A NOTE FROM
THE PUBLISHER With the recent Budget announcement by the Finance Minister, many AFFLUENT readers will find themselves paying income tax of 22% (up from 20%) with effect from next year. It is interesting to note that the top 10% of tax payers in Singapore pay more than 80% of all the income taxes collected by IRAS. The following quote from the Finance Minister is worth reproducing: “The higher-income group makes a significant net contribution into the system, which enables the lower-income group in turn to get significantly more benefits than the taxes they pay. In other words, when we add up all our taxes – GST, income, property and other taxes - and compare them to benefits received, the low income group gets more benefits than the taxes they pay, while the high-income group pays more taxes than benefits received.” One humbly hopes that with the above facts and statistics in mind, society would graciously appreciate the role of the affluent, enjoy their contributions, and resist the temptation to indulge in envy. As we celebrate SG50, AFFLUENT wishes all our readers another 50 good years ahead. Paul Tan Publisher

AFFLUENT timepiece
Montblanc TimeWalker: Wearable Technology Montblanc’s TimeWalker Urban Speed e-Strap combines integrated technology device with fine contemporary timepieces.
Montblanc’s foray in the smart wearable technology, TimeWalker Urban Speed e-Strap, is a combination of a highly functional interchangeable strap with a contemporary mechanical timepiece. It is the first luxury brand to offer a smart strap fitted with an integrated technology device that offers connectivity via Bluetooth Low Energy, to selected Android and iOS smart phones. For the first time, an owner has a mechanical timepiece with highly useful digital functionality. THE E-STRAP DEVICE The e-Strap device has an inbuilt touch screen display, readable in daylight, to display the information and navigate through the functionalities. Encapsulated in a stainless steel case with rubber protection, the device can be easily fixed and adjusted with the passthrough strap.
31
For the first time, your time piece enables you to remain connected through the myriad of functions. They include smart notifications, signaled by vibrations that provide an alert of incoming communication without the need to look at the Smartphone. Get previews of e-mails by topic and sender, read text messages, see incoming calls and status updates of social media feeds or reminders of important upcoming meetings, all on the wrist. There is also the activity tracker, a simple tool to monitor the wearer´s physical activity over time and keep track of his personal daily goals. It also comes with remote controls which are useful for controlling the Smartphone with the e-Strap. The camera remote enables the taking of pictures with the smart phone by triggering the shutter with a tap on the e-Strap thus allowing better and easier selfies or group shots. The wearer can also play, pause, and skip music on the Smartphone which can be also remotely steered with the music control function of the e-Strap. Additionally, the Find-Me function allows searching for the watch or phone within a range of up to 30 meters. Depending on usage, the device needs to be recharged every 5 days using a standard micro-USB cable. The e-Strap is compatible with Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, Note 4, selected Android Devices running Android 4.3 and upwards as well as Apple iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, 6 and 6 plus. THE LEATHER E-STRAP The TimeWalker collection e-Strap is equipped with a pass-through strap made of the innovative Montblanc Extreme Leather. Created by the Montblanc Pelleteria in Florence, the Extreme Leather wristband undergoes a highly innovative manufacturing

process, giving the upper surface of the leather wristband a characteristic carbon appearance. Using a long and meticulous process, the leather is textured and simultaneously impregnated with an innovative treatment that does not only coat the surface of the wristband, but also bonds and increases its structural strength. This innovative technique produces leather that is not only resistant to abrasion but has proven to be heat, water and fire resistant and perfectly matches with the timepiece. The e-Strap device can be easily fixed and adjusted with the pass-through to all strap sizes 20/22mm. THE TIMEWALKER COLLECTION The TimeWalker Urban Speed e-Strap offers Montblanc’s finest technology in watch making, performance and avant-garde appeal highlighted by the use of contemporary material mixes featuring red design elements on a pure black background. Three new models, all equipped with mechanical automatic winding movements, are available. They include a chronograph, a UTC (United Time Coordinated) with a second time zone; and a three hands watch with the essential functionality of hours, minutes, seconds and date.
Above The TimeWalker Urban Speed e-strap has a device encapsulated in a stainless steel case with rubber protection, which enables you to remain connected through the myriad of functions in your timepiece. Page 31 The TimeWalker Urban Speed e-Strap features an integrated technology device that offers connectivity via Bluetooth Low Energy, to selected Android and iOS smart phones -offering for the first time, a mechanical timepiece with highly useful digital functionality.
The TimeWalker collection features the 42 or 43-millimetre case, which combines clean lines with architectural shapes, that made the Montblanc TimeWalker family of Montblanc timepieces instantly recognizable. It blends sporty elegance and masculinity and carries its unique aesthetics such as the signature skeletonised horns, a narrow bezel, a large dial with Arabic numerals in a distinctive, clearly contoured typography, and the characteristic lancet-shaped hands. All TimeWalker Urban Speed e-Strap models will be available in markets in June 2015 with or without the e-Strap device. + IMAGES COURTESY OF MONTBLANC | WRITTEN BY SANDY LEE

