Top Tips on How to Battle Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. One of the most unfortunate things is that it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. As soon as we start worrying that we're going to have a panic attack, our heart races and we feel short of breath. And then we worry more because our heart is racing and we're feeling short of breath. Some people are more prone to anxiety than others. It's possible that this is due to genetics or upbringing, but it's also possible that the differences are just random. If you want to learn how to battle anxiety, you may be able to find different ways that are more effective for you than others. The experts at Forest Healthcare have shared 5 top tips that could help you.

1. Exercise Physical exercise is a great way to help cure your anxiety for many reasons. It helps to take your mind off your worries and focus on the exercise you are doing instead. Exercise effectively reduces stress by increasing the body’s production of endorphins, chemicals that boost mood and act as natural painkillers, and by reducing our stress hormones, such as adrenaline. Finally, exercise increases blood flow to the brain, bringing it more oxygen and nutrients, and potentially helping to offset some of the physical changes caused by stress. 2. Understand your Triggers It is likely that you have a good understanding of what triggers you, but in the same breath you might overlook things that you’ve done well. At the end of each day, write down three things that have stressed you out and three things that you’ve done well. They don’t have to be huge, just things that you’ve noticed throughout the day. Try and do this every day for a week or two. Then look back over the list of things that have gone wrong and identify what triggered your feelings of anxiety. You’ll probably find that most of them fall into a few

broad themes – there may be just one or two main triggers.

3. Stay on Top of your Nutrition We're all prone to mood changes when hunger sets in – whether it's anxious, cranky, lethargic. Keep your blood sugar from dropping by having a quick snack handy for when you need it. These quick snacks are great if you need to feel calm and energised: a handful of almonds or walnuts (high in omega-3 fats), a half cup of berries (blueberries have the highest antioxidant levels) or half an avocado with sea salt sprinkled on top (another great source of healthy fats).

4. Practise Mindfulness It can be very difficult to learn mindfulness, especially if you are used to thinking about the past and future or if you are consumed by worry and stress. To become more mindful, try to learn deep breathing. Deep breathing can help you relax and get out of your head. It can also reduce your blood pressure and heart rate, which will help calm you down when you’re feeling anxious. When you feel yourself getting stressed, take a deep breath by inhaling slowly through your nose while counting to three; hold it for three seconds; then exhale slowly through your mouth while counting to three again. Repeat this until you feel calmer.

5. Get Enough Sleep For many of us, the most challenging part of overcoming anxiety is getting a good night's sleep. This can be due to the racing thoughts, worries and nervous energy that can accompany anxiety conditions. If sleep problems are due to anxiety, making lifestyle changes to reduce worry and stress may help. These changes include avoiding caffeine and alcohol at night and going to bed only when you're sleepy. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is another effective treatment for both anxiety and insomnia. www.foresthc.com

Four Ways Stress Can Affect Your Eye Health Stress is a significant factor in mental health problems including anxiety and depression. It is also linked to physical health problems like heart disease, problems with our immune system, insomnia, digestive problems and perhaps surprisingly eye health.

We spoke to leading eye expert Dr Andy Hepworth from Essilor who shared four ways that stress can affect eyesight and how to reduce its impact. Blurred vision and light sensitivity: Our pupils will naturally dilate in a stressful situation to enhance vision so that threats can be seen clearly. However, high levels of adrenaline can cause pressure on the eyes, resulting in temporary blurred vision. You may also find that your eyes become more sensitive to light, with bright light hurting your eyes and making it harder to see.

Eye strain: Whilst eye strain is more commonly caused by digital screen usage, it can also result from stress. This is because when we are stressed we tense our

muscles – this might lead to headaches, jaw ache from teeth grinding and muscular pain. People with longterm anxiety can suffer from eye strain during the day on a regular basis. Eye twitches: Another temporary sign of stress can be eye twitches. These also occur because of muscle tension, as well as tiredness and will often occur in just one eye. Eye twitches can be extremely irritating and you may feel conscious that other people can see the contraction but they are often something that only you will be aware of and will go away on their own. Dry or watery eyes: There are a number of ways that stress can contribute to both dry and watery eyes. This could be from a weakening of the immune system or lack of sleep. You may experience one or the other dependent on how your body responds. Dr Andy Hepworth says: “When you experience stress, your body will follow a fight or flight response and will react in a number of different ways. This will often have a negative impact on your body and your eyes are no exception. Many people may not realise that eye issues

may22.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/05/2022 19:30 Page 11

can be so intrinsically linked to stress and put it down to other factors. But in reality, stress may be impacting your day-to-day in many more ways than you think.

