child. I was in a TV series with Roy Marsden up in Yorkshire and I realised that with my child about to start school I would have to give it up so I formed my own little production company, in my kitchen almost. “My ex-husband is a bloody good writer we got together and did ‘Vox Pop Victoria’, based on Henry Mayhew's work on the London poor. I worked with another actress playing 25 characters each, both sexes by 7 to 80 - fantastic acting. We launched and toured it ending up in the Young Vic in London and had really good reviews in the London press comparing us to a potted version of Les Mis, and that's how it started. “New writing didn't make any money at all, we couldn't survive off it, so we moved into European Children's touring theatre - companies from National Children's Theatre from Stuttgart, Strasbourg, Lisle, Brussels - we bought them all to England, funded heavily by the Arts Council and God knows who. In 1992 Rochester Castle, who funded me (I lived in Rochester), said to me ‘we’re funding you for this European stuff and the Channel Tunnel is opening, would you be able to put something on in our Castle Gardens for our summer music festival, or whatever we’re doing, which 8
tail. I flew the whole of the Romanian National Opera - 200 people, all the sets for Nabucco - in the belly of the plane. I had over half a million sponsorship I had been able to raise from Eurotunnel, Romania, Shell, Unilever. All the press came up. No one had ever bought in a foreign national opera company before. It was creating history really. “They put on Nabucco at Rochester Castle gardens and it was a sell out. There was a 10 minute standing ovation when Va Pensiero (the dance of the Hebrew slaves) was played. It was very emotional because of course of Ceausescu, the Romanian flag flying over the castle battlements, the sun was sinking down over the river. It was a fabulous, emotional experience. I thought "this is it, this is what I want to do". And that 21 years ago.” We understand that you are getting local kids involved in the production. “Yes, I use a lot of stage school children, I’ve used them for years, and I use local operatic societies to come and dress up in beautiful dresses and fill the
spaces at the back of the stage. I can't tour a whole room full of people. It's not a singing part but it's a wonderful opportunity to do a bit of waltzing in the background. It gives them a huge opportunity to work with us.” I'm not an opera buff, I have been to formal operas and found them sometimes to be quite intimidating? “If you came to my opera you would have a damn good evening out, you would love the story, you could follow it with the surtitles and it's like watching a classic film by Jane Austen or Dickens or something like that, the classics you get on TV, which I love. Pride and Prejudice - that kind of content and style - is what my operas are like.” La Traviata at The Fairfield Halls, 27th March at 7.30pm. Tickets from £21-£35 (+ bkg fee). ello again my dears and welcome back. This month I’m rambling on a bit about technology, and in particular that mainly useless but time-consuming invention known as The Internet. Those of my ‘older’ readers may possibly remember my first and to date only foray into the virtual world when we were all hooked permanently up to some old relic called Myspace. As with most things these days (film cameras, analogue TV, vinyl records, my Sony Walkman (but more on that later), bus tickets, fountain pens etc.) technology soon renders them completely obsolete and a new and inevitably more expensive invention comes along. So far I’ve resisted most of this, being incapable of understanding it anyway, but, inspired by the lovely Stephanie Darkes and her illuminating article last month, I decided to dip my toe into the world of Twitter and see what the water was like. My only experience of twittering, or tweeting, to date has been my ever more manic efforts to stop the neighbourhood squirrel from stealing the contents of my bird feeder when my back is turned - so I carefully positioned my computer in front of the window and armed myself with a long stick with which to rap menacingly on the glass, and signed myself up. This new venture has unfortunately got off to a rather slow start due to my being called away on Important State Business at short notice, but there I am @MayHarbinger, glancing behind me at various intervals to see if I’m being followed and trying to decide whether my fascination with hot glue guns makes it worthwhile being inundated with the guff you seem to get sent when you tell Twitter you like them. I fear this may be yet another flash in the pan, but I’ll give it a couple of months and if enough of you join in, maybe a bit longer. Back to the saga of my Sony Walkman, otherwise known as “The Purple Thing”. My faithful old companion, being second hand when I
got it myself, had become like a lot of us folks past our prime, completely unable to function without being ended up adopting an orphan. plugged into a power source (mine’s (incidentally, Croydon’s own Nick Jack Daniel’s). This rendered it rather Chadwick has developed an app called useless as a Walkman - more of a busmate (find it in the itunes shop (just Sitman actually - so I decided some £0.69) or on facebook open-heart surgery was required and www.facebook.com/busmate) - which utilised the internet for something will let you check times while out and useful for a change and ordered a about - more on that next month - Ed) replacement battery. Now I ought to There are obviously many other uses say at this point that a Walkman for The Internet, some of them legal, battery is not designed to be a and clearly I’ve only scratched the replaceable part (unlike a mobile surface but I do sometimes wonder just phone battery) so a certain amount of how we managed without it. How else courage, expertise with a small would I be able to walk down a road magnetic screwdriver and a in Cockermouth without leaving my watchmaker’s eyeglass are required to house or play a game where