A NOTE FROM
THE PUBLISHER This issue coincides with the turning of a new page in Singapore’s history of governance. The irony of good governance is that most of us are entirely oblivious to the calamities which have been prevented, thanks to the Government’s effective policies and vigilance. On the contrary, we are more likely to praise the same Government for its rescue efforts only after unanticipated disasters strike. Do people truly believe that it is simply good luck that Singapore has not fallen victim to terrorist attacks in over 20 years? Or, could it be that our nation’s internal security forces have been working to protect us from tragedies and threats that we did not even get to know about? In a country where peace is often taken for granted, it is easy for those living in blissful ignorance to criticise and find fault with the Government over trivial matters, as opposed to the crises that the rest of the world’s nations are facing today. AFFLUENT toasts Singapore’s Government for its good work over the last 50 years. It is our incorruptible and meritocratic system that has allowed a distinctive group of affluent individuals to reside and thrive in our country today – individuals whom, without their support and readership, our publication would not exist. Here’s wishing our new Government, and all Singaporeans, joy and affluence in the next five years to come!

Chanel’s stunning Les Eternelles offers a collection of high jewellery secret watches, each designed as a cuff cased in 18k white gold and set with precious stones.
29
Chanel’s sensational collection of high jewellery watches “Les Eternelles de Chanel” has made the distinction of successfully bringing together the art of watchmaking with excellence in the craft of high jewellery. Based on three of the most cherished symbols of the house, namely the camellia, the comet and the feather, Chanel has unveiled three ultra-feminine “secret watches” which are carefully crafted and handmade in-house by its Parisian ateliers on the Place Vendôme. Encrusted with 18-karat white gold diamond, these spectacular timepieces made its debut at the Basel 2015 and boast façades of high jewellery pieces which captivate connoisseurs and collectors with their visually stunning works of art, each using about 2,500 diamonds. The biggest feat in all these was the perfection of the secret mechanism in each piece that enables the wearer to reveal the dial. The making of these pieces is the culmination of its expertise and knowledge in the art of watch making to create seamless functioning and conceal its technical aspects. What a delight for the wearer to discover the secret when the dial is revealed by swiping the cover horizontally –such a mechanism offers a private relationship with the wearer because only she knows how to unveil its time telling device.
As expected, much care and time has been devoted to the process in making these high jewellery watches. It is highly time intensive – each piece on average takes about 1300 hours. In addition, it demands precision, great attention to details with equal care given to the reverse side of each piece. Chanel’s ateliers adopted the honeycomb “à jour” technique which allows for greater brilliance of the stone pavé setting on the face of each piece. This is executed by cutting away metal from behind the stone-settings to allow light to filter through. The sides of the white gold cuffs are polished to create a modern contrast against the pavé surfaces. It is estimated that four hundred man-hours of setting were required for each piece. THE CAMELIA’S SECRET Chosen by Gabrielle Chanel for its simplicity, the Camelia is the favourite flower of the legendary fashion icon. Described as “a cuff, immaculate in diamonds and structured with the poetry of a garden” the piece features a path sparkling with flowers and leaves. The secret is revealed by pushing a tiny camellia to uncover the secret, a dial paved with 34 baguette diamonds.

THE COMET’S SECRET The comet is another of favourite motif of Gabrielle Chanel. As a tribute to the comet that Gabrielle Chanel created in 1932 for her Bjioux de Diamants Collection, the Comet is a cuff which is crafted using a combination of diamonds and sapphires that recreate a star-studded sky at night, complete with a sparkling constellation of stars. The secret is unveiled when the finger glides over a sparkling constellation of stars to engage a tiny star with a sapphire at its centre to reveal the dial paved with blue baguette sapphires.
THE FEATHER’S SECRET The feather, a symbol of elegance and graceful lightness, had endlessly been a source of inspiration for Gabrielle Chanel. As a tribute, the Plume Secret watch features a cuff bracelet and watch set with a diamond feather that hovers lightly over a hidden 34-baguette cut pink sapphire dial. When pressed, the white gold case which is snow-set with 2,319 brilliantcut diamonds and droplets of pink sapphires moves to one side to reveal the dial made of 34 baguette-cut pink sapphires. + CHANEL Fine Jewellery 391 Orchard Road 01-04 Takashimaya S.C Ngee Ann City Singapore 238872

