Celebs’ Secret Diet Plan Revealed 12
Affinity master July 2013 9_Layout 1 copy 20/06/2013 21:13 Page 11
EAT MUSHROOMS SO DIETS DON’T GO PEAR-SHAPED The mushroom is the latest weapon for savvy celeb dieters who want to shed pounds quickly but still keep their assets.
“But the mushroom diet, just like the fungi itself, means you keep the weight where you want it, up top, and shed pounds where you don’t, down below!”
The ‘M-Plan’, unveiled last month, is the new diet based on mushrooms; that means women lose weight from problem tums, bums, thighs and upper arms, but still keep their bust intact.
“The ‘M-Plan’ is a favourite among celebrities who to want to drop a dress size quickly in time for red carpet events.
Top women’s nutritionist and health broadcaster, Jeannette Jackson, explains: “We all know that feeling of losing weight everywhere but where we want, particularly if you’re a typical British pearshape.
“It’ll be of no surprise that female celebrities will be looking more svelte than normal and I can exclusively reveal that mushrooms are the reason celebrities can look so good at the very last minute.”
How the diet works “Replacing just one regular lunchtime snack or dinner with a mushroom inspired dish will help women lose weight from the stubborn areas over a 14-day period.
There’s a myth that the waist is the last area of the body where women lose weight. In fact, it’s one of the areas of the body that we move the most, along with bums, thighs and upper arms.
If we eat more mushrooms, it’s likely that less high calorie foods will be consumed throughout the day over all because of the vegetable’s powerful nutritional values.
Not only mushrooms help with weight loss – the super vegetable can help improve your looks too, given that mushrooms are high in B vitamins, iron and zinc, all of which are needed to make your skin, hair and nails strong, healthy and shiny.
The dietary fibre in mushrooms helps promote good bowel function, leaving you feeling more satisfied, so you won’t be hungry again as quickly, preventing you from snacking. Mushrooms are also extremely rich in protein – an ideal nutritional food source, yet the vegetable is low in calories which is important where weight loss is considered.
Avid fans include celebrities such as Emmerdale and Waterloo Road star, Roxanne Pallett, plus Kelly Osbourne, who both claim to have lost dress sizes from eating raw mushrooms regularly. Even popstar Katy Perry eats a diet heavy in mushrooms to keep her sexy slender figure.

The sunshine
Vitamin W
e have just been through one of the longest winters and coldest springs on record, and as a result we are all at risk of a deficiency in the vital nutrient Vitamin D. Those at highest risk are dark skinned, the elderly, children and those who have little access to sunlight, which has such a profound effect on our health and vitality; we all feel better after a warm summer or winter holiday to reduce the ‘blues’.
development of some cancers, particularly tumours of the breast, colon, ovaries and the prostate. Whilst excessive exposure to UV rays can be dangerous, a little is beneficial; even essential. Just like plants which need the sun to grow, we need it too. Just some of the general benefits of adequate levels of vitamin D – particularly from sunshine - include improved circulation naturally balancing hormones, improved mood by producing endorphins, encouraging more restful sleep and a reduction in insomnia, clearer skin with a natural healthy glow and reduction in acne, psoriasis and eczema. Research also suggests that we are more productive at work with adequate sunlight and vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D increases energy and the amount of oxygen transported around the body and is showing it has a vital role in preventing and mitigating in a wide variety of diseases, including high blood pressure and heart disease, liver disease, psoriasis, osteoporosis and MS to name but a few . Taken with calcium it reduces hip fractures in elderly women by 38% which does not increase risk of heart disease or stroke by promoting the absorption of calcium in the bones. Research is also looking to establish a link between a drop in blood pressure with moderate exposure to sunlight, allowing the body to naturally absorb vitamin D, as those living near the equator are less likely to suffer from hypertension. Vitamin D is also showing in research to be playing a role in both adult and childhood obesity. Research in Columbia found that children with the lowest levels of the vitamin at the beginning of their study had a tendency to retain more body fat and gain weight more easily than their peers who had good levels of vitamin D. Without sufficient Vitamin D children are also particularly at risk of softening of the bones and muscle weakness.
Dietary sources include cod liver oil, salmon, tinned tuna in water, mackerel, sardines, egg yolks, liver, fortified orange juice and cereals, milk and yoghurt, and Swiss cheese are the richest sources. Ideally, we need to ensure we get as much from the sun which is absorbed by the skin - or taken from our diet. But in our climate, we may well need a bit of help from a good quality supplement. Care needs to be taken with the dose, as over supplementation may cause nausea, vomiting, weakness, leading onto confusion and an irregular heartbeat. It also has the potential to raise calcium levels to such a degree that leads to the development of kidney stones. By spending 15-20 minutes in the sun before 11am or after 4pm - without sunscreen - for vitamin D to be absorbed by and manufactured in the skin, we can make the most of this natural resource for the benefit of our health.