you have get to the point where you have to to get a drunk cartoon man to walk lever the old battery out (Sony cement it on with industrial strength glue). The along without falling over? Anyway, I’m cordially inviting you to screws inside are the size of flies’ follow me at @MayHarbinger and look testicles and they have an uncanny forward to wasting hours of valuable ability to hide underneath the toaster, drinking time with you. but eventually the new battery was Auntie May returns next month... installed, the screws replaced and, Hey Presto! I can once again wander about with my ears full of Rammstein completely oblivious to people asking me for directions and unable to hear the announcement on the bus saying it’s being diverted. And that brings me to the one other brilliant use I have found for the internet. Just the other day I stumbled upon the discovery that you can enter the bus stop number into the TfL website and it tells you exactly how long until the next bus is due. This enables me to time leaving home (or the pub) to coincide with the bus arriving. Marvellous. You can do it by text too, but it costs you money and when An original Sony Walkman. Look how sleek! This was once cutting edge. For our younger readers Edith tried it she got the that hole is for something called a CASSETTE... number wrong and almost 10

s mentioned last month, when we popped in to the Windmill in St James’ Road, on the offchance, we were a bit surprised to find it had changed hands. Gone was the old Irish manager, and in his place a delightful Indian couple, husband and wife Dashi and Dipti, who, after a chat and a lovely dinner that Petal and I enjoyed one evening, kindly invited us and some mates down to do a full review. Skip forward a couple of weeks and the Deep Massive retaurant review posse of your Bonsai Editor, Petal Dunwoody, Anna and Nat, Alan ‘I’m only staying out for one’ Tovey and Ritchie ‘Time Bomb’ Hudson are in full effect on a Sunday lunchtime to sample the Windmill’s many delights. I say full effect, as it turns out we were, to a man, hungover, thanks to various exertions the previous evening, but we weren’t going to let that stop us. As it transpires, five of our number are curry fans, but Nat doesn’t actually do spicy, but that’s not a problem here because the Windmill pride themselves on offering not only authentic Indian cuisine, but also your British pub grub, including traditional Sunday Roasts with all the trimmings, so she’s plumped for one of those instead. A perusal of the menu and there are some confused looks at the inclusion of Szechuan Chicken, but as Dipti explains, Dashi is from Mumbai, which has a huge range of cultural influences, and this is exactly the cuisine you’d find there as street food. We’re sold, and let Dipti give us a few pointers as to what to have to get the most variety and authenticity. As long as the marinated lamb chops, which we had before and are absolutely divine, are included, I
don’t mind what else we try. The mixed grill platter (chicken tikka, malai murgh tikka, sheekh kebab and the fabled lamb chops) is recommended (and arrives, sizzling like a good’un) along with the Butter Chicken main and Kolapuri Chicken. We also go for the Szechuan Chicken, Chilli Fish and Methi Chicken and some breads. Mr Tovey, who eats raw chillies for fun, reckons his dinner may not prove to be spicy enough, so Dipti also supplies him with a separate bowl of raw green chillies, just in case... Nat’s roast arrives first and it looks, and reportedly tastes, lovely and then the Indian tapas dishes arrive. The Windmill do a range of both tapas and main dishes, but to be honest, as soon transpires, it doesn’t really matter what you choose as this is a real sharing, social dining experience, with everyone trying bits of everyone elses meals and declaring them universally to be absolutely delicious. The pub itself hasn’t changed and still retains a local feel, but a friendly local feel. The bar staff have remained, and the locals have taken the new owners to their hearts. Last time we were in they were engaged in teaching Dashi the finer points of a game of darts (he’s now quite good, apparently). The friendly vibe continues as the couple on the next table, having seen us taking pictures of our dinners like a bunch of nutters, insist on us taking a picture of their dessert, which I didn’t catch what it was but which looked rather good. Unfortunately, we were all too full of delicious curried (and roasted!) goodness to partake of afters. The Indian tapas dishes, more than big enough to constitute a meal for one
person on their own. start at around £4.95 and main meat dishes at around £5.95, but as mentioned, you really would be missing the point, we think, if you didn’t grab a big group of mates, order a load of dishes and just dive in. And as mentioned, you can take your non-curry-loving friends too! As an added bonus, the Windmill is a racing pub. Their Cheltenham Festivals are, apparently, one of the best laughs around, and we’ll be down there this year finding out. Dipti has admitted that the craic at the Windmill is such that even she, who has no real leanings horse-wise, gets into the nags at Cheltenham time. (There isn’t a shop bookie nearby, but they do have wi-fi so placing your bets won’t be a problem.) In short then, the Windmill Pub is still a pub, still family-friendly and still a mere 6 minutes or so walk form East Croydon, but a pub serving some of the finest and most interesting Indian cuisine (and traditional pub grub!) around, served by some of the nicest people around. I have a feeling that this is the sort of place I could lose days in, watching the racing with a cold alcoholic beverage or seven while intermittently eating exotic and beautiful dishes straight from the streets of Mumbai. When the sun comes out and the huge beer-garden’s flowers begin to bloom, I may never eat at home again... With the flat season almost upon us, new correspondent and racing photographer Simon Sparrow takes a trip to not-so-sunny Folkestone...
