“So who am I? An alien I’d say! An elongated, slender, melanin rich, androgynous feline!”
6 afi
Where did your interest in modelling begin? I was first introduced into fashion from home. I grew up watching my mum make and sell traditional Ugandan clothes, as well as my sister who followed in her footsteps studying Fashion Design. Frequently acting as their mannequin, as well as being told by many I came across that I should be a model, aroused my curiosity. Did that curiosity/interest lead you anywhere? I was 13 years old when I first took part in a fashion show- it was for my sisters’ final year, where I walked for her and several other students. I was nervous at first, but after the first walk there was so much adrenaline running through me- from the rush and chaos backstage, to the poker face on the catwalk! It was over before I knew it, which saddened me, I wasn’t ready to let go of this feeling it gave me; it was then that I began my pursuit for a chaotic and exciting career in fashion! What did you hope for in the pursuit of becoming a model? I once dreamt of becoming a Victoria Secret Model, I guess that was the ‘me’ before accepting self (which is still an on-going journey)- the idea that if I’d reached Kaiyo wears: (above) Bandage button side swimsuit: PRETTY LITTLE THING, Georgie Sunglasses: HOT FUTURES, Art Deco grid circ disc loop earrings: KASTUR JEWELS

feel like I have been able to follow my dreams, my journey has lead me to Monaco, Milan. Paris, Rome as well as my home London. Unexpectedly, I crossed paths with an agent, who believed there was a place for me. My journey with Alacarte Model Management has helped me to grow personally and professionally. I am able to see the beauty within myself, which is defined by a combination of qualities and not just that of the exterior. Have you always been bald? No, I haven’t! I’ve always struggled with my appearance, frequently pondering over questions surrounding my colour, physique and hair. Through TV, Magazines, as well as, Disney movies or books, I could never find another individual to compare myself to. And I guess through those media platforms, began this self-hate and longing to be somebody else.

that runway, I would have reached the epitome of what they call beauty. But I don’t fit into that ticked box, not everybody does, and that doesn’t make you any less if that’s the case. Did you follow your dreams in the end? I knocked on a few agency doors when I was a teenager, and they all slammed in my face! Once I cut my hair off I felt like a walking spotlight, I had no clue what people were thinking and still don’t know but what I do know is that I capture peoples attention. Through persistence however, I

I remember every time my hair was taken out of plaits, I would do these tests; the shake test- had my hair grown long enough to sway in a left and right motion as not only European women on TV but also as African American women? And; the hairband testI would tie my hair upwards to check if my hair had grown long enough to exceed the hairband, to be able to rock a ponytail, if so I was closer to my desires of longer flowing hair, if not there was a painful, ugly feeling inside, but all the same I was hopeful for the next time. Fast forward into my adolescence, I frequently wore extensions, an extension of my hair that became apart of who I was and the closest I’ll ever get to the hair (and person) I ever so desired. I didn’t look after my hair and it began to break, so I continued to use extensions to cover the breakage, which further broke it!

So what did you do? I later on found myself taking part in a beauty pageant, where one of the girls in the pageant inspired me, each time I saw her, I thought, she has a beautiful face, she looks happy and confident and furthermore her lack of hair hasn’t shied her away from taking part in such a competition. I asked myself, what am I hiding from, my heritage? Who are you trying to be? Why are you not enough? What are you scared of? No matter how hard you’ve tried to fit in to this idea of perfection, you’ve always been and will always be different, so why not stand properly in the light of difference and be your own truth? Free yourself! Let go and live for you. And so I did! What kind of modelling do you enjoy most? I enjoy the catwalk; although I still cant seem to get my heart rate to slow down! But I enjoy shoots the most, especially location shoots. I guess as I mentioned when I was younger I was seeking a chaotic exciting ride, and it’s a much longer ride than that of a catwalk. There’s something about it where I can be free, move, explore space, express different emotion, portray a character and build a connection, not just with the team but also with those that get to see. So what are your dreams now? I hope to be a face, a face of a brand that celebrates individualism. To inspire others to be their best self. To know that barriers can be broken or at least that accomplishments can be made no matter how big or small, and that should be celebrated. We all have our own paths and are destined to pursue our own journeys, that being said, not everybody will
succeed in achieving the level of success they chose to pursue. Some of us just don’t have the conviction to turn dreams to reality simply because we don’t believe in it. That cannot and should not be your default point. In saying that, my expectations are to reach at least a few individuals and inspire them to stand proudly in their light, that’s enough for me. They say a picture paints a thousand words and that is to be said amongst individuals. In fashion, some see a paragraph, whilst others see lines. I look forward to those I’m able to connect and create a story with, all whilst living out a dream I never thought possible.