Digestive disorders, including ulcerative colitis and inflammatory bowel disease are helped with vitamin D and it appears that we are more at risk of Type 2 Diabetes without adequate levels of this vitamin. It also seems to have a protective affect against the 14

T
o many they are just a glorified scrapbook, with pictures from magazines and newspapers stuck on a sheet of card but a mood or vision board (as they are known), are being used as a motivational tool by life coaches, on the basis that if you collect pictures of the sort of life you want, Hey Presto! you’ll make it happen. So what makes moodboards so much more powerful than writing a wish list of life goals – it’s all down to how our brains work. Images are processed by a different part of the brain to words, one that taps into our emotional state at a subconcious level and because you choose images with the feeling part of your brain, rather than the thinking side the moodboard then reflects the real you, so it gets you in touch with your deepest passions and dreams. It’s all down to the Law of Attraction principle — your feelings and thoughts can attract events and persuade the cosmos to work in your favour. Australian psychologist Dr Tim Sharp says “Mood boards do work. Obviously it isn’t going to make a new celebrity or designer life fall magically into your hands, but they can become a very powerful tool in your goal-setting repertoire,” he adds: “a tangible means of improving everything from your relationships to your health, your career, lifestyle and more.” We all know writing a to-do list means it will get done, but we don’t apply the same logic to our hopes, dreams and passions, we let them drift by – so if you really want to achieve something then pin it down – literally. Choosing and collecting images that represent your future goals and aspirations, whether it’s your fantasy holiday home or super toned legs for your holiday, is like setting a filter in your brain’s search engine; you naturally home in on relevant information and opportunities that take you closer to your goals but that may otherwise have passed by unnoticed. So what are you waiting for? Your vision of a new future is in your hands and your mood board! First things first: decide what your life upgrade looks, tastes, smells, feels and sounds like, Then channel your inner child and get cutting and sticking! 31
Prepare your mood board – Use a pinboard or whiteboard as this will allow you to change your pictures or add more as your goals evolve. You can also use cardboard, your fridge door, a blank wall or inside a wardrobe door. Your board needs to be somewhere you can see it every day. As an extra take a photo of the end result, and set it as the background on your computer, desktop or iPhone – the more you see it the better By ensuring you see your board all the time you get to use a method top sportsmen have used for ages: visualisation. Visualising an experience and having that experience sends very similar messages to your brain. When sportsmen watch a video of another player with great form or they visualise themselves shooting a perfect goal, it can help them improve their own performance. The same goes for mood boards – done correctly, a visual representation of your goals can make them more ‘real’ – increasing your chances of reaching them. The right images - Images will form the basis of your board – so you need to think exactly what your life upgrade looks like, don’t just use magazines, use websites, photo albums, blogs and pinterest boards. Keep it Real - The Red Ferrari, The Luxury Yacht - does that really represent your dream life? So many people produce the same board on their first attempt – a generic version of ‘the good life.’ Scrap the Ferrari and Yacht and paste up a yellow Vespa, if that’s what you love - if it is the Ferrari or Yacht you crave then by all means paste that on the board, but do it for YOU, not what you feel you should do. Include yourself - Paste yourself on your board – preferably looking happy, relaxed and radiant. The mood board is about you, if you aren’t in there somewhere it will be full of stunningly beautiful pictures, but not personally relevant. It’s just like writing your goals down, or telling people about them. So that cut and paste board isn’t just an enjoyable time waster after all, it could be your best step to happiness, being able to look at something and saying “that’s what I want” takes you a giant step nearer to achieving it – where’s the scissors and pritt stick?

Learning about summer learning Many parents may have read articles or seen news reports, about the ‘slide’ in learning that happens over the summer. What this means is that children lose momentum with their learning, surveys have shown they often need reteaching in September some of the things that they knew before the summer holidays. Research reported in the Independent claims that 1 in 3 children will ‘fall behind’ as a result of the long summer holiday. But I expect many of us will have happy memories of long summer holidays, hopefully enjoying a bit of summer sun, probably even being bored at times, but there is something valuable to be learned in having to create our own fun. For parents, summer can be tough too, even if you are lucky enough to have a holiday away from home for a couple of weeks there will still be four weeks of children asking what they can do. So if, as a parent, you are dreading the holidays then make sure that you plan ahead. 32

Holiday Courses From language learning to sports, drama to canoeing, there are a vast array of summer holiday courses that children and young people can enjoy. Some are close to home and attendance is on a day basis, while others mean they get the chance to go on a residential trip as well as enjoying a new learning opportunity. The residential ones don’t always come cheap but if you are a working parent who has to either fork out for summer child care or complete the daunting organisational challenge of using friends and relatives to provide care, it may be worth considering. Often with these courses they won’t be learning in classrooms in the same way as they do at school, they will usually be active and experienced based, and even a local ‘day’ holiday club will give them the chance to mix with lots of new folk and hopefully try some new things.
Board Games Many of us may have memories of Monopoly when it was too rainy to go outdoors -and most children really enjoy board games. They may need adult input to get it going smoothly but it is a great way of learning some vital social and emotional skills. If the sun is shining then there is nothing to stop them playing in the garden and having a picnic as well, you or the children, could even arrange a ‘tournament’. Projects Often children or young people when they do have a moment of inspiration, want to do things that will simply take too long, or involve too much effort, in the what can be very busy term times. It might be anything from building a den to starting a magazine or painting and re-designing their bedroom, even making a movie! As a parent try to be supportive, it’s sometimes tempting to say ‘no’ without thinking about the positives almost any project will be a vehicle for learning. There may need to be some budgeting, but that is learning too.
