September 2011 Issue Ninety Two
deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • www.facebook.com/deeplondon • twitter @deep_london Hello there.. ...and welcome to issue 92. Well, where to start? Facts first I suppose Deep didn’t come out last month simply because we’d written it before the riots, and it was due to come just after it had all kicked off. The contents therefore seemed entirely inappropriate, so we abandoned it until this issue. We hope you understand. To be honest, this issue has been one of the most difficult we’ve ever written, in terms of tone if nothing else. We were going to do a piece on the actual riots, but we chose not to for two reasons; 1) No-one still seems entirely sure of what happened when, so it’d be a lot of conjecture, and we’re not a tabloid, and 2) we’ve been busting our arses shining a light on the positive side of living in Croydon for over eight years now - it’s a hell of a lot more difficult than slagging the place off - but that’s what we do, we believe in it, we’re quite good at it, and we refuse to let a few hundred mindless, amoral, grasping little scrotes change that. At this juncture, I would just like to point anyone who still thinks that the riots in Croydon were caused by anything other than a bunch of mindless, amoral, grasping little scrotes in the direction of the little tv repair shop in Cherry Orchard Road. It’s been there, independent and independently run, tiny and wonderful, for donkey’s years. They were completely cleaned out, so now the owners are having to buy replacement tvs, with their own money, for people whose own tellys were in the shop awaiting repair (looters - happy with your non-functioning tvs are you? Idiots). I’m not sure you can call that in any way smashing the system... Incidentally, in my very humble opinion, anyone who actually asks for a replacement should be ashamed of themselves - would you go and demand a telly from someone whose livelihood had been destroyed? No, you wouldn’t. And while we’re here, if you are thinking of buying a telly in the near future, can we suggest you go down there and give them your custom. Cheers. So anyway, yes, we’re going to continue to do what we do, highlighting the wealth of talented, creative, generous, community-spirited, as it says on the window of the Dragon ‘fantastic weirdos’ who live, work and play in sunny Croydon. So there. And thusly, in that vein, this month’s mag is a veritable plethora of positivity (even more so than usual), with articles focusing on people and things that make us feel a warm glow inside, and that’s even before we’ve had a drink. And finally, as Deep readers, we’re going to assume you’re like us, already digging the ‘yay - Croydon!’ vibe we’ve been emitting for the past eight years, (I don’t know why I went a bit 70s there) and while we’re immensely heartened to see everyone else getting with it, it’s a shame it took the aforementioned scrotes to do it. Still, we sincerely hope it continues. As will we. Until next month then, be like us, f*** the riots, love the Cronx... Avanti, allons-y, cheers! Petal Dunwoody catches up with Boot-Led Zeppelin drummer, Croydon All-Stars Charity Gig organiser & all round superstar Mat Martin to talk riots, recovery and rock’n’roll. . .
H
aving been in bands most of my life, and knowing how difficult it is to get 5 musicians to agree to be in one place in one time, it’s a measure of how apalled everyone was by the riots, how much everyone wants to do something to help and what high regard Mat himself is held in that not only has he managed to organise over 30 musicians, plus helpers, sponsors and a host of other folk to be in one place at one time, but he’s managed to do it all in a fantastically short amount of time. The Croydon All Stars Charity gig was conceived about 3 weeks ago, and it happens on the 18th September, all to raise money for those affected by the riots through the Mayor of Croydon’s ‘Recovery’ charity. So, without sounding too obvious, what made you want to put the gig on? “I was looking at the news footage when it was all going off and seeing Rockbottom get looted. I worked there years ago, know the owner really well
Obviously the event is to raise money but what else do you hope will come out of it? “I think just from the programme itself there are a lot of diverse bands that might not have ever played together before, and they’re all quite notorious Croydon bands in their own right. We have such a good lively music scene here. “The fact is £12 is pretty cheap to see a bill like that and I think it’s more important for people to come and see that and feel like they’re being involved with something whilst being entertained rather than just having to dip in their money to put a tenner in a box. It’s a big collection of diverse music lovers coming together and enjoying a day together - that’s the main purpose, to sort of lift the spirits a bit. “Even if you’re not from Croydon for example, the keyboard player in my band used to live in one of the buildings that was burned down so he was
"I thought it’d be nice if something that I know Croydon does really well - which is a healthy live music scene - could come together and raise money. . ." and know Colin the drum teacher there, they were such sad images, and then after seeing other people setting up things - not particularly to raise money but awareness pages, I thought it’d be nice to actually do something to raise money. “After hearing some of the stories of people trying to escape burning buildings and looters and rioters and whatever throwing stuff at them, I thought actually, yeah, people have lost homes in this as well as businesses and it’d be nice if something which I know Croydon does really well - which is a healthy live music scene - could come together and raise money for it. ”I was walking around Croydon the other day and even though they’ve done a great patch-up job you go and look around and you actually realise the damage that’s been done is ridiculous. You have to see it for yourself to realise that you want to put your hand in your pockets and try to help out.”
