LETTER

With approximately seven weeks to go until the big day, we feel it’s quite acceptable to mention that word – Christmas and fill this issue with all that glitters and more.
I especially love this time of year, it’s lovely to reflect on Christmas past and the traditions you had as a child that you have now brought into adulthood and your own family. I for one get terribly nostalgic with my childhood memories - I swear to this day I heard Santa’s bells on Christmas Eve.
The countdown’s well and truly on to when you open day 1 of your advent calendar, gone are the days of just a picture or a bit of chocolate, now calendars are full of beauty products, alcohol and food – You literally are spoilt for choice, turn to page 10 for a roundup of our favourite beauty advents - what one will you choose? I think there’s something just as magical about giving a gift as there is receiving one. The look on the person’s face as they unwrap it is a joy to watch, but I hear you ask “I don’t know what to buy? “Look no further than our Christmas Gift Guide, (page 25) this year it’s back bigger and better than before and has gifts everyone will love.

Expert Tips for Protecting your Home in the Dark Nights Experts are advising homeowners to improve their home security before longer nights arrive, as statistics show that burglaries spike during nighttime hours. There were 288,000 burglaries in the UK from April 2022 to March 2023 - an increase of more than 10,000 from the year before. More than 60 per cent of these took place during darkness. We spoke to the experts at www.mybuilder.com who shared their top tips with us:
Gravel your driveway Our first security tip is to lay gravel around your home. If you are able to use gravel as a path or driveway surface, the noise could help fend off intruders, plus also bring a new clean appearance to the exterior of your property. If a potential thief is “casing” your property, a gravel driveway gives them limited access to your home without making a fair amount of noise, which will act as a deterrent.
Keep doors and windows locked Statistics show that a third of burglars gain entry through forcing a lock, 24 per cent of burglars gain access through a window, 76 per cent through a door, with 15 per cent of these came through doors or windows that were left unlocked. Check all doors are locked when leaving the property, or even when you are inside. Ensure keys are not left in windows or doors or left in sight. It is also advisable to ensure you have fully working and secure locks - and seek advice if you are concerned your locks are not up to current standards.
Install a burglar alarm A burglar alarm is one of the most effective ways to ensure your house is more secure. It can be set when you are away from your house, or when going to bed. If you already have a burglar alarm installed, get it serviced and checked before the winter season. Once you have your alarm, don’t neglect to set it, as not activating your alarm could invalidate your home insurance. The quality of home cameras has improved leaps and bounds in recent years while prices have fallen, making them more accessible than ever. If you want something more substantial, speak to a security specialist who can talk you through your options.
Protect your outdoor property too Outhouses, summer houses, sheds, garages, vehicles, trailers, and garden offices should all be locked and secured as these can be just as tempting for a potential burglar.
Check that all doors and windows on these are up to standard, and consider getting a professional if there’s any damage that makes them easy to access. Lighting around these outdoor spaces is especially vital, so it’s worth investing in some external timed or motion activated systems.
Unlocked doors and windows can also invalidate your home insurance cover if you aren't at home.
CCTV CCTV is becoming increasingly more popular for homes and businesses. With ever improving technology, CCTV is even more effective at night nowadays with HD night vision. It can also be surprisingly affordable to install, with prices starting around £500.
Secure your valuables Don’t leave your valuables in sight to tempt any passing thieves. Laptops, phones, jewellery and other valuables should all be secured out of sight. Jewellery and watches are two of the most common items to be targeted in a robbery. Consider installing a safe for valuable or sentimental items, to keep them out of harm’s way in the event of a break in.
Having a secure boundary to your property is a major deterrent to thieves. Check your fencing isn’t damaged, gates have proper locks, and hedges don’t have any gaps in them. It’s also advisable to ensure lighting and CCTV reach these areas too. If you have a side access, make sure this is secure and consider installing a bell on any gate.
Light up your property If you are going out or to bed, consider leaving a light on or installing security lighting. Some lighting systems allow timers to switch on as it approaches darkness; others have motion detectors. An electrician can help install secure systems in a short space of time and plug In timers give you a cheaper aleternive with prices starting from just £4.
Video doorbell A cheaper alternative to CCTV and easier to install, but still very effective. You can track visitors to your home via your phone and even speak to anyone on your doorstep. Many smart doorbells also track movement across their line of sight, so can be instrumental in preventing break ins. Don’t forget to use the stickers or signs that come with these as an extra deterrent. Check your boundaries

