“It is not from weakness that one commands respect.” - 1971 (Roger Kwan)

In their own special tribute to Mr Lee Kuan Yew, members of the Exoticars Club pick their favourite quote from The Man.

“If I am sure that if I belong to a pack that’s got a big dog, I would consider a nip. If we are all small dogs, it may be wiser just to bark.” - 1995

(Fed Wu)
“As along as the leaders take care of the people, they will obey the leaders.” - 1994 (Chris Teo)
“The weakness of democracy is that the assumption that all men are equal and capable of equal contribution to the common good is flawed.” - 1992 (Adrian Lee)

“I always tried to be correct, not politically correct.” - 2000

Lee Kuan Yew
1 9 2 3 — 2 0 1 5 There is so much to learn from Mr Lee Kuan Yew that historians and academics will have a field day writing about him in the next few decades. In our tribute to Mr Lee, we would just touch on two topics – complacency; and saying “No”. ON COMPLACENCY
ON SAYING “NO”
“What I fear is complacency. When things always become better, people tend to want more for less work.” (27 June 1970)
“You lose nothing by being polite. The answer is ‘No’, but please say it politely and give the reasons… Explain to me why ‘No’. Don’t change ‘No’ to ‘Yes’. Don’t be a fool. If there was a good reason why it is ‘No’, it must remain ‘No’, but the man must be told politely.” (30 September 1965)
Singapore has enjoyed an unprecedented success despite having been carved out from swampland in the years following the end of the Japanese Occupation. The road up to now had not only been not without challenge but at times even subjected to deliberate obstruction by dissenting forces. And yet our younger generation’s continuous observance of our accomplishments can only lead to smugness and complacency. In this sense, the country’s lesson draws strong parallels with the need for good leadership in business. This indulgence in self-praise is often little more than self-consolation when things do not turn out as planned. Very often this develops into a situation where the desire to build something better is relegated in favour of the desire to enjoy the here and the now. Being resolute in his persistence and his passion for achievement was something Mr Lee had endeavoured to embody right up to his final days. While his physical being eventually succumbed to the forces of nature, his spirit remained strong to the last. Therein lie an example for us to emulate, with far-reaching relevance in all areas of our lives and especially applicable to mature industries and economies which are in danger of stagnation. This is the inspiration which drives Anika’s desire to persistently push for betterment of quality — quality of product and quality of service.
The messenger of bad news often gets shot. Part of having maturity of thought is the acknowledgement that one may not achieve an ideal outcome all the time. Such ideals exist for the fantasies of theorists who have the luxury of debating what greatness might be achieved “if only....”. And yet the greatest victories are often those that have been snatched from the jaws of near tragedies; one in which the optimal outcome is achieved “in spite of....”. It is immensely difficult in our culture to resist indulging decision-makers who are flawed in their approach; flawed to the extent of being detrimental to themselves and to those for whom they are responsible. Yet there is always a strong temptation to relent, to acquiesce, and to accommodate the decision-maker...with a smile, albeit a sheepish one. How much more progressive our society would be, if the courage to speak with clarity and truthfulness was more characteristic of the average individual or organization. For it is so much easier to be a “Yes-man”, than to say “No” and having to justify it. Saying “No” is not something Anika shies away from. Standing up for what is right is important to Anika. May Mr Lee’s legacy live on in the strength of our convictions executed with the grace of our actions.
This is a tribute to Mr Lee Kuan Yew from

In Respect & Remembrance
a Singaporean; my forefathers arrived here in the early days, back in the 1880s. Through the years, my family’s fortunes have ebbed and flowed, just like the tides of our shores. I am a true son of the soil. My past, present and future lies here. My own destiny also rises and falls, sometimes just meandering but that is my fate and, most of the time, my own doing. I come from a generation in which life was characterised by many fears and uncertainties: just getting an education was a strain in my parents’ limited resources, and there were the dark clouds of Confrontation, the British withdrawal and racial riots hovering over us. Life was not a bed of roses but I was too young to comprehend the sacrifices my parents were making for me. It was only years later that I could understand why my mother stayed up all night when I had a fever, or why my late father went out to work every day when the sun was high or the rain was hard. Even when he was extremely ill, the tears in his eyes were not so much the result of his pain but because we were young and vulnerable then. Correspondingly, I am certain the leaders of Singapore went through the same trials and tribulations during the formative years of our young nation. Today, I am extremely grateful to our leaders, past and present, and especially to the father and architect of modern Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Through hi far-sighted visions for the country, he has brought about a stable and thriving environment for us to live and work in, one in which I am able to care for my parents in the way that I hope to. At the same time, I am able to give my children what my parents had to strive so hard for in the past. Younger Singaporeans born from the 1980s onwards may not appreciate our vulnerability up to the 1970s when we struggled to keep unfriendly neighbours at bay. Born in peace, stability, and racial harmony, many of our young wonder what all the fuss over Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s achievements was about. If not for Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s no-nonsense way of handling our neighbours, English would not be our first language today. Instead of demanding for freedom of speech to mock our leaders, we would be busy looking for ways to put food on our table to feed our family. With the passing of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew on 23 March 2015, I wish our leaders strength and foresight to continue to achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for our nation.

