deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • www.facebook.com/deeplondon • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...welcome to issue 94 and what is, in our small way, a literary special, shining a light on yet more talented people in sunny Croydon (and beyond), this time, those who put pen to paper rather than flange pedal to floor. Makes a change. To be honest, when we envisaged this issue it was a bit more, well, upbeat. As it is is we’ve got death, psychological problems and tragic war heroes. Happy November! Luckily, as an antidote we also have love, beauty and... conkers! Good album title that, ‘love, beauty, conkers’... But I digress... This month we’re inordinately pleased to welcome back to the pages of Deep our old friend Ashley Hames, as well as to welcome some new friends, all of whom have books out, hence the theme of the issue, do you see? At this point I generally run through the gist of the month’s articles (usually because I can’t think of anything else to write) but this month, in the way of a decent thriller, I’ll just let you make your way through it yourselves. Unfortunately, I still can’t think of anything else to write, so here’s some music...

That was supposed to be the music to Tony Hart’s Gallery, but I can’t read music so I have no idea if it actually was - can someone let me know? Anyway, as you can probably tell I’ve been up a while finishing the mag, am slightly delirious and am losing the will to live, so I’ll leave you all alone for this month and say goodbye. Have a safe and happy bonfire night, enjoy the nights drawing in (our advice, find a pub) and we’ll see you next month for our customary bumper Xmas / January double issue super-duper special. We may even throw a party. Who am I kidding, we NEVER get around to organising parties, which is a shame as next year sees our 100th issue, the mag’s 9th biirthday and my (insert flattering age here) - th birthday. Ah well, we’ll see what we can rustle up. That’s it, we hope you enjoy this issue, avanti, allons-y, cheers! Angela xxx

Friend of the mag Ashley Hames talks to us about his new book, dealing with a subject about as far away as you could possibly get from what he normally does. . .

R

egular readers will be well aware of Ashley Hames, star of tv shows such as ‘Sin Cities’, ‘Bull Run’, ‘Man’s Work’ and ‘Top Trumps’, intrepid (and sometimes insane) sex explorer, David Devant and his Spirit Wife fan and all round top-laugh bloke - this article, in fact, will be the third time he’s graced the pages of Deep-London (or Wired, as was) but, to be honest, the circumstances of this meeting couldn’t be any further from that screen persona. Just over 3 years ago, Ashley’s Dad was diagnosed with, and died from, liver cancer in the space of a week. That week is the subject of his new, and truly remarkable, book, Seven Days to Say I Love You, a hugely sensitively written, sometimes harrowing but ultimately hopeful story of a normal family thrown into complete turmoil and the way they deal with it. It really is an amazing book, actually, but there’s no point in me

it all fell flat and he said ‘I don’t really have a choice, I’ve got music in my head and I have to get it out’ and I felt the same about this. So I went back to it a couple of years ago - more things had happened so I wrote about those and again, didn’t do anything with it. I didn’t really fancy it being published - I was happy to give my mum a copy and my family but that was about it. And then I wrote more and more and it started to look and feel like a book, but I still had that self doubt about whether I wanted to make a commercial product out of the death of my father. “So no, definitely not cathartic. Even going back and editing it was hard. I don’t think my mum is going to enjoy the full book. I sent her a draft and left the bits out that she’d find upsetting, more the stuff about my lifestyle, but she’s very much supportive of me publishing it.

"It’s a bit of a switch from my filthy disgusting past, but I’ve done SEX and now I’ve done DEATH - I’ve covered the major issues of the day. Politics is next. . ." telling you that - over to Ashley who we caught up with, with, to be honest, no little trepidation, in his local in Clapham; Why did you decide to write the book? “I had no real desire to write about it at the time - my Dad was diagnosed on the Thursday and died the following Thursday, which was pretty fucked up. No symptoms, nothing, and then, suddenly, bang. It was a pretty stange time, to say the least, and then months later I actually woke up in the middle of the night and just started typing, and didn’t stop typing for a couple of weeks, by which stage I had a lot of material. It kind of felt nice to have written it, but I didn’t do anything with it.“ Was writing it a cathartic experience? “No, not really, I get asked that, but I actually found it really upsetting - a horrible experience, but sometimes you can’t not do something. It’s like you have no choice. I remember asking Mikey (the singer from David Devant and his Spirit Wife) what would he do if