ROYALLY BLUE Diamond Industries has launched Cool Blue Tanzanite Collection using exceptionally rare gem stones in designs reminiscent of the nostalgic opulence.
34
AFFLUENT rocks
Using captivating Tanzanite from the hills of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Diamond Industries Jewellery Company (DIJC)—synonymous with exceptional jewellery collections—has launched a spectacular selection of stunning jewellery named Cool Blue Tanzanite Collection, Captivating Heritage Series. The latest Cool Blue Tanzanite Collection combines brilliant cut diamonds from Belgium and South Africa, adorned in a variety of white, yellow, or rose gold. The focus of this jewellery piece is Tanzanite, the rare blue gemstone that has been described as the most exciting rare stone of the 21st century. Most captivating is its rich velvety blue color with a hint of violet, which makes the gem extremely mesmerizing and mystifying, according to Managing Director of Diamond Industries, Olivia Chew. Inspired by yester-year’s opulence, DIJC founder Frank Chew started worked on this series to capture the nostalgia of opulence while reflecting the luxurious details of today. The result is an outstanding collection that will impress even the most discerning jewellery collectors as each Tanzanite jewellery within the collection depicts different representation of opulent heritage styles.
Executing the design for this exquisite collection has been most challenging. The process starts from the selection of the right piece of Tanzanite with the right amount of blue color intensity, symmetrical cut and clarity – to setting in a captivating design adorned with a special selection of similar grade marquise, tapered, and round brilliant-cut diamonds. “Extreme care must be taken to set the Tanzanite to prevent any unintentional scratches or chips, especially when paired with diamonds that cut almost everything,” she explained. “In addition, the setting of tapered diamonds can be rather challenging due to varying angles to fit each piece next to each other. Not forgetting, skillful intense polishing and detailed burnishing are required to bring out the shine in each corner of the jewellery piece. However, all the extra care is well worth the effort as the end result is stunning -- the diamonds fit perfectly without any view of the prongs between the tapered diamonds. This way, the Tanzanite and diamonds can truly exude their brilliance and intensity.” Tanzanite is highly valued as it is1000 times rarer than diamonds. Found only in one place on earth near the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa with unique conditions, the gem
35
stone is becoming rarer as its supply is limited. It has been estimated that the sources have only about 20-30 years’ supplies remaining and in recent times, it has seen appreciation in value. Chew said, “The featured design is a limited piece but our collection is limited only by the dwindling supply of Tanzanites from Tanzania. Fortunately, DIJC has secured sufficient inventory of these precious gems and we house the largest collection of internationallycertified Tanzanites in Singapore. ALL IN GOOD TIME
Meet ELIZABETH HSU, luxury timepiece dealer extraordinaire. Besides an eclectic love for collector’s edition watches, she also shares about her passion for luxury supercars, her latest business developments, and more. Championtime offers a professional maintenance service tailored to each individual client, including the polishing of watches to retain their curvature and angles. Clients who wish to overhaul their contemporary timepieces or restore vintage heirloom pieces will be pleased to know that the company specialises in these areas as well.
All images L-R Championtime is committed to impeccable quality, in both service and products; Aside from collecting timepieces, Elizabeth is also a supercar enthusiast; Elizabeth’s Ferrari F458.
For the past two decades, Elizabeth Hsu has earned a loyal following of timepiece enthusiasts with Championtime, which has gone from strength to strength ever since its establishment in 1994. Both Brightime by Championtime outlets at Lucky Plaza and The Bencoolen are well known for buying, selling, trading-in and repairing midrange to high-end luxury watches. Apart from being an authorised retailer for established international brands such as ORIS, Dietrich, Luminox and
Daniel Wellington, Championtime also buys and sells pre-owned timepieces from the likes of Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier, Audemars Piguet, Chopard and Richard Mille, just to name a few. Customers are also able to trade in their pre-owned luxury timepieces for new or pre-owned timepieces of their choice.
THE CONNOISSEUR’S COLLECTION Unsurprisingly, Elizabeth takes delight in expanding her ever-extensive personal collection of unique, discontinued and collector’s edition timepieces, one of which is a Rolex Submariner Steel range from the 1960s. “It’s interesting to see how this range of watches evolved through the decades, while staying through to its timeless Oyster case and perpetual self-winding movement,” she marvels. Other notable horological treasures under her ownership include rare Gerald Genta Retro Fantasy Disney watches, on which she remarks: “The lively Disney characters on each unique mother-of-pearl dial are simply exquisite. When paired with the signature jumping hour movements that are instantly recognisable in any Gerald Genta pieces, these timepieces are really lovely.”
37
A LOVE FOR SUPERCARS The enamourment with beauty and elegance extends beyond skillfully-crafted timepieces, as evidenced by Elizabeth’s collection of exotic luxury cars and avid involvement in related clubs and committees. This automobile aficionado has a particular appreciation for the sublime: “It is not speed that attracts me to the supercars, but the sheer leisure of riding in a superb Italian engineered exotic machine… It’s something I simply can’t resist.” A member of the Porsche Club since 2005, Elizabeth has organised and overseen countless local gatherings and events as the organisation’s social event director. She was also the Social Director of the Ferrari Owners Club Singapore, and held the positions of Vice President and Club Secretary in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Going forward, Elizabeth was recently invited by the ExotiCars Club to take office in its 2015 committee. She commutes to work in a sporty Ferrari 458 on weekdays, while the Maserati MC Stradale is her car of choice for a leisurely weekend drive. “On my off days or on the way to high tea appointments with my friends, my Mercedes-AMG C63 always comes in handy,” she adds. ALL IN THE FAMILY Time spent with the loved ones is just as important as work to this mother of three, despite her hectic schedule. Thankfully, her love for automobiles and driving is a shared trait with the rest of her family – which gives all the more reason to deepen familial relationships. “All my family members enjoy driving, too. We always look forward to the highlight of our week: every Monday, we drive in a convoy to dinner.” Apart from the weekly outings, Elizabeth and her family enjoy spending time together at home, be it cleaning their cars together, or having a leisurely chat by their fishpond in the company of their pet dog.
CARRYING FORWARD A LEGACY With her daughter’s coming of age and subsequent involvement in the company, Elizabeth began to gear her company towards the younger crowd and owners of trendy, larger-sized watches. The company launched its new wing, Championtime Gallery, in 2013 – focusing on a more affordable range of timepieces that caters to a younger generation of watch collectors. Championtime has also bolstered its online website and catalogues with its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages in recent years, establishing a presence in the social media realm in a bid to reach out to a wider range of local and international clients. With Elizabeth at the helm, Championtime has racked up numerous local and international accolades over the years. The brand was an award recipient at the 2011 Top 100 Singapore Excellence Awards and the 2012 Singapore Brands Awards. It was also named in the Promising SME 500 in 2013 and 2015, and received the Singapore Excellence Awards, Asia Pacific Brands Awards, Singapore Outstanding Choice Awards and Industrial Stars Awards in 2013. In 2014, Championtime was awarded the Top Entrepreneur Award and featured in the Spotlight Life Style magazines by Singapore Business Gurus. “We are proud of our achievements and most grateful to our loyal customers who have supported us through all these years,” says Elizabeth. “All of us here at Championtime are looking forward to more fruitful years ahead.” For all her business competitors, this dynamic woman is certainly the one to watch! +