was ignited at a young age. Most important to me is how jewellery and heirlooms stand the test of time, marking happy times that can outlive the wearer, thus becoming more precious and priceless as time goes on.” said Sara who was given a unique opportunity to work in the jewellery industry when some friends who dealt in diamonds and had a big manufacturing business offered her a position.
Sara Taseer Fine Jewellery, a leading Singapore-based multistore jewellery retailer, specializes in diamond, gold, and precious stone jewellery. Known for its unique style, Sara Taseer Fine Jewellery uses colour and form to make 3D structured pieces. “They are beyond ordinary. They are designed to make heads turn and create a presence. I work with animals and bird forms as well as architectural and floral motives within my themes. Every collection has a theme and within it the pieces remain true to the storyboard of the
collection. It is made with the finest quality natural materials, and is designed to be novel, fun, timeless and elegant, bringing out the natural beauty in every woman,” said the designer jeweller Sara Taseer. A former banker, Sara Taseer who spent her teen years in Singapore, studied at the London School of Economics before helping her father in his business in Pakistan. After her marriage, she went to live in London, Hong Kong and New York where she first established her own jewellery line more than 10 years ago. “I come from a culture where jewellery is part of life. It marks happy times and is given away in great quantity at wedding times. My maternal grandmother had a limitless collection. My passion
Sara said “The challenge with jewellery design is always the capital intensity of this trade. Pieces can become hugely pricey and even if they are gorgeous, people may not be able to indulge in a purchase. It is important to create pieces that are not only beautiful but show and retain their value. The challenge was to create and market my style. I was lucky, as always friends and family members were the first to appreciate and purchase. My quality and style spoke for itself. Once people were wearing it many more came to seek me out.” Sara recalls that her first collections were inspired by nature. “But I was conservative in my design. The bucket bag – a sensation throughout Spring/Summer for its practical yet ohso-pretty appeal – is set to continue its splendid run in Autumn/Winter 2015. Ladies with a taste for life’s finer things know, one can never have too many handbags. If there’s an urge to splurge on Autumn/Winter’s array of amazingly chic offerings, and Christmas just seems so far away, a bucket bag could be your most prudent purchase – or most pardonable lapse in succumbing to temptation, whichever you prefer.
MULBERRY
RALPH LAUREN
Bucket bags go with any outfit. This season’s throwback to the Seventies has brought hippie chic back into the spotlight – and the same liberation that powered the Woodstock generation is hitting home with sartorial-savvy tastemakers. As such, A/W 2015 is characterised by roomier silhouettes, bolder hues and quirkier mash-ups of prints and patterns. But no matter which style tribe you swear allegiance to, a bucket bag will take you everywhere. Whether it’s embellished with tassels (Burberry), fitted with a chain strap (Balenciaga), or crafted from calf skin (Ralph Lauren), the bucket keeps your mood carefree and your attitude confident.

looking frumpy or frazzled. Access is simple too, thanks to a clever drawstring design that loosens and tightens the top whenever required. For staying power, there is a supersturdy base – excellent for so often casually and nonchalantly chucking it onto the floor. Indeed, a bucket bag can lend instant street cred to girls on the go. What’s most important: you can rock bucket bags in so many different ways. Sling yours on a shoulder (Lanvin), swing it lightly while you strut the sidewalk (Chloe), or wrap your palm around as you would a precious treasure (Stella McCartney). Goes to show, these carriers are more than just another endearing accessory – the successful reinterpretations and renewals bucket bags have undergone also aptly reflect the equal measure of form and function women expect in their arm candy. +

With the Seventies resurgence in full swing, these are exhilarating times for the urban bohemian indeed. Runways overflowed with palpable joy, as fashion houses offered up collections that fused sprightliness and sensuousness for Autumn/Winter 2015. This season’s silhouette is relaxed, the pace almost languid, but its look more ladylike than ever. Boardroom dynamos on the look-out for a new sartorial investment can consider flared trousers. Thanks to smart tailoring and sleek lines, these nostalgic garments will be more than just uberfashionable must-haves. By playing up feminine curves without bordering on fussy or frivolous, flared trousers can be worn as part of a two-piece suit or paired with a blouse or bustier.

While flared trousers are easy on most body types, make sure that your pair comes with an excellent cut. They should fit snugly until the knee, where the fabric flares out – by cleverly balancing out the proportions, flared trousers can help create the illusion of longer and leaner legs. To appear taller, pick a design with a higher waist. Remember, too, the taller you are, the wider you can go. To appear slimmer, on the other hand, control the volume with a fitted top, or slip a tailored coat over. The on-trend way to wear your flared trousers now is with leather sneakers, a la Paul Smith. But if that’s too nonchalant for work, take the cue from Chanel. MY LITTLE PONY(TAIL)
Have A Good Hair Day!
© DIOR
For ladies with a long to-do list, how does it get any easier than the ponytail? This season’s hairdo du jour was paired with smartly cut tailored suits (Paul Smith, Dior), romantic high-necked pussy-bow blouses (MSGM), and almost everything else in between. A low ponytail (fasten it at the nape) not only lends je ne sais quoi to your outfit but also helps slim your face. If there’s no time for a flat iron (for super-shiny strands), hair gel applied from the hairline to the base of the ponytail can reduce the frizz.
Here are the mane attractions for Autumn/ Winter 2015, along with fabulously easy tips to getting these looks.

RIDE THE WAVES
The Bohemian rhapsody gets to our head, as fashion houses like Gucci, Burberry, Chloe and Ralph Lauren pay tribute to the Woodstock generation. Wear yours loose and long, with a soft tousle for texture. A stress-free trick to create this look: braid hair while it is damp, and release when it is dry. To tame flyaways, part in the centre or on the side.

JUST ADD WATER
Making like you just stepped out of the shower makes you feel so cool, fresh and powerful. It explains why the wet look has gained new strength for Autumn/Winter 2015. Alexander Wang plastered his muses’ miens with glossy strands, while sculpted swept-back manes at Marni lent a contemporary sensibility to Consuelo Castiglioni’s women warriors. Using fingertips, apply hair gel and comb hair to desired style. For better hold and texture, spritz on hairspray then blow-dry. Otherwise, wear your favourite deep-conditioning treatment to the office.