straight up for it, and he now lives in Brighton so he’s disconnected from Croydon - I think there’s a lot of people who used to live here and have connections to here that have looked at it and thought ‘if there’s something that I can get involved with and be supportive of...’ “It would’ve been nice if there was a bigger venue that we could’ve used closer to the centre of Croydon that could’ve catered for the amount of people we’re hopefully going to get, but that can’t be helped. If we’d have had a few months prep and had maybe got the Fairfield Halls then we could’ve fitted more bands in, but by that time we’d have lost the immediacy of what happened. The venue we’ve got is great, it’s got a good bar, they’re lovely people, and they’re really behind us, so it’s hopefully going to be a really good day.” How long did it take to fill the bill? “It took about 20 minutes. I wanted 4
us (Boot Led Zeppelin) to headline because we don’t do a lot of charity stuff and we also don’t do a lot in Croydon, so it was kind of a spurring on to do something where I live as well as support a good cause. No one in the band said no, they all gave me their diaries and then it was a case of finding a venue that was free. “As soon as we’d got that sorted and set the date everyone else we asked was straight in - Al (Banned Sauce) said yes immediately, Geoff (DJ) was straight up for it, ‘whenever wherever’, Ritchie (Kitty Hudson) was straight back to me he was the first person to post on the facebook wall saying it was going to be fucking awesome! Dave (23 Enigma) was brilliant and they were straight on board, as was Barry (Miss Nic). “Junk Time Party said yes straight away, then found that their drummer was away, but they’ve found a substitute (who is actually Ricky the drummer’s son, Ricky Jr - Ed) so that they can still do it. That tells I think of how much people want to do it. The response has been fantastic. And even apart from the bands, everyone I work with is volunteering to help out on the day. “Basically to sum it up, everyone that I’ve asked to be involved hasn’t even thought about it before getting on board - everyone’s seen it as a positive thing to do, the companies that have got involved to sponsor it by giving us what we need to put the event on have been brilliant and I’m just hoping that it’s going to be a really really special day that people will remember for a long time and they take a positive message from it. I hope more than anything else that the people taking part really enjoy it as well because no-one’s getting paid, everyone involved is giving up their time and their effort to put on something special, everyone just wants to be involved in something positive to raise money for a really good cause, and every single penny that’s made from it is going towards the charity.” Croydon All Stars Charity Gig in aid of ‘Croydon’s Recovery’, Sunday 18th September 2011 at Croydon Sports Arena. £12 in - a bargain! here’s been a lot of talk recently about ‘community spirit’, like it’s a new thing. Unfortunately, some of those same people who think it’s a new thing seem to be using it to gain themselves some sort of credibility, which, in our book, means they just aint got it. Luckily there are thousands of people out there (and we humbly include ourselves in this category) who’ve not only got it but who’ve had it for a considerable amount of time. Groups, individuals, clubs and associations, businesses, pubs and their punters and many many more who go about their work, quietly and with no little amount of dignity, raising funds for good causes, volunteering, just generally helping out and in the main having fun, meeting new friends and fostering further spirit into the bargain. One such group is the ‘Friends Of Haling Grove’, who’ve been doing exactly that since 2009 and don’t intend to stop any time soon. For those not acquainted, Haling Grove is a park in South Croydon. In fact, it’s the park nearest to where I grew up, where I nearly killed myself on the ‘Witches Hat’ in the playground, where Butch the dog got off his leash and properly buggered off through people’s gardens for about six hours, where we used to play football before going to the pub on a Sunday and, on one memorable occasion, a freezing Boxing Day morning. So far so parky, I hear you say, but this one is a bit special. Originally part of the Haling Grove Estate, it was owned by horse-breeder Mr Sydney Shorter, who was regularly seen exercising his horses on the grove,. The whole place was bequeathed to Croydon by his widow on the condition that it remain a park. The actual estate house is long gone and the grass has extended over its site, but bits of it remain in the shape of a ha ha (I had to look this up - it’s a trench designed to keep grazing livestock off the ornamental gardens), it’s kitchen garden, which is now a
