Foods That Aren’t as Healthy as You Think
What if you found out that your favourite healthy snack wasn’t actually healthy? Many of these 'guilt-free' alternatives are essentially junk foods in disguise — loaded with sugar, artificial colours, sodium, trans fats and other additives that diminish their nutritional value.
We spoke to Nutritionist, Donia Hilal from Personalised.co, who outlines the top 6 foods that aren’t as healthy as you think.
Granola
Packed with oats, nuts, seeds high in omega-3s and healthy sweet treats such as dark chocolate, granola is commonly thought of as a nutritious breakfast. However, the reality is that a lot of granola brands are packed with excess sugar and very little fibre, which can harm your health. Just one portion size of granola can easily top 600 calories, which is a third of the average woman’s daily allowance. Instead, try making your granola at home by baking hearty, whole grain oats, pecans, coconut or olive oil, cinnamon and a little natural sweetener such as honey, together for 20 minutes. When you make your own granola at home, you are easily able to control the amount of sugar and fat that goes into it.
Flavoured Yoghurt
Unsweetened or Greek yoghurts are great for your diet, as they are low in sugar and high in protein. But what about flavoured yoghurt? Unfortunately, flavoured yoghurt options can contain more sugar than a piece of cake. Yoghurt is not supposed to be sweet. When its natural, it should have a tasty sour tang, as it is the result of bacterial fermentation of milk. Over the years, to appeal to a mass audience, more sweeteners and additives have been added to cover up the tart taste. Nowadays, flavoured yoghurts can be considered a dairy dessert instead of a healthy, breakfast option. It’s important to check the label to see how much sugar has been added and what sweeteners were used.
Sports Drinks
Sports drinks were designed with athletes in mind. They contain carbohydrates, which are a quick source of energy when your body is feeling drained and electrolytes (salts)
to replace those that have been lost through sweating. Whilst they are marketed as sport drinks, athletes aren’t the only ones drinking them and most people don’t need the additional salt, sugars or carbohydrates. If you are not physically active enough, the extra sodium can increase the risk of high blood pressure and contribute to weight gain. To replenish your body after exercise, we recommend drinking water and using a customised protein powder.
Vegetable Crisps
Crisps made from vegetables, healthy right? Wrong! Veggie chips aren’t much healthier than potato chips as they have a high sodium and saturated fat content. For example, a bag of Tyrrell’s beetroot, parsnip & carrot crisps with a pinch of sea salt contain 35.7g of fat per 100g, which is 14.28g in a 40g bag. A Krispy Kreme Original Glazed doughnut contains 8.3g of fat, which is almost 6g less. In the same way you treat regular potato crisps, eat vegetable crisps in moderation. Alternatively, you can bake your favourite vegetables at home in crisp shapes to enjoy without guilt.
Dried fruit
As a popular snack, dried fruit is great for boosting your intake of fibre, antioxidants and other nutrients. It is easy to eat large amounts at a time, but excessive intake means you will be consuming large amounts of calories and sugar which can contribute to obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Some dried fruit is even coated with sugar or syrup before it is dried to make it more appealing. Therefore, it is so important to read the ingredients and nutritional information found on the package and stick to the recommended portion size of 30g
Couscous
Couscous isn’t bad for you, but it’s probably not as good for you as you think. Although couscous looks like a grain, its technically a tiny pasta made from either barley or wheat. If you routinely opt for couscous over true grains, you’re missing out on antioxidants, calcium, potassium, vitamin B6 and other vital minerals needed for your diet. Switch to a healthier whole grain such as quinoa or opt for whole-wheat couscous instead.

Tips for Reducing the Symptoms of the Menopause 5
October marks Menopause Awareness Month, which means we’ve talked to the experts at So Body Co, who have shared their top tips to help women reduce the symptoms of the menopause and help you feel happier and healthier.
Whether you’re perimenopausal or experiencing symptoms of the menopause and perimenopause, it is one of the biggest things your body and mind will go through, and therefore it can understandably take quite a toll. While all women will experience menopause and perimenopause differently, there are a number of common symptoms to look out for - from changes in your skin and difficulty sleeping to aches and pains in your joints.