REFLECTIONS
by *Chia Boon Teck
HONOURING LKY Since the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew (“LKY”) on 23 March 2015, Singaporeans from all walks of life have been proposing a plethora of ways to honour him, including featuring him on our currency, renaming Changi Airport after him, turning his house into a museum, etc. We know by now that LKY disliked being idolized or immortalized through objects, statues and monuments. However, what we witnessed in the national week of mourning and the magnitude of Singaporeans’ reaction to his passing was unprecedented and dare I say, will not be bestowed on any other. LKY was so blasé about his contributions to Singapore and Singaporeans that many of his selfless deeds went unknown to most Singaporeans except for his family and colleagues. Most Singaporeans were unaware of and fascinated by his family’s anecdotal revelations about him as a husband, father, brother, and grandfather; by his colleagues’ recollections of his demands for perfection and how he toiled past 3am when he was PM, and past 2am when he was SM and MM; by tributes from world leaders on how he had helped them to run their countries and made the world a better place. How many conflicts between nations had LKY helped to prevent as an advisor and mediator we will never know. In all my fifty years, I have never seen the side of Singaporeans that I witnessed in the national week of mourning - kind, patient, generous, courteous, united - under the blistering sun throughout the week of national mourning, and the torrential storm during the funeral procession. Those who queued for hours to pay their last respects or lined the route of the funeral procession felt so united that if the well-being of Singapore was threatened at that moment, I believe everyone would have taken up arms to protect what LKY had built and achieved for Singaporeans. Amongst other things, LKY wants Singaporeans to be united. The many suggestions as to how we should honour him are not from pockets of supporters but cut across the nation. If objects, statues and monuments in honour of LKY could serve to unite Singaporeans, I believe he would graciously acquiesce to the “fuss” over him with a “so be it” attitude. Singapore has progressed at the expense of losing its charm. We pulled down many historical monuments including the National Theatre where our earlier National Day Rallies were held, the National Library where many Singaporeans hold fond memories of their younger days, the National Stadium where the Kallang Roar was born, the Supreme Court with its iconic green dome roof where many laws of the land were made, etc. But I would argue that the mother of all monuments is LKY’s Oxley Road house which stands largely unchanged in the past 50 years. Many of us are torn between wanting to respect LKY’s wish to demolish it, and wanting it preserved as a national monument. LKY’s Oxley Road house is where many historic events took place during the formative years of Singapore. That LKY spent 50 years developing Singapore from third world to first, while living in a home where time stood still material comforts-wise, leaves many a materialistic Singaporean feeling a little ashamed that a man as great as LKY could live his entire life so simply and frugally. If LKY’s family could come to an agreement with the government on how to preserve his house whilst ensuring that his concerns about privacy be respected, and that his family is equitably compensated for the property, then perhaps a piece of Singapore’s history could be saved from the wrecking ball. *The writer is a lawyer involved in various voluntary and social organizations.

A NEW ERA
Franck Muller has created a new sensation with its latest avant-garde model — the Vanguard Carbon, its first timepiece featuring a case made from carbon that matches harmonious design with pioneering technology.
37
Founded in 1992, FRANCK MULLER® has built a reputation as a watchmaker known for its bold styling and avant-garde designs. Celebrated for its “World Premiers” which unveil new and exclusive timepieces that remain unrivalled in the world of watches, the watch manufacturer continues to dazzle the world with creations that represent major technical advances in the history of haute horlogerie. It has to date more than 50 world premieres and patents, showcasing its innovations and marvels of technical complexity. THE VANGUARD COLLECTION Individuality, harmonious contours, flawless finesse and impeccably balanced proportions — these have been worked to combine elegance with sporty characteristics of Franck Muller’s latest sensation. The Vanguard exemplifies the avant-garde attitude of Franck Muller – it made its numerals using appliqué relief numerals and raised hands against an intense dial that sets a new trend in design for watches. The Vanguard Collection has made itself distinguished by offering a dynamic masculine look and unparalleled style with its clean and futuristic aesthetics. Sporting its classic Curvex case, the Vanguard Collection made news for its most striking feature – using appliqué relief numbers and raised hands that instantly grab attention. These are carefully handpolished and brushed, perfectly complementing the steel dial and robust winding crown. The Vanguard comes with a case that is available in both mattecoating and polished finishing, with an integrated strap that has crocodile grain on the obverse and rubber lining as inlay. Fitted with an automatic movement, Vanguard collection has a Chronograph Non-Chronograph version.

THE VANGUARD CARBON Franck Muller’s latest creation, the Vanguard Carbon is its first timepiece which features a case made from carbon. Dedicated specially to men, the timepiece has been described as a perfect match between harmonious design and pioneering technology. Widely used in aviation, military and aeronautic, carbon is extremely strong and light, enabling the shaping of the Vanguard timepiece into a new contemporary style. Using a delicate machining process, the whole case including the tapping is crafted out of a mass of carbon and enables the unfurling of a modern and futuristic characteristic. This innovative model is embellished with yellow details which renew the elegant and harmonious vision of its creator. Powered by an automatic movement, the Vanguard Carbon has a power reserve of 42 hours and is fitted on a strap in cordura onto black rubber with colored stitches.

