Welcome...

I’m loving...

2 3 Autumn is well and truly here; the nights are drawing in and the leaves are changing colour. It gives us an excuse to go shopping to update our wardrobe as well as our home! The foods we eat change, we go from light salads and BBQ’s to comfort food such as casseroles and one pot delights, but for the many of us who embrace this change there are many that don’t. According to The Sleep Council, while the end of long, light nights and hot stuffy bedrooms ends one set of problems, it can mean the start of others for some people, turn to page 24 for advice to make sure Autumn doesn't leave you fatigued and frustrated.

October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness month, and with many brands showing their support by giving a percentage of sales from limited edition products to Breast Cancer Charities, it’s easy to do your bit and help towards this by just purchasing one of them! Page 23 brings you some of our favourites. Our monthly trip to London found us staying at The Ned, an architectural masterpiece that’s set in the former Midland Bank building in London, just steps from Bank Station. A treasure trove of secrets including the underground Vault bar, a must-see for movie buffs, the 25-tonne door, was used as inspiration for the vault in the 1964 James Bond film, Goldfinger! Turn to page 54 to read our full review.

BEAUTY UPDATES

Keep Glazed

When THOO brand owner Andrea Casotti saw the work of Canadian patisserie artist Ksenia Penkina on Instagram, he knew he had to work with her. Ksenia’s stunning icing designs looked so much like the marbled bottles that house his beautiful fragrance creations that it was hard to believe they had been created with sugar! Fragrance and patisserie may be an unusual pairing but Andrea is no stranger to such challenges having previously worked with graffiti artist Kayone on the creation of his urban vetiver fragrance, Each Other. For this new fragrance Andrea wanted something reminiscent of childhood, something sweet, delicious and utterly addictive. Keep Glazed, does all of this with notes of mango, coconut, ginger and lemon, resulting in a mouth watering scent to tempt both nose and palette. Keep Glazed is available at Harrods priced £190 for 75ml EDP.

The Importance of

S

Knowing what is Important

ometimes life lends us a hand in getting things into perspective. We can all get worked up about things that seem terribly important, though probably aren’t. Then other things can happen that can help us put things into a better perspective – sadly often by making us realise we often take for granted the things that are really important. It’s not until those things come under threat that we appreciate how much they are valued. But what an illogical way of living! To be taking for granted the things that have real value though we may not realise that until they are gone or threatened, and putting time, money and energy into things that maybe aren’t so important at all,

Why on earth do we do it? One reason is that many of us have grown up in cultures that are all about, acquiring more. More money, more time, more holiday, more clothes, more things, and in many ways our technological age has fuelled the desire for more! We also live in a society where bigger or more expensive is often seen as better. “People spend too much time looking for more, instead of appreciating what they already have!” Anon

In fact, this is so ingrained in many of us that if we hear of someone who isn’t looking for that next step, the bigger house the new job, the better holiday, or the next relationship, they may be accused of having no drive or ambition. But the only way it is possible to keep looking at ‘more’ is by taking for granted what we already have. Think of a time when something fairly disastrous for you has occurred, maybe illness, or an accident for example, suddenly priorities change and all we want is to be well again or recover, physically or emotionally because one of the things we had taken for granted was suddenly under threat.

But it is a shame if we spend a lot of time and effort, perhaps missing out on things along the way, pursuing things that in the end we don’t think are that important, but it’s something we can all be drawn into unless we are careful. The way to avoid it is to be very clear about your own personal priorities and what, it is that you really value about your life.

Some of these will be different for each of us but there are probably also a lot of similarities.

Most people would say they value health and wellbeing and friends and family. Many of us may say it but then do things that actually don’t support that. For example, not taking care of ourselves or not spending time with those

we say are important to us.

Prioritise So, the first step is to define what is really important for you. One way to think about it, is to think what would really impact your life it is was to disappear. That’s the way to begin appreciating what you already have and not taking it for granted.

Be Grateful When you identify what is really important for you then appreciate and be grateful for it, it is easier to avoid taking it for granted. I remember once being stuck in an airport – it was only one night but it certainly made me appreciate a comfortable bed. Many of us are lucky enough to have our basic needs for shelter, sustenance and safety very well met on a daily basis yet we may never spend a second being grateful for these things.

