A NOTE FROM

THE PUBLISHER AFFLUENT kissed 2014 goodbye as the Horse galloped into the sunset, and welcomes 2015 ushering in the Ram. Another New Year and another “diet and exercise yada yada yada” resolution made to be broken as we all rationalize that life is too short, what with all the air disasters, floods, and senseless terrorists attacks in cities that well-travelled Singaporeans can associate with and relate to. The Horse witnessed the affluent exercised much caution, prudence, and self imposed austerity amidst the government’s policies of property curbs, a sharp rise in taxes for luxury and performance cars, with a ripple effect on consumer spending generally. There had been occasions when the affluent’s gatherings were enviously criticized as a “vulgar display of wealth”. On the contrary, such affluent gatherings create a good buzz and show off this City State’s success. There should be no shame for those who work hard to play hard. 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of Singapore as the Nation celebrates SG50 all year long. Let’s hope the affluent come back out to play, and we will continue to feature them and their events in this publication in celebration of life. We all have but one life. Dare to live it to the fullest without fear of others’ envy. Paul Tan Publisher

My love is like a red, red rose In drawing upon an era of romance and elegance, the Bösendorfer Schönbrunn piano becomes a most compelling expression of your affection and devotion. Pictures from left to right:

• Franz Liszt playing on a Bösendorfer grand, for Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth in the Redoute of Buda. Replica by Franz Schmaus and Karl Lafitte. • Bösendorfer Schönbrunn is also available in white finish. • The edition is limited to nine instruments and each will have an individually numbered solid brass plate. • Skilled artisan using traditional sand shading technique on the coloured wood to create a three dimensional effect, a special feature of our marquetry.

For merrymakers, Schönbrunn was where to see and to be seen. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria (and mother of French royal Marie Antoinette) spent her summers here, mingling with many guests that included six-year-old musical prodigy Mozart. Her palace was built and decorated in the baroque style that characterised the 18th century, and came with vast and gorgeous gardens for many outdoor performances and festivals. Such creativity and imagination have found their way to Bösendorfer’s Marquetry Series of limited-edition pianos. Esteemed for an illustrious heritage, inspiring sound and outstanding quality, Bösendorfer is among the world’s oldest piano manufacturers. Most significantly, it remains the only one that constructs the musical instrument based on warm bass, singing treble and rich tone colour, all of which are elements of the very intricate Viennese tradition of piano making. Many great musicians, from Beethoven to Haydn, have resided and worked in the Austrian capital. To achieve that resonating body derived from string instruments, Bösendorfer uses massive resonance spruce exclusively. Over 80 per cent of wood used in their pianos are Austrian spruce tonewood – the highest for pianos. Only trees felled in winter are sourced, and only those that grow at more than 800 metres above sea level in The Alps in Europe are selected. Out of these trees, only those with particularly close and sonically idea tree ring structures are selected. And to maximise quality, Bösendorfer allows the wood to dry naturally in their sprawling 4,500 sq m lumberyard (instead of drying them in modern technology-driven kilns). This means the company has to wait for up to five years before the wood can be further processed.

Like its namesake, the Schönbrunn offers an impressive interpretation of ornamental designs and exotic plant and animal motifs – craftsmen apply traditional sand shading techniques to ensure that the bird and red roses pop up against the coloured wood. The Schönbrunn follows up from where the Hummingbird, the first in the Marquetry Series, left off; the latter features birds but no roses. What makes the Schönbrunn even more precious as a gift is its exclusivity. Only nine units will be produced, with each made only upon order (at press time several orders have already been received, according to a spokesperson from Yamaha). Every piano has a figure – from “1” to “9” on the number plate of solid brass – that you can select, on a first come, first served basis. Bösendorfer is available at Yamaha Music, located at 68 Orchard Road #06-01 Plaza Singapura; Tel: 6740 9327 / 6740 9841. More information at http://sg.yamaha.com and www.boesendorfer.com.

ROGER DUBUIS EXCALIBUR Roger Dubuis unveils unconventional horological approach in creating new masterpieces, skeleton-work Excalibur.

35

Roger Dubuis showcases its pioneering mastery in the domain of contemporary skeleton-work through two distinctive skeleton-work Excalibur models at the SIHH 2015. By adopting a unique approach in its interpretation in the field of horological excellence, Roger Dubuis has made a name for itself in the field of skeleton calibers by consistently mingling aesthetic and technical factors as shown in the latest creations, Excalibur by Roger Dubuis which epitomizes the merging of aesthetics with functionality. Excalibur by Roger Dubuis is made distinct by its legendary connotations and its memorable design codes. These include a round case, luted bezel, triple lugs, dedicated Dauphine hands, which has become the emblem of a subtly offbeat, unconventional and unexpected approach to watch making traditions. This feat has been described as “a combat to overcome all obstacles and to fly high the banner of architectural and technical mechanics” and its pursuit for the best has been given recognition when it was awarded the Poinçon de Genève quality; likening the Excalibur as the warrior in the battlefield of skeleton world of watches. EXCALIBUR SPIDER SKELETON FLYING TOURBILLON The Excalibur Spider collection is made spectacular not only because of its skeleton movement but also because it encompasses a skeletonized case, lange and hands. This latest collection comes with an unconventional twist that Roger Dubuis has given to the principle of skeleton-work that is endowed with the stature of a true contemporary art form. It has improved visibility, intricate sculptural effects and enhanced transparency. The Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon has signature features of Roger Dubuis skeleton watches using the star-shaped design, the tourbillon carriage fashioned into a Celtic cross. Besides its high-end finishes including a circular-grained plate, this Tourbillon pushes boundaries in all directions with its light yet robust 45 mm titanium case which is also open worked. Powered by the mechanical handwound RD505SQ movement, this timepiece bears all the hallmarks of technical feats and functional designs achieved by Roger Dubuis.

