Ways to Stop Procrastinating
We are all guilty of being a procrastinator, either regularly or now and again. Working from home provides new distractions compared to the office as your home is filled with personal items, such as your TV, which you’d regularly associate with leisure. Procrastinating can feel great in the moment, but time passes by so quickly that you might not even realise you’re being distracted until a few hours later. Over 20% of the population are chronic procrastinators, excessive behaviour can take a toll on your emotional wellbeing. It can be challenging to manage yourself and become more productive. We spoke to our resident psychologist Dr Bianca Serwinski to investigate ways to avoid procrastination.
What is procrastination? Procrastination is the habit of delaying a high priority task but placing your focus on less urgent and more enjoyable activities. Procrastination can restrict your potential and lead to stress, increased frustration and anxiety to get things done. It is important to recognise the distinction between procrastination and laziness. Laziness is the unwillingness to do anything, whereas procrastinators choose to do something else.
Don’t compare yourself Procrastination pairs up with perfectionism, wasting hours amending things trying to make them perfect. A common cause of both is constantly comparing yourself and performance to others. With the digital age of social media, it can be hard not to spot how your peers are ‘succeeding’ at different aspects of their lives. Comparison with others leads to procrastination, as the fear of failure takes over with the worry that your performance might not match up. First step is to stay on your own path, limit your social media intake and ensure yourself that you don’t need everything to be perfect. Ask yourself what perfect really means to you, celebrate your successes and express gratitude for all your achievements. Set achievable goals You will be able to focus clearly if you have a clear future direction. Goals need to be set that are realistic enough to achieve in your given timeframe. Procrastination happens when you lack direction making you feel uninspired and confused. A way to overcome this is to set yourself a small
number of short-terms goals, such as 5, that are realistic and measurable. The list will give you something specific to work towards achieving daily. Balance the day with a mix of tasks, with some bringing more enjoyment than others, so you feel motivated to complete the list.
Identify your productivity cycles Every individual has their own cycle of productivity, some work better in the morning and some in the evening. A great way to reduce your tendency to procrastinate is to identify your peak times- what time of the day are you most productive? Plan your schedule around this and prioritise your most important tasks for this time. Similarly, you need to identify your slump times (the time of the day when you are least productive) and plan your breaks around this. Trying to focus and work during your slump times will only frustrate you, as you begin to put yourself down for not achieving tasks. Listen to your inner body clock and intuition as you know what is best for you. Aim to be in a flow A flow state is a mental state where you’re completely immersed in the activity that you’re completing. Informally known as ‘being in the zone’, it is an optimal state of mind in terms of productivity. It allows you to positively focus on your work and reduces the chance of procrastinating. To encourage the flow, create the right conditions for you to work in; during your productive cycle, in a quiet environment, with music or without and removing any major distractions such as your phone. Being in a state of flow is very effective and if you find you are in one, don’t stop. You will find yourself completing a lot more in a few hours in deep flow than in days of procrastination. Use timeboxing Timeboxing is a technique where you allocate specific blocks of time named ‘timeboxes’, to activities that you wish to work on. By ‘boxing’ the time out for certain tasks, it can help you feel less overwhelmed by the tasks you’ve been putting off. The set amount of time can make it seem easier to handle and ensure that you’re dedicating enough time to unfavoured tasks. Furthermore, timeboxing controls your slump time so you avoid turning your 30minute TV break into an accidental chance to binge on a new series.

Midlife Madness As I’m sure you’re aware if you’ve read these musings before, I am generally a big fan of social media. I use it to keep up to date with everything from news to recipes and isn’t it great that birthday lists are a thing of the past – there really is no excuse these days as you get helpful reminders that is so and so’s birthday – though to keep your age hidden is tricky without outright lies, useful nonetheless. And with social media you can even escape the chore of spending exorbitant amounts of money on a card, thinking what to write in it AND the trek to the post office to post it – just post on their timeline or send an ‘insta’ or snap chat – job done! I also use social media to stay in contact with mates – really useful over recent months and I even engage in debates on platforms like twitter and Linkedin. Owning my own business, I also use social media for that and find it’s a good way to not only raise brand and service awareness but also to connect with other business owners collaborate and network. So, yes, I am a fan of social media!