“Similarly, eye tests are also an important way to spot underlying issues that may be related to high levels of stress. Eyes are like a magnifying glass into the inner workings of our blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues throughout the body. A close inspection of the lens, retina and optic nerve can reveal a host of disorders, high blood pressure and diabetes among them, even if the patient feels fine and shows no other symptoms. “For example, eye exams can detect a number of cardiovascular conditions, including clogged arteries or decreased blood flow due to heart disease. These conditions can leave plaque deposits or show as damage within the eye area to indicate a more significant health issue. A very slight bleed in the eye, that presents itself as a tiny broken blood vessel in the white of the eye, can be associated with high blood pressure.”

And what about the stress we’re putting our eyes under everyday with hours and hours of screen usage? As a world-leading innovator in spectacle lens technology, Essilor is encouraging Brits to take extra precautions to avoid eyesight issues and discomfort caused by digital screen usage and to understand the risk of developing visual fatigue also known as Computer Vision Syndrome.

Dr. Andy Hepworth explains: “Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is a condition resulting from looking at a digital device (phone, tablet &/or computer screen) for protracted, uninterrupted periods of time; because the screen distance will make eyes work harder amplified by pixels constantly refreshing and the eyes must constantly refocus to see the screen clearly. The muscles within the eye are unable to recover from the strain. It is also proven that people blink less frequently when staring at a screen, which causes eyes to dry, become slightly itchy and in some cases can result in blurred vision. Glasses wearers that have incorrect or outdated prescription lenses can also be more susceptible to CVS.

“Signs of CVS are often overlooked, but left unchecked, could lead to longer term eye health issues. Symptoms include eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes and neck and shoulder pain. If you are suffering from any of these ailments you should contact your local optician, which will remain open during lockdown, for an eye exam.” Here’s how to reduce stressing your eyes out and to help with CVS.

Prevent eye strain with ‘Eye Yoga’ It goes without saying that taking breaks from screens will help to reduce eye-strain. An easy way to get into a positive habit is to follow the 20:20:20 rule.

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Or take part in eye yoga, anywhere, anytime. Look to the left, hold the position, repeat looking right. Look up, hold the position, repeat looking down. Repeat four times, closing your eyes and relaxing in between. Use lenses to combat CVS Eyezen lenses, with first of its kind DualOptim technology, are specialist ‘computer lenses’, designed to reduce eye strain or visual fatigue. Wearing these lenses can support your eyes from working so hard especially when using digital devices. Eyezen lenses can be worn even if you don’t need a prescription. Different waves lengths of light, such as Ultraviolet and Blue-Violet light, can also cause premature eye ageing. Eye Protect System is a unique filtering system that is embedded into Eyezen lenses to create Blue-Violet light filtering glasses.

Maintain regular eye tests Having regular eye tests and wearing the right corrective prescription lenses is the most important way you can protect your sight. By keeping on top of your optician appointments, or maybe going for your first one, you can maintain one of the most important senses we have and see as clearly as possible, for as long as possible. It is important not to be put off visiting your optician because of the pandemic – all practitioners have stringent social distancing measures in place. Take a break and go outdoors It’s important to take a break from screens and to go outside. Looking at objects in different distances and in natural light can be beneficial for your eyes and sight. There is no quick fix for dealing with stress, but if you are concerned that your stress and anxiety levels are having an impact on your eyesight then you should consider it a warning sign that you need to take steps to get things a little bit more under control. A good starting point is working out which stress management techniques work best for you. This could be: • • • •

Meditation and breathing techniques Exercise Talking to a friend Indulging in some self-care and a thorough bedtime winddown routine • Taking regular breaks from your screen during the day – going outside to give your eyes a rest and to benefit from fresh air and the outdoors (ecotherapy) • A digital detox

In the main, eyesight issues caused by stress are often temporary and they will ease once the causes of stress are reduced, but as with many conditions, being overwhelmed by stress can sometimes lead to other health problems, so if eye issues don’t lessen a visit to an optician is advisable. Midlife Madness I have to confess to having some fond memories about lockdown, I enjoyed walks in the nearby countryside, I took up crocheting, started playing guitar again, and as for box sets, can’t begin to count the ones I watched.