Clubs & Activities Quite apart from the ‘full time’ type of courses mentioned above, there are lots of other ways to keep children and young people learning. Summer holidays could be the time to try out sailing, golf or something art based. The council runs some schemes and schools may be sent information about local schemes. But once again, unless you meet specific criteria there is likely to be a charge.
Read Read Read It’s been shown over and over again that reading aids general learning. If your child struggles with reading then you definitely need to make sure they keep practising. Holidays could be the time for an intensive catch up course, particularly for younger children, an intensive phonics course for example could really boost reading levels. What they read is almost irrelevant, though clearly parents should select appropriate material, but books, magazines, reading on line or on Kindles, reading recipes or instructions, clues for treasure hunts, newspapers (or sections of them) are all useful and will all give much needed practice. Reading TO children is also really good and sharing, where you each read a bit, can help with books they find a bit hard.
Using Technology Many of us think the summer should be all about dragging kids away from computer screens or play stations and yes, as in all things balance is important, but technology can be a great way of learning. There are lots of sites with games and learning activities for children of all ages. Many schools subscribe to learning sites that children can access from home, so it’s worth checking with the school before the holidays start. Providing you have access to the internet many learning games sites are free, but if you don’t and are struggling to fill the days then using the internet at the public library can be an alternative. On a rainy summer day ‘playing’ some educational games can be useful for their learning and fun for them.
Time Without doubt most children and a lot of young people (though they may struggle to admit it) love spending time with adults, parents, other relatives or friends, and in some ways what they are doing doesn’t matter. It is the quality time with adults that is important. If you are baking a cake, painting a fence or digging an allotment, try to find a way to involve your child, as it can be a great learning opportunity.
Getting Active As a nation we understand more and more that we need to make sure children exercise. One of the good things about the summer holidays is that there is time for walks, bike rides, a game of rounders and simply playing outside. Young children generally have no problem being active, quite the opposite in fact, they love to run, jump, skip, hop, and as we are fortunate enough to have a lot of parks in Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, gathering a group of your childrens’ friends and heading to the park is a low cost way of getting them active. It can even be good for the grown ups too!
So this summer don’t worry too much about those looming holidays, simply plan ahead and remember your time is probably the best aid to learning that you could give your child.

M
urray’s is aptly named after the famous F1 commentator Murray Walker.
We arrive to be shown to the lounge where we were served aperitifs and delicious homemade canapés, whilst deliberating over the new summer menu. The whole atmosphere is one of relaxation and the service is attentive without being overbearing. Choices were made and we were left to finish our pre-dinner drinks before being led into the private, intimate dining room with soft music playing in the background, low lighting and candles on the tables - made it the perfect setting for a romantic meal for two. Freshly baked homemade bread rolls in a variety of flavours including apricot & walnut, were served along with an amuse bouche with a quails egg and a sweet potato sauce, the tastes were divine. Starters of pigs cheeks (braised pig cheeks, apple, and gallette potato) and foie gras (duck liver, air dried breast, prunes and cherries) were served, the presentation wouldn’t look out of place in a top art gallery! The cheeks were tender and impeccably cooked with the apple mousse complimenting them perfectly, the foie gras had an assortment of flavours, all coming together to produce a divine mixture of tastes. Guinea fowl (truffle, figs, pancetta and lemon) and lamb (broad beans, pomme anns, tomatoes, sweet breads) followed our tasty starters. The guinea fowl had an amalgamation of flavours, from slightly sweet to far eastern aromatic, again absolutely divine. The lamb was tender and full of flavour, the accompanying tomatoes were sweet and mouth-watering delicious. Desserts were a heavenly treat with cheesecake (rhubarb, vanilla and crème fraiche) and mandarin and yoghurt (mandarin soufflé and yoghurt sorbet) - everything is freshly made to order and the cheesecake was the best I have ever tasted, with strips of rhubarb that was sweet without being overbearing. The soufflé was light and airy, truly scrumptious. Desserts were accompanied by a superb dessert wine and to finish off coffee was served with just the most amazing homemade petit fois. A truly magical dining experience, dishes were delightful, presentation perfect and service superb - we will definitely be returning for another visit. “
Affinity master July 2013 9_Layout 1 copy 20/06/2013 21:21 Page 39
To compliment the meal
Ingredients 250g pack mini cooking chorizo 400g (14oz) conchiglie pasta (or use penne if you like) 2 roasted red peppers (from a jar is fine) 250g (9oz) cherry tomatoes 1tbsp sherry vinegar handful fresh basil
Louis Jadot Macon Villages 2011 Dry and easy to drink, lively and charming, this is a fruity wine with a floral scent and a hint of lemon, the Mâcon Villages should be drunk chilled and rather young. This wine goes very well with a large range of foods including hors d`oeuvres, fried or grilled fish, sea food, goat`s milk cheese or poultry; it makes a great picnic wine.
Recipe Heat the oven to 200 C, 180 C fan, gas 6.
