A NOTE FROM

THE PUBLISHER Our young nation’s celebration of SG50 climaxes this month as we celebrate our 50th National Day... yet our celebration is bitter-sweet as we remember The Man who made us what we have become today - Lee Kuan Yew - who passed away five months ago on 23 March. From third world to first in one generation. From slums and struggles to skyscrapers and supercars. We have worked hard to develop a Singaporean brand, one that represents a people as hard working, efficient, innovative and intelligent. Singaporeans are welcomed everywhere in the world, whether as a professional or a tourist. Holders of a Singaporean passport stroll through any immigration customs and quarantine checkpoint in the world without any hassle. And yet, as The Carpenters’ sing - “We’ve only just begun...”. Let us take this opportunity to toast all Singaporeans for playing your part in contributing to our nation building and developing our Singaporean brand. Here’s to 50 more good years. Cheers!

AFFLUENT timepiece

Bespoke and highly personalised timepieces featuring innovative designs and unique features can now be realised at the de LaCour store in Singapore. Having worked together with many high-end leaders in the Swiss watch making and jewellery powerhouses, three friends Alfred Terzibachian, Louai Kuzbari and Pierre Koukjian created a new wave when they started their own brand of highly personalised and truly bespoke timepieces with the launch of de LaCour in 2003. de LaCour stands out as a maker of exclusive timepieces, including oneof-a- kind design in the world of haute horlogerie. Its flagship model Bichrono, the original vessel for de LaCour’s philosophical spirit of duality, offers innovative application of Swiss craftsmanship through the synchronous reading of two time zones. In 2004, de LaCour unveiled the Bitourbillon, a unique timepiece which has a movement with two tourbillions. The first high end timepiece company which developed the first interactive, innovative, login-based portal, de LaCour allows clients to choose their unique personalization. Offering a truly bespoke service, the company transcends classical convention by pushing the boundaries of technical innovation to create each de LaCour which is fashioned from highly detailed manufacturing process. Deeply rooted

within the brand’s DNA is the concept of duality, which combines two opposing ideas within one concept with master artisans individually crafting each de LaCour timepiece, from the curved sapphire glass cases to special signature marks on the watch. Its innovative approach to bespoke watch making enables the wearer to create a watch that is highly personalised. This begins with finding the kind of timepiece the client wishes to have. Virtual designs of the piece are then rendered for the customer, after which the design may be perfected according to their exact preference. Depending on the intricacy of the piece as well as materials chosen by the client, a customised piece may take between two months to a year to craft. The result is a unique timepiece that is worth waiting for that is truly and distinctively theirs. Some unconventional materials used in de LaCour watches include jade, Havana leaves and gnarl of ambon. Customers can expect to see de LaCour’s five key collections, namely Bichrono, City, Saqra, Leap and Promess – all of which are manufactured in limited numbers.

AFFLUENT timepiece

BICHRONO Bichrono, the flagship model for de LaCour, offers the innovative application of Swiss craftsmanship through the synchronous reading of two time zones, while its intricate design emulates a balance between tranquillity and ambition. It combines exquisite craftsmanship, elegant aesthetics and uncompromising functionality and features dual time zone and two individual self-winding chronograph movements housed within an oversized bombe elliptical case. The Bichrono DC 241chronograph movements are clearly visible through two separate windows on the case back. It has 37 hours of power reserve each, with blued rotors and engraved balances.

CITY The City range, which was inspired by the curvatures of the human form, displays both strength and elegance, thereby embodying the de LaCour philosophy of duality. The result is a design that is daring and assured, yet elegant and extravagant to suit both males and females.

Bichrono was awarded 2nd in the Best Design category at the venerated Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2003 and winning the Unique Watch Design award in Tokyo the following year.

LEAP de LaCour’s slimmest timepiece, Leap features a sleek silhouette which is available in three distinct sizes. Ideal for the woman who seeks an elegant, unobtrusive timepiece, Leap has a dial

which is a combination of two plates of the finest nacre, one that is extra white to exalt the Roman numerals, and is contrasted by the second plate of deep, rich black. + All images de LaCour stands out as a maker of exclusive timepieces, including the Bichrono, the flagship model for de LaCour; Bitourbillon, a unique timepiece which has a movement with two tourbillions; and the City range, inspired by the curvatures of the human form.

AFFLUENT rocks

FOR A BALL Dior Fine Jewellery has revived the spirit of Monsieur Dior’s couture jewels by turning everything precious.

33

34

AFFLUENT rocks

When Christian Dior created a brand new fine jewellery department in 1998 with Victoire de Castellane as artistic director, it presented fine jewellery described as the ultimate encounter between Haute Couture and Haute Joaillerie. “When I arrived at Dior, I wanted to develop the House themes: Christian Dior’s garden at Milly-laForêt, the couture and the eccentric grand balls,” said Victoire de Castellane. Noting that the designer himself had often adorned his fashion silhouettes in his shows with jewels, Victoire de Castellane took cues from the jewels from the House of Dior. Dior Fine Jewellery collections feature traditional quartet of precious stones – diamond, ruby, emerald and sapphire --which played a discreet role next to the chromatic richness of coloured stones. These gems defined the new proportions of uninhibited jewellery which was recreating a fantasy, dreamlike world, poetic and full of wonderment.

All Images Dior Fine Jewellery brings the woman into the spotlight when it presented the ultimate encounter between Haute Couture and Haute Joaillerie where gems recreate fantasy and a dreamlike world, poetic and full of wonderment.

Using advance technical know-how, excellent workmanship and materials, Dior Fine Jewellery has captivated the attention of collectors and aficionados. Rhinestones were transformed into diamonds, tourmalines, spinels, morganites or aquamarines. The fantasy of a magical wand which turned everything precious; alchemy transforming lead into gold has become a reality. As a great tribute to the excellence of know-how, Dior Fine Jewellery employs the incredible handmade craftsmanship of Parisian ateliers and boasts its success in combining designs that skilfully serve radical thought, a hardliner aesthetic and a true artistic vision. In presenting the Fine Jewellery Collections, it was as if there was artistic dialogue between the legendary designer Christian Dior and its current artistic director Victoire de Castellane. She has reinterpreted many of Dior’s early creations and brought to life his vision. For example, the garden of his home at Milly-la-Forêt has been highlighted in the jewellery collections; sometimes vegetable, sometimes floral

35

and also sometimes of pure invention. Also presented are the rose, Monsieur Dior’s favourite flower, a fond memory dating back to his childhood and the family home on the cliffs above the town of Granville in Normandy. Victoire de Castellane made it into meadow bouquets or diamond paving in colours matching the gold on the shanks of her rings. Interestingly, many of the couture codes are reflected in the jewellery as fine details. These include the idea of the lining of a garment and the special care given to it like, the gold on the rings in the Milly Carnivora collection, where even the invisible parts of the jewel are lacquered, or the little star or little moon engraved under the stone. Also of interest is the jewellery work on the bow, transposed and paved on a satin dog’s collar. Rose petals in sculpted rubellite, where the stone itself is set with rubies and spinels, recall luxuriously embroidered silk taffeta.