“
We try to do the very best we can”, the gate-person said on steering me towards the press office. And they do. They really do! Folkestone racecourse sits in beautiful Kent countryside between Sellenge and Hythe. It has somehow retained a comforting local feel that many of the bigger tracks have lost, while still getting on with the very professional business of running horse races. There were some elements, they still unsaddle losing horses by the side of the track for example, that could easily be likened to something out of a James Herriot novel and from what I saw, greatly added to the pleasure of the meeting. There are two bars for those who like to deaden the pain of another losing favourite and what looked like a very good restaurant overlooking the track. There were also a series of luxury boxes, one of which appeared to have been dedicated to none other than the mighty Wells and Young. There was a time when this correspondent would have been tempted to gatecrash on the grounds that by now he must near own the company. I suspect from the view they were getting would have made it well worth while. As to business of having a bet, I counted about 15 on-course bookmakers, including the unforgettable booming Barry Dennis. I also noticed a large Tote office that
seemed very popular with many of the punters, who despite the risky weather were checking the form in the large grass area next to the parade ring. As tends to happen when you’re carrying photographic kit and a press ticket, one chap, I will call him Tom because he told me his wife didn’t know he was going racing – asked me if I’d had any ‘good sniffs’ about the day’s runners. Then and without pausing, went on to tell me how last time he had been let down by one of the jockeys or he would have made ‘litrally fowlsens’. Tom was a man of few teeth and much chin growth. His last words during this splendid wholly one-sided exchange were: ‘dropped his arms, no kiddin’, dropped his bloody arms just before the winning post’. I attended an evening meeting on 21 July. The card offered class 5 and 6 races, so there were bound to be some surprises. All Honesty duly obliged in the first at 25/1 to give William Buick the first of his two winners. Buick’s second winner, Icena Girl (evens), narrowly beat Roman Province, who, like Equity Card in the same race might just be ones to watch. Kirsty Milczarek was her usual cheery self, happily signing autographs for anyone who asked and was rightly rewarded with a smashing winning ride on Efistorm (3/1) in the third. Dane O’Neill replaced the luckless Jim Crowley, who had been unable to get to the track
and missed out on at least two winners, to take the fourth on Rambo Will (11/2). Peaches, ridden by Amy Scott, went on to win the fifth (9/2), whilst Jack Mitchell steered Medaille D’Or home to win the sixth at 5/2. For those still able, Sellenge offers the Dukes Head for the racing enthusiast in search of a post-meeting tipple - or weep. I found Hythe to be a lovely seaside town, offering far too many places to lead the weak willed astray. We tried the Red Lion Hotel and the Three Mariners before heading home. Do give Folkestone races a try if you can. Despite pretty rotten weather it only took us 80 minutes to get back to Croydon by car. The train to Westernhanger is, as toothless Tom would say, litrally a few minutes from the track and takes roughly 90 minutes from Charing Cross. Next fixture 5th April (Family Fun Day). Twitter tech, tips and transgressions from Stephanie Darkes. . .