rose walk and, the really special bit, a walled garden with fish-filled ornamental pond. This walled garden, unfortunately, isn’t open all of the time as one of its conditions of opening is a need to have someone supervising (because of the water, you see - someone might fall in) and this is what the Friends of Haling Grove do, give up their time to be there when they can, to look after the park, maintaining it in association with Croydon Parks, making sure no scrotes ruin it for everyone else, raise funds for playground equipment (the playground is fab) and other needed stuff, look after the shelter and the flowers, generally do good deeds and ‘encourage more people to use the park facilities and enjoy its beautiful setting’. They’re made up of local residents and other caring types, and rather than being the staid group you may have expected, they’re all about the fun down there in South Croydon. When we were there, it was for the grand opening of their latest initiative, a Community Orchard, lots of nascent trees near the back of the walled garden, which was heralded by a three piece jazz band playing all day in the park shelter and an invitation to all to bring picnics and BBQs, drinks and nibbles. The sun shone (mainly), kids were running about, the people 6
mingled and ate and drank and were merry, and the local characters were out in force. After some rousing speeches and the ribbon-cutting ceremony the orchard was officially declared open on 28th August 2011, after which there was more eating and drinking, more excellent jazz and some dancing in front of the shelter as the sun went down. This was the first event we’d been to in the park, but it won’t be our last as they hold loads of events up there. In the recent past they’ve had dogshows, big lunches, easter-egg hunts, mulled wine and mince pies for St Nicholas’ Day, impromptu BBQs and halloween parties. In fact, the next event is another halloween do on 30th October and as usual, all are welcome to come down, have some fun, meet some new people and get into this new-fangled thing of communtity spirit. We’ll see you there! Haling Grove Park, St Augustine’s Avenue, Croydon, CR2 6DQ. Petal Dunwoody’s rough guide to the global GPS treasure hunt that is ‘Geocaching’
H
ave you ever found a bit of cash on the street or some nifty doodad on the floor that gets forgotten in a drawer? Or done a bit of freganism down the market at closing time (such a good idea at the time until the kitchen gets full of tiny flies)? All this stuff dropped, discarded and otherwise misplaced is all random is it not? Well, it appears some not at all. Last month we signed up to, and had our first foray into, the world of Geocaching. Geocaching is a treasure hunt type game on a global scale. People leave waterproof containers anywhere that they find interesting or significant. They will put a paper log in there, which is filled in by the finders, and sometimes items to trade or swap. The 'Cacher' will then record the item's co-ordinates on a listing website: (this is the one we used www.geocaching.com) and put up a
watching the roadworks, club based Carolina hardcore ecstasy on Tuesday early afternoon or gigs on snow day where fans were unable to get to the door to extend their enthusiasm. There is an awful lot of utter crap both on and supported by the internet but here we have something, apparently trivial, which tends to make me feel slightly gladder to be a human in this age. You know us at Deep Towers, drinking and having a laugh around town is a bit of a priority. However, as beer gets ever nearer to £4 a pint, 20 fags to £8 and soon saying boo to a goose will be punishable by death (except of course if you own a newspaper or if you are a goose) geocache offers an alternative entertainment. It's generally free (the geocache iphone app does cost money, but you don’t technically need it, we just
“I’ve always loved these ‘aside’ activities - things that elude the notice of the workaday world and make me feel slightly gladder to be a human. . .” description of the cache where they’ll tell you why they’ve put one there, so you might just learn something about your immediate environs into the bargain, and, given that they’re in the main dropped by locals, you may even be guided to somewhere you’ve never been before right on your doorstep. Once you have found an item you will update the online details with when you found it and make any comments e.g. the paper log in the container is full, or just thanking the hider for an interesting cache. This is one of those special activities that eludes the notice of the workaday world to such an extent that there have been various caches around all over the world, including Antarctica (and in space - there’s one on the International Space Station apparently), for the last 10 years without anyone I know having a clue. On the website there is a nifty map that shows where the caches are near to your postcode. if you zoom out a bit you’ll see the whole of north western Europe is covered with caches. I've always loved these 'aside' activities: not being at school and 8