Identifying and understanding your own symptoms is the first step, and the good news is that there are simple lifestyle changes which you can make to help reduce these symptoms and the impact the menopause or perimenopause is having on your mind and body.
1. Eat food rich in calcium and vitamin D
Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet with plenty of calcium and vitamin D can help to moderate several perimenopause and menopause symptoms. Not only can vitamin D help to keep your mind sharp and more focused, but it can also help calcium absorption –which is crucial for strengthening bones and joints, both of which can be impacted as a result of the menopause.
To keep both your bones and joints feeling healthy incorporate calcium-rich foods into your diet, including milk, yoghurt and kale, as well as reducing the amount of refined sugar and processed food you’re consuming to ensure you’re eating a good, nutritious diet.
2. Exercise regularly
One of the symptoms of the menopause linked to hormonal changes is weight gain, and particularly around the abdomen. However, there are also other factors at play which can impact weight gain, such as the general ageing process and how active your lifestyle is.
Exercise is something which can help to limit weight gain for those who experience this symptom of the menopause. Mix high-intensity exercises which are intended to burn fat with gentle exercises, such as
walking or yoga, to ensure you’re moving your body while also giving it time to recover. Exercise also helps to keep your joints moving and can help to reduce the muscle aches and joint pain which are another symptom of the menopause.
3. Take collagen supplements
Symptoms of the menopause can cause joint stiffness, aches and pains, hair loss and thinning, as well as a change in skin conditions, such as dryness, increased oiliness, or the onset of adult acne. Collagen is an essential protein in the body which contributes to keeping our skin, muscles and joints healthy, however the amount of collagen our body produces reduces over time. The body begins to lose collagen from your 30s, but about 30% of skin collagen is specifically lost in the five years following the onset of the menopause, and this continues at a rate of 2% per year.
Collagen powder is the best kept secret for combatting this decline, and multi-collagen powder has remarkable benefits for those experiencing menopause and perimenopause. Not only can it help to maintain healthy hair, skin, nails, organs and muscles but it has wider health benefits, too.
4. Get plenty of rest
One of the most important things is to listen to your body and know when it’s time to rest. The menopause is a huge thing for your body to go through, therefore managing your sleep routine and ensuring you’re getting plenty of rest is crucial.
The menopause can impact your sleep which can leave you feeling tired and irritable, so try drinking a cup of camomile tea or reading a book before bed to help your body and mind wind down.
So, there you have it, top tips to help reduce the symptoms of the menopause to ensure you feel the happiest and healthiest you can be.
5. Share how you feel
Menopause and peri-menopause are life stages which every woman will go through, so know that you are not alone in experiencing it. Talking to friends or family members who have gone through it or who are going through it at the same time will help you to cope and feel less alone. A problem shared is a problem halved.
As I was growing up I remember that witches were generally something I feared, witches appearing in lots of children’s stories and while there was the very occasional ‘good’ witch, as a group they tended to be portrayed as old and ugly, pimpled and hairy and of course malevolent in the extreme. In historical terms I can appreciate that many were misunderstood and certainly persecuted but that wasn’t uppermost in my mind as a child!
Somewhere along the line there seems to have been a re branding. Try a quick scroll through Facebook and you will see no end of quotes about witches – always accompanied by photographs of young and attractive women – where the aim is all about taking back control, a sort of empowerment. They may still talk of spells but many of those are linked to things like intentions and perhaps a growing understanding that the energy that flows through and around us all does indeed contain a kind of magic. Perhaps there has also been a growing understanding that the herbs and potions used by our witches of yore were often quite sound as we collectively look back at how nature can heal. So, the evil witch has morphed into a pretty, competent, kind, empowered, wise woman. A great marketing job I’d say!
And it’s not just witches. I bet a lot of you will remember jumble sales. I used to love them as a child heading to the local church hall with a few pennies, literally – pounds never came into it, in my sweaty palm and a keen sense of anticipation in my heart to seek for the treasure. What this was I didn’t know but I was always certain I’d find it and usually did. They weren’t for the faint hearted though. Entering a jumble sale was a bit like being in a rugby scrum – literally there were disorderly queues outside and to have any chance of a finding said treasure determination and a modicum of strength was needed to get through the crowds plus a loud voice, to get the ‘sellers’ attention so you could part with a few pennies and take possession of whatever you treasure that day was!
