Learning to

Drop the Drama

may018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/04/2018 19:57 Page 11

We probably can all identify some people we know who have lives that are always full of ‘drama’. But is it that their lives are very different? Often not. The nature of life as humans and in our society is that things happen, some of which are beyond our control and for everyone some ‘stuff’ happens that simply isn’t fair. In essence no one can control every aspect of their lives and awful things do sometimes happen and let’s be honest some of those things are dramatic and can be tough to deal with. At those times we need to draw deep on our inner strength and the support of family and friends around us. But the drama that can be damaging is the drama where people make a BIG fuss over things unnecessarily. Or the drama that can be caused by gossip or back biting, or people spreading rumours. Do any of us really have time for that? I suspect not as it is a complete waste of our valuable time and energy. I accept there are times when stress and conflict can’t be avoided but there may be plenty of other times when we are drawn into it and it is all unnecessary. Life is short. I have no time for drama Caroline Manzo

So how can we get rid of unnecessary conflict, stress, tension or plain old bad feeling? Which can take a lot of energy to deal with and can have a very negative impact on our relationships and our lives. Here are a few tips to help next time you are faced with having to deal with drama.

Check Your Interpretation Very often something might happen but what causes the problem is the interpretation. Someone might say something and people can spend ages analysing what was said or why or why in that way. But actually the truth is if you imply intention or add your own interpretation to events you can get it wrong. So the safest is to take things at face value and make a conscious decision, if you must interpret things, to be positive in that. It’s a giving the benefit of the doubt approach that can save an awful lot of drama.

Get rid of gossip Many of us love to chat, but that is not the same as gossip. People have different ways of defining gossip. The online dictionary defines it as “Casual or unconstrained conversation or reports about other people, typically involving details that are not confirmed as true.”

It can easily be a bit like Chinese whispers with stories getting exaggerated or twisted with every repetition. So be careful what you believe unless you are hearing from the proverbial horses mouth and certainly don’t start responding until you have had the chance to have some real communication.

Give the drama Queens (or Kings) a wide berth We probably all know some people who seem to attract drama or even thrive on it. Well that is their choice but if it is something that makes you feel uncomfortable then it may be that a good choice for you is to give them a wide berth. Give yourself permission to either choose how much you associate with the drama Kings and Queens of life or permission to stay away from the drama they might seek to bring into your life. Be real in your communication Sometimes we can get upset about things when we haven’t actually been real in our own communication about our feelings or emotions. We can get upset when people haven’t done things we expect but actually we might not even have asked them, we simply expect them to know. Or we imply things or drop hints expecting people to pick them up. Perhaps we might make sarcastic comments in the hope of conveying a message but actually it is far more effective to actually communicate what we actually think and feel and it can avoid some drama.

Think before reacting We can never totally control what happens to us but we can control how we respond to the events and people around us. That doesn’t mean it is easy but one way to manage that is to try to allow time to consider our response. If we react in the heat of the moment we are very likely to make matters worse or at least give ourselves more difficulty to deal with. Not responding instantly gives us time to consider our response AND check where it stems from. It can be easy for example if faced with an aggressive or hurtful comment to snap back but we all know that can escalate situations pretty quickly By taking a bit of time we can consider our response and remind ourselves we have nothing to prove - which might avoid a whole lot of drama. If you need some support to drop the drama or find other ways to live a life that is happier and more fulfilled then get in touch www.attunededucation.com www.attunedsuccess.co.uk..

Friends of 5th Avenue Last month saw Kerry Cash from 5th Avenue Hair and Beauty Spa in Bedford host her fabulous ‘Friends of 5th Avenue Dinner’ at The Embankment in Bedford. Taking place every three months it’s a fun filled evening all about getting together over great food, whilst learning about and experiencing the treatments and products that are on offer from 5th Avenue. After enjoying a welcoming glass of fizz, and a little mingling with other guests it was time to have a little fun and compare Decleor products against similar Elemis products and decide what one we preferred by scoring them out of ten. Great fun and a real talking point and after rubbing in so many different creams and lotions the added bonus of soft, smooth and silky skin. Midway through it was time to stop and enjoy some delicious food from The Embankment’s menu of fresh seasonal dishes, before taking part in a quiz and FREE raffle where as well as winning some products and treatments from 5th Avenue, you could also win the pretty flower arrangements on the tables that were donated by Fleurette Florist of Bedford. These evenings are a great way to make new friends and enjoy some good food all whilst finding out about the products and treatments 5th Avenue Hair and Beauty Spa offer along with exclusive discounts on these treatments and products. The next “Friends of 5th Avenue Dinner takes place on Tuesday 10th July and begins at 7.30pm. You don’t have to be a client to attend, and tickets are priced at £25pp and include a glass of prosecco on arrival, a two course meal, a free raffle ticket and lots of fun. 5th Avenue Hair and Beauty Spa is open 6 days a week including Sunday and late night until 9pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and until 8pm on a Friday. www.5thavenuespa.co.uk

