Self-Care Mornings Hold the Key to Restful Nights
Around 10,000 times a month, UK residents search for the phrase "tired all the time," indicating a widespread struggle with achieving restful sleep. According to Mattress Online the path to better sleep actually begins with establishing healthy morning routines.
A rough morning can be as detrimental as a restless night. Whether you wake up ruminating on yesterday's events or struggle to leave bed altogether, avoiding the day ahead hampers productivity. This pattern fosters daytime dread and nighttime anxiety. Yet, you have the power to break this cycle.
The benefits of a productive morning routine
Calmness - Taking a moment for yourself early in the day allows you to reflect on yesterday, and this calmness helps foster a sense of control over your day ahead.
Focus - Preparing for the day helps you gain clarity on your tasks and take on the day with better intentions.
Energy - Sorting a plan for the day takes the stress out of tasks which could otherwise wear down your mental energy.
Productivity - Setting yourself up with the confidence to tackle challenges will help you work more efficiently.
Wellbeing - Slowing down to appreciate your surroundings can help you develop a greater sense of purpose.
Get over the first hurdle by getting out of bed
It can be daunting whenever we try to form a new routine in life, and this can feel especially tricky when the first step requires leaving the cosiness of your bed. T
Why? What is motivating you to start a new morning routine? Setting intentions is an important step in forming any new habit.
Be realistic: Consider your time and environmental constraints. Planning to go to an early morning yoga class that you know you don’t really have time for will only make you feel bad for ‘failing’ when you miss it. Why not try following an at-home routine and starting off in small steps
Start small: Again, overreaching can lead to unnecessary feelings of disappointment in yourself. Start with quicker or more manageable tasks, you can always build on them if you find yourself benefitting from them.
What do you enjoy? Starting a new morning routine should be all about your own wants and needs, so pick an exercise, no matter how small, that you know will bring you positive energy for the day.
Go with the flow: Try to complete a morning activity every day, but don’t beat yourself up if you need to do it later in the day or skip it altogether - be flexible.
Let sunlight in as soon as you can after waking Stanford University says that getting some sunlight exposure soon after you wake up can help to set your internal body clock.
This light exposure is even better if you can get outside for it - time outside in the natural light helps to naturally regulate your circadian rhythm and prompts your body to start producing the ‘sleepy chemical’ melatonin. Beginning this process early in the morning puts your body at the right stage for sleep when you get into bed at night.
The SHINE method
Expert cognitive behaviour therapist, Toby Oliver joined forces with his sister Kate Oliver to outline some effective morning strategies:
Silence - This group of techniques is all about finding some calm in order to reflect on the day ahead. It will help you feel more centred and ready to take on the day ahead. One way to achieve this state is by practising your breathing. Try the finger breathing technique, a form of self-hypnosis which helps to regulate emotions and calm anxiety.
Happiness - By starting your day on a positive note, you are likely to feel more resilient to the day’s challenges. Begin by practising positive affirmations to create feelings of happiness. Write down some affirmations for the day ahead, making sure that they are focused on attracting good outcomes rather than avoiding negative ones. Be sure to keep them in the present tense, and remember to speak them aloud with conviction.
Intention - Knowing what you want to achieve for the day can help you stay focused and avoid becoming drawn into negative thought patterns. To achieve anything it is important to have a plan, and your plan for the day should start when you first wake to the sound of your alarm clock. It’s important to maintain a healthy routine with alarm: pick an alarm sound that is softer, so you are not jarred awake, and try to set it as close as possible to the time you need to get up. Avoid battling with the snooze button for an hour, it will only leave you feeling more tired.
Nourishment - You can only look after your mind when you first look after your body, so it’s important to have a healthy morning diet - no skipping breakfast! Give yourself time to enjoy and appreciate your breakfast - rushing your meal isn’t good for your body and doesn’t give your brain time to enjoy the food. Similarly, mix up your breakfast menu! Most people don’t have the same thing for dinner every day, so make your mornings more meaningful by planning new and enjoyable breakfasts. If you’re not used to eating in the mornings, try building up your appetite gradually by first introducing fruit or light snacks.