Boho chic does not necessarily mean patched denim, macramé vests or hippy flower child. This season, designers take on the more romantic notion of the trend by introducing elegant and ethereal ensembles with silk frocks and tulle maxi gowns. Look to designers like Altuzarra, whose flowing, gilded gowns caused an immediate sensation, or Valentino, who translated the look into tiered, floralemblazoned dresses. One thing’s for certain: This is the trend you can wear for both day or night.

Every season, a specific decade takes over the runways, and after a close competition between the mod ‘60s and the 1970s, the latter has won out. But don’t expect to be rocking full-fledged bell bottoms next year. This time, it’s all about subtle touches in juxtaposing colour combinations and in a trousers silhouette that’s sometimes flared, sometimes full and wide.

AFFLUENT aesthetics
HEY, GOOD LOOKIN’ The pursuit for perfection doesn’t necessarily always break your bank, thanks to these special treats at Desire Aesthetics.
First impressions last, and none understands this better than Desire Aesthetics. Since 2007, the aesthetic boutique has offered a line-up of resultsdriven treatments across face rejuvenation and body sculpting, to meet the wide range of needs among busy men and women. Amid the hustle and bustle brought on by the lightning-quick paced society that characterises the 21st century, Desire Aesthetics sets itself apart as a sanctuary where your weary senses are soothed and revitalised.
A SEXY SILHOUETTE Pressure Therapy Body Slimming $38 per area per session Disturb fat cells until they become easier to eject from the body. This machine combines suction, heat and radio-frequency energy to knead, heat and stimulate fat cells to speed up metabolism and drainage safely and comfortably. As it does not hurt or damage your skin, it is popular for combating cellulite (the dimpled mounds usually found in the thighs and buttocks). It not only enhances the expulsion of fat cells from your body, but also helps to increase collagen production, giving skin a firmer and tighter appearance. “This treatment is one of best sellers… While the tummy is considered one area, thighs would require action on four areas for the front, back and sides,” says a spokesperson from Desire Aesthetics.
A BRIGHTER SKIN TONE 3G IPL, $68 This is offered for various concerns, ranging from whitening to pigmentation to photo rejuvenation. Multiple pulses of light and bi-polar radio frequency (RF) energy are sent into the skin, where the heat absorbed by skin cells in these targeted areas will result in collagen regeneration. By varying the wavelengths, hence the penetration of light into the skin, 3G IPL claims to provide a wide range of benefits. In addition to addressing blemishes such as discolouration related to excessive UV exposure, the treatment also supposedly reduces the visibility of pores for a smoother complexion. This helps to alleviate other ageing signs such as age spots, freckles, broken capillaries and adult acne. Pigmented lesions post-treatment will darken and gradually fade or flake off. Six weekly treatments are typically recommended for the most ideal results. “Our 3G IPL programme is a highly popular choice among our clients,” adds the spokesperson.
63
A FLAWLESS COMPLEXION 3G RF, $68 per session Best for the forehead, eye contour, cheek, jawline and neck, this delivers radio frequency (RF) energy into the deeper layers of the skin, where the heat causes existing collagen to contract and new collagen to grow. As skin elasticity improves, skin structure tightens and skin texture becomes smoother. The results are generally likened to those of a facelift – without surgery. A BLEMISH-FREE FACE Microdermabrasion facial, $48 per session By gently buffing away dead and damaged skin cells, microdermabrasion is designed to improve skin tone and texture. It addresses a multitude of skin concerns, such as enlarged pores, dullness, and other imperfections brought on by excessive sun exposure (dark spots included). During a microdermabrasion treatment, crystals like aluminium oxide are sprayed onto your skin. As dead skin and blackheads are sloughed away, pores become tightened, and skin appears smoother.
Microdermabrasion is believed to be especially effective for acne. When dirt, oil and other impurities are cleared, pores become unclogged, which speeds up the skin’s recovery from acne. The elimination of dead skin cells also diminishes the presence of acnecausing bacteria, hence skin becomes suppler and softer. Results are quick to show: improvements in skin tone and texture are typically observed after just one session, with imperfections noticeably reduced after two sessions. And because microdermabrasion requires minimal downtime, it is a popular option for busy urbanites who want to resume their daily activities. + Below Kick-start your pursuit for perfection at Desire Aesthetics.