Some of those things have been firmly embedded in my post lockdown life. I hope I continue with guitar and crocheting, I do still enjoy walks but it is more of a challenge fitting them in so I have recently joined a gym. I suppose I would confess to enjoying Joe Wickes during lockdown but online workouts really aren’t for me so I’m not sure I’ll be doing those again any time soon, but there are some things that I think we should really let go of now lockdowns are over – crossing my fingers and hoping that is the case.

One mistake I made in lockdown was letting my husband – always willing and supportive- colour my hair. Definite mistake not to be repeated!! Thank goodness I didn’t let him cut it, although actually this might have been preferable to colouring. I delighted in getting back to the hairdressers but I am alarmed to find some people don’t seem to have done the same – why on earth would you assume that people who haven’t been trained to cut or colour hair can do so unless it is a very basic trim (not even sure about that really).

The impact of lockdown in work was immense too and for many people working from home for one or two days per week may now be the norm. My own work shifted so that a lot is now online and I enjoy working from my own little office – created during lockdown – and it’s not for everyone I recognise that. Much of my work is on zoom so that won’t be left behind any time soon but I hope never to use zoom to

attend events I really want to be at in person, birthdays, funerals or family get togethers. We had a get together recently at a pub by a canal it was a lovely sunny day and not one single person suggested we did a quiz! Though I must confess that with smaller gatherings we sometimes would. Do you remember those zoom quizzes that seemed to happen all the time? Zoom may be staying for some but I’m secretly hoping that the zoom quizzes remain part of lockdown not normal (what on earth is that anyway) life. I hope not to hear the words ‘you are on mute’ for a long time.

But of course, with working at home came a whole new set of behaviours particularly with regard to dress. I would simply never turn up to work wearing shorts and flip flops, albeit with a smart top. I’m not saying others would and obviously it is a free country but it’s definitely not me. I do have a fabulous wardrobe of dresses and smart work clothes that are rarely worn but real as opposed to virtual work is beginning to pick up so there is hope they may be worn again – providing I can still squeeze into them. I have to confess lock down eating habits are being very slow to disappear – I eat like a horse at home AND enjoy going out for meals again!

I must confess to some withdrawal symptoms when it comes to TV – there is simply too much good TV to watch when I am now working most of the day on most days. Citing TV as reason to reduce work hours – quite apart from financial consequences just feels a bit lame! No doubt whether we loved it or hated it we have we have all learned some things from lockdown but there are some things that we should definitely leave behind as we move forward.

KEYS TO UNLOCKING HAPPINESS It’s what we all strive for and often think of it in future terms. We’ll have moments of happiness but will often talk about the future as somehow getting to a position where our situation ‘gives’ us happiness. Finding the right partner or our dream job, winning the lottery or moving to a different country, enjoying better health for example and of course all of those things can add to our happiness. Often when we think like this we see happiness as something outside of ourselves. But the source of true happiness lies within us.

When we realise that happiness has more to do with ourselves and less with the situation, it can be very empowering. Some people, or everyone some of the time, find themselves in positions where our situations are good, where we can enjoy almost all aspects of life but we probably all can remember times when that isn’t the case. Life throws challenges at us and it is at those times when our happiness can be tested. Obviously, we’ll never be happy about losing loved ones, conflict in relationships of financial insecurities BUT while external circumstances can be difficult happiness is more about our own hearts, how we sit with ourselves, how we live our lives on a day to day basis not on particular circumstances at particular times.

I’ve put below just a few things that can help us all unlock greater happiness in our lives.

Accepting We Are We talk a lot about self-esteem and self-worth – it is a big deal. If we can’t love ourselves we are unlikely to be truly happy. The first step in love is acceptance. Loving ourselves right now as we are today, not waiting till we are fitter, earn more or whatever other constraints we may put on self-love.

Healthy self-love has lots of knock on effects – we give off a different energy, making relationships more positive, we are more likely to take care of ourselves and be able to put boundaries in place to protect our health and well-being. Greater happiness will probably start with self-acceptance for many.