happn upon a Date

may018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/04/2018 19:58 Page 15

Are you excited to hear from this person? Don’t force interactions if the spark isn’t there, feeling comfortable with the person you are about to meet means you will feel less anxious. Be mindful of butterflies (the good kind), its totally natural to feel nervous, but try to embrace the feeling.

Put your detective hat on Don’t worry, we don’t need to find out their shoe size, address and check out all their exes on Facebook, but a little insight into their likes and dislikes is key before any date. It is incredibly important to find out your partner’s interests and helps to avoid the nerve-wracking silences and repetitive conversation. Be comfortable in your environment A good rule of thumb is to make sure the place you are going to is comfortable and on familiar ground. You’ll feel far more relaxed if you’re in a place that puts you at ease and allows you to chat more freely. It’s ok to have a few drinks to help with the nerves but try to not drink too much either. If you’re worried about not having enough to say, try a date where there is an activity involved. This allows you to help the conversation along a little before it starts to flow naturally. Just be patient and find enjoyment in the situation, it will automatically lower any stress levels. If it gets too awkward, don’t forget to laugh it off and try to learn from the experience.

Earlier is better A little trick we learned along the way is to make the date earlier in the week. This trick shifts the pressure off the weekend where the expectations reach peak, no need to feel this pressure on a first date. Rather than a big dinner or drinks it’s simpler to meet for a coffee mid-week or an after work drink. This will create a comfortable space for you both and will be easier to escape should the things do south.

Dating can be a stress filled minefield which can be tricky to navigate but it also can be an amazing experience which leads to a great night filled with fun and romance. A lot of the time the outcome of a date can depend on the mind-set and attitudes of the individuals involved. We caught up with dating app happn’s trends expert, Claire Certain, who shares her top 5 tips on how to ensure dating is an exciting and stress free experience.

Trust your instincts Chances are, by the time you arrange a date, you have already spoken to the other person, whether its texting or talking on the phone. It is good to listen to your gut, does the conversation flow well enough to last the whole dinner?

Accept rejection Being a part of the dating scene makes rejection unavoidable. Chances are, you will meet people after a few dates who will simply not be that into you and vice versa. This is perfectly ok! It sucks, but it’s always worth remembering that you are in control of how it will affect you. Avoid dwelling on bad dates, instead try to learn from the experience. Keep your expectations in check and understand that a rejection doesn’t mean you are not good enough, it just means you and your date are not suitable for each other. When you have the right attitude, you’ll feel less stressed, be able to wave off rejections, and find a suitable partner that is truly for you.

About happn happn is the first mobile dating app to use real-time geolocation to help you discover people you’ve crossed paths with in real life. Every time you cross paths with another happn user, his or her profile appears on your app. The app currently has 47 million users around the world and operates in 50 major cities spread across 40 countries. happn is available to download for free via the App Store, Play Store and Windows Store. www.happn.com/en

Midlife Madness Hotel Hassles Let me state immediately that I love hotels, I love staying away, holidays, travelling and pretty much everything associated with it. Luckily I not only get to holiday quite a bit, but work also takes me to different parts of the country so overnight stays are fairly common place. I have a long list of things I love about hotels, crisp sheets, mini bars, great views, ‘full on’ enormous breakfasts that you feel duty bound to eat (let’s face it you’ve paid for it so guilt has gone out of the window) and a chance to indulge one of my favourite pastimes - people watching.

different ways. Last time I had to enlist the help of some other guest to get into my room because of course I was on the 22nd floor in the room furthest from the lift (I think it’s a law that when there is a problem you are in the room furthest away from reception). Even if you manage to use the card effectively it seems they can easily be demagnetised or whatever by phones! Well of course no one would have one of those! Phone cases even come with helpful card storage pockets - it’s like a blooming conspiracy.

