Welcome... H Everyone This month the Affinity office has been crazy, we have been working on this issue, our A/W Wedding magazine (which is out the middle of October) to coincide with our Wedding Showcase at Bedford Corn Exchange on Sunday 2nd November and our annual Charity Ball this year in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer which coincides nicely with October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each month 1,000 women in the UK die from breast cancer, so we thought we would do our bit to raise much needed funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer's work so that one day this figure say ZERO! A couple of visits to our nations capital took us to The Langham Hotel in London for the European Luxury Lifestyle Awards page 34 and Hampton Court Palace for the Concours of Elegance where we were surrounded by hundreds of the rarest vintage cars from all over the world page 65.

With all our regular features, including a review on the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse at the Doubletree Hilton in Cambridge (page 48) Haloween treats (page 71), a bit of Kelloggs nostalgia (page 14) and so much more, this is an issue not to be missed! Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and Like us on FB to keep up with all the latest Affinity Gossip. Have a Spooktacular Halloween.

Mad About Kelloggs!

MAD Beauty Unveil Exclusive Collaboration with Kellogg's The new collaboration between MAD Beauty and Kellogs is bound to have every woman adding a little nostalgia to their makeup bag! Juia Cash MAD Beauty's creative director told us “We have all grown up with Kellogg's Frosties, Rice Krispies and so many of their images evoke a strong feeling of nostalgia – even with some that were in circulation before many of us were born. They just seem to have the ability to trigger a sense of instant recognition. MAD Beauty's mission statement is 'serious about making cosmetics fun', and this just hit the right note.” The company has named its first selections 'Decades' which Julia says simply describes how MAD Beauty will be bringing products to the market. “We have taken images from the 50's and 70's and applied them to a range of cosmetic related products.” Whether you're after Fifties Vintage or Seventies Retro, the collection offers a range of beauty products from flavoured lip balms, beauty bags, manicure sets and bath essentials. “Kellogg proudly state that they provide families with 'better breakfasts that lead to better days', and, at MAD Beauty, we're happy to offer products that aim to continue that 'better day' feeling with our exclusive range of cosmetics and bath products that are decorated with the Vintage Kellogg's imagery. Our aim, after all, has always been to create products that make people smile!” They’ve certainly made us smile! www.madbeauty.com

Bedroom Blues

W

hen you are in a long standing relationship it’s easy to think that you know everything about your other ‘half’ and it can be a bit disconcerting when you realise there may in fact be some serious incompatibilities – especially when these are related to the bedroom.

when indulging in a bit of bedtime reading. Also I must confess to a frisson of pleasure when I look at the bed – all neatly made and inviting. An inviting bed is one of the many reasons that I just love staying in hotels but it is clearly unreasonable at my income level to have someone come into the house just to make my bed look inviting!

Now before you all either stop reading for fear of being shocked OR continue reading hoping for something that resembles a few pages of fifty shades – I’m actually talking the physical rather than metaphorical bedroom.

Ok, so I know there are all sorts of ways a bed can look inviting but I was leaving aside uniformed hunks in favour of interior design type ideas. As you can imagine the tasteful throw at the bottom of the bed hasn’t gone down a storm either. There also seems to be a bit of an issue with the lights, which of course match and add a real ambience, a kind of subtle glow. But apparently they are not bright enough to read a book by. My response was that you don’t really need a bright light when you have a kindle or another kind of device (I am talking reading devices!)

The central problem is actually some rather innocent looking cushions. You know the sort, co-ordinating colours and you pile them on your bed after making it, to give your room, or more precisely your bed, that inviting, well dressed look that you see in show homes, hotels or magazines. Which I suppose is exactly the point, no one actually lives in those places. I would hazard a guess that among womenfolk, I am not alone in having an aversion to climbing into an unmade bed? I suspect not. But certainly most of the males I have known well enough to understand a little of their bedroom habits ( I’m not talking about lovers but sons, lodgers, students, and numerous other male relatives and guests) have absolutely no problem clambering into a bed that is not only unmade but could actually have something living in it without batting an eyelid.