“The same with my brother and sister. My sister especially doesn’t like to read about me being upset, but my sister was one of the people about whom my opinion changed a lot during that time. I don’t know quite what I thought of her before but she surprised me quite a lot. She started off in complete denial - she had like a clot in her brain pattern that wasn’t allowing her to register what was going on, even when it was completely obvious. I sat her down and said ‘you need to come on board with us, he’s literally going to die soon’. From that moment she was an absolute star, and has been since. I’d seen myself as tougher than her, but I think she’s tougher - she was a rock. “My brother missed out on most of it because he’s a farmer and just couldn’t get there. He made it for one evening. I think he would’ve been upset about that, and I think this book really is for him, to put him there. We all thought Dad had a bit longer. “It was still quite a difficult decision to 4

publish it, but I’ve put years of work into it and I want people to read it, and the reaction so far has been amazing, I think people can’t quite believe that I’ve done something like this that’s slightly more meaningful than what I did before..” It is a bit of a departure... “Yeah, It’s obviously a bit of a switch from my filthy disgusting past, but I kind of think, weirdly, it’s all wrapped up in the same thing. I haven’t messed around with documentaries about buildings or whatever, I’ve done SEX and now I’ve done DEATH! Ha ha - I’ve done the major issues of the day. Politics is next... There are certain things you want to chalk up in life, so I’m pretty happy about that... “It has been quite self analytical, but the book is basically, I suppose, a diary of those seven days, coupled with a lot of the aftermath of how I reacted to it how weird it was and how traumatic it was...” Did you get on with your Dad? “Yeah, very much so, I was a big big fan of my Dad. We had our issues like most sons but yeah. And the whole title is kind of wrapped up in the fact that like most middle-class boys I never said, you know, ‘oh Dad I love you’, which, when he was alive, was never an issue for me and it was always unsaid but understood. But when he was on his deathbed and I knew he was going to die pretty soon it became a big deal to me, and I’m not quite sure why, and I

wrote the Sin Cities book I went through it and took out all the big words that I wouldn’t normally use in speech. This one’s a bit different - slightly more poetic. And there are less jokes... “But it’s not airy-fairy, It’s honest. I did try to change it into the third person but it lost something, so I kept it as it is. I thought by me writing it, with my past, it’s not going to be accepted because I get boxed in as that nutcase who gets battered and ends up with a prostitute with something up his bottom. There may still be some difficulty in the literati accepting it, but I don’t know. I think there’s definitely something of value in it. I’ve had messages from people who think the book is quite impactful and I think it is.” Is that thought of people’s possible reaction the reason you’ve self published? “No, not really, but I’ve had issues with publishers before, and I thought I’ve put so much work into this, and it’s

The fact is that these days you can just publish - you don’t have to wait around, send e-mails off and wait for 9 months for any response, you can just go out and do it. It’s amazing. “There is a plan to bring it out in paperback. That’s what’s so great these days - So I can self-publish it on Kindle and hopefully in the future self publish it in paperback. It’s amazing really. So that’s the plan. “Also, when you publish online it’s like an immediate feedback, rather than just sending a book out there and not really knowing what people think. The comments I’ve had on facebook and other places have been fantastic. I didn’t write it as a self help book, but some of the comments are from people who the book has helped, who’ve gone through similar things, so that’s gratifying. “It’s quite nice because my Dad always wanted me to be a writer so in a way this is a nice sort of ‘hats off’ to my Dad...”

"With the Sin Cities book I went through it and took out all the big words. This one’s a bit different - slightly more poetic. And there are less jokes. . . "

obviously talk about that in the book, but it was an issue, and I know it was also an issue for my sister and that all comes out. I wrote a list of things I should say to him before he died, but he reacted very differently - he was very matter-of-fact about it, totally chilled out. He knew he had days to live but he was saying things like ‘can you put those books from the office in a box and take them to the second hand shop’ talking about weird things like that - absolutely nothing of any weight or significance. I thought that’s the time when you say ‘Son, when you have a kid...’ and all that but there was none of that stuff, it was all very matter-of-fact. He was just very calm, and we were all very flustered. “I think the difference was he knew there was nothing that could be done about it, whereas we were all desperate to help.” I don’t want to use the word ‘lucky’, but you know, rather than someone