THE VANGUARD LADY A new feminine interpretation, the Vanguard Lady features stunning details as well as elegant and sensual characteristics. Drawing its inspiration from the perfect Cintrée Curvex curves, the Vanguard Lady is emphasized by its glamour – which is highlighted by the sunstamped dial adorned with the pink and white appliqué relief numbers. The distinct and feminine numbers perfectly complement the sporty and bold design of the case. The Vanguard Lady is fitted with the iconic rubber and leather strap with feminine pink color stitches, complete with the pink winding crown as the finishing touch. THE VANGUARD GRAVITY A true symbol of technological avant-garde with a sporty approach, while evoking the remarkable power of the time piece, the new Vanguard Gravity features an open face dial which showcases a new concept of tourbillon cage. This is demonstrated by its innovative elliptical shape and structure in aluminium. Instead of the traditional bridge and pillars of a tourbillion, it has an ellipse circle with diameters of 21.2mm and 7.7mm. Occupying the entire lower side of the dial, the impressive elliptical tourbillon cage, counters all effects of gravity, by making a full rotation every 60 seconds. This remarkable mechanism is emphasized by blue sapphire crystal screens on both sides of the watch. The rubber on the inside of the strap takes the form of a bold wrist. The strap comes in a variety of finishes including fabric and croco and creates absolute harmony with the iconic Cintrée Curvex case. Wholly in-house designed and manufactured, the Vanguard Gravity is powered by a manual-winding mechanical movement with a power reserve of five days. It is available in titanium and 18-carat pink or white gold plated and offers a personalised choice of 6 colorful variants for the bridge.
Housing a quartz movement, the Vanguard Lady is available in stainless steel and pink gold. This new collection is at once sporty in terms of its impressive shape and yet very feminine through the elegance of its style.

are designed not only to maximize the stones’ firepower but also to enhance elegance and charm. Available in this collection are stunning pieces which include the earrings of radiant diamond tiers and bracelets in open weaves and medallions as fine as lace; tassel pendants shimmering with diamonds and seed pearls; and rings of rhythmic contours accented with sapphires.
Handcrafted in a tradition of excellence and with a style that is legendary, Tiffany’s latest masterpieces feature spectacular creations which are set to dazzle even the most discerning collectors. Many of the pieces showcase Tiffany’s masterful craftsmanship and ingenious use of coloured gemstones to create the most intricate nature inspired pieces. They
Tiffany reinforced its reputation for rare coloured diamonds in this collection with a treasure trove of gems in saturated hues from yellow and purplish pink to bluish green. Example includes an exceedingly Fancy Deep Brownish Greenish Yellow diamond of 8.16 carats set with white opal and colored diamonds in 18 karat rose gold. Also unveiled in its Masterpieces collection are its selection of Yellow Diamonds which are among the world’s finest and most sought-after diamonds distinguished by a colour that is as pure as sunlight. Highlights include a diamond daisy platinum necklace with a medallion of pearls and diamonds featuring a cushion-cut 3.60 carat Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond as the center stone. Stunning creations include Art Deco-style necklace and bracelet of green chrysoprase, black spinel and diamonds anchored with a curvaceous buckle; and a tassel of turquoise beads with a sparkling diamond cap and diamond ribbons a wide bangle of black lacquer and 18 karat white gold. This collection also marks the debut of a number of modern Tiffany Masterpieces created by design director Francesca Amfitheatrof who uses a vivid color palette that unveils innovation and versatility.
41
Inspired by archival jewels of diamonds set in square bezels, several pieces feature the linearity and fluidity of 1920s design. Using a mixture of custom cut princess, baguette and round brilliant diamonds, Amfitheatrof has created a selection of necklaces and bracelets, each designed with discreet details. Aficionados will appreciate how the diamonds are arranged to allow movement or how the elements are linked, so subtly that only the wearer knows about them. The jewellery pieces use varied lengths which are layered beautifully to build volume and generate a dazzling light.
Page 39 Tiffany has unveiled its Masterpieces collection including a selection of Yellow Diamonds which are among the world’s finest and most soughtafter diamonds.
Page 40 & 41 Diamond daisy platinum necklace with a medallion of pearls and diamonds features a cushion-cut 3.60 carat Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond as the center stone.
In others, some diamond and platinum jewels drape like silk scarves and delicate folds of satin. For example, a necklace of fluid lines and sensuous motion showcases the beauty and glamour of Tiffany diamonds. Using a 20.01-carat internally flawless diamond as a centre piece, it is set in platinum and framed by round, cushion-cut and marquise diamond ribbons. An intricate platinum setting rests sensuously against the body, resulting in a stunning creation that upholds Tiffany’s legacy as the world’s preeminent diamond jeweler. Amfitheatrof’s versatility is evident in several pieces. For example, she uses black spinel and diamond baguettes which create sophisticated linear patterns, and jewels of hand-carved white agate contrast cool with the warmth of 18 karat gold. A talking piece of her creation is in using gemstones including citrine and turquoise which are set in reversible necklaces of sculptural and geometric gold links that are bold and well articulated. +