As the title suggests there are however a few things about hotels that I find a bit of a hassle. First there’s the check in and if they get it right this can be a nice procedure, they tell you about the place make you feel welcome and I suppose a bit special. That’s when its good, but sad to say, in my experience it isn’t always that way and sometimes I’ve felt a bit like an irritation, imposter or even an idiot, when ‘welcomed’ by a receptionist who clearly has other places to be, people to see or things to do, that are much more important than little ole me, well I am just the paying guest!!

Assuming that you do actually get into your room, after a lie down to recover from the exertion of getting past reception and into your room, which can feel worse than a burglar breaking and entering (I suspect - not ever having done that!) you may well want a shower.

Then there are the room keys! Oh my goodness what is wrong with a good old key? I know where I am with a key - it has a handle and even I find it hard to confuse that and the ‘business end’. But now we have key cards! While I can handle most cards, credit cards are practically my best friend, library cards (not so much as I always seem to forget that I borrowed books) ID cards and discount cards are all no problem! But hotel door key cards nightmare. After all, they are rectangular, so surely there are a limited number of ways you can approach it - but there are so many different ‘pads’ you can slide or tap or insert the said card in - apparently in a thousand

All I can say is beware! I have had so many freezing cold showers, scalding hot showers, stood for an hour under a trickle or felt half drowned by a powerful deluge I can’t reduce or stood naked and frozen while waiting for it to warm up, cool down or respond to my latest dial twist, that I do a very thorough shower reconnaissance before I even consider taking my clothes off! I have discovered there is an almost infinite variety of ways to push, pull or twist the levers, knobs switches, dials or taps. Thankfully if I’m with my mechanically minded engineer of a husband he can work it out. Left to my own devices however it’s a different story. I have even had to resort to ringing down to reception - yes I did feel like an idiot, and when they arrived I found it hard to rock the whole helpless damsel in towel look - I know it works in the movies but with the rocketing past midlife lady in room 2207, it was simply not a good look!

Springtime Dining at

The World’s End Market

may018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/04/2018 20:02 Page 39

Last month saw us indulging in the new spring menu at The World’s End Market restaurant in Chelsea. Located on the Kings Road in a stunning multi-tiered Grade II listed establishment. The ground floor of the World’s End Market houses a 70cover restaurant, stripped back and uncomplicated in design; Reclaimed wooden crates have been re worked to create the woodwork on the walls and bar. Continuing the theme of reclaimed materials even some of the Harry Potter Hogwarts set, predominantly and impressive doorframe, has been incorporated into the design. This Grade II listed building took over 20 months to restore. Flooded with natural light, this high-ceilinged dining area is evocative of a 1930s canteen, and was the perfect place for a press lunch hosted by JPR Media Group for this year’s Grand Prix Ball 2018. Alongside other media we were joined by the original Stig, Perry McCarthy and Jonny Dodge the founder and CEO of GP Management, hosts of the Grand Prix Ball 2018. Cocktails were served from the old fashioned bar area where the barman did an impressive Tom Cruise impression, and produced a just as impressive delicious tasting cocktail, an ‘Aviation Lesson’ a refreshing twist on an absolute classic, Rhubarb infused Tanqueray Gin, Maraschino Liqueur, Violette Liqueur and Perrier Jouet Champagne, perfect to whet our palettes for the new springtime lunch menu. For starters, you can enjoy a super quinoa salad with pumpkin seeds, pomegranate, rocket, sweet pepper and lime dressing a rainbow of colours exploding with different flavours and an ever so slight kick. For those looking for fresh fish the green gazpacho with salmon tartare is just perfect, delicately presented, fresh and a real treat to the tastebuds. The pan-fried chicken liver with caramelised apple and fried sage was cooked to perfection, soft and tender and literally melted in the mouth and the beef Carpaccio with mixed salad and Parmesan dressing was an amalgamation of different tastes and textures. Mains are just as impressive with a baked sea bream, cherry tomato sauce and dilled rice, soft and flavoursome and perfect for pescatarians. A spicy chermoula chicken with Israeli couscous brings a touch of the Middle East to Chelsea. The Asian style grilled beef with rice noodle salad is a lighter dish but no less tasty, and is perfect when accompanied with the potato gnocchi, sun blushed tomatoes, green beans & pesto sauce. And the fête d accomplice if you’re a steak lover is the Halal certified Chuleta de Vaca Cow, Bone-in Rib Eye Steak. Which is cooked to perfection by in house chef Tony Sanders. To satisfy your sweet tooth cravings is dessert a homely selection of chocolate mousse, carrot & orange cake and ice cream. The World’s End Market boasts that they serve the world’s best steak, finest seafood and handcrafted cocktails, a bold statement, but one I totally agree with. Le Rustique Camembert & Ras el Hanout Roasted Stuffed Squash “This makes a delightful, light yet tasty treat this spring”