The other thing I always appreciate about hotels is the lovely smell in the room so I bought a few of those scented candles and a nice incense burner. He made some sort of comment the first night but later that week he accused me of trying to re-invent my slightly hippy youth by smoking plant products. Really! He kept opening the windows and it was all a bit chilly, so I must confess I jettisoned those. But I do think the bedroom should be a haven of peace and tranquillity so I invested in some of that spa type music that you listen to when you have a massage. Now I didn’t expect he would like that but it was for me, so on a ‘Match of the Day’ night I took myself off to bed with said music playing on iphone docking station but ran out of plugs, so carefully positioned it so that I could reach to turn it off.

And although this is a slight digression – how long would men go before they thought about washing sheets and quilt covers - or is that just the men in my house!! But back to cushions – this has certainly made things get rougher in the bedroom – strictly no handcuffs or whips – but cushions do get launched to the furthest corner of the room on a nightly basis. Why? I remain mystified – I like the cushions! Not only are they decorative but they are great to prop yourself up with

It was remarkably effective, so much so I was asleep before I could turn it off and some while later I was awoken by unhappy expletives as he tripped over the wire I had trailed to position it so that I could turn it off.

18

I wonder what he would think about a water bed??

Treatment of the Month

N

Murads Resurgence Renewal Facial The Rapid Exfoliator is then used, this offers intense, instant and long-lasting hydration, it also helps to clear pores and improve skin texture.

ot only has my favourite product house Murad opened their very own space within John Lewis in Cambridge, last month they opened one just up the road in John Lewis at Milton Keynes.

The face, neck, décolleté is then massaged and a special rejuvenating treatment is carried out on the décolleté.

The Murad counter within John Lewis stocks every single product Murad produces, allowing you to try before you buy thus, ensuring your skin gets the exact product it needs.

A firming mask is applied, and whilst this was taking effect I enjoyed a relaxing hand and arm massage. Finally, the skin is hydrated and protected with Sheer Lustre Day Moisture, Soothing Lip Care to the lips and Essential-C Eye Cream SPF 15 around the eye area.

The Murad therapist has her very own treatment room away from the hustle and bustle of shoppers and I went along to try it out. All facials begin with a skin analysis from the new Youth Cam Skin Scanner camera that looks deep into the surface layers of the skin to detect hidden skin concerns which will eventually appear at the surface of the skin, this then helps the therapist decide which facial will best suit you.

My skin was glowing and looked visibly smoother and more youthful looking (this is a facial I will definitely be repeating). Murad Resurgence Renewal Facial £65 for 60mins John Lewis, Milton Keynes 01908 325389

The Resurgence Renewal Facial was what I was going to experience, it started with my skin and eyes being deeply cleansed with Murad’s Renewing Cleansing Cream and Eye Makeup Remover.

Indulgence

A Day of

With the nights drawing in and days becoming cooler it is a well known fact that we spend longer working in the A/W months than we do in the S/S ones. Which is why The Day Spa at Whittlebury Hall is even more appealing having added some seasonal treatments to their spa day package to make sure you get away and give yourself some proper ME time, easing you out of your everyday routine, taking you on a journey to rejuvenate and refresh your body and mind. After a particularly busy couple of weeks I was certainly in need of a little bit of relaxation and pampering, so off I went with my husband to indulge in this new Day Spa Package. Set amongst acres of fields in the Northampton countryside you feel yourself already relaxing as you wind your way down the long drive towards the grand Georgian country house that is Whittlebury Hall. Our day began by us enjoying the stimulating Heat and Ice experiences which are set around a hydrotherapy pool. Housed around this is a salt steam room, sauna, an ice cave - where you can cool your steaming skin off with little chunks of ice - the caldarium (which radiates heat from walls, floors, seats and reclining areas), and the sanarium. It is all designed to build your body temperature up gradually and then quickly cool it back down, allowing your body to experience sensations brought on by dramatic changes in temperature. The first of our treatments then followed. I had chosen The Day Spa Nectarine Burst & Sweet Honey Glaze, this is a truly indulgent skin exfoliation with a burst of Nectarine and Sweet Honey, once the exfoliator had been showered off the therapist continued with a soothing back, neck and scalp massage which hit every button in the relaxation corner. My husband enjoyed The Day Spa Well-Being Massage which he said was heavenly, the pressure was exactly how he liked it, the treatment time for both these were 50 minutes which as always goes too quickly. A little lounge by the pool before heading for our two course buffet lunch.