Be Authentic So, if you decide that health is important to you then it’s hard to justify doing things that harm health. If you decide time with a partner, or your children, is important then committing to lots of other things simply isn’t rational. In fact, it is hypocritical if we are saying one thing then carrying on doing something else. Sometimes being authentic is hard because we get drawn into other things, almost without thinking. It can be simple things that have a knock-on effect like drifting into hours of TV not doing other things which means time for things we decided were important gets squeezed out.

Choose Wisely In some ways the first few steps are easy, decide what is important, be grateful for what you have, even the things we’d often take for granted and then be authentic by ensuring that the daily choices you make reflect the intentions you have. That’s where it gets tough. We make thousands of choices every day, someone asks us to go for a drink after work and we agree almost without thinking, there is nothing wrong with that unless you’ve previously decided to study/go for a run/attend an art class or volunteer at a youth group. If that’s the case then it isn’t wrong, and feeling guilty doesn’t really achieve anything, but by recognising that we actively make choices and by taking time to consider each choice, which can be as simple as thinking for a moment before we make a decision, considering how it fits in with what we have determined is important, we can quite literally change our lives. Midlife Madness Like many others, whatever our view about Brexit, and that is certainly not something I’m going to discuss now, I’m fairly sick of hearing about and it’s become a word that we do not utter - ‘a thing that shall not be named’ like Voldemort in Harry Potter! But I can add another ‘B’ word to that list in our house – blackberries!

When I think back to my childhood, I have many happy memories of blackberrying as a family – usually with a picnic and of course the sun was always shining and the birds singing (nothing rose coloured there) so I have to confess it is something I love to do. But, its more than that, it borders on a compulsion. I love to walk and wherever I walk in the autumn (blackberries have a fairly long season) I seem to come across blackberries and honestly, I try but I find myself picking them. Now I can imagine you are thinking what on earth is the problem with that! Well I walk most days our freezer is relatively small, and the rest of the family have had enough!

Don’t get me wrong they like blackberry crumble, (well one likes crumble, without the blackberries, or indeed any fruit – a bit weird) blackberry cheesecake, blackberry muffins work quite well, so does compote, pie, jelly, jam and I’ve even found a recipe for chutney! But still our freezer is so full of blackberries that I have all but been banned from picking anymore! We’ve also run out of Tupperware containers, so we’ll simply have to order a Chinese takeaway for the ‘pots’, a reasonable price to pay I think!

A word of warning here for anyone in a similar predicament, it’s hard to do it secretively unless the house is empty. I mean picking them is fine but getting them into the house is tough. If it’s a while since you’ve done it you may need reminding that blackberries can be juicy and its hard if you’ve been gathering to get back

into the house with hands that look like you’ve committed a murder without giving the blackberrying game away. Try thinking of an excuse for bags full of blackberries and red/violet hands that would be convincing.

So the obvious answer is for me to accept that enough is enough,, the freezer is full and I just need to stop, but there they are looking gorgeous on the bush – and they are free – they are there for the taking and quite literally if they aren’t picked by me (or someone else) they will just go to rot. Which feels wasteful. As a hunter gatherer surely, this is what I am programmed to do – gather! So, I find it immeasurably hard and even while I am picking, I know I will face a row but somehow, I can’t stop myself. I haven’t yet come across a compulsive blackberry picking self-help group but perhaps one exists somewhere or perhaps I should start one! But I thought I had found a solution. While idly surfing the net looking for blackberry recipes, as you do, particularly recipes where the blackberries are sort of hidden, I came across a recipe for blackberry wine! Now if I could do that, they would never guess what I am up to, but sadly on closer inspection it appears to need a lot of kit, buckets, demi johns and hydrometers so keeping it secret could be tough! When on holiday recently we visited a vineyard and winemaker where you could take your own grapes and they’d create your wine. If there are any blackberry winemakers out there who offer this service, please get in touch. I tell my family that compared to many compulsions it really isn’t too serious. Its legal, not dangerous, okay the odd scratch, it’s a rare thing that saves us money and I get healthy while I’m doing it. The problem is simply the number of blackberries – so I think the only solution is to start a blackberry bank, who knows maybe that could be the post Brexit currency!