However, I do think some people are totally inappropriate in their use of some platforms. But before I get into that I also need to say that I am not against using social media or apps to ‘meet’ people. Let’s be honest I know several friends who have established brilliant long-term relationships with people they have met online. But as a very happily married, not as young as I was once, female I am not looking for love – frankly if I was I would use one of the huge variety of on online sites, apps or even go out and actually meet someone – much as I appreciate the current difficulties of these times in respect of social distancing and actually connecting with folks. But my beef is that given that we have all of these ways
out there to find ‘love’, ‘companionship’, a ‘soulmate’ or whatever else people are seeking, it doesn’t seem appropriate to use the usual social media channels that are used by lots of people not looking for any of the above to find romantic connections. Let me tell you straight if you respond to any of my posts with a ‘hello, beautiful, gorgeous, sexy or numerous other ‘flattering’ adjectives’ or a ‘hi good looking’ you will not get a positive response. Let’s be honest if someone came up to me at a networking event and said that my response would not be positive either but my feeling is it that people would not dare to be so direct in person – unless they were looking for a proverbial slap! So why is it that folk feel its ok to do that? I am genuinely puzzled – on a dating app yes, on an online looking for love site yes, but on regular social media? Maybe I am old fashioned or prudish but that is not what I am about.
And on any site, can I just be straight and say I never ever want to receive photos of body parts – that is a big fat definite NO, NEVER! I mean if I am honest, I cannot imagine a scenario where I ever would, but I acknowledge it seems to be something that people do – but as adults surely we have to think would the person I am sending this too actually want to receive it. Now I know that if you think you are some pin up you might answer yourself that they do. Here’s a truth bomb they probably don’t. In fact, it is akin to flashing (and I’m referring to males and females here) on first meeting. Notice I said meeting not date! Ask yourself if this was in person would I do it? Unless you can confidently answer yes don’t send the pic – better yet put your camera away some things were just not meant to be seen!!

Ways to Snack Smarter
s soon as we get into the habit of mindlessly snacking, we may find that it can take over regular mealtimes and lead to a higher intake of refined or sugar rich foods. Snacking has been given a bad reputation- but what if we told you that snacking smartly can be of great nutritional value? We spoke to Donia Hilal, nutritionist at www.personalised.co who tells us how to snack more mindfully.
A
1) Make your snacks count Snacking is often thought of as ‘excess light meals’ and ‘overeating’- but what if your snacks filled in your nutritional gaps? The Health Survey of England revealed that only 28% of adults get their 5-a-day, so why not use snacking as an easy way to get more produce in your diet? From carrot sticks dipped in hummus as an afternoon snack to frozen grapes for dessert, integrating fruit and vegetables into your snacking routine can provide you with essential vitamins and minerals you need for a healthy diet. 2) Stay hydrated Snacking can sometimes be a reaction to our body’s cravings. Whilst we may interpret that we are hungry, our body may just be signalling that we are dehydrated. Drinking water consistently throughout the day can help ease hunger pangs, feelings of tiredness and dry mouth. It may also be helpful to have some alternate sipping options such as sparkling water, herbal teas and decaffeinated coffee. Beware of added extra calories, fat, and sugar from flavoured syrups though!
3) Go for the grain We digest whole grain foods slower, so whole grain snacks can help us feel fuller for longer. As well as this, whole grain snacks can give you that extra boost of energy throughout the day. From ready to eat options such as plain popcorn, baked whole wheat tortilla chips and crackers- whole grain foods can be delicious, fast-food alternatives to support healthy weight maintenance.