found it helpful as we’re beginners) and, not wishing to sound nerdish, engages you with your environment (geocachers tend to pick up litter at sites and have generally accepted rules to minimise
their impact on nature, to respect private property, and to avoid public alarm). Also, it offers benign communication with people from all over the world who are happy to simply be somewhere and acknowledge that fact. I could wax on about exploding stars but I shan't. Do go and visit your local cache(s), have a look around you, perhaps hold your chin and go 'mmmmmmmmmmmmmm'. This is precisely what we did, looking around, smack bang in the centre of Croydon, attracting stares from the pub opposite’s clientele, for about 30 minutes until we found the little prize of our first geocache. Well worth the effort. We found the easiest to use website is the ‘official’ one at: www.geocaching.com, which has a good introduction section and highlights caches suitable for beginners. Oh, and don’t let some of the smug terms used by (very few) participants put you off we didn’t, and we’re looking forward next weekend to a couple of days of walking in places we wouldn’t normally go, taking in the surroundings (and hopefully the sunshine) and looking for things we didn’t, until a couple of weeks ago, even know existed... Every dot on this map is a cache placed by someone, for a reason, that you can both go and find, and find out why.

It’s a new arts & crafts market at The Oval Tavern. See what we did there..?
O
ne of the things, we’ve found over the years, that Croydon seems to have a wealth of is people who get off their backsides and DO STUFF. A case in point is was proved on Sunday 4th September by one Tina Crawford when she launched the ‘Concrete Market’ a new arts and crafts fair being held at The Oval Tavern in East Croydon. Actually, the same could be said of Graham and the gang at The Oval for being forward-thinking about the use of their pub, so kudos all round! The actual fair was the first of what Tina hopes will be many such events to bring like-minded craft businesses together to promote quality, creative products, and she had already enlisted many interesting crafts-people to showcase their wares (see below) on stalls, as well as some vintage makeover artists to spruce up willing punters on the day. As well as organising the market, Tina has a long history of arts and crafts work herself, training at Central St Martins before going on to jewellery design & textile decoration with television production sandwiched in between. Her first role was working on a children's art programme creating the 'makes', but her career ended 10 years later due to chronic illness. Rather than being confined to the sofa Tina took to the sewing machine re-teaching herself old skills and started to make Twinkle handbags which adorned the shoulders of presenters such as Donna Air, Lisa
Rogers and Jools Oliver. Just as Twinkle looked to be getting off the ground, Tina’s condition worsened and she had to give it up. Since then, Tina has started a new venture, named after her son Toby, called Tobyboo, whose freehand machine embroidered products will be at the market. See what we mean about getting off backsides and doing stuff? So far so fabulous, but it does seem a slightly odd juxtaposition of idea and venue, so why the concrete market and why The Oval? Tina explains; “I wanted there to be regular events to showcase the vast variety of craft talent in a really informal environment. “We’ll take things one stitch at a time but I intend to run these events regularly. It’s great to have this amazing variety of talent under one roof. This isn't just a fair for local people this is a darn good market for all to venture to for quality craft. “I've been thinking about starting up something like this in Croydon for a year now and had seen other places but they never felt right. Sometimes what you're looking for is right in front of you. I wanted another outlet to sell my bespoke creations from and knew there would be like-minded people wanting to do the same. “I’m getting more and more excited and slightly worried about how much I will be spending on the day because of all the fantastic makers on board.” We popped along to the first Concrete Market and, as someone else who was in there, who didn’t know it was going on and had just popped in for a pint said ‘I thought I’d walked into the wrong pub’. The Oval was unrecognisable, absolutely crammed full of knick-knacks, doodads and bits and pieces. Entry was free, the BBQ was in full swing, the bar was open and there was a healthy number of punters poring over the crafts on 10
