Five Surprising Winter Energy Boosters If the changing season, short dark days, dreary weather – and now lockdown 2.0 – is leaving you feeling lethargic and lacking in energy, you’re not alone. Winter fatigue is a common condition affecting millions of people in the UK – often setting in with the same seasonal regularity of the annual clock change. If you’re in need of some inspiration on how to beat fatigue brought on by the onset of winter, Lucy Blyth, wellbeing expert from energydots.com shares some secret energy boosters, which could give you a newfound lease of life:
1. Try Turmeric - often referred to as a wonder spice, turmeric has many health boosting benefits – including the ability to give your energy levels a pick me up and to help boost your immune system, all particularly beneficial in the winter months. The yellow coloured root is part of the ginger family and has been used in both cooking and medicine, specifically Ayurvedic medicine, since ancient times. Research has shown that taking a turmeric supplement can significantly lower fatigue levels it can also help protect your body from free radicals which put oxidative stress on the body leading to low energy and poor immune health. Although there are many ways to add turmeric to your food, for maximum results it is best taken as an extract with black pepper, which has been found to help the body increase absorption
2. Reharmonise your biosphere – did you know that continued low energy levels could be a sign that your body’s energy field is in need of re-harmonisation? One way to address this imbalance is a bioDOT from www.energydots.com Worn as a pendant, bracelet or wristband, a bioDOT is a magnetic disc programmed with harmonic interface (Phi) energy. Using the process of entrainment, bioDOT releases natural frequencies to remind your energy field of its optimum state, recharging your battery so you feel calmer, more focused and more energised. Similarly, with home working now the norm and increased devices in our personal spaces our constant exposure to wireless devices can put our body under electro-stress. Use a smartDOT alongside a bioDOT to retune EMFs emitted by wireless devices. bioDOTs and smartDOTs cost under £25 from www.energydots.com
3. Add butter to your coffee – a cup of coffee is most people’s go to pick me up every time they need an energy boost, but what many people don’t know is that adding a couple of tablespoons of butter and coconut oil can give it far reaching benefits. In contrast to a quick espresso
hit, butter coffee is said to provide a steady, long-lasting energy boost without a blood sugar crash. This is said to be because the added fat slows digestion meaning that the caffeine is absorbed into the body slower. To make butter coffee just add two tablespoons of butter (organic is best) and two tablespoons of coconut oil to a cup of coffee and blend it together.
4. Skip breakfast – Lorded as the most important meal of the day for many years, when and what you eat for breakfast could in fact be playing havoc with your blood sugar – resulting in a regular mid-morning energy dips. One of the reasons for this is the high GI foods, such as cereals, toast, pancakes, fruit juice and muffins that many people reach for every morning (especially when they wake up feeling sluggish due to winter fatigue) which lead to blood sugar spikes. Of course there are many breakfast alternatives which can lead to a steadier output of energy, however there is growing evidence that having no breakfast at all could in fact be the best option. Advocates of intermittent fasting believe that going at least 16 hours without eating could in fact be an energy booster. This is because the constant up and down cycle of blood sugar caused by eating throughout the day stresses our metabolism and results in overall lower energy levels and mental performance. Periods of fasting means that the body uses fat for energy. Fat is digested slowly resulting in a longer lasting, steady energy stream. 5. Think positive – It goes without saying that 2020 continues to be a year of significant stress for the entire population, and as we head into an uncertain winter this is only set to intensify. Negative thoughts, stress and worries are instant energy zappers and although there are no quick fixes for many of our stresses and strains, there are techniques we can use to manage them and help stop them from completely taking over our energy resources. Meditating, counting your blessings, talking to a friend or even a quick break to dance around the house to your favourite song are all ways that you can bring more positive energy into your life. Taking small steps to create a more positive outlook can have long lasting energy benefits.
Lucy continued: “It’s no secret that winter can be a tough time of the year for many people – the lack of vitamin D, more time spent indoors and what can seem like a long slog until Spring can all make us feel lacking in energy and motivation – something which is likely to be exemplified this year more than ever. As with everything, small changes can add up to a big difference. By understanding how and why you are experiencing lower energy and making simple lifestyle changes to address these issues you could find yourself with more spring in your step in no time.”