Ingredients

1 large butternut squash 1 tbsp Ras el Hanout Olive oil 1 young Le Rustique Camembert 250g (rind off) 400g spinach 1 tbsp cumin 1 tbsp nutmeg Pinch of sea salt Cracked black pepper Garnish: fresh rocket and tomato salad

Method

Preheat oven to 160°C/140°C F/Gas Mark 3 Half the butternut squash and scoop out the seeds. Roast the seeds with some olive oil in the oven for 10 minutes until crispy, then leave aside. Score the butternut in a ‘criss cross’ pattern, drizzle with a good quality olive oil, gently rub in the Ras el Hanout and season. Bake for 50 minutes or until the squash is soft and cooked through Prepare the filling - take the rind off the Le Rustique Camembert and dice into chunks. This is easier when it has been chilled. Steam the spinach and when cooked, squeeze out any water and in a bowl mix with the cheese, cumin, nutmeg and season well to taste. Mix it well When the butternut squash is cooked, take out of the oven and fill with the spinach mix Sprinkle with the seeds and place back in the oven for another 5 – 10 minutes until the spinach is warmed through Serve on a large sharing board in the middle of the table and enjoy with a delicious fresh rocket and tomato salad

Pea and Marinated Cherry Tomatoes Risotto “Fresh, honest, seasonal ingredients and no fuss. A simple yet delicious dish, perfect for alfresco dining with family or friends”

Ingredients

280 g of Riso Gallo Carnaroli rice 40 g of grated Grana Padano 50 g of onion (finely chopped) 25 g of unsalted butter 1 litre of vegetable or chicken stock 200 ml of dry white wine 160 g of green peas (off the pod or frozen) 2 tbsp. of extra virgin olive oil 1 small punnet of pea shoots as garnish 4 anchovies cut in segments 200 g of cherry tomatoes 1 lemon zest 1 orange zest 2 tbsp. of balsamic vinegar 1 small bunch of thyme I small bunch of basil 1 garlic clove (optional) Salt and pepper (to taste) Salted “hard” ricotta (to taste)

Method

Blanch the peas in salted boiling water for 1 minute and cool them down immediately in iced water to retain the green colour. Set aside half of them and leave whole for the risotto. Use the remaining peas to create a puree to enhance the flavour of your risotto. Sweat 30 g of onion in a casserole with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt. Add the peas, a glass of water and blend it until smooth. Prepare the cherry tomatoes - to peel the cherry tomatoes lightly score them with a paring knife on one side and blanch them very quickly in boiling water. Cool them with ice. Peel and dress with olive oil, orange and lemon zest, balsamic vinegar, a few thyme and basil leafs, 1 garlic clove and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and let them marinate for a few minutes. Bake in a small tray at 150° C for about 7 minutes until glazed by the balsamic marinade. Don’t let the balsamic burn on the sides of the tray, which can happen if it is too large. Gently fry the remaining chopped onion in a small casserole with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of salt for about 10-15 minutes on low heat, until well golden and caramelised. Keep to one side. In a separate large casserole, start to roast the rice on low heat with a pinch of salt, without adding oil or fat. In this way, the heat reaches the core of each rice grain resulting in more uniform al dente rice. Keep stirring the rice, so the rice doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan or burn. When the rice is very hot, pour half of the wine in. Let the alcohol evaporate, set the cooking time to 15 minutes and add the simmering stock a ladle at a time, little by little. Stir the rice occasionally, and keep cooking. Halfway through the cooking, add the onion to the rice and the pea puree. Once the time is up, add the whole peas, taste the risotto and if you’re happy with the texture, remove it from the heat. The next step is called “mantecatura” – with the right movements you can make the risotto creamier and increase its natural ooziness. Add the Grana Padano and butter to the rice. Stir with energy to incorporate extra air. Add the remaining wine and keep stirring until the risotto is nice and creamy. Season to taste. Plate the hot risotto straight away and top with the glazed cherry tomatoes, the anchovies and pea shoots as garnish. Shave over a bit of salted ricotta if you’d like and add an extra drizzle of balsamic. Recipe by Danilo Cortellini (Italian Embassy Chef)