On days for getting down to business, a bun is your best bet: pull hair together, swirl into position, and secure. From structural creations at Balenciaga, to playful pastel two-pieces at Prada, to opulently embellished offerings at Marc Jacobs, hair went from deliberately undone to over-the-top quirky. Pull hair into a high ponytail and, with twisting motions, wrap hair into a bun. For an undone effect, use a pencil to lift random bits of hair in front of the bun.

LASTING IMPRESSIONS Dr Ewen Chee recounts his journey from his humble beginnings as a one-man practice, to the founder and medical director of The Chelsea Clinic and Gangnam Laser. Your appearance has a profound impact on your emotional wellbeing and way of life. Just take it from Dr Ewen Chee, who once battled with skin problems himself. “I never had good skin while growing up as I was plagued by severe acne,” reveals Ewen. “When I was studying in the United Kingdom, I was constantly singled out for my acne scars. It affected me confidence-wise, and even psychologically.” This experience was crucial in shaping his perspectives on and passion for aesthetics in the years to come, and has led him to have greater empathy for patients suffering from skin problems and low self-esteem.
The 44-year-old began practicing aesthetic medicine in 2001 at the practice he founded, Wen & Weng Medical Group, which was later on rebranded to The Chelsea Clinic. As one of the first to use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) in Singapore, the doctor established himself as a familiar name in the field of medical aesthetics, and soon expanded to a group practice with a team of likeminded doctors. Today, The Chelsea Clinic has two outlets at Wheelock Place and Rochester, providing a comprehensive repertoire of aesthetic services and anti-aging medicine to both a local and international clientele. RIDING THE KOREAN WAVE Over the last few years, Ewen took a growing interest in the Korean approach to medical aesthetics, which also inspired him to establish Gangnam Laser Clinic at Harbourfront and Raffles Place. With a focus on laser facials that aim to rejuvenate the skin and enhance one’s facial profile, he aims to provide state-of-the-art Korean treatments through Gangnam Laser.
“Korea has largely been acknowledged as the aesthetic capital of Asia, and many innovations and new aesthetic techniques have been emerging from Korea over the past decade,” he expounds. “The standards of skin care and aesthetic treatments or surgery in Korea is amazing, probably due to the rich experience they have from the high demand for such services. I feel that many of the protocols or treatment methods employed in Korea are, in many ways, more suited for Asian skin.” BREAKTHROUGHS IN BEAUTY The field of aesthetics is a rapidly evolving one. As such, Ewen highlights the absolute importance of keeping abreast with the latest research and technologies available, in addition to ensuring that the treatments are safe, effective and proven before introducing them to his patients. “What excites me most about this industry is that less invasive treatments are required to achieve results that once could only be done under the knife,” he enthuses.
59
Some of such treatments currently offered by The Chelsea Clinic include Restylane Skin Boosters to improve skin radiance, hydration and tautness; Korean PDO threads for lifting; and 360 Acne Clear Gold Toning to treat acne and pigmentation. CONFIDENCE IS KEY According to Ewen, aesthetic medicine is not as superficial as some may think – it is about improving the patients’ quality of life by boosting their confidence. He goes on to share that some of his patients even see him as a ‘matchmaker’ of sorts, and fondly recalls how a lady, whom he once treated for acne scarring and obesity, found love after experiencing positive changes to her physical appearance. “Her main issue was a lack of self esteem. Through a series of treatments over a year, her acne scars improved significantly and she lost weight. This actually spurred her to socialise more,” he explains, adding that he was eventually invited to her wedding. “Seeking aesthetic treatment is a way of life these days. However, a few may go overboard to the extent that it becomes an addiction. It is our duty as doctors to make sure that what the patients receive is safe, effective, and not overdone.” +

FOOD, ART AND FASHION AT CHIJMES It was a bright and spirited sunny evening at the luscious CHIJMES lawn with renowned finger painting artist Adeline Yeo. The inspiration of art, paired with limited edition fashion collection, ‘Something Beautiful’, modelled by Adeline’s friends brought much cheer, joy and life to the beautiful setting illuminated by the restored chapel standing tall and proud behind. Freshly shucked oysters and refreshing mojitos sponsored by Wharf Oyster Bar & Seafood complemented the event’s main highlight; Adeline’s live painting performance. “I love the paintings by Adeline Yeo,” exclaims a guest at the private event as she held up a scarf inspired by her favourite painting Running with the Roses. Honoured with a merit award at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation, CHIMES once again, plays host to the memorable garden soiree with celebrated artist Adeline known for her exuberant and vibrant artworks. +

ON THE WATCH In the realm of luxury timepieces, Roger Dubuis has a very special place. Relatively younger than most other fine watch manufactures, it has earned a loyal following with its avant-garde, slightly masculine aesthetic. One especially successful model is the Excalibur Quatuor, with a skeletonised dial that shows a quartet of balance wheels for precise timekeeping. It was also the Excalibur Quatuor in Rose Gold that delighted the 40 guests who had turned up at the Roger Dubuis boutique at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands on July 22 for an exclusive networking session co-organised by the Geneva-based brand and Affluent magazine. +