4) Go nuts Nuts are a great substitute for traditional snacks such as biscuits, chocolates, and cakes, which are higher in
saturated fat and sugars. The high protein and fibre content make nuts an inexpensive and satisfying snack containing essential nutrients such as Vitamin E, Potassium and Magnesium. However, be sure to watch your portion sizes as they are high in calories. The healthiest nuts to snack on include almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamias, and walnuts. Always go for unsalted nuts where possible to avoid adding too much sodium to your daily diet.
5) Munch mindfully We are all guilty of munching mindlessly in front of the TV, only to look down and wonder where our snack has gone! Try snacking without distractions as this will help you appreciate what is on your plate, instead of overeating. This does not mean you cannot ever enjoy your favourite film with a snack. Opt for healthier options and a reduced serving size such as air-popped popcorn with a sprinkle of parmesan on top. If you still find snacking to be mindless and ill-timed, plan your meals and integrate snacking into your routine. 6) Treat yourself When we mindlessly snack on food, we lose our enjoyment with it. Don’t deprive yourself with your diet and allow 12 treats a week. Practice eating your treats mindfully by bringing all your senses to a meal, taking small bites, chewing thoroughly, and eating slowly. This way, you will savour every bite and not fall into a habit of binge eating. Remember, treating yourself does not only mean indulging in cheat days, but it means treating yourself with compassion and curiosity too.
7) Combat the underlying cause Often times we find ourselves snacking to take our mind off certain emotions or situations. Whilst comfort foods can relieve stress and anxiety in the moment, if the underlying issues are not addressed, eating can become an unhealthy addiction. If snacking is used as a coping mechanism, speak to a professional that can advise you how to deal with your emotions without using food. Whether this be a therapist to talk through your problems with, or a nutritionist who can work through your diet with you- there is always support to be given!

Embracing Life’s Seasons The world operates on cycles and seasons. The earth moves around the sun, the moon orbits the earth. Seasons change and the physical world (while different in different parts of the globe) moves through times of falling back, but also times growth and rebirth.
It is the same with us as humans – there are some significant seasons in human life, childhood, puberty, childbearing years and the menopause. It may be more obvious with female bodies but all our bodies consist of organs and systems that are impacted by our environment, yet are wonderfully resilient, adaptable and have a tremendous capacity for recovery. We are not robots.
But over the last few hundred years there seems to be an increasing ‘demand’ for us to behave as machines. We are expected to ‘perform’ in a similar way each and every day. Follow the same routines, behave in predictable ways, often shutting ourselves off to the signals our bodies may be giving us that we need to slow down, or have a bit more balance in our lives. The result has been an epidemic in stress related disorders and mental health issues. Maybe we need to take a few lessons from the natural world.
Each season fulfils a specific purpose and we harness the potential of that when we work with the change not against them. Planting our summer flowers in the autumn would simply mean they would probably be killed by frost, they certainly wouldn’t thrive.
Of course, we can choose to ignore the season but if we dressed for summer in the depths of winter, we’d feel the difference. So, the logical approach is to embrace the seasons – which in terms of nature we do and many of us will be delving into drawers to find scarves and hats ready for the autumn and winter – to be prepared. But what about us? Life has seasons, not just the ones I mentioned before but times of rapid growth, times of challenge when just getting through the day is enough, times when life feels like a day at the beach. All are part of human experience and all are essential. But all may call for us to embrace them and adapt.
Embrace them for what they are! It seems we are all seeking perfection and consistency. Social media as we know is often full of the good times, the successes but not many people post about the dark days, the days when we need to lay low and recover and get to where we can pick ourselves up. Accepting that we can’t always be consistent either physically or mentally. Instead we ned to learn to listen to our bodies and minds – what are they telling us what do we need to do to nurture ourselves and take care of our bodies and minds. Every season will pass, some may feel like they take forever but they will pass.