Reasons to Take up Yoga

Whether you’re looking to take up a new hobby, want to make positive changes to your health regime, or are simply looking for an excuse to get out of the house, yoga could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

The ancient artform has been practiced since 3000 BC and studies estimate that there are currently around 300 million people practicing yoga worldwide[1]. But what are the benefits? Is it really as good as it seems? To explain why yoga really is all that, Stephen Virtue, Fitness Experience Manager at Total Fitness, the North’s leading midmarket health club, reveals 10 benefits of the practice that you might not know about, to help you decide if yoga is the one for you...

oct2019.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 29/09/2019 19:20 Page 19

1. RELEASE TENSION If you’ve ever found yourself with a sore back or aching shoulders from being hunched over a desk all day, yoga could be the release you need. It offers a huge array of stretches to improve mobility and release tension throughout the body. Shoulder flossing is one example of a technique that most of us in office jobs could benefit from implementing on a daily basis. This simple stretching technique mobilises the entire shoulder joint throughout its entire range of motion. It does this by freeing up space behind the joint - a heavily congested area associated with neck and thoracic spine stiffness if not managed correctly. Regular stretching improves flexibility which in turn reduces the chances of overuse injuries and injury through muscular strain. Maintaining a good level of flexibility will certainly help you stay healthy, not to mention independent, later in life. 2. BOOST IMMUNITY If you’re prone to colds, headaches and sore throats then chances are you’re doing one, if not all, of the following; working long hours, not getting enough sleep, or burning the candle at both ends. Spending a little time each day practicing gentle yoga has been proven to lower stress levels, which in turn gives your body space to breathe and recover, instead of working around the clock. Deep breathing during yoga ensures enough oxygen is being sent to the parts of your body that need it most, whilst many of the poses increase blood flow to the sinuses, helping to ease congestion. 3. INCREASE BRAIN FUNCTION Studies have found that experiencing a meditative state through practicing yoga can thicken the cerebral cortex – the part of the brain that controls awareness, attention, memory, thoughts and language – when practiced over a long period of time[2]. Exercising the brain through meditation in this way is shown to improve brain performance in those key cerebral cortex areas and aids learning new skills. So, in essence, yoga could actually make you smarter!

4. BEAT BLOATING Ever wished there was a quick way to relieve bloating? Yoga poses can be used reduce bloating quickly and efficiently. Activities that improve blood circulation and stretch out the body will help to release the build-up of gas and fluids in the body. Simple yoga poses can prove very effective for this. Try lying on your back and hugging your knees into your chest to achieve a nice stretch and get that circulation moving.

5. IMPROVE BREATHING Once again, those of us in office jobs are found to be at a disadvantage and in this instance may not be breathing correctly. Humans aren’t evolved to be sat down for a significant part of our day and as such those of behind desks are more prone to a collapsed posture, therefore not taking full breaths. Breathing deeply has a huge impact on our bodies and brains, so it’s important to ensure we’re doing it correctly. Practicing yoga stretches out the body, opening the chest area to allow for full, deep breaths and a healthy intake of oxygen. Practicing regularly strengthens the

lungs and improves posture for a better quality of respiration, even when away from the mat. Breathing from the diaphragm - a technique practised within Yoga - has also been shown to unlock localised spinal stiffness.

6. SWEAT OUT IMPURITIES Sweating through exercise is a good way to cleanse the skin of nasties, so why not take it to the next level with hot yoga, like Bikram or Vinyasa, to up the ante? Practicing at a higher temperature demands more energy and encourages the body to sweat more, which has fantastic detoxifying benefits as it removes toxins, grime and bacteria from the pores. It also stimulates blood flow to the skin cells which in turn gives the skin a natural, radiant glow. 7. FIND A STYLE THAT SUITS YOU If hot yoga isn’t your cup of tea then why not try one of many cooler practices of yoga. Alongside Bikram and Vinyasa there is also, Hatha yoga, which covers any style of yoga involving breathing and simple poses - this is a good one for beginners and those wanting to enter a relaxed state of mind. For something more energetic why not try Ashtanga or Power yoga? These are challenging forms of practice that will give your abs and core a good workout, but ultimately leave you feeling meditative. There are plenty of different types of yoga so you’re sure to find a style that suits your individual needs. Call into your local health club or gym to find out what yoga classes are available.

8. PRACTICE MINDFULNESS The 21st century is fast-paced. We could all benefit from slowing down and taking a little time for ourselves here and there. Spending half an hour to an hour practicing yoga a few times a week is a great way to slow down and be mindful of our surroundings. Yoga encourages those practicing to elongate the spine, open out the chest and breathe deeply and slowly to increase oxygen supply to the brain. Sitting and breathing in this way helps us to enter a mindful state, increasing attentiveness and reducing stress.