RRP £10.99 Budgens, Wine Rack, Booths, Wimbledon Wine Cellars
Cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water until tender.
Jean Luc Colombo La Redonne Blanc 2011
Put the cherry tomatoes and chorizo into a roasting tin with a little oil and cook for about 10 to 15 minutes, until cooked through and the chorizo is crispy on the outside. Keep the oil. Leave to cool.
The wine displays a light straw gold colour. On the nose, the Viognier offers elegance and aromatic complexity, while the Roussanne brings structure to the wine. On the palate, exotic flavors of mangos and apricots are perfectly balanced by a nice acidity. A wine to drink just slightly chilled in order to let the aromas of peaches and honey fully develop. A fresh floral wine which makes a great summer aperitif.
Drain the pasta and add a little oil to stop it sticking together. Roughly chop the peppers. Then mix together the chorizo, tomatoes and any oil from the roasting tin with the pasta. Stir in the peppers and sherry vinegar. Season then scatter over some fresh basil.
£12.99 Waitrose Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Gamay Noir 2012 A fresh, light bodied wine bursting with bright cherry, strawberry and ripe blackberry flavours and aromas, backed up by a little dash of spice. Flower of the Month July Tips... ⧫ Deadheading - Whether its bedding plants, perennials or roses, if you remove faded flowers you will increase the chance of more flowers ⧫ Towards the end of this month summer prune wisteria. Cut back this year’s long, whippy shoots to about 5-6 leaves (around 20cm) ⧫ Feed shrubs and perennial plants with a liquid feed ⧫ Feed roses with rose fertiliser ⧫ Don’t forget to water during extreme dry spells especially anything that has been planted this year, including hanging baskets and patio containers ⧫ Summer prune apple trees. ⧫ Keep weeding
Achillea Millefolium 'Paprika' (Paprika Yarrow) - This striking perennial yarrow forms a spreading mat of fern-like, mid-green leaves to 3 feet wide. They are among the best perennials for planting in hot, dry and sunny locations, providing good colour throughout the summer months. This hybrid selection has cherry-red, gold centered flowers, later fading to light pink and creamy yellow. Excellent for cutting, fresh or dried. Remove faded flowers regularly to promote continued blooming. Inclined to spread, so site this carefully or plan to reduce the clumps each spring. Easily divided in early spring. Trim back hard after the first flush of bloom to maintain a compact habit.
Affinity Loves....... Sussex Croquet Set This beautifully made Sussex Croquet Set includes 4 mid-sized 33'' hardwood croquet mallets, 4 junior sized Sussex croquet balls, 6 steel hoops, a regulation pattern winning post and a rule book - and can all be packed away in the sturdy green canvas carry bag stamped with Jaques' logo. MAN of the month
Name: James Pharaoh Age: 37 Occupation: Theatre Manager / Director - Bedfringe
Describe yourself in three words? Ambitious / Stubborn / Creative
What would you do if you had a time machine? I have learnt through the Back to the Future Films and Family Guy that one mustn’t alter the course of history etc. How about going back to Summer 1944, Thurleigh airfield and working with the USAF as ground crew?
What makes you stand out in a crowd? I think I am a ‘behind the scenes kind of person’ to be honest, with no intention of standing out in a crowd. Although, this article might contradict that statement. ☺
You can’t leave the house without? My house keys… that would really mess up my day.
Your top three movies? The Thing (Carpenter) because it focuses on isolation and a fine parody of the aids epidemic. Good Morning Vietnam as I admire the determination of Robin’s character to challenge the system. Withnail & I... who doesn’t like this film? The irony of Richard’s outstanding solo performance to the pack of wolves at the end of this film sums up the acting industry for me (your best performances may not be to the people who should be listening?).
If I take a look in your fridge what would I find? Not a lot. I am a little disorganised when it comes to the food stock issue. I tend to work late most evenings so eat at work. Love going out for meals, so Saturday night or Sunday lunchtime are usually sorted. If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you say to them? Michael Stipe (REM). I would probably just shake his hand as the man is a genius.
What do you do to relax? Not run a fringe festival! The most effective method of relaxing for me is to get away from the UK… a sunny beach somewhere. Don’t check emails... just disconnect.
If you were a biscuit what would you be? Maybe a jammy dodger as my ‘family’ nickname is Jampot. Who is your inspiration/role model? When it comes to Bedfringe it has to be Christopher Richardson. He’s the Godfather of fringe theatre. Christopher founded The Pleasance Theatre in London (Caledonian Road) and then The Pleasance, Edinburgh (the largest of the Edinburgh Fringe theatres). These venues were specifically set up to allow new and upand-coming artists to showcase their stuff. When I first met him many years ago (2003) it was quite daunting, but now he is my mentor (and values Bedfringe in high regard). A legend!
Your most extravagant purchase and why? That’s got to be my car. I was fed up with driving my dented silver Corsa (for ten years) so went out one morning and purchased a convertible sports car. Great fun… when the sun shines of course. If you could be anyone or anything what would it be? A pilot. I got a ‘moderate’ obsession with civil aviation and simulation. If I had £80,000 for the course and was ten years younger, I would be flying for BA (“I ain’t getting on no plane fool!”).