Why Honesty is the Best Policy It’s one of those sayings we all know and for many of us it’s something we live by – more or less. For me it’s about pragmatism, life seems generally easier when I’m honest. I’ve a terrible memory so I get myself in all sorts of ‘tangled webs’ when I deceive. I’m not saying it isn’t morally a good thing too, just that I think life is simpler when we are honest.
But in the course of my work recently I’ve talked to several professionals who would be people we’d regard as honest, teachers, heads, social workers, foster carers and they are in life generally scrupulously honest – with one exception, they aren’t always honest with themselves. You see, we have all been told how important it is to be honest with others but probably not many of us have been ‘schooled’ in being honest with ourselves. It’s come up in my professional consultation sessions in different ways but here’s one example.
I was asking one professional how a particular course was going, in this instance it was a Masters involving a lot of research in addition to a pretty demanding ’day job’. As we talked it became clear that the person was NOT enjoying the study but then it came out that they’d never really wanted to do the course anyway and had simply started it because several others had said it would be useful in terms of their career. We talked some more and it was evident that the course was having a negative impact on family life AND the job that this professional loved. Long story short they decided to give it up. But if they had been able to be honest with themselves at the beginning, they probably wouldn’t ever have started it. So, what on earth stops us being honest with ourselves?
Often, it’s simply because life is busy and the voices of others can drown out our own inner voice. People will tell us we ‘should’ do such and such or that it would be sensible to ….. What we then omit to do is take a bit of time to be reflect and be honest about how we feel about things. Of course, others may be very well meaning but it is only us who can really know how we feel about things what our priorities are at that point in our life or even our dreams because of course priorities and dreams change. We have probably all had experiences where we’ve allowed ourselves to be sort of dragged along or into something because someone else thought we’d enjoy it be good at it or
it would be good for us. It is important to be crystal clear that it is ok to say ‘no’ but sometimes we don’t because we haven’t taken the time to even realise that it is something, we maybe would be better to say ‘no’ to.
In terms of learning to be honest with ourselves we need to develop self-awareness. I’ve come across many people who still see themselves as they were years ago not as they are today – their view of themselves being influenced by relationships (which can be a bit of a mirror) from years ago. It can be helpful to jot down a few words that you would use to describe yourself and then ask a few friends how they see you, ask them to write a few descriptive words about you too. Do they match? You can extend this by noting priorities and ambitions and seeing if those close to you would think the same.
But actually, knowing what you feel about things and what you want, what your priorities are can be the first hurdle.
This takes time and stillness away from all those other voices. One way to start is to carve out sometime each day for yourself. To sit with your thoughts, though it could be going for a walk or another solitary activity that allows you time alone with your thoughts.
When we begin a journey of self-honesty it can be helpful to gather some support – someone who can act as a mirror or sounding board but choose carefully – it could be a friend or family member but they will often have a firm view of you and may find it hard to separate themselves from what they think they know about you. That is one of the reasons why some people elect to have a coach someone who can support them on their self-discovery pathway. But being honest and self-aware might come a cost – it may require change and adaptation not only from yourself but from people who have become used to dealing with a particular ‘version’ of you. It may require you to make changes and start doing things in a different way. If it can be embraced the reward may be great as you learn to live with a new sense of authenticity. My view is it pays to be honest and when it comes to being honest with yourself the rewards can be huge.

Midlife Madness This year we’ve all had to adapt. Which has meant for a lot of us losing things we enjoyed, not being able to see people we feel connected to and hundreds of other things from holidays to far flung places, work outings, working (in an office) visits to museums or zoos for many months and to simpler pleasures like a visit to the local pub – which we could do, then couldn’t, or could only in some places! Etc etc etc. It has been amazing to realise that things that we took for granted can indeed be pulled like a proverbial rug from underneath us. You see it has happened before! Apologies if you can sense a little bitterness but when I was younger, I had this glorious idea that I would retire!!