36

AFFLUENT timepiece

EXCALIBUR AUTOMATIC SKELETON The Excalibur Automatic Skeleton is another fine example of Roger Dubuis overcoming technical and design challenges in the world of creating masterpieces in watch making. It displays an optimal command of technical and aesthetic parameters, including meticulous expertise on the gear wheels and finishes; and maintaining the transparency of skeleton-work despite the self-winding train and the micro-rotor, while achieving sufficient winding power. Roger Dubuis takes pride that the Excalibur Automatic Skeleton manifested the success in displaying the Warrior mind-set. In pursuing excellence in its venture into the skeleton-work, Roger Dubuis has succeeded in its impressive feats of miniaturization. Just like its groundbreaking micro-rotor which is also featured in this model, this was the perfect opportunity to reveal the prestigious finishes that earned the 100 percent Poinçon de Genève certification. It comes in a 42 mm pink gold case and bezel framed in a spectacular 3D effect created by raising the famous skeleton ‘star shape’ and working within the constraints presented by the height of the open worked micro-rotor. It is interesting to note that designers and developers face the classic paradox in the process of creating this piece: the weight of a micro-rotor is generally considered a positive aspect

Diamond Industries Jewellery Company is known for its impressive selection of rare gems including one of the largest collection of internationally-certified Tanzanites — the stars in its latest collection.

AFFLUENT rocks

Launched in 1989 by veteran jeweller Frank Chew, Diamond Industries Jewellery Company (DIJC or Diamond Industries) has been at the forefront of the exquisite jewellery and gemstone industry. Equipped with its own in house design outfit and state of the art production facilities, Diamond Industries offers a wide range of diamond jewellery and other rare gemstones and houses one of the largest showrooms in Asia at the PSA Vista building. It boasts an in-house workshop housed with a team of experienced craftsmen and artisans who can offer on-the-spot services for items purchased from DIJC, such as ring alteration, polishing, cleaning, setting, and minor repairs.

Today, its exclusive DIJC showroom showcases an extensive collection of internationally-certified (GIA, IGI, HRD) Tanzanites, diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies, and other fine gems jewellery that thrills even the most discerning private jewellery collectors. Diamond Industries, which has become renowned for its exceptional jewellery collections, is marking the New Year with a spectacular collection called Cool Blue Tanzanite. This collection is made alluring with some of the rarest and highly coveted gems. Using Tanzanite, the blue gemstone which has been described as the most exciting rare stone

of the 21st century as its focus, DIJC has also combined diamonds, white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold in this exquisite collection for its theme Captivating Heritage. According to the managing director of DIJC, Ms Olivia Chew, “Tanzanite exudes great opulence and exclusivity as it is one of the most coveted precious stones and has captured the world’s attention for high quality gemstones along with diamonds, rubies, sapphires, & emeralds. It has great allure not only because of its extraordinary cool blue colour but also because of its rarity and availability in large sizes.” Tanzanite is highly prized as the rare stone exudes an extraordinary colour which has been described as a rich velvety blue with a hint of violet at its best. It is highly valued because it is 1000 times rarer than diamonds as it is found only in one place on earth, near the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa with unique conditions. It is fast becoming a rarity as it has been estimated that the supply of Tanzanite is diminishing with a limited supply remaining in the mine. Diamond Industries takes great pride in having the largest inventory of internationally-certified Tanzanites in Singapore. “Each piece of Tanzanite is specially selected by our chairman and founder Frank Chew before the gemstone is adorned with

the combination of brilliant-cut diamonds and coloured gold, set in jewellery designs that are not only breath-taking but are sure to make unforgettable impressions,” explains Olivia. Paying personal attention to details in producing each and every exquisite piece of jewellery is key to the company’s success. In fact, each and every gemstone from Diamond Industries is carefully selected and personally scrutinized by Frank Chew himself. “This is to ensure that the piece is not only mesmerizing but also value-for-money,” said Olivia. “After selection, each gemstone is securely set with a few to thousands of pieces of brilliant-cut diamonds, depending on the design. Each piece of gemstone is then reviewed under the loupe to ensure that each stone setting is of the ideal height and angle. Only those which passed all the stringent requirements will make it to the next process. ” Diamond Industries has since gained its reputation for creating its own exclusive collections crafted by its professional craftsmen and artisans. “Each jewellery piece is never final without the skillful burnishing, polishing processes and thorough checks before it becomes a collectible masterpiece,” she added. + Diamond Industries Jewellery Company Pte Ltd 20 Harbour Drive, PSA Vista Ground Floor, Singapore 117612 Tel: +65 6872 1698 www.diamondindustries.com.sg IMAGES COURTESY OF DIAMOND INDUSTRIES JEWELLERY COMPANY | WRITTEN BY SANDY LEE

Minutes With Kerrie Hess

World-renowned fashion illustrator Kerrie Hess divulges some of the exciting projects that lie ahead for her this year, along with a few of her favourite things. Fashionistas and label lovers would almost certainly be familiar with Kerrie Hess, whose chic and romantic illustrations have graced the campaigns of iconic fashion names such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Alexander McQueen. With numerous upcoming projects in the pipeline, it seems that 2015 is going to be a stellar year for the Australian-born talent, indeed. “I am very excited to be currently working with Ladurée Paris and Lancôme Paris on collaborations for this year,” Kerrie shares. She recently moved back to her home in Brisbane, after living in Paris for 18 months. “I also have a solo exhibition in the works, as well as a whole new range of prints to come in my online print shop, which I can’t wait to release!”

© BONNIE CEE

Beyond her passion-turned-career in illustration, Kerrie Hess tells us – in no particular order – about the other little joys in her life. Paris. I miss my daily trip to the boulangerie downstairs to stock up on freshly-baked baguettes; shopping strolls on rue Saint-Honoré; and meeting friends for coffee at little Left Bank cafés. Macarons. You can’t beat a salted caramel macaron from Ladurée in Paris. This is another thing that I miss being able to get hold of on a daily basis! Cristal Room Baccarat. Definitely the most romantic restaurant I have dined at in Paris. It’s all pink and crystal – a magical place with a gorgeous fireplace and satin hooded chairs.