A MERMAID ADVENTURE The ExotiCars Club celebrated its 6th anniversary in style at the RWS Aquarium in August 2015 with 90 Supercars. The black tie gala dinner was emceed by popular DJ Joe Augustine who hosted games which saw 20 lucky members going home with exclusive commemorative pure silver SG50 coins. Touted as the most difficult Supercars club to join (membership applicants undergo a very stringent screening process), the ExotiCars Club remains super exclusive as Club President Chia Boon Teck puts it “Owning a qualifying supercar is the easy part of joining our club”. ARTISTS’ CONCEPT
In 1990, Crystal Cruises set its course as a pioneer in luxury cruising with the launch of its first three ships, with an emphasis on by providing guests with unparalleled service, space, quality, and choices. 25 year later, the award-winning cruise line is expanding its horizons beyond the expected, delivering luxurious travel keenly tailored to the changing needs of the modern traveller. Over the next three years, Crystal Cruises will charter new waters indeed. It will introduce new ships – effectively establishing three brand new classes of cruising – as well as its own Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to give an even more nuanced and exciting experiences for guests. Says Crystal President and CEO Edie Rodriguez. “We continue to listen to what our guests and the luxury traveler want, and river cruises are what they’ve been telling us they want for some time – it’s a natural extension of the exceptional ocean cruise Crystal has offered for the past 25 years. But more importantly, they want to experience river cruises on a luxury Crystal vessel, and their desires will be fulfilled on our luxury Crystal river yachts.” As such, launched in Europe starting in late March 2017, the new collection of two Crystal river yacht vessels will boast a yacht-like design that takes a fresh approach to the traditional river itineraries and experiences, while retaining Crystal’s luxury mainstays. ALL ABOARD The 70-suite luxury river yachts, which will be built by German shipyard Lloyd Werft, will surpass current and planned river boats or ships, and be the first in the industry to feature exceptional amenities and itinerary highlights. One thing is for certain is that staying on a yacht need not necessarily reflect cramped quarters as the river yacht vessels feature even larger accommodation. Guests will be able to relax for hours in one of the 250 square-foot guests
suites, furnished with generous walk-in wardrobes, feather-soft American king-sized beds and even bathrooms with double vanities for the couples. For added comfort and convenience, the two resident Penthouse Suites are bound to impress too with its expansive 500-square capacity – perfect for throwing that yacht party and popping some champagane to celebrate with your friends and family. As you venture out of your suite, you will further enjoy the spacious public areas and amenities designed to entertain or indulge for hours. With Crystal Cruises already well-known for its lovely promenade decks and expansive facilities – full-sized cinemas and even night clubs being the norm- you will not be disappointed with the yacht vessel either.

ARTISTS’ CONCEPT
All images Top to bottom: With generously furnished suites that rival that of designer homes, it’ll be no surprise to find yourself lounging in luxury aboard; Going beyond even the rivers and seas Crystal Cruises conquers new aerial horizons too with its own Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
Look forward to the glass-domed Palm Court with dance floor to boogie the night away, or get your dose of health and fitness on the seas too with the wellappointed fitness center and spa. No cruise experience too, is complete without the people. And with a higher space-to-guest ratio than any other river cruise ship, Crystal’s signature allinclusive six-star service remains a mainstay. The exceptional European-trained and friendly staff pay deep attention to detail and your needs, giving you service befitting a traditional luxury liner while adding just a touch of modern edge to your adventure. AN EYE FOR ADVENTURE As much as staying on-board is an alluring option –what with the menagerie of fun programmes and amenities – the yacht aspect of travel widens up a whole host of avenues for land adventures as well. Taking advantage of its large suites to avoid the hassle of multiple packing and unpacking with preand-post hotel stays, Crystal’s new river vessels deploy itineraries that maximise time in port for meaningful shore-side excursions and experiences. It even covers new territory, setting to call in ports never before visited by Crystal’s acclaimed ocean vessels, Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity, a golden opportunity for all the savvy, globetrotting guest out there to gain rare new travel perspectives. For those who wish to be enchanted, take an excursion to some of Europe’s most charming cities, or enjoy the views of some of the most picturesque rivers in Central Europe. Sailing along destinations
such as France, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria during daytime hours, your eyes will undoubtedly enjoy a visual feast scenerywise. Moreover, this timing strategically affords guests the opportunity to enjoy the nightlife in select destinations with port overnights, which will often present inclusive culinary experiences ashore at Michelin-starred restaurants and local eateries, and exclusive evening events and entertainment. During days spent in port, you can enjoy a bevy of the immersive Crystal Adventures as well as launch its newest shore-side program called Active Exploration Adventures. Tailored for guests wanting a highintensity shore-side activity, it is the ideal active excursion for guests to explore the splendid European landscapes while staying fit on their vacation. For independents who want to create their own active adventures, choose from a myriad of on-land vehicles such as bicycles, segways or other active gear to kick start your exploration. “The beauty of river cruising is not only that travelers enjoy close-up access to more fascinating inland locales, but also that the rivers themselves are coveted destinations that shouldn’t be overlooked,” says Crystal Cruises CEO Rodriguez. “Our guests will have the opportunity to revel in the unique environment that sets river cruising apart from other travel experiences. As for those that yearn to take the road even lesser travelled –all in luxurious style, of course – the luxury yacht tender will also be available for private yachting experiences for oneof-a-kind journeys with maximum ease. Crystal’s itineraries will also intentionally deviate from traditional river cruise routes to avoid congestion of other vessels in port, further ensure a smoothsailing experience to top off a journey (or journeys) of a lifetime. + Prime Cruise Asia Pte Ltd 16 Raffles Quay B1-32 Hong Leong Building Singapore 048581 Tel: +65 6507 3734/5/8/9 Email: helena@primetravel.com.sg IMAGES COURTESY OF CRYSTAL CRUISES | WRITTEN BY JESSICA LAI