HEIGHTS
OF LUXURY With unmatched ambience and a lavish host of amenities and services, The Upper House is a high-style haven that will make the city your oyster.
75
Surrounded by high-end malls and apartments in the premier lifestyle hub of Pacific Place, The Upper House offers much more than just an opulent location for exploring Hong Kong, along with stunning views of its renowned city skyline. The stately Hong Kong flagship property of Swire Hotels was launched in 2010, and has already raked in an impressive list of prestigious hospitality accolades from around the world – including the 2014 Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, coming in second among the Top 25 Hotels in The World – and deservedly so. AN ELEVATED EXPERIENCE Housed in a former 1980s apartment block, the establishment is truly a breath of fresh air in a skyscraper-filled metropolis, known for its highdensity housing and cramped living conditions. Despite being a relatively small luxury hotel, it is in fact home to some of the largest rooms available in Hong Kong. Even the smallest of its 117 rooms, inclusive of 21 suites and two penthouses, begin at a whopping 730ft. Each come with wonderfully spacious bathrooms that boast walk-in rain showers and limestone-clad baths, as well as dressing areas that exude a sense of relaxation and understated elegance. Your high-tech experience at The Upper House begins even before you set foot on the property; besides a paperless arrival and departure experience, luxury hybrid cars equipped with WiFi are also available for airport transfers and private hire. Personalised service is another highlight of the hotel, with pampering inhouse manicure, pedicure, as well as hand and foot spa treatments provided by The Nail Library – a recent addition to the hotel – right in the very comfort of your own room. ART AT ITS PEAK The Upper House is the opus of multi awardwinning architect Andre Fu, a Hong Kong-based design sensation who has also been commissioned by hotel groups such as Four Seasons and Shangri-La. Just as how its name is derived from Andre’s design philosophy of an “upward journey… elevating into a house above the city”, the ascent into the hotel begins with a circular bamboo enclosure, ‘The Lantern’, where an escalator illuminated with bespoke lamps take you to ‘The Lawn’ at Level 6, a lush outdoor garden and bar area.
Natural timbre, limestone and shoji glass contribute to sleek, minimalist interiors, creating an immediate sense of Zen and tranquility throughout. 350 original artworks in sandstone, ceramics, marble and metals take centre stage at every corner of the property, including Taiwanese artist Marvin Mintofang’s (b. 1955) wood grain sandstone sculpture, Cocoon, which can be found in each guestroom.

TIME AND SERVICE THIEVES A doctor and a lawyer were at a social event when the doctor complained to the lawyer that he often gets asked medical questions at such social gatherings by socialites who do not respect the concept of professional consultations. The doctor asked the lawyer whether he too faced such similar annoyance and how he dealt with it. The lawyer smiled and replied “Oh all the time. I send them my bill for consultation the next day.” The grateful doctor exclaimed “Why that’s brilliant! I shall do that from now on.” The lawyer sent the doctor his bill the next day for that consultation. If you ask a lawyer with green fingers for advice on how to beautify your garden, you wouldn’t expect to receive a bill for that. But if he dispenses legal advice for a living, why would anyone expect him to do so for free, whether you are a friend sitting in his office, or an acquaintance at a social setting? If all his relatives, friends and acquaintances seek free legal advice and services from him, how does he feed his family, pay his rent and staff? This unhealthy culture of seeking free services cuts across the board of all professions, trades and service providers. The hypothetical lawyer above is just an example of how professionals, traders and service providers get abused by time and service thieves day in and day out. “Thank you very much”; “We really appreciate your help”; “I’ll buy you lunch the next time you come to KL”; “I’ll recommend you to all my other Dato’ friends” - these are all just face saving ways of saying “I don’t intend to pay for your services”. Suppose you have been losing sleep over a physical discomfort, worried yourself sick over fears that it could be cancer, promised your God that you’d DO ANYTHING if it weren’t cancer, finally plucked up your courage to see a doctor after many days of anxiety, and when the good doctor assures you that there’s nothing wrong with you, do you decline to pay his bill because there was nothing wrong with you and he “didn’t do anything”? Suppose you committed a serious crime, told yourself you’d PAY ANYTHING to make the problem go away, and a resourceful lawyer managed to get you off the hook with a slap on the wrist, do you begrudge the lawyer’s bill since you weren’t prosecuted and sent to jail, and all the lawyer did was “made a few phone calls” and “wrote a few letters”? When I was a little boy, I used to observe marketing aunties hand over 2 eggs to the char kway teow hawker. I didn’t understand business then so I didn’t appreciate that these marketing aunties were depriving the poor hawker of making a few cents from using his own eggs. Today I still see Supercar owners sourcing for their own spare parts for their workshops to repair their Supercars. These Supercar owners are depriving the workshops of making a little margin from supplying the spare parts. Some workshops succumb to such practices in a bid to stay afloat since they can still make a few dollars from the labour supplied. I can empathize with the humble folks who survive on thrift. But I despise the well-off who take advantage of others. A mechanic complained to me that he once had a customer with a Ferrari who refused to pay his repair bill and instead invited the mechanic to a niteclub as a token of his appreciation. The customer spent the night dishing out $50 notes to hostesses to sit on his lap. The mechanic was disgusted that the customer denied him his hard earned money only to splurge on himself in the niteclub. If you have a good service provider who serves you well, pay him decently to keep him in business. He would be of no use to you if his business folds. What goes around comes around. *The writer is a lawyer involved in various voluntary and social organizations.