Spa Holistic Experience, a mini Reflexology and mini Indian Head Massage, this is just a taster of reflexology - it was calming and soothing and the ambience of the treatment room just added to the whole tranquil experience. To finish our day off we relaxed around the pool sipping the lemon and ginger herbal tea that is freely on offer and enjoyed the last few hours of rejuvenating, unwinding and escaping from everyday life. The Day Spa Package with seasonal treatments is priced from just ÂŁ109 per person and something I highly recommend.

After lunch a little more pampering was required via our next treatments which for both of us was The Day 22

REVITALISE YOUR WINTER WORKOUT Do you need a little motivation to keep training up through the winter months?

We caught up with top tennis player Belinda Bencic to find out how she keeps up with training during the off season and what we can do to revitalise our own winter workouts. Belinda says; “Winter training in the off season is important for me and many other athletes because it gives us more time to work on building a strong foundation and also the chance to change any technical aspects of my game. I wouldn’t be able to do either of these during the season as I’m generally maintaining fitness levels, motivation and trying to stay injury free!”

26

october2014.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 18/09/2014 18:23 Page 25

Here are my tips for the off-season training:

1: Set yourself goals - You need a plan for exactly where you want to go and what you want to improve. For example, last season I wanted to improve my serve. I wanted more power so I could better make the transition from the Junior’s tennis circuit to the Pros. I changed my grip slightly and hit hundreds of serves every day. It definitely helped me to have a strong season in 2014. Revitalise Your Workout: Why not enter an event or race for February/March to have your own goal to aim for.

2: Warm up and cool down properly - This is so important in the colder months. Even athletes can get a bit lazy with warming up but it’s what gets your muscles loose and your body ready for a tough work out. I like dynamic stretching to warm up – holding each stretch for at least 6 seconds and then release and stretch again. Cooling down is just as important, I spend 10 minutes doing a light jog and then cycle for 15 minutes on the stationary bike. Revitalise Your Workout: Have Nelsons arnicare Arnica Cooling Gel to rub in post-workout or relax in the bath with Nelsons arnicare Arnica Bath & Massage Balm after a cold day.

3: Interval Training - For tennis players, I think interval training is important because you work intensely for short bursts but then have 15 seconds to recover between points and a bit longer in between games. To build my fitness levels, I go on the track and do several sets of sprints up the straights and then slowly jog round the corners. I do 5 laps of this a day. I also run two miles three times a week. Revitalise Your Workout: Incorporate 20 minutes of interval training into your exercise, try sprinting between the trees in the park or the lampposts on your street.

4: Muscle Building - I work on building muscle strength during the off season. My tip for this would be to choose the time of day that suits you best. For example, I never do heavy weight lifting in the morning if I am playing tennis in the afternoon. I always start with tennis and then keep lifting for the afternoon. Otherwise, my body becomes stiff from lifting weights and I am more likely to get an injury playing tennis. Revitalise Your Workout: Do squats and weight when you get inside from a run. Try using cans of beans as weights!

5: Have fun. Most importantly, try and make the training sessions fun. I do them with a hitting partner, which is usually my dad or my brother. Yes, you have to be a serious professional but you also have to enjoy what you do. Lifting weights by yourself is boring so I like to do things with my team. Revitalise Your Workout: Ask a friend to join you after work for some support and get fit together!

Is Stress a Trigger to Developing

Alzheimer’s Early?

30

october2014.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 18/09/2014 18:23 Page 29

L

ast month according to The Daily Mail a report by the Alzheimer's Society warns that twice as many adults are developing dementia in mid-life than previously thought.

Your brain needs regular, restful sleep in order to function at optimum capacity. Sleep deprivation not only leaves you cranky and tired, but impairs your ability to think, problem-solve, and process, store, and recall information. Deep, dreamy sleep is critical for memory formation and retention. If nightly sleep deprivation is slowing your thinking and affecting your mood, you may be at greater risk of developing symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. The vast majority of adults need at least 8 hours of sleep per night. Any less, and productivity and creativity suffers.

There are now 42,325 cases of early onset dementia in the UK – which occurs before the age of 65 – previously there were only thought to be 17,000 cases. This includes 2,010 in their 40s, 7,700 cases in their 50s, 32,000 in their 60s and 707 cases in their 30s. For many years, we've been told that there's little we can do to prevent Alzheimer's disease, and other types of dementia, but hope for the best and wait for a pharmaceutical cure. But the truth is you can reduce your risk by eating right, exercising, staying mentally and socially active, and keeping stress in check. By leading a brain-healthy lifestyle, you may be able to prevent Alzheimer's symptoms and slow down, or even reverse, the process of deterioration.