Listen to Your Body and Mind Whether we acknowledge it or not our body is speaking to us all day long, telling us what we need. Our back may ache after sitting at a computer so if we are sensible, we pick up the signal and choose to move around. The problem is we have all be ‘taught’ to ignore our many of our body’s signals, we are urged to keep going, push through the pain, or even pretend we are okay when our body or mind is telling us quite clearly that the way we are acting is causing us problems. Of course, we all know the consequences of not listening, sadly they can be burn out and illness. We know this, many of us might have experienced times of this yet still we find it hard to listen to our body. A good way of doing it is through creating small amounts of time to be still and tune you’re your body and mind. How does it feel, are there areas of tension or pain, is you mind still or fretful and anxious? Respond to the messages you get from your body and mind. But listening is only the first part. The next step is about responding. When we are aware of pain, discomfort, tiredness or stress and anxiety then we need to take steps to nurture out body and mind not just carry on regardless assuming everything will get better because that rarely happens. An even better plan is to appreciate the cyclic nature of life and build routines that support physical and mental wellbeing. a walk around ampthill istoric market towns always hold a certain appeal. Whether it’s the cobbled streets, hidden alleyways or just the community spirit and memories they evoke, one things for certain we all love a stroll around them.
H
Which is why a trip to the small town of Ampthill in Bedfordshire and its surrounding villages is a must.
On the outskirts of the town is the shell of a 17th-century m a n s i o n , HOUGHTON HOUSE. Commanding magnificent views, and reputedly the inspiration for the ‘House Beautiful’ in John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. Built around 1615 for Mary, Dowager Countess of Pembroke, it is the perfect place to explore this autumn time. Move down the hill to the main town, full of cafes, boutique and antique shops, a wide variety of restaurants, and pubs, along with its regular Thursday market.
If you’re a lover of Italian food, then a must stop is DONATELLO’S PIZZERIA the perfect place for lunch or an evening meal with friends or family. Serving freshly made delicious traditional and contemporary Italian style food, you’ll shut your eyes and think you’re in Italy!
Once you’ve refuelled, and browsed a few antiques, it’s time to start thinking about making your home cosier now that the darker nights and colder days are drawing in, and what could be cosier than a fireplace or stove to keep you warm. Whether you’re looking for something traditional or contemporary, heat efficient or decorative, wood, gas or electric – AMPTHILL FIREPLACES is the place to visit, with so many gorgeous fires and stoves you’ll be spoilt for choice. A quick drink in one of the many pubs or a cup of tea and cake at the Rendezvous Café situated within THE RUFUS CENTRE (just on the outskirts in Flitwick) is a perfect way to end the day. Not only can you visit the café, it is also the ideal place to host a wedding, christening, birthday party, business meeting and so much more (once we are safely allowed to do so).
So be sure to grab a friend, wrap up warm, and get visiting the historic market town of Ampthill!

Roasted Baby Pumpkins with Chestnut, Cherry & Dolcelatte Stuffing ‘The combination of different textures and tastes make these a real treat’
Method
Ingredients
6 small winter squash or pumpkins , each around the size of a large grapefruit Olive oil 6 fresh bay leaves 200 g wild rice 2 red onions 180 g vac-packed chestnuts 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary 150 g Dolcelatte cheese 90 g dried sour cherries
Preheat the oven to 190°C/375°F/gas 5. Cut the pumpkin or squash tops off about a quarter of the way down. Next, using a sturdy spoon, hollow out the centres, removing the seeds, and discard. Rub the pumpkins all over with oil and season the insides generously with sea salt and black pepper. Nestle into a roasting tin that’s large enough to hold all six, tucking the tops in wherever they will fit. Put a bay leaf into each hollow and roast for 50 minutes to 1 hour, or until soft. Meanwhile, rinse and drain the rice, tip into a pan and cover with plenty of water. Bring to the boil and simmer briskly for about 30 minutes or until just tender. Drain well and put to one side. While the rice cooks, peel, halve and slice the onions. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan over a medium heat, add the onion and a large pinch of salt, then cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until soft. Roughly chop the chestnuts, then pick and finely chop the rosemary leaves. Add both to the softened onions. Reduce the heat slightly, and continue to cook for about 10 minutes, stirring whenever the onions begin to catch. Chop up the Dolcelatte, then stir into the onions along with the cooked wild rice and dried sour cherries. Season well. Divide this mixture between the roasted pumpkins, removing the bay leaves first. Return to the oven for 5 minutes, to warm everything through. Delicious served with peppery salad leaves. Chocolate Pear Pudding “Made with brioche or Italian Panettone with dark chocolate chips, this bread and butter pudding is perfect for autumn evenings”
Ingredients
50g butter, softened 5 slices brioche or Panettone (weighing about 250g in total) 2 South African pears, peeled, cored and sliced 50g dark chocolate, chopped into chunks (or use dark chocolate chips) 2 large eggs 250ml semi-skimmed milk 150ml single cream 30g caster sugar 1tsp vanilla extract
Chocolate Sauce 2tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder 2tbsp cornflour 2tbsp caster sugar 50g dark chocolate drops 300ml semi-skimmed milk
Method Use a small knob of the butter to grease a 1.5 litre baking dish. Spread the remaining butter over the slices of brioche or Panettone. Cut into smaller pieces, then arrange in the dish with the pears. Sprinkle the chocolate chunks over the top.