Not only retire, but somehow retire and be financially secure, whilst also being well and healthy. I’d seen others do it and my impression was that retirement days consisted of Pilates, book clubs, lunches with friends perhaps a spot of voluntary work, maybe jam making or a new-found interest in gardening. All interspersed with holidays or cruises. Perhaps setting oneself some challenges as well, climbing some mountain, taking up a new craft hobby, or even learning a new skill like golf or cycling. Yes, I had happily constructed for myself a rosy future. And I was preparing myself for it in the sense that from being the age of 18 I had paid what felt like a fairly substantial chunk of my wages into the said pension pot. Only to find as I aged and got nearer the magic numbers to get said pension, the goal posts moved not by a few inches but to a different ‘pitch’ altogether! I do take some responsibility as I must confess when key changes were being made, I was asleep at the metaphorical wheel. You see although I was ageing
gradually and with style of course, age is such a relative concept that although I envisaged halcyon days of retirement ahead, I didn’t realise it would creep up on me quite as quickly as it did. So, there I am approaching this magical age when I’d get to join what seemed to me like a very privileged club only to find that membership rules had changed and I had to wait a further 6 years! Not a happy bunny, or aging hare! You see not only is 6 extra years a long time by anybody’s measure its 6 years when you are aging and trust me with every passing year there is the chance of worsening health and fitness. Seems very unfair to put it mildly.
But what can one do? Not a lot so I must confess to a teeny bit of happiness that while still expected to keep working to support myself at least now (for the moment at least) I can do most of this from the confines of my own home. Now I know lots of people are finding this very tedious but I must confess I’m rather loving it – just the working from home bit – I’m missing all the social activities terribly. It means I can get up later as I don’t have to face a drive or train journey – which means I can breakfast with hubby so he doesn’t have to feel alone and be stuck just reading his paper by himself, I know he must be loving that! I’m at home all day so I can have coffee breaks pretty much when I like and have little chats to hubby who is also around – and even suggest little jobs he might do if he’s not too busy. He does work from home too but doesn’t seem too busy much of the time. So, that helps to stave away the boredom for him.
In some ways while I’m not able to do all the fun things I had envisaged I do feel I am sort of beginning that easing down journey. I hope hubby is enjoying it as much as me!! If not, maybe our marriage that will vanish into the mist as well as my retirement!

Jewelled Butternut & Brussel Sprout Tahchin-Style Rice “A colourful, celebratory rice dish packed with winter veg and a potent mix of powerful savoury flavours”.
Ingredients
1 small butternut squash, peeled and cut into 3cm chunks 3 medium red onions, peeled with root attached, cut into 8 wedges 6 tbsp vegetable oil 100g whole skin-on almonds 300g basmati rice 6 tbsp tahini 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 lemon, zest and juice 400g Brussels sprouts Large pinch saffron 100g soft dried apricots, roughly chopped 1 pomegranate, seeds removed Small bunch parsley, roughly chopped Small bunch dill, roughly chopped
Method
Preheat the oven to 220˚C/200˚C fan/gas 7. Spread the squash and onion wedges in a single layer on a large, rimmed, foil-lined baking tray. Season, drizzle with 2 tbsp oil and roast for 30 minutes. Add the almonds to a small baking tray, put on a shelf below the squash and roast everything for a final 10 minutes, until the squash is tender. Meanwhile, rinse the rice in 3-4 changes of water and bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Stir in the rice and boil briskly until al dente (about 5-7 minutes). Drain, return to the pan and put the sieve back on top, gently running cold water over the rice until cooled. Drain well and let stand for 10 minutes. Mix the tahini with the garlic, lemon zest and juice, and 5-6 tbsp cold water to make a smooth, pourable sauce; season. Mix a small mugful of rice (about 100g) with ½ (half) the tahini; set the rest aside, to serve. Trim the sprouts – set aside any clean outer leaves to serve, discarding any that are damaged – and then finely slice. Cut a square of parchment paper just larger than the base of a deep 25cm saucepan (or casserole pan) and scrunch a few times, before laying into the pan. Add the remaining 4 tbsp oil and the