Two’s Good To Be True
With its stylish new look and a suite of state-of-the-art features, the Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II aims to push luxury several notches up.
37
Six years since Rolls-Royce unveiled the Ghost Series and steered it to worldwide acclaim, the company is again garnering attention with an updated version aptly christened Ghost Series II. Described as “an oasis of calm in a frenetic business world”, the car builds on the Rolls-Royce approach to luxury, fusing tradition with contemporary for that energetic yet refined character. Right from the start, the Ghost Series II is eye-catching, to say the least. Headlights have been re-sculpted, with unbroken daytime running lights to set off its dynamic silhouette. On the bonnet, meanwhile, a tapered “wake channel” emerges from the wings of the Spirit of Ecstasy, reminiscent of the vapour trail from an aeroplane. The bumpers have also been designed to appear wider, taller – and stronger. Fans of Rolls-Royce will notice, too, that the company’s waft line leans further forward in the Ghost Series II, hence imbibing the car with a sense of action and activity. For drivers and their parties, the Ghost Series II is a dream come true executed with exquisite precision. A new seat structure offers more comfort, with electronically adjustable thigh supports in the front and a “lounge seat” configuration that angles seats towards each other in the back. As with all RollsRoyce creations, fittings are nothing short of fabulous. The A and C pillars are dressed in sumptuous natural grain leather while the dashboard gets a fresh and softer coat. And evoking the craftsmanship of fine watches are individually applied polished metal chaplets around the instrument dials. While you may get luxury from many cars, you do not get the same level of attention to detail in commissioning a massproduced car like you do a Rolls-Royce. From 44,000 paint colours to one-off wood and leather creations, Rolls-Royce Bespoke will literally achieve anything that you desire. The Ghost Series II is a lust-have especially for those who want to mix business with pleasure. Its impeccable connectivity makes every journey not just enjoyable but also more efficient. On-board Wi-Fi means you can access email, share files, make phone calls and even squeeze in a quick teleconference – via a one-touch call button. The latter can even be