The Making of Iconic Landmarks
Veteran hotelier DR. RICHARD HELFER, who is chairman of One Farrer Pte Ltd, shares some insights on what makes great hotels. Dr Richard Helfer is no stranger to the hospitality and tourism sector. A veteran of more than 35 years in the industry, the chairman of One Farrer Pte Ltd has accomplished much during those years, including being credited for the success of creating the Raffles International group of hotels & resorts. While he was at the helm, Raffles became a global luxury brand and international hotel/resort management company, he was instrumental in growing the hotel company from a 103-suite hotel in Singapore to thirtysix hotels/resorts, with over 12,000 rooms, in thirty-one destinations. Dr Helfer, who spends at least 100 nights a year in hotels and resorts, thrives on solving problems and loves every minute of his work. “Every day is a new learning experience. I feel most fortunate that I have the opportunity to be involved in activities that I would more often choose to do, even if not directly part of my profession. My 14
years as the founding chairman and CEO of the Raffles International Hotel Group, including restoration of Raffles Hotel and launching the Raffles brand, was a most unique experience as it enabled me to conceptualise and build, along with a team of really wonderful hotel professionals, an international hotel branding upon a historic foundation, while setting standards going forward that were aimed at and reflected the best of the present and future of the industry.”
He says, “Each time I stay at a hotel or resort, I try to bring back one positive new idea to incorporate in the hotels we are currently conceptualizing or rethinking for existing properties. Adding these new thoughts along with our endeavors to limit and or modify many of the troublesome lack of services, products and faculties experienced by frequent travelers, assists us in building a hotel that meets and often exceeds the expectations of our residents and patrons.”
43
To successfully manage an iconic hotel, Dr Helfer cites some important factors: “Attention to detail in both product and service. Make sure that you yourself are constantly interacting with end-users and those who provide its services (your employees). Always be on the lookout for that new positive service/devise/facility that can be offered to your hotel residents or patrons, something that they will appreciate enough to tell others about and come back themselves to your hotel, on a regular basis. In the case of an iconic hotel one must first understand why over time people have christened the hotel iconic and make sure that during a restoration or make over, that the iconic nature is not lost.” Today he has a new baby in Singapore, One Farrer Hotel & Spa located in the middle of a rich heritage and cultural enclave of the Farrer Park area, which is set to put the island republic on the world map with its intuitive approach towards lifestyle and hospitality. It charms its guests with 14 gardens over 20 levels. In a bold move, it has also commissioned and acquired an exquisite art collection featuring more than 700 pieces of original Greater Asia art by artists from Singapore and around the region, all part of creating a ‘total lifestyle environment’.
“The end-users, hotel in-house residents and patrons to the hotel’s facilities, have become more confident and forthright as to what services and overall product that they want to see in the hotel or resort they stay in. The advent of social media has also made it easier for end-users to express their preferences directly to the hotels and at the same time share these personal likes and dislikes with a wide internet based marketplace through blogs,” he says. To meet the challenges in the industry, One Farrer is designed to set a new benchmark in hospitality. “It is a completely different proposition as it is truly three hotels within one, featuring different room types and facilities which focus on the customer base of each individual hotel (focus age 35 to 45). The three hotels are then encompassed within a total lifestyle environment that integrates the whole to make it far greater than the sum of its parts,” he explains. “We have focused on creating a special product which resonates within both its location in Farrer Park, as well as creating a total environment that is inclusive of atmospheric attributes (gardens, water features, artwork and architecture) unique to its venue and Singapore,” he says.
At One Farrer, in-house residents have a choice between three distinct hotels as well as six different types of rooms, studios, suites and villas. It also impresses with a total of nine interactive food and beverage concepts. “Another part of this total environment is making the end-user feel unthreatened and completely at ease. In addition to safety and security features, this unique feeling of security and relaxation is furthered by not badgering the in-house resident at each turn with charges for mini bar, WIFI etc and or extra charges for things that one does not really want,” he explains. “A successful hotel is beyond its location, its décor or its amenities. It is a place where are you are cared for so well that you want to come back again and again.” + Opposite page Dr Richard Helfer, chairman of One Farrer Pte Ltd, has focused on creating a special product which resonates within both its location in Farrer Park, as well as creating a total environment that is inclusive of atmospheric attributes (gardens, water features, artwork and architecture) unique to its venue and Singapore.

