SAPPHIRE BRILLIANCE Richard Mille uses sapphire to create new timepieces that are transparent and almost weightless.

Richard Mille has launched two new limited tourbillon calibres that boast ground breaking techniques in the world of making watches using cutting edge technology and materials that pay tribute to watch collectors around the world. TOURBILLON RM 56-02 SAPPHIRE Following Richard Mille’s introduction of the RM 056 Sapphire Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph three years ago, it launched the RM 56-01. The RM 056 was a technical achievement in watchmaking as it was the first time a complex case design for the intricate movement has been manufactured in pure sapphire. In RM 56-01, the baseplate, bridges and third wheel were also created from sapphire. In RM 56-01, the baseplate, bridges and third wheel were also created from sapphire. Made by subjecting aluminum oxide crystals to high pressure and temperature environments, sapphire is transparent and has a hardness of 1800 Vickers (9 Moh’s) making it virtually scratch resistant to materials other than diamond.

The RM 56-02 Sapphire Tourbillon, the latest addition to the Richard Mille family of sapphire timepieces, features a new movement which takes cues from the mechanical architecture of the RM 27-01 Rafael Nadal and its cable suspended movement within the clear sapphire. To optimize its weightlessness and transparency, the baseplate of the RM 56-02, made from grade 5 titanium, is entirely suspended within the sapphire watchcase by specially developed single braided cable of only 0.35mm thickness. This is woven within a system of 4 pulleys on posts at the movement’s corners and another 6 pulleys placed along the movement’s periphery. This entire cable unit is attached to a separate indicator located below 12 o’clock allowing an easy visual inspection of the cable tension. Richard Mille’s engineers have added a new design of winding barrel bridge, tourbillon and center bridges in sapphire to the movement parts. The tripartite case of the RM 56-02 is milled and ground from blocks of solid sapphire by highly specialized experts

Stettler in Lyss, Switzerland. It takes 40 days, 24/7 of continuous machining to produce one case followed by 400 hours of machining and finishing for the different movement bridges. This technical feat is a crowning achievement of the sapphire family of timepieces within the Richard Mille collection. The case of the RM 56-02, is given antiglare protection on both front and back bezels, and is waterproof to 30 meters. It comes with a partially translucent strap created from Aerospace Nano® by Biwi SA, exclusively for Richard Mille. The RM 56-02 is limited to 10 pieces worldwide.

TOURBILLON RM 57-01 PHOENIX AND DRAGON — JACKIE CHAN Richard Mille has launched a new jewellery creation in the form of a new tourbillon, the RM 57-01 Phoenix and Dragon-Jackie Chan. It is inspired by the two mythical creatures, the Phoenix and Dragon. Considered two of the ‘Four Supernatural Spirits’; it is believed that seeing a Phoenix and Dragon together is symbolic for great fortuitousness and luck. The phoenix, a supernatural bird, was commonly referred to as the ‘King of Birds’. The bird embodies the five virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity as well as being symbolic for the Empress. It is believed that this bird has never cause harm to either a single insect nor blade of grass, eating and drinking nothing but bamboo seeds and sweet spring water.

the realism of these special animals. Most interestingly, the unseen parts of these two marvelous entities have also been added. The movement has a baseplate of PVD treated titanium, double winding barrels and a power reserve of 48 hours, indicated by a red line between 10 and 11 o’clock. The movement is given extra protection by a torquelimiting crown to protect the watch from possible overwinding. The RM 57-01 Phoenix and Dragon is limited to 15 pieces in 18K white or red gold. + For more information, visit Richard Mille Singapore Pte Ltd 391A Orchard Road #11-08, Ngee Ann City Tower A, Singapore 238873 www.richardmille.com

The dragon which has always appeared in a magical variety of forms is presented either long or short bodied, small or gigantic in size. It inhabited all areas of the universe from the heights above to the depths below and was able to travel between the skies and earth. These legendary figures are created from 3N rose gold. They inhabit the interior of the movement and are carved and incised entirely by hand, using special miniature tools which are needed to be made for the specific artistry required. MIKIMOTO unveils

its commitment to superior craftsmanship and unmatched creativity while adding a sophisticated charm to Hello Kitty’s appeal in its latest jewellery collection.

The design team at MIKIMOTO has integrated elements of Hello Kitty into MIKIMOTO’s jewellery, giving emphasis on the elegance of the brand, and at the same time, adding a charming touch to it. There are 10 sophisticated designs, including earrings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets in this selection which tastefully encapsulates an enduring allure that transcends time using colourful enamels and diamonds to represent Hello Kitty’s iconic ribbon, complemented with round delicate pearls. Several eye-catching pieces in this collection will delight Hello Kitty fans. These include a layered pearl necklace with Hello Kitty’s face traced in diamonds, rubies and onyx pearls, a choker with Hello Kitty’s ribbon encrusted with stunning diamonds, hair accessory that has Hello Kitty’s face embellished with Akoya pearls as well as a bracelet showing Hello Kitty’s face and ruby ribbon interwoven to blend with plum blossoms. Highlights from the collection are: BROOCH This captivating brooch is made spectacular by using Akoya pearls, rubies, diamonds, mother of pearl and corals embedded into red and white plum blossoms to brilliantly outlined the adorable Hello Kitty’s facial contour. The design captures a lush, embellished branch of the plum blossom, manifesting the traditional aesthetics of Japan, extending the inviting warmth of spring.