Rhubarb and Ginger Cheesecake

“This delicious cheesecake makes a wonderful dessert your guests will love” Ingredients 225g plain flour 1/2tsp salt 110g chilled butter, cut into pieces 2tsp caster sugar 1 egg yolk Chilled water, to mix Filling: 300g low fat soft cheese 50g caster sugar 1tsp vanilla extract 300ml single cream 2 large eggs Icing sugar, for sprinkling Topping: 30g butter 30g caster sugar 1 South African apple, cored and thinly sliced 1 South African pear, cored and thinly sliced Generous pinch of sea salt

Method

Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas Mark 6. Sift the flour and salt together. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Add just enough chilled water to make a smooth (but not sticky) dough. Wrap and chill for 10-15 minutes. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 25cm flan ring or dish. Line with baking paper and baking beans or crumpled foil. Bake blind (i.e. without a filling) for 10 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 180°C/Fan 160°C/Gas Mark 4. Beat together the low fat soft cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, single cream and eggs. Remove the baking paper and beans or foil from the pastry case. Pour in the filling and bake for 25-30 minutes, until set. Cool. For the topping, melt the butter in a frying pan and add the caster sugar, cooking for a few moments to dissolve it. Add the apple and pear slices and cook, stirring occasionally, for 4-5 minutes, until tender and beginning to caramelise. Add the sea salt, cool slightly, then spoon on top of the tart. Cook’s tip: Take a shortcut by using a pre-baked pastry case. Recipe from: South African Fruit (www.beautifulcountrybeautifulfruit.com)

Magical Mischievous Miraculous Matilda

W

inner of over 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, Matilda The Musical is coming to Milton Keynes Theatre this June and we can’t wait.

Matilda The Musical tells the story of an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.

The New York production of Matilda The Musical opened in April 2013 at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre and was celebrated on 10 “Top Ten” lists for 2013, including TIME Magazine’s #1 Show of the Year.

The title role will be shared by Annalise Bradbury, Lara Cohen, Poppy Jones and Nicola Turner.

Matilda The Musical has now been seen by more than 7.7 million people worldwide. Having swept the board at the 2012 Olivier Awards, with a record-breaking seven awards, and winning four Tony Awards and a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre for the four girls sharing the title role on Broadway, Matilda The Musical has now played in over 60 cities and has played more than 5500 performances worldwide. Matilda The Musical is produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company with André Ptaszynski and Denise Wood as Executive Producers. The production was developed with the support of Jeanie O’Hare and the RSC Literary Department and is one of the most successful British musicals of modern times, and entertains audiences both old and young.

Craige Els will reprise the role of Miss Trunchbull, having played her in the West End for three years between 2014 and 2017. He will be joined by Carly Thoms as Miss Honey and Sebastien Torkia as Mr Wormwood as well as former West End cast-mate Rebecca Thornhill as Mrs Wormwood. Featuring exceptional scenic design, fantastic choreography and staging and an incredible cast of young performers, Matilda the Musical will inspire audiences of all ages. The timeless story of a small girl's determination to challenge those above her for the greater good, combined with Roald Dahl's signature wit and naughtiness, makes this an unforgettable West End musical. Matilda runs from Tuesday 5th – Saturday 30th June. Tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com