Couture Bling Swarovski partnered with London’s Victoria & Albert Museum to launch the Alexander McQueen fashion retrospective Savage Beauty.
It was a meeting of opposites when the late English designer Lee Alexander McQueen first crossed paths with Austrian crystal house Swarovski. With one revelling in the macabre and the other the refined, a collaboration between the two industry big wigs may seemed odd to many. But for over 15 years, Swarovski has played a crucial role in creating some of the late designer’s most iconic runway moments. In her official statement released to the press, Nadja Swarovski, member of the Swarovski Executive Board, says: “Working with McQueen revealed the magic that comes from putting our crystal into the hands of cuttingedge talent. He explored creative boundaries and pushed the limits of craftsmanship, developing innovative, new applications for our products, and putting them back on the map for other designers.” And this long-time collaboration has been put on display at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum for the Alexander McQueen fashion retrospective. Called Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, the landmark exhibition, the first major retrospective of the late designer’s work to be presented in Europe, tells the sartorial tale of a visionary designer who changed the face of fashion. collaboration with Swarovski. They include a crystal mesh hooded top from the label’s spring/summer 1999 collection, and Bird’s Nest Headdress, which was created in collaboration with Philip Treacy and Shaun Leane for his autumn/winter 2006 Widows of Culloden runway show. “We were privileged to collaborate creatively with McQueen since 1998 in both fashion and design,” reveals Swarovski. “And Savage Beauty is an eloquent tribute to the scale of his talent and to his limitless imagination, which conjured looks that were sometimes wild and challenging, but always exquisitely crafted, and always beautiful.” The relationship between McQueen and Nadja Swarovski also served as a blueprint for Swarovski’s future fashion collaborations, and led to the establishment of the Swarovski Collective. The international programme has gone on to support over 150 emerging designers in producing some of their most avant-garde fashion looks of the past 15 years. + The Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty fashion retrospective is on show at the Victoria 7 Albert Museum in London till 19 July 2015. TIPPLE TIME Last April, a new wine and whisky bar opened its doors on the first floor of The Big Hotel. Called Tipple Wine and Whisky bar, it is nestled in the heart of the city and serves carefully curated libations that will suit any mood. The grand opening, which saw good friends and business associates come together to relax and mingle, was made interesting with the unplugged sounds of live singing performances. Served at the event were some of the best concoctions made by the bar. They include fine wines and champagne from France, New Zealand and Italy, as well as Japanese and Scotch whisky such as Hibiki, Yamazaki and Macallan. The night was filled with the sounds of laughter and chatter as the guests enjoyed themselves while having more than a few different types of tipple. +

A NOTE FROM
THE PUBLISHER
It is with a heavy heart that we are publishing this edition in tribute to Mr Lee Kuan Yew (“LKY”) who passed away on 23 March 2015. Many of our readers were born in the 1950s and 1960s and who witnessed LKY transformed Singapore from a kampong to one of the most affluent countries in the world in just one generation. Many young Singaporeans take Singapore’s economic miracle for granted, forgetting that Singapore has no natural resources. Much of Singapore’s success in the last 50 years were attributable to the personal relationships that LKY fostered with the leaders of other countries which led to their investments in Singapore. One hopes that those relationships and goodwill have passed on to our current leaders as we count on them to take us through the next 50 years and beyond.

Straight Through The Heart McLaren lets fly a new arrow aimed at a bigger market share.
The first of McLaren’s Sport Series, this streamlined road warrior before us was evidently fashioned to do battle with the likes of the Ferrari California and the Audi R8. Launched at the New York Auto Show this past month, McLaren 570S Coupé’s inviting purr is a tenacious grunt unlike Ferrari’s. True to its patrimony, its rising doors reveal with a majestic anticipation that slows time down, revealing a cockpit that bears a much more futuristic aesthetic than those of classically leather-bound Ferraris and Porsches. Its edgy carbon-fibre dashboard is complemented by nothing less than hand-finished Alcantara Nappa leather, enshrining state-of-the-art controls meant for chewing up both road and track. Would you like to hear about its amazing surround sound system and satellite radio, or are you ready to rumble? Fire it up and you are now at the reins of a speed freak, whose athleticism makes you feel completely in control. The agility and responsiveness it brandishes
when negotiating tight corners are almost addictive, bolstered by front and rear anti-rollbars, independent adaptive dampers and dual wishbones. Although the McLaren 570S Coupé’s M838TE – a V8 twin-turbo 3.8-litre engine – is mostly adapted from the McLaren 650S, has been revealed by its British manufacturer to be 30 per cent new, which includes a new suspension that McLaren specially developed for what might be a pivotal offering in McLaren’s history. Named after its power of 570PS (562bhp), the McLaren 570S Coupé totes a fairly friendly price tag of about USD180,000, which is around the same asking price of its rival Porsche 911 Turbo S, but beats in the zero to hundred race by more than a second. Nicknamed by Top Gear the “Baby McLaren”, the rationale of the 570S’s ‘attainable luxury’ price is driven by McLaren’s new direction – McLaren looks to triple sales volume over the next few years. While

some might find McLaren’s relinquishment of its grand exclusivity for volume sales heartbreaking, McLaren’s legendary models like the McLaren P1 and 12C still enjoy that rarity and elitism, for the time being at least. A McLaren seven-speed Seamless Shift Gearbox transmission hurtles this gleaming blade through the wind from 0km/h to 100km/h in 3.2seconds. Cutting edge technology like aluminium rear fenders direct the airstream to its rear spoiler, while aero blades beneath the front bumper reduce drag, endowing this mid-engine rear-wheel drive sports car the capability of achieving a maximum speed of 328km/h. Nonetheless, feel no guilt when flooring the accelerator: the carbon emissions of the feisty 570S are an impressive 258g/km, while its fuel economy is a laudable 25.5mpg. Only a handful of these trailblazers will be retailed in South-East Asia, which leaves no time for deliberation. + McLaren Singapore 45 Leng Kee Road Singapore 159103 Tel: +65 6430 4888 www.singapore.mclaren.com