Stress that is chronic or severe takes a heavy toll on the brain, leading to shrinkage in a key memory area of the brain known as the hippocampus, hampering nerve cell growth, and increasing your risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Yet simple daily tools can minimize its harmful effects. Get your stress levels in check with these proven techniques • Breathe! Stress alters your breathing rate and impacts oxygen levels in the brain. Quiet your stress response with deep, abdominal breathing. Restorative breathing is powerful, simple, and free!

Quick thinking. Fast recall. Sharp memory. When you're at the top of your mental game, you don't worry about getting older. Because you still have the focused brain power of your youth.

• Schedule daily relaxation activities. Keeping stress under control requires regular effort. Make relaxation a priority, whether it's a walk in the park, playtime with your dog, yoga, or a soothing bath.

But to stay on top, you need a steady supply of oxygen to your brain. Then your brain can think creatively... solve problems... and stay fog-free. So as the ages lower for those of us that are suseptable to Alzeimers what can we do to help ourselves? Luckily, there are a number of ways to get plenty of oxygen to your brain.

• Nourish inner peace. Most scientists acknowledge a strong mind-body connection, and various studies associate spirituality with better brain health. Regular meditation, prayer, reflection, and religious practice may immunize you against the damaging effects of stress.

The six pillars of a brain-healthy lifestyle are: 1: Regular Exercise 2: Healthy Diet 4: Mental Stimulation 4: Quality Sleep 5: Stress Management 6: An Active Social Life

An active social life Human beings are highly social creatures. We don't thrive in isolation, and neither does our brain. Studies show that the more connected we are, the better we fare on tests of memory and cognition. Staying socially active may even protect against Alzheimer's disease and dementia, so make your social life a priority.

The first is physical exertion. This gets the blood flowing and provides more oxygen to the blood vessels in your brain so you can have clear recall.

Will Supplements Help? A Healthy diet is vital and a Mediterranean diet is often recommended. In our mind, eating healthily comes naturally when you listen to your body but there are also supplements that are worth considering to supplement your diet. Folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D, magnesium, and fish oil are believed to preserve and improve brain health. Studies of vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, coenzyme Q10, and turmeric have yielded less conclusive results, but may also be beneficial in the prevention or delay of Alzheimer's and dementia symptoms.

Those who continue learning new things throughout life and challenging their brains are less likely to develop 'Brain Fog' and then be susceptible to more serious diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia, so make it a point to stay mentally active. In essence, you need to “use it or lose it.” Activities involving multiple tasks or requiring communication, interaction, and organization offer the greatest protection. Set aside time each day to stimulate your brain. Cross-training with these brain-boosting activities will help keep you mentally sharp: 31

A Little Luxury On 29th August, we joined guests from all over Europe at The Langham Hotel in London for the European Luxury Lifestyle Awards Ceromomy 2014. Ladies in elegant dresses and gentlemen in immaculate suits gathered to congratulate the winners, whilst enjoying champagne, a gala dinner and cabaret. The highlight of the evening being the after party with an amazing performance from the awesome jazz band Ronnie Scott Rejects. Poker chips and the numbers on the tables in the form of playing cards created an atmosphere of Casino Royale style. After all the excitement and expectations, the winners were announced, each receiveing a certificate and a beautiful unique Golden Crown, made specifically for the awards by the official jewellery partner Faraone Mennella. Best of the best were congratulated by guests such as : Emma Miller, model and luxury blogger; Richard Crawford, luxury lifestyle interviewer, video producer and host, representative of Eat Love Savor; Chere Di Bosco, Editor in Chief at Eluxe Magazine; Ray Witter, the representative of Just Luxe journal; Grace Kennedy, founder of Grace Kennedy events and Mayfair Luxury Weddings, Britain’s first Original and most successful Celebrity London Wedding Planner; Rebeсca Robins – a honorary judge of Luxury Lifestyle Awards, representative of Interbrand company and others. remember growing up with the idea that it was somehow better to give than to receive. It is true that I had a religious upbringing and the sentiment that it is good to give resonates with a lot of different faiths. But in my work with clients it is apparent that a lot of people love to give - in terms of their time, their expertise, their support, their friendship, their love and their acceptance. In fact many give and go on giving until they find themselves exhausted, yet very often those same people find it very hard to receive.

reciprocate in some way. But think about when YOU give, is your first thought what you will get back? If it is, then you maybe need to question your own motives for giving. Because most people when they give, do so because they really want to, sometimes they may do things from a sense of duty, but not usually for what they will get back - as humans we do things for others simply because we like to give. So it is also logical to receive without feeling that we need to ‘match’ every gift or good deed we happen to receive.