As Christian Dior had always been a darling in mega celebrations during his heyday, the theme of the ball is highlighted in the jewellery collections. A privileged guest, his works were often celebrated in many magnificent events. Within the collection, the spirit of the great eccentrics that he attired in fancy dress for those occasions lives on today in the extravagance. + Dior 2 Orchard Turn #02-13 ION Orchard Singapore 238801 Tel: 1800 4159 990

In 2012, the High Jewellery collection named Dear Dior, revived the spirit of Monsieur Dior’s couture jewels in which the back of each one-of-a-kind jewel recaptures the design of the lace on the couture dresses created by Christian Dior in the 50s. The following year, Cher Dior, opened a new chapter that began with Dear Dior and gave precious stones pride of place with the back of the jewels elaborated like dotted embroidery on a veil.

Karl Lagerfeld turns tradition on its head again by transforming a grand architectural dame like Grand Palais into pop-up diner Brasserie Gabrielle for Chanel’s Autumn/Winter 2015 runway presentation. Bon appetit!

Coco Chanel made many things fashionable, including seeing and being seen, especially in the company of other creatives and at the most popular cafes at that. The intellectual and imaginative buzz fuelled her aesthetic sensibilities, enabling the mademoiselle to turn out enduring and endearing emblems for the maison she founded. More than a century on, Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld brought to life the drama and energy that pervaded the Twenties, hence earning for it the associated descriptive, roaring. The Grand Palais, completed in 1900 for the Universal Exhibition and designated as a historical monument in 2000, hosts 40 events and exhibitions every year. Leather seats were installed around booths with tables, while bars were interspersed throughout the vinyl-covered floor. The bars came with tabletops filled with bites like eggs, croissants, pastries, olives and radishes, washed down with coffee, champagne and orange juice.

roomy cardigans, cigarette skirts, flared jeans, woven coats and sheer black cocktail dresses illuminated with woven Lurex or embroidered camellias. Shared Lagerfeld: “No one wears evening coats anymore, so you have to do a jewelled parka instead. One must do the kind of clothes that make sense to a woman in the real world.” The palette was dominated by monochrome but the silhouette was definitely ladylike. Although there was no sign of the then-not-launched Cafe Society gems, Lagerfeld bestowed some with the super-witty Assiete bistro plate clutch. He also shod his maidens in block-heeled slingbacks, an original by Coco herself. “I thought it was the frumpiest, most dated thing. But the eye changes and you start to tweak a style,” admitted the Kaiser. “This shoe made every outfit chic and street-worthy, and all the stilettos and platforms look so old.” +

“This is down-to-earth daily life – in certain circumstances,” explained Lagerfeld, who has helmed Chanel for the past 33 years. As such this was not just another immaculate set, which featured an ensemble of real-life wait staff and beautiful faces. And if Brasserie Gabrielle had a dress code, it must be the most stylish hangout in Paris, if not the world. Cara Delevingne, Kendall Jenner, Joan Smalls, Lindsey Wixon and Liu Wen, clad in one of the season’s finest collections, strolled in and slid behind the tables. The parade was spectacular, with IMAGES COURTESY OF CHANEL | WRITTEN BY MARY LIM

Change is the only constant in a scene as fickle as fashion. Find out how these fresh faces are recharging your favourite labels.

NADEGE VANHEE-CYBULSKI HERMES

ALESSANDRO MICHELE GUCCI “I built my fashion show around the idea of individuality. The way you dress is really the way you feel, the way you live, what you read, your choices. That’s what I want to put into Gucci.” With that, Alessandro Michele was off to an excellent start in his new role at the label where he began as an accessories designer 12 years ago. While his predecessor Frida Giannini created clothes for the glamour-puss, the 42-year-old conceived a gentlewoman’s closet of Seventies-infused vintage finds, including fluid floral-print suits, silk dresses with ruffles, and furtrimmed military coats.

For her maiden runway presentation as creative director at Hermes, Nadege Vanhee-Cybulski, whose resume includes stints at The Row, Celine and Martin Margiela, focused on the things that mattered. For example, a wrap skirt was crafted out of navy leather and silk with the brand’s Sangles motifs. This was paired with a navy silk and cashmere sweater embellished with a brooch of mother of pearl and black agate. It was minimalist yet modern, a premise the 37-year-old lives and loves by. “This collection is very much designed for a real way of life… and I suppose partly that’s my way of life. I don’t want to turn women into gimmicks of stereotypes,” she explains.

PETER COPPING OSCAR DE LA RENTA

When the American designer, whose red carpetconfections have been worn by women like Jackie Kennedy, Amal Clooney and Michelle Obama, succumbed to cancer last October, it was three months away from the Autumn/Winter 2015 runway presentation. British-born Peter Copping, who’d spent five years at Nina Ricci before joining the company, drew on the label’s extensive archives. He knew, like de la Renta, he wanted to dress “a very feminine woman… a rich woman in terms of texture, embroideries mixed with print”. The 55-strong collection he produced was sumptuous and chic, but with a decidedly youthful appeal through shorter hemlines and robust hues like fuchsia and wine.

ANTHONY VACCARELLO VERSUS A favourite among sartorial-savvy types like Jennifer Lopez and Charlotte Gainsbourg, Anthony Vaccarello launched an eponymous label in 2008. His Spring/Summer 2015 capsule collection for Versus left Donatella Versace so impressed, she made him creative director: “Anthony is a natural, and has the confidence and talent to push fashion where he wants it and where it is relevant for today’s women.” And he’s cleverly done so for Autumn/Winter 2015; his mostly black collection featured cutouts, asymmetrical hems and thigh-high slits, but veers towards sleek instead of slutty. “It’s very emotional,” describes the 34-year-old Belgian of the experience. “When you enter that house, you are submerged in the code they create. You cannot not be inspired by it.” IMAGES COURTESY OF RESPECTIVE BRANDS | WRITTEN BY MARY LIM

SKIN TIGHTENING: THERMAGE CPT & ULTHERAPY Third-generation Thermage CPT Treatment employs a patented unipolar radiofrequency technology to safely heat collagen found within the deeper layers of your skin, causing it to contract while promoting new collagen growth. For those looking for a non-invasive multi-dimensional tissue lift, Ultherapy utilises ultrasound to trigger the body’s regenerative natural response, ‘restoring memory’ to the skin and underlying tissue support. The result is a gradual tightening and firming effect that leaves the surface of your skin undisturbed.

REFRESH AND REJUVENATE: KOREAN LASERS Using Korean laser technology, unwanted pigmentation is reduced or removed to produce fairer and more even-toned skin, while also stimulating new collagen growth from within to produce a rejuvenated look and tighter texture. Laser treatments at The Chelsea Clinic can also be administered to address porerelated problems as well as remove moles and tattoos.

ULTRASOUND BODY CONTOURING: LIPOSONIX Got an inch to pinch? LIPOSONIX selectively destroys fat cells in these areas with highintensity focused ultrasound heat, after which the body will naturally clear away fatty cellular debris over a period of 4 – 6 weeks. This non-surgical fat reduction treatment has been developed over a decade of research and testing, and has proven to be highly effective for getting rid of targeted fat around the waistline. Other targeted areas include but are not limited to the abdomen, flanks and thighs.