A World Of Details: Porcelain Around The World Lladr贸 celebrates the wonders of life with a new range of handcrafted sculptures that capture artistic brilliance.
41
Founded in 1953, Lladró which has its factory located in Tavernes Blanques in Valencia, Spain, has become an international brand known for beautifully sculptured porcelains. Every piece of its porcelain figurine boasts the hallmarks of superb craftsmanship, artistic brilliance and timelessness. The company takes pride in creating each and every piece of its works after a meticulous and laborious handmade process. Highlights from its latest launch are the Xian Warrior, African Motherhood and Lion Dance. XIAN WARRIOR Lladró’s Xian Warrior is inspired by the collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. The life-like sculptures were part the funerary art buried with the emperor in 210 - 209 BCE and were discovered in 1974 in Lintong District, Xi’an, Shaanxi province. The Xian warrior comes alive imposing his stature and authority. The original warriors found in Xian were made in polychrome terracota, and the piece recreates those original tones by treating the glazes which are applied in earthy tones to emulate terracota and the gold and red tones to symbolize nobility.
Opposite XIAN WARRIOR Size: L58 x W22 x H16cm
Lladró artists had a most challenging time to achieve the pictorial effect of the sword. Its rhomboids look like they had been painted but in fact, it is first varnished, then rubbed so that the varnish stays within the bas-reliefs of the rhomboids, and then the glaze is applied on top. It has the resulting effect of the glaze creating nuances after coming into contact with the varnish, a feat which was not possible if it had been painted homogenously. Another complex issue that artists had to work on was getting the precise alignment of the sword with the hand. This has not been easy as porcelain is known to shrink by about 15 per cent during the firing process porcelain because of the loss of water. It has been a feat for the artists in achieving the perfect distance and alignment between the hand and the handle in this warrior. AFRICAN MOTHERHOOD Also recently launched is the African Motherhood, a figurine that symbolizes the special relationship between humans and Mother Nature and with Africa as the cradle of civilization. This figurine is a highly expressive sculptural piece featuring a colorful representation of African life. Artisans show the full potential in the use of the glazes to present a very

dynamic and very realistic look in both modeling and palette. The artisans have successfully captured the faces of the mother and of the child which seem to have a life of their own. Rich coloring taken from African iconography and the use of white gres make a strong contrast with the red, the earthy hues and the decorations in gold and silver colours. LION DANCE The pair of creatures in this Lion Dance sculpture seems ready to start prancing. Inspired by the pugilistic performance that has a history dating back to more than 1,500 years in China, Lladró has captured the beauty of this tradition in a handcrafted sculpture that is limited to 500 pieces only. The Lion Dance, which features performers in lion’s costumes imitating the movement of a lion accompanied by loud drumming, is performed during auspicious occasions, including the unveiling of new buildings, offices and shops. It is believed that this performance brings good fortune and wealth. During Chinese New Year, the Lion Dance is also part and parcel of the festivities because it has long been a legend that the Lion Dance had the effect of frightening a bestial creature, the Nien, by villagers who banged on drums on the eve of Chinese New Year. Today the parading lions along the streets bring goodwill and luck to everyone they meet. + Lladró | 290 Orchard Road #04-45 Paragon Tel: +65 6738 3900 www.lladro.com.sg Right from top AFRICAN MOTHERHOOD Size: L38 x W20 x H20cm LION DANCE Size: L32 x W53 x H35cm Limited Edition 500 pieces

XZQT presents Bonaldo’s most acclaimed objects of desire.
Forward-thinking Italian design has been warmly welcomed worldwide because of its easily adaptability and unpretentious elegance. A major advantage of these contemporary objets d’art is their provenance – they are built by craftsmen whose skills have been passed down for generations. Make no mistake about frontrunner Bonaldo’s enthralling modernist unveilings, within their solid woods and manipulated shapes lie intelligent design and a wealth of experience, without which their visual and tactile gratification could not have been achieved.
FILLY Bonaldo embraces Italian minimalism with a collection, entitled Filly, which touts dress-down simplicity without compromising comfort. Bartoli Design imagined unassuming, sleek silhouettes in durable steel, and endowed the Filly chairs a desirable echelon of plush softness by first swathing their metal structures with shrink-resistant rubber, before sheathing the chairs in removable upholstery in specially selected fabric, eco-leather or leather. One also has the option of whether a Filly chair’s steel legs are fully upholstered or left in bare simplicity. The Filly chair’s variants include the Filly Up, which employs a higher back to improve comfort, while the Filly Large rests the torso with a wider back. Homeowners with a penchant for armrests might prefer the Miss Filly, while others who are more inclined to minimal stools might fancy the Filly Too. Available either in the fully upholstered version or with steel legs.
53
BIG TABLE Paying pleasing complement to the Filly chairs’ thoughtful simplicity is the Big Table, which design maven Alain Gilles produced for Bonaldo. Legs of laser-cut steel crisscross to support a solid table top in a fascinating physics equation. Available in a customisable combination of coral red, orange, green, lilac, powder pink, brown, dove-grey, amaranth, or completely in anthracite grey, white or Corten, the Big Table has been lauded in the industry of furniture design as a subtle and utilitarian conversation piece. Its sturdy surface can be fashioned in lacquered matt white, in canaletto walnut, in solid American walnut, in anthracite grey polished solid oak, in natural polished oak, in black acid-treated glass or white acid-treated extra light glass, in white or anthracite grey ceramic.
OCTA The winner of the vaunted Good Design Award, the Octa is as subtle yet striking as the Big Table. Also a creation of Bartoli Design, the Octa presents a curiously curated mesh of metal. Inspired by the Italian game of Mikado pick-up sticks, lithe sticks, bent and welded, hold up a hardy table top. Also available with a round top, in black acid-treated glass, white acid-treated extra-light glass or transparent glass, this sophisticated table may be crafted as a fixed or as an extendable structure. Its metal supports may either be painted white or matt anthracite grey, chromed or hewn from black nickel.