Top left and right Australian-born Kerrie Hess has illustrated for some of the top fashion designers in the world; Kerrie’s works feature a distinct style of minimal strokes and uplifting splashes of colour.

LOOK THIS WAY Put your best face forward and turn heads with these spring/summer 2015 beauty trends. Who says looking gorgeous is alot of work?

LOOK #1 - PURPLE REIGN When it comes to the colour du jour for the upcoming season, purple seems to be taking centerstage at the recent spring/ summer 2015 runway shows. From pretty lilac as at Derek Lam to the deep, smoky grape hue seen at Vera Wang or the royal hue of the seventies era at Matthew Williamson, it’s easy to look elegant and pretty when going out for a date or for a night out with the girls.

LOOK #2 - SHINE ON Say goodbye to heavily powdered, matte-looking skin. This season, dewy complexions, as seen at Marni and Donna Karan, are a sure winner. It is an age-old beauty secret that having light reflected off your face will give the illusion of smoother, younger-looking skin. Go the way of Thakoon and use lipgloss on the eyelids to create that highshine look with a slight tint. Prep your skin first with a clear waxbased balm to prevent the gloss from feeling sticky, then apply a translucent gloss in a pastel, pink, or sorbet shades.

55

LAURA MERCIER

LOOK #3 - BOLD LIPS It has been a while since the bold lips in deep shades of red made its appearance on the runway. But this season, lipstick fans can rejoice. At the spring/ summer 2015 runway shows, every hue of lipstick made a stunning comeback on the lips of the models. Lipstick fans rejoice, every imaginable hue of red was present at the spring/summer shows, after the almost entirely lipstick-free autumn looks. At Missoni it was orange-tinged, at Burberry Prorsum and Zac Posen it was bold scarlet and at Topshop Unique and Dolce & Gabbana the lips came in the richest of smudgy berry hues. Whatever your choice may be.

LOOK #4 - FINE LINES The eyes, as they say are windows to your soul. Whether you’re into subtle definitions or wanting to make a statement, display your peepers this season with jet-black eyeliners. Black liquid eyeliners went from clean and slightly flicked at Oscar de la Renta, which recalls a more classic 1960s looks, to the more dramatic winged-out versions at Saint Laurent Paris. Whatever your preference may be, the way to go to stay on-trend this season is to line those peepers. But how does one choose the right eyeliner for one’s eyes? If you’re a novice or not comfortable with liquid or gel, choose pencil liners as it makes drawing them on easier. Also, it provides a more natural blend with the eyeshadow later. For clearer, well-defined lines, pick liquid liners and for more control over the thickness of your liner, apply gel eyeliners with a brush.

This season of passion, make a date with Desire Aesthetics and fall in love with your skin all over again. The award-winning medical aesthetics group offers a comprehensive range of anti-aging, skin rejuvenation and body sculpting services, using top-of-the-line technology and products that produce clinically proven results. Its exclusive appointment-only boutiques are located at the prime districts of One North, Tanjong Pagar (International Plaza), City Hall (Millenia Walk), and more recently, River Valley (Nathan Loft), which marks the group’s fourth and newest outlet in Singapore, launched in late 2014. Be it a romantic rendezvous with that special someone or simply a night out with your BFFs this Valentine’s Day, complement the little black dress and make-up with visibly clear, wonderfully smooth skin that all women desire – and all at highly affordable rates, too. Enjoy top-of-the-line services at some of the lowest price points in the market, within the lavish interiors and facilities of each Desire Aesthetics outlet.

PORCELAIN PERFECTION – 3G INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL) “With trials sessions beginning at just $68 and packages that average to about $50 per session, our 3G IPL programme is a highly popular choice among our clients,” says Chee Su Ling, owner of Desire Aesthetics. Desire Aesthetics’ 3G IPL combines two revolutionary technologies to produce a plethora of benefits. Third generation Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is used to gradually eliminate discolourations resulting from sun damage such as blemishes, age spots and freckles; broken capillaries; and signs of rosacea, a condition similar to acne. At the same time, collagen production is stimulated while pores are reduced to produce a smoother texture. In conjunction with controlled multiple pulses of light, a dose of bi-polar radio frequency (RF) energy is also applied to catalyse collagen production to increase the elasticity and suppleness of your skin, plumping out fine lines in the process for an antiaging effect. Expect a fairer complexion, rejuvenated and lifted skin, and also the removal of unwanted hairs after just six treatments. Treatments are advised to be conducted on a weekly basis over six weeks.

Above The posh interiors and tasteful furnishings of each outlet provide solace from a stressful world.

BANISH UNSIGHTLY CELLULITE – PRESSURE THERAPY BODY SLIMMING The development of cellulite – protruding fat pockets that causes the skin to appear dimpled and bumpy – is a common problem found at the thigh and buttock areas of women. Desire Aesthetics offers a safe, comfortable and effective non-invasive solution to creating firmer, tighter and more resilient cellulite-free skin with its Pressure Therapy Body Slimming treatment.

65

Su Ling reveals: “This treatment is one of our best sellers at $38 per trial, and $988 for 30 areas in a package. While the tummy is considered one area, thighs would require action on four areas for the front, back and sides.” Using a combination of suction, heat and RF energy, fat cells are kneaded and selectively heated, and subsequently dislodged for expulsion through the body’s natural metabolic processes. Repeated sessions on the various problem areas will increase lymphatic drainage to speed up the process of metabolism and fat drainage, as well as increase collagen production to add to the skin’s suppleness. + Desire Aesthetics (Strictly by appointment only) 9 One North Gateway #01-44, Shops @ One North Singapore 138643 Tel: +65 6406 7947 10 Anson Road #03-33, International Plaza Singapore 079903 Tel: +65 6222 8586 9 Raffles Boulevard #02-23, Millenia Walk Singapore 039596 Tel: +65 9787 5262 31 Nathan Road #02-03, Nathan Loft Singapore 248749 Tel: +65 6685 5637 www.desire.sg