display. The rain was annoying, but happily it was only a couple of showers and didn’t seem to have dampened anyone’s spirits. All the stall holders, and indeed the punters, were enthusiastic about this new venture, very friendly and, I think, having a relatively successful day given it was the first one. We bumped into Tina the next day at, bizarrely, Legoland, and she hopes to hold another concrete market soon, but she’s not sure when yet (the latest possible date we’ve had is 26th November). We’ll keep you informed, or you can keep up to date at www.concretemarket.blogspot.com In the meantime, if you’ve seen something you fancy in our photos, or if you’re a prospective stallholder and want to check out what sort of thing everyone else is doing, you can find most of the stallholders online at the addresses below. the-aviary.co.uk www.etsy.com/shop/BuntingandBeads www.notonthehighstreet.com/claudette worters www.etsy.com/shop/CupOfSea Facebook - Charming-Grace-Jewellery dearsweetagatha.blogspot.com www.folksy.com/shops/DiDoesVintage emilythepemilys.blogspot.com fabricnationadventures.blogspot.com www.handmadeandvintage.co.uk/ jennycairns.com www.folksy.com/shops/ LemonadeAndLamingtons www.munazuberi.co.uk/ tobybooillustrated.weebly.com/ handinhandgallery.co.uk Keep up to date with future concrete market events at www.concretemarket.blogspot.com

Another month, another fantastic Stand! event and, this month, another new Deep writer who, because he’s yet to furnish me with his preferred nom de plume (one day someone will write for us under their own name), we’ll simply call ‘The Shadow’. Ooh, mysterious!
S
tanding room only @ STAND, here in The Arnhem Gallery, well apart from the 25 chairs/stools dotted around, (I know ‘cos I counted them) but these were already taken by the time I arrived, mainly by middle aged women accompanied by compliant husbands who were dispatched to the bar every so often to purchase the required G and T, not much Sambuca being sold tonight. Brixton Academy it ain’t but why was I here? Let me explain! I couldn’t believe it, I’d finally got the call, 13:52 GMT (ok, text, as this is 2011), my writing career was about to take off. What was the assignment, a superstar performing at the 02, the Fringe Festival
actually been listening to the support, SAM HARE and his band for the last 45 minutes. The real JAMES HUNTER stood centre stage, totally in charge of his Gibson guitar looking resplendent in a tonic blue suit, and, from were I was standing, bearing a slight resemblence to both Billy Joel and Michael Keaton. Either side were the 5 other members of the band, 2 on sax, a cravat wearing upright bassist, keyboard player and drummer. (The keyboard player is apparantly the man behind the music for Rastamouse and set for big things, does it get any bigger than Rastamouse?). Straight away James Hunter launched into some lively banter
“James Hunter was tearing it up with a song called ‘Riot’, the second riot I’d experienced in a week, minus the looters, arsonists and Boris the Mayor.” in Edinburgh, the preview of the Big Brother contestants going into the house? Nothing quite so glamorous, but there were 2 tickets with the words “PRESS TICKETS” on them waiting for me at the front desk. Our bonsai editor finally realised that being in all places at once wasn’t gonna happen tonight, not unless she got some time and space wormhole jiggery pokery manipulation shit going on. “James Hunter” was midway through a song, so I propped up the bar, myself and my plus one, and surveyed the 150 or so crowd, nodding appreciatively to his melodic guitar playing. “Nothing too offensive’ i thought, sounds like a mix of Paul Weller and Van Morrison. The next track was “Home Grown Man” which was one i really got into, especially the sounds coming out of the keyboard, lots of sliding up and down the keys. “One More Chance” was another that rolled into my eardrums rather pleasantly. “Well thanks for coming early” said the front man, “this is the last one from us”. “HANG ON!”, I thought, “something’s not right here” The band played out with “Don’t Bring Me Down” a much livelier number but pretty much in the same vein as the previous tunes. Frantic to-ing and fro-ing ensued, the sound engineer didn’t know, the bar staff didn’t know, the guy in the shiny gold paisley shirt, cowboy boots and stetson probably knew but i didn’t ask him. Eventually i found out, I’d