39

TIARA Hello Kitty’s face shaped in a three-carat diamond that sits in the centre of this tiara makes this the anchor of the collection. Intricately designed as a statement piece, it features the dynamic combination of bejewelled florals adorned with Akoya pearls, onyx and diamonds, together with strawberries made of rubies. The surprise is in the strawberries which are lockets which can be opened to reveal Hello Kitty and her boyfriend, Dear Daniel. The dazzling three-carat diamond Hello Kitty’s face which adds a touch of sophisticated elegance to the design is an exquisite example of a symphony of romantic love and MIKIMOTO’s refined craftsmanship. NECKLACE This layered pearl necklace has been inspired by Hello Kitty’s love for cherry blossoms. This iconic necklace traces her face and depicts her gazing at the breathtaking blossoms. It features 12-strands of Akoya pearls with the signature Hello Kitty’s ribbon formed using rubies. Her eyes are set with onyx and the cherry blossoms are a harmonious melange of diamonds and pink sapphires. This design makes a voluminous and gorgeous impression for the discerning wearer. +

DYNAMIC HEIR TO ANIKA A passion for supercars keeps the Deputy CEO of Anika Insurance Brokers & Consultants Pte Ltd driven. TIMOTHY JUDE FU-TIEN WIMALA is such a mouthful and this bubbly young heir to renowned insurance broker ANIKA knows it. The good natured “Kojak” cheerfully tells everyone to call him whatever they wish - Timothy, Jude, Fu-Tien, Wimala, Anika, or even Kojak (after the title character of a famous 70s detective series).

Completing his studies in Operations Research in 2006, Timothy grew up in the warmth of loving but strict parents and a very nurturing grandmother who thought him to understand and appreciate the source and value of everything and everyone around him. His no-nonsense father brought young Timothy up to respect his seniors, recognise the virtue of teamwork and compliance for the greater good but at the same time understand his duty to exercise judgement and wisdom. With such a strong grounding in ethics, Timothy now helps his parents manage their 3 decade old insurance business with ethos that balances going all out for ANIKA’s clients while stopping short at taking abuses. “Quite often an individual’s lack of understanding

results in fear, paranoia and naturally progresses to poor conduct; under my stewardship, ANIKA’s culture of patiently educating prospects and clients has continued in the footsteps of my father.” says Timothy with a sense of pride at the philosophies and principles his parents have imbued into the company and in him. “ANIKA has always been a bespoke and discreet general insurance broking outfit for our private and commercial clients. The visibility of our supercar / ultra-premium luxury motor underwriting book has occupied a distinct space from the portfolio of corporate risks, group benefits, industrial, marine and transit business built up over the decades. This has been bolstered in no small part by our in-

which reputational damage would be inflicted upon our client’s business. As always, ANIKA and her partners relish the opportunity to distinguish the degree of service it can render unto its clients. And from this we have grown through the strongest marketing tool one can hope for – the testimony of a grateful or satisfied client” house expertise which has been refined through the contribution of young and passionate colleagues in tandem with stalwarts who have supported my parents from the early days where was even a dearth of office furniture and IT equipment” From the arrangement of billion dollar credit risks to the extension of covers to war torn regions, there has been no client request which Timothy’s team would write off without absolute certainty that placement would be impossible or exceedingly cost inefficient for the client.

“On numerous occasions, our client’s instructions were imperative that expedient remediation of damage after a fire or flood loss was required. This gave us a window of only hours usually during the pre-dawn period beyond

A fan of Porsches since the age of 7, Timothy dreamt of owning a 911 for the longest time. He inched a step closer to realizing his dream in 2012 when he bought a Porsche Boxster which he drove to Mae Hong Son, Northern Thailand in 2013 with a group of Porsche enthusiasts. He resisted the temptation of the 911 up until he was introduced to the ExotiCars Club in mid-2014, when he was invited to a weekend getaway to a resort at Sepang to watch some World Cup matches. “I don’t even watch soccer, but the camaraderie and spirit of the members and its committee were simply infectious. Quite a few members asked me if I was keen to join the club. You know that 911 Carrera 4S I had been eyeing before that weekend? I booked it the Monday I came back. The Exoticars Club was the excuse I was looking for to fulfill my 911 dream!” laughed Timothy. “I was quietly happy when Mr Chia (the President) sent me an email accepting my membership application as this Club has a reputation for being very

difficult to get in” [this writer could see Timothy heave a sigh of relief when he narrated this]. In fact, not only did Timothy get into the ExotiCars Club; his dynamism and helpfulness during that trip impressed the ExotiCars Club committee so much that they invited him on board as a Protem Committee Member shortly after he became a member. “I am so very proud now to be a part of this hyperactive, resultdriven and hardworking brotherhood” enthused Timothy. Shortly after this interview, Timothy, departed an Exoticars Club organised Mclaren Track event at Sepang and went on a 6,000km solo drive in his 911 covering Hat Yai, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hot, Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son, Pai, Surat Thani, Nakorn Si Thammarat and Pattani. It was on this drive that he proposed to his girlfriend, Tanyarat. “I am fortunate to have my passion for both motoring and refined driving machines braided in the career which I have chosen. Even more so, I am humbled by the time you have taken to feature me and I give all credit to my parents and the strong team at ANIKA”. + Opposite Better late than never: Timothy has been a fan of Porsche since he was seven years old but bought a Boxster only in 2012.

This page Timothy says he is proud to be a part of ExotiCars Club, which he describes as a “hyperactive, result-driven and hardworking brotherhood”.