As an adult I still enjoy jumble sales, in fact I can confess to getting many of the toys for my children from them, but I can also confess to learning that the way to access the quality ‘jumble’ was to volunteer to help. That meant first dibs on anything you saw that looked good – well worth giving up an afternoon.
But we no longer have jumble sales. We do still have car boot sales but what we seem to have now are things like preloved markets – if you haven’t come across one yet don’t worry, you will. Now these are a bit different from a jumble sale. Gone are the piled heaps of clothes on trestle tables, there are now clothes rails and clothes that are actually labelled. The one I went to also had people selling coffee – not the instant church hall variety but trendy complicated coffees and sandwiches made with sourdough!
There are also things like vintage sales – which I think really is just a different way of saying old or second hand but give your listing on eBay the title of vintage and it will get a lot more hits. I’m not exactly clear what defines vintage but much of the clutter that I might have previously sent to a jumble sale I can now send, even by post to companies that buy and presumably re sell it. Now they wouldn’t do that with jumble so it really all is about the branding!
Then there are the charity shops, a very common feature of many small towns in fact some seem to have few shops other than charity shops and I don’t think many people would have a problem with them in fact my father-in-law refuses to shop anywhere else – but if you call them a thrift shop instead then they become even more attractive. After all being thrifty is all about sustainability and respecting the environment by recycling. I’m just left wondering how I can apply a bit of rebranding to myself?

The Journey to Joy
I have come across a lot of people both face to face and on social media who want to find joy. I mean who wouldn’t? Even if we accept that joy may not be a permanent state, finding moments of joy is something I think we’d all wish for I’m sure. As individuals of course, what makes us joyful will vary tremendously but the feeling of joy is something none of us would deny is wonderful.
How do we jump from where we are to joy? For some of us it might feel like a few small steps for others it may feel so far away it is unattainable. But as with a lot of things if we approach it a step at a time we can probably all ‘get there’.
Acceptance
The first step along the way to finding joy is acceptance. We will never be able to find joy – or at least it will be a lot harder if we can’t actually accept where we are at the moment. Some situations are tough, they may not be of our choosing and not what we want. But unless it is a situation we can change then all we can really do is accept it for the moment. Accepting something in the present doesn’t mean we won’t work to change it.
What it does mean is that when we can accept where we are, all the energy which we use on dealing with the emotion around the situation, the anger, the resentment, perhaps the frustration or sadness can be used to focus on next steps or begin to adjust what your plans may be for the future.
Peace
This is the next step along the pathway to joy. Once we can accept the situation as it is we can begin to find peace in and with it.
As with lots of other issues in life a lot of this is about our thoughts. As mentioned in the quote it’s about re training our thoughts about reaching a state of acceptance so that we can feel peaceful. Notice the things that help you feel peaceful and calm. For many of us it might involve being creative, being outdoors and in nature, spending time with friends, reading, listening to music or a whole host of other things - doing things we love will often create a sense of
peace. So too will slowing down and and being in the moment.
Gratitude
This is truly a game changer. When we have reached acceptance of our situation AND begun to find peace within it we can begin to shift our focus to gratitude. In almost every situation there are some things to be grateful for.
We know that gratitude literally does us good – studies have shown that it can improve our sleep, mood and immunity and decrease depression, anxiety and chronic health conditions, So, there is no reason not to be grateful. If it feels tough at first try to be disciplined with it. Every morning find 3 things that you can be grateful for – when you start doing it regularly you will notice more and more 5things you can be grateful for. Also build into your life times to slow down, be in the present moment and notice things. Clearing our mind of some of the cares of the day enables us to take notice of the moment – notice the flower or the smile from a stranger.
Joy
When we have learned to accept our situation, when we can find peace within it and be grateful for the good things that exist in almost every situation we are only a short hop away from experiencing joy. In fact, when we learn to be at peace with ourselves and can find things to be grateful for, very often we will find joy in the moment. And like other things the more we practice that the easier finding joy in moments can become.