going out and getting hit by a bus... “Absolutely, I was lucky enough to be given that opportunity to say goodbye and to say ‘I love you Dad’. I ran pretty close to fucking it up, but yeah, we were very lucky. It seems an odd word to use but we were.” Do you think that, given your past exploits, there will be resistance to the book, or do you think that, perversely, because of who you are, more people might pick it up who otherwise wouldn’t necessarily read a book like this, dealing with such a difficult subject? “I hope it’s going to do really well because it’s a subject that everyone touches on and thinks about. I hope that I’ve tackled a bit of a taboo, going back to the sex and death thing, it is a taboo and I think British people are awful about speaking about death, dying, ageing, and we all deny it and we’re all living with our head in the clouds. “I think I might get a bit of shit for the book - maybe everyone thinks that these are things that should be left unsaid but I don’t see why, why should we be silent about something so significant? “And I haven’t done it in a ‘literary’ way, I’ve done it in my usual nononsense style. I remember when I

so personal that I don’t want anyone else to fuck it up - I know what cover I want, I know what’s in the book, why would I need a publisher? All they’ll do is stick it in bookshops after another year of waiting. “The reaction so far has been incredible - I can’t believe it. I put a sample up free on Scribd and that’s had thousands of hits, and I self published it on Kindle, and that’s kind of another side to this story is what’s brilliant about all that stuff is the whole self publishing thing. “When I put it on Kindle I wasn’t 100% happy with the ‘product’, but putting it out there motivated me to sort it out and get it exactly right. Otherwise I would’ve sat on it for another year.

Dr Ross Davies on the tragic tale of a Croydon WWII War Poet

I

n the poet Drummond Allison, Croydon has special reason to commemorate Remembrance Day. Allison died in action in 1943, leaving behind one of the most stirring and defiant poems of Remembrance in the language, ‘Come, Let Us Pity Death’. Drummond died a hero’s death leading an attack on a stronglydefended German machine-gun nest on an Italian mountain–top. He bled to death while being stretchered down, but not before giving his CO a report enabling the Germans to be swiftly dislodged. He was just 22, and had been in the front line for just two weeks and a day. John Drummond Allison was an engaging, high-spirited young man who, according to the critic Anthony Thwaite, was ‘the most accomplished poet of his generation’. He grew up at ‘The Larches’, 15 Cullesden Road, Kenley. The Allisons’ boy was a reluctant yet dutiful soldier. His remembrance poem ‘Come, Let Us Pity Death’ is one of the earliest poems of consequence to be written during Hitler’s War. It is deeplyfelt, commemorating the death in action of Drummond’s elder brother Douglas, a newly-married RAF bomber pilot (‘Swerving the cannon-shell to smash the airman’). It was a week before Christmas, 1939. Throughout his own brief life, Drummond composed a number of passionate poems to and about a woman he never names, except once,

Who was Drummond’s mysterious muse? The answer fell into my lap as Remembrance Day 2011 approached. Pauline Amy Williams, ‘Poppy’ to family, friends and Drummond, was born in 1921 (the same year as he) to the Reverend Rupert Williams, Rector of Chaldon, and his wife Catherine. Poppy was a bubbly, hazel-eyed brunette who loved partygoing and sport. She made the Lacrosse First XI at Eothen, her school in Caterham. Poppy’s parents and Harry and Gertrude Allison went to each other’s parties and the families even holidayed together in Cornwall when Rupert became a locum there one summer. In 1935, when Drummond (and Poppy) were fourteen, he was sent off to a public school on the other side of London, Bishop’s Stortford College. In the school holidays, Drummond and pals organised ‘mammoth flic parties’ of twenty or more boys and girls who would descend upon the old Davis Theatre cinema in Croydon. Poppy was one of the group. Few seem to have noticed that Poppy and Drummond were also seeing each other. In the ‘Poppy Papers’ there’s an unpublished poem ‘Outside the Davis’ which Drummond dates ‘May-Day 1939’. It shows him savouring the 6

anticipated arrival of Poppy and Poppy alone…. ‘I…/… like a spy/Wait and pretend I wait not.’ In 1994 Stephen Benson published The Collected Poems of Drummond Allison. He threw a party for everybody he could find who had known Drummond and had helped with the book. Poppy isn’t in Stephen’s book (or mine*), and the party-loving lady was not at the party. Schoolfriends had lost touch, possibly because the family moved from the area in 1940. By late 1938, Drummond was in his last year at school, and sending Poppy manuscript verse and stories. He continued to do so after going up to Oxford, in the first month of the war (October 1939). In early 1942 Poppy’s admirer was called up, and the following year he was dead. It is clear to me on the evidence of the ‘Poppy Papers’ poems that Drummond loved Poppy almost to distraction. The charismatic local beauty did not seem put off by what Drummond, rendered self-conscious by her interest in him, saw as his physical shortcomings. At five feet four he was only an inch taller than she. If Poppy was appropriately curvy and Drummond short, he was also square-built and athletic. But it worried Drummond that he had a biggish head, moreover one topped by an unruly thatch of straw–coloured hair over black eyebrows. In fact, Drummond was