The trans-seasonal collections may be foreign to many but for those in the know, it is the most commercially viable season for the industry’s top players. From whimsical floral motifs to sharp lines and precise cuts that brings to mind the utilitarian characteristic of military uniforms, the Cruise Collection presents looks that everyone will covet. Some of the top trends this season include quirky polk-a-dots on skirts, silk blouses as well as accessories, as seen at Fendi and Louis Vuitton, and loud, bold prints, as seen at Diane von Furstenberg and Missoni. We highlight some of our favourite collection for this season’s transseasonal offerings.

ottega eneta With a colour palette that spans from pastel shades, such as in light blue, sorbet green and sunshine yellow, to stronger hues, including black, navy and scarlet red, the Bottega Veneta Cruise 2014/2015 collection goes back to what it is known for - quality craftsmanship and exquisite materials. Fabrics were expertly dyed and bleached to give each look a painterly colour effect and lines are fluid for a more relaxed look. The result: Easy-to-wear pieces that boast exceptional workmanship.

arolina errera The designer Carolina Herrera focused on simple shapes and daisy blooms for her label’s Cruise collection. To give the collection a more feminine twist, delicate embellishments were done on dresses as well as floor-length gowns. Subtle emphasis were also given to the waistline, such as in the use of classic belts, to give more definition to the waist as well as to create a more hourglass figure.

BRIGHT SPARKS “

This is something close to my heart and that is why I do this on an

annual basis. It is my way of giving back to those who needs help most. Helping those less fortunate than us has never looked this chic and stylish. With her La Coeur and Evil Eye collection, jewellery designer Andria Wijaya wants you to do good while piling on the bling. When it comes to creating stylish arm party looks, Andria Wijaya is the go-to person for the fashionable elite. Afterall, as the brains and hands behind the successful jewellery label Andria W., the Perth-based Indonesian jewellery designer has been gaining the attention of accessories fans with her unique charmbracelets as well as garnering international recognition in publications such as Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia and, most recetly, Grazia Russia. Launched in 2003, the label specialises in wrist candies that are handcrafted using semi-precious gemstones. However, just like many bignamed fashion brands, Wijaya wanted to do something more for her label as well as to give back to society. This came

three years ago in the form of Andria W.’s Compassion Fashion range, where Wijaya designed two special edition collections of charmbracelets. Called La Couer and Evil Eye bracelets collections, these wrist candy pieces are part of a project to give back to the community. Inspired by her son, who is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, the annual charity drive aims to help the less fortunate.

This is done through donation of daily essentials, such as books and clothing, services as well as through non-profit charities such as Variety, The Children’s Charity Singapore. A portion of the proceeds gathered from the sale of this special collection also goes to needy children across Southeast Asia.

“My husband and I have been so blessed to be able to provide him with the support that he needs as well as enrolling him in the right school,” says the self-taught jewellery maker. “However, I’ve seen many parents in Singapore who are not able to provide the basic therapies required for their child with special needs.”

“This is something close to my heart and that is why I do this on an annual basis. It is my way of giving back to those who needs help most.”

This year, Wijaya has chosen to help the needy children with the sale of her special edition bracelets. Pure And True It’s true – your skin is the largest organ of your body, and a direct reflection of your well-being. Strengthen its natural defenses with a premium range of V10 Plus serums, which are designed to cater to your skin’s every need. V10 Plus understands how taxing our environment and lifestyles can be on our delicate skin. The Japanese skincare brand’s innovative line of water-based serums feature the purest of natural active ingredients that are not only absorbed quickly and effectively, but also work in tandem with the body’s natural systems to enhance your skin to its fullest potential. For Intensive Hydration – V10 Plus Hyaluronic Acid Serum Studies have shown that at the age of 60, the levels of hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate) – one of the main components of the dermis and horny layer of our skin – are at about one-third of the levels that are present in the skin of an infant. Each gram of hyaluronic acid can hold up to six litres of water, demonstrating its ability to retain moisture and keep even the deepest layers of our skin hydrated. The V10 Plus Hyaluronic Acid Serum is reputed for its high permeability due to lysolecithin (phosphatide), the main component of cell membranes with the ability to accelerate the process of penetration.

For Firmness and Elasticity – V10 Plus Collagen Serum Collagen dominates roughly 80 percent of the dermis layer to maintain the firmness and youthful appearance of our skin. Unfortunately, this crucial component will begin to decline rapidly after one’s mid-twenties. V10 Plus harnesses the power of marine collagen from fresh sea bream scales to formulate the Collagen Serum. It contains a higher level of amino acids, and its molecules are smaller than collagen extracted from pigs and cows, thus allowing thorough absorption at a quicker rate. Combined with marine elastin, this potent serum helps your skin to regain the softness and elasticity of its youth. + Available at selected beauty retail outlets and salons. www.v10plus.co.jp Above Akiko Yokota - CEO/Founder of V10 Plus.

SMOOTH OPERATOR – 4GRF SKIN TIGHTENING WITH INFRARED You know you’re ready for the camera when you’re armed with tighter, silky-smooth skin for a more youthful appearance. Says Su Ling, owner of Desire Aesthetics: “Personally, I would recommend the 4GRF Skin Tightening treatment as a pre-party service as it is affordably priced at $160 per session, and is extremely effective, too.”

67

A most popular procedure at Desire, Infrared Skin Tightening can be administered anywhere on the body from the face to even areas such as the abdomen and arms. A tightening and rejuvenating effect is achieved by directing light and heat to the dermis layer of skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production as well as a tightening effect, which continues even two to three months after the treatment. FLAUNT EVERY INCH – FAT FREEZE / CRYO LIPOLYSIS After finally finding the perfect dress for the occasion, what matters even more is that you look good in it – from every angle and light. Flaunt the contours of your body with even greater effect when you treat yourself to Cryo Lipolysis, which uses cooling technology to safely induce localised fat reduction in just 45 minutes per session. Also known as ‘fat freezing’, fat cells are crystallised and break down before being dissolved and flushed out by the body’s natural processes.