It is a process we can be active in, we can choose what we focus on. We can choose to concentrate on the things that bring us down on the difficult situation we are in OR moments of joy however small they may be. We need to remind ourselves that while we can’t control what happens to us we can control how we respond to what happens and choosing to move through these stages to find joy in any circumstances is a choice we can make and keep making.

Pea and Broad Bean Risotto Soup
“Rice dishes are full of nutrients, easy to cook and versatile. In fact, rice is one of the few foods that can be enjoyed sweet or savoury, hot or cold and for every meal of the day”
Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
½ large leek (approx. 90g), finely sliced
½ small white onion
2 garlic cloves, finely diced
100g arborio rice
1 litre of vegetable stock
250g frozen peas
150g broad beans
1 large handful of fresh parsley (25g)
Method
Heat the olive oil in a large pan on a medium heat and sauté your leek and onion until soft, then add the garlic for a further 1-2 minutes. Add your risotto rice (arborio) and gently toast for a few minutes. Pour in 2/3 of your stock, cover with a lid and leave to simmer for 15 minutes. Keep an eye on the ratio of stock to solids (should be even), add more broth if needed, then add both the broad beans and peas, following by a handful of chopped parsley. Cover with a lid and simmer for a further 5-7 minutes.
Once your soup is ready, dish up, top with the parsley and croutons if using, and season to taste. Enjoy!
TIP: Whilst this recipe is plant based, don’t be afraid to experiment with vegetables/stock, or even add some shredded cooked chicken for the final ten minutes for a protein boost!

Lamb Stew with Pumpkin and Dried Mandarin Peel
Ingredients
1.25kg lamb leg, off the bone
500g pumpkin
3 tbsp vegetable oil
2 medium onions
3 thick slices ginger
3 garlic cloves, minced
40g dried mandarin peel, roughly chopped
90ml shaohsing wine
900ml water
4 tsp Wing Yip Dark Soy Sauce
1 tsp sugar
2 spring onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp fresh coriander, roughly chopped
Method
Cut the lamb into large 1 inch chunks. Peel the skin off of the pumpkin and then cut into large pieces approximately 2 inches in size. In a saucepan heat the oil over a medium heat and when the oil is hot add the lamb to seal. Fry the lamb for 3-4 minutes ensuring that it is evenly browned all over. You might need to cook the lamb in batches to ensure that the pan is not over-crowded.
When all of the lamb is sealed, remove from the pan and keep to the side. Add the onion, ginger, garlic and mandarin peel to the pan. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the onions have started to soften. Add in the shaohsing wine and de-glaze the pan by turning the heat up to high and scraping any bits of lamb or onion off of the pan. Next add the water, dark soy sauce and sugar to the saucepan. Bring to the boil and then add the lamb, and any juices, into the pan. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid and then gently simmer for 1 hour. Stir the stew every so often to prevent anything from sticking to the pan.
After 1 hour, add the pumpkin to the pan and top up with water if necessary, to ensure that the pumpkin is fully covered. Cover the pan again and simmer for another 30 minutes or until the pumpkin is cooked. Once the pumpkin is cooked, the stew is ready to serve.
Garnish with spring onion and coriander and it could be served with rice or noodles.

“Time to add that special touch to your October suppers with this Asian-inspired homecooked meal”
Amalfi Lemon & Polenta Cake
Ingredients
1 Amalfi lemon
250 ml extra virgin olive oil , plus extra for greasing
4 large free-range eggs
250 g caster sugar
250 g ground almonds
100 g fine polenta
Syrup
150 g runny honey
1 Amalfi lemon
Mascarpone Cream
200 g mascarpone
2 teaspoons icing sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla paste
50 g natural yoghurt
Method
Place the whole lemon into a large deep saucepan, cover with cold water and a small heatproof plate (to keep the lemon submerged). Place the pan on a medium heat, bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes, or until the lemon is soft. (You might need to top up with more water, if the water evaporates too much.)
Drain the lemon and set aside to cool completely, then cut it into quarters removing any pips. Place the lemon quarters into a blender or food processor, then blitz with the extra virgin olive oil until smooth.