operated by verbal instructions for tasks such as navigation assistance (say “navigate to Dempsey Hill in Singapore”) and switching on the entertainment (“play radio”). No wonder the Ghost Series II has been recognised as the acclaimed “business tool” for the most successful entrepreneurs. Music lovers will be particularly pleased with Bespoke Audio. This unparalleled automotive hifi system marries expert fine-tuning of Rolls-Royce audio engineers with premium hardware and latest technological advances to maintain acoustic balance and performance. There are 18 speakers – all individually tuned – with both theatre and studio settings, which are supported by two bass speakers in the boot and two “exciter” speakers in the roof lining. A built-in microphone constantly monitors ambient exterior noise and adjusts volume and tone settings for an excellent listening experience. No mention of the Ghost Series II is complete without the Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller. In conjunction with the figurine’s 104th year, this comes in the form of a so-convenient touch pad, which recognises requests by handwriting, in English, Arabic, Latin and Mandarin characters. It also offers “pull and pinch” features – like a smartphone – for selecting or zooming in on areas onscreen. Most importantly, the Ghost Series II wants to make driving safer. Electronically controlled reflectors move in the direction of travel to respond to steeringwheel turns for a greater depth of vision when cornering. Its whiter and brighter light also provides better illumination (very useful for dim conditions)
and helps you stay more alert while on the road. Finally, a Satellite Aided Transmission harnesses GPS and mapping data to keep the car in appropriate gear when you do turns, exits and roundabouts. The Ghost Series II is more than just intelligent – it is also the pinnacle of the automotive world, and a car you can truly call your own with Rolls-Royce Bespoke. Lladró’s handmade precious porcelain lamps fuse beauty with luxury. Scene-stealing and softly elegant, Lladró left everyone at the recent Maison et Objet Paris beguiled with its latest collection of Winter Palace chandeliers. Drawing on its excellence in handcrafted porcelain – the Spanish brand has built a distinguished reputation with its vivid figurines – these lamps further reflect Lladró in one of its most romantic moments ever. As if whisked straight out of the castle of a Russian tsar, the Winter Palace collection is a throwback to the warm glow of a plush home, from where you can admire the wintry snow-covered landscape and soak up the charming ambience of a faraway kingdom. Meticulously crafted from porcelain, each lamp features exquisite elements like teardrops and beads. And instead of fabric lampshades, lithophanes adorned with classic reliefs lend visual interest to the soft, warm glow.
Be Light
Above Evoking memories and moments from an enchanting Russian fairy tale, the Winter Palace collection throws light on Lladro’s pursuit for artistic and technical perfection.
All this attention to aesthetic is underlined by a devotion to the technical know-how the porcelain artisans at Lladró are famed for. Indeed, from conceptual sketches to decoration to firing in the kiln, every piece is made and painted by hand by these esteemed craftsmen. It is via such a painstaking process from inspiration to creation that classic and unique pieces are birthed forth. Since 1953, the company has been churning out clever and cutting-edge creations from its only factory in Valencia. The Winter Palace range is a new sign of the innovation and tenacity of Lladró, which introduced lighting into its line-up in 2000 (along with mirrors) as part of its effort to expand its scope and sensibilities. Designed as “a highly sophisticated version of the Belle de Nuit chandeliers” that the company had launched most recently,
Winter Palace further reinforces its mission to imbibe imagination with function and performance. Available in white as well as white and gold finishes, the Winter Palace chandeliers come in three versions of six, 12 and 30 lights. PLAY FOR KEEPS
Bรถsendorfer turns neo-classical into nouveau with its Opus No. 50.000, an oh-so-extraordinary semi-concert grand piano that marries precious cabinetry craftsmanship and a dynamic orchestral sound.
43
Time has only amplified the appeal of Bösendorfer. Founded by Ignaz Bösendorfer in 1828, the piano company is synonymous with a rich and supple sound. This the Viennese native, who trained as a musician and then apprenticed with prominent piano builder Joseph Brodman, did by introducing a sturdier construction and stronger stringing. In celebration of its 185th anniversary, Bösendorfer rolled out the Opus No. 50.000. Among the world’s most exclusive pianos with only close to 50,000 units built over the 185 years, it takes 100 craftsmen and technicians to produce just 300 pieces per year. The Opus No. 50.000 is hence a testament to the distinctive artistry that goes into a Bösendorfer creation. Inspired by a pair of pianos – by acclaimed architects Theophil Hansen and Anton Grosser respectively – that featured at the 1867 World Exhibition in Paris, it references the neo-classical aesthetic that characterised the era. As such, gold is a significant theme in the appearance of this piano. Perched proudly at the front are two 24-carat gold-plated caryatids (female figures), which were created via a traditional lost-wax casting method for that vintage impression. And with gold leaf mouldings throughout the cabinet and the frame, the Opus No. 50.000 literally glimmers with pride. Explore further, and you will find a 24-carat gold-plated commemorative Opus No. 50.000 plate in the key block – an element exclusive to this already breath-taking instrument. If music is one of life’s greatest pleasures, a little luxury can make it even more invigorating. Bösendorfer’s legacy of superb cabinetry work
lives on in the Opus No. 50.000, in particular through the four veneers that have been incorporated into the design. The elegant textures of burled French walnut, French walnut, pear wood and maple veneers blend together seamlessly to give the piano a fascinatingly enthralling quality. On the treble side, meanwhile, you can also observe the marquetry inlay, which comes in the traditional motif of a harp (again, another unique feature of the instrument). What especially delights many musicians about the Opus No. 50.000 is its sound. Built based on the Bösendorfer’s bestselling Model 225 grand piano, which was introduced when Ignaz’s son Ludwig helmed the company, it continues to be widely regarded as the best chamber music and solo instrument in its class. Expect a more dynamic aural experience as four bass keys in the bass to the subcontra F – in addition to the standard 88 notes – deliver up a superb spectrum of tones. From a delicate pianissimo to a bold fortissimo, and every tune in between, this semi-concert grand piano is inimitable yet robust. Backed by an illustrious tradition in creating unique instruments, Bösendorfer, as the world’s oldest premium piano manufacturer, is still among one of the most admired names in the musical realm. Dedicated artisans and craftsmen work meticulously to achieve the stirring sound of Bösendorfer, even as their knowledge and expertise are passed down and constantly refined in order to fulfil the expectations of a new generation of music enthusiasts.
Above Like the Bösendorfer Model 225, the Opus 50.000 is fitted with four additional bass notes to extend its acoustic range and enhance harmonic resonances.
Below Going for gold is made easier when you own a Bösendorfer Opus 50.000, which is adorned with gold leaf mouldings, among other glittery bits.
Indeed, as Brian Kemble MBE, managing director of Bösendorfer, shared: “When Ignaz Bösendorfer founded the company in 1828, he was dedicated to the idea of creating the best instruments possible, no matter how long it took. His son Ludwig continued to pursue this vision and now, in the 21st century, it still remains valid for us as the manufacturer of the instrument with the inspiring sound – ‘der klang, der berührt’ (‘the touching sound’).” + Yamaha Music (Asia) Pte Ltd 68 Orchard Road #06-01 Plaza Singapura Tel: +65 6740 9327/9841 www.sg.yamaha.com www.boesendorfer.com

Designing For The Future SVEN BAACKE, Head of Design for Gaggenau, the leading luxury home appliance brand from Germany, shares his insights on designing products for the future.
47
Sven Baacke, Head of Design for Gaggenau, the leading luxury home appliance brand from Germany, shared his thoughts on brand design philosophy and his personal motivation in designing appliances for the future. Baacke, who joined Gaggenau in 2003 and has been leading a team of four product designers, has been credited as a driving force behind the development of many new appliances. During his recent and rare visit to Singapore, he gave local interior designers invaluable insights on what it takes to work for a brand that is at the forefront for home appliance design and technology. “Our products are not too loud. They remain humble but technically advanced and are made by people who put in their souls and give the human touch,” said Baacke. He observed, “In the last decade or more, home appliances which are perfect tools for doing specific tasks used to be big and sometimes obtrusive. Today, you will find home appliances integrated into the living room and they are almost invisible as they become part of the design.” For instance, Gaggenau’s zoneless cooktop, the CX480 with its intuitive operation turning the entire surface into one homogenous cooking zone fits perfectly into any custom-built kitchen. This novelty has been awarded with the iF gold product design award at the prestigious iF awards in 2011. In designing products for a global market, Baacke and his team of designers have adopted global values with local adaptation. He said, “Gaggenau appliances should be visually and technologically up to date for at least a decade or two. We don’t
use low quality materials or decorative patterns that may go out of style.” He pointed out, “Functionality is beauty. We try to infuse kitchen appliances with soul while making them durable and technologically advanced.” An important element in this process for Baacke and his team is to observe how the products are being used by different groups of people before trying to project the changes for the future. Baacke likes to exchange ideas not only with fellow colleagues within BSH but also with external parties. He explained, “It is about projecting trends for 2040 and how people will evolve in their lifestyle.” He admitted that it is not easy to project the future. “We take cues from what is happening around us.” In order to do so, Gaggenau design team conduct a lot of research with international chefs, and keep track of developments through blogs on design, architecture and art. They also attend major design fairs, for instance in Milan and in New York, to keep their fingers on the global trends and the way they are developing and evolving. For Baacke, good design is something that is essential but not obtrusive, almost invisible and humble. He shared a very personal story of one of his most valued possessions that he owns.
One in particular stands out, even after 25 years: “It was a Rollei camera which was small and precise, given to me by my father. I consider it a masterpiece and something close to what I would describe as a product with a soul. I still have it in my possession today,” he said. In his leisure, Baacke enjoys cooking, both Asian food and traditional dishes which his German mother used to prepare. This 40 something year old, who is from Stuttgart, also enjoys riding on his motorcycle around Munich, where he is now based. + www.gaggenau.com Above Gaggenau home appliances are well integrated into the living room.