Established in 2007, Desire Aesthetics is a premiere aesthetics group in Singapore and Malaysia, with three conveniently situated medical aesthetics centres in Singapore. Using top-of-the-line technology and products, unmatched professionalism and highly personalised services, Desire’s drive to excel in the beauty and aesthetics industry has propelled it to achieve the multi-award winning status it enjoys today. + Desire Aesthetics (Strictly by appointment only) 9 One North Gateway #01-44, Shops @ One North Singapore 138643 Tel: +65 6779 5466 +65 6685 5637 10 Anson Road #03-33, International Plaza Singapore 079903 Tel: +65 6222 8586 9 Raffles Boulevard #02-23, Millenia Walk Singapore 039596 Tel: +65 9787 5262

Su Ling recommends one to three sessions for optimum contouring results, which inevitably varies between different people and their body types. With little to no downtime, this painless and non-invasive process permanently destroys fat cells and is great for reducing fat tissue around problem areas such as the back, abdomen, thighs and arms.

AFFLUENT discovery

TOP-END TIME TRAVEL Affluent was invited aboard the maiden voyage of the Aqua Mekong, where gratuity flows generously. The Austroasiatic natives of Indochina have been adroit agrarians since circa 4000BC. Having settled in this sunny and well-irrigated arable land, the early Khmer and Vietnamese people gradually mastered terracing, thus evolving a rich culinary culture of healthy vegetables, which is balanced out by deep fried and spicy treats – cooking techniques and styles learned from 1,000 years of Chinese rule. To this day, the Vietnamese and Cambodians still love and need their staple rice diet. Also venerated fishermen, these

two sister communities still brandish several unique styles of preparing their myriad of readily available fresh water fish, among their delectable eclectic faire. Although a monumental cuisine to master no doubt, one of the most highly acclaimed Indochinese restaurants in the world is run by an Australian – David Thompson. The decorated master chef has been stealing headlines recently with his latest brazen move, which was the designing of the entire

menu and dining experience of the Aqua Mekong. A sight and unique experience itself to behold, the Aqua Mekong is Aqua Expeditions’ indulgent interpretation of seeing the Mekong. After attaining great success on the Amazon River with state-of-the-art boats the Aqua Amazon and the Aria Amazon, partners Fred Brown and Francesco Galli Zugaro set their sights on the ancient South-East Asian river to unveil a new echelon of exclusive luxury.

87

Gifted with typical Italian attentiveness to detail, Zugaro meticulously combed through each and every aspect of the Aqua Mekong experience, so as to ensure that it would be by far the top-of-the-range mode of taking in the exotic waterway’s flora and fauna, cultures and ways of life. Zugaro achieved this in remarkable record time, commissioning the building of the private boat on 13th December 2013 and boarding its maiden cruise on 14th October 2014, exactly and a mere ten months later. To say the least, the Aqua Mekong is a sight to behold. Meant for a maximum of only 40 guests per trip, but staffed by 40 bilingual crew members each time, its stunning balcony rooms and floor-to-ceiling windows command this jewel of the river the reverence of other Mekong holiday cruises, which are humbled in the Aqua Mekong’s shadow as it glisters in the equatorial sun. Zugaro willed this pleasure craft to have the region’s most breath-taking

sundeck and pool deck, which in modern times are the hallmark of opulent private yachts, complete with calming earthy tones and a panoramic view to die for. Its library contains books shedding light on the cultures of both the Khmer and Vietnamese people, including culinary master class books both by and on lauded celebrity chef Thompson. Its entertainment room boasts fashionable and comfy Eames chairs arrowed toward a widescreen television, which like any other mobile device on the boat, has access to an excess of videos on demand provided by Aqua Expeditions. A customisable vacation between Vietnam and Cambodia, the highlight of this floating five-star hotel is its lounge bar, which spans half of the top deck. Here, even Thompson jostles amongst the numerous designer labels that are name-dropped. A glitzy setup that lets sunbeams in through its blinds by day, this homely social area is embellished with a tasteful mix of furniture created by the world’s top interior artists. They flank this place of respite’s path to the bar, which is not

only designed by world-leading bar 28 Hong Kong Street, but also offers a menu of several popular beverages, albeit each with a local twist. The cruise’s native tour guides provide rare insight into the fascinating lives of riverbank dwellers – their partially floating stilt houses a metaphor for how their lives and livelihoods go with the mercurial Mekong’s tides. After the Aqua Mekong guest is shown how the region’s favourite mam fish sauce is fermented, and is brought on rare tours to relish the priceless painting and sculptural details of rare French colonial houses, one is invited to retire to the Aqua Mekong’s tranquil spa, which is plied by traditional masseurs and reflexologists. In this rural region that time forgot, where monks are dedicated to attaining nirvana and weavers lead stress-free artisan lives, Aqua Expeditions has built a serene haven of unmatched sophistication. + www.aquaexpeditions.com IMAGES COURTESY OF AQUA MEKONG | WRITTEN BY ANDRE FROIS