Being Grateful Please don’t yawn I know I mention it a lot but that is because gratitude is very powerful. In whatever situation we find ourselves if we can make a determined effort to find something, however small, that we can be grateful for it can change our outlook and literally unlock a bit of happiness. And the more we get used to doing that on a daily basis in every situation, not just on the good days the more we’ll feel the benefit in our lives.

Connection As humans we are wired for connection. Some of us need lots of connections to feel well and happy, others need only very few but we all need those connections. During lockdown many people would acknowledge they suffered from lack of connections, not having those social contacts that keep us well and not being able to access support from our loved ones. If you remember, Tom Hanks in the film Castaway drew a face on a ball, such is the need for human connection. So however busy you may be, making time for connections is never a waste of time it’s another one of those things that keeps us well and helps us to feel happy.

All the Basics In terms of happiness we are likely to experience it more when we are reasonably well physically and mentally. In order to keep ourselves well we need to get the basics right, food, exercise sleep.

Giving Like gratitude when we put ourselves in a position where we are giving or helping others, the focus shifts away from ourselves and our own issues to others. Helping others is something that can help us all although if our main ‘job’ involves that then we need to make sure we have time to replenish and restore ourselves.

Purpose and Meaning As humans we also tend to do better when we feel we have a purpose, a direction a goal or goals to work towards. This is something that lends meaning to our lives. Obviously this will be different for every individual but having something to work towards helps us all – not so we are too focussed on the future that we can’t enjoy the present, but enough so that we feel our lives have meaning.

Appreciating the World Nature is one of life’s healers and the feeling you can get from being outdoors whether that’s walking by a beach or lake, climbing a mountain or walking in woods, or even enjoying a coffee in the garden with the birds singing nature can have a positive effect on us. So as the weather improves soak up nature whenever you can. For tips and hints to help you live a more fulfilling positive life join our face book group www.facebook.com/groups/AAYGroup.

Ingredients

2 x 400g tins chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1 tsp ground paprika ½ tsp dried chilli flakes (optional) 80g uncooked black rice (or any grain you like) 175g fresh or frozen edamame beans 2 tbsp soy or tamari sauce 1 tbsp sesame oil 1 lime, juiced 1 large avocado, finely sliced 1 cucumber, finely sliced 3 medium carrots, shredded 100g radish, finely sliced 1 large handful fresh coriander, roughly chopped

Method

Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Evenly coat the chickpeas with paprika, chilli flakes (if using), tomato puree, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Place the chickpeas in the oven for 20-25mins, or until slightly dryer but still plump. Stir frequently and be careful not to burn! While the chickpeas are in the oven, prepare the rice according to packet instructions and leave aside to cool. If using frozen edamame beans, blanch them by placing them in a bowl with boiled water for 5mins, then drain and set aside. Mix the soy, sesame oil, and lime, and set aside to dress the poke bowls. Evenly separate the ingredients into bowls, starting with the rice, and building around it with the rest of the ingredients. Serve with dressing drizzled on top and fresh coriander. PIMMS CUP TRAYBAKE “A delightful dessert perfect for outdoor entertaining, just add Pimms!”

Ingredients

325 g soft unsalted butter 250 g caster sugar 325 g self-raising flour 4 medium eggs 2 medium egg yolks (reserve the whites for the buttercream topping) Zest of 2 large oranges (use the oranges for topping) 150 g dried apricots, chopped For the Pimm’s syrup: 300 ml Pimm’s 100 g caster sugar For the buttercream: 2 medium egg whites 100 g caster sugar 200 g unsalted butter, softened, cut into small pieces 2 -3 tbsp Pimm’s 1 tbsp mint leaves, finely chopped, plus extra leaves to garnish 2 large oranges, peeled, pith and seeds removed, diced 300 g strawberries, chopped 2 -inch piece of cucumber, peeled and diced (optional)

Method Preheat the oven to 170°C, fan 150°C, gas 3. Grease and line a 18cm x 28cm rectangular tin with baking paper. Tip all of the cake ingredients into the bowl of a mixer and beat for 2 minutes, until smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and level with a palette knife. Bake on the middle shelf of the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes, or until well risen, golden and a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Meanwhile, make the Pimm's syrup. Put the Pimm's and caster sugar in a small pan over a low heat, and stir to dissolve the sugar. Once the sugar has dissolved, increase the heat and bring to a boil. Boil for 7 minutes until syrupy and reduced by half, then pour the syrup into a small measuring jug. Using a skewer, poke holes all over the warm cake, then pour 100ml of the syrup over and leave the cake to cool completely on a wire rack. Set aside the remaining syrup. Now make the buttercream. Place the egg whites and caster sugar into a large, heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water – ensuring the water doesn't touch the bowl. Using an electric whisk, whisk until the sugar dissolves in the egg whites. Test by rubbing some of the