9. SOCIALISE Yoga classes like the ones offered at Total Fitness are a great way to meet new people or commit to regular face-to-face time with friends. Practicing with a friend or meeting someone at your local class will help you commit to that regular exercise regime as it gives you a reason to not skip your practice - you can hold each other accountable for showing up to class each week. 10. YOGA IS FOR EVERYONE Historically, there has been a stigma surrounding yoga, with many believing it to be a woman’s activity. However, a recent study by Total Fitness concluded revealed that this sentiment is outdated and there is in fact a significant percentage of men who have practiced or would like to practice yoga – 34% to be exact. So, there you have it - grab a mat, get signed up and start your yoga journey. For more information, please visit: www.totalfitness.co.uk

Sleep Well this Autumn As nights draw in and days turn cool, Autumn brings its own set of sleep challenges for those who struggle to snooze. According to The Sleep Council, while the end of long, light nights and hot stuffy bedrooms ends one set of problems, it can mean the start of others for some people.

Says The Sleep Council's sleep chief, Lisa Artis: "While Autumn's cool nights provide a nice bedtime break from Summer's hot and humid evenings, a host of other sleep issues can crop up at this time of year and disrupt shuteye." Here's The Sleep Council's advice to make sure Autumn doesn't leave you fatigued and frustrated: • Shorter days can mean less exposure to sunlight. This means lower levels of vitamin D and increased feelings of fatigue - and also disruption of the circadian rhythm, which regulates feelings of wakefulness and sleepiness. Getting plenty of sun on your face in the morning can help, so be sure to open the curtains as soon as you wake up and, if possible, go for a morning walk. After sunset, do the opposite and dim indoor lights to get your body back on track.

• While crisp, chill air can make it tempting to light the fire and crank up the heating, it's actually best to keep the home - or at least the bedroom between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. Letting the bedroom get too warm can mess with sleep: too hot and the body struggles to bring its temperature back down, causing wakefulness. Too cold and the body will eventually wake you up -

demanding extra layers of warmth and insulation!

• Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that can set in when daylight hours grow shorter, is thought to affect one in 15 people between the months of September and April in the UK each year. While the cause of SAD is still unknown, the disorder can alter melatonin levels, which play a role in the sleep/wake cycle and cause daytime sleepiness and oversleeping. To reestablish a normal sleep schedule, exercise regularly, ensure the bedroom is conducive to sleep (strictly no gadgets and gizmos) and keep bedtime/waking times consistent - even at weekends. Getting as much natural daylight as possible is key too, as it suppresses melatonin levels and boosts serotonin production. • Colder weather can also tempt us to eat more than we should. While it's easy to stick to salads and lighter foods during warm Summer months, avoid the temptation to ‘comfort eat' heavier meals as the temperatures drop - particularly close to bedtime. Overload the tum at your peril! Too much food, too close to bedtime is a sure-fire recipe for wake-up level heartburn and indigestion.

• Make sure your bed is comfortable and still supportive. Indoor furniture can be forgotten about during the lazy, hazy, outdoor furniture days of summer. With the focus firmly back on interiors, it might be time to re-appraise the piece you use more than any other in the home - and if your bed is seven years old or more, then a new one could definitely be on the cards.

Upstairs, Downstairs at

The Ned

trip to the bank these days is a visit to an impersonal modern large space, dominated predominately by machines doing the job of people, a completely different experience to banking from years gone by.

A

Many of the old bank buildings have been neglected, converted into modern apartments, coffee shops or worse completely knocked down, which is why it’s so exciting and a breath of fresh air to pay a visit to The Ned, an architectural masterpiece that’s set in the former Midland Bank building in London, just steps from Bank Station. Named after the original building's architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens. When Lutyens got married, he started signing his name NEd, with a capital E as well as a capital N, because his wife, a dotty aristocrat whom he doted on, was called Emily. Walk through the doors and you’re transported back to 1920’s glamour, original features have been carefully preserved and reinvented polished walnut walls, African malachite Art Deco pillars, crystal chandeliers and old banking counters in place as room dividers. Wherever you turn it’s that great care has been taken when remoulding this bank into an opulent, luxurious 5star hotel.