saffron, and then spread the tahini-rice mix over the base in an even layer. Scatter in ⅓ (one-third) of the rice, apricots, almonds, pomegranate seeds and herbs, followed by ½ (half) the roast veggies and sliced sprouts. Repeat, finishing with a final layer of plain rice, reserving the final ⅓ (one-third) of everything else, to serve. Poke about 8 or so holes in the rice with the handle of a wooden spoon, so they reach the base. Cook over a medium heat for 15 minutes, rotating the pan occasionally (you should see steam being released). Wrap the pan lid in a clean tea towel, cover and cook over a very low heat for 35 minutes; let rest for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, cover the reserved sprout leaves with just-boiled water, let sit for a few minutes; drain well. Put a large platter on top of the rice, then quickly and confidently flip the dish over (or simply serve scooped out if you’re not feeling brave!). Decorate scattered with the reserved toppings – including the sprout leaves and tahini sauce. For more festive recipe inspiration and seasonal advice, visit www.Dobbies.com

Christmas Pudding Cheesecake “Cross a Christmas pudding with a cheesecake and what do you get? A fantastic alternative festive dessert”
Ingredients
For the base 200g ginger nut biscuits, crushed 30g light muscovado sugar 1 tsp flaky sea salt 110g unsalted butter, melted For the filling 240g Christmas pudding 30ml brandy 30ml stout 1 orange, zested 2 x 280g tubs full-fat cream cheese 300ml pot double cream 200g light muscovado sugar 2 vanilla pods, split and seeds scraped To decorate 2 clementines light muscovado sugar, for sprinkling
Method To make the base, mix the gingernuts and sugar in a large bowl and sprinkle in the flaky salt. Pour in the melted butter and mix with a wooden spoon to form a biscuit crumb-like mixture. Press into a 20cm round springform cake tin, spreading the mixture in an even layer to the corners. Chill in the fridge for 30 mins until set. Put the Christmas pudding, brandy, stout and orange zest in a blender, and whizz to a purée. Using an electric hand whisk, beat the cream cheese with the double cream, sugar and vanilla seeds, then fold through the purée. Spread the mixture over the biscuit base and leave to chill in the fridge overnight. The next day, peel the clementines, slice into rounds and place on a baking tray. Sticky Orange & Marsala Pudding Ingredients
“This syrupy twist on Christmas pudding takes no time to prepare and can be steamed or madein the microwave”..
3 tbsp golden syrup 2 clementine’s or satsumas, thinly sliced 175g butter 175g golden caster sugar 3 eggs, beaten 85g self-raising flour 85g fresh white breadcrumbs Grated fresh nutmeg (about ¼ tsp) 2 tbsp marsala Zest 1 large orange 200g mixed dried fruit Handful glacé cherries, halved For the syrupy sauce 5 tbsp golden syrup Zest 1 orange 3 tbsp madeira
Method Butter the inside of a 1.2-litre pudding basin. If you’re steaming the pudding on the hob, boil the kettle and have a large saucepan with a lid and a heatproof saucer ready. Cut a sheet of foil and greaseproof paper, both about 30cm long, and butter the greaseproof. Spoon 3 tbsp syrup into the bottom of the basin. Lay 5 slices of clementine or satsuma in the bottom, overlapping like petals. In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar until creamy, then add eggs gradually, beating all the while, until light and fluffy. Add a spoonful of flour if the mix starts to split. Tip in the breadcrumbs and the rest of the flour, fold until combined, then add all remaining ingredients and fold again. Spoon mix on top of the fruit slices. Add remaining slices of clementine or satsuma against the side of the bowl as you go. To cook on the hob, cover with greaseproof and foil and steam for 1½ hrs (see Know-how, below). To microwave, loosely cover with cling film, pierce once, then cook on Medium for 12 mins. To check it’s done, poke a skewer into the pudding; it should come out clean. Make the syrup by heating the ingredients in a small pan. When the pudding is ready, turn out and serve drenched with syrup, or leave to cool and chill for up to 3 days. To reheat, re-cover with foil and greaseproof and steam for 30 mins, or cover with cling film and microwave on Medium for 5 mins until hot. Reheat sauce in the microwave or in a pan. Milton Keynes Theatre announce Panto and Massive NHS Ticket Giveaway! Don't get caught snoozing this Christmas…a star cast heads to Milton Keynes Theatre with the unmissable Sleeping Beauty, thanks to support from The National Lottery!