What is the one gadget you couldn't live without? Certainly not my satnav as it keeps sending me into fields or fords that my car can’t drive through. I need my phone because everybody else has one.
Describe your ideal woman? That’s my girlfriend Vanessa! She helps me through all my fringe festival stresses! I am a very lucky man! If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you take with you? 1 x SAS survival guide, 1 x leatherman (a posh Swiss army knife), 1 x piano.
Where do you see yourself in ten years? The job interview question... I live each day as it comes. That being said, I would like return to the countryside in a nice big house. If only... 62

taggering statistics have come to my attention lately with a staggering 176 professional footballers currently in jail. On top of that, three out of every five Premier League players go bankrupt within five years of their football careers coming to a close. This summer, every club in the country are cutting their squads due to the introduction of the Financial Fair Play scheme and that means there will be possibly up to a 1,000 players on the scrapheap. What will happen to those 1,000 players? Will they go down the wrong road and get themselves into trouble with the law? Will they spend more money than they have to keep up with the lifestyle they are used to? The big question is, are the big governing bodies doing enough to prevent this situation? I know for a fact that the PFA work extremely hard to help their young and old professional footballers. They support Tony Adam’s ‘Sporting Chance Clinic’, which works with athletes who suffer from alcoholism, betting addiction, drug abuse and most of all depression. The PFA work with a number of organisations to help the players’ concerned. The LMA are also there to help their former managers with the problems that they may encounter and the work these organisations do cannot be underestimated. The Daily Mail recently used a number of players as ‘case studies’ to highlight what a number of promising footballers lost, as a result of getting mixed up in the wrong sort of people. In fact, so many have spent time behind bars for a range of offences. One of those case studies, was on former Liverpool youth team and Tranmere Rovers goalkeeper Michael Kinsella who, when released by Tranmere at 20, turned to crime to pay for a house in Spain and several fast cars. Kinsella said in his interview with the Daily Mail: ‘I was a bad, angry person who got into drug-dealing because I got greedy and it offered good money. And it can happen today. A lot of players will have mates from the same kind of places and council estates I did. When football finishes and there is no education to fall back on, the temptation is there. I left football at Tranmere aged 20.
At 25, I was earning Premier League money [from drug d e a l i n g ] . Morecambe and Chester offered me £200 a week, I didn’t even consider it,’ Kinsella said. The big problem I feel is that no matter how much you help other people, at the end www.theposh.com of the day, they have to help themselves. Even It is such a sad state of affairs. A lot of more alarming, is that the statistics that players turn to the bottle, get mixed up in Premiership players who earned obscene the wrong group of people, and drift into money during their career, lose it all depression. Sometimes, when players are within five years of leaving the game. on the scrapheap, boredom sets in and We could argue that we are doing enough to stop these things happening to our players. But what can we do? The other side of the coin is; are we doing too much? We take youngsters’ straight from school, develop them into our Academies, we treat them like Kings and they are in a situation where they have everything done for them. We promise these players the Earth, we make them feel like they are superstars and it is such a shock to them when they are released. When they are released and go out into the real world, they struggle to accept it. They don’t know how to handle everything. They are used to having their backsides wiped from the day they leave school and in the real world, it is a culture shock for them. As a schoolboy a lot of these lads put all their focus into becoming a professional footballer. When that dream is crushed, what happens then? In that article in the Daily Mail, there was a short piece on Alan Hudson, once darling of Chelsea, Stoke and Arsenal who retired in 1985. It said that he admitted no longer being the centre of attention was like a bereavement. ‘Nobody knows how traumatic it is,’ he says. ‘I found gambling was my biggest problem. You can sweat off the booze — but not debts. I must have lost £200,000 and ended up living off £30a-week dole money.’
64
they do all those things to literally pass the time. Whatever side of the fence you are on, this is a big, big problem. People outside of the game have a perception of footballers. What could possibly be a down side to being a professional footballer, whether you are in the game or have enjoyed a long career? That is why people find it so hard to understand when high profile players find themselves in such trauma. From the high profile cases of Paul Gascoigne, Stan Collymore and Gary Speed, there are many examples of problems within the game. It is very difficult for people to understand. It is hard to cope with. Football is a short career. The phrase ‘live for today’ is too often taken to the extreme by footballers. You have to ‘live for tomorrow’ because when your career comes to an end you could be in your mid-30s. There is still a long time of your life to come. It is a sad state of affairs, but what can we do about it? Do we need to do more or are we doing too much? It is a difficult question to answer and one that I would like to hear your thoughts on.

Happy Birthday you Smooth Devil! Aston Martin Celebrates 100 Years
T
he globally-renowned British luxury sports car maker is marking its first 100 years with a series of UK and international celebrations, highlighting the unique success of the brand worldwide. On 15 January 1913, Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford founded a new automotive venture. They called their company Bamford & Martin which later became Aston Martin, acknowledging Robert Bamford’s success at the Aston Clinton Hillclimb in Buckinghamshire, where he had successfully raced their very first cars. Bamford and Martin began their business in Chelsea’s Henniker Mews in London, becoming well known as providers of sporting machines to enthusiastic racers and discerning enthusiasts. The first Aston Martin, named Coal Scuttle was built in 1915. Following Coal Scuttle and the Great War, three more prototype cars were built including Bunny (no longer in existence) and chassis number A3 which was the third Aston Martin ever built and the oldest in existence. The car is now owned by the Aston Martin Heritage Trust.