with his loyal followers and then into some even livelier big band sound music. This Grammy nominated artist, after giving us a little taster of R&B, moved into a slower, reggae/ska style before tearing it up again with a number called “Riot” which reminded me of Yeh Yeh by Matt Bianco, the 2nd riot I’d experienced in a week, minus the looters, arsonists and Boris the Mayor. A James Brown sounding number, remeniscent of “Please” coupled with the playing of the keyboard maestro had the sax players engaged in some choreographed hand waving and the audience jiving around. The crowd had swelled to around 250 by now and Mr Hunter was in full swing. “What d’you wanna hear?” he asked the gatherers. As one the hands flew up and the unanimous choice was “Carina”, “Bollocks” he sighed, jokingly of course. Once more a subtle reggae vibe filled the hall. It was 10.15 now and the entire front of the stage was boppin’ jiving and shuffling to the sound of “Concrete Love”, an intense, big band, foot shuffling tune which spread the movement of the people throughout the room, old school lovers were jiving at the bar and bloody good at it they were too. 12
“What’s Going On” was his ‘pretend’ last tune before the entire band left the stage for what was about 15 seconds. Back they came, the Big band Sound belted out from the speakers and Mr Hunter finished in fine voice with the added bonus of some James Brown-esqe moving-and-a-shaking. As the auditorium emptied, little did everyone know, Graham, (the old guv’nor from the Oval) was dj-ing afterwards to wind down with an eclectic mix of vinyl music. “STAND”, check it out. In what seems to be something of a running theme this month, here are yet more people who’ve got off their backsides and done stuff...
here is possibly only one thing sadder than an shutdown pub and that’s a well loved pub that suddenly becomes a chrome plated wine bar (The Cool Rooms, anyone? Or that brief dark (I say dark, it was so bright shades were required) period The Ship went through? *Shudders*). Actually, in light of recent events, seeing a pub that’s been set on fire is sad too, but, in a small mercies kind of way, at least The Eagle was actually empty at the time. But I digress - It’s nice, therefore, when - in a bit of happy serendipity - an old empty pub is re-opened by people who frequented its previous incarnation. We’ve all thought about it, talked about it, usually when we’ve had a few - we should re-open that pub / buy a pub / club / venue / insert drunken idea here the difference between most of the rest of us and Claire and Simon, new owners of The Odd Shoe (more on that later) is that they’ve actually gone and done it. And yes, it apparently was a direct result of a drunken conversation. The Odd Shoe, in case you haven’t come across it yet, stands
on the site of the old Rat and Parrott (or, for those of you of a certain age, the old The Croydon (MKII)) on the corner of Park Street and St George’s Walk, architectually not the prettiest of areas, but the pub is nice - they’ve kept the fantastic pullback doors which gives it an airy feel in any hot weather we may or not experience again before autumn sets in. Inside too it’s airy open plan, with plenty of seats and a new pool table. They haven’t got a kitchen at the moment - from what we can gather the last incumbents (anyone remember Windy City?) took it with them when they went, removing half the back wall in the process, so there’s no food available, but, in a bit of forward thinking similar to that of the Half and Half, people are encouraged to bring their lunnch in, and have a sit down and a pint. Claire explains that the idea came from when she used to be an office worker, not wanting to sit at her desk eating her sandwiches, and not being able to find anywhere nice to sit outside the office. being particularly reasonable, and an ever-growing roster of events and dos. They’ve been open for a couple of months now, and are slowly increasing in both regular clientele and experience. Of course there have been teething troubles, a couple of blocked toilets on opening night, the staff having to guard the bar all night in case of rioters, you know, the usual, but the great thing is that they’re new, they’re totally independent, they’re keen and enthusiastic, they’re open to ideas and they were, until very recently, pub punters. And why ‘The Odd Shoe’? Apparently it comes from shortly after the conversation about buying the pub when Claire had an unfortunate hungover couture incident and turned up to work wearing alarmingly mismatched shoes. Now, do these or do these not sound like people after our own heart? Exactly, reward them with your custom! The Odd Shoe, 24 Park Street, Croydon.