We Don’t Deserve It It sounds a bit heavy but the bottom line is often we find it hard to receive because there is a little voice inside telling us that we don’t deserve it. Why should someone want to do something for us? How can that person want to be our friend, spend time with us or whatever. That is something that does need addressing because YOU are worth it! YOU do deserve it. If the voice inside is saying otherwise then there are probably some real self- esteem issues lurking there and it would be wise to deal with them.

The same is true in terms of physical gifts, often we worry that a gift may not seem generous enough, and if someone gives us a gift and we haven’t reciprocated, we can get ourselves in a right state. Just the other day I commented on some nice headphones and the owner said that he had two identical pairs and I could have one and instead of simply being gracious and saying “Thanks, that’d be lovely.” I found 101 reasons why I couldn’t possibly accept them. Why is that, I wondered. In many ways receiving is an innate state. Babies and small children quite literally have to ‘take’ to survive and we could learn a lot from them. As we grow we become conditioned to NOT receiving, or at least to receive when we deem it is appropriate, accepting presents when it is an occasion for example. But apart from that our mind set is often more about giving. How many times have you heard someone say “oh no I couldn’t” or “don’t put yourself out on my account”.

I think that the most difficult thing is allowing yourself to be loved, so receiving the love and feeling like you deserve it is a pretty big struggle. I suppose that's what I've learnt recently, to allow myself to be loved. Nicole Kidman

The Impact The real problem lies in the fact that if we are unable to accept ‘things’ we might also find it hard to accept ‘emotions’. Working for many years with children who have experienced trauma and rejection, it was apparent that one thing they all had in common was difficulty in accepting or receiving any kind of award or prize or even praise. Which seems strange at first but, of course, comes from a belief that they are not ‘deserving’, in essence their self-worth is so low that they can’t accept anything from others. Understandable for people who have been hurt or rejected – it’s the safe approach, building walls to protect oneself from further hurt or rejection. But we all know that while walls, whether physical or emotional, help us feel more secure they also keep out lots of good stuff.

In fact there are many reasons why we might find it hard to receive but to live life to the full we need to deal with those reasons, or they will impede and restrict us in other areas of life as well.

Misplaced Pride It sounds strange but if we struggle to say yes when people offer us things, sometimes, the reason is a misplaced pride. The ‘I don’t need help’ attitude, which is understandable and something that we probably all feel from time to time. But if we look at this more deeply and start to question it, we can see that actually that is a bit arrogant. There is someone, wanting to give you something and we rack our brains for reasons to say ‘NO’. It’s not only ungrateful, it’s actually quite rude and possibly uncaring. The giver has feelings too, as we all know because often the people who find it tough to receive, excel at giving. It’s okay to feel proud about things we have done or achieved but to feel unable to accept the help, support, gifts, praise or love of others often comes from a misplaced pride.

An Alternative Being open to receive is an attitude that can help us in every walk of life, relationships, jobs, family and friends and if we are secure enough to be able to accept graciously the chances are we will also be confident as individuals, accepting of ourselves and others. I’m not what happened to me – I am what I choose to become Carl Jung

Marco Pierre White’s

We went along to sample the delights of this hotel and restaurant and certainly weren’t disappointed, after checking into our room which was light, airy and modern with our own private balcony, we spent a little time relaxing on the balcony with a glass of wine before getting ready for dinner

ituated on the banks of the River Cam is the DoubleTree by Hilton Cambridge offering views of the Cam (complete with ducks, swans, geese and, of course, punters), only a few minutes walk to the town the DoubleTree is an excellent base for exploring the city’s historic attractions, its varied shopping, as well as its lively music and theatre scene.

With wonderful views of the River Cam, the restaurant is perfect for romantic dinners, business lunches or family celebrations.