Exercise - Getting up and getting moving is the best way to give yourself energy for the day ahead. This will help regulate your circadian rhythm so that by bedtime, you are ready for lights out and won’t be tossing and turning.
Fit movement into the time you have - a quick walk around the block is more manageable than going to the gym, but can still offer some of the same great well-being benefits. Always listen to your body and don’t overexert yourself. If you’re not usually one for morning exercise, pop some encouraging notes around the house reminding you why you are doing this.

Coping with Hard Days
As humans we all have hard days from time to time. They aren’t easy but experience tells us we generally survive them. However, as with all situations there are things we can do to make them a little easier to endure and one strategy is to ask yourself some gentle questions. The purpose of these questions is to reflect on why you are finding the day hard–often the situation may be a tough one but our reaction to it may not be helping.
So, on tough days try asking yourself these questions – gently and without judgement the purpose is to support yourself not berate or criticise yourself.
What is making the day so challenging.
Some days we might find the answer to this easily, other days we can be a mystery to ourselves. If it’s not apparent then it can be worth setting some time aside to be still and let you mind reveal the challenges.
What sensations do I notice in my body and what emotions do I feel?
Two questions here but very connected, emotions are felt physically so noticing the physical feelings and considering the emotions they may stem from can be helpful. Sometimes of course it is the physical feelings like pain that give rise to the emotions. Some people find using the RULER method helpful.
R – Recognition of emotions in oneself and others
U – Understanding the causes and consequences of emotions
L – Labelling emotions accurately
E – Expressing emotions appropriately
R – Regulating emotions effectively
We need to remember that emotions and physical symptoms can be very linked – if we are angry or anxious we may well ‘feel’ it as a headache or pain/upset in the digestive system.
What story are those emotions telling me?
Worth analysing – so for example if you have been upset by a particular person and you know this keeps happening then the story may be that you need to set some firmer boundaries in your relationship with that person. The key here is allowing space to analyse the feelings, learn the things that cause you distress anger or disappointment and learn how to care for yourself through these times AND consider the cause of some of this upset and whether it might be prevented.
What actions are they telling me to safely take?
When we allow ourselves to be still, very often ideas come to us about what we might do to take care of ourselves. There is
often a recognition in our mind of what our body and mind might both need. Sometimes we may not even be aware of the exhaustion we feel, until we stop. It is only then there is the recognition that actually we need rest.
What words of kindness can I offer myself?
It is a strange condition of humans that we are often our worst critics. We somehow find it easier to forgive others than to forgive ourselves and whilst we may always be kind to others often we berate ourselves. A good way to think about it is putting yourself in the position of a friend. If you had a friend feeling like this what words of kindness could you offer – then try those on yourself.
What is one small thing I can give myself in this moment that will bring ease?
We all know what would bring us some comfort at different times, maybe a simple snack that’s a favourite, talking to a friend (not even about the problem), walking in nature, reading a favourite book or watching a movie. We may all be different but we all usually have ways we can ‘ease’ moments we find painful So don’t wait for someone else to do this – do it for yourself.
Hopefully when you’ve made time to ask yourself these gentle questions, reflected and taken some action you will start to feel better.
But there is still one final step. If this isn’t the first time you have found yourself feeling like this then it is helpful to also consider things like
• When you have felt like this before
• What helped then (maybe you could try that now) •. Who could you reach out to for support
Emotions can definitely take us by surprise but we can also fall into certain patterns with emotions – we can ‘learn’ as it were to be stressed by things or allow ourselves to always be anxious about particular situations – even or perhaps especially those we have no control over. When that happens we maybe need a new approach or we will find ourselves continually in similar un helpful states.
If you find certain patterns repeating themselves then don’t just deal with the emotions and feelings, instead try to consider the cause and in time address those causes not just the feelings.

Sarah McAllister - founder of Feng Shui
Agency shares with how this ancient philosophy is designed not only to improve your home layout but also put you at ease and bring wellbeing into your home.