LIFTING AND TIGHTENING: KOREAN THREAD LIFT (DUO LIFT) Thread Lift, otherwise known as Duo Lift, is a non-surgical procedure from Korea for lifting and firming the face area to produce sleek, elongated facial lines which K-beauty fans recognise as the coveted ‘V-shape effect’. By implanting fine, biodegradable threads into the targeted area, loose and sagging skin is pulled together for a lifted and more youthful appearance.

DEEP HYDRATION: RESTYLANE HYDRA BOOSTERS Those suffering from dry skin will relish the long lasting hydrating effects of Restylane Skinboosters from Sweden, which are used in The Chelsea Clinic’s customised Hydra-Boosters program. A series of microinjections are used to deliver stablised hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural component found in the body, such that the skin is naturally hydrated and smoothed from the inside out for greater elasticity and an alluring ‘post-shower’ glow.

One of the two ships under Award-Winning Crystal Cruises, Crystal Symphony is a dazzling 51,055 tons of luxury magic coveted by discerning travelers around the world. Having just celebrated its silver 25th anniversary, the ship has undergone an intensive $80 million facelift over the last five years alone, keeping true to its namesake as the World’s Best. This architectural masterpiece boasts refined style and cutting-edge technology, with subtle touches of both old world and contemporary luxury at every turn. Notable revamps include a brand new threedeck outdoor fitness garden; stateroom upgrades that boast 48 hypoallergenic PURE staterooms – the first to be found at sea – with medical-grade air purifiers for optimal health and comfort; along with the refreshed Avenue Saloon, one of the ship’s most popular venues, which sports a richly-stylised 19th century gentlemen’s club look and feel. A VERITABLE SANCTUARY A sumptuous home away from home awaits every guest at the Crystal Symphony, with a wealth of amenities available in each of the 461 staterooms inclusive of quality Aveda bath products, 24-hour complimentary in-stateroom dining, and 100% Egyptian cotton sheets. For the ultimate palatial experience, the ship’s largest and only two 982-square-foot Crystal Penthouses will no doubt impress, boasting an elegant living room with custom wool carpets and walnut floors under a Swarovski chandelier, as well as an all-crystal pedestal sink in the powder room. Magnificent ocean views are abounding within these spacious abodes, too; think floor-to-ceiling windows, bedrooms with access to the 178-square-foot verandah, and ocean view bathrooms that offer Philippe Stark Duravit Jacuzzi tubs. The Crystal Penthouses are flanked by 19 Penthouse Suites and 44 Penthouses on the tenth deck, all of which have their own sizeable verandahs, walkin closets and personal butler service unique to the penthouse accommodations alone.

INDULGE WITH EASE You won’t be reaching for your wallet as often to enjoy the most of Crystal Symphony, even for its premium facilities and services. Six all-inclusive dining areas cater to your palate’s every desire, where you can also sip to your heart’s content on complimentary fine wines and premium spirits throughout the ship. Soak in the sun over hot dogs and pizza at the outdoor Trident Bar & Grill, or the Lido Café where daily breakfasts and lunches are served both indoors and alfresco. The Crystal Dining Room offers fine international cuisine along with a world-renowned wine list, while classic Italian dishes can be enjoyed amidst an intimate Venetian atmosphere at the Prego restaurant. SOFITEL SO SINGAPORE LOCAL SENSIBILITIES, FRENCH FLAIR Since its launch in May 2014, Sofitel So Singapore has been making waves among tourists and locals alike, sporting a tasteful blend of fine French elegance, culture and cuisine – all with a twist of playful opulence. Situated in the landmark heritage building of 35 Robinson Road, this relatively new boutique hotel sparkles in all respects with its outstanding service and sensational architectural design, coupled with epicurean and cultural pleasures for a roller coaster of experiential thrills. HIP HERITAGE Guests are immediately transported to the past when met with the hotel façade’s imposing symmetrical columns and spacious balconies, exuding Singapore’s old world colonial charm that is reflective of the building’s 100-year roots. Yet, through its doors lies a world of contemporary French luxury and aesthetics. Sofitel So Singapore beckons with its stylish contemporary interiors, abounding with bespoke elements that sport fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld’s exclusively-designed ‘The Lion’s Seal’ emblem. Its 134 guestrooms, including nine suites, are conceptualised by Singapore-based international design firm Isabelle Miaja. Each feature three-metre high ceilings and hues reminiscent of the city of Paris, creating a rich ambience of 18th century Parisian elegance. Bespoke light boxes are set above the beds to create the illusion of skylights with their renderings of palatial

glass domes, which are inspired by both traditional European architecture and Singapore’s modern constructions alike. OH-SO-SUITE STAYCATIONS The hotel’s immaculate suites bring the experience up a notch, with regal balconies flanked by antiquated columns and overlooking the vast cityscape. Complemented by expansive bathrooms with lavish fittings and bespoke amenities that have been specially designed for the hotel, guests will also find local goodies within the complimentary mini-bars inspired by Singaporean aesthetics. “The vast interiors were extremely striking, and gave off a majestic feeling,” said Paul Tan, Managing Director and Publisher of AFFLUENT magazine, who had the opportunity to spend the night at Sofitel So Singapore’s ‘So Lofty’ Suite.

A TOAST TO TASTE On the dining front, the hotel’s gastro-bar dining establishment, Xperience, brings guests a oneof-a-kind interactive culinary journey of the senses, with menus that can be tailored according to your preferences to suit any mood. A sophisticated combination of international tastes and textures are available to choose from, with cuisine that exudes heavy influences of Mediterranean, Italian and local flavours and techniques. Pairing is also a breeze with an extensive cocktail list and 35 wines by the glass to choose from at the Xperience Bar.

“The bathroom was huge as well – with immaculate attention being paid to spaces designed for him and for her. “But what really impressed me was how Apple gadgets were seamlessly integrated into the hotel’s service functions. We had a LG smart TV in our room – on which you can even order room service – as well as an iPad that could be used to control the lighting and curtains.” Cutting-edge technology is another quintessential aspect of the hotel, in a nod to the innovations of modern Singapore. Expect a fully-customisable Apple-based technology platform, which has been developed in partnership with DirectStreams to fully complete the Sofitel So Singapore experience.