Fry’s Footie Corner

I always like this time of the year, not least because the transfer window opens, but also because the excitement of the play-offs has arrived. I cannot imagine what the football season would be like without this knockout little competition. It keeps the season alive knowing that so many teams can be fighting for promotion. In the Championship, the play-off final is literally worth over £100 million to the winner. From gate receipts to the TV revenue from Premier League football, it is the richest game in the world and with so many big teams fighting for the prize, picking a winner is so hard to predict. It is the same in League One, but I would feel incredibly sorry for Shrewsbury Town if they are not successful after pushing big-spending Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic all the way for the automatic promotion slots. Paul Hurst has done such a wonderful job at the club against all the odds and it would be great to see them successful at Wembley, particularly after missing out to Lincoln City in the Checkatrade Trophy final last month. In terms of League Two, three teams go up automatically and it is amazing to see Accrington Stanley one of those sides. With one of the smallest budgets and certainly the

smallest crowds, John Coleman has worked a miracle to get them into League One. Luton Town have finally secured their passage back into League One and with a huge fan base, we look forward to welcoming them to the ABAX Stadium next season. I hope that Wycombe Wanderers also make it – Craig MackailSmith has formed a really good partnership with Adebayo Akinfenwa at the Chairboys and they are a great side to watch. In the National League, it is Macclesfield Town that secured the one automatic promotion spot with Tranmere Rovers the favourites to come up through the play-offs. Torquay United have shown how hard that league is though, they were relegated to National League South last month – a sad story indeed. Enjoy the football and I will be back next month with my World Cup predictions!

Copenhagen

Comfort, Cuisine and Culture in

With everything from culture, cycling, and castles to award-winning cuisine – it’s no wonder Copenhagen is said the be the happiest city in the world, and being only a couple of hours from the UK, we decided to hop on a plane for a mini break and find out for ourselves what this great city has to offer. We were staying at The Andersen Hotel, a boutique hotel located in Vesterbro in the heart of Copenhagen; just a few minutes walk from the central train station. Vesterbro, is an eclectic mix of designer boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and bars and is the perfect base for exploring, whether on foot, bike (Copenhagen has one of the world's most dedicated bike cultures. In fact, the city has more bicycles than people) or public transport, (make the most out of your trip and get a Copenhagen Card, this gives you free admission to over 80 attractions, free transport on trains, metro and buses in the Copenhagen region and discounts in shops, bars and restaurants).

Having resisted the urge to pop into the patisserie full of the most delicious looking cakes, we stepped off the street into the lobby lounge of The Andersen Hotel. Feeling instantly warm and welcoming, the quirky modern fire burning away against a trendy colour palette of purple’s and pinks, immediately created a calming atmosphere. Large clear shaped plastic chairs with colourful cushions, are just crying out for you to sit down, grab a coffee (these are complimentary 24 hours) or something a little stronger from the honesty bar, sit back, relax, read the papers, people watch or indulge in a game of chess with one of the giant resident Anderson Teddies. It’s not just the decor that makes you feel welcome, it’s also the staff who are friendly, knowledgeable and have an above and beyond attitude. The hotel houses 69 rooms and suites all uniquely decorated with feature wallpaper, cushions and curtains by international brand Designers Guild.

There are three different colour schemes – Princess (a stunning combination of vibrant purple and striking fuchsia providing an elegant, yet warm atmosphere). Mermaid, (shades of vivid turquoise and lime reflect the soothing elements of water) and Emperor, (calming blue and rich magenta add a touch of almost regal luxury) and then there’s the different room types there’s no classic or deluxe here it’s Cool, Brilliant, Wonderful and Amazing. We were lucky enough to be staying in an ‘Amazing’ Junior suite decorated in the Princess designs of fuchsia and pinks. A feature wall lined with fuchsia wallpaper was the perfect backdrop for the white linen on the bed and pretty floral cushions accessorised perfectly. A large sitting area with a magenta velvet sofa and swivel chair, were both stylish and comfy and the neutral floor was accessorised with a large fluffy fuchsia rug. Soft lighting around the room, fast internet connection, flat screen TV and a nespresso coffee machine were the finishing touches that created a luxurious, stylish look. Clean white brick shaped tiles adorned the bathroom walls, Molten Brown toiletries sat upon the shelf and a large bath with over shower even offered you, your own quirky Andersen rubber duck which you are free to take home as a souvenir. There was just time to quickly unpack before heading back down to the lobby lounge for wine hour! A relaxing hour (5pm – 6pm) to enjoy a complimentary glass or two of wine, whilst unwinding in the lobby lounge, planning your next day, chilling or chatting with other guests. Although the hotel has a restaurant for you to enjoy breakfast, it doesn’t serve any other meals, which is just perfect for all the foodies amongst us who want to explore the culinary delights of Copenhagen, of which there are many. Set in one of Copenhagen's most beautiful royal gardens is Mielcke & Hurtigkarl restaurant. The Royal Danish Horticultural Garden Society provides a stunning backdrop for some innovative food and I would say it’s worth flying to Copenhagen just to experience the delights that are on offer here. A beautifully lit tree lined avenue leads us to the gates with lanterns lighting the way to the restaurants entrance. An enormous Pavilion, with botanical murals a large solitary tree in the middle of the room, glittering crystals shining above and elegant gold chandeliers