and that is in an unpublished clerihew that has just come my way: ‘God couldn’t possibly make a copy Of his best effort – i.e. Poppy. Her shape’s more perfect even than perfection (Which means she’s in and out in just the right direction).’ Poppy, however, does not appear in published poems such as ‘The FiveBarred Gate’, ‘Inconsequential Love Song for One Who is Far Way’. In ‘They Who Are Not and She Who Is’ Drummond, writes of the girls he has met since Poppy, and says of one after another ‘She is not the one’. He then explains his silence about the ‘the one who is the one’: ‘Indeed, as you say, it is very seldom That thus I speak (for she is perfect, Her face must not be swapped like a cigarette-card, Her name must not be taken in vain). And, nevertheless, she is the one, She is the one who has my heart But I doubt if she really believes it’.

attractive to women. He was chatty, amusing, had charm as well as intellect, and he delighted in female company. Did Drummond move Poppy as much as he she moved him? We do not know. They had so little time together. Had she been a poet we might have learned more. There were to be other women, yet Drummond seems never to have got over being separated from Poppy. Drummond rests in Italy. His muse served as an Army physiotherapist, and in India met an Army engineer, Roger Urwin. They married in 1948, and he later became Prebendary of Exeter Cathedral. Poppy went first, in 2005. Roger followed her last year. Cathy and Pauline Urwin remember their parents as a happy, devoted couple. Poppy, they say, always spoke fondly and openly of Drummond Allison and her ‘ Poppy Papers’. With both their parents gone, Cathy and Pauline decided that the ‘Poppy Papers’ ought to be added to the Drummond Allison archive. Knowing that I’d written a book about Drummond, Poppy’s daughters contacted me, and so was revealed the identity of Drummond Allison’s mysterious muse. *Dr Davies is the author of Drummond Allison: Come, Let Us Pity Death. Karen Gilbert guides us through her new book on making your own natural beauty products before trying to teach us how to make bath bombs. . .

T

he more hip (hip?!? What’s next, groovy? - Ed) among you may well know Karen Gilbert as the co-owner, with partner Ritchie, of Croydon’s premier alternative emporium, Time Bomb, but she is also a woman of hidden talents, being a qualified aromatherapist, perfume and beautyproduct scientist, make-up artist, former Neal’s Yard product-developer, natural beauty and perfumery teacher, erstwhile ‘excuse me madam, would you like to try this skincare’ lady in Harrods (‘But I wasn’t orange!”) and now, published author. Blimey. Her new book, ‘Natural Beauty’, part of an established range which she was approached by the publishers to write, sees her showing us, in simple steps, how to make high quality natural beauty products at a snip, and with the added bonus of having

different preservatives available, it’s just a case of picking the one that’s best for you. I’d just like it to be more transparent. I’d like everyone to know what’s in products, why the ingredients are there and choose whether to use them or not. I also think that once you know how easy it is, what’s in products and how much they actually cost to make then you can make a more informed choice as to what you buy.” The book is beautiful - how difficult are the products to make? “All of these products are really really easy to do yourself - the book is aimed at beginners. I’m doing some video tutorials for people who want to get more into the techy side - there wasn’t enough space in the book to put in a massive amount of technical detail, but you don’t need it if you’re just starting

“A lot of natural beauty is ‘mash a banana, slap it on your face’ but people want products that feel good and are luxurious. That’s what these are” total control over ingredients. I’m thinking that’s all my Christmas presents done right there... What’s the idea behind the book? “The basic idea is to show people how to make natural products but also to show that you don’t have to compromise to do so - I’ve always thought that a lot of the natural beauty books are really hippy-ish, you know, ‘mash a banana and slap it on your face’, and that’s fine, but people who are into skincare do want a moisturiser that feels nice, and is a bit luxurious, and that’s what I wanted to get across, that you don’t have to compromise to have natural products. And also not to be scared by chemicals - a lot of people in this, niche, if you like, green books or natural beauty making guides are on a bit of an eco soap-box and they’re really phobic about chemicals, so what I wanted to do with this is to provide a bit of a balanced view. There are some preservatives, for example, which are controversial, but if you’ve got a choice of having a preservative in a product or having it potentially contaminated, what would you choose? There are loads of