Adds Paul: “If you ever get cravings for authentic Singaporean cuisine at any time of day, you can also satiate them immediately with a sumptuous variety of local food from Lau Pa Sat, which is just outside of the hotel.” To further elevate your stay at Sofitel So Singapore, the hotel’s exclusive rooftop bar, HI-SO, offers a luxurious beach-club ambience with 360-degree views of Singapore’s urban skyline, together with delicious designer cocktails and gourmet bites. Whether you’re basking in cabanas next to Singapore’s only goldentiled swimming pool or grooving to the music under the stars, it’s a ‘So Singapore’ experience that is sure to leave you feeling at the top of the world. + Sofitel So Singapore 35 Robinson Road Singapore 068876 Tel: 6701 6800 www.sofitel.com/So-Singapore

REFLECTIONS

by *Chia Boon Teck

FROM THIRD WORLD TO FIRST IN ONE GENERATION How 50 years have gone in a flash. Let’s reminisce. We started in the 1960s tumultuously. Together with the Malayan leaders, Lee Kuan Yew formed Malaysia on his birthday 16 September 1963. Barely two years later, we were separated from Malaysia on 9 August 1965 without any natural resources. Yusof Ishak became our first President. We were a slum. Many lived in kampongs with wells. Human waste were collected in metal pails which were carried away manually for disposal. Blackouts were not uncommon. The Singapore River stank to high heaven. We started National Service in 1967 with “Hokkien Platoons”. The 1970s saw us with a new President Benjamin Sheares in 1971, and Singapore Airlines was born in 1972. 1973 saw the completion of our beloved National Stadium, home of our Kallang Roar. We witnessed the best years of our participation in the Malaysia Cup with Quah Kim Song and team. We bonded together to help get Singapore on its feet and off the ground. We were introduced to colour television. We chilled out in Yaohan supermarket in Plaza Singapura because it was one of the very few air conditioned places. Singapore became the world’s busiest port in 1979. We then sailed into the 1980s with two Presidents - Devan Nair in 1981 and Wee Kim Wee in 1985. Changi Airport was opened in 1981. Public housing transformed drastically, improving the quality of our lives, making everyone a home owner. Singapore stabilized as a country and busied itself building its economy from every sector. The eastern part of Singapore welcomed Parkway Parade. Centrepoint, Paragon and Wisma Atria took over from Far East Shopping Centre as the “hang out” joint. Singapore ushered in 1990 with a new public transportation system that would change forever the way we commute – the MRT. Changi Airport expanded with the opening of Terminal 2. Goh Chok Tong took over from Lee Kuan Yew as Prime Minister. 1993 saw Ong Teng Cheong as Singapore’s first elected President. Takashimaya rose to become the “big brother” of Orchard Road, and Suntec City started giving Singaporeans an alternative part of Singapore to eat and shop. S R Nathan became Singapore’s second elected President in 1999. The new millennia welcomed Lee Hsien Loong as our third Prime Minister in 2004. Changi Airport opened Terminal 3 in 2008, and was consistently voted as the best airport in the world time and again. So too was Singapore Airlines voted best airline in the world repeatedly. MBS and ION Orchard became Singapore’s iconic tourists magnets, sealing Singapore’s reputation as a shopping paradise. Singapore not only joined the Formula One Grand Prix circuit, it even dethroned Monaco as Formula One’s “crown jewel”. The boom in affluence in Singapore saw a Porsche at every traffic light junction, and Singaporeans became prized by Automobili Lamborghini as its biggest customer in the world. And now in the 2010s – Tony Tan became our third elected President in 2011. As we celebrate SG50 in 2015 with our Botanic Gardens being named as a UNESCO Heritage Site, we pause for a moment to remember Lee Kuan Yew who passed away on 23 March 2015. May I take this opportunity to pay tribute to LKY who made us what we are, and gave us what we have today. Thank you Sir. Cheers to you. *The writer is a lawyer and involved in various social and voluntary organizations.

Audi’s favourite son births a mighty successor.

37

Meant to feel out the market back in 2003, the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept debuted to such rousing acclaim that it yielded Audi’s immediate embarkation on a project of lofty ambitions. Fast-forward to 2007, Audi satiated its exacting following with an emphatic luxury sports offering. As Audi pumped in copious volumes of cash to raise its brand value to challenge Mercedes and BMW, the Audi R8 would be the flagship that made mouths water and spearhead the German brand’s climb to a loftier tier of luxury. Next year, the motoring industry is anticipating the debut of the second generation R8. Audi’s trademark style LED headlights light the future of the carmaker, which will be available with the option of laser addons. The 2016 Audi R8 brandishes a sharper visage;

a sharper look that is a slight departure from the playful appearance of the original R8 of Iron Man movie fame. The elegant steed arrives over 100 pounds lighter than its forerunner, and injected with more power by state-of-the-art engineering. Its V10 variant wields 540hp and 398lb-ft of torque, while its V10 Plus model boasts a whopping 610hp and 413lb-ft of torque. Its new Audi Space Frame is fashioned from lightweight aluminium and carbon-fibre reinforced plastics, featuring B-pillars, a central tunnel and rear firewall tuned to yield optimal agility. Better addressing the engagement of airstreams are enlarged air diffusers, which work in tandem with these new technical innovations to propel the reimagined R8 from zero to hundred in 3.2 seconds.

Its greatly enhanced bespoke programme now allows one to tailor him or herself a unique Audi from the ground up.

38

AFFLUENT moves

Bound for glory next year, the second generation R8 can reach top speeds of above 200mph. Shift its driving mode from ‘Dynamic’ to ‘Performance’ and the graceful charger makes short work of inhospitable road conditions. When not eating up the open road, its driver can switch to ‘Comfort’ mode, which saves fuel and facilitates a smoother ride with premium stabilising technology. The heir to the R8’s legacy bears a similar engine, transmission and aluminium-carbon-fibre chassis to the Lamborghini Huracán, one of the most nimble machines in recent years. Top-grade ceramic brakes and a Quattro all-wheel drive combine forces with a seven-speed S tronic paddle-shift gearbox and an electrohydraulic multi-plate clutch, in a road warrior that is sensing and immediately adaptive.

The choices of two leather packages and at least five upholstery colours give us less reasons to not acquire this elite performer, let alone its greatly enhanced bespoke programme that now allows one to tailor him or herself a unique Audi from the ground up. Gearheads can look forward to an e-tron electric car as well as an R8 LMS GT3 race car, both to be based on the impending 2016 Audi R8. However, the next enthralling offering on the R8’s horizon is the topless R8 Spyder, which is estimated to be unveiled late next year. + Audi Centre Singapore 281 Alexandra Road Singapore 159938 Tel: +65 6566 1111

Bösendorfer’s and Audi’s meeting of minds yields a simple yet meticulous endeavour that drives one to play.