Keep the space free of clutter
For the entrance way, keep it clear of clutter so that you don’t block the door opening fully, as this can cause the energy to stagnate, keep the external and internal space brightly lit with an eco-friendly lightbulb, otherwise the area can become too dark and lifeless.
Sarah says the space doesn’t have to be immaculate. “Don’t worry if there are signs of life at home - this is very healthy and perfectly normal unless you live in a show home!” she says. “The Chinese call these things “affection” - like a few toys here and there, maybe some clothes hanging around in a pile, or some unread magazines. It’s when things start gathering dust that you have a problem as the chi (energy) is stagnating.”
Arranging your furniture in the living room
When it comes to furniture arrangement in the living room, Sarah says, “Placing a TV or music system in the south east part of the room can be good but for this year it’s slightly problematic as we have some inauspicious energies in the south east that we aren’t keen on activating too much with loud music or sound and light. The sofa is best with a solid wall behind it or just off of the centre of the room, but not under a window.”
Add Feng shui plants
Tall upright plants with large round or smooth leaves or palm leaves are great for bringing natural energy into the space and for cleansing the air, Sarah explains. “Ideally they are placed in plant pots which are up off of the floor, otherwise their uplifting impact is somewhat reduced. Avoid yucca plants or those palms with very sharp leaves – the parlour palms are fine though as these are a little pointed but softly so.”
Be in command in your home office
Have a solid wall behind your desk so that you feel relaxed and in control of your space and
ideally so you can see the entrance door, Sarah says. “Having some sort of movement in the office is good particularly if you live on your own. This can be a water feature or an aquarium or one of those kinetic motion pieces of art. They do need precision placement as every home is different. Fresh flowers or those lovely moth orchids are also a great and easy way to bring natural energy into the space but don’t add them to a cluttered space, only when you have tidied up!”
“Contrary to popular thought, you don’t have to have a completely Zen space all the time. Sometimes we have a few days of high productivity where we need to spread out papers and drawings and get immersed in our internal creativity – in this state we don’t need everything perfect. But it is inadvisable to live and work like that all the time, since it gets too confusing, so I always have a nice tidy up after I have finished a working frenzy!”
Choose furniture with rounded edges
Curves are the way to go in the dining room as sharp corners are a big no-no in feng shui. “A circular or oval table in the dining room is considered more social than a rectangular one, but you can still bring warmth to the space even if you have a square table,” Sarah explains. “Adding candles creates warmth and appeals to the heart connection which then supports social rapport and also is helpful for digestion (earth element). A ‘lazy susan’ at the centre of the table is good fun as it requires some interaction with others in the space!”
Tips on mirror placement
Mirrors are more than just decorative items in Feng Shui; they are used to enhance the flow of positive energy. Strategically placed mirrors can enhance a room's positive energy. Hang the mirror on any wall in your dining room, as long as it faces the dining table. Avoid placing your mirror opposite a window. “Quite often there are fireplaces in a dining room and a common mistake is to put a large mirror above but the mirror is a water element, which causes a fire/water clash that can trigger arguments,” Sarah says. “Instead have a nice peaceful work of art above the hearth.”

Lime Cheesecake with Baked Rhubarb
This no-bake cheesecake is the perfect dessert for sunshine days, and tastes just as good as it looks
Ingredients
For the cheesecake:
325g digestive biscuits
200g butter, melted
560g full-fat cream cheese
80g icing sugar
250ml double cream
3 lime zest
Dash vanilla
For the baked rhubarb:
8 stalks of rhubarb (500g)
80ml water
25g caster sugar
15ml lime juice
Method
Line the base of a 19cm round loose bottom cake tin with parchment paper. Using a Kenwood food processor attachment, blitz the biscuits then melt the butter and mix with the biscuits and spoon them into the baking tin.
Using the back of a spoon, press the biscuit crumb up the sides and across the bottom of the tin. Pop this into the fridge for 20 minutes.
To make the filling, whisk the cream cheese, icing sugar, lime zest and vanilla until combined. Pour in the double cream and whisk on high speed until the mixture is thick.