Preheat the oven to 160°C/325°F/gas 3. Grease and line a deep 20cm cake tin (or 12 x 10cm cake tins). Whisk the eggs and sugar together in a large bowl, then whisk in the lemon and oil purée, the ground almonds and polenta. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin(s), spread out evenly with a palette knife and bake for 40 to 45 minutes (20 minutes if you’re making individual cakes), or until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin, then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.
Meanwhile, make the lemon syrup: place the honey in a small pan on a medium-low heat and squeeze in the lemon juice. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring, for 4 to 5 minutes, until the honey has melted. (You may need to add a splash of hot water if it looks too thick.) Remove from the heat and set aside to cool.
To make the mascarpone cream, beat the mascarpone, icing sugar and vanilla paste together, then gently fold in the yoghurt and set aside.
To assemble the cake, place the sponge in the middle of the plate. Spoon the mascarpone cream on top making peaks and waves, then drizzle over the syrup and garnish with toasted almonds and a few lemon balm leaves.

Its landscapes are breathtaking, with dense forests, rocky hills and magnificent lakes which are frozen in winter and sun soaked in summer.
Easily reached by a short flight from Helsinki to the regional airport of Kajaani, in winter, Arctic Lakeland's guaranteed snow blanketed landscape offers an idyllic playground for a selection of activities from husky sledding and snowshoeing to cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The Sky Cabin Glass Suites at the summit of the Ukkohalla ski resort hill are well equipped with a motorised bed, small kitchen and dining facilities, and the glass walls ensure guests can keep a look out for a Northern Lights display from the comfort of their own bed. A choice of restaurants and the Sauna World & Spa are all within

NEW hotel is located in the heart of Athens within walking distance from the city’s main attractions. This 79-room and suites establishment is one of the city’s finest examples of modern architecture.
The interiors are simply outstanding, the unusual custom-made furniture and handmade fixtures make guests feel and breathe in a major art installation. An entirely NEW approach with energetic hospitality and seductive customer-centred services, NEW hotel is the first ever hotel project of award-winning designer duo, Fernando and Humberto Campana, who were commissioned for their eco-friendly ethos, their love for contemporary materials and their sensitivity to local culture. This ethos is apparent in every aspect of NEW Hotel’s design, allowing it to blend in seamlessly with the neighborhood in which it stands, honoring its surroundings like no other city hotel in Athens.
Located on Filellinon Street, next to Constitution Square (Syntagma Square), the hotel is perfectly positioned as a base for exploring sights of Athens, including the ruins of Plaka, the Acropolis hill and its museum, the stylish boutique shopping district of Kolonaki and the bustling business zone.
Situated in the former Olympic Palace Hotel, NEW Hotel encompasses the heritage of its past by using recycled parts of the old hotel and reinterpreted local materials to create a complete work of art, making NEW Hotel the one and only contemporary boutique hotel in the city of Athens. The old elements of the past are cleverly contrasted by a blend of new modern art, sculpture and design on the inside.
NEW Hotel celebrates its incredible location through its designers. The Campanas worked together with local architecture students from the University of Thessaly to combine design and culture, which collide on every floor. Each of the 79 bedrooms emulate one of three concepts stemming from Greek culture, with postcards, local Athenian sculptures and shadow puppets, and custom-made furniture and fixtures are found throughout, making guests feel as though they are living in a major art installation.
Dining
The Campana’s influence extends to NEW Taste the restaurant. Located on the ground floor, it is based on the iconic Favela Chair, with columns covered in long narrow strips of wood, reminiscent of the favelas in Brazil, and pieces of furniture from the old Olympic hotel.
The all-day restaurant serves a menu based on simple dishes from the Mediterranean, cooked using the finest and freshest produce, a popular place for guests and Athenians alike. On the 7th floor of the hotel, the Art Lounge, serves exceptional food and cocktails, topped off with panoramic views of Athens.

Great Plains' Sitatunga Private Island Opens in Botswana
Great Plains, the iconic eco-tourism company, is delighted to announce the opening of Sitatunga Private Island, a water-based Réserve-Collection Safari Camp in the upper reaches of Botswana’s Okavango Delta.