What’s it like being a model and a mother?
12 afi
My daughter was a blessing. her birth uncovered the darkness I suppressed within, which forced me to not only face it but also find the light she knew hid beneath. In the early years of motherhood becoming a model was an erased dream, I’d been faced with dealing with my troubles, my body had changed and it just seemed something impossible to start such a career when a family had already fallen into play. But impossible is nothing as the saying goes, my journey was just
written differently for personal reasons I had to first overcome to become the person and model I stand to be today. I’ve found that the chaotic exciting ride I was longing for, as a teenager, was actually to be an exciting unveiling of my chaos through fashion. On walks home with my daughter from school, she’s mentioned a few times that her friends have asked why her mother has no hair, I say because I am free, I am free to portray myself in the way I please, because my hair does not define me, and

I believe in my character they are able to see that my appearance does not make me less a good person than the next. Some of us are not dealt the best hand in life, but as in the game, that can always be turned around, it may be tricky, but taking your time in planning your next move, will lead you to where you choose to be. You may not get it the first time, but as the sun rises each day, we are given another chance in making that hand/next hand count.
Your social media name” - Kaiyo UNcovered, what does it mean? As touched upon briefly, I’ve always struggled growing up with my identity. I could never comfortably place myself into a specific group- too dark skinned and ‘skinny’ for my own race, too Western for a Ugandan household, with coils so tight that I couldn’t pass for a European! So who am I? An alien I’d say! An elongated, slender, melanin rich, androgynous feline! Ha-ha. I often

find myself constantly in a battle with/ fighting against the demons that rest in my mind, where fear, acceptance and painful stories lie, yet somehow I manage to channel an angel through my exterior, where determination, wisdom and joy exist. I have accepted that I am not perfect, I am not for everyone, and although I may fall several times, I am worthy of a great life, and I am no longer afraid of my journey. I am a phoenix, who will keep rising from the ashes, and each time I will learn more about myself, I will become stronger, and my destination will become clearer. What are your hobbies/interests outside of modelling?
“I am no longer afraid of my journey. I am a phoenix, who will keep rising from the ashes...”

I spent my late teenage years in a toxic relationship, which caused me to lose the person I had built, despite my struggles as a child to adolescence. Through my journey of rediscovery, I’ve taken interest in; reading, from fiction to spiritual and philosophical books; writing, exploring deep thoughts to poetry; singing; drawing, I sketch quite randomly, but animals seem to be a common denominator, especially birds- there’s a calm and relaxation it offers/provides me and; meditation, as well as yoga to keep me fit and mindful.

BLACK SANDS OF SANTORINI
Bikini – Echoing the surroundings on the beach we’ve opted for this bandeau bikini from Clube Bossa. You have come a long way from being scouted to being on multi international publications. What was your key to success in your modelling career? I believe being able to convey a good attitude and finding the right creative people to vibe with have been the key to getting as far as I have. What was the biggest learning curve for you as a model? That modelling is so much more than just standing in front of a camera. You have to learn posing, facial expressions, angles, how to highlight and accentuate clothing, how to a voice to the look a photographer or art director may want. Can you tell us your most memorable modelling experience? I ended up traveling to the Bahamas for a shoot with Maxim France and immediately turned around to get on a plane to fly out to South Africa to shoot a generosity water campaign worth 10k that I had been flown out for. They had me do this amazing shoot with a Cheetah which is one part terrifying and one part exhilarating! You have done some stunning swimwear shoots. Any posing tips or other tips for models doing swim shoots? Be aware of your body. What highlights and what downplays. Angles are your best friend. Don’t get tense. Be out there having fun on your shoot. It’ll show in the final photos! Your dad was a model right? My dad was the coolest person in the world and I wanted to model just like him. We used to play dress up with his model friends and they’d bling me out on all kinds of faux pearls and just jewelry and style me in outfits (far too big on me) fastening then to me with a long belt and I would rehearse my catwalk with them. It was like the ultimate dress up. Has your dad given you any modelling advice? My dad told me to never let anyone convince or discourage me from the path I was on. As I’ve gotten older, he couldn’t have been more right! I do remember the first time I told him I wanted to be a model and he said, “You’re not going to be a model, you’re smart like your mom!” Obviously you know which path I went on. How would you explain your fashion style and what items in your closet can you not be without. My style varies from fancy wifey to homeless chic, I love playing dress up and feeling girly but I always don’t want to be robbed so that’s my look What were your prior experiences in the fashion industry before you started your own athletic brand “Neon Beige”? Outside of modelling, I hadn’t any previous experience.
afi 55
It was when I went to business school did I see a hole in the fashion industry for cute atheisure wear. I found myself asking why all the clothing women wear were being designed by men who didn’t really understand what a woman wants to look and feel like. How do you manage your brand, your modelling, stand-up comedy AND looking after your two dogs? Do you get any time for yourself? Don’t forget time to travel. I don’t consider myself a balanced person and when I get excited by a project, by my work, I just work tirelessly on it. I block off days designated to shoots, design, or comedy. I just keep going because I don’t know what else I should be doing! I wouldn’t recommend that for everyone but this is the path that works for me. As a standup comedian, what topics would you be open to use as material? What topics would be considered off limits? I limited my jokes to my slanted point of view and observational humour, food jokes and kind of my favourite though. In general I stay away from politics, huge social movements like “why me” or whatever it’s called, and obviously still too soon for holocaust jokes. Apart from spending time with your dogs, what do you like to do on your down time? I gave up my place in LA and decided I was going to spend my time traveling when I wasn’t working. I haven’t regretted that decision!