The massive open-plan main hall is a foodie’s dream, eight restaurants are housed here, all separated by screens, cleverly placed bars and private booths. Whether it’s coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner or just drinks you’re spoilt for choice – the atmosphere is electric and complemented even more by the live music that dominates an elevated central bandstand. The feel of a bygone era continues as you effortlessly check in, (I half expected to turn around and find Hercule Poirot with his

vintage leather suitcase behind me) and then it’s time to explore this architectural masterpiece. The 1920’s vibe continues with opulent art deco furniture that compliments the deep rich colours effortlessly, think red velvet chairs, gold chaise, fringed lamps, crisp white sheets set against the backdrop of a dark wooden bed, along with special touches of crystal cut champagne flutes, silver caddies for tea, coffee, sugar and a large Aztec rug covering the wooden floor.

The bathroom is just as impressive, with black and white tiles creating a chequered effect on the floor, there’s an abundance of Cowshed toiletries all full size, so you can decide whether your mood requires an ‘uplifting’ ‘invigorating’ or ‘bracing’ shower gel!

The temptation to explore the rest of the hotel, slightly outweighed staying in our room, especially as we were exploring parts of the hotel that are only available to Ned’s Club members and privileged guests! First the upstairs rooftop, an abundance of space with its own restaurant, bar, outdoor terrace and heated pool, with awesome views over the London skyline. You can’t come up here and not lie back on one of the poolside loungers, glass of champagne in hand breathe in the atmosphere and marvel at the skyscape in front of you.

Next, it’s downstairs, and the underground Vault bar, a must-see for movie buffs, the 25-tonne door, made by Chatwood Safe Company (one of only two ever made) was used as inspiration for the vault in the 1964 James Bond film, Goldfinger! It leads into the original Midland Bank strongroom, now an exclusive all-

oct2019.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/09/2019 19:12 Page 53

hours cocktail lounge, with plenty of reminders of its original purpose including more than 3,000 original safety deposit boxes (some still in use), the perfect place for a pre-dinner drink, nightcap or if like us who wanted to just sit in awe at the ambience and history behind the vault – both! Back upstairs, you’re certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to eating and drinking. Eight restaurants sit amongst The Ned’s historic banking hall. Each with its own distinct space, separated by the stunning verdite columns and rows of walnut banking counters (think Harrods food hall, but on a much grander scale).

We decided to dine at Kaia, a modern Asian-Pacific-inspired restaurant, the atmosphere in and around the whole banking hall is buzzing, an open kitchen allows you to watch the chefs at work, (slightly reminiscent of a recent trip to Japan). Kaia specialises in healthy food that include dishes such as sushi, sashimi, and poke bowls, and we couldn’t wait to see if it tasted as good as it looks! There’s not really a starter, main and dessert here it’s all about sharing plates, coming out as and when they are ready – the menu is an array of mouth-watering treats - we opted for a selection of sushi, purple yam fries (these were addictively tasty, one taste and you can’t stop), Japanese fried chicken which was delicious and perfectly fried, tantalising crispy prawns and succulent lamb cutlets. If you only have one thing off the menu here though, it has to be a poke bowl, not only is it an instagrammable dream, it’s a flavour bomb full of rainbow colours and tantalising textures – the perfect dish to accompany this fabulous taste experience. Next morning after an indulgent breakfast at Italian restaurant Cecconi’s, another faultless restaurant within The Ned (you even get asked what milk you would like your coffee made with), it was time for a little me time in another Ned’s Club hideaway – The Spa. Built around a 20-metre indoor pool, complete with a sauna, steamroom and traditional Moroccan hammam, it’s the perfect place to completely unwind and do nothing or if you’re feeling a little more energetic why not pop into Ned’s Club Gym. The Ned is a treasure trove of hidden rooms, experiences, history and architecture, around every corner there’s something new to discover, an elegant retreat for business or pleasure and guaranteed to have you returning time and time again. The Legacy of Empress Elisabeth of Austria

Revived at Beau-Rivage Geneva

eau-Rivage, Geneva’s original family-run grande dame, has revived the legacy of one of its most famous guests; Empress Elisabeth of Austria, informally known as Sissi, with a new experience inviting visitors to take a stroll back in time, staying in her favourite suite and re-tracing her footsteps through Geneva. Commemorating the life one of Europe’s most glamorous and intriguing princesses and highlighting Beau-Rivage’s links to her story, the new package gives first-hand access to Empress Sissi’s regal hideaway in Geneva, telling her colourful tale right up to her untimely assassination, an impactful moment in European history to which the hotel’s then-owner Fanny Mayer was witness.