RESPLENDENCE The Fullerton Hotel lives up to its sterling reputation as a world-class landmark destination, imbued with both historical and architectural magnificence as Catherine Ng, General Manager of AFFLUENT, can attest to. Formerly home to the General Post Office, The Singapore Club and the Chamber of Commerce, The Fullerton Building was once recognised as Singapore’s largest building from its completion in 1928. Today, it is known as The Fullerton Hotel – a venerable landmark that inspires all who step through her doors. STEEPED IN HISTORIC SPLENDOUR All authentic details of this legendary building have been meticulously restored to represent the height of Palladian architecture in Singapore. Its majestic Doric columns, coffered ceilings and Italian marble floors are offset by contemporary interiors and state-of-the-art features within the
hotel’s extensive facilities, as well as its 400 rooms and suites. Says Catherine Ng, General Manager of AFFLUENT: “The Fullerton Hotel’s fairly central location and understated elegance makes it a fine luxury pick for discerning business travelers, holidaymakers and staycationers alike. It has all the amenities you would expect of a five-star hotel, with even a heritage gallery on the ground floor.” LOFTY LUXURIES Guests at any one of The Fullerton Hotel’s 28 suites enjoy exclusive access to The Straits Club, the hotel’s premier executive club, and its privileges – including personalised roundthe-clock service, complimentary daily Champagne breakfast as well as evening canapes and cocktails,

amongst others. Catherine had the pleasure of experiencing such luxuries during her stay at The Fullerton Hotel’s Loft Suite: a twostorey, 1,173 square foot duplex suite with a towering ceiling and spiral staircase. “The Loft Suite offers a great view of the Marina Bay waterfront past its original double-storey French doors,” states Catherine. “If you happen to stay here during the F1 race season in Singapore, you will also be able to catch the racing action at one of the most exciting turns of the circuit – all from the comfort of your bed!” “There is also quite a range of DVDs available for loan, which is just one of the many The Straits Club privileges,” she adds. “This made it perfect for us to stay in and enjoy our lovely suite while catching up on some of the movies from the hotel’s DVD collection.”
Pier restaurant at The Fullerton Bay Hotel, a conserved 1933 heritage site that once served as one of Singapore’s first ports of call for immigrants. This 208-seater waterfront dining establishment presents an elevated concept of Singapore’s intrinsic hawker culture, while also offering quintessential dishes from neighboring Asian countries such as Indonesia and Hong Kong. Weekend diners can look forward to the restaurant’s all-new Dim Sum Heritage Brunch, where piping hot Asian classics are served in traditional trolleys, with live stations lining the restaurant to dish up local delights reminiscent of the pier’s rich hawker history. Catherine shares that some of her favourite dishes include Two Generations of Rickshaw Noodles, and Fried Carrot
Cake & Sweet Prawns. “It was an extremely relaxing experience dining there, especially on a Sunday afternoon while a three-piece band was performing a string of oldies,” she recalls. “The Fullerton Heritage did a wonderful job integrating the original structure of Clifford Pier with classy, modern elements. Overall, it was a great experience with excellent service, amidst an amazing setting to enjoy weekend brunches with friends and family!” + The Fullerton Hotel 1 Fullerton Square, 049178 Tel: +65 6733 8388 www.fullertonhotel.com