Life is nothing if not a journey with different terrains and seasons and I guess we all accept that change is part of life. Lots of different changes happen for lots of different reasons but age is something that throughout our life causes an awful lot of changes. It’s funny how when we are young all we seem to want to do is get older and then when we age all we want to do is return to our youth! But while the process of aging will vary the fact of aging remains and brings with it a lot of changes. I’m certainly not here to list them all but I will say that while some are harsh there are others that can somehow ease the process.
I suppose the biggest change for many are with our senses especially sight and hearing. I am now that woman with dodgy eye make-up as how on earth can I see to apply it when I have to take off my glasses to put it on! Just can’t figure this one out. I mean when it comes to things like phones I can adjust the font size, and it is a really good job I don’t have secret or racy texts because trust me everyone within a 6-foot radius can read my texts – can’t manage that with the eye make-up scenario! And I often mistake things I see – especially when its dark so I mistook our dear cat for a pair of dark coloured pyjamas thankfully I thought the pyjamas were the cat so I walked gingerly around them not the other way around where he may have been picked up amid grumbles about why no one can use the linen basket and summarily dumped in the washing machine! But the possibility remains as he does like to nestle in piles of clothes on the floor.
Of course, hearing can be another challenge and we continue, my hubby and I, to have a number of
nonsensical conversations as we mis-hear each other a lot – he says he just needs more clues and to be honest I have to remind myself that he can’t hear all my thoughts so I’ll often be considering a matter in my head then come out with something about it but of course he has no context whatsoever and I can be less than understanding until he reminds me that a lot of my conversation had simply been in my head with myself! Memory as we all know can be affected by this whole aging thing too. I can remember all sorts of song lyrics and things I learned at school like conjugating a Latin verb but haven’t got a clue why I walked all the way upstairs as I stand in a bewildered fashion in the bedroom knowing that there had clearly been an intended purpose to this trip! But the weird thing is also that there are more things one has to remember, like when exactly to take the various pills and potions that somehow now seem an essential part of life – and its not just the actual taking of them, but remembering to get them on repeat prescription, remembering to collect them from the chemist, remembering where I’ve put them and even whether or not I have taken them today!
It seems that just at a time when people should be able to take it easier there is a whole lot more to do and don’t get me started on all the medical appointments – talk about a full-time job. I must point out that I am not quite at retirement age yet – maybe I never will be as they keep advancing it but I had this idea that free bus passes were all about fun and enjoyment – trips out and stuff not balancing your diary to make sure you can fit all the various trips to clinics and hospitals!! Assuming of course that one can actually remember them!