mixture between your thumb and index finger – you shouldn't be able to feel any sugar granules, and it should feel warm. Take the bowl off the pan and continue to whisk for 3-4 minutes on high speed. The bowl should be cool to touch at the end of this. Ensure the bowl is cool enough for the butter not to melt when you start adding it to the meringue. Reduce the speed to medium and start adding the butter, one piece at a time, allowing each cube to be incorporated before adding the next. After half the butter has been added, the mixture may look curdled. But keep adding the butter and the buttercream will come together. This will take around 4-5 minutes. Continue to whisk until the buttercream is light and fluffy. Then add the Pimm's and chopped mint to taste. Cover the top of the cold cake with the prepared buttercream. Toss the oranges, strawberries and cucumber with the remaining Pimm's syrup and sprinkle over the top of the cake with the extra mint leaves just before serving. RECIPE: Sainsbury’s Magazine

Opulent Dining at

The Flying Horse, Clophill The Flying Horse in Clophill, Bedfordshire has had a major refurbishment that literally leaves you speechless. Think glamorous jewel tones, leafy prints, plush velvet seating, cosy corners and ambient lighting all coming together to create an atmosphere of cosy chic opulence.

combination was perfection, Crispy Duck Bao Bun, a stand out favourite, Hummus & Toasted Ciabatta not only tasted delicious but looked just as delightful with edible flowers as décor and the Sweet Chilli Chicken Wings were a real treat on the tastebuds.

Enough drooling over the décor it’s now time to see if the food makeover is as good as the interior.

There was no hesitation when it came to my choice it had to be the Pan-Fried Seabass Fillets & Chorizo served with a roast pepper and onion confit, lentils and grains, baby potatoes and pea puree. The portions were incredibly generous and boasted plenty of sumptuous mouthwatering fish to devour. The strong flavours of the chorizo worked well with the delicateness of the fish, full of flavours and textures to elevate the palette.

The opulence continues with a bar engulfed by a marble top and a ceiling adorned with foliage Wallpaper. The Art Deco influence is certainly felt here it’s like stepping into the 1920’s era of glitz and glamour.

You can’t start a dining experience without a drink or two! The bar had created their own DIY Gin Station complete with botanicals and garnishes, I opted for my favourite Tanqueray Flor De Sevilla with Elderflower Tonic and hubby decided to try the Koko Kolada Cocktail – Taking the Pina Colada into the 21st century Koko Canu rum is shaken with refreshing pineapple juice to produce a tropical taste of the Caribbean, delightfully fruity and refreshing. The menu brings together an exciting social dining and drinking experience, featuring fresh flavours and ingredients inspired by modern world-food trends. Choose from a broad range of premium grill dishes, fresh fish, Asian influences and plenty of healthier and lower calorie options, a great range of salads and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options too, the choice is yours and the selection mouth-wateringly tempting.

To start, we opted for a selection of small plates that included Pan- Fried Wild Scallops the flavour and texture

These sharing plates were a real hit, we could have just eaten them all night, but as it was a new menu calling out to be reviewed I decided to order a main whilst hubbie continued to indulge in the delights of the sharing plates.

I most definitely didn’t have room for dessert, but hubby had spotted his favourite on the menu – Sticky Toffee Pudding, served with a honeycomb ice cream, was it a hit? In his words “The best I’ve ever tasted” (great praise indeed considering he used to be a chef!) The Flying Horse is most definitely up there in the style and food stakes, the perfect place for cocktails with friends, a romantic meal with a loved one, a family get together, after dinner drinks or just because! This really is a stylishly divine drink and dining venue that needs to be visited at least once! For more information or to book, visit www.theflyinghorse.co.uk

Bringing The Great Gatsby to Life One of the most successful productions in Northern Ballet’s history, The Great Gatsby has not only earned fantastic reviews but has been nominated for several awards and enjoyed sold-out shows across the country. Ahead of its arrival at Milton Keynes Theatre, Choreographer, Director and Costume Designer David Nixon OBE, talks to us about bringing Fitzgerald’s timeless novel to the stage.

our imaginations with elaborate parties till the wee hours of the morning, beautiful women in thin beaded dresses and head bands, laughing as they whirl around to jazz music in the arms of handsome men in black tie and tails. All of this glamour and aspiration wraps itself around The Great Gatsby whilst corruption slithers in and out of its pages.