REFLECTIONS
by *Chia Boon Teck
SG 50 (SUCCESS & PROSPERITY)… SG 100 (DON’T TAKE FOR GRANTED) 2015; SG 50; Golden Jubilee; newly elected Government. We often complain about having “no time”. For many of us, our work takes up a large part of our day while the little remainder of our waking hours is divided between our family, friends, social activities, and a little rest & relaxation. The altruistic amongst us may squeeze some voluntary or community commitments into the equation. Our high standard of living requires us to give it our all in our work so that we could give our family our best. This takes priority over our friends, social, voluntary and community activities. So for those with voluntary or community obligations, it wouldn’t take much for them to throw in the towel when the going gets a little rough because they really have “no time” for voluntary or community activities if they feel unappreciated or abused. Their free time would be better appreciated by their family and they could all do with a little more “me” time resting and recuperating from a hard day’s work. So who are all these Members of Parliament and grassroots leaders burning away all their weekday evenings and weekends organizing and attending voluntary and community events, listening and attending to all the woes and grouses of their constituents? Many MPs are successful individuals in their careers. Their responsibilities as an MP are often far more demanding than their day jobs, and contrary to popular belief, their MP allowance is not commensurate with their responsibilities. Their private lives become fair game for public scrutiny. As for grassroots leaders, they do what they do without any honorarium. Yet we have been able to throw up candidates to stand for election as MPs as well as recruit grassroots leaders for the past 50 years. But for how long more we are able to sustain our system of persuading such individuals to step forward and serve in voluntary and community activities remains to be seen. Like I said above, it doesn’t take much for such individuals to throw in the towel if they feel unappreciated or abused. Successful individuals are highly mobile. They can uproot and relocate with little difficulty. When that happens, the opportunists and charlatans will take over and milk the system while they could. When we separated from Malaysia in 1965, S$1 = RM1; today S$1 = RM3. Back then, if bookmakers had accepted bets on the value of the two currencies, would you have betted the other way around against the Sing Dollar? And what a contrast in the way we celebrated our 50th anniversary on 9th August with tears of national pride, compared to how Malaysia celebrated its Independence Day three weeks later with the biggest street protest in its history. We complain about our flats when others have no homes. We gripe about our air conditioned public transport when others walk or cycle. We are bitter about our standard of living when the average student carries an iPhone and the average household enjoys the domestic services of a citizen from a neighbouring country. Singaporeans under 30 have had it good from day one, whereas those of us who grew up in the LKY era know how fragile our “success” is. What we have built in 50 years can so easily be destroyed in five. As we continue to enjoy our peace, racial and religious harmony, incorruptible Government, and relative affluence, time will tell if we are able to continue to persuade capable patriots to take us to SG 100, or whether we would be ruined by opportunists and charlatans before then. *The writer is a lawyer and involved in various social and voluntary organizations.

Following Bentley’s huge announcement, the impending heir to the throne promises to turn the luxury SUV market on its head.

“
The reported 4,000 or so enthusiasts who have already
pre-ordered the Bentley Bentayga without meeting it in person or knowing its price, is testament to the belief and trust that Bentley’s unfaltering consistency garners.
”
Bentley shook the market when it recently announced its intent to enter the luxury SUV multi-corner fight. While dedicated all-terrain SUV carmakers had previously argued that manufacturers like Porsche and BMW might not have the technology and the savoir-faire to build family vehicles with true offroad grit, they stopped short of passing judgment on the Crewe-based powerhouse’s ambitions. Over the decades, Bentley has proven that even when it lacked the specialisation, its tenacious spirit would eventually help it win any battle that it set its heart to.
or knowing its price, is testament to the belief and trust that Bentley’s unfaltering consistency garners.
Such resolution has become the trademark of Bentley. The reported 4,000 or so enthusiasts who have already pre-ordered the Bentley Bentayga, which is named after the dreamy Roque Bentayga peak of the Atlantic Canary Islands, without meeting it in person
Videos during and preceding the capacious Bentley Bentayga’s German unveiling set the car in both dirt road and forest scenarios, where the mighty beast chewed up its environment gracefully, sans any possible camera tricks.
The Nurburgring-tested and certified Bentley Bentayga was eventually revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show this past September. It heralds an enthralling sequel to the clash of the luxury SUVs, as industry luminaries like Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini lurk on the horizon with four-wheeldrive family cars of their own, whose debuts too are as eagerly anticipated.

One is also compelled to tip his hat to the advanced safety systems and driver assist systems, which are an immense pleasure to toggle, configure and command by voice. A 4-litre twin-turbo V8 version is also expected to be announced in the near future.
The hills of Spain came alive as the Bentley Bentayga’s impressive air suspension and ground clearance helped it negotiate harsh driving conditions effortlessly. This responsiveness and adaptability achieved through the synchrony provided by stateof-the-art differentials was also exhibited in another Bentley video filmed on the subzero roads of the Arctic Circle. Likely to show up Audi’s beloved Q7, the Bentley Bentayga exhibited raw power in its diagonal acceleration, as well as formidable braking power – a rare capability that few SUV makers have managed to achieve. Under its sleek hood, a 6-litre W-12 engine (which stands for its 12 cylinders) is precision engineered to release energy evenly to the car’s four wheels, while amid this chaos, cutting-edge stabilisers ensure the smooth passenger comfort synonymous with the Bentley brand. Above each Bentley’s top-grade leather upholstery and hand-finished woods, of course the most primary element of a ride in a Bentley is the luxury of peace of mind, which the brand has best tried to maintain in the Bentayga.

One cannot deny that the Bentley Bentayga’s brushed aluminium chassis is far more alluring than those of its portly competitors. Lladr贸, the Spanish brand known for its exquisite fine works of porcelain, has unveiled an impressive collection featuring complex decorative techniques which require skills and talent of the very best artists.
Founded in 1953 by three brothers, Juan, Jose and Vincente Lladro as a family business, Lladro has since grown to an internationallyacclaimed company with its own boutiques located in major cities around the world. Lladro prides on producing unique works of art all handmade by craftsmen and artists including sculptors, painters, ornamentalists
and flower artists who all pool their knowledge and expertise to create a piece that becomes highly coveted.
in plaster to provide the first mold, which will in turn become the definitive mold for the porcelain figurine.
Each piece has its beginning from the artistic inspiration of a sculptor who also undertakes a meticulous process of research and documentation. After the first sketch of the new figure in clay is made, it is then reproduced
In its latest collections, Lladro has brought to life, one of the most well known legends of Saint George, the deity Kwan Yin and Hindu Goddess, Saraswati.