Lauded luxury automotive brand Audi and master piano maker Bösendorfer recently celebrated their emphatic partnership with a stalwart objet d’art. “We had respect for the challenge of making a new design for such a sensitive instrument,” divulged Wolfgang Egger, the design director for Audi who led his Munich team to reimagine Bösendorfer’s iconic grand piano. Egger’s direction with the grand piano has rendered it one of percussion music’s most unique creations. The most attention-grabbing aspect of the new Audi Special Edition Bösendorfer grand is the closed side

grand’s handsome visage. Prop up the main lid with its two-level metal prop stick made of metal, which employs Audi’s aluminum optics, to relish this feat of engineering’s intricate mechanical components.

rim of its base. “It not only lends the instrument unusual presence and stability, it also allows it to project the bass more strongly into the auditorium,” the Audi design team elaborated on the mechanical utility of this off-kilter aesthetic decision. “The liberal surfaces make for a clear shape; there are no ornaments, and the edges and lines are sharply defined. The lid extends optically all the way down to the floor (it integrates seamlessly into the leg). For this complex lid shape, Bösendorfer has developed a custom press mold that is unique in piano manufacturing.” Another acute distinction that sets the aesthetically and functionally improved Bösendorfer grand apart from its contemporaries, is the circular bevelling of the leading edge of its upper case. This prominent swerve in musical design features hinges that have been thoughtfully integrated into the magnificent instrument’s lid, and is coupled by a hydraulically attenuated fall board. Thus, this lower edge of the case directly rises backwards away from the pianist. The graceful sweeping of its sleek curves lead one’s eye back to the stars – the keyboard and the artist – translating his or her emotions into music via this majestic instrument. This truly desirous edition of the Bösendorfer grand differentiates itself by mounting musician, foot pedals and one side of the piano on curved arcs that distribute the rich body of the piano across a thin but sturdy frame. These chrome parts had to be cast instead of bent with heat, by the collaborative team of Audi and Bösendorfer, so as to attain maximum possible strength for the svelte foundations of this grand piano. Heavy-bodied woods and resonant metals were specially chosen to yield an alluring sound that would match the Audi special edition Bösendorfer

Bösendorfer’s rosy partnership with Audi began in 2009 when the musical icon conceptualised a special piano to commemorate the carmaker’s centenary. Audi saw its values reflected in the uncompromising design, innovation and functionality of the twocentury-old Viennese piano manufacturer, resulting in the agreement of a long-term collaboration whose most recent fruit sports the leading sports car brand’s signature hues of grey and white swathing the Audi Special Edition Bösendorfer grand’s cast-iron frame and the damper felts respectively. Ornamentless, except for sparing lettering, Audi intriguingly chose to labour over the “Audi design” lettering too, installing intarsia made of polished stainless steel instead of simply painting these words on – a persevering example that demonstrates the lengths that both design mavens prefer, in order to permeate a minimalist design with sophisticated, user-oriented grace. + Yamaha Music (Asia) Pte Ltd 68 Orchard Road #06-01 Plaza Singapura Tel: +65 6740 9327/9841 www.sg.yamaha.com www.boesendorfer.com Right Peculiar curves unfolding above a slim yet sturdy frame make the Audi Special Edition Bösendorfer grand a unique statement piece.

The Best of Thai

The rich aroma of street food of Bangkok and popular Thai dishes are luring food lovers to Long Chim at Marina Bay Sands.

Long Chim (which means “come and taste” in Thai) is a much welcome addition to the variety of eateries at the Marina Bay Sands. The 150-seat eatery provides a lovely ambience complete with open kitchen concepts to satisfy food lovers who enjoy Thai food. Look out for street art, graffiti, photos and shop house tiles as part of its decor. The best part of this eatery is not only the impressive list of dishes available but also the opportunities to create the buzz by chatting with the Thai chefs and watching them at work, preparing your favourite dishes that are usually found on the streets of Bangkok. Diners have plenty to choose from the menu and it is not unusual to want to try many dishes and this is exactly what many diners enjoy doing. The list for snacks alone includes various dishes for fish, beef, pork and seafood. Several single plate dishes are equally attractive. Must try dishes include grilled lamb curry that goes well with plain rice, grilled fish, green curry of wagyu beef and prawns roasted with vermicelli. They are all so flavourful highlighted by the rich aromas of the herbs and spices used in the dishes. For those who enjoy noodles, the chefs at Long Chim do not disappoint: Enjoy pad thai, stir fried glass noodles and also Chiang Mai curry noodles. In fact noodles of all kinds are available stir fried or served in soup.

Long Chim creates some of the most wonderful Thai desserts and gives us the license to indulge. Highly recommended are Long Chim’s signature banana roti and durian ice cream; there is also the all time favourite sticky rice with mango and coconut cake. Equally attractive is Long Chim’s bar programme – the highlight is Thai inspired cocktails such as Long Chim’s Sticky Rice Sour, made with aged rum, rice wine, fresh mango juice and pandanus and coconut foam. Perrier-Jouet Champagne shows why its latest vintage, the Belle Epoque 2007, representing the art of vintage champagne, is the ideal companion in all celebrations.

The house of Perrier-Jouet Champagne hosted a private dinner at the Lewin Terrace to mark the unveiling of its latest vintage, Perrier-Jouet Belle Epoque 2007. The occasion was graced by Cellar Master Hervé Deschamps who flew in specially for the occasion. He described it as ‘a crystalline vintage whose subtlety and generosity highlight the precision of the PerrierJouët style”. Deschamps who has worked with the House of Perrier-Jouet for more than 32 years pointed out, “It is an epicurean wine. It reflects the Perrier-Jouët Art of Vintage and is the result of a unique and astonishing year, marked by a very mild winter and an exceptional spring,” he said. Served with wasabi crusted sea bass served with risoni of lemon grass, the Perrier-Jouet Belle Epogue 2007 makes ideal pairing with seafood. It also goes well when we were served roasted veal served with battered anchovies.

Guests were also treated to sample some of the best champagnes from the PerrierJouët House of Champagne including its limited edition champagne cuvée Belle Epoque Edition Première 2007, a champagne vintage that is exclusively dedicated to spring. It was paired with delicate scallop served with sauce noilly. Cellar Master Deschamps said, “The Belle Epoque Edition Première cuvée is the unique expression of vintage champagne, one that is to taste exclusively during spring. Floral, stylish and diamond-cut, the champagne echoes the excellence of the Perrier-Jouët terroir and delicacy of the Chardonnay, the House’s elected grape.” The Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Edition Première cuvée is blended from Chardonnay Grands Crus to which a small percentage of Pinot Noir is added, giving this vintage wine a pale pink hue with shades of peach. It was a great companion when paired with seafood and Japanese food, he shared.

Guests also sampled the best of Perrier Jouet during dinner including Perrier Jouet Grand Brut which was paired with salmon marinated with onion confit, sour cream and citron and also Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque Rose 2006 which was served with dessert, peach comported with muscat wine and almonds. + Official website: www.perrier-jouet.com Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Edition Première will be available in limited quantities exclusively through Pernod Ricard Singapore. Opulent

RESPITE

Bonaldo returns with tiny supports, purposeful pleats and a revival of a celebrated icon. A commodity that unfortunately often eludes high-flyers, is rest. The scarce resource that recharges the homeowner when he or she returns to sanctuary, is also that which readies him or her for another ambitious day. Naturally, an investment in the rejuvenating homeware that its owner should look forward to upon retreat, is an investment whose value cannot be questioned. Comfort-oriented designer label Bonaldo rallies behind this exact truism, whose creations are fashioned to ease tensions as much as they are meant to please the eye.