out. For most of the products in the book it’s simply a case of mixing the elements together - it’s definitely something you could do with the kids. Some of the products have chemicals, as we’ve mentioned, in so you’d have to be a bit careful with them, but others, like bath bombs, are so easy to make and I think it’d be something kids would enjoy doing”. Talking of kids, easy and bath bombs, the Deep Massive decided that it might be a good idea to try out some bathbomb making (with Karen’s huge assistance - thank you!) and she’s right, it’s dead easy, and a lot of fun. A couple of glasses of wine and you could have a rare old time. The moment you add the water is a bit daunting as if you add too much the mixture will start to fizz and go mad, but given the ingredients are so cheap you can get away with a couple of disasters. In fact, after a small initial outlay to get the equipment, these bath bombs work out at pennies each, a bit better, in these straightened times, than £1.99 for one in Lush (other overpriced beauty shops are available). We went a bit avant-garde with ours, using a ‘pina 8

colada’ scent and iron-oxide colour, which we were a bit concerned about as it stained our hands - we had visions of getting out of the bath bright red, but it was fine - the adition of edible dissolvable glitter was a touch of genius on Karen’s part and the only problem we found was that the things look so damned edible (we did actually have a small taste and the result was not nice). As anyone who’s ever seen me can probably tell, I’m not that into beauty products, but that’s mainly because I can’t afford them and resent paying lots of money for a tiny pot of goo. For £14.99 with this book, you can stop being a slave to the beauty industry, learn a bit more about what you actually put on your skin and have a bloody good time making stuff and giving your creative side a bit of a vent. And all for less than the cost of a Biba Lipgloss Ring - whatever that is. For anyone vaguely into natural beauty the book would make a great present, and for anyone else I know, prepare to receive a set of home-made bath bombs for Christmas. Sorted! The Natural Beauty book is available from Amazon and in Waterstones priced £14.99 Karen’s next teaching course is a Natural Perfumery Course on 28th January at Imperial College, South Kensington. Stephanie Fox wrote her first, dark, thriller aged 16. With her second about to come out, Deep catches up with her and asks; Are you a bit odd?

Ha ha! No, I dont think so - I get that a lot! I think because my own existence is, you know, a bit mundane, then maybe I try to write about things that I find interesting. I’ve always been interested in psychology, all my favourite films are thrillers. I don’t know why, I think it’s maybe just trying to understand something that’s so, in normality, un-understandable...” To be fair, Stephanie Fox does not look in the slightest bit odd, she’s bubbly and funny, and she looks like a 20 year old University Student who’s popped into the pub before going off to see a film, which is pretty much exactly what is happening, apart from the presence of me, a dictaphone and the small matter of her having written one well regarded psychological thriller already, with another about to be published... Have you always wanted to be an author? “I never really wanted to be an author but I’ve always written - even when I was really young I’d write little stories. I wrote Playtime during my GCSEs when I was 16, but I never actually thought it would get published. It was my Dad who sent it off. I thought they’d say no but they didn’t. They’re quite a small publisher so they were actually able to read it, whereas big ones don’t have time.” Did your GCSEs suffer? “No, I actually did surprisingly well, the book got confiscated a couple of times by the teachers because I was writing it during lessons, but it ended up well on both sides as I got a book and GCSEs!” Can you tell us what Playtime is about? The cover really is quite creepy... “It is! We’re changing the cover for the next edition as we think this one makes it look a bit more like a horror book when it’s actually a thriller. “It’s about a boy called Leo and he’s been arrested, but the story’s told through police statements from him and his friends and family, his entire life story, so you don’t find out what he actually did until quite near the end - you build up to it. I think in that way it helps you become attached to the character before you find out what he did.”. As well as being a cracking read, Playtime is written in a ‘cut up

techniques’ style, with pages in handwriting such as Leo’s diary, and facsimiles of police statements (stylistically, think William Burroughs / Kathy Acker) which not only makes it more interesting, even when just flicking through, but serves pretty well in bringing you closer to the characters; “I got really attached to Leo when I was writing the book - I have more of a spft-spot for him than for any other character. And a lot of people have liked it, luckily. The book’s also largely set in Croydon, as I’m from here, so there are quite a lot of references. Leo’s actually known as the Croydon Creep!” Your second book is about to come out - what’s it about? “It’s called Project Kate and it’s about a boy called Ryan who meets a girl called Kate and one day something in his head tells him to try to get as much control over her as he can, and as the story goes on there’s the question of whether you can control someone elses mind without losing a bit of your own. It comes out in November, but I’m not sure of the date...” As a full time Uni student now do you see yourself continuing to write, will it be your career? “I’ve had less time to write since I’ve started Uni, but I did start to write my third book. Stupidly I forgot to back it up and my laptop wiped it. I haven’t had the heart to go in and try to rewrite it all again, luckily I wasn’t that far in, but it’s still really annoying. “Being an author is still what I want to do. I don’t think I’d be able to live off it, unless I became really successful, but it’s always going to be something I do, even if it’s just a pastime. I think as a career choice if I can’t be an author I’d quite like to be a journalist...” Maybe a crime journalist? “Ha! Yeah, that would be interesting...” What’s the third book about? “I keep changing my mind - I’ve got quite a few different options - I always write a few openers and whichever one I like the best I go with. I’ll go through phases when I’m writing pretty much continuously all day then I’ll have a break for as long as a month when I’ve got a bit of a block, and then one day it’ll just come to me, and I’ll go back and 10