hanging from the high ceilings, all come together to create the perfect atmosphere to enjoy an amazing dining experience. A welcome glass of Sousa champagne set us up for what was going to be a taste sensation extraordinaire. Mixing traditional Scandinavian ingredients together to create some of the finest dishes you’ve ever tasted. Dishes included langoustine in a shiso and lime dressing, scallops served with green strawberries and presented on a bed of sea shells, fresh and delicate oysters, and lemon sole with kombu and a razor thin slice of chicken skin, The textures, tastes and presentation of all these dishes are categorized as a work of art in all forms, and the accompanying wines made sure the whole food flight was one of true indulgent enjoyment. Staff were knowledgeable, and friendly and explained each dish before leaving you to savour the delights on your plate. The delicate oxtail accompanied with a plum sauce was a particular favourite and the wild duck, smoked goose breast and salted pancetta slices were so tender they literally melted in the mouth, it’s no surprise the meat is so fresh as the chef hunts most of it himself. Following these savoury dishes, the desserts followed, offering the same high standards of taste sensations on the palette.

to our suite for a restful nights sleep. Next morning breakfast is served, just off the lobby in the dining area that’s hidden behind a curtain in the day. The same pink and purple theme follows through into and a buffet of cold meat and fish, pastries, salads, fruit, breads and eggs are all there for you to help yourself to. There’s so much to see and do in Copenhagen if you’re unsure just ask the staff and they are more than happy to advise you. We visited some fabulous places including the famous “The Little Mermaid” an amazing bronze statue inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about a mermaid who gives up everything to be united with a young, handsome prince on land. The National Aquarium (included in your Copenhagen Card), The idea is to give visitors a feeling of being under water and is Northern Europe’s largest Aquarium There are five sections to visit including Ocean tank and The Coral reef, offering visitors a unique experience. Nyhavn (New Harbour) is another must, this 17th century port is lined with beautiful old houses that have been renovated and house cafes, bars and restaurants. The oldest house here dates back to 1681, and the famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Anderson lived at number 20. In the summer you can sit outside on the harbour with a drink and watch the world and the boats go by, and in the colder months you can sit in one of the many restaurants in front of a roaring fire with a hot bowl of soup and look out over the picturesque harbour as we did.

The aesthetics of the dishes, both in colour and style is a real testament to the individuality of the chef here, who’s pleasure comes from creating dishes that will leave you in awe of the next journey to hit your palette.

Taj Exotica Resort & Spa with

First luxury resort opens on India’s untouched beach destination Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Andamans, is India’s newest beach destination. Set in relatively undiscovered Havelock Islands, the resort is located on the crescent shaped Radhanagar Beach, reputed to be one of the best beaches in Asia. Taj has taken great care to construct a 72 villa worldclass resort in 46 acres of forest and mangroves while preserving the fragile eco-system of the island. Not a single tree has been felled during the construction of the 72 beach villas that pay homage to the style of the indigenous Jarawa tribe’s

pitch-roof stilted huts. The lobby built on stilts will greet guests to spectacular beach views and a 50metre infinity swimming pool. Given its commitment to the region, Taj has set up an onsite bottling plant eliminating the use of plastic bottles, a waste disposal system- converting wet waste to gas and compost and a sanitation treatment plant to limit its carbon footprint. The resort is home to three restaurants, which each tell the history of the island’s inhabitants – including the Indian freedom fighters incarcerated by the British in the 19th Century in the notorious Cellular Jail and the brief occupation