Spoon this into the lined tin, smooth out the top and chill overnight. To make the baked rhubarb, preheat the oven to 180C. Wash and chop the stalks into 2-inch pieces. Place the rhubarb, lime juice, water and sugar into a baking dish and pop into the oven for 10-12 minutes or until the stalks begin to soften. Remove and allow to cool completely in their juices.
Carefully run a sharp knife around the edge of the cheesecake to help with demoulding.
Place onto a serving dish and top with the baked rhubarb.

The Syndicate
The Syndicate, based on the smash-hit critically acclaimed BBC One drama that entertained millions of viewers, is coming to Milton Keynes this month.
Bringing three generations together, star of stage and screen Gaynor Faye and her son, Oliver Anthony, are to join the cast of the world premiere UK stage tour of The Syndicate, written by Gaynor’s mum, the legendary, Kay Mellor.
This new comedy-drama – also directed by Gaynor – is based on the smash-hit critically acclaimed BBC One drama that entertained millions of viewers over four series.
The funny and moving stage adaption – written by BAFTA Award winner Kay Mellor just before her untimely passing in 2022 - is based on the first TV series and tells the story of five supermarket workers whose lottery syndicate numbers come in just as their jobs and livelihoods are under threat.
Will a share of the jackpot make their dreams come true or their nightmares a reality? One thing’s for certain, the win of a lifetime will change the lives, loves and relationships of the syndicate members forever.
Gaynor Faye said: “I’m thrilled to be joining Brooke Vincent, Samantha Giles and the rest of this stellar cast on stage. The Syndicate is very close to my heart for so many reasons and it’s fitting that this production is a real family affair, as we welcome Oliver to the company too. I know that he will make an amazing addition to the cast.”
Oliver Anthony said: “Having acted in series four of The Syndicate TV show and worked with my grandmother, playing the role of Jamie, in development workshops of the play, I’m chuffed to bits to be making my stage acting debut alongside my mum in my grandmother’s final play. This production is in honour of her and all she achieved and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into the character of Jamie and hopefully doing her proud. “
Gaynor is one of the nation’s best-loved actresses and her many acting credits include roles in Coronation Street, Emmerdale, series four of the BBC’s The Syndicate and numerous stage tours including Calendar Girls and Band of Gold.
Oliver Anthony makes his stage-acting debut in the role of Jamie. His TV acting credits include the award-winning My Left Nut, Fat Friends and series four of the BBC’s The Syndicate.
Such is the success of Kay’s writing that her stories have become a hit on the stage as well as the screen with the hugely successful stage adaptions Fat Friends – The Musical and Band of Gold, which, like The Syndicate, were also collaborations between Kay’s company Rollem and theatre producer, Josh Andrews.
The Syndicate comes to Milton Keynes Theatre from Tuesday 28 May - Saturday 1 June 2024.
Tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com/MiltonKeynes
TRAVEL
VeniceEVERLASTING MEMORIES IN LAKE COMO
For centuries Lake Como has been renowned for its imposing setting, lakeside villages, and glamorous celebrities. Located at the foot of the Alps, it offers some of the most romantic and picturesque scenery in Italy, a destination of pure beauty, a dreamy place that exceeds expectations.
Having visited most of Italy, Lake Como has been one place that has always eluded me (I really don’t know why) and so when I was invited to visit this truly exquisite part of Italy there was really no other answer than yes!
We were staying at The Hilton Lake Como, a luxury hotel, just a picturesque 15-minute walk from the historical centre. Located on the site of an old silk factory, merging old and new together in a bright and elegant contemporary way. The old part of the hotel has been ingeniously connected to the new part by a ‘glass cube’, an all-glass lounge filled with plants and large plush sofas, just like an exquisite garden room, decorated in a soft palette of neutrals and browns to further enhance the outdoor feel. Fall into one of the sofas and you won’t want to get up they’re so comfy and just the perfect place to sit, people watch and while away the hours.
And then there’s the smell, so exquisitely floral, it lingers in the air wherever you walk (courtesy of the large diffusers dotted around).