Septuagenarian agony aunt cum rock mutton Auntie May quite sensibly gets the hell out of Dodge. . .
A
couple of weeks ago, Edith and I were delighted to be invited to Portofino to celebrate the birthday of one of our oldest friends. "How generous!" we thought, and commenced packing for a trip to a picturesque coastal town in Italy famed for its watersports and pastel-coloured houses. Edith had thoroughly waxed her trusty wakeboard although we remembered she had left the shallow fin in Lyme Regis so we had to quickly ebay for another. My new Thruster board arrived from Surfed Out along with an extensive selection of boardshorts and rash vests. By the time
poorly executed painting of the real Portofino on the wall by the till. Edith and I studied the buff menu. Starters were all over £7 and we only had a pocket full of Lira (Edith steadfastly refuses to deal in any way with the fiasco that is the Euro). We settled for a bottle of house rosé and got stuck in. By the time our main courses arrived we were at the tiddly stage and I felt moved to tackle Luigi (marginally less repulsive after half a bottle of rosé) about the pitiful quantity of "rosti" (very small potato squares) on my plate. He scowled a lot but produced a tablespoon more. At some
“We set about attempting to re-enact the potato basketball match of 1991 by lobbing Edith’s new potatos into the uplighters. . .” we'd assembled everything, cancelled the fruit and veg man, fathomed out the automatic timer for the lava lamp (it's best to look as if you're at home, I always say), we looked (and felt) as if we'd packed for a six month hiking trip to the Antipodes. We took a taxi to "just off the M23” as instructed where we were met by the Birthday Boy who looked rather perplexed at the huge amount of luggage assembled around us. Having loaded it precariously onto his roof rack we climbed into his car and off we went. Halfway down the A264 we realised were going in the opposite direction to Gatwick and a few minutes later we pulled up in front of "Portofino", a nondescript looking Italian eating establishment in East Grinstead. Well can you imagine our disappointment? Still, we thought, there are bound to be some exquisite Italian waiters to soften the blow. We were met at the door by Luigi (not exquisite at all - in fact he walked like a Thunderbirds puppet) who looked askance at our pile of luggage, and seated us in the far corner. The closest to pastel coloured anything was a buff coloured menu although there was a
stage I must have ordered another bottle of wine but there wasn't a lot to soak it up with so, as you can imagine, mischief-making rose to the top of the menu. We set about attempting to reenact the potato basketball match of 1991 by lobbing most of Edith's new potatoes into the uplighters. Edith had brought along a small radio with an ear plug so she thoughtfully provided a blow by blow account of the ArsenalUdinese game, using a raffia mat as the pitch and peas and diced carrots as the two teams (we were peas – Italy obviously). Quite why our team contained Fern Britton's husband and a woman named Maria is a mystery to me but then I never really understood sport. No wonder we lost. At last the dessert menus arrived and I was very surprised (and delighted) to see that I could order a Semifreddo. "I'll have half a frog", I guffawed to a bemused Luigi, while Edith shrieked with laughter at the Affrogato. (Actually it was Affogato, but after two bottles of wine it's hard to see straight). Menus successfully amended with eye pencil (much to Luigi's obvious displeasure) we wondered if we should carry out an impromptu kitchen inspection. No, apparently that just 16
wasn't going to happen. Luigi managed to assemble an assortment of kitcheny type people who linked arms purposefully in front of the door and somebody in our party decided that it would be advisable if we paid and left. Edith left a large pile of Lira as a tip (afterwards I worked out that she had actually left the equivalent of 8p) and promptly lay down on my surfboard as her legs had given way. Between us we towed her out and poked her into a passing taxi, along with the rest of our paraphernalia. Edith felt a bit more lively by 1am and on the way home we thoughtfully knocked up the fruit and veg man (and most of his family) to tell him that we wanted to reinstate our Wednesday delivery. Wasn't he pleased! Buona notte i miei amici. Surfing felice. Auntie May returns next month. . . Congratulations to Kimberley Richardson who found 32 names of football teams in Auntie May’s competition. Auntie says: “I think I'll present her with a year's subscription to Deep Magazine and a packet of cock soup. Now, back to my cornflake cakes. . .”