rewrite bits and just carry on from there.” Being still so young and having such success, what advice woud you give to other budding authors? “I’d say only write if you’re passionate about it because if you’re writing just for the sake of it you won’t be able to enjoy or give your all to it. I think with anything, like music, or acting and with writing you’ve got to be really passionate about it to do your best. Oh, and also, to always to back up your work!” Playtime is out now published by HandE - avalable at Amazon & www.whsmith.co.uk priced £6.38 ISBN: 978-1-906873-12-7

ell-O folks (yes, as I’m writing this I’m carving my Halloween pumpkin). The last time I put pen to paper, or should it be, fingers to keyboard, the weathermen were predicting snow by the end of October but what do they know? We’ve been basking in an incredibly late Indian summer and I for one have been making the most of it, culminating in an impromptu trip to Brighton to wander round the North Laine and sit and drink beer outside my favourite seaside haunt, the Fortune of War. Unfortunately, although most of southern England had the same idea, Southern Rail chose that day to cancel the majority of the trains and re-route the remaining ones willy nilly around Sussex so what should have been a pleasant 50 minute trip turned into twice that, standing sardine-like in a hot train patiently explaining to

inconceivably stupid foreigners that, no, not even one more person can squeeze in here, let alone the three buggies and seven adults you are accompanied by and, no, holding the buggies over your heads does not make a difference. However, we finally arrived in sunny Brighton and headed to the beach, along with the rest of the world, for a paddle and to marvel at what some people consider to be appropriate beachwear - I was ranting about check shirts a couple of months ago, but this epidemic seems to have spread to check underpants with no trousers! I was very nearly put off my sausage roll. And talking of rubbish and food, poor Edith has been nearly driven demented by the new rubbish collection rules. After reading the lengthy instruction manual that arrived (quite why Croydon Council

“Edith’s been driven demented by the new rubbish collection rules, losing sleep over whether it’s a blue or green week & where to put her tin foil. . .”

imagine I would put incontinence pads in with the food waste, I cannot fathom) she then spent several sleepless nights worrying about whether it was a green week or a blue week, and where to put her tin foil. I thought she’d finally lost it when I found her up a stepladder, completely shrouded in lime green velour, looking like an extra from Ghostbusters. Turns out she’s solved her sleeping dilemma with the simple plan of changing the colour of her bedroom curtains on a weekly basis from blue to green, thereby ensuring she knows which colour week it is as soon as she wakes up. Genius. And the tin foil? She’s given up trying to work out where this goes and has started constructing a life-size statue of the Silver Surfer on the patio. That’s recycling in style. As you probably realise by now, Edith and I are always up for a party so we were delighted to receive an invite to Bert’s 90th at the Pop-In. I

launch, Witchfest at the Fairfield Halls and Voodoo Six at the Borderline. And possibly some snow, if the weathermen have got their predictions right this time. See you under the bar...

volunteered to help blow up the balloons (my mouth organ teacher recommends this, amongst other things, for “air control”). In the event Bert had ordered a bottle of helium, although we wasted most of it doing what everybody does when left alone with a bottle of helium, so our balloons were rather droopy. I impressed Bert no end by turning up with Jensen Button and Lewis Hamilton - cardboard cut-outs actually - but most of the party guests were so ga-ga they happily chatted away to their heroes completely oblivious to my trickery. The only downer was when the bus home was held up for ages at East Croydon due to the Council blocking the road with the Christmas lights crane - when I’m queen I swear I’ll ban the ‘C’ word until the beginning of December [and that’s why we’ve included the picture to your right, just for you Auntie May, from us - Ed]. I always gauge the success of a party by what I wake up with - and this time it was an interesting pair of pumice-stone nipples although I can’t for the life of me remember why I was wearing them. Musically this month the highlight for me was Croydon’s answer to the Big 4 who packed out the Ship for the night: Junk Time Party (yes, Dave Sears got his organ out again), Snakebite (Edith had to be fanned a lot during their set as the lovely Jason got her all overheated), Tenyson (I’d forgotten how good they are) and 23 Enigma (they get better every time) - all in all the best night musically I’ve had in Croydon in ages. It quite took me back to the good old days when the Brief (RIP) had a music venue at the back. This month I’m looking forward to Mordecai’s album

Tragically, this item seems to be only available in America.