Heading up to the 6th floor for a little lunch in Terrazza 241, surrounded by rolling mountains, lush foliage, and panoramic views of the iconic crystal blue Lake you literally have your breath taken away, and it is at this moment you realise what all the fuss about ‘Como’ is! It’s the most idyllic backdrop for a wedding, minimoon, honeymoon or romantic getaway, the most heavenly place to create memories.
There are a selection of rooms and suites at Hilton Lake Como, many with impressive views of the lake and scenery beyond. We were lucky enough to be staying in a suite, an oasis of tranquillity with large floor-to-ceiling windows ensuring plenty of light, whilst tones of brown complimented the neutral delicate palette in the bedroom and soft hues of grey in the living area crafted a calm lakeside ambience that was further enhanced by a marble bathroom, including a large free standing bath to luxuriate with bubbles of both kinds in. The icing on the cake to this sumptuous suite was the balcony offering even more serene views of the lake and its surrounding natural beauty, the perfect spot for an aperitif, morning coffee or just because.
Italy is renowned for its exceptional food, and Hilton Lake Como keeps this reputation alive. Terrazza 241 offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, a place to enjoy alfresco at its best, and if the weather isn’t perfect, the restaurant has inside seating so there’s no chance you’ll miss out on the delicious dishes. Whether it’s breakfast fit for a King or a dining delight it really is a foodie’s heaven. The menu offers creative contemporary dishes inspired by traditional recipes, the lobster spaghettoni was an explosion of mouth-watering flavours, the pasta was cooked perfectly (hubbie’s Italian, so he’s the ideal critic) and just divine as was the Mediterranean sea bass served with cherry tomatoes and taggiasca olives, the flavours just tempted the tastebuds mouthful after mouthful, and then there was the scallops, tender and flavoursome all accompanied of course with champagne, memorable views and a symphony of colour when the sun set, it really is a place for romance and an Italian culinary journey that’ll stay forever in your memories.
Explore your foodie journey even further with of course a stroll to the main town, where although its only ten minutes away will take you far longer as you veer off track looking at exquisite villas, hidden alleyways and of course lake views from all angles. Maybe you’ll even spot an ‘A-Lister’ or two, and wonder if that speedboat on the lake is part of a new Bond film, who knows, the possibilities are endless, all I know is there’s no better way to reward yourself for all this exploring than with a cool Aperol Spritz and traditional pizza with the lake as your backdrop.
If all this eating, drinking and exploring has worn you out, then it’s most definitely time to pay the hotel’s award winning eforea spa a visit. A place to savour serenity and romance as you wrap yourself in a soft fluffy robe and are pampered with an enchanting treatment followed by a glass of bubbles as you relax and rejuvenate in your own cocoon of bliss.
The spa has an indoor pool, but if the sun is shining it’ll be calling you to the rooftop where you can enjoy the outdoor rooftop pool, overlooking the lake and the natural beauty beyond. Sit back in one of the surrounding loungers, a glass of something cold in your hand and who knows, you may get a little feeling of not only calm but maybe a slight glimpse into how George Clooney actually lives!
Hilton Lake Como really is a couple’s dream, a tranquil setting with exhilarating views that allows for you to do as little or as much as you want. Lie around the pool sipping cocktails, tempt your tastebuds with delightful dishes, spoil yourself at the spa or wander into the town and take a boat out on the lake, the possibilities are endless, all you have to do is envelop yourself in a bubble of love and enjoy.

What is sound healing?
Sound healing uses the power of sound vibrations to promote healing on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level. At the heart of a sound healing treatment is the use of specially curated sound frequencies, including Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls, tuning forks, and other therapeutic instruments. These vibrations are carefully tailored to resonate with the body's natural rhythms, promoting relaxation, stress reduction, and energy alignment.
During a sound healing session, guests are invited to recline comfortably as the soothing sounds wash over them, inducing a state of deep relaxation and inner peace. The gentle vibrations penetrate the body at a cellular level, releasing tension, clearing energetic blockages, and promoting a sense of wholeness and vitality.
Sound healing has been scientifically proven to reduce stress, anxiety, and chronic pain while enhancing mood, cognitive function, and overall quality of life. With regular sessions, you could experience impactful improvements to physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