47

THE STRUCTURE SOFA A prodigious collaborator of Bonaldo and a design maven in his own right, Alain Gilles stirs the imagination with his prolific return. The recipient of the Henry Van De Velde Label, the Design for Asia Golden award, the Red Dot Best of the Best award and the Good Design award, recently debuted the Structure Sofa. Seemingly nothing more than a modern couch upon first glance, the Structure Sofa surprises upon closer inspection. Its hefty structure is apparently held up by a few small blocks – a captivating visual orchestrated by the Belgian behind the emphatic Big Table. Named Designer of the Year at the 2012 Interieur Kortrijk Fair, Gilles’ intriguing

living room piece employs studious engineering to distribute the weight of the couch and its guests across a robust metal structure. The design maven presents his Structure Sofa in both fabric and leather, while its tiny legs are available in complementary colours of anthracite grey, white, dove-grey, amaranth, black or green.

AFFLUENT living

THE CUFF Off the cuff elegance comes effortlessly for lauded designer Mauro Liparinni. He exhibits his unimpeachable style sensibilities once again, through the Cuff bed. Endowed with an affluent appearance that can be likened to that of a five-star hotel’s bed, the Cuff is held up by unexpectedly miniscule supports, in the same spirit of the Structure Sofa. Its plush headboard is striped by distinguished pleats, which serve to lead one’s eye down to the allure of the bed. Cushioned with top-grade bedding materials, the Cuff gradually reveals hidden details, such as frog fastening and diligent stitching, upon further examination. Its headboard can be swathed in either fabric or leather, leather of course rendering a handsome contrast, against the soft textures of the bed cover. The Cuff presents a myriad of design options: Its portly legs can be requested in white, anthracite grey, dove-grey, amaranth, black or silver, while the utilitarian home owner might prefer the Cuff’s storage and Comodo storage versions. THE BASKET PLUS Following the warm reception of his Basket, feted Bonaldo collaborator Liparinni reinterpreted his acclaimed bed with a few tweaked details. Expected to sell as well as his freshman attempt at designing a nest-like bed, the Basket Plus inherits the enveloping silhouette of its predecessor’s soft padded headboard. The Basket Plus invokes Liparinni’s newfound penchant for pleats, which streak down the Basket Plus’s headboard, adding to the cup-shaped bed’s inviting aura. While its feet offer options like finishes of silver painted wood and anthracite grey, the Basket Plus also offers the option of being tailored in eco-leather. The “Plus” in its name also emphasises the bed’s capacious storage space, while its variant, the Basket Air, brandishes a design that endows one’s bedroom with a more prevalent feeling of litheness. + www.xzqt.com.sg Keep Abreast of New Ideas & Arrivals! Forever Yours Keuco’s durable and innovative designs continues to win over the luxury homeowners.

Tipped to set design trends this year, Keuco’s new Edition 400 arrives armed with sophisticated details meant to please even homeowners with the most exacting demands. Announced by storied bathroom fittings stalwart Keuco as one of its proudest designcentric efforts, the Edition 400 has also been divulged by the German manufacturer to be dedicated to user-friendliness.

“Innovative ideas, pure design, future orientated technologies – in 2015 Keuco is showcasing a wide range of new possibilities which offer your bathroom design both aesthetic and practical benefits,” elaborated Keuco of its emphatic new endeavour. “With the newly developed Edition 400 bathroom furnishing, a Royal Match universal mirror cabinet and innovative fittings technology, Keuco is pushing

new boundaries in the area of bathroom planning. Our guiding principle of ‘sensual design and purposeful functionality’ is now reflected more than ever across the entire range. By reducing that which is essential, the new products are distinguished by minimalist design and progressive technology. Consequently the bathroom design looks extremely pure and unobtrusive and the everyday functionality seems exceptionally easy.” The designers realising their homeware dreams specified that though focussed on the comfort and luxury of the individual, the Edition 400 series was crafted to appeal to all – singles, couples and families. Each and every piece of the vast collection is stamped with the “Design Plus” seal of quality – Keuco’s personal guarantee of quality and durability of an outing co-produced by design agency Tesseraux + Partner from Potsdam. “Good design is not only defined by formalities. For us, I can say: We do not develop any products for the sake of producing something new, rather we always want to achieve a meaningful improvement,” opined Dominik Tesseraux of the design collective. “Currently we can observe the fact that more and more individual creative freedom is expected, as is the case with architectural products. Interior designers need opportunities in order to be able to design rooms in a more individual manner. The amount of people wishing for a more open and more emotional design language is forever increasing. Authentic materials which also have a haptic quality are taking the place of cool, smooth and laminated surfaces. Solid wood, metal, glass: Different styles are mixed into something unique, something new.”

Page 50 & 51 Drawers brandishing capacious storage spaces open with a gentle touch; Easily adjustable and cost-friendly LED illumination; The lithe and captivating design of the Edition 400’s designs prides itself on functionality and subtle elegance.

Page 49 The Edition 400’s ergonomic designs unprecedentedly blend bath areas into living spaces.

51

A key characteristic of Edition 400 that stands out brazenly is modularity, which can be witnessed along its clean-cut lines and unbroken silhouettes. Sleek handles lead one’s eye to admire the meticulous finishes of its rich panels and inspiring curves, while versatile pieces like its automatically lit Royal Match universal mirror cabinet display not only multifunctionality but also tuck away thoughtful storage spaces that are larger than expected. Passionate about maximising even the smallest of spaces, Keuco and Tesseraux + Partner came up with products like the iLook_move that transform to create capacious room.

Worktops and wash basins of Edition 400 are highly customisable, with the option of brilliant and satin glass fronts, while wall-mounted or standing single and double washbasin solutions can be combined with ceramic basins or even with products from Keuco’s classic Edition 11 or Royal 60 collections. Edition 400’s sculptural marvels extend from highly customisable surfaces, which may can be fashioned from a variety of natural woods or exotic materials, and finished with particular veneers or lacquers according to one’s whim and fancy. Popular Keuco innovations that the Edition 400 retains include ambient LED backlighting, gentle front lighting and drawers that open upon a gentle push. Innovations like the self-controlled mirror heater that prevents misting during hot showers, remind the industry of Keuco’s ceaseless and thoughtful diligence. While the light intensity and light temperature of all its fittings are adjustable, its products also exhibit a sense of thoughtfulness, whether it be the slim yet sturdy docking platforms that safeguard one’s bath accessories, or cabinetry and faucet handles that can be customised for lefthanded individuals. + Artisan Furnishing 71 Kim Yam Road Singapore 239369 Tel: +65 6733 9060 IMAGES COURTESY OF ARTISAN | WRITTEN BY ANDRE FROIS

The Future Of Tradition Historic De Dietrich’s perpetual push forward. A common misconception about luxury appliance manufacturer De Dietrich is that the luxury label is a relatively young player. On the contrary, the wellestablished French enterprise prides itself on a rich heritage that involves accomplishments in multiple fields of engineering and even a knighting, dating back to the 17th century. The De Dietrich legacy began at an iron forge in Strasbourg, France, where Jean Dietrich, son of a rich family of financiers invested in a foundry and ironwork. In 1761, Jean De Dietrich would become a prominent industrialist and was knighted by King Louis XV for his contribution to France. He was called “The King of Iron” in acknowledgement of the cannons and cannonballs that De Dietrich supplied to the French Monarchy.