Why do you think the story continues to be so popular today? The Twenties is a captivating time in recent history, filling

How did you approach transforming the novel into a stage show? The challenge with any great work of literature is how to bring it to life through another medium whilst trying to give heed to and express the magnificence of the language. This production does not intend to translate the book word for word but to capture the emotions, turmoil, loves and indiscretions of the people whose stories it tells. I am

When did you first decide you wanted to turn Fitzgerald’s book into a ballet? Fitzgerald’s beautifully written novel first captured my attention when I was in high school, coincidentally the same year that the movie with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow premièred. I fell in love with the mysterious Gatsby, his unrelenting passion and obsession with recapturing his one true love. As a choreographer I always wanted to revisit this book and I was thrilled that in 2013, with the help and imagination of Patricia Doyle, my desire to create a ballet from this great American novel was finally realised.

It’s the figure of Gatsby and his obsessive dream that always holds me in its grip. He sees only the possibility of recapturing the past through whatever means available to him, defying barriers of class, money and power in the process. It’s this that I think continues to resonate with audiences to this day.

thrilled that Jérôme Kaplan designed the sets with his uncomplicated and beautiful concept, conjuring an America as painted by Edward Hopper, and that Tim Mitchell brought his personal magic to illuminate our production.

How did you choose the music for The Great Gatsby? Music is crucial to evoking the jazz era and I was inspired by a compilation of Sir Richard Rodney Bennett CBE’s work. It was Northern Ballet’s Orchestra Manager, Barry Collarbone, who suggested this composer, eagerly supported by then Music Director John Pryce-Jones and with the help of Sir Richard’s biographer Anthony Meredith. Orchestrators John Longstaff and Gavin Sutherland had the task of bringing this music to life for our small but talented orchestra. Unfortunately Sir Richard never got to see the finished ballet as regrettably he passed away in December 2012 but I believe the breadth of his compilation and the sheer imagination of the music serve as a tribute to his artistry and craft. Don’t miss your chance to see The Great Gatsby at Milton Keynes Theatre from the Tuesday 24th to Saturday 28th May. For tickets visit www.ATGtickets.com/MiltonKeynes.

NOS Hotel & Villas

may22.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/05/2022 19:33 Page 46

Welcome to Sif-NÓS Opening THIS month (May) is NOS Hotel & Villas. A fantastic brand-new hotel developed by K-Studio (Dimitris & Konstantinos Karampatakis). There are 18 suites distributed in four stone-built homes with interiors that defend the privacy of space, yet communal areas which encourage togetherness.

This brand-new hotel, is in the small town of Faros on the island of Sifnos. NOS, as a name, is inspired by the way the local idiom of pronouncing words cut in half; an abbreviation of the island’s name on which it is located (SifNÓS). At the same time, it’s a reference to the Latin pronoun “we, us, our”, which is engraved in the new hotel’s genetic code as a sense of belonging, connection and communication.

Its location is sensational. In the privileged area of Faros and within a “dive away” from the island’s most wellknown beaches, NOS rises like an independent peninsula. The bright and spacious interiors with secluded courtyards, terraces and balconies, unite with unique delicacy and gentleness the inside with the outside, the past with the present. Made for those who seek to have personalized service and unique experiences. The entrance of the private courtyard with the surprising aqueous element leads to your suite. Geometries and light soften through the arches and vaulted corridors creating a cocoon of privacy. The earthy colour palette, the natural, clean and tactile materials -stone, marble and a local type

of lime mortar- condense in just a few square meters all the uniqueness of this particular part of the Cyclades and its abundant goods.

The likes of ceramic wash basins and stools with woven tops celebrate the craftsmanship of Siphnean artisans. At the same time Coco-mat mattresses, Marshall speakers, Nespresso coffee machines and tote bags with beach towels are the material references of contemporary well-being. Joanna Burtenshaw’s original artwork on the walls convey the island’s strong character. while the draped sheets over the open-air seating and dining areas create the effect of a double room giving you the option of moving your indoor activities outside.