SAINT GEORGE AND THE DRAGON Saint George and the Dragon is a sculptural interpretation of the eternal battle between good and evil. It is inspired by the legendary Saint George, the patron saint of England, who is associated with bravery and honour and the most famous legend of Saint George slaying a dragon which represents the Devil.
SARASWATI Saraswati, one of the best known Hinduism Goddess, is also the Goddess of knowledge, learning and of the creative arts and is also the repository of Brahma’s creative intelligence. A beautiful woman with light skin, she sits on a lotus flower and in her hands are a Bina (an Indian musical instrument), a book that symbolizes the Vedas representing the true knowledge. Her four arms represent four elements of the inner personality: the mind, the intellect, the conditioned consciousness and the ego. She
is also adorned by an elaborate garland of delicate flowers, one of the brand’s signature elements. On Saraswati, Lladró has generously used golden luster, a complex decorative technique which cover parts of the piece with a painting of gold, requiring the skills and talent of the very best artists. + Lladró 290 Orchard Road #04-45 Paragon Tel: +65 6738 3900 www.lladro.com.sg
The greatest challenge in creating this piece is in the decoration. The finishing of the dragon uses enamels which bring the realistic decoration to life in each of its scales, vertebrae and physical details. KWAN YIN Inspired by the East Asian deity of mercy, Kwan Yin, the Buddhist goddess, is best known for her compassion and is also called the Goddess of Mercy. In creating this spectacular piece, Lladró uses innovative metalized and aubergine hues never before used on the handmade flowers that embellish this piece. It combines mate and glazed finish, while an aged silver look is used in some details. There is profuse use of handmade wild flowers displaying colors not used before in the Lladró catalogue. Coloured and crystallized varnishes have been used together with aged silver leaf for further pedestal embellishment.

Tantalising the Palette
Taste Paradise, the Chinese fine restaurant, continues to entice gourmets with their latest slate of new dishes.
in the herbal flavoured sauce comes crispy on the outside but tender when you chew teases your palate with its light Dang Gui flavour.
Gourmets who enjoy getting their favourite Chinese cuisine at Taste Paradise have been pampered by its tantalising dishes for nine years. The restaurant which continues to be very busy comes highly recommended for exceptional Cantonese delicacies and modern interpretation of Chinese dishes.
To make this dining experience unforgettable, the restaurant also presents a special steamed fish dish — the chefs showed their prowess in offering the Steamed Empurau with Chinese Wine (seasonal price). This requires advance order and depends on stock availability. According to the spokesman for the restaurant, the fish is highly-prized for the velvety smooth flesh with a distinct sweetness. “Empurau is known to be the most expensive edible fish in Malaysia, and thrives on a diet of palm fruits, which contributes to the sweetness of the flesh,” he explains. To match this delicacy, Eldwin Chua (CEO of Paradise Group) insists on using only the best Chinese wine to bring out the taste of the fish without overpowering it, and hand-carries them back to Singapore from China.
To maintain its innovation and impress customers, some new dishes have been added as part of its new menu. Favourites include the Shark’s Cartilage Soup with Assorted Seafood in Young Coconut which offers a generous serving of a variety of seafood. The rich broth made from a six-hour brew is served in Thai young coconut and it is one of the best bets to impress your guests as the soup exudes a light fragrance of coconut with a hint of the natural sweetness. The young and tender coconut flesh is an added bonus. Meat lovers will be impressed by the pan-seared Kurobuta Pork with “Dang Gui” Sauce in Casserole. Pick from two sophisticated finishes – walnut and beech or solid wood – for a delightful surprise and touch of homely chic when you open the drawers. Alternatively, opt for the new Le Mans shining chrome pull-out drawer with carousel shelving to allow even greater organization. Stepping away from the micro-details of drawers to the larger picture in the kitchen, Zeyko is also a name to reckon with when it comes to overall kitchen interior design. Take for instance its Country• and Country Plus range, a standing testament to beauty and functionality coming together in a cohesive whole. The Country style features exclusive casket fronts that are easily opened with a handle; whilst Country Plus comes with sophisticated framed fronts that open with a simple touch and push movement. Introducing simple elegance with a touch of modern comfort, the handcrafted set is elevated with a pannacotta paintbrush finish, bringing your kitchen to life with its timeless, pristine look. WINNING DESIGN Moreover, it’s not all about looks. Zeyko and its superior drawer systems have won tremendous accolades for innovation and are solid proof of its performance throughout the years. FINE BALANCE
For urban dwellers who want the best of both worlds, De Dietrich’s exclusive Corium Collection presents highperformance appliances with a gleaming minimalist aesthetic.
Sleek and sensuous, elegant and intelligent – these are not terms that you’d normally come to associate with your humble kitchen appliances. Luxury builtin appliance specialist De Dietrich though, might beg to differ, with its Corium Collection evoking sophisticated artistry within the kitchen with its classy finishes and clean polished lines. Espousing a minimalist aesthetic and precise design, these stainless steel beauties strike the perfect balance of style and usability, making them the ideal addition to your modern kitchen. WHEN FORM MEETS FUNCTION The Corium Platinum Steam Oven’s gleaming stainless steel exterior belies a powerful intelligent cooking system. With an intuitive TWIN Encoder touch controls integrated seamlessly within the glossy black panel, this sleek 45-cm contraption makes cooking light or healthy dishes a hassle-free experience.
The steam oven’s precise temperature control and versatile eight cooking temperatures (55°C - 100°C) is bound to excite your inner epicurean - be it for perfecting fragrant rice dishes or achieving the right consistency for the chocolate molten lava cake. This gentle cooking method using steam retains most of the natural vitamins and minerals in vegetables and fish. It is considered one of the most healthy ways of food preparation. Steaming also seals in the natural moisture of food, thus making it best poised to capture the pure essence and delicate flavours of food, minus the need for oil or seasoning. Be it sweet or savoury dishes, healthy eating is redefined as a robust sensory experience. Beyond steaming, the De Dietrich’s Steam Oven also proves handy with gentle defrosting, reheating and even rehydrating food options, making it perfect for the time-pressed urbanite who is too busy to prepare a full meal from scratch.
A TASTE OF PERFECTION Nothing completes a meal as well as the perfect cuppa. A staple of everyone from the corporate gogetter to the stylish hipster, the coffee has come to evoke a whole lifestyle of sophistication and cultural know-how. Understanding the modern citydweller’s dual pursuit of fast solutions as well as the finer things in life, De Dietrich’s Espresso Machine is deftly engineered to deliver both. As with De Dietrich’s signature operational simplicity and elegance, the touch-screen buttons makes brewing coffee effortless even in the most harried of mornings.