Beat together the eggs, milk, single cream, caster sugar and vanilla extract. Leave for a few minutes so that the sugar dissolves, then slowly pour into the dish. Cover the dish with cling film and leave to stand for at least 30 minutes. If you want to cook the pudding later, refrigerate until required.
Preheat the oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C/Gas Mark 4. Bake the pudding for 30-35 minutes until puffed up and golden brown. Cool for a few minutes while making the sauce.
Put all the ingredients for the chocolate sauce into a non-stick saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly with a small whisk until smooth and thickened. Serve with the pudding.
Cook’s Tip: Serve with single cream or crème fraiche instead of chocolate sauce.

Fry’s Footie Corner As I write this column, we, Peterborough United, are awaiting news from the Premier League and the Government on a financial bail-out to help cover the costs of supporters not being allowed in the stadiums.
That needs to happen, and quickly, because if it doesn’t, clubs will literally disappear in a click of the fingers. No fans mean no revenue, it is as simple as that. It is the toughest time that I have ever experienced in football. It feels incredible to literally look back to the start of the year and the optimism, the hope, the sheer joy from football, that has been taken away. It is not the same. I am fortunate that I get to watch the behind closed doors matches, but there is no emotion, no theatre, all that comes from the audience, the noise, the buzz, the excitement – it has to be a stop gap.
Even in the games that are taking place at the highest level, things are not quite right. It seems ludicrous to be discussing the handball law when we find ourselves in the position that we are in, but the controversy in decision-making by referees and the Video Assistant Referees on this matter had everyone talking.
It wasn’t something that was a problem five years ago, but if you start making subtle changes to a law, eventually it catches up with you. Now we find ourselves in a position that if the ball strikes your arm in the box, whether you are looking or not, whether it is intentional or not, it is handball. You will have people literally booting the ball at players from a yard out just to win a penalty kick if you are not careful. Roy Hodgson spoke about it and he is right, and he should know, he has been in the game almost as long as me! I sincerely hope that when I next write a column for Affinity that all of the clubs are still in existence, but the alarming fact is, when Macclesfield went out of business a month ago, nobody seemed to bat an eyelid.
They will start taking notice when the domino effect comes into full force. I really hope that we are in a position where we have been safeguarded of our future because of the intervention of the Premier League or the Government when you next hear from me. Stay Safe

Sustainable Treehouse Luxury apan's subtropical southern prefecture of Okinawa is set to welcome the opening of a brand new sustainable luxury eco resort in Spring 2021. Designed with the concept of bringing its guests closer to nature, Treeful Treehouse will offer secluded private rooms nestled amongst the jungle canopy alongside a communal Aerohouse space and activities for visitors to explore the local area.