Whilst waiting for our starters we were brought appetisers of pork scratchings and marinated mixed olives which certainly whetted out appetites. My choice of starter was a cocktail of prawns which were juicy and succulent, crispy fried calamari, tender, fresh and light. Lemon and rosemary free-range chicken, truffle chips, rocket and parmesan salad followed. This was delicious; the chicken was moist and tender with an assortment of flavours provided from the lemon, rosemary and truffle chips - the whole dish was delightful. Of course one of us had to sample the steak, so the 16oz T Bone Steak and an extra side of four king prawns was my husbands choice, it was clear the beef was going to be fab, but he was unprepared for just how finely done it was. The meat was cooked just so: seared on the outside and practically brimming with juices inside, the king prawns were meaty and fresh. I love desserts but I really didn’t have any room left, so I left it to my husband who chose the sticky toffee pudding, it certainly didn’t disappoint. It was a moist, homemade, sticky toffee pudding truly delightful. After an impeccable dining experience we retired to the bar for a couple of cocktails made by the hotels resident mixologist, before enjoying a restful nights sleep. The service and food at breakfast the next morning, was just as perfect. A little punting after breakfast was the perfect end to our stay. Our overall verdict: Service in the hotel and restaurant was impeccable, presentation perfect and food delicious, but don’t just take my word for it go and experience it for yourself. A delicious Chicken dish that has just the right amount of flavours that are just perfect with asparagus.

Ingredients 8oz asparagus, trimmed and cut into1-inch pieces 2/3 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp ground pepper 1 tbs canola oil 1 shallot, thinly sliced 1/2 cup white wine 1/3 cup reduced-fat sour cream 1 tsp dried tarragon 2 tsp lemon juice 2/3 cup grated Gruyere cheese

Reduce heat to medium-low; stir in sour cream, tarragon, lemon juice and the reserved asparagus until combined. Return the chicken to the pan and turn to coat with the sauce. Sprinkle cheese on top of each piece of chicken, cover and continue cooking until the cheese is melted, approx 2 minutes.

The main focus of dining is primarily based on Bohemia’s tasting menus. We opted for the Pescatorian (Fish) menu and the Vegetarian menu. Our dining experience began with the

Bread that was brought to the table in a Hessian sack, where it had just been removed from the oven having been made from scratch and the seaweed butter - yes seaweed was literally the icing on the cake! The Tasting menus both consisted of dishes that were fresh, succulent and an absolute treat. The mouthful of smoked haddock served with an egg yolk and mustard ice cream, onto which was poured a smoked haddock velouté, was unforgettable - You mix the egg yolk with the sauce yourself and the result is a smoky, smooth delight. Turbot was served with cauliflower cream, capers, pickled cauliflower, shrimps and oxalis leaves, on a bed of cauliflower couscous. The turbot was fresh and perfectly cooked, the flavours of the cauliflower combined with the cream and turbot was a combination of wonderful tastes. The Asparagus Risotto & Salad was another favourite but that may well be because I love asparagus – there are far too many tastes to describe suffice to say each course was as varied as the other. The succession of outstandingly executed modern ideas and vivid new takes on the classics was a dining experience which was truly divine, innovative and balanced it was fine dining at its absolute best. The wine list was just as impressive with its choice of over 250 fine vintages, as was the extensive cheese selection and the fatally alluring ‘coffee and treats’ This has to be one of the best gastronomic experiences of your life, something that if you are visiting Jersey you certainly shouldn’t miss! www.bohemiajersey.com

spending £60 million for Angel Di Maria and they haven’t exactly set the world alight in the early weeks of the campaign!

he European Championship qualifying fixtures got underway earlier this month and I believe I witnessed a miracle with Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Wales all winning away from home. That must be the first time that has occurred for many a year.

Of course, Chelsea did all their transfer business quite early in the window with Diego Costa arriving on the back of a disappointing World Cup. He has hit the ground running in the Premier League and for me, Chelsea are the team to beat this year.

Of course, it was also a wonderful away win for England too, beating Switzerland 2-0 thanks to a double from Danny Welbeck. The only Home Nation not to come away with a positive result was Scotland, however Gordon Strachan’s men put in a superb performance against the World Champions Germany in their own backyard and deserved more than the 2-1 loss they suffered.

I think Manchester City will run them close, but I can’t see anyone pipping Chelsea to the title and that is down to the fact they have a goalscorer who will net 20 goals or more in the season. Outside of the Premier League, I expect that the Championship, League One and League Two will be tight affairs with everyone believing they have a chance of success.