Stepping into the Dark We’ve probably all heard or read quotes about the fact that every journey whether 5 miles or 500 miles involves us putting one foot in front of the other. That notion of keeping moving whether physically to travel from place to place or emotionally or mentally to move forward in some way with our lives, perhaps changing jobs or relationships is an important one. We can probably all also acknowledge that sometimes keeping going can be a very hard thing to do. Sometimes we can’t ‘see’ very far ahead, sometimes we must navigate through strange or difficult times when everything within us is screaming at us to stop. Now we need to be clear that resting is not stopping. Resting is essential its where we recoup and recover and get our energy back so we can continue. But how do you keep going when it all feels dark and difficult?
Try not to dwell on what you don’t want. If you find yourself afraid of what might happen don’t fill your mind with those thoughts try to keep in mind what you do want – the prize you are chasing the not the problem right in front of you.
The start of any journey is often easier as we are in some ways at least inspired to begin – or inspired to reach the ‘destination’. But of course, for many of us as the journey continues our inspiration can fail and so it is important to develop discipline and habits that can help you keep going – relying on inspiration won’t sustain us on a long journey.
As with every area of life when we need to keep going even when we may feel the going is tough perhaps we have lost sight of the prize or perhaps we have run out of stamina, it helps to hang on to positivity. It doesn’t always come naturally and it isn’t always easy but each day and countless times within each day we have a choice and we can focus on the positive things – or not. When faced with a difficulty try to think of things in a new way – find the positive within the tough times. It’s often about the way we frame what is happening rather than the events themselves. Many of us can slip into feeling sorry ourselves, or that everything is our fault, that maybe we don’t deserve the things we are chasing after. But viewing those times
differently – seeing that stuff just happens and relying on our own fortitude to get ourselves out - essentially not taking it personally but rather looking at it or framing it as an obstacle to be overcome not a personal attack.
So of course, mindset is important and changing our mindset isn’t something we do once its something we need to keep working on.
Positive thoughts and visualisation can help us to view situations more positively and remember that if we go through life expecting failure and disappointment we will probably find ourselves experiencing them. Sometimes the reason we expect failure goes right back to our mindset – if we don’t believe we deserve success or happiness then we probably will never experience success or happiness because our brain always seeks evidence for what we believe. Essentially if we expect failures then our subconscious will sort of make sure that’s what we get.
It’s also worth remembering the power of humour – it is thought to be one of life’s best medicines releasing lots of feel good hormones into our brains.. Whatever challenges we are facing if we can find ways to laugh and notice the good things in life that will strengthen us and possibly enable us to keep going through dark or difficult times Lastly in your toolkit for keeping going through dark times I’d add hope. However dark the situation appears it is worth trying to hang on to hope. I came across an affirmation just this week to sustain hope. It is quite simply ‘I don’t know when and I don’t know how but …… ….will happen’ stating specifically at the end what it is you want to happen. Give it a try with whatever difficult situation you might be facing. The dark times we have are never easy but all of us will probably have to keep going through some dark times in ourlives.
Remind yourself of your strength, stay positive, work on your mindset and try to hang on to some humour and hope and before you know it you will be walking back into the light. For more ways to find a more fulfilling life check out my book ‘Make it Magnificent’ on Amazon.

Ingredients 12 – 16 new potatoes 8 bone-in skin-on free-range chicken breasts 2 tsp smoked paprika divided 1 large red or yellow pepper cut into medium-sized chunks 200g to 250g baby tomatoes 3 garlic cloves peeled and sliced 1 large red onion cut into wedges 150g chorizo sliced ½ cup Calamata olives ¼ cup medium cream sherry optional Finely grated zest of a lemon juice of a lemon A couple of sprigs of thyme (optional) Sea salt and black pepper Olive oil for cooking
Method Preheat the oven to 180C / 350F and bring a pot of water to a boil. Cook the new potatoes until they are knife tender halfway through (3/4 of the way cooked through). Add a splash of olive to a large non-stick pan. Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper and 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika. Fry them on either side until they just start turning brown but are not cooked through. In a large oven-roasting tray, line the pan with the red pepper chunks, onions wedges, garlic, tomatoes, chorizo slices, olives, and sherry. When the new potatoes are par-cooked add them to the tray and drizzle over a splash of olive oil and toss things around. Ensure that things are more or less in an even layer. Place the browned chicken on top of the vegetable mix and then grate over the zest of the lemon and add the juice. Sprinkle over the remaining one teaspoon of smoked paprika (over everything), season well with salt and pepper, and scatter over the thyme if you are using it. Bake uncovered for about 45 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. Serve with a big green salad and crusty bread. Recipe by www.drizzleanddip.com