DRIVING IN LUXURY It was a day of luxury education for VIP guests of Aston Martin as they set out to learn about the chic car and test drive new models. Organised by Aston Martin UK, the twoday event, which was held in October, saw 15 lucky participants visiting the automobile’s factory in Warwick, in England, where they then had lunch at the design studio. The car enthusiasts were then transported to Buckinghamshire, where they were provided a grand tour of Aston Martin Works. The day ended with a delightful dinner at W-One where guests mingled with their partners, as well as members of Aston Martin UK, before retiring for the day. The fun continues the very next day when these elite guests were given an opportunity of a lifetime to test drive a fleet of Aston Martin supercars. As the company is the main vehicle sponsor for the James Bond movies, the participants test-drove the cars on the same track that James Bond, played by Daniel Craig in the film, did his high-speed chase. +

WHITE CHRISTMAS The beautiful W Hotel Sentosa was the setting for an elegant Christmas dinner celebration in December. Organised by Exoticars Club for its esteemed members, the guests were treated to melodic choral music of Christmas carols and songs performed by the NUSChoir group from the National University of Singapore. In keeping to the wintry theme of the season, a snow machine was brought in to produce snowflakes indoors as the club members, who were mostly dressed in either white or in festive red, mingle amongst themselves and exchanging festive greetings. As they tucked into the delicious food, the guests were entertained by a three-piece band as well as a performance by an acapella group. As part of the event’s decor, there were two big Santa Claus and flurries of snow filled the ballroom, created by an indoor snow machine. +

AFFLUENT discovery

A Natural Selection Andrew Dixon found paradise by purchasing his own island, which now welcomes holidaymakers.

73

There is nothing about Andrew Dixon that would give away that he owns his own island. Casually dressed, the affable gent sparks with enthusiasm as he recounts his journey from jaded corporate worker to content island dweller. Dixon had initially made Singapore home in 1998 while under the employ of a bank, but quickly developed a fascination with the islands off Indonesia. “The islands off Australia were a consideration too,” shares the Sydneysider who eventually bought Nikoi Island in 2003 after a few years of browsing his options, because its tropical weather was much more attractive than the climate of the Tasman Sea and southern Indian Ocean. A keen camper, outdoorsman Dixon’s original intention was to possess his own distant getaway. “What I bought for myself was a view. I could walk barefoot from my cottage to the beach. However, service staff can regress in service standards if they are not constantly engaged,” he divulges of how his dream retirement plan found him back at work. “To keep my staff busy while I was away, I started thinking about turning my island into a business.” What’s it like owning an island, as compared to other ultimate luxury purchases like customising a private jet or furnishing a dream penthouse? There’s a bit of kick to it, Dixon admits. “There’s a lovely romance to owning your own island and I like the natural beauty I find on Nikoi Island. I like being completely removed – I haven’t got any neighbours.”

74

AFFLUENT discovery

An invested ecologist, Dixon had Nikoi Island’s villas crafted from salvaged driftwood and bamboo. These living quarters are free of both mosquitoes and pesticides, using an earth-friendly time-release water collection system to prevent mosquito breeding. By 2008, he was running the Nikoi Island resort fulltime, which has since expanded to 21 rooms but remains a very exclusive and very private holiday destination. A customer-dedicated hotelier, his daily endeavours include expanding the island’s immense cellar of discerning wines and spirits, importing

snorkelling, diving and water sports equipment for guests’ pleasure, and cultivating a burgeoning organic farm for purpose of guest consumption. “We are always looking at ways to make the resort run more efficiently and sustainably. We would love to be able to run the resort entirely on renewable energies and believe that as technologies improve and become more affordable, we will be able to achieve this goal.”

75

It was matter of time before National Geographic took notice of Dixon’s solar-powered resort and recognised his commendable efforts. He is humble about this lofty accolade and revealed that he genuinely enjoys tasks like fine-tuning the houses’ natural breeze cooling systems. “We want guests to feel like they are staying on a friend’s private island. For this reason you won’t find signs and long lists of instructions and dos and don’ts. Most activities are included in the price so guests can go for a kayak or a sail without feeling that they are time constrained. Kids in particular love this freedom and for them the island is perfect to roam free of any cares and with that there is a wonderful sense of discovery and independence for them. This gives parents some time to relax and enjoy the island as well.” Dixon, who also heads The Island Foundation, speaks with a great enthusiasm for people. Most recently, The Island Foundation had made a fishing net of 14,000 crystals, in collaboration with Swarovski. This immense undertaking and majestic work of art was exhibited at the National Museum of Singapore and all proceeds of its auction went to boosting employment opportunities, education and infrastructure of the Riau Islands. “Not only is Nikoi a private island but I wanted it to possess a true feeling of having escaped the masses, through architecture and a feeling of space and natural environment, which differentiate this island experience.” + www.nikoi.com

UNDERSTANDING SPONSORSHIPS... If you are a member of a social organization which gives you a host of benefits beyond the value of your membership fee, have you ever paused to ponder how the leaders of the organization are able to balance the books? If your membership fee barely foots the costs of your benefits, where is the money coming from? The magic word is “sponsorships”. Why do vendors sponsor an organization? Let’s be realistic. Vendors regard sponsorships as an investment i.e. vendors make a judgment call that not only would their sponsorship capital be recouped within the sponsorship period, they are banking on the hope that the sponsorship exposure would bring them business way beyond their sponsorship outlay. How do vendors decide which organization to sponsor? Some organizations tout themselves as having a database of high net worth individuals but what good are such individuals to a sponsor if they are just free loaders who absorb the sponsorship benefits like a sponge and give nothing back to the sponsor in return? Depending on the product the sponsor is selling, they do understand that it takes time and effort to convert members of the sponsored organization into customers, especially if the sponsor is selling big ticket items like million dollar investment products, luxury cars, etc. In this regard, a commercially savvy sponsored organization could do its part by creating opportunities for the sponsor to network with its members; and the least the members should do to “give back” to the sponsor is to participate in the organized events to socialize with the sponsor even if they do not need the sponsor’s product for the moment.