- A two-hour guided tour through Geneva following Sissi’s footsteps and visiting the Sissi statue, a memorial sign by the bridge and visit through the Old Town - Airport transfer to and from Geneva airport in Mercedes S Class - Commemorative book detailing the history of BeauRivage Geneva - Buffet breakfast

- One night’s accommodation in Sissi Terrace Suite, the Empress’s favourite suite, which features a painting of Empress Sissi as well as the most historical object in the hotel; an original untouched mirror dating from the establishment of the hotel, 1865. Just outside of the Suite is a display of unique artefacts, including: a rose, given by the Empress to Fanny Mayer (grandmother of Jacques Mayer, owner of Beau-Rivage Geneva, 4th generation), a piece of purple ribbon stained with blood and belonging to Sissi, cutlery engraved with her initials as well as a pair of gloves, also embroidered with her initials. The display also showcases the last picture of the Empress, taken in Geneva.

The story of Empress Sissi at Beau Rivage

B

The new Sissi Package includes:

The opulent Sissi Terrace Suite offers unrivalled views over Lake Geneva and its iconic jet d’eau fountain from its grand private terrace and boasts a sumptuous bathroom designed like a private spa, adorned with marble and superbly-appointed with amenities that include a steam room and Jacuzzi.

The life of Élisabeth of Austria sounds like a romantic novel: a vivacious Bavarian princess with floor-length hair and known as a beauty queen of her time, she became Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary by marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1854. She lived a turbulent life, from the death of her son in a murder-suicide at his hunting lodge in Mayerling to her assassination in Geneva in 1898, to which Fanny Mayer, then owner of Beau-Rivage, was witness. Empress Sissi regularly visited Switzerland during her

later years and was a frequent visitor to Beau-Rivage where she stayed in her favourite suite, now named the Sissi Terrace Suite, under a number of pseudonyms, enjoying the hotel’s utmost privacy between exploring nearby Medieval towns such as Montreux and walking in the mountains.

On 10th September 1898, the Empress left the hotel to stroll along the quay to catch a boat over Lake Geneva before being struck by Italian anarchist Luigi Luccheni with a sharpened nail file, her injury undiscovered until her collapse on board the boat. Empress Sissi was carried by the concierge back to Beau-Rivage where she passed away 20 minutes later, attended to by the hotel’s owner and her husband, who were presented with a rose taken from the coffin as well as a small piece of ribbon from her dress, which remain at the hotel today in commemoration of the Empress. Fry’s Footie Corner I

have had the opportunity during September to take a little break from football for a personal trip but make no mistake, I was missing the beautiful game. If I am completely honest, I never missed a beat. I was watching the Peterborough games through a stream that the football club are able to provide, a service called iFollow.

As much as I enjoyed sitting in the sunshine watching the club score plenty of goals and record some notable successes, I couldn’t wait to return to my seat in the Director’s Box for the clash with AFC Wimbledon. It wasn’t good for the heartrate that game as we made life very uncomfortable before prevailing in a 3-2 success.

There have been quite a few of those moments in the early part of the season. There have also been moments like the one we enjoyed against Rochdale when we chalked up a 6-0 win. Manchester City in the Premier League may not be with a 100% record like Liverpool (at the time of writing) but they have demonstrated they are not a team to be messed with. They smashed Watford 8-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium and that just goes to show that sometimes the gulf in class between sides is unsurmountable. When a big club plays to their capability against a perceived smaller club, even in the Premier League which is awash with money, score-lines like that one can happen if that smaller club drops their standards.

And that is why it is always the most consistent team that comes out on top and why City were successful in the Premier League last term. They will take some beating again. The promoted teams have all had their moment in the sun so far with Norwich taking points off City, Aston Villa showing they can cause problems and Sheffield United picking up some very notable points. In fact, it is Sheffield United that I think have a great chance of survival and it is down to their manager Chris Wilder. I like him. He is a bit old school. He has deserved his opportunity at the top table after managing in the lower leagues with clubs including Northampton Town. He is not afraid of the big boys. He is not afraid to be disappointed when they come up short. He is a breath of fresh air.

More managers like Chris deserve their opportunity. I was pleased to see the Cowley brothers get a shot in the Championship with Huddersfield Town after many years of success at Lincoln City. I hope that continues to happen. There are a lot of good young English managers that just need that opportunity to shine.