Cherry & Pistachio Bakewell Christmas Tree “Expect your guests to be impressed when you serve this fantastic festive bake”
Ingredients 75g Butter, softened 75g Caster Sugar 2 Eggs, beaten 100g Pistachios, blitzed 75g Ground Almonds 15g Plain Flour 2 x Ready Rolled Puff Pastry Sheets 150g Cherry Jam 1 Egg, Beaten 12 Opies Cocktail Cherries Icing sugar for dusting
Method Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Gradually add in the eggs, stirring in thoroughly before adding more. Fold in 75g of the pistachios, the ground almonds and flour and mix again. Refrigerate until needed. Preheat the oven to 180°C / fan 160°C / gas 4. On a lined baking tray roll out one of the pastry sheets. Cut into a Christmas tree shape, including a trunk. Using a spatula cover in a layer of the pistachio frangipane mixture, then top with a layer of cherry jam. Place your second sheet of puff pastry on top, and cut it in line with the shape of the Christmas tree. From the top of the tree gently score two lines either side of the trunk, all the way down. Either side of the trunk cut horizontally to form branches about 1cm wide, ensuring you have fully cut through the pastry. Work your way up the branches twisting each one. Cut a star from your pastry discard and top the tree. Brush with a beaten egg and place into the oven for 15- 20 minutes until golden and puffed up. Sprinkle with the remaining pistachios and dot with Opies Cocktail Cherries to make edible baubles. Dust with some icing sugar and serve warm. Recipe by Opies

Understated Grandeur at
Hotel Saint
Walk out of Aldgate Underground Station and step straight next door into a world of understated grandeur at Hotel Saint (previously the Dorsett City London). This hotel has undergone a stylish, chic brand transformation that’ll have you indulging in a sanctuary of luxe as soon as you walk through the doors.
Located in the heart of ‘The Square Mile’ and inspired by the site’s ancient 2,000-year-old Roman history, Hotel Saint is located next to the refurbished St Botolph's Church, which dates back to the mid1700s (the novelist and journalist Daniel Defoe was married there) and is at the crossroads of several of London’s most vibrant neighbourhoods - including Spitalfields, Shoreditch and Whitechapel.
Stepping into the modern stylish lobby, not only does the décor reflect warmth and elegance so does the calm and friendly smiles from the staff, all of which makes the foundation for a ‘nothing is too much trouble’ attitude.
The hotel has 267 rooms and suites spread over 13 floors with all of them enjoying floor-to-ceiling windows that allow stunning panoramic views over the London skyline.
Our room, the ‘Botolph’ Junior Suite was the epitome of stylish elegance, an open- plan layout decorated in soft neutrals accentuated with gold and dark hues, and the most divine scent that floats around the suite creating an immediate sense of serenity.
Adorned with crisp white cotton bedding the king-size bed was made for cosiness and comfort and with a wide-screen TV here and in the living space, they’ll definitely be no arguing over the channels!
Soak in the lavish bathtub or take a long hot waterfall shower in the marbled bathroom before wrapping yourself in the soft, fluffy bathrobes and pouring a refreshing glass of champagne, before sitting down and marvelling at the awe-inspiring far-reaching London views that include the iconic Saint Botolph and The Gherkin, this really is an impressive experience, that can be enjoyed without even leaving your room.
If you can drag yourself away from your room just for a while and take the elevator even higher to the 14th floor you won’t be disappointed – It’s here that Jin-Bo Law the hotel’s exceptional rooftop bar is located, a place to indulge in carefully concocted cocktails such as ‘Cherry Bomb’ ‘Saint’ and Jin Bo Papi’ whilst soaking up the atmosphere and experiencing even more mesmerising views of London’s skyline as day turns into night. A must-dine eatery when staying at Hotel Saint, is Crispin, an all-day modern European restaurant and wine bar in Spitalfields and just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.
Serving an array of sumptuous seasonal sharing dishes and low intervention wines, we tempted our taste buds with plates of Smoked mackerel pate - Portland crab – Courgettes with chickpeas and Breaded bacon chops served with anchovy butter and potato salad. They say you eat with your eyes and these dishes certainly had the aesthetic and the taste. The flavours and textures combined together seamlessly to create dishes that were an absolute delight on the tastebuds. There was a real lively buzz in the restaurant creating an atmosphere that makes Crispin the ideal place to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at anytime during your stay. Back at Hotel Saint, it seemed rude not to elevate back to the 14th floor for a nightcap at Jin-Bo Law, and inhale the breath-taking views of the iconic London skyline as it lit up around us. Hotel Saint is a hidden gem, a sophisticated oasis of pure unadulterated calm, right in the heart of the city, a faultless base to explore, relax and reset. BOOK IT