... AND VALUE ADDING TO YOUR ORGANIZATION The reputation and standing of an organization within that class of community as well as the larger community is built from a combination of how the leaders run the organization and the general conduct of its members. Whilst the leaders focus on handling external parties including vendors, sponsors, the relevant authorities, as well as its day-to-day accounts, regulatory and administrative matters, its “ordinary” members could do their part to support the organization, including a combination of the following:(a) Conduct himself in a fashion that befits the reputation of the organization and upholds the spirit of the organization’s collaborations with its sponsors, vendors and partners; (b) Participate in events organized for them; (c) Socialize with the organization’s sponsors and consciously support their products whenever possible; (d) Speak well of the organization within and beyond the organization; (e) Appreciate and support the volunteers who are keeping the organization in shape for everybody’s benefit; for the dynamism or lethargy of the organization is directly related to the quality of the volunteers who are running it. The reputation and good standing of an organization is a fragile asset that can easily be tarnished by a combination of the following conduct of its members:(a) The “ugly Singaporean” conduct - a calculative paymaster who mistreats sponsors, vendors, service providers and wanting everything on the cheap; (b) “Squeezing” sponsors and vendors without regard for their economic or commercial viability; (c) Misleading sponsors and vendors and giving them a wild goose chase. If members of a sponsored organization want to continue to enjoy the benefits of a sponsorship, they would have to understand the dynamics set out above and do their part to sustain the interests and generosity of the sponsors. It is unrealistic for the members to want the benefits but not support the sponsor’s products or at least socialize with them. * The writer is a lawyer involved in various voluntary and social organizations.

Shall We Dance?

Love is all around, and Lladró keeps you in the mood for all year with these precious porcelain masterpieces. Dancing is arguably one of the most romantic and pleasurable activities for a couple. It requires you to stay in close proximity and move together to the same beat. A story lies behind the music and genre, which requires you to almost always indulge in some degree of imagination. And an important milestone in the history of dance is none other than the swing, which originated in the US and became a worldwide phenomenon in the 1950s. And Lladró evokes the joy and energy of the dance with its Let’s Swing collection. In this vivid depiction where the man tilts his body towards his partner while what appears like the midst of twirling and twisting, the emotions of fun and irreverence are clearly visible on the faces. The woman’s all-pastel ensemble, including poofy skirt and Mary Jane shoes, keeps the vibe true to the merrymaking Fifties. Just as how it has aptly captured liveliness, Lladró also portrays introspective moments through pieces like I Love You, Dad. This highly sculptural creation in white matte porcelain focuses on the bond and interaction between a child and his father. The

latter appears deep in thought, as if savouring every moment of this time with his little one. Handmade in the brand’s workshops in Valencia, Spain, Lladró adheres to a traditional process to produce its porcelain collectibles. Every step, from sketching to firing, is completed by artists and artisans. The sculptor creates a model of the sketch and engraves in details, textures and features. This model is subsequently divided into various sections to be reproduced in porcelain, then fitted together again. After sculpture is painted and coated with a layer of varnish, it is fired in the kiln for more than 20 hours. It is here

that the porcelain vitrifies, the varnish crystallises and Lladró’s true colours are brought to the surface. Made with the exceptional artistic quality, every Lladró porcelain sculpture deserves the highest appreciation and a place in your home. + Lladró 290 Orchard Road #01-28 Paragon Tel: +65 6738 3900 391 Orchard Road Level 2 Takashimaya Department Store Tel: +65 6737 6979 www.lladro.com.sg

AFFLUENT moves

BALLROOM BLITZ Ready or not, the Pagani Huayra propels one to the height of exclusive luxury at 370km/h.

The Pagani Huayra conquers the road in confidence and effortlessness. The 6-litre twin-turbo V12 supercar is a responsive ride that accelerates comfortably, its driver and passengers unbeknownst to the ferocity that third parties experience. If one prefers to put its state-of-the-art engine’s 12 cylinders to the test however, its acceleration feels almost like minor whiplash. Comparable to a walk in the park for the car yet also likened to a bungee jump by motor enthusiasts, the virile steed sprints from zero to a hundred in just over three seconds. Deservedly named after the South American pagan god of the wind, the Huayra zips through the air at a top speed of 370km/h. Doors open to reveal a ravishing cockpit that marries vintage charm and post-modern aesthetics, its inviting titanium-fitted interior already sets the would-be driver’s heart racing; fine Italian leather that has been trimmed and stitched by hand swathes an intricately detailed cabin with an almost steampunk look. Anyone who’s stooped and nestled him or herself into its driver’s seat will admit that they cowered for at least a moment before being able to gather their thoughts and engage the supercar’s controls.

Whenever you are ready, place your foot gently on its ferocious accelerator and feel yourself rocket across the tarmac, the Pagani Huayra’s chrome finished central exhaust almost propelling the car forward as the pipes scramble to push out carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and half-ignited carbon compounds, and as the influx shutters of its combustion system persevere to let in more oxygen. Wheels cast from a solid piece of space-grade aluminium each, spin in a frenzy that hypnotises onlookers. Enjoy the shift of gears using the rear-wheel drive Pagani Huayra’s gleaming gear stick. Take in how well it negotiates tight corners, with the help of flaps along its flanks that deploy at high speeds. When you have come to terms with the fleeting increase of its digital display’s velocimeter, tap lightly on the handles behind its veneer finished steering wheel to unleash the raw power of the car’s turbo function. Weighing just 1350kg, the potent Huayra is Horacio Pagani’s dream realised. “Since the original design of the Zonda was done in the early 90s, the first thought was that it was now an obsolete project,” the Argentine founder of Pagani Automobili S.p.A. shares. A gifted and decorated automobile maker, Horacio previously disclosed that most of his childhood was spent daydreaming about supercars and even trying to build them.