In the century that followed Aston Martin has come to represent many things, from sporting prowess through to technical innovation, beautiful design, fine craftsmanship and superior performance. In their first 90 years the company built fewer than 15,000 cars. In January 2003 Aston Martin moved to its purpose built premises at Gaydon, in Warwickshire. Since then Aston Martin, overseen by CEO Dr Ulrich Bez, has produced 45,000 cars to huge critical and commercial acclaim. The original DB9 and Vantage were joined by the Rapide, DBS, Virage and now the timeless new DB9 and ultimate GT, the Vanquish – Aston Martin's latest flagship sports car. Aston Martin is too, no longer focused on the domestic market but an international player, exporting 75% of its annual production around the world to 146 dealerships in 41 countries. Aston Martin has also played a key role in one of last year’s most hotly-anticipated films, with the iconic DB5 stealing the automotive limelight in the latest James Bond blockbuster, Skyfall.

Centenary Celebrations - The centrepiece of the celebrations will be a week-long festival of all things Aston Martin which is set to take place this month from 15th to 21st July. Designed to appeal to owners and enthusiasts of the brand, the Centenary Week will include open house activities at Aston Martin’s exclusive Gaydon headquarters, including factory-based events and driving tours. The week will culminate in a 1,000-guest ‘birthday party’ on Saturday 20th July and a spectacular Centenary Concours event in central London on Sunday 21st July. This highlight of the centenary celebrations will be held in central London in partnership with the Aston Martin Heritage Trust and the Aston Martin Owners Club. It will feature the 100 most iconic cars in a concours display and up to 1,000 Aston Martins forming the largest gathering in the 100-year history of the great British marque. Centenary Drives - A number of centenary drives will also be held to coincide with the birthday party and the concours event. These will include a James Bond-themed route around England and Wales taking in a number of the iconic Bond film locations, a drive through the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and a rally through six European countries in six days. In America, the Pebble Beach centenary drive programme offers an opportunity to visit some of California’s most scenic regions, before spending the weekend at the legendary Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Centenary Logo - To mark its first century in business, Aston Martin has created a special centenary logo: a dynamic spiralling design derived from the nautilus shell, one of the most perfectly proportioned and mathematically precise objects found in nature. Ninety nine points arranged in an elegant helix spiral out from the Aston Martin logo and culminate in a red '100' to mark the celebration year. The logo has been designed to express forward motion while also acknowledging the importance of the past.

A Bit of Rocky Horror
Don’t dream it – be it!

S
ince its first appearance at the Royal Court Theatre in June 1973, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show has become the world’s favourite Rock n’ Roll musical. It has been performed worldwide in over 30 countries in every continent and has been translated into more than 20 languages. To celebrate the 40th anniversary, Christopher Luscombe has created a brand new production for a year-long UK National Tour and this month the tour reaches Milton Keynes. Telling the story of squeaky-clean college sweethearts Brad and Janet and their adventure at the hands of Dr Frank-n-Furter (a sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania), The Rocky Horror Show is packed full of fun, frolics and bursting at the seams with timeless classics, including ‘Sweet Transvestite’, ‘Damn It Janet’ and of course, the pelvic thrusting ‘Time Warp’. Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Show is a non-stop party! and is, by far, the raunchiest show you will ever see – this is definitely not a show you’d take your mother to!! Not that should put anyone off though, as soon as the first few bars of Time Warp runs through the theatre, everyone is up on their feet, stepping to the left, jumping to the right, and pelvic thrusting like there’s no tomorrow. The atmosphere is infectious and audience participation is all part of the show’s charm, with people regularly chipping in with little ad-libs. Ready to thrill you with its frothy, fun, and naughty moments, this is the boldest bash of them all, so sharpen those stilettos for the rockiest ride of your life! It’s a guaranteed party! But, be warned, this show has rude parts! Milton Keynes Theatre Mon 15th July – Sat 20th July 0844 871 7652 or visit www.atgtickets.com/miltonkeynes 69

Welcome to the musings of Yummy Mummy. Living in Bedford she is married to ‘The Husband’ and together they have 4 children, Rafferty 8, Violet 6, Roman 5 and baby Clementine 1. All my views are my own and are not intended to offend anyone but alas I may frustrate you as I certainly do myself and no doubt those around me at times. I would love to hear from you, your views, questions or indeed just to share your experiences of trying to be a Yummy Mummy. Email me at info@affinitymag.co.uk
Holiday Time!
T
he countdown is on!! Four weeks until the school breaks up and six weeks until our annual summer holiday! That’s just six weeks to get a bikini body – ha ha!! There is more chance of me having another child and as The Husband has taken care of that – snip snip – then I would be in serious trouble if I announced a pregnancy!
in the last eight years, but that is better than nothing surely? As I plod along on it I try and visualise the sunshine; we are going abroad this year to re-acquaint ourselves with the hot yellow ball in the sky! Then I imagine myself relaxing by the pool - of course we are going to a hotel with excellent kids clubs! And when I start to flag, I see all the inclusive food and drink!