It’s the 2nd Annual Conker Championships at The Royal Standard mind your eyes!

o, as you may recall from last month’s editorial we were off to the Royal Standard’s Conker Championships at the beginning of October, where we were defending our 2nd round loss in last year’s inaugural event and I was predicting an even earlier exit due to a case of the sniffles. Well, you’ll be delighted, I’m sure, to hear that my prediction was entirely... correct. I went out in round one (although in my defence my conker was undone in something of a kamizaze attack and the one it lost to was duly dispatched in round two.

more eager contestants out (and the nice warm weather), so that at the start you couldn’t move in the garden for projectile nuts on strings fizzing past your ears. I’m sorry to say I didn’t catch the name of my first round opponent, although I did manage to catch him a right ding across an already broken and bandaged finger. If you’re going to make last minute adjustments... I also contemplated a steward’s enquiry as my concentration was momentarily shaken by the vision of a middle aged lady barrelling through the middle of our game yelling

“Meanwhile, on the other side of the garden, Woody was stealthily making his way through the opposition like some ‘inedible nut-like seed’ ninja” The conker equivalent of ‘I loosened the lid’...). But anyway, yes - this year’s event was scheduled to start a bit earlier than last year’s (and, in a bit of forward-thinking, not scheduled on the day after the Halloween Party...) although it did run a bit late, mainly so a chance could be given for last year’s defending champion, Sue Beresford, to arrive (she was otherwise engaged with some kids in a community project painting the subway into the Fairfield Halls Car Park (more on which next month, but it does look great)). But eventually, and after far more beers than I’d planned for, the conker-bloke arrived with a bag full of pre-strung virgin conkers, mostly collected from the Standard’s very own magnificent Horse-Chestnut tree. With our weapons selected, it was time to start, but not before a quick perusal of the rules. Rules?!? Indeed, this year we were playing ‘playground rules’ with added ‘stampsies!’, ‘strings!’ and ‘windmills!’ all of which added violence seemed to have encouraged

‘STAMPSIES!’ before crushing a hapless conker under her boot (a boot, I later discovered, chosen for just such an eventuality whereas I, not knowing the stampsies rule was going to be in force, was wearing a pair of Converse One-Stars with all the sole nut-squishing power of a pair of cardboard hotel slippers...) Meanwhile, the rest of the Deep Massive, i.e. Mik, was engaged in a match with Dave, who beat me last year, and after an epic battle, Mik triumphed and Deep had managed to get a 50% success rate through to the heady heights of round two. Now, this all happened a while ago and, as mentioned, we’d had a few, so I can’t exactly recall who played who when, all I know is that while Mik was busy conkering his way through all-comers, on the other side of the garden, David ‘Woody’ Wood was stealthily making his way through the opposition, like some ‘inedible nutlike seed of the horse chestnut’ ninja, mainly by breaking their strings off. And so it came to pass that the 14

final was to be contested by Woody and the Deep-Massive’s finest, Mik Tubb, and all the beer-garden tables were moved out to the edges to create a rather gladiatorial feel vanquished conkarees got pints and gathered with hushed tones, and the finalists entered the arena. Well, one of them did, Mik was a bit delayed as he had to phone his mum, but eventually all was ready and off we went. And off we went some more. And a bit more. And some more. In fact, it seemed we might be there some time, and were informed that the pub would stay open until there was a winner, which cheered everyone up. It was at this point that I decided to go and get a drink... There have been journalistic careers ended by someone missing a vital moment - popping to the loo during the Rumble in the Jungle, that sort of thing. I was alerted to my Jungle Rumble moment the second I stepped into the pub and heard the cheer. That’s Bloody Typical, I thought, but hung around to get my pint anyway. As it turned out, Mik had been defeated, by a string malfunction (it had broken - not that we’re bitter) and Woody was duly crowned the conker-king and given some rather natty prizes including an E.S.B rugby shirt. No cup, but there’s talk of that being rectified - a tiny cup just big enough for the winning conker - for next year’s event, which we will DEFINITELY be at, with reinforced strings, no sniffles, a sturdier pair of shoes, a sub-editor for the catching of vital conker action moments and a burning desire in our hearts to either win the thing, or for me, to get further than round two. We’ll see you there, if you think you’re brave enough... The Royal Standard, 1 Sheldon Street, Croydon.