AFFLUENT moves

The prolific engineer’s solution was to reinvent the Pagani, divulging of what was initially referred to as “Project C9” until the team agreed upon an apt name, “we decided to imagine the car totally different in form, dimension, dynamics and technology, all this without losing the essence of our approach, to follow a concept born in the Renaissance where Leonardo Da Vinci told us that art and science are disciplines that need to walk alongside. The whole car is shaped as a wing so it was necessary to create a high front to reduce the length of the upper part of this wing to counteract lift.” In a sharp swerve from the bold fenders and edgy nooks expected of the presentation of a supercar, the brand new chassis he selected for the Huayra was a meticulously engineered one, streamlined like the silver arrow from motor racing’s early days. Its engine was outsourced to Formula One champion Mercedes-AMG. The product of complementing a svelte, aerodynamic chassis and low center of gravity with a 720hp 12-cylinder (as opposed to the quieter 6-cylinder engine allowed in Formula One racing) is an impressively dynamic and agile beast with unimpeachable handling.

Its 12 cylinders growling loud like thunder, the god of the wind is a rare and beautiful sight. One of less than four Pagani cars registered in Singapore, its asking price is just under SGD4 million, placing it in a certain echelon of exclusivity. Unusual looking creatures, catching a glimpse of a dashing Pagani in just about any city in the world is as uncommon a sighting as spotting a Koenigsegg, an SSC or a leprechaun. + EuroSports Auto Pte Ltd 30 Teban Gardens Crescent Singapore 608927 Tel: +65 6565 5995 info@eurosportsauto.com.sg

AFFLUENT personality

After The Love Is Gone… Matrimonial lawyer WONG KAI YUN shares her experiences in dealing with the breakdown of a marriage, and how to untangle the complications arising from a divorce. Tongue in cheek, it can be said that Ms Wong Kai Yun is in the business of liberation. She sets unhappily married couples free from their chains and balls. You would want this aggressive matrimonial litigator on your side if you were going through a divorce; or at least pray that she is not your opponent on the other side! No wonder then that one appreciative client, an MNC executive, once sent her a highly unconventional bouquet made up of chilli padis to symbolise her impression of Kai Yun as “red, hot and potent.” Co-Managing Partner of Chia Wong LLP, Kai Yun is one of the top matrimonial lawyers in the country. SPECIALISED DIVERSITY With a niche focus on family matters, Kai Yun is popular with high net worth individuals wanting to work out how to move on from the many complications arising from a divorce and to maximize their financial settlement. Many who seek out Kai Yun’s services hail from affluent backgrounds, with her firm’s discerning clientele including business owners, directors of multinational corporations, and even other lawyers. While all divorces follow a similar procedure, there is often more at stake for high net-worth individuals. Kai Yun elaborates, “In Singapore, the average middle class couple’s main assets might comprise a condominium

apartment, a car, and CPF accounts. However, a wealthy client’s portfolio might also involve complex financial structures such as family businesses and trust funds. A wellheeled couple undergoing a divorce could also have assets parked in various foreign jurisdictions with a beach home in Phuket, a winter home in Europe, pension funds in London, and preference shares of New York-listed companies.” Thus, Kai Yun’s keen familiarity with the nature of these different classes of assets is crucial – it would be hard to

45

lay claim to assets that you do not understand. Incidentally, she is also a registered practitioner of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, a leading worldwide professional body for practitioners in the fields of trusts, estates and related issues. Kai Yun is so good at helping the expatriate husbands safeguard their assets, or the expatriate wives recover more than their fair share of matrimonial assets, that many of her clients recommend her to their divorcing expatriate friends before she gets snapped up by the other bitter spouse. “The expatriate community is quite small and whenever any of their marriages hit the rocks, they tend to recommend their lawyers to one another so the few divorce lawyers serving this community are always the usual suspects”, explained Kai Yun. With two decades of experience in legal practice, Kai Yun also handles a myriad of other matters in addition to her matrimonial practice. Several institutions and listed companies see her as their “go to” legal advisor for their various corporate and litigation matters. Beyond her caseload, Kai Yun also keeps an eye on the cutting edge of local legal developments as the Executive Editor of the Singapore Journal of Legal Studies, one of the oldest and highly respected legal publications in the Commonwealth. SENSITIVE PROFESSIONALISM That said, Kai Yun is quick to point out that unlike commercial disputes, divorces are more than just about dollars and cents. Said Kai Yun, “Marriages typically involve substantial emotional investment and sacrifice for both spouses. For example, wives might have had to give up promising careers of their own in order to help raise a family or even re-locate to far-flung destinations with their husbands. Where a couple have children, who gets custody can also be a heart-wrenching and bitterly fought issue.” With an increasing number of expatriates based in Singapore, she revealed that more than a hundred of her cases in the past five years involved individuals with foreign citizenship. In such situations, children could also hold dual-citizenship, further complicating the outcome on arrangements for their care.

With so much at stake, it is only natural that matrimonial proceedings are often fraught with emotion. It is difficult for clients to think clearly about legal issues or long-term practical and financial matters concerning the well-being of themselves or their children. In such circumstances, clients take comfort in the fact that they have Kai Yun as their advisor and advocate. Regarded as a steady and calming presence during a period of upheaval in their lives, she realises that whilst a client’s divorce is but one of many files she is handling at any one time; for that client, it is about possibly the biggest crisis in his or her life. “I do not take my role or dispense advice lightly”, says Kai Yun. LEGAL EAGLE Kai Yun’s reputation is held in high regard by movers and shakers both locally as well as overseas. She is a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a worldwide association of practising lawyers who are recognized by their peers as the most experienced and expert family law specialists in their respective countries. In 2013, Kai Yun was included as one of a select few of Singaporean lawyers listed on the Citywealth Leaders List, a global list of important players highly regarded by professionals in the financial services industry. She was also honoured in 2013 as part of the inaugural IFC Power Women Top 100 list of the most powerful women in government, private wealth, private client advisory and philanthropy across the world’s financial centres. She was named again in the IFC Power Women Top 200 list in 2014. “I am very humbled by these accolades and awards”, confessed Kai Yun. FUTURE ENDEAVOURS When asked if she has acted for more husbands or wives as clients, this feisty, versatile and highly sought after litigator quickly points out that she represents the husbands as comfortably and competently as she does the wives. “If I become too well known for representing either husbands or wives exclusively, I straight away lose half of my potential clients!”, Kai Yun laughs. No worries there. From what we have heard so far, Kai Yun is destined to have her plate full from both quarters for many years to come. +