REFLECTIONS

by *Chia Boon Teck

LEADERSHIP AND MAINTAINING HARMONY It has often been said that Singapore’s pioneer political leaders are nothing short of a miraculous gathering of a group of altruistic individuals who served the nation passionately with little expectations of rewards. For decades, our political leaders inculcated this altruistic ethos in our grassroots and other voluntary organizations to serve the citizenry. Individuals with unhealthy ambitions or hidden agenda would fall into the bad books of their leaders and get eased out of the organization. The genuinely altruistic ones who slog on often got no tangible rewards. Instead, their rewards come in intangible forms such as the satisfaction of knowing that they have done good for the organization, a private pat on the back or a public praise from his leader, and being seen by the community as having the leader’s ears and attention. It is inevitable that some individuals in organizations would try to outdo or one-up the others to pursue his own leadership ambitions. Such conduct sometimes leads to what is commonly known as “politicking”, an over-doze of which can paralyze the organization. An effective leader would do well to keep a close eye on such conduct in his organization and not allow the same from getting out of hand and destroying the harmonious fabric of his team. Talk is cheap and criticism is cheaper. A leader has to look out for disruptive individuals who speak ill of others’ efforts and accomplishments out of envy or jealousy. Any signs of dissension or disloyalty should be nipped in the bud to stop the rot. Individuals who are unhappy with the organization or the leader should be retired from the organization before their negative energy exhausts the patience and resources of the organization. Most members tolerate dissension or disloyalty only to a certain extent, beyond which they would ease off their association with, or involvement in the organization, if the leader is unable to bring harmony back to the organization expeditiously. The dynamism of an organization has a direct correlation with how its leader works with his team members. A weak leader who dares not make decisions will use democracy as a guise to solicit the views of all his team members before taking the “safe” course of going along with the majority regardless of whether that course of action best serves the interest of the organization. Such a leader would be trampled upon by his team members every now and then and his term in office would not last long. The opposite of such a weak leader would be a dictator who runs the organization without regard for his team members’ views. He too, would not last long in office for no man can be right in his decision-making process all of the time. Ideally, an effective leader should hear his members’ views, gives his reasons for his disagreement, then decide what he believes best serves the organization. His team members should then respect his decision because ultimately the buck stops with the leader and he will take responsibility for any wrong decisions made. Once the decision is made, the team members should move on to other matters at hand and not revisit the topic like a broken record. If any team member finds himself frequently disagreeing with the leader’s or the team’s decisions, then he is obviously not in sync with the leader and/or the team in which case he should leave the organization as his talents may be better appreciated elsewhere. Many desire to lead. Few can. Failed bitter challengers will mock from the outside. But that would be a lesser evil than allowing them to disrupt from the inside. *The writer is a lawyer involved in various voluntary and social organizations.

No Time Like The Present Lexus presents two agile debutants who give an inkling of the company’s bright future.

Lexus is charging ahead with two off-kilter offerings built around its previously unveiled concept car. Based on a dream Lexus named the LF-NX, the esteemed car brand rolls out an efficient eco-friendly stallion alongside a potently engineered road warrior – the Lexus NX Hybrid and the Lexus NX Turbo. The realisation of the NX Hybrid and NX Turbo was a learning curve that could not be rushed; a process that arguably took about 10 years. Two new millennium machines recently announced by Lexus, the NX Hybrid and NX Turbo both sport monitors with 360-degree views and power-reclining seats, among a host of technological systems that were developed through years of Lexus’ storied operations. These new cars are also easily manipulated using the Lexus Remote Touch Interface, which provides comprehensive control of these technologically advanced automobiles, via a simplified touchpad. EARTH-FRIENDLY The recent debut of the Lexus LF-NX, the NX Hybrid was first presented to the world at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition last April, which was followed by the Singapore premiere of the ground-breaking car on the 1st of November. The twin offerings of the NX Hybrid and NX Turbo are Lexus’ second foray into the currently burgeoning sector of luxury SUVs, following the car manufacturer’s memorable and immensely popular Lexus RX.

The hybrid model is the environmentally friendly variant of the luxury pairing. Fine-tuned to yield excellent efficiency, its carbon emissions are contained to the mere 133 g/km. The NX Hybrid has a specially developed hybrid (HV) control and its 2.5-litre gasoline engine with electric power from a high-output motor, boasts fuel consumption of 5.7L/100km. Lexus has proclaimed its hope for the NX Hybrid to become a hallmark in developing industry-leading hybrids. With a specifically engineered sprung weight damping control to even out drives along bump roads, the forecast for the NX Hybrid is smooth sailing ahead. BORN TO BE WILD Soon to be released in Singapore, the NX Turbo is Lexus’ first-ever turbo-charged offering. Sprinting in on a 2-litre turbo direct injection gasoline engine, its raw power is harnessed and coupled by an advanced 6-speed automatic Sport Direct Shift transmission. This glorious concoction grants this serious sports vehicle a maximum output of 235bhp and 4,800 to 5,600rpm, as well as a hair-raising maximum torque of 350Nm and 1,650 to 4,000rpm.

AFFLUENT moves

Charming Facets

Those familiar with Jaacky See, managing director of New Funnels (S) Pte Ltd, appreciate him as the live wire at parties. In a recent social event organised by the ExotiCars Club, Jaacky who is its vice president, came dressed as a vampire complete with makeup, fangs, blood, and performed magic tricks with a deck of cards. In the day, Jaacky the businessman, is a portrait of the quintessential Singaporean entrepreneur who has turned his family-owned traditional small trading company into a highly successful modern company that specializes in providing a myriad of professional services to ship owners. “I come from the school of hard knocks,” declared Jaacky. “Our success today is really through sheer hard work. I started working for my father as a teenager. When my friends were all enjoying barbeque parties and movies on Saturday evenings, I would be working away. My father was very strict and he made me appreciate hard work and the value of money. I had above-average pocket money because my dad paid me well for the job. This made me popular because I was able to treat my friends to bowling and movies,” he laughed.

Businessman JAACKY SEE shares how he juggles his work with his love for supercars and raising funds for charity.