Whilst I don’t look too bad considering I’ve had four children, and I am not in the first flushes of youth I’m not ready to expose too much of myself to the masses! I know some people lose their inhibitions on holiday but I am definitely not one of them. Also to be frank most people when they sit down in a bikini will have some kind of roll (or three!!), but I like to conceal mine as best as I can! Now don’t get me wrong, I am not channelling the Daily Mail when it comes to outing anything that isn’t considered to be ‘body beautiful’ and fair play to people who let it all hang out. However, my personal taste is that of a little bit of modesty and let’s leave something to the imagination. I don’t just relate this to beachwear but in all areas of life, therefore you won’t catch me reading the ’50 Shades’ trilogy!
However before we even set foot on a plane I have to plan the school holiday entertainment, as five weeks is a long time to spend with your children. Lovely though they are, they do need entertaining and I need fewer reasons to reach for the wine! Anything that involves physical activity is always a good call, as there is nothing better than picking up worn out children who are in need of a chill and cuddles.
What I do believe is that we should all try to lead a healthy lifestyle, well 80% of the time, as a little bit of what you fancy does you good. So with the impending all inclusive holiday and the tankini to fit into, I have hit the treadmill with gusto! Luckily I own a treadmill, which was purchased after the birth of the first child when I realised that thoughts of visiting a gym would be just that – a thought! It’s fair to say it’s had sporadic use
Whatever you get up to over the summer holidays, have a great time and update us with what is happening on our Facebook page – www.facebook.com/AffinityMag or our Twitter - @AffinityMagz so we can share your recommendations!
Of course it won’t all be about holiday clubs as we will spend time, hopefully, exploring all the fantastic local parks – well as long as it doesn’t rain,! Hhhhmmmm... maybe I better invest in some art and craft materials as I have a feeling we could spend a lot of time indoors, judging by our ‘summer’ so far!!

Movie Relax like a Star
T
his month we decided to head into London and experience the delights of The Arch London a Boutique Hotel, tucked into a peaceful corner of the eminent Marylebone district, The Arch London is located in an area known as the postcode of choice for international A-list celebrities. Madonna lives opposite and regularly uses the hotels state of the art gym (glad I packed my trainers!) A paradise for art and architecture lovers, the hotel spans seven Grade II listed Georgian townhouses and two mews homes and is situated a stone’s throw from Bond Street and Hyde Park, making it an ideal base for a visit to London. Not many boutique hotels have doormen, but The Arch London has a very polite and helpful one - taking our car keys off us to park our car and unloading our luggage was an added bonus. Once inside, the foyer is quietly glamorous, boasting studded leather, marble and glass, some interesting art, including a piece by Vincent Poole, which features a two-metre-high technicolour silhouette of a woman whose body is made up of iconic images of the capital. We were shown to our room (which turned out to be the luxury Juniper Suite), a hidden hideaway in the basement with its own enchanting courtyard with outside heating, ideal for sipping a glass of wine or champagne, a separate sitting room, bedroom and study area creating the highest levels of comfort. Effortless technology has been incorporated into this divine suite, including a state-of-the-art television with blue-ray, Sky TV and
surround sound system in the sitting room and bedroom. A large opulent bathroom completes the space, with a separate invigorating rain shower, large bath and in true movie star fashion a flat screen television built into the wall.
and warm poached duck egg. Roast loin of saltmarsh lamb, anchovy puree and fondant potato and Strozzapreti pasta, tiger prawns with lemon and mint - all freshly cooked and delightful, with service being faultless.
Complimentary soft drinks, water and juice in all mini bars, Jing teas, and a Nespresso coffee machine is provided in all rooms; this 5 star hotel has thought of everything.
After dinner we retreated to our suite where we had the most wonderful nights sleep. In every room each bed is handmade and adorned with duckdown duvets and pillows that are so comfortable it is hard to describe.