Created especially for 2020 by Qdos Entertainment, the socially-distanced production of Sleeping Beauty will be packed full of comedy routines, audience-safe participation and all the unmissable magic that Milton Keynes Theatre audiences have come to expect from their annual festive pantomime.
Lee Mead makes his royal return to Milton Keynes after entertaining audiences last year as the loveable hero, Aladdin. This year, the Holby City star swaps his scrubs for something a little more regal as The Prince. Joining him will be screen and stage star Claire Sweeney in the role of the evil Carabosse, along with Hearsay’s Suzanne Shaw as The Enchantress. Starring as Princess Beauty’s hilarious best friend Muddles is comedian and magician Pete Firman.
Legends of comedy, Allan Stewart and Andy Gray, will be swapping their usual pantomime home in Edinburgh for Milton Keynes as The King and Queen. Completing the cast will be Will Jennings as Slimeball, and Tegan Bannister returns to Milton Keynes as Princess Beauty, following her performance last year as Princess Jasmine. The production is able to go ahead thanks to the support of The National Lottery, giving thousands of theatregoers in each city and across the country the chance to enjoy socially distanced pantomimes this
Christmas. This initiative between The National Lottery and Qdos Entertainment is providing financial support for theatres to stage socially distanced live pantomimes making it viable for venues to open their doors to the general public, generating vital income for the theatre and helping to restore jobs whilst also providing much needed cheer.
Emma Sullivan, Theatre Director of Milton Keynes Theatre said ‘We are totally overjoyed to be opening our doors again for a fantastic family pantomime! With thanks to Qdos and The National Lottery we will be able to host an unforgettable festive experience with all the laughs and thrills you would expect, while making sure the theatre is absolutely safe for our audiences.
To express our gratitude to the incredible NHS workers, we will also be inviting them and their loved ones to the first performance free of charge. This year, we hope to give Milton Keynes a much-needed Christmas to remember!’ NHS workers just need to head to healthservicediscounts.com and register for the ballot. Sleeping Beauty will run from Saturday, December 19 2020 to Sunday, January 10 2021. For tickets, visit www.ATGTICKETS.COM/MiltonKeynes / Box Office: 0844 871 7615.

Fry’s Footie Corner 2020, it is certainly a year that I don’t think any of us will ever forget. It has been one challenge after another. I have worked in football all of my life and without a shadow of a doubt, there has not been as many downs as we have experienced than in this year.
At Peterborough United, we thought that the way last season ended would be our biggest challenge but playing football in front of no crowds with no bailout (at the time of writing), coupled with being knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup in front of the TV cameras by non-league Chorley has left us picking ourselves up off the canvas once again. Covid-19 has decimated families, it has decimated communities and it has left a trail of destruction across the business world and football, whilst many might not feel too much sympathy, is a business. At the highest level, yes, money has been spent in record amounts once again, but below the surface, clubs are living from hand to mouth and not just monthly, but daily.
Is there light at the end of the tunnel? If it is, it’s a very faint light. Yes, we might have been given the go ahead to have up to 2,000 supporters for our games as we fall into Tier 2, but that won’t make us any money, in fact, it will probably end up costing us as we have to pay for stewards and all that is required to put the match on safely.
The vaccines that have been developed across the world are our saviour and we need them to start getting back to normality. I for one cannot wait.
On the football front, it has been interesting listening to the debate about five substitutions at the highest level. In the EFL, teams quite rightly voted for it. This is a year like no other, so you must make concessions and protect your players. I think in the Premier League it needs to happen too. Jurgen Klopp has been talking about it regularly as he has suffered, like others, with muscle injuries because of the tough schedule. That tough schedule by the way is across all of the leagues. The international break was a little baffling in these times. I think there could have been concessions made there certainly with pointless friendly fixtures. As long as it is consistent across the board, they should have all been postponed and just played the competitive games. I hope you’re all safe reading this and you manage to have a Happy Christmas!