The company fell into hard times however, and in 1994, Jaacky bought over the ailing family business. “I had to sell my three cars and an apartment to rebuild the company. It was an uphill task because I had to work very hard to pay the debts and clear the overdrafts

taken by the company.” Luckily for Jaacky, he had his break when he transformed the company to provide niche services in lashing and securing equipment services, engineering and marine services in addition to marine trading and general services to ship owners. When asked to share his most important lesson in life, Jaacky reflected “Never give up even in the face of adversities and have faith in God’s will. I have been very blessed with good friends and associates who have been very supportive during tough times. I attribute our success to our wonderful team of professionals who have worked very hard with me. Most of all, I am very thankful to my wife who stood by me through thick and thin and continued to support me despite the difficulties we faced as a result of ill-advised decisions.” Today, Jaacky feels contented with a supportive wife and three grown up children — his daughter is pursuing a legal career and his two sons are working with him as the fourth generation in the family business. “I enjoy my work tremendously. I find great inspiration in solving problems with the ship owners. I hope that my sons will bring the company to the next level tof achievement.” Jaacky loves exotic cars and his fascination for such cars started when he was a little boy. The first vehicle he drove to school was a Toyota pickup truck that his father bought. “When

I made enough money, my first car was a white Nissan Pulsar before I upgraded to an Alfa Romeo,” shared Jaacky. Today, he has a stable of exotic cars which he enjoys driving during the weekend. Six years ago, Jaacky and a group of supercars enthusiasts founded the ExotiCars Club. Membership by invitation only, the exclusive club is a haven for its supercar-owning members. “It has been a wonderful journey of great camaraderie and friendship with fellow supercars enthusiasts who eat and breathe all about supercars. I have great fun working with many of our members, and the networking opportunities in the club are unparalleled.”

school in Jakarta, besides supporting other charities. With family, work, leisure and charity occupying his every waking moment, time is the most precious commodity for Jaacky. “Life is short. I want to live life to the fullest and leave my mark in every aspect of my life.” +

Renowned for his fund raising efforts for charity, Jaacky has raised impressive sums for many charity organisations including Kidz Horizon and Red Cross Singapore. It is not surprising that he has been greatly influenced by his father. “My father used to visit Hatyai every year and at first I was puzzled and thought that he went there for “recreation”. However, there was one year when he brought me along and to my surprise, he gave money to a temple that was supporting orphans and abandoned babies” revealed Jaacky who has followed in his father’s footsteps by giving funds to support two classes of children in a PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS TEOH | WRITTEN BY SANDY LEE

ROYAL SAKE For the first time, three renowned labels of rare sake were paired with Chinese cuisine at the Baxian Chinese restaurant, Tower Club. peculiar to Kanto in Eastern Japan. This leads to a clean and refreshing flavour with a slightly dry and crisp taste in the sake. It goes well with the pork belly served with preserved vegetable and French beans.

We started with Fudoh Special Junmai which was served with chilled slices of two-head abalone, cuttlefish and fresh cucumber on ice. The sake, clear like pure water, is produced by Nabedana Brewery, one of the oldest breweries in Japan founded in 1689. Located at Narita, the brewery has access to the moderately hard water that is naturally filtered through volcanic ash soil

The second sake, Tengumai Yamahai Jikomi Junmai is the flagship sake produced by Shata Brewery, one of the few that still make premium sake by the classical brewing method called “Yamahai”. This laborious method produces deeply rich flavoured sake and gives the sake its tinge of gold colouring. The Gold Medal winner at London International Wine Challenge 2011 is well received for its distinct purely-rice sake taste which goes well with wok fried Hokkaido scallops

served with asparagus and black truffle. We also tasted its Nigori sake that came in a blue bottle. This unfiltered sake was cloudy and very sweet, making it ideal with the dessert, chilled aloe vera jello topped with passion fruit sherbet, that was served at the end of the meal. Stir fried king prawn with diced garlic and dried chilli was paired with Sawaya Matsumoto Shuhari Junmai, the third sake. Produced by the Matsumoto Brewery, it comes lightly sparkling, which is highly unusual in sake but making it very refreshing on the palate. The Matsumoto Brewery in Fushimi founded in 1791 has one of its sake selected as the house pour of a Michelin 3-star Japanese restaurant Kikunoi Kyoto. According to Wendy Chua, senior brand executive at BeamSuntory which imports the sake, “Fushimi’s moderately hard water with high calcium content generally leads to smooth feel on the palate with a refreshing, but a slightly sweet taste. This kind of elegant sake is an ideal companion to authentic Japanese cuisine and refined and modern Asian cuisine as well.” +

A Season For Truffle Enjoy rare delicacies of black truffle infused cuisine prepared by Chef Mickael Le Calvez at Raffles Grill.

Beef cooked in red wine is one of the dishes listed in the Black Truffle Menu at Raffles Grill.

Raffles Hotel is making the festive season memorable with the launch of the Truffle season at the Raffles Grill. Chef Mickael La Calvez who has successfully tantalized the taste buds of gourmets in October with his spectacular offerings of delightful dishes using white truffle is now offering the Black Truffle season from December. “The Black Truffle season arrives just in time for Christmas,” according to Chef Mickael. “At Raffles Singapore we use the Tartufi di Alba white truffle and the Tuber Melanosporum black truffle, both of which are of the highest quality. I will be using the white and black truffle alongside other products available in winter in France at this time of year, such as scallops, pigeon and what we French call forgotten

Raffles Grill Raffles Singapore, 1 Beach Road, Singapore 189673 Tel: +65 6412 1816 Email: dining@raffles.com www.raffles.com/singapore vegetables - that includes vegetables such Jerusalem artichoke, salsify and parsnips.” The menu for his contemporary French cuisine includes artisanal Paccheri pasta beef cheek cooked in red wine, carrot, spinach and black truffle and golden Dover sole fillet scented with black truffle, forgotten vegetables, morels, and Jura yellow wine cream sauce. To accompany these dishes, Stéphane Soret, Wine Director at Raffles Hotel has personally recommended a selection of fine wines to pair with the Truffle menu, including a 2010

Domaine Aubert de Villaine “Les Saint-Jacques” Rully Cote Chalonnaise and a 2011 Luciano Sandrone Dolcetto d’Alba Piedmont. To ensure optimum enjoyment of the sublime flavours in the feast, Soret said, “When matching wine with truffles it is critical to stay away from too much acidity and over-oaked aromatics. I have selected medium to full bodied white and red wines that will not compete with the flavours of the truffles, but will instead assist in their aromatic persistence.” The chef has also prepared a much appreciated treat at end the meal: dark chocolate cream with citrus tangy juice and pure Guanaja chocolate sherbet. It was a most satisfying way to end an exquisite meal. Finally Bedtime International furniture heavyweight Natuzzi applies its muchbeloved finesse with interior design to curating a beautiful sleep.