Even the most critical coffee connoisseurs will be delighted at the machine’s expansive scope that is specially designed to cater to individual palates. Latté or espresso, ground coffee or whole beans – regardless of your preferences, the De Dietrich Espresso machine is equipped with a 15-bar pump system which provides optimal temperature and pressure for extracting great-tasting espresso. And together with its frothing system, the unit’s automatic steam nozzle precisely mixes steam and air
to quickly froth milk for cappuccinos or lattés. After savouring coffee, the clean-up process is easy as well, with an automatic cleaning programme plus removable whole bean container and water tank for easy cleaning. AFFLUENT living
A unique uber-luxe property rising along the bank of the Thames looks to change the cityscape of London. AFFLUENT: HOW IS AYKON NINE ELMS DIFFERENT FROM THE PREVIOUS ENDEAVOURS OF DAMAC PROPERTIES? Niall McLoughlin: DAMAC Properties has a reputation for delivering the highest quality in residential, leisure and commercial properties in Dubai and the wider Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). While Aykon Nine Elms will be DAMAC’s first property development outside of the region and in the UK, this luxury lifestyle project is in line with our experience to deliver high-end quality in everything we do. AND HOW DID YOUR COLLABORATION WITH VERSACE COME ABOUT? DAMAC has a strong working relationship with Versace, and has already delivered two projects with the Italian fashion house –AL Jawharah in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and DAMAC Tower in Beirut, Lebanon. With DAMAC looking at expanding into international markets, we felt it appropriate to partner with an equally established brand that, like DAMAC, is synonymous with quality and luxury.
London’s first fashion branded property, Aykon Nine Elms is also the first-ever London property developed in collaboration with Versace Home. Wielding a plethora of thoughtful and luxurious details, the 50-storey, 360-unit development gleams in the rising prime property residential hub of Nine Elms. Brandishing a cinema, roof garden, indoor swimming pool and numerous Versace-designed amenities, Aykon Nine Elms’ panoramic views encompass world-famous icons like the Palace of Westminster and the London Eye. As London persist as an eminent capital city whose extremely sustainable real estate market boasts solid year-on-year price growth circa 6% according to real estate advisory firm JLL, as well as expected house price inflation in the region of 5 to 7% in the coming years, Senior Vice President of DAMAC Properties Niall McLoughlin enthusiastically elaborates on this unique investment property’s combination of convenient city living and suburban tranquility along the River Thames. DAMAC already has other partnerships with brands such as Trump, Paramount Hotels & Resorts, Tiger Woods Design, Fendi and of course Versace. Our strong collaboration with these established entities underlines the strength of the DAMAC brand. HOW DOES VERSACE ENRICH THIS SPECIAL PROJECT? Branded developments sit on the most competitive and innovative edge of the property market – global research conducted by Knight Frank reflected that value of projects can increase by as much as 25% when developed in collaboration with branded entities. DAMAC’s decision to partner with Versace hinges on its reputation as one of the most highly sought-after luxury brands in the world, and its Home collection representing high-end finishes desired by many home owners all over the world. Particularly in London, the Versace Home range has been extremely popular amongst consumers. + Further information is available at www.aykonproperties.com