Spies, Kevin Smith, sharks and Nazihunters! That’s what we’ve been occupying ourselves with this month. Enjoy... Tinker, Taylor, Solider, Spy This year sees the big screen adaption of the classic novel Tinker, Taylor, Solider, Spy, first brought to life in the 1970s television series. Now it was almost a given that this film would be a success, but one question lingered; Would its subtle storyline be able to stand next to modern spy films without either compromising its integrity or boring the audience? After years in semi-retirement, espionage agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) is recalled to duty - a Soviet mole has infiltrated the highest ranks of The Secret Intelligence Service. Smiley’s list of suspects is short and his mission simple; find the spy. For those not familiar with the book / series certain elements will be hard to digest and fans of the originals will find cracks, but these are surely few and far between. Tinker, Taylor, Solider, Spy superbly captures the gloomy atmosphere of the cold war period and Britain’s place within it: The slow-burning pace of this unwinding thriller only adding to this. The casting is simply phenomenal, with each actor’s talents held back only by the limits of their roles. It’s an intelligent and welcome relief from the usual action-paced world of modern spy cinema.

Red State This is a huge change of pace for director Kevin Smith; One might expect the Clerks creator to deliver a tongue-in-cheek, low-brow ‘Jay and Silent Bob kill stuff’ style horror movie, however Smith has played down his usual auteur persona to present a sinister portrayal of religious extremism. Raised a Catholic himself, Smith clearly felt the need to voice the often muted opposition of liberal Christians against fundamentalist groups. After meeting a woman for sex, three teenagers find themselves imprisoned by an anti-gay family cult. It emerges that the family lure and murder sexually promiscuous individuals as punishment from God, furthermore when the ATF gets involved, all hell breaks loose. Red State is morally dark and disturbing with Michael Parks standing out for his creepy yet chipper portrayal of the family’s patriarch Abin Cooper. Abin’s long, drawn out sermon, which pulls you into the twisted psychology of his cause, is particularly haunting. What perhaps makes Red State unique is its general nihilism towards ethics. It would be easy to simply have a pop at Christian Fundamentalists but the introduction of the ATF and their own destructive self-righteousness highlight that fanatical views are not reserved for the religious, but an underlying human flaw.

Shark Night 3D Now, I really like my rubbish movies, but even I get bored sometimes. This film was a wasted opportunity. It had all the trappings of being a cult classic, but instead sank with a thud. Then again this was brought to us by the producers of Hostel and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake so an over-reliance on tired shock tactics should have been expected. A group of college kids head out to a lake for some summer fun on it’s secluded island but - oh no! - there are sharks in the lake! What diabolic explanation can explain their presence and how can our protagonists escape alive?! This film could have been intentionally trashy, such as Piranha 3D, and capitalised on its absurdity, but by attempting to be more credible, it crucially lacks a sense of humour, with boring and embarrassing consequences. If only the film had some suspense you could at least enjoy the shark attacks. Instead it merely relies on the presence of sharks to entice fear. Furthermore its overuse of stereotypes just ends up being insulting rather than ironic. Despite high hopes, sadly it seems very little love or effort went into the making of this film.

The Debt What is the value of truth? Should history ever be rewritten and how long can the weight of a noble lie be burdened? These are the questions that are at the heart of The Debt , a post-war cat and mouse spy thriller, as it charts its way back and forth through the lives of its heroes. In 1966, Mossad agents Rachel, Stephen and David are sent to Soviet controlled East Berlin assigned with capturing a Nazi war criminal but when the mission is compromised, the truth is covered up. Held as heroes decades later however, the haunting events of that period demand confrontation. The action sequences sit oddly in this drama, feeling forced and only there to give the film wider appeal. Another crisis may potentially have occurred in linking up the various characters and eras. Fortunately all actors involved carried out their tasks superbly, in particular both Helen Mirren and Jessica Chastain, who jointly play Rachel, successfully capture their characters ongoing repressed fears and stoicism. Furthermore The Debt has a healthy mixture of intelligence and excitement which carries the film along nicely. The various dilemmas raised by The Debt mean this tense spy drama will keep you hooked and intrigued.