Natuzzi Italia - Oasi

In the heart of vivacious Milan, design maven Natuzzi was making waves at the biggest furniture trade show in the world. An annual gathering of good living’s biggest players and sharpest minds, Salone del Mobile is the furniture industry’s marquee calendar event. For this 2014 installment of the fair, decade-strong label Natuzzi had hinted of an emphatic showing and duly delivered beyond expectations. Its big reveal, was the storied brand’s first-ever line of bedroom furniture. A refreshing new expression of la dolce vita in the epicentre of stylish living had the attendees of Salone del Mobile 2014 talking. The collection does not leave a stone unturned. Uncommon and refined fabrics and materials are tastefully combined to yield immense comfort permeated by stark Italian stylishness, while smart design is coupled with enjoyable textures in Natuzzi’s campaign for deep, undisturbed sleep.

59

The experienced architect of beautiful living describes the spirit of its debut bedroom collection as such: “The harmony of opposites – day and night, conviviality and silence, liveliness and calm – is the guiding light behind the label’s new concept of living.” Natuzzi chose to produce only six models of beds, each showcasing different aspects of the Natuzzi way of life, but most importantly emphasising the hallmarks of Natuzzi, which is “care for detail and love for quality”, as the brand recently declared. This partnership project was a serious undertaking that wanted all its parts to be entirely Italian-sourced, Italian-manufactured and Italian-assembled. Natuzzi commissioned lauded designers Claudio Bellini, and Manzoni and Tapinassi from the Studio Memo for this collaborative effort, whose premier flagship product is the Piuma bed. The idea of Piuma was to accentuate softness and comfort in daily living. This elegant bed is finished with dreamy details embellishing its charming periphery. A variation to Piuma’s rendition of five-star sleep is Oasi’s nest-shaped bed. Sculpted to evoke passion and modernity, the 160cm by 200cm to 193cm by 203cm-sized Oasi by Studio Memo nestles the couple in premium leather and fabric. Studio Memo’s other offering of similar size range is the Diamante, which captures one’s attention with its sleek but sturdy feet, upon which an intricately stitched leather headboard is mounted. Meaning “diamond” in Italian, Diamante is Natuzzi’s minimalist interpretation of contemporary chic, employing a quirky sofa-like design to pay tribute to Natuzzi’s rich heritage.

Natuzzi Italia - Diamante

The collection’s accompaniments include a conversation piece table by Claudio Bellini called the Ramo, as well as several refined sculptures, trendy dressers, lighting fixtures and accessories. Soulful sofas complementing Natuzzi’s first bedroom collection include Don Giovanni, which borrows its name from the iconic opera character and utilises fabric instead of leather in pleasing lines, and Poliziano, which conveys a fusion of modern styles in wood and metal. Founded in 1959, the furniture dynasty was painstakingly built by the diligence and genius of Pasquale Natuzzi, whose enchanting armchairs, sofas, furniture and home furnishing accessories garnered a large following. This immense popularity sees the company enjoying a nine-figure annual turnover today. Awarded the ISO 9001 and 14001 certifications, Natuzzi has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange for over 20 years. Besides its continual commitment to social responsibility projects, Natuzzi is a forefront wielder and guardian of classic Italian craftsmanship and know-how. +

Bonaldo is the craftsman whom the modern furniture market deserves. To the lauded Italian label, respecting tradition is no reason to not push the envelope. Over the years, Bonaldo has instead enhanced its brand name by being a pioneer of newage design. Its pieces are loved around the world because they are meticulously sculpted in line with Italian tradition, but are never conventional. They are always bold, but never ostentatious.

Modern Talking

The highlights of Bonaldo’s new conversation pieces.

BLOWING IN THE WIND Simply named Flag, Mauro Lipparini hovers a table top of variable materials and finishes above four detailed legs. Available black painted or black acidtreated glass, white painted or white acid-treated extra light glass, or in basaltic stone, this graceful surface creates an inviting platform for work, play and dining, as it provides the contrast for off-kilter legs of polished grey or polished white ash-wood, or in canaletto walnut. Flag’s four rectangular legs extrude prominently from beneath this conversation piece. They play off the minimalist table top with intricate details embellished by a steel profile painted matt in dove-grey, anthracite grey, orange or white. Lipparini reasons that their shear provides more legroom for guests. This simple creation carries an air of sophistication; an ideal complement to any elegant setting.

CUT YOUR RIBBON The ingenious designer’s other flight of fancy is the Razor chair, whose cutting-edge design is reminiscent of classic Italian furnishing, albeit with tapering metal feet and an ergonomically shaped lumbar region. Contrary to its name, the Razor is rather comfy and definitely attractive. Also padded in urethane and swathed in leather or skay eco-leather, the Razor’s eye-catching base is available in two versions: with four legs or with a metal rod frame (Razor X); and in steel, which can be chromed or painted in a variety of colours.