Built on a raised, wrap-around railway sleeper private deck, Sitatunga Private Island can accommodate a maximum of four adults in two separate and stunning private suites. The spacious double-bedroom Sitatunga Private Island Suite hosts four adults or a family of two adults and up to three children, offering a total footprint of approximately 607m2. Sitatunga Private Island can host up to eight guests in total sharing the two suites and the two-bedroom Sitatunga Private Island Suite.
Constructed almost entirely of recycled materials, breathing new life into old treasures, the new camp offers discerning explorers a ‘slow safari’ experience that is as sustainable as it is luxurious. Each of the two guest suites, as well as the 2-bedroomed Sitatunga Private Island Suite comes complete with an indoor lounge, gorgeously appointed bathrooms with baths and separate showers, a private deck with outdoor lounging and seating areas as well as a private pool with expansive views over the lagoon that stretches in front of the camp itself.
Sitatunga Private Island will provide guests with the most authentic ‘Robinson Crusoe’-inspired experience and a refuge for the soul in the Okavango Delta. As elaborated by Dereck Joubert, CEO of Great Plains:
“Sitatunga Private Island is unlike any other Great Plains property, pushing the eco-design boundary in a remote region in Botswana whilst also offering the highest level of hospitality and accommodation. It is also one of the few locations in the world where one can still see sitatunga, the rare aquatic antelope, from camp and by boat, which is the main activity here in addition to walking. It is deep Okavango Delta and, as such, is rich in birding. Head out on a boat to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos all day, every day.”
Design
Dereck and Beverly Joubert have been pivotal in the interior design process, imbibing a sense of place and authenticity into the camp, with the giant bamboo fisherman basket structures of the suites paying homage to the Bayei people who historically occupied the area.
“Sitatunga’s design tells the story of the Okavango, a camp surrounded by water, and one that has had indigenous fishermen in the region for over 200 years,” explains Dereck Joubert. “Those fishermen designed and used fishing baskets and traps made from reeds in a funnel shape, so I took this reference and designed the rooms as tents hanging inside of giant fishing baskets. The interiors, as a result, draw on a colour range that mirrors that of the Okavango – a blend of misty greens and light bleached woods.”
A true labour of love, all materials within the camp have been personally sourced by Dereck and Beverly over the years and used to create Sitatunga Private Island. The suites seamlessly blend into the natural landscape of the Okavango Delta, conjuring a strong imaging of its ancestral origins while respecting the local environment. As Joubert explains:
“Sitatunga Private Island is very 'Robinson Crusoe, desert islandish.’ It is designed with a 'salvage' inspired reference. Thick, shaggy thatch covers canvas roofs and walls. There is thick pole woodwork, feeling like masts salvaged from a shipwreck, but the very spacious inner floorspace is actually some of the largest we have ever built. Each suite is set up very high in the ebony trees, a traditional way to seek and find safety, take advantage of the views, and rest in the cool shade. And, of course, to spot sitatunga!”
Activities
A water-based camp, guests can choose from a variety of ‘slow safari’ adventures, from boating safaris and mekoro rides and
more. For the traditionalist, walking safaris and game drives are also available, and for a truly indulgent celebration, guests can even opt for a scenic private helicopter tour of the Okavango Delta – complete with champagne, naturally! Flexibility is at the core of every Great Plains’ stay, and guests are encouraged to create their own unique itinerary in line with their interests, with guidance and recommendations from professional guides who know the Delta like the back of their hand.
“Sitatunga Private Island is the perfect camp to slow down in, to walk, to get on the ever-soothing water”, adds Joubert. “Get on the river. Let its pace determine yours, give yourself to it and find silent moments on your safari. Because, like the river, it is not about the water itself but the journey.”
For those guests keen to unwind within their new home-awayfrom-home in Botswana, Sitatunga Private Island offers yoga mats, an exercise bike, and light weights with in-room massages available upon request. A unique wine cellar and boutique complete with D&B Explorer clothing are also available to guests within the camp. As has become synonymous with a Great Plains Conservation Réserve-Collection safari camp, each suite comes complete with a complimentary professional camera and lens set, for use while out on the water/in the bush, ensuring lifelong memories can be captured during one’s stay.
BOOK IT
Nightly rates at Sitatunga Private Island start from £1,848 per night on an all-inclusive basis. Children must be aged 6 and upwards.