Capesante con Bagna Cauda
TASTE OF FLORENCE Procacci Singapore brings some Florence heritage with its spectacular selection of dishes in its renewed menu and wines.
Procacci Singapore, a franchise of Procacci in Florence boasts a stunning view of the Marina Bay Promenade and skyline and has a renewed interior to match. First launched in 2010 at Customs House, the restaurant has a spacious alfresco bar and dining area which are popular for its relaxing bayfront view as the sun sets. Helmed by Group Executive Chef Mark Richards, the restaurant has a refreshed menu that offers for starters, the Capesante con Bagna Cauda featuring a trio of scallops with a dollop of ‘Bagna Cauda’, a Piedmont speciality which is a garlic dip mixed with anchovies. Its Tartare di Tonno e Caviale, diced fresh yellow tuna layered atop avocado bits and crowned with raw egg yolk and a spoonful of sturgeon caviar is made extra ordinary with basil pesto on the side topped with salmon roe and chili oil. Newly introduced primi dishes include Ravioli di Astice, stuffed with Blue Maine lobster and scallop mousse and

served on a bed of light bisque seaurchin emulsion. A popular order is the Pappardelle con Coda di Bue, homestyle broad, flat pasta cooked with oxtail ragout braised in the sauce of the premium Barolo wine, and perfumed with a dash of white truffle oil. Two new second course dishes or ‘Secondi’ have been added to the menu. The Costolette D’Agnello features four generous portions of full-flavoured thick-cut lamb chops, marinated with five-spice crumbs in sous-vide style. Served with crushed green peas with mint, roasted tomatoes and baby spinach with basil, and Barolo red wine sauce, it is a favourite among diners. Fish lovers will enjoy the Merluzzo alla Grecia, cod fillet that is pan seared then baked and topped with strips of fresh shallots. It is made flavourful by a side
of fennel, artichoke, olives and goat’s cheese, brought together with a white wine vinegar emulsion – all in a dish. Get a little of Florence heritage through its gourmet specialities made with truffles. The Tartufate Panini, which is essentially a grilled sandwich, is packed with wild mushrooms, housemade truffle cream and pecorino. Diners love the crispness of the hard salty Italian pecorino cheese cuts and creamy texture of the wild mushrooms in truffle cream. To accompany the dishes, an impressive range of Marchesi Antinori wines are available exclusively at Procacci. For a sweet finale, a must is its signature dish, the tiramisu. Here, it is made special with ladyfinger biscuits soaked in Kahlua and Bailey’s and layered with a silky smooth mascarpone cheese. Topped with a layer of coffee powder and a handful of roasted almonds, the tiramisu is served with mixed berries. Cantonese Cuisine Xin Yue, a modern Chinese restaurant offers classical Chinese dishes with a modern twist.
With a Modern Twist Xin Yue, a Chinese restaurant situated along Mohammed Sultan Road, has tantalized the palates of gourmets with its impressive array of classical dishes and special treats, inspired from around the world. Helmed by award winning Master Chef Fung Chi Keung, the previous group executive chef of established Paradise Group Holdings, Xin Yue boasts a menu that features an impressive list of both classic Chinese dishes and several modern dishes which have been infused with new flavours. Expect some of the best treasures from the sea prepared in different styles. Some highly recommended dishes include several traditional double boil soups. Top of the list is Lobster and Sea Prawns with Luffa Gourd Soup enriched with the sweetness of the lobster and prawns. Another popular offering is the signature Superior Sharks Fin in Japanese Claypot which uses Chef Fung’s version of a fish soup base. After 13 hours of double boiling, the soup is a rich and flavourful concoction with a generous serving of the delicacy. XinYue distinguishes itself as an extra ordinary Chinese restaurant with several of its signature dishes which are usually not associated with a Chinese cuisine. Besides adding foie gras in a few of its dishes, Xin Yue also offers an

interesting version of cod fillet. A favourite is the panseared Cod Fillet with Truffle Cream which is served with stalks of asparagus and onion rings. Whiffs of the beautiful aroma of truffle as the dish was being served certainly whetted great anticipation – and it did not disappoint. The chef’s Red Wine Lamb Rack is also another winner. Using only fawn under 6 months, the lamb rack was not only juicy but was tender and was not overcooked. Desserts are just as interesting. The variety includes chocolate cake with coconut puree in addition to the classic offerings. Highly recommended are coconut puree served with bits of young coconut and also pomelo with mango puree. Xin Yue offers set menus and special menus with seasonal products. Its modern dim sum during lunch is also very popular with diners. +