W
elcome to the not-so-nerdy world of Stephanie Darkes, your no nonsense music & Social Media go-to-girl, here’s my March instalment: Goodbye Whitney / goodbye youthfulness: Around midnight on February 11th I was tucked up in bed with the husband snoring next to me and my iphone stuck to my hand (nosing around Twitter) when I read that Whitney Houston had died. At first I thought it was a hoax but it proved to be true. Between 12-2am her death started trending and I was reading tribute Tweets and sniffing back tears, reminiscing over my first ever slow dance with Paul Spurgeon at Lara Stanton’s party circa 1985. I remember vividly my pink leggings, baggy white shirt and pink hip belt combo and doing the clumsy 80’s sidestep to ‘Saving all my love’. I also remember relaxing so much that I dribbled on Paul’s shoulder (nothing like a bit of teenage embarrassment). Amidst the tributes and the sad tweets there were haters* who posted tweets like: ‘omg all these 12 yo girls cryin over Whitney, they didn’t know who she was yesterday’. For me, Whitney’s death highlighted the end of my youth, some say this ended years ago but I beg to differ. Following Whitney’s death a stream of celeb death hoaxes appeared on twitter including Keanu Reeves, Madonna & Chris Brown. *Haters “Overused word that people like to use just because someone else expresses a dislike for a certain individual” – Urban Dictionary.com The increase of Trolling & Cyber bullying: Trolling & Cyber-bullying are terms that are appearing again and again when speaking of online communities and social sites, our Bonsai Editor asked me to take a look at both and report back. Trolling: "In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of
otherwise disrupting normal discussion.” (Wikipedia). These are the people who lurk on message boards and Social Media sites getting their kicks by upsetting people. In real life they probably have few social skills, and / or a small penis and / or an overblown sense of self. Most of the time you can simply block / ignore or report these people. Some people see it as a challenge to take them on but my advice is don’t bother because you won’t get any intelligent comment / conversation out of them. Recent cases of trolling include Sean Duffy, sentenced to 18 weeks in prison last September after admitting two “trolling" charges. He had visited Facebook tribute pages and posted videos taunting dead victims and their families. Panorama made a programme called ‘Hunting the Internet Bullies’ that was aired on 6th February. The programme opened with Cher Lloyd (an X Factor competitor) speaking about her personal experiences: "I think I must get at least 10 tweets a day saying I'm a dirty pikey," she broke down on the programme saying that she is “very scared” and some days she just wants people to leave her alone. If someone as high profile as Ms Lloyd is suffering at the hands of trolls and bullies it raises concerns for our children. Before I started researching for this article I thought Trolling and cyber bullying were the same thing but after further investigation I discovered that they are different and the difference seems to stem from the length / duration of the abuse. It also seems that the cyber bullying victim more often than not knows the perpetrator. “Cyberbullying is the use of the Internet and related technologies to harm other people, in a deliberate, repeated, and hostile manner. As it has become more common in society, particularly among young people, legislation and awareness campaigns have arisen to combat it “ (Wikipedia). An example of cyberbullying that you might have stumbled across recently is the case featured on channel 4’s ‘my social network stalker’ where Ruth Jeffery was terrorised and humiliated by 16
her boyfriend, who posted naked pictures and videos of her all over the web and she had no idea it was him. Panorama claim that cyberbullying is on the rise and unearthed a startling statistic from charity Beatbullying that 28% of 11-16 year olds have experienced bullying or harassment online. Before Social Networking the bullying was left at the school gates, now with smartphones and the internet being essential in everyday socialising, our children are open to abuse 24/7 and often unable to prevent it. These stats come from www.vital.ac.uk who commissioned a survey of over 1300 teachers in January 2012. Here are some of the findings: 3% of teachers have personal experience of cyberbullying. 69% of teachers are aware of pupils who have been cyberbullied. Of those pupils, 81% had been bullied via social networking sites and 67% by text. The statistics are pretty shocking so please make sure you look after yourself, your friends and your young people. For more advice visit: www.stopcyberbullying.org, www.beatbullying.org. This month I liked: iphonography Got some spare time? A day out at ‘All About The Horse Day’ at beautiful Fontwell Racecourse. . .