With beautiful sea views setting the scene and a luscious menu by Award-winning Executive Chef Athinagoras Kostakos, the enchanting dining terrace awaits for an allsensory al fresco experience. Fresh ingredients from local producers meet authentic Mediterranean flavours with a modern twist in exquisite dishes that reflects NOS’ contemporary interpretation of the island’s authentic way of life. It is the perfect place to visit for tranquillity, noble simplicity, and refined luxury that magically blends with the serenity and purity of its authentic landscape. Stunning Skylines and Stylish Sophistication at The Trafalgar St. James Alfresco cocktails on a sunny spring day, is there a better way to spend an afternoon? Especially when it’s not just the cocktails that are exceptional.

I’m perched high above the streets of London drinking in not only my cocktail but the far-reaching spectacular views of the London skyline from The Rooftop on the 7th Floor of The Trafalgar St. James Hotel – Eye level with Nelson sitting atop his column, I almost feel I should offer him a sip of my cocktail! A stunning space that you can visit all year round, day or night, whether you’re staying at the hotel or not, but staying we were and what a treat we were in for.

The Trafalgar Room, (now I felt I should become friendlier with Nelson) was to be our home for the night, a stunning space, decorated in a contemporary urban London style with a large window in the lounge area looking directly out onto Trafalgar Square. A cluster of music artwork above the bed including a picture of Mick Jagger creates a great focal point. The bathroom features a walk-in shower and bathtub, along with Molton Brown Toiletries (one of my favourites). Complimentary WIFI, soft drinks from the mini bar along with a Nespresso Coffee machine, make this the perfect retreat to return to after a busy day or night of enjoying all that London has to offer.

Initially opened in 2001 as The Trafalgar, this was Hilton’s first unbranded hotel in London. In 2017 It was completely refurbished and reopened as The Trafalgar St. James, part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, blending innovative, bold designs with excellent service making it an iconic London hotel poised on the edge of St. James, and Trafalgar Square and a stone’s throw from Soho, Mayfair and the West End.

The hotel’s Rockwell restaurant was closed during our stay (it’s only open for dinner Wednesday – Saturday), so we headed back up to The Rooftop for dinner, to not only devour delicious food but also more captivating views of the city’s skyline, that include Big Ben, The London eye, The Shard and Trafalgar Square.

Sipping on our perfectly crafted cocktails ‘Across the Equator’ a mix of Butterfly Pea Flower infused Tanqueray 10 Gin, Citric Acid, Rosemary Syrup and Pink Grapefruit Tonic, and ‘Aurora’ a blend of Spiced & Jamaican Rum, Winter Spice Liqueur, Aromatic Bitters, Lemon Juice and French Merlot as we sat under the outdoor heaters wrapped in blankets looking out into the twinkling sky of London was the perfect way to begin our dining experience. We began with appetisers of Salt & Pepper Fried Squid served with aioli and lemon and Mushroom Sliders (three small buns filled with mushroom and melted cheese), both were a real delight to our taste buds, and were washed down perfectly with a glass of chilled Saint Sidoine Rose.

Mains were Grilled Salmon, served with sorrel cream and Gran Sardo Cheese Wheel & Linguine with Smoked Bacon, the freshness of the ingredients were obvious in the combination of textures and tastes in these delicious dishes. Dessert was Pineapple Carpaccio with Coconut Sorbet, refreshing, light and a perfect end to a great evening.

After a blissful night’s sleep, it was time for breakfast, which was served in Rockwell. In here the botanical themed décor, high windows, tropical drapery and lush

green foliage gives the impression of a breath of fresh air, not an easy thing to do on a busy corner of Trafalgar Square! Back this up with an art deco feel, with fringed low-hanging lamps and petrol blue stools lining the bar and breakfast never felt so good.

We indulged in a help yourself breakfast bar buffet that included pastries, cheeses, fruit, fish, fresh bread and so much more. We opted for ‘Eggs Royale’ and ‘Avocado and Poached Eggs’ from the menu which just like everything during our visit to The Trafalgar St. James certainly didn’t disappoint.

The Trafalgar St. James, is an elegant sanctuary of style, a place to rest and play situated right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of St. James, coupled with the wonderful service they offer their guests, The Trafalgar St. James should be on everyone’s radar when planning a visit to the Capital.