After a relaxing couple of hours enjoying the luxuries of our suite (it is amazing, we are in the middle of London and it is so peaceful), we head down to experience the dining delights of the Hotels restaurant HUNter 486 (it takes its name from the Fifties dialling code for Marylebone). Open to guests and non-residents its open plan space has a cool vibe, glass light fixtures and lots of quirky features. Dinner began with cocktails and canapes in The Martini Library, a warm, opulent room where guests can enjoy fine cocktails or afternoon tea. With sumptuous armchairs and period stone fireplaces this is a truly decadent space. There is even a ‘press to refresh’ service button (I love it!). Only the finest locally grown produce and organic ingredients are used to create inspiring menus of satisfying dishes to savour at any time of day, and that is exactly what we did, savour the exqusite tastes of Carpaccio of beef, aged Parmesan and rocket salad with black olive tapenade, shaved white & green asparagus salad, morel vinaigrette,
We awoke refreshed and raring to go, breakfast was up to the high standard we had become acustomed to at this luxurious five star hotel, with choices to suit all tastes. The reason this boutique hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World™, is immediately apparant with its decor, finishing touches and attention to detail in not only all public areas of the hotel but also in all 82 guestrooms. They have created a space ideal for anyone wanting a little bit of luxury and comfort. So next time you're wondering where to stay when you next visit our nations capital make The Arch London top of your list for a truly unforgettable stay. Prices start from £205 for a standard room, and £1,005 for a suite. O
ut of the blue my husband decided to walk out on me a couple of months ago. He had been a little bit grumpy and we have had the usual ups and downs that marriages go through, but when he announced he needed some time on his own I was shocked. I thought maybe after a couple of weeks staying at his friends it would make him realise that our marriage was worth fighting for, however, the only contact I have had in the two months is the odd phone call or text when I text him asking to get together and talk. He still says he needs space as he isn't happy and if I was to push him for an answer then I won't like it. Am I wrong to keep hoping he will change his mind and come back? I am not coping very well as I feel like I am in limbo and can't move on with my life. Katie
You may need to let him know that you are still who you always were, and that while life has got in the way of your dreams sometimes, they are still there, and that you can work together to make them , or at least some of them happen . In this situation, he is unlikely to listen, so an old style letter that he can read a bit and go back to read again , would probably be the best way forward.
I
keep seeing images around my house, the latest was a bearded man all grey and dressed in clothes from around the 17th century, These images are disturbing me what can I do so I don't see them anymore? Maria. M Hi Maria, How fascinating, but yes I admit it can sometimes be a little scary too. You are open to psychic energy, and while it can help in life enormously if you can get used to the sights and feelings which spring up at you, it is not always possible to be in a strong enough state to accept spiritual connections that you have not asked for. The first thing that you should do is ask the visions to stop. It is most likely that when they are around you will not be able to get many words out, but if you can, just say: ‘Please go and leave me alone, I am not ready for this’ and they will leave. If you cannot do it at the time, make yourself a time in the day when you feel strong, light a candle, look into the flame and say it then, to all the spirits around you. Then before you go to sleep, use a little water with salt diluted into it and dab it on the space slightly up and between the eyebrows ( the third eye) and the nape of your neck ( the psychic gateway) This should help you sleep better. You can also use this throughout the day, if you feel uncertain or frightened. Failing that you can clear the house with sage smoke, or imagine a clear electric blue bubble of light around you, as protection.
Hi Katie, The cards say that your husband has hit a timeline in life where he sees it as a point to now do something that he has always wanted to do in his life, or decide that life is never going to change and he will be on this particular hamster wheel, going round and around the same path till he retires, or dies. This thought has terrified him and while he does not know what he wants, he knows what he does not want, and that is more of the same. The cards say that he does still love you, but that you have lost a lot of your previous drive for life and that your previous dreams have been put on the back burner of life to simmer away for later, (or never). This makes him wonder if you are who he fell in love with anymore. I’m sure that you have had the same thoughts yourself in the past, but pushed them away because you felt too busy to be indulging them. Your husband is shown as having taken a knock to his self confidence, most likely through a work situation, which started this chain of thought.

A quiet night in....... It's been eight years since Geniver Loxley lost her daughter, Beth at birth. Since that day, Gen has been floundering. While her husband Art builds his business reputation and their fortune, she can't let go of Beth. But then a stranger shows up on their doorstep, telling Gen the very thing she’s always desperately longed to hear: that her daughter was not stillborn, but was taken away as a healthy infant. That Beth is still out there, somewhere, waiting to be found. A fissure suddenly opens up in Gen’s carefully reconstructed life, letting in a flood of unanswerable questions. How could this possibly be true? Where is Beth? And why is Art so reluctant to get involved? As Gen delves into the darkest parts of her past, she starts to realize that finding the answers might open the door to something even worse, a truth that could steal everything she holds close. Even her own life. With searing emotional insight, Sophie McKenzie weaves a breathless thriller that digs in its hooks without mercy and twists without warning, confirming her place among today’s most exciting new voices in psychological suspense

“I have been advertising with Affinity for 18 months now, and can say without doubt that due to their direct marketing approach it has been instrumental in the ongoing success of G. Butler Loft Conversions. It is the direct marketing approach to advertising that has helped because the magazine is distributed to the right places that create leads rather than just something to read. When I am out and about I spot people reading the magazine and taking them away with them. Not bad for a magazine that has a high end look but is totally FREE!! I have tried other less attractive small local magazines but they don't seem to have the cosmopolitan look that Affinity seems to have nailed in a competitive market. In a nut shell if you had Affinity magazine on your coffee table you would leave it there! Affinity magazine sets out to give advertisers a quality medium to work with, at the same time giving their readers a feature filled issue month after month with somewhere to find good local trades people and businesses. I am very grateful to Jane and the team, and will continue to advertise on a long term basis.” Gary Butler G.Butler, Loft and Garage Conversion Specialists “We can’t praise Jane, David and the Affinity team highly enough. They produce a truly great magazine which we are proud to advertise in. As well as the hard work they put into the magazine, they have also found the time to support us, especially in our first year of running the Millhouse since January 2012. We can’t thank them enough.” Karl and Olivia Millhouse Hotel & Riverside Restaurant