Orses. We here at Deep are big fans of the things. They’re beautiful, with hairy chins, and they regularly lose us money in their job of running across fields with a little fella sat on them. We’ve watched them pass by in the paddock, one even tried to nick Mik’s beer once, but we’ve never actually got up close to one, or touched one - an experience, I imagine, common to most racegoers who only see them thundering past at 40-odd miles an hour on the other side of the rails. Huge kudos then, to Fontwell Racecourse and their ‘all about the horse day’ which gave ordinary punters the chance to get up very close and very personal to some of these magnificent beasts in between enjoying some quality jumps action at their fantastic course. A mere hour and a bit on a train direct from East Croydon sees you arrive at Barnham, where a bus takes you the mile or so to the small but immaculately maintained, and almost unique in its figure of eight chase track, course. Although it’s small, Fontwell is brilliantly appointed with a massive stand, plenty of bars and lots of trackside standing room. Behind is the parade ring and paddock, and a beautifully topiaried area which houses the palladian owners and trainers bar. Everyone is very friendly, there are plenty of bookies and a great atmosphere, but we’re really here to meet some horses, and we take the opportunity after backing a loser in the first to have a wander and find some. The horse we find is ‘Monsignor’, a Cheltenham winner and standing track record holder, looking very content eating a carrot, and the thing that first strikes is that he’s bloody MASSIVE! His head is bigger than the small child being lifted up to stroke it. Turns out he’s 17.1 hands high, which is just shy of 6 foot at his shoulder, which means if Mik, who’s six foot, was to stand in the stirrups he’d be about 12 feet off the ground. Oh, and he weighs over half a tonne, and he’s currently nuzzling my hand as I stroke his chin, and looking directly into my eyes. Magnificent. Round the corner are two more retired racehorses (all
here thanks to HEROS, the racehorse retraining and rehoming charity - www.heroscharity.org) of whom one is equally as friendly as Monsignor, but the other, ‘Renard’, has his arse resolutely turned to the public. We’re informed by his lovely handler that he’s ‘fed up with it now’ and so has decided to turn round and have a good old lick of the wall of the stable instead. We like Renard. Elsewhere on the day we found pony rides for the kiddies, ‘Topthorn’ the puppetry horse from ‘War Horse’, which really is astonishing, parading around the paddock with a real horse, and a tiny pony named ‘Cuddles’ somewhat ironically, we thought, as he seemed to have an anti-bite mask on and looked like he had the hump. To our eternal chagrin we failed to find the ‘horseciser’, a riding simulator that you could have a go on as I wanted a picture of Mik giving it a go, but as it turns out Mik was riding ‘Big Bucks’ last time out and made the cover of the Racing Post. Who knew? You’ll notice we’re glossing over the actual racing as our luck was out until the last race, where we managed to recoup some losses, but this day, for us, was less about the racing and more about a long overdue education into these fantastic animals that we watch every day, and a new found respect for the bravery of the jockeys who ride them. Seriously, if you get the chance, stroke a racehorse, they’re a huge, astonishing ball of muscle with the prettiest eyes ever, and a penchant for polo mints. If we had our way, every race fixture would have a Monsignor on hand for the punters to meet, but as that’s not the case, we can only say, thanks Fontwell and HEROS for a brilliant day out, some great racing, great hospitality, a fantastic atmosphere and, not least, the opportunity to stroke the hairy chin of a racing legend... Fontwell’s next fixture is their Spring Racing Day on 22nd March. More info and tickets from www.fontwellpark.co.uk 18

What’s On - Regular Every Day / Monthly Events: Every Day: • Museum: Dickens & London 9 Dec 2011 - 10 June 2012. Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens in the first major UK exhibition for over 40 years. Recreating the atmosphere of Victorian London through sound and projections, you'll be taken on a haunting journey to discover the city that inspired his writings. Paintings, photographs, costume and objects will illustrate themes that Dickens wove into his works, while rarely seen manuscripts including Bleak House and David Copperfield – written in the author’s own hand – will offer clues to his creative genius. During your visit you'll discover how Dickens' childhood experiences of London, working in a blacking factory whilehis father was locked away in a debtor's prison, were introduced into the stories he wrote. The great social questions of the 19th century, including wealth and poverty, prostitution, childhood mortality and philanthropy, will also be examined, all of which set the scene for Dickens' greatest works. Highlights of the exhibition will include an innovative audio-visual experience bringing to life the desk and chair where Dickens worked on his novels, and a specially commissioned film by one of the UK’s leading documentary filmmakers, William Raban, which will explore the similarities between London after dark today and the night time city described by Dickens over 150 years ago. The annual inter-pub pancake race, down Surrey Street, organised by Esther at The Green Dragon in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital. This year five teams donned silly hats and in some cases, silly underpants to represent the Dragon, the Bad Apple, the Spread Eagle, Reflex Bar and the Black Sheep Bar in the sprint, relay, three-legged and sack pancake races. Congratulations to the Reflex team who won the day after a frenetic tie-break sprint. Nice one everyone!