“King Louis XVI granted official recognition of De Dietrich’s quality ironwork by conferring the hunting horn trademark as a seal of the products’ quality and to prevent counterfeits. It has continued to remain a symbol of quality and excellence over three centuries,” De Dietrich archives recount. From the early 17th century right up to today, De Dietrich has continued to stay ahead of time, building on the brand’s creativity, patents and avant-garde designs. This is evident from the French enterprise’s many successful, exemplary diversifications into various fields over the years. The business originally centered on the ironworking trade, however, over the centuries, De Dietrich expanded into the steel sector, decorative ironwork and railway rolling stock, with

55

fine design and innovative solutions always being the driving factor. In the early 1900s, De Dietrich realised that the pinnacle of its skill lay with engineering kitchen appliances, hence the birth of the world’s first wood and coal oven – the legendary Mertzwiller Oven. The Mertzwiller Cooker embodies the avantgarde position in creativity and innovation, and De Dietrich continues to challenge itself by developing new technologies like the first self-cleaning Pyrolysis Oven, the first Steam Oven, the patented Intelligent Cooking System (ICS), patented Low Temperature cooking programmes that slow cook for enhanced flavour, as well as safe and hassle-free induction cooking systems. A utilitarian brand that continues to modernise today’s culinary industry with patented innovations like the Quattro Dishwasher, and the HoriZonetech Le Piano, which endows one with the freedom of a completely open space cooking zone, De Dietrich persists at the forefront of domestic technology. Its new DOP1597GX pyrolytic oven is a prime example of De Dietrich’s impeccable attention to detail and the unparalleled experience of its engineers. Brandishing 16 cooking functions, booster with residual heat function, automated Eloyse air purifying function (which retains aromas while removing fumes) besides De Dietrich’s pyrolytic cleaning system that

carbonises dirt and grime, this state-of-the-art oven is fitted with hardy and stain-resistant enamelled side racks with adjustable 100 per cent access telescopic railings, an enamelite cavity, as well as De Dietrich’s new Soft Close function – a recent innovation that negates any chance of an oven door slamming, which has created much hubbub in the industry. The smooth and non-stick Lissium baking tray and deep drip tray with grid system are specially designed for baking pastries, and also wield removable quadruple metallised glass panels that enable easy cleaning, as well as a cool door. Temperatures can be fine-tuned down to a single degree via the DOP1597GX’s patented Tactilium fulltouch color sliding menu control panel, which also encourages beginner chefs with a comprehensive cooking guide. + De Dietrich Oxley Bizhub, #02-70 65 Ubi Road One Singapore 408729 Tel +65 6508 4600

Affluent turns its attention to Ledang Heights, where one is at liberty to realise a dream home or make an assured investment. Just a few miles north of SouthEast Asia’s business capital, an imminent property in the famed Iskandar Region of Johor State has been creating quite a buzz with its unique positioning. Ledang Heights is best described as top-end luxury living, themed on state-of-the-art facilities and convenience as well as undiminished tranquility. A key decision-maker of this unprecedented project is Mr. K.C. Tey, formerly General Manager of UEM. Bringing a wealth of experience in the property industry especially in Malaysia’s vaunted Iskandar Region, he has been a key person in Malaysian property development since 1983, as well as developed prominent resorts and bungalows across countries like Canada and

Vietnam. He enthusiastically relays to Affluent about how Ledang Heights will break new ground. Affluent: What is the concept that has spurred on the relentless growth of the Iskandar Region, and how is Bandar Nusajaya unique? K.C. Tey: The Iskandar Region covers an area of 2,217 sq km, which is about 3 1/2 times the size of Singapore, and comprises the whole of the Johor Bahru district and parts of the Pontian and Kota Tinggi Districts. The concept for the development of the Iskandar Region is the Hong Kong/Shenzhen model – bustling financial centre supported by a manufacturing hinterland that can provide cheaper land and labour. It is not meant to compete with Singapore although some peoplewould like to say so.

Bandar Nusajaya was planned to be a world city from day one back in the early 1990s. It is the single largest property development project ever undertaken by any company in the whole of Malaysia. Khazanah/UEM has aggressively and confidently invested large sums of money by building the Second Link together with all the infrastructure leading up to Singapore. Look at the major highways, road networks and other facilities throughout the Iskandar Region. With such aggressive investments and marketing, Khazanah/UEM has successfully brought in many major companies to invest in Iskandar especially Nusajaya. The list of MNCs already in business in Iskandar includes but not limited to: Legoland, Pinewood Studios, BMW, Flextronics, BioX-cell, Capital Land, Gleneagles Hospital, Columbia Asia Hospital, Hello Kitty, Hotel

57

Jen, Double Tree Hilton Hotel, Hershey, Raffles Group, Newcastle University, Southampton University, Marlborough College, Microsoft, Premium Outlets, Country Garden group of China, Greenland of China, R&F of China. The list of Malaysian and Singapore PLCs in Iskandar is growing every day. How did you seek to differentiate Ledang Heights and further position Ledang Heights in a class of its own? Ledang Heights Bungalow Park was planned from day one to be the jewel in the crown of Nusajaya. It is the only bungalow park in Nusajaya, beside the 17-acre lake park with its 5-acre lake and 20 acres of orchard with about 2,000 fruit trees. Ledang Heights is made up exclusively of bungalows. In order to give Ledang Heights the ‘class above the rest’ look and feel, Ledang Heights kept its rolling hills and valleys – this is to distinguish it from the other bungalow developments where you will find rows and rows of flat land and bungalows of almost the same size. Ledang Heights offers you a choice of a nice 8,000sq-ft weekend home to a 32,000sq-ft villa, where you can throw parties or have a celebration for your children. It is also in Ledang Heights where you can build your dream home. Let your imagination run wild by building a dream home that hugs to a hill and looks out over a stream or even the lake or orchard. As a bungalow park, you are allowed to build any sort of bungalow of up to four stories, so long as they comply with our building regulations. You are free to choose any kind of design and use any building materials and equipment you like, including building a green home.

Why has Ledang Heights been so sought after ever since its unveiling? Ledang Heights has been much sought after because it’s a freehold property and foreign ownership is allowed subject to terms and conditions. The prices for bungalows begin from RM3.5 million, inclusive of land, buildings, swimming pool and other amenities. Land prices range from RM120 to 200 per square foot. Its proximity to Singapore – only 10 minutes from Tuas checkpoints. Excellent accessibility – Second link Highway from Tuas checkpoint go all the way to Ledang Heights without even one traffic light. It’s a bungalow park meaning there are only bungalows in Ledang Heights, no apartments, terrace houses, shops or even semi-detached houses. And one has the freedom to design and build his or her own dream house. What was the process of designing one’s dream home in Ledang Heights? The land is already converted to housing and each bungalow lot is already issued with its own titles. The owner needs to engage the relevant consultants to submit the necessary building plans. Upon approval of the building plan, construction can commence. Installation of sewerage, electricity, water, telecommunications and roads have already been completed. What amenities does Ledang Heights offer, and what conveniences are nearby Ledang Heights? The Ledang Urban Retreat (clubhouse with spa, a well-equipped fitness centre, a 50-metre lap pool, meeting and seminar rooms, karaoke lounge and F&B outlets),

Legoland, Mydin (Supermarket), Puteri Harbour, Poresia Golf & Country Club, Horizons Golf Resort, Newcastle University, Malborough College Malaysia, University of Southampton Malaysia, Gleneagles Medini (under construction), Columbia Asia Hospital (in operation) and REAL kindergartens/ schools. Why is the value of Ledang Heights predicted to rise? Ledang Heights is the only bungalow park in the region. There are only 571 bungalow lots and 30 per cent have already been built and the supply of the bungalow lots is limited. As more are sold, the supply is reduced. Freehold landed properties in Singapore are very expensive. Therefore Ledang Heights is a very good alternative. + DHSLAND sdn.bhd (778861-D) Suite 10-09, Level 10, Johor Bahru City Square (Oce Tower), 106-108, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, 80000 Johor bahru Johor, Malaysia

Arete Culture frontwoman CAROLINE CHIN GEYLER speaks exclusively with Affluent to address the buzz surrounding her Berkshire Road project.