GAP Among the prodigious Alain Gilles’ recent works, his Gap table is one of his most memorable and celebrated endeavours. Previously highlighted by Affluent as one of Bonaldo’s most standout pieces, the Gap returns with a wider range of customisable options. Legs that widen at the top and taper at the end intrigue the eye, seeming transforming when admired from different angles. Possessing the excellent versatility of being able to lend a touch of sophistication to most styles of home or commercial space, the Gap can be made between 200cm to 300cm long, while its metal legs can be lacquered brown, anthracite grey, white, green and red, or the new corten (weathered) steel finish. Its table top can be requested in anthracite grey or white matt lacquer, but looks best in Canaletto walnut, solid American walnut, oak, acid treated glass or finely frosted glass. +

A Vacant Affair Designer label Toncelli blows us away with its light-hearted but nonetheless utilitarian collection simply entitled Wind. Acclaimed interior designer Toncelli sought lightness with its latest endeavour. The pilgrimage towards lithe form, both visually and contextually, as well as an unassuming presence birthed a collection that it named Wind. Shrugging rich materials and ostentatious designs, models like the Tea column conscientiously tuck cutlery and crockery away, only revealing them at an owner’s behest, cascading forth in a visually pleasing format, and even providing a hidden extension upon which the art of preparing tea may be gracefully executed and served. Besides the Tea column’s handmade oriental kit and contemporary design accessories, this pull-out table brandishes a drawer as well as a tray for collecting liquids, two lateral pull-out elements and a hidden compartment in the back with a sliding opening. Unpretentious cabinetry that teems with ideas under its charmingly striped woods and pristine facades, the Tea column has been designed to adapt to stowing away jewellery, accessories, clothing or cosmetics too.
56
AFFLUENT living
Fashioned from rare woods, the Wind collection’s Plinto table is a prime example of Toncelli’s trademark style of applying age-old Italian craftsmanship and knowhow to modernist designs and revolutionary ideas. The striking Plinto table paves the way for stylish and reliable Italian design to manifest in contemporary forms. The sturdy table chose to embellish two robust concrete bases with a contrasting wooden top. The theme of the lightness of wind resurfaces in the Plinto table, nuanced by the wooden frame that connects the cabinetry to the island. The hovering bridge is a subtle conversation piece, but is nonetheless practical and durable for a multitude of uses.

A foray meant to convey modesty, yet astound with sophisticated details, Wind is best epitomised by its pieces crafted from Eta Blanc concrete. Stripped down, hardy seats that are themselves gentle statements, make way for one to take in the rich details peppered across the elegant kitchen ensemble. Concrete surfaces are in turn furnished by the mesmerising finishes of Ziricote wood. Capacious storage units open up to reveal completely immaculate spaces. In the spirit of Italian craftsmanship, Toncelli has not compromised on materials nor has it lacked thought in designing these opulent creations of easy-going elegance. All
this while, not an inch of the Wind collection exudes a frontal implication of extravagance. As the brand puts it and we agree: “Wind perfectly reflects the discreet Toncelli style. SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE
Smart innovations of De Dietrich and the sophistication that they endow the modern home with. By keeping keen tabs on state-of-the-art technology, luxury label De Dietrich continually drives the advancement of the bespoke kitchen. Comfort and ease of usage are the smart appliance purveyor’s priorities, around which the DOP1597GX pyrolytic oven was designed. This patented Tactilium full-colour touch sliding menu control panel oven prides itself on a reliable rotisserie with shelf support. Besides its adjustable telescopic railing and two flat safety anti-tip shelves, this discerning luxury appliance adapts to various forms of food by employing two 45mm deep drip tray with grid as well as a patented Lissium baking tray. Engineered with immense durability, the patented Low Temperature cooking mode oven’s array of dynamic functions are user-oriented and easily operated via the simple push of buttons.
The highlight feature of this meticulously engineered device is an innovative system developed to prevent slamming of its oven doors, thereby greatly reducing wear and tear. The DOP1597GX’s silent system known as Soft Close, employs two chambers of lubricants and creative hinges. An innovation inspired by the noise minimisation technology of modern cabinets, the first chamber gradually pushes the lubricant to the second chamber when the DOP1597GX oven’s door has swung shut. This mechanism located on the left side of the oven door cavity activates within the last one centimeter of door movement, only slightly slowing down the DOP1597GX’s swift closing process in order to guarantee a perfectly silent close. Bolstered by the patented intelligent cooking system (ICS), the DOP1597GX is also very adept with lowtemperature cooking. Cleaning is a breeze with the oven’s “Pyroclean” function, which carbonises dirt