63

WALK THE LINE Lipparini’s other commissioned works with Bonaldo include a set of chairs. Kamar is a statement piece, offering the objet d’art enthusiast a variant to usual seating options. Shaped like a cheap plastic chair, Kamar is anything but. Swaddled in premium Italian leather, Lipparini leaves it block coloured, save the quiet lining detail that trails the surfaces in contact with the person. This decoration hides its zip, which opens up to reveal a steel silhouette padded with a thick layer of polyurethane. One has the option of owning Kamar chairs in either regular leather or skay eco-leather.

LIFE IN PLASTIC An increasingly iconic new member of the luxury furnishing market is Dondoli e Pocci’s Loto W chair. Its curvaceous monocoque seat cast from tough plastic flaunts a very compelling shape, and is supported by painted or chromed steel legs. The Loto W is available in a whimsy of finishes – transparent, smoked, green, plain white or plain black – yet it is more lithe than expected and stacks neatly one upon another. Also available with solid ash wood legs in various finishes, its remarkably versatile design endures a variety of settings.

SPEAK SOFTLY LOVE Another discerning choice of seating that Bonaldo suggests is Junan, created recently by the innovative minds of Bartoli Design. A silhouette of high-grade leather, its supple skin is easily removed and replaced by eco-leather or other fabrics of one’s choice. Bartoli Design’s aspiration for this quixotic model was to simulate a visual skirmish between disciplined lines and aloof curves. This four-legged dream is a joy to sit on as it is to behold, bolstered by a soft backrest and cushioned all around for the safety of your loved ones. +

HEROES OF OUR TIME Style icon Toncelli’s championing of both respected traditions and cutting-edge technology.

65

66

AFFLUENT living

Master artisans of classic Italian-style cabinetry, the Toncelli family has been defending the sacred arts of traditional handcrafting for several decades, to emphatic effect. The recipient of numerous industry decorations, the humble woodcraftsman house of Toncelli has been lauded for its flair with customising contemporary kitchens. Employing a keen eye for modern trends, Toncelli’s products express the young and dynamic company’s attentiveness to detail and expertise with a bevy of discerning materials. Toncelli recently declared its goal to capitalise on modern technologies as well as its half-decade of experience, in a bid to create kitchen solutions that engage clients emotionally. BROTHERS OF BESPOKE Above all, the Toncelli brothers who founded the design firm in the 1960s profess their understanding of the value of personalisation along with the importance cucito su misura, the “made-to-measure kitchen”. From the age-old art of marquetry to the most advanced technologies of buffing and polishing, Toncelli’s knowhow is vivaciously visible from the intricate treatment of the Tuscan company’s materials and finishes. “Over 50 years of history require us to safeguard our artistic heritage, our traditions, our secrets, our knowledge so that they are transmitted to future generations,” the brothers divulge. “We do not use the materials but we

forge them in our own image and likeness. Each kitchen has a unique and unrepeatable history.” VISIBLE EVOLUTIONS Besides being bolstered by a new and more interactive website, Toncelli has been driving forward under the banner of Invisibile, its sleek new collection. The fundamental pillars of these new offerings are elegance and the usage of carbon-fibre. “Invisibile” is the brainchild of architect Mauro Carlesi, who applies carbon-fibre, an extensively talented base material, to various facets of this collection. His preference for this lightweight and heat-, chemical- and wear-resistant synthetically engineered material is unquestionable, whose

virtues he lends to peninsula and hanging wall units, as well as seating, cooking and compartmentalisation units that are required to take a regular beating. Hardy carbon-fibre manifests within Carlesi’s concept in sophisticated design, shunting handles and grooves for ergonomism and streamline silhouettes. CLASSICISM TODAY This philosophy of amalgamation that Toncelli champions both salutes the future of the industry and tips its hat to provenance. Its array of collections built upon this mentality include Essential, which exercises fashion and geometry with a focus on practicality, as well as Nantìa, which offers “haute couture” living in world-class cosmopolitan environments.

Besides current flagship range Invisibile, lines like Progetto 50, which is a heritage collection that explains its own value: “2 items of mathematical inlaid work, 2870 different pieces for one inlaid work, 18 drawers to discover, 240 hours to make an inlaid door, 16 combinations of different materials mixed in just one project”, while Wind complements Progetto 50 with emotions of lightness and tranquility. GLIMPSES OF THE FUTURE Invisibile’s standout offering is Infinito, a carbon-fibre kitchen cabinet that showcases Toncelli’s discerning taste with colours. This sophisticated floorto-ceiling installation is equipped to open remotely, revealing a large amount of storage space. The statement-making material employed by Invisibile is called PaperStone, a revolutionary hardy fibre surface recycled from office

paper, that is extremely resistant to fire, stains, water, traction, impact, abrasion and corrosion, and is easily cleaned. Invisibile also uses new metal painting technology that is protective and strongly adhesive. Endowing the surface metal-like qualities, this aesthetically pleasing paint is also eco-friendly. Small, low-energy consuming modules with Innovative Low Power Solution are employed by this highly efficient kitchen island to graceful effect, in a kitchen ensemble that prefers charming silhouettes over grooves and handles. “Today more than ever, the market has a great influence on commercial strategies and a businessman must be able to read and translate new trends into specific techiniques, without losing his own identity,” shares forwardthinking Lorenzo Toncelli of the firm’s embracing of modern practices.

Having recently expanded into Moscow, Kiev and Taipei, the skyrocketing luxury brand was also a key participant in Eurocucina 2014, an international annual kitchens exhibition that was held in April this year. Awarded ISO 9001 Quality Management System, ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and OHSAS 18001 Management System and Security certifications, Toncelli kitchens have been warmly received in numerous international markets, while simultaneously charming clients worldwide via the label’s finesse and good taste. + Artisan Furnishing 71 Kim Yam Road Singapore 239369 Tel: +65 6733 9060 www.artisan.com.sg