Established in 2010, Arete Culture has been garnering increasing recognition because of its unique specialisation in fast, affordable and fuss-free home makeovers. Spearheaded by Director and Head Stylist Caroline Chin Geyler, Arete Culture is described by Caroline as a firm that believes in creating beautiful and functional spaces that clients can feel at home in. All her projects are completed within two days – most of her projects are completed within an afternoon. A flexible business that has displayed its immense capabilities with a wide array of bespoke options, Arete Culture also has a retail arm that sources soft furnishings from all around the world, and has recently been in the limelight because of its emphatic Berkshire Road project. With the public yearning for a peek into this enthralling aesthetic endeavour, Caroline agreed to divulge how she sought to endow the Berkshire Road home with a truly unforgettable transformation. MORE THAN A BLACK AND WHITE JOB “The family living in the house had been there for slightly over a decade, and while they had tried to

make their house work, they had hit a brick wall,” recounts amiable Caroline about her Berkshire assignment. “The brief was to use colour to enliven the space. They had beautiful key pieces – large pieces of furniture – and plenty of Asian antiques, art, and collectibles to work with, but their current look was dated and too heavy. The challenge for this project was bringing together what they had and making older-era pieces work with more modern silhouettes and colours. It wasn’t just about bringing colour to the space; it was about creating an elegant and spacious feel while working with many of the older pieces.” She further elaborates that this particular job was a dream project for Arete Culture due to the complete creative freedom the client afforded the firm. After the first home visit, Caroline came up with a mood board showing how they envisioned the space while incorporating existing furniture. “We began with preselecting fabrics and carpets for the space. We focused on transforming the following areas: foyers; fining area, lounge, master bedroom; outdoor entertainment deck, and the hallways. The timeline for the entire project was only five days as the client wanted her

67

home ready for an upcoming party. We saw the home on a Friday and came up with a proposal on Saturday – she confirmed the project two hours after submission. The physical transformation of the entire home was done within just one day.” Possessing a sharp eye for detail, Caroline first identified the bedroom as being too big and lacking in visual cohesion. She recounts that the original layout of the living room was too dark, dated and heavy with too many heavy Asian keepsakes, while sharing that the owners hated the pieces on display in the dining room and did not know how to rework it, and that the outdoor areas had lots of space with colourful pieces, but also did not come together. RED BRICK REBIRTH “We used carpets, lighting, modern furnishings, and luxe textures to lift the heaviness of the spaces outlined above. We also utilised a clear colour palette to tie all the

spaces in the home together,” she divulges about the metamorphosis. “My favourite rooms are the bedroom and the dining room. I’ve always loved designing bedrooms as they remind me of being on holiday and having a tranquil space to escape to. I always try to recreate the feel of plush, private hotel bedrooms when making over homes. I also love the drama of the dining room, especially the textural contrasts and symmetrical arrangement of the room. As we speak the dining chairs are being recovered in a printed fabric to further elevate the drama of this entertainment area.” Caroline shares that clients who approach Arete Culture request a variety of different styles. Some want their space to be beach-house or resort-inspired, while others are inclined to a more masculine palette or a modern home. Having worked on many contemporary-classic-style homes, Caroline reveals that traditional looks that are updated with today’s

As a purveyor of modern trends who also finds inspiration from the old, Caroline has successfully built a reputation for helping clients update their homes while retaining a classic edge. Her team prides itself on being able to pull together a look in a cohesive manner, but still ensure that all the components are practical and suited to their clients’ lifestyles. She shares that budget is always central in any project, but also shares that decorating does not have to be lavishly expensive. “We always prioritise affordability when it comes to styling,” she remarks. “The styling process is meant to be easy for the client. A lot of prep work is done on our end to ensure that the actual, physical transformation doesn’t inconvenience the client. We don’t style and decorate over weeks or months - we always complete our projects within two days, although even more often within an afternoon. The point of engaging our services is so the client can get expert direction and be at ease while we do all the hard work. That’s something we take very seriously.”

trends are the biggest hit with her patrons. “What most people are looking for is a space to relax in – they want a clean look that will make a space look spacious, elegant and inviting. I have my personal, signature decorating style but this is definitely not something I impose on clients. With every makeover project, the focus is on what the client wants and how they use a space. We always decorate with functionality in mind,” she comments. CHARACTERISTIC OF CULTURE “My personal style is very much about drama. I love the glamour of Old Hollywood and I’m drawn to Art Deco details. It’s all about mirrored accents, lacquer and rich textural detail like velvet and fringe of the Hollywood Regency. I would also say I’m very influenced by my travels – I travel all the time and love exploring new places and their interiors. When I first started designing Arete Culture’s Luxe Hotel Collection – our in-house line of soft furnishings – I looked to the different boutique hotels I’ve stayed in for inspiration.”

69

MOVING ON UP Caroline is elated that her labours of love have lifted her company to a new milestone – she will be opening her second showroom at Tan Boon Liat in late August. She shares that a major factor that drew her to do business in this niche sector, was the major shortage of one-stop shops in Singapore that provide high quality but well-priced accessories. In late 2014, she took on the challenge of catering to that need and designed an in-house collection of customisable soft furnishings, such as cushion covers and table runners, table centerpieces, affordable artwork, lamps and customisable lampshades. Her collection grew over the past year to include customisable handmade carpets, silk duvets and even smaller pieces of furniture, like chaise lounges and ottomans. “Our Tan Boon Liat showroom will have a counter catering to requests for customisation as we realised this is something many people look for to really make their home their own,” she enthuses about her newest

venture. “Styling is not all about glamour. I love what I do, but my job is definitely not glamorous. There’s a lot of hard work and physical labour involved in the process. When we’re not out sourcing products to use, we’re settling paperwork or moving furniture. My job is to ensure that clients are able to move into the space immediately, so we clean before and after moving things around. At work I am often found climbing up ladders to style the top of tall cabinets or on my knees cleaning underneath beds and sofas,” she discloses of the labours that come with her impassioned occupation. + Arete Culture Lam Soon Building 63 Hillview Avenue, #09-08 Singapore 669569 Tel: +65 6310 8098