Customisation is one of the key highlights of the Blumun Fabric Sofa – a free cushion armrest allows you to modify the configuration according to personal needs and decoration themes. You can choose to have the modular components in high-arm or angular designs, while a separate bench can come in a top of elegant marble calacatta oro, regal emperador, mysterious portoro or uber-cool black cowhide. BED MANNERS You might have heard that we spend one-third of our lives in bed, asleep or awake. So it pays to choose a good bed. But as most design aficionados can attest to, it’s a bonus to get a bed that’s good-looking too. SOFA, SO GOOD It is almost always the first piece of furniture to greet your visitors, hence it is important to invest in a goodquality sofa that looks smart. And since you will be spending most part of your time with friends and family here, it must be comfy too. With the Blumun Fabric Sofa, French design multihyphenate Christophe Pillet has created a winner that transcends time and trend, leaving only good taste to prevail. Drawing on multifarious passions in architecture, music and interiors, as well as collaborations with international names like Lacoste, Renault and Shiseido, his creations are especially sought after by those who seek to live the stylish life. But back to the Blumun Fabric Sofa: constructed with metal (which is reinforced by multilayer wood), its clean-cut good looks don’t just blend seamlessly into the contemporary homes of recent years, but even lend a fine finish with its industrial-chic vibe. It doesn’t compromise on comfort either. Crossed elastic belts ensure a sturdy spring to the seats, with premium Assopiuma goose feathers to help the seats and back cushions protect our bodies, as well as padding in CFC-free, non-deformable polyurethane foam for better support. Different seams – five for fabric and six for leather – allow you to customise the bed, while the fixed slatted base can be adjusted to desired height. Decisions are also expected where the headboard (two heights are available) and galvanic finishing of the cast steel base (pick from black nickel and polished chrome) are concerned. Oh, its plywood structure means it can be easily dissembled and stored away. Comfort, meanwhile, is ensured with padding in CFC-free, non-deformable polyurethane foam and 100 per cent polyester fibre. What’s more, covers are removable, with the exception of the leather version. Designed by Red Dot Design award-winner Toan Nguyen, the Taylor Bed aptly illustrates the Parisian’s knack at fostering the natural interaction and harmony between users and objects. As such his creations are not only eco-friendly but also aim to express the evolution of our times. Innovations must be personalised. They must be useful. They must also be unique. These qualities set design studio kitchens apart from ready off-the-shelf units, points out Mr Andreas Kress, CEO of Zeyko Möbelwerk GmbH & Co. KG. The German kitchen system manufacturer, also a triple Interior Innovation Award 2015 winner, is known the world over for its objective to create products that offer “guaranteed Black Forest workmanship, with love for perfection, nature in mind”. “Just as cars have individual, distinguished leather or suede interiors, at Zeyko we offer reddot Design Award-winning ‘inline fittings’ in light beech or precious walnut – always genuine and always with solid, dovetailed drawer frames,” adds Mr Kress.
63
ZEYKO FORUM STUCCO LIGHT The littlest details speak the most, and the elegant Zeyko Inline interior fittings, made of walnut, reveal how important a role these play in creating the Zeyko Forum Stucco light. A reddot Design Award is testament to the success and style quotient of this kitchen system, which includes a wall of horizontal cover panels, complete with vertical front elements. Unfold these panels, and get ready to be greeted by a kitchen that sparkles in its lacquer of yellow zinc. A quartz stone worktop inside, however, ensures there is continuity from the sober palette of the door. Here, too, a shelf unit subtly lifts out of the kitchen island for additional workspace.
And Zeyko’s quest for innovation is still a work in progress. “And now we are adding a completely new surface type – Zeyko Stucco. It is a cement putty that is applied by hand to the wood composite, which makes every kitchen one-of-a-kind. And of course at Zeyko it is sealed with a luxurious matte protective coating to make it fully suitable for kitchens.” ZEYKO FORUM METAL-X2 WITH ZEYKO FLYBRIDGE If cooking every day is a joy for you, this will make the experience even more gratifying. The original Zeyko Metal-X has been upgraded with an additional surface. Completely crafted by hand, this soft wafer structure is coated with a special sturdy lacquer, which supposedly keeps the surface clean and even against all that action going on during preparation and cooking, including slamming and spilling. It also scores in the looks department as well, thanks to a new Zeyko statistics system known as the Zeyko Flybridge. It appears afloat off the floor – as if lifted by an invisible hand – and lends a smart minimalist vibe to the space.
ZEYKO HORIZON ACCENTO SMOKY EUKALYPTUS AND ACCENTO VITRIN If opposites attract, no other couple can create more sparks than warm wood and cool glass. The Eukalyptus veneer, coated in a sexy smoky hue, is cleverly juxtaposed against the relaxing and refreshing qualities of grey-coloured glass. The system also comes with a bar table, which offers the Zeyko Cargo. This pullout system appears as a breakfast cabinet that’s located above the worktop, and doubles as an electricity charging station for smaller appliances. Designed to make the most out of every corner in the kitchen, Zeyko Cargo is ergonomic yet allows easy access to kitchen essentials, hence guaranteed to leave every pragmatic homeowner well-pleased. + Artisan Furnishing 71 Kim Yam Road Singapore 239369 Tel: +65 6733 9060 www.artisan.com.sg Middle left Zeyko Horizon Accento Smoky Eukalyptus and Accento Vitrin is designed to make the most out of every corner in the kitchen, hence leaving every homeowner well-pleased.