Even though I am passionate about England, I always want to see the other Home Nations do well and it would be great to see them all qualify for the tournament in two years time. Away from the international fold and moving closer to home, the transfer window is now shut, thank God!

With all of the restricted financial implications coming into place this year, it will be interesting to see how many break the rules and how they are dealt with. I expect a few clubs will be thinking about cutting their cloth accordingly.

Another record amount of obscene money was spent by the World’s elite and none more so than in this country with over £800 million changing hands. Manchester United broke the British record by

Not Just the Big, but Massive, Four-Oh!

I

n my mind I am still in my twenties however with the realisation that an important birthday was looming I spent the month leading up to it swinging wildly from complete denial to absolute panic and with some really down moments! And mixed in with all this is annoyance for allowing myself to get wound up by it, as I wanted to be all blasé and claim that age is just a number!

minded, however there are some things you don’t need to share including, shall we say, the physical side of relationships. If anyone has been unfortunate enough to hear their parents partaking in that activity, surely won’t want to put their children through that? Plus it works both ways as I won’t want to hear my children either! The Husband and I have already discussed this and we will allow their partners to stay over, as it is best under our roof than in some park, however ground rules will be made and of course they are agreed with everyone including the ‘in-laws’!

A lot of the month was spent reflecting and I don’t mean looking at myself in the mirror either, especially not at my age now! I would see programmes advertised on Dave then realise that some of my favourites, and from when I was officially an adult, were over twenty years old when they felt like only five years ago! Now that is a sign of age! Mind you at least there is one remaining actor still alive from Dad’s Army (kids – Google it!).

In the weeks leading up to the big day I spent a lot of time re-playing various parts of my life, including what I could remember from my childhood, (well it was a long time ago now!!) through every decade until now. I marvelled at how a split second decision can sometimes alter your entire future and wondered where I would be now should I had made different decisions. I got morbid at times when I realised, all being well and no awful illnesses, that I could possibly be halfway or more through my life. And then I gave myself an almighty kick up the rear end with the instructions to sort myself out and to enjoy life and I decided that my forties will be the decade of ‘it’s now or never’. I am still young enough to do whatever it is but old enough not to put it off any longer!

Now don’t get me started on music....too late, I’ve started, I don’t need an excuse at my age to say what I want! I still listen to Radio 1 but do panic that one day I will wake up soon and change the dial (another age reference!) to Radio 2. But so far, two weeks into my forties, I have managed to resist. And I have yet to utter the line ‘that’s not music, it’s just a noise’ as our parents did when watching Top of the Pops. Mind you as TOTP ended in 2006 I won’t get to utter it, and it doesn’t seem as long as eight years ago that it ended! Thankfully at least I am too young to remember Pans People (again kids use Google!) and the dodgy looking presenters from the 1970’s!

The decade didn’t get off to the best start though, as I spent my actual 40th birthday celebrating with a vomiting bug. However in the words from my teenage years, from Yazoo – The Only Way is Up (again kids – another Google search!)

Talking of parents disapproval and turning into them – I will not, I repeat WILL NOT go down that road! I aim to be a cool(ish!) parent but create enough distance to not cramp their style, plus there needs to be boundaries and respect so you can’t be their best friend. I am open70

Timeless Elegance I

recently stayed at’East Winds Inn on the northwest coast of the beautiful island of St Lucia. Described as ‘timeless seaside elegance’ it’s easy to see why.

The most spectacular sunsets can be seen from the beachfront bar where a chilled glass of champagne is almost obligatory! The pretty pool hosts a swim up bar where you can help yourself to whatever you fancy and there is even a helpful cocktail menu if you want to try your hand at mixing your own. Complimentary water sports include hobie-cats, pedaloes & Kayaks.

A small All Inclusive boutique Hotel, East Winds has semidetached chic cottages scattered about incredible tropical gardens leading to a Palm shaded beach.