and grime within a device, so that these unwanted remnants can be swept away easily afterward, while its “Eolyse” technology greatly reduces the fumes and odours of cooking. Designed to complement both the charming aesthetics as well as the forward-thinking mechanics of the DOP1597GX pyrolytic oven, the DTIM1000C is a stove that can multitask between the needs of five dishes at one time. Brandishing De Dietrich’s vaunted HoriZone Piano as well as a state-of-the-art tactilium screen, this high-tech stove can be adjusted to apply a single cooking zone, where singular heat is applied across the hob despite the various cooking zones, or piano mode, where its smart surface compartmentalises three different cooking zones each with their independent adjustable temperature settings. The full capabilities of this HoriZone Piano smart hob are showcased when it is set to its expert function, which allows five pots or pans to be tended to by separate sensing cooking spots with independently adjustable settings across the hob. Best summarised by innovator De Dietrich as a “full zoneless cooking area”, the revolutionary DTIM1000C’s automatic “power tracker” sensors follows pots surfaces as they are moved, and offer 15 levels of power per zone, across a 930mm by 520mm surface. A capacitive TFT tactillium touch screen that controls individual timers effortlessly makes cooking all the more enjoyable. Protected by 10 safety features, this intricately beveled and chromed device has a dedicated locking touch with cleaning function, rendering it one of modern cooking’s greatest secret ingredients, besides standing out as one good-looking complement to interior aesthetics. + De Dietrich Oxley Bizhub, #02-70 65 Ubi Road One Singapore 408729 Tel +65 6508 4600 IMAGES COURTESY OF DE DIETRICH | WRITTEN BY ANDRE FROIS

DIVINE STROKES Contemporary painter and designer, Sanzi, is a welltravelled individual who is versed in the fields of both Eastern and Western art. Still, he stays true to his traditional mainland Chinese roots with his art, which is heavily influenced by ancient Taoist philosophies.
in Yangzhou, China, he graduated from the Fine Arts Institute of Hunan Normal University in Changsha at the age of 18, where he studied Chinese ink painting & calligraphy, along with European oil painting. THE EARLY YEARS As Wang Xiaolong, he cut his teeth running in a self-titled studio in Dafen (a suburb north-west of Shenzhen, China), eventually earning himself recognition among private European collectors who formed a deep appreciation for his unconventional approach to art. He then went on to experiment with breakthrough figurative and conceptual works the late 1990s to the early 2000s, during which he frequently employed pale or neutral colours in his paintings. It was also during this period that Taoism became an ever more central focus in his art. FROM WANG XIAOLONG TO SANZI Highly inspired by the teachings of Laozi, the founder of Taoist philosophy, the artist eventually decided to adopt the moniker Sanzi in 2008, and rose to even greater fame while introducing more intense colours into his trademark style. Sanzi’s studio began to participate in an increasing number of exhibitions and art fairs in Asia, resulting in greater attention from businessmen, banks and property developers from around the region, especially in Shanghai.
Few artists in this day and age would be able to achieve what Sanzi has accomplished in their lifetimes. The contemporary Chinese painter and designer is one of the biggest names in the global art industry today, and is revered by international media and well-known collectors alike – being only second to first-tier Chinese artists such as Yue Minjun and Zhang Xiaogang. Born as Wang Xiaolong in 1965
Since then, Sanzi has held numerous solo exhibitions around the world in cities such as Miami (2011) and New York (2012) in the United States; Taipei (Art Revolution 2013 – 2015); Malaysia (Art Expo 2013 and 2014); as well as Singapore (Art Stage 2015). In 2011, he was visited for the first time by renowned London auction house, Bonhams. His works have been collected by museums in Shenzhen and Shanghai, as

well as by private collectors across the globe, including high profile and high net worth figures like Bernard L. Schwartz, former CEO of Loral Space and Communications in the United States, as well as billionaire Tan Sri Dato Danny Tan, founder of Malaysia’s Tropicana Corporation Berhad (formerly known as Dijaya Corporation). DEVOTION TO TAOISM AND NATURE In the words of Sanzi himself, “Before 40, we believe in Confucianism; after that, it would be Taoism.” His uplifting and enlightening artworks are often titled after Taoist sayings and idioms, which are reflective of the artist’s belief that everything, be it in heaven or on Earth, is best in its natural form, as each life is governed by the laws of nature. His artistic style is said to be of a “divine level” as it invokes inspiration and create dialogue within the observer. Sanzi is also a firm advocate of cherishing the process and meaning of life as people transition from phase to phase in the various stages of their lives. He is the only mainland Chinese artist to be represented by Taglialatella Galleries in New York, where his works are displayed alongside that of
iconic figures in the art world, namely Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Andrew Wyeth, just to name a few. More recently, Sanzi’s artworks have been introduced to Art WeMe Contemporary Gallery – a specialist in Asian contemporary art housed in the Publika Shopping Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. +