We began our dining experience with King scallops served with a smoked lobster bisque and apple foam, paired with a glass of Ultimate Provence Rose, beautifully presented with an array of textures and tastes that were a real treat to the palette.
The main event was Suffolk lamb rump, lamb fat potato terrine, spring green salad and lamb sauce - the meat was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy with a vibrant mix of colours that were reflected in the rich taste. This was paired perfectly with a glass of Nosotros Pinot Noir Reserva wine. Dessert was just as appetising, poached rhubarb in crystallised puff pastry served with Chantilly cream, exquisite and flavoursome, the perfect end to a culinary delight. After dinner, the pull of watching the sunset over Ely Cathedral was just too big and we took our glass of port, lit the firepits and snuggled under blankets on the patio, watching the beautiful summer’s day turn into a starry night sky. It was a wonderful end to an exceptional evening of impeccable food and wine just sitting back and pretending to be Lord and Lady of the Manor, even if it was only for a short while.

Noises Off this November The 40th-anniversary production of Michael Frayn’s multiaward-winning farce, Noises Off is coming to Milton Keynes this November as part of its major UK tour.
Directed by Lindsay Posner, the touring production will star Liza Goddard as Dotty Otley, Matthew Kelly as Selsdon Mowbray and Simon Shepherd as Lloyd Dallas. They will be joined on tour by Simon Coates as Frederick Fellowes, Lucy Robinson as Belinda Blair, Daniel Rainford as Tim Allgood, Dan Fredenburgh as Garry Lejeune, Lisa Ambalavanar as Brooke Ashton and Nikhita Lesler as Poppy Norton-Taylor. One of the greatest British comedies ever written, Michael Frayn’s celebrated play serves up a riotous double bill, a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed, Noises Off follows the on and off-stage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through the fictional farce, ‘Nothing On’. From the shambolic final rehearsals before opening night in Weston-Super-Mare, to a disastrous matinee in Ashton-Under-Lyme seen entirely, and hilariously silently, from backstage, we share their final, brilliantly catastrophic performance in Stockton-on-Tees. Liza Goddard’s extensive stage comedy credits include Life of Riley, Communicating Doors, Season’s Greetings and Relatively Speaking. Matthew Kelly won the Olivier Award for
Of Mice and Men and his West End credits include Waiting for Godot, Comedians and Troilus and Cressida. Simon Shepherd’s many stage and TV credits include Peak Practice and West End productions of Posh, The Duck House, Rapture, Art and Hay Fever.
Hailed as the master of farce comedy, multi-award-winning playwright and novelist Michael Frayn has inspired a generation of comedies since his production of Noises Off first opened in 1982. Now considered a comedy classic, Frayn’s legendary play has enjoyed stagings worldwide, including five productions in the West End and three on Broadway.
Noises Off is written by Michael Frayn. Directed by Lindsay Posner, with design by Simon Higlett, lighting by Paul Pyant, sound by Gregory Clarke, composition by Will Stuart, movement and fight direction by Ruth Cooper-Brown and casting by Ginny Schiller. The Associate Director is George Jibson. Produced by Theatre Royal Bath Productions in association with Birmingham Rep. Noises Off comes to Milton Keynes Theatre from Tuesday 21st – Saturday 25th November 2023. Tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com/MiltonKeynes