J
Located in rural Nago on the north side of Okinawa Island, the resort will be home to four majestic individual treehouse rooms on the banks of the Genka River, each able to sleep two guests. The rooms have been individually crafted to sit seamlessly within the natural environment, built around the existing flora in the area, whilst still providing a luxurious glamping style setting and modern facilities including air conditioning. The wooden treehouse rooms boast 360 degree views and an outside seating area complete with cosy hammocks ideal for night-time stargazing. The unusual egg treehouse room, inspired by boats and crafted by a local yacht builder, will offer guests the
chance to sleep within a truly unique cocooned space up high in the trees.
The communal Aerohouse is equipped with bathrooms, rest and relaxation rooms and a kitchen connected to the treehouse rooms via a series of floating walkways and jungle paths. The resort's Floating DNA Catwalk, inspired by the vertebrae of a spine, connects the ground to the tree deck making the resort accessible to wheelchair users.
Once open, the resort will offer guests a series of excursions and experiences to explore the local area including jungle trekking, kayaking, paddle boarding and yoga. The resort is also passionate about giving back to the local community and has already embarked on projects in the surrounding area, including reinstating a water mill at the site of the Shizogumui Waterfall which was last home to a mill over 100 years ago. The resort is powered purely by its own solar energy, omitting the need to use any fossil fuels. For more information visit: www.treeful.net

Beat the Quarantine Lottery with a Luxurious Stay at
Cap Maison, Saint Lucia
oct20.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 28/09/2020 20:52 Page 53
Choosing a holiday destination currently is like playing the lottery. One country that will not be appearing on the UK’s quarantine list anytime soon is Saint Lucia. The tiny nation has the lowest COVID-19 rate in the Caribbean, and the Centre for Disease Control has reduced its rating to the lowest level 1, one of only eight countries globally to be ranked this low. Boutique hotel Cap Maison, which is a Covid-19 certified hotel, opens its doors this month on October 10th offering villa-based accommodation that combines social distancing with luxury. Cap Maison is a family run boutique villa resort, located on the northernmost tip of Saint Lucia. Spread over three acres of tropical landscaped grounds, with only 50 beautifully appointed rooms and villas, Cap Maison provides a safer, more socially distanced option than a large hotel. The hotel’s magnificent elevated seafront location with views of the Caribbean Sea and across to the neighbouring island of Martinique, offers the perfect romantic isolation spot for couples to reconnect after the stresses of lockdown. As a Covid-19 certified hotel, it means that the hotel has met government requirements for sanitation protocols, social distancing, and other virusrelated policies.
Cap Maison’s Villas offer unparalleled privacy, personalised concierge service, and private pools in an idyllic location. For guests wishing to stay longer, for a ‘workcation’, monthly rates are available, and guests have their own ‘home away from home’ in paradise. They can have access to tutors for their children, and high-speed internet facilitates for work tasks. With two to four-bedroom options available, villas have superb master bedrooms with additional interconnecting bedrooms that can be furnished with twin beds to suit a family. All rooms are en-suite and villas come with a fully equipped kitchen, with private chef options available, as well a dining and living room. Daily housekeeping and launderette services are also available. Cap Maison has access to a pretty, secluded sandy beach and two of the best restaurants on the island, the Cliff at Cap, with Caribbean Chef of the Year Craig Jones at its helm and the more relaxed Naked Fisherman, nestled on the natural cove. Guests can spend their days on the beach, taking part in water-based activities like scuba diving and sailing, going on scenic hikes, cooking lessons, or taking a boat trip along the beautiful coastline.
The postcard-perfect island of Saint Lucia opened its borders to international arrivals in June, with weekly British Airways flights now running from London Gatwick. It is essential that tourists confirm accommodation at a Covid-19 certified hotel when travelling to St Lucia and are required to take a Covid-19 test within seven days of traveling to the island. BOOK IT
Rooms at Cap Maison start at £360 per night including breakfast (www.capmaison.com) and villas start from £550 per night for a two-bedroom villa.

The nearby natural beauty spots of Hengistbury Head and Brownsea Island are stunning whatever the weather, while further afield The Purbecks to the west and the New Forest just across the Hampshire border are well worth a day trip.