The open air beach front Restaurant offers gourmet dining with fine wine pairings. Beach barbecues, theme nights, steel bands and even piano music accompaniment makes each meal a different experience whilst being relaxed and informal too. Well run for over 20 years by Gareth Leach the General Manager you will meet some of the happiest & friendliest staff who are genuinely pleased to be there. The Resort oozes peace & quiet and low key luxury. Although dwarfed by its neighbour it holds the tranquillity of the gardens and the resulting exotic wildlife within its 12 acres of grounds, a guide book in our room 72

introduced us to the flora and fauna to be found there. Thomas the Cat and Eric the Parrott are long term residents and Humming Birds were regular visitors

The iconic ‘must see’ for any visitor are the twin volcanic Pitons in the South of the Island and for stunning views from the Sea take a Catamaran trip from Rodney Bay. The full day cruise includes commentary about the dramatic coastline as you Sail South to Soufriere for your first glimpse of the Pitons. It is possible to hike them, but we took a trip into the world’s only ‘drive in’ volcano with its bubbling sulphur pools. A visit to a working Chocolate Plantation for lunch includes a demonstration on how the beans are ground by foot! A stop in a small bay for snorkelling a welcome chance to cool down and see some brightly coloured tropical fish.

around our veranda. We were intrigued by the bright orange crabs which bask on the grass and scatter into their burrows as you approach. We watched the local fishermen haul their brightly coloured catch onto the beach as the giant prehistoric looking Frigate Birds circle for titbits, magical. The brown sand beach is reasonably secluded, although all beaches in St Lucia are public, it is also possible to arrange for deep sea fishing or diving trips to the plentiful reefs at an extra cost.

This Hotel is perfect for those looking for unpretentious luxury & relaxation, perfect for couples & honeymooners. There are limited resources for young children although I understand they are welcome.

There is plenty to do outside of the Hotel, just a few minutes taxi ride will take you to Rodney Bay with its Marina and ample restaurants. Equally a taxi to the beautiful Margot Bay, one of the locations for the original Dr Doolittle Film, will reward you with the waterfront setting of ‘Doolittle’s Restaurant’ .There are renowned

We were lucky enough to stay there in August for a few nights, which is out of season, the weather was hot, quite humid and a bit rainy but it didn’t dampen our spirits for this beautiful piece of paradise. We will return and stay for longer next time! For details of when best to go and to find out costs please call: Sue Alexander Eagle Travel Goldington Road, Bedford 01234 348882

A

n unprecedented live experience, exploding with heartpounding music, passionate romance and sensationally sexy dancing.

Seen by millions across the globe this worldwide smash-hit tells the classic story of Baby and Johnny. On holiday in New York’s Catskill Mountains with her older sister and parents, ‘Baby’ shows little interest in the resort activities, and instead discovers her own entertainment when she stumbles upon the staff quarters where an all-night dance party is in full swing. Mesmerised by the raunchy dance moves and the pounding rhythms, ‘Baby’ can’t wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle the resort dance instructor. Two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds, who come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives. Dirty Dancing is a fabulous musical journey with some incredible dance routines. It has no less than 35 songs, including “Hungry Eyes”, “Hey Baby”, “Do You Love Me?” and the classic “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life.” Don't miss your chance to see this truly spectacular musical theatre event - You'll have the time of your life. A quiet night in... Angels Come in Strange Disguises by Mavis Thompson

This book is a delightful and charming collection of anecdotal experiences reflecting on how angels have touched the author and her family’s lives unexpectedly over the years. A mustread for those who love real-life stories and those inspired to connect with a more spiritual realm. Even the more cynical readers will find enjoyment in Thompson’s moving accounts, some lighthearted and amusing, others more dramatic and poignant—but all unforgettable.

Gone Girl

Maleficent In this new take on the classic Sleeping Beauty story, Maleficent, a beautiful winged fairy falls in love with a human who ultimately betrays Maleficent's love and trust of him by cutting off her wings while she is asleep so that he may present them to a dying King in order to be named successor to the throne. Scorned by love, Maleficent seeks revenge by casting an irreversible evil spell on the newly crowned King's first born child, Aurora. In fear that the spell will come true, the new King sends his newborn child away to a secret country cottage hidden deep within the woods to be watched over by a trio of three hummingbird sized fairies, Flittle, Knotgrass and Thistletwit. As Aurora grows in age, the now scorned fairy Maleficent becomes very fond of the adorable little girl and decides to reverse the curse. However the curse is irreversible. Destined to prick her finger on a spindle wheel needle and fall into a deep sleep forevermore Aurora prematurely returns to her father and his castle. Pricking her finger on the spindle wheel, Aurora fall into her deep sleep awaiting her "prince charming".