AFFLUENT indulgence

Food lovers learned the art of pleasure during an evening of degustation paired with wines from Chateau Lafon-Rochet. Members of the Chaine de Rottiseurs Singapore were among the select group of gourmets who enjoyed a degustation evening at the Sentosa Golf Club to sample an exquisite dinner. Each dish was specially paired with wines from the Chateau Lafon-Rochet including Lafon Rochet 1996, 2000, 2006, 2008, Pelerins de Lafon 2009 and Pelerins de Lafon 2000 which are imported by Auric Pacific Marketing. Executive chef Terence Chew of Sentosa Golf Club whetted our appetite with crisp foie gras chawanmushi which was paired with Lafon Rochet 1996 for the appetizer. A second red wine, Lafon Rochet 2000 was served with Omega 3 fed barramundi in superior soy with ginger and scallion. The fish was well received and made most enjoyable with the deep red wines that give a smooth finishing. The chef also prepared another dish using the Singapore produced Omega 3 fed barramundi with Iberico ham in oyster butter. This was the first time that the Singapore farmed barramundi from Kuhlbarra was used locally as this fish has been exported to Australia in the last six years. In addition diners were

also treated to roasted squab and fresh mushroom risotto, charred black Angus beef rib and fresh apple tarragon sorbet to end the meal.

The Art Of Giving Pleasure Classification of 1855,” he said. An agricultural engineer and oenologist, he joined the Chateau Lafon-Rochet in 2009. Leclercq pointed out this was in the same vicinity as the vineyards that produced some of the most expensive wines in the world.

Diners were impressed with the wines which were served throughout the meal and were thrilled to meet wine maker Lucas Leclercq from Chateau LafonRochet, a winery in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. “The wine produced here was classified as one of ten Quatrièmes Crus (or commonly known as 4th Growth) in the historic Bordeaux Wine Official

“The trend today is not to have too many rules and be taken by clever marketing but to discover what gives you pleasure when you are eating or drinking,” he told us. He was pleased with the pairing of the red wines with the Barramundi – and his message is: forget about the rule that fish goes with white wines and to explore different wines that please your palette. Leclercq added, “My work is really to make wines that give pleasure to people who enjoy eating and drinking. We have an excellent team and constantly looking at how we can improve and ensure that whatever we do each day, it is to make it the best as we can. For me, the best wine is really about who you are drinking with.” + All images A degustation evening of special dish including Singapore produced Omega 3 fed barramundi from Kuhlbarra paired with wines from the Chateau Lafon-Rochet.

CONVERSATION Torn between love and lust? Homegrown furniture retailer XZQT indulges you with equal measures of both with its line-up of uber-chic sensations.

PIECES

The furniture a couple chooses for their home reflects more than just their own tastes in style and living. It also expresses how they have overcome aesthetic differences and unified their dreams and goals. Thankfully, marking another milestone in your relationship gets easier with your time together. Or, the compromise becomes more congenial simply because of the availability of options, particularly if these pieces also happen to be impeccably crafted with beautiful details and intelligent design. PLAY CATCH-UP Where the Auto-Reverse sofa is concerned, first impressions rarely last. Conceived by upholstered furniture company Arketipo Firenze (now owned by Cattelan Italia), its casual insouciance belies an elegance that’s driven by contrasts for a vibe that pulls together the best of both worlds. The structure, with those slender and understated legs, appears immediately as if it’s afloat. But linger a little, and you will notice the comfy seat cushions, with flouncy edges that bestow a sense of movement and visual

softness to the sofa for an instantly beckoning charm. The cushion cover comes in double sides of leather and fabric to highlight the sturdy but very quirky design, while juxtaposing strength and warmth all at once. Both are held together by a zip on four corners of the cushion. MAKE THE NIGHTS EVEN BETTER If sleeping in is one of your greatest luxuries on a dayoff, make it count with a just-as-lavish Bonaldo Basket double bed. Designed by Mauro Lipparini, who is known for his natural minimalist style, this will turn your bedroom into a most beckoning enclave yet. Distinguished by a clean-cut silhouette, its softly padded headboard is, however, rounded at the sides to leave you feeling even more protected for a more restful slumber. And since you will be spending at least eight hours here, know that the tactile bit is also well taken care of too. You can choose from fabric, leather or eco-leather, with fully removable covers.

DRIZZLE & SIZZLE Dining and wining calls for excellent functionality, and the Skorpio Round table from Cattelan Italia is evidently built to entertain, even in the most compact spaces. Created by Andrea Lucatello, this encapsulates the award-winning industrial designer’s vision of exceptional versatility and avant-garde aesthetic. Among its variety of table top options is an optional swivelling tray (pick from white, black or graphitepainted extra-clear frosted glass), which helps to optimise the round surface for especially extensive spreads. Suitable for seven to 10 people, this lends an inimitable touch to every contemporary environs. Even on quieter days, it’s great as a statement piece on its own, thanks to an eye-catching steel base that’s topped with extra-clear glass with bevelled edges. The top is also available in warm walnut or light oak. Tip: complete the curvaceous theme by teaming the table with one or several Magda Dining Chairs. +

Preening and prepping for those important occasions often means no effort must be spared to keep your bathroom smart and chic.