of the Japanese during World War II. The Chefs at Taj Exotica have researched the culinary legacy of time-honoured recipes from each community to showcase a melting pot of cultures. While The Settlers offer dishes inspired by the settlers who’ve made the Andamans their home in a fine dining context, Shoreline presents coastal curries from The Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal. The Turtle House will offer global grills including Indian, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisine and a selection of Taj signature dishes curated from the chefs at the leading Taj Hotels. An in-house Naturalist will help navigate the exotic island with experiences ranging from snorkelling, scuba diving and night-time kayaking through the mangroves with its fascinating nocturnal world of bioluminescence-phytoplankton. Located 69 km from Port Blair’s Veer Savarkar International Airport, Radhanagar beach on Havelock Island is accessible by air and a 150-minute ferry ride followed by a 30 minute drive to the resort. The expanded network of flights from Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad make it easy to reach from key cities across India. History, Elegance and Style at St Ermin’s Hotel

estled at the end of a tree-lined courtyard in the heart of Westminster, is St. Ermin’s an independent fourstar deluxe hotel. It’s hard to imagine that this luxury hotel is just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of central London and just a stones throw from Buckingham Palace. Add to that its captivating history with spies, secret tunnels and espionage and you can see why this hotel sets itself apart from others in the Capital.

Walking through the revolving doors into a large elegant lobby, the attention to detail is evident everywhere you look, from the opulent chandeliers, intricate plasterwork and original mosaic tiled floor, to the awe inspiring theatrical grand staircase, the legacy of Victorian theatre designer J.P Briggs, this hotel is an instagrammable dream. As we wait for the lift to take us to our room, there’s an original framed silk scarf hanging on the wall (SOE agents’ printed secret coded messages on pieces of silk and passed it to each other), the wartime spy connection is everywhere, if only the walls could talk what stories would they tell. The hotel has 331 spacious rooms including 41 suites, all are individual in their shape, size and structure but all draw upon worldwide, textural influences to convey a real sense of relaxation and calm. Our room, a King bed suite with an expansive bedroom, separate lounge and not one but two bathrooms (perfect,

I could spend as long as I wanted pampering myself with the luxurious White Company toiletries). A mix of neutrals in the lounge area provides the perfect backdrop to dark wood furniture and a deep red sofa and armchair, and the bedroom palette of greens and reds is the perfect ambience for lying down and doing nothing. Unfortunately that was not to be as the lure of sitting in front of the roaring fire in the Caxton Bar sipping a G&T was too much, the warm décor in the bar creates a sense of calm and you can’t help but let your mind wander to days gone by when spies would meet in this very bar passing secrets between each other. There was certainly no spying going on today though, well only if you count on the array of drinks and cocktails the bar has to offer. All too soon its time to head through the bar into the Caxton Grill restaurant for dinner, offering guests a selection of delicious classics, alongside premium steaks cooked on the Josper Grill (an indoor charcoal oven, cooking meats and fish at very high temperatures to help retain the moisture and the flavour). Seated at our table with a cool glass of wine, we whetted our appetites with some fresh bread with citrus and garlic butter while pursuing the menu before deciding on lobster mousse with poached prawn, puffed cereals & sea herbs and beef Carpaccio served with a basil dressing and smoked almonds, both dishes were beautifully presented, fresh and a real treat to the taste buds.

may018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/04/2018 20:06 Page 67

Organic Scottish salmon and the ultimate fish grill (a platter of fresh fish and shellfish) from the Josper grill was our choice of mains, fresh and cooked to perfection, with an amalgamation of delicious flavours on the palette, sides came in the form of broccoli and almond butter and a St Ermin’s salad. Dessert had a lot to live up to after such a delicious dinner, but it did with artichoke parfait with sweet pickled quince & macadamia nuts and vanilla cheesecake with rhubarb and basil granita. It is evident from the food we were served that Caxton Grill’s dedication to sourcing the freshest seasonal ingredients it can find is definitely true. Time to retire for the night into for a restful nights slumber, before indulging in the delights of breakfast the next morning, setting us up perfectly for a day of shopping and sightseeing. St Ermin’s stylish charm, historic elegance and relaxing environment is just perfect for a stay in the Capital, the only problem is you won’t want to leave. BOOK IT Prices start from £209 per room, per night in a double room and from £459 per room, per night in a suite. *Prices may vary from those quoted. www.sterminshotel.co.uk