The Fever is Back

may be more than 40 years since the cinema release of the John Travolta classic but that hasn’t stopped Bill Kenwright from producing this re-imagined and revitalised stage version of Saturday Night Fever that delivers more drama, more music, new choreography and a hot new working class hero!

Richard Winsor stars as Tony Manero whose job, as a paint store clerk in his own tough Brooklyn, N.Y neighbourhood, is suffocating him. Tony lives for the weekends so, come Saturday, he and his mates head off to the local disco to dance the night away. When a big dance competition is announced, Tony persuades the beautiful and talented Stephanie to be his partner. But as they train for the big night, they also start to fall for each other….. We caught up with Richard to talk all things Bee Gees, John Travolta and Casualty!

Why did you want to be part of Saturday Night Fever? John Travolta’s performance in the film Saturday Night Fever was what got me dancing as a kid. The disco scenes, his solo, his very masculine energy, it inspired me.

I remembered all the incredible moments from the film and all its themes, and thought “If we get that clear and honest for a new stage version, it could be really amazing.” And we are taking it back to that dark atmospheric setting. We’re not shying away from that. It is still going to be a stage dance show, but we really are finding the realism in it.

There have been stage versions before. Is this an entirely new production? It’s brand new. Everything is new, apart from the story and the music of course.

What is Saturday Night Fever about? It follows Tony Manero. He is a young, enigmatic guy who hasn’t had much opportunity in his life. He’s from a hard-working, down on their luck, Brooklyn family, and works in a paint store for minimal wages. But when he goes to the 2001: Odyssey nightclub, he is the king on the dance floor. He’s a different person there. He loves the attention, the sweat, the heat, the women. When the club announces a dance competition with a prize of $1000 and the chance to dance in the discos of Manhattan, it’s a big deal for him. It offers him that chance to escape.

The Bee Gees music is one of the most iconic soundtracks in cinema history. How are you using it in this production? We wanted to keep the music close to the brilliant original soundtrack. The music supporting the drama and the tragedies as they unfold. We have an electric band guiding us along and the Bee Gees singing the hits, which all adds to the story. Hearing the music played live is amazing.

How do you feel about following in the footsteps of John Travolta? It’s a challenge. I want to draw from him, not imitate him. I’ve got so much to play off – the ways of standing, walking and dancing. But I have to play my own reality, otherwise it becomes contrived imitation. This production marks the 40th anniversary of the film’s release. Is it still relevant? That’s the thing. With Trump threatening to build a wall to keep the Mexicans out and people with split families striving for a better life, it’s interesting to look at it and think “How far have we come?” 40 years on, and similar families are talking about not being employed and trying to break free. It’s all still there. How is seeing Saturday Night Fever on stage different to watching the film? The sheer immediacy, energy and atmosphere you get from the stage adds to the experience. That coupled with beautifully sung live music and amazing choreography is fantastic. You get moved in a different way in the theatre. As an audience you witness something so present and real it hits you differently.

Are you excited about touring? I am. I’ve always loved touring. I toured a lot as part of Matthew Bourne’s company. This is going to be a physically and mentally demanding show, but I’m ready to take it to all these different cities.

Are there tour dates you’re particularly looking forward to? I’m excited about going to Cardiff, because that’s where I filmed Casualty. I haven’t seen some of my mates there for so long. They’re getting a big group together to see the show. And Liverpool, because Liverpool Empire is a ginormous, beautiful theatre. How was starring in Casualty? I absolutely loved Casualty. I learned so much there and worked with many great guest artists. I got a lovely big ending as too. When I suggested I was ready to try a new challenge elsewhere, they said my character deserved to be killed. I didn’t know how to take that, but it is a huge compliment. They can only do it once every two or three years.

You began as a dancer and worked for a decade with Matthew Bourne. What was that like? I joined him as my first job out of college. It was a wonderful time. I was 19 when he asked me to join the company. A year later he started creating lead roles on me. I did Play Without Words, Edward Scissorhands, Dorian Grey, which all led to the second generation of Swan Lake. I’m still really close with Matthew. He’s a massive support. When I told him about Saturday Night Fever, he was delighted and said, “Fantastic. About time you got back on stage Dickie.”

Saturday Night Fever is appearing at Milton Keynes Theatre from Tuesday 15th – Saturday 19th October 2019. Tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com