AFFLUENT living

Size does not necessarily matter, especially where you indulge in the most intimate and pampering rituals. Even an impeccably turned-out personality such as fashion designer Tom Ford says, “Every man should have a magnifying mirror. If you look good magnified, you are good to go.” That’s not all. Among the most personal habits a bathroom can single out is your attention to hygiene – grubby Harry is no dream date even by most forgiving standards. But while it’s tempting to keep the space largely practical (read: boring), it’s far more interesting to focus efforts on upping the appeal with

KEUCO - Royal 60

the right design and several key accessories. After all, a stylish and well-organised bathroom says just that about you as a homeowner too. For starters, if there isn’t time to rid clutter, hide it instead in a mirror cabinet. Keuco has a collection that will instantly leave friends and guests impressed – thanks to innovative features such as adjustable glass shelves, lights and sockets for electric toothbrushes and razors, as well as doors that gently lift up. Made exclusively at the company’s Gutersloh plant in Germany, every cabinet is superbly crafted, easy to install, and even comes with a fiveyear warranty. “Our products are in a class of their own. Their main characteristics are outstanding quality and longevity, excellent ergonomic features, innovative technology and exciting designs. That is why many of our products have been distinguished with renowned design prizes, among others also with the coveted Red Dot [Award],” says Engelbert Himrich, managing partner of Keuco. One fine example is the Royal Reflex. Available in five size variations, its measurements can go up to a generous 1,300x700x150mm. It is fronted by three-hinged double-sided crystal mirror doors that accommodate six glass shelves of space for skincare, makeup and medicines. A fluorescent light tube at the top keeps the area adequately and elegantly illuminated. For the more compact bathroom, a Royal 30 does the job well, with its

600x800x143mm proportions. Besides offering up to four fully mirrored doors, it also comes in a tall unit for added flexibility to suit diverse design themes and lifestyle needs. Ample and creative storage is not the only characteristic of smart design planning in the bathroom. This is, after all, where you ensure that the sunblock goes on evenly on your face, check if the blowout is keeping bouncy, or whether you’ve ODed on the black eyeliner. So complete your bathroom suite with one of Keuco’s medley of mirrors – like the Edition Palais, which is lit from all sides, and distinguished by its bevelled horizontal edges. New to Keuco’s product line-up, meanwhile, is the iLook_move. These multiple award-winning cosmetic mirrors successfully merge design and technology by concealing the arms in wall for a super-neat, no-cable look. The one-light colour model is built with LED light technology and a magnification factor of up to five times, and can be operated with a single switch. The five-light colour model, on the other hand, can be controlled via a glass panel with touch sensor. Each is available in a round or angular shape. As Hartmut Dalheimer, managing director of Keuco, says: “Trend-setting innovations, premium design, long-lasting quality – that is what Keuco, the brand for the bathroom, stands for. As a German brand manufacturer, we have been established worldwide for many years. From the ideal to the idea, from the idea to the innovation – Keuco unites beauty in the bathroom with uncompromising functionality.” +

Valentino x Fornasetti AT THE BIG APPLE

In conjunction with their flagship store opening at Fifth Avenue, Valentino partnered with Italian decorative arts company, Fornasetti, to spark the senses. The evening of 11 December 2014 saw a mesmerising collaboration take place at the Marcel Breuer Building in New York City. Valentino’s Sala Bianca 945 was not just a runway extravaganza in celebration of the fashion label’s newly opened flagship store – but also a momentous tribute to exquisite Italian craftsmanship, in terms of both haute couture and art. THE FIVE SENSES: AN EXHIBITION Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, the formidable duo behind Valentino’s designs, joined forces with Barnaba Fornasetti, son of the late 20th century painter Piero Fornasetti (1913 – 1988), to

showcase an interactive five-room installation at the event. Entitled The Five Senses, this unique exhibition is an experiential exchange between two of the most prominent Italian brands of fashion and design. Each space was filled with elements to illustrate one of the five senses: while the ‘touch’ room featured dangling Fornasetti hands that invited guests to weave their way through, the ‘taste’ room was filled with over 90 Fornasetti plates and two oversized murals, all overlooking a table with a pile of candy for eating.

THE BREUER BUILDING The 85,000 square-foot Marcel Breuer building on Madison Avenue created new dimensions within the nature of this spectacular production between Valentino and Fornasetti.

This one-night spectacle places emphasis on the idea that no form can be experienced or enjoyed without the employment of all five senses, the elements that activate memory. Both design houses view these as an essential component to their transformation and development, and their juxtaposition creates the opportunity to understand the close connection between Italian creativity and sophisticated craftsmanship. LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION OF OBJECTS Combining Fornasetti’s signature pen-and-ink surrealism with Valentino’s trademark camouflage prints with a touch of crimson, a special six-piece collection of limited edition items made its debut appearance at The Five Senses. These concurrently became available to the public exclusively at Valentino’s Fifth Avenue store on the same day of the exhibition. An eyeglass case, silk scarf and tray frame the gaze and lips of the world-renowned Italian actress and opera singer, Lina Cavalieri, whose face has graced Piero Fornasetti’s designs in more than 11,000 items in over 500 variations. The rest of the objects comprise a lacquered wooden stool with an ear, and a rectangular tray and plate with a male side-profile and hands respectively. Inspired by the concept of ‘parallel vision’ – the ability of the brain to simultaneously process incoming stimuli of differing quality – these whimsical creations have been designed to correspond to the five senses as well. Each feature Piccioli and Chiuri’s camouflage design synonymous with the Valentino brand, and illustrations of body parts in Piero Fornasetti’s striking neoclassical style.

Currently vacant, the Breuer building is closed to the public but available for commission, and previously served as the third home of the Whitney Museum of American Art. The space is set to be taken over by the Metropolitan Museum of Art with its first show, Unfinished, which will mark the reopening of the building in March 2016. Serving as a ‘container’ or ‘packaging’ for the collaboration, the unique architecture designed by the famed Marcel Breuer challenged and enhanced the experience of exhibition-goers. With its changing scale and its exterior’s upside-down windows, the venue transformed the Valentino and Fornasetti project into a temporary time capsule where both brands looked backwards and forwards at the same time, and with a diminished intensity both ways. + www.valentino.com / www.fornasetti.com