We sat down with Sophie, the Founder of Avenue Publicity to talk about all that glitters and what it’s like founding and running a jewellery PR agency - single handedly
Hi Sophie can you tell us a bit about yourself? Jewellery obsessed, constantly stressed and vodka drinking pest!! I work hard to achieve my dreams, love my job but also try hard to keep work / life balance. In the last year I’ve bought my first house and got married so it’s been quite intense alongside running Avenue Publicity, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! Once I put my mind to something that’s it! You were very young when you started Avenue Publicity; what made you decide on a jewellery PR agency rather than fashion or beauty? I’d previously worked with a mix of fashion and beauty but my passion was always with jewellery and I thought it would be great to specialise in one area. If ever I were to treat myself, I would always opt for jewellery over anything else. I originally studied in art and design and I love the creative element of jewellery; something so small yet every piece is so unique. I love the fact I also work with both fashion and fine jewellery; something for everyone’s budget. What’s it like running Avenue Publicity on your own? It’s tough I won’t lie! Being a one man band is hard for anybody. If you’re stressed or worried you can’t share that burden. I’m very fortunate that I have an extremely supportive husband, family and friends who share my experiences with me through the good times and the bad.
What is the role of a jewellery PR Agency? To put it most simply; to help grow and build a brand. We place them in publications, on celebrities to gain awareness and in turn grow sales for a brand. However, as Avenue Publicity is a small agency, I also become a team member and an additional support unit for clients… it’s so nice to be able to share experiences with them and empower independent designers. What’s your personal jewellery style? With fashion jewellery, I tend to opt for big, bold, statement pieces that stand out or have an arty /architectural twist. For fine jewellery, it’s all about the detail, great design and it has to be meaningful. When spending a larger sum, the piece has to have a story and be something completely unique from anything I’ve seen before! What have been your biggest win’s on your journey so far? That’s a toughie… there have been so many incredible moments, I still get excited about each and every piece of coverage I secure! A few memorable moments include celebrity placements on the likes of Rita Ora, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, Ella Eyre, Ellie Goulding and most recently Madonna. In terms of print, I still remember my first ever piece of coverage in VOGUE (I had tobuy a few copies of that one!) As well as my first piece of printed coverage in the US (Marie Claire) to seeing several editorials in print dominated by my clients jewellery throughout, or whenever there’s a stunning image where

the jewels really visible! There have been digital designer profile stories for clients across the likes of Vogue. co.uk, InStyle and Wallpaper*. Every time we make print I have to go out and buy the papers and magazines; the ever-growing stack is getting a bit too much now! I’m in the process of trying to narrow down my favourites to frame for the office right now!
more flexibility and giving them room to be a little more creative.
Overall, a lot of highs and I love the moment I get to share the coverage with clients and directly see how much it means to them!
When the time is right, seek out and get in touch… we don’t bite! I think a lot of brands worry they aren’t established enough or won’t have the budget, but there is so much diversity between agencies. There are many incredible PR agencies out there doing a great job and I can imagine it would be difficult for a brand to choose the right fit, as for a lot of brands it’s an area they don’t know a huge amount about. Whoever you sign up with, get as much information beforehand so you know what to expect. Unfortunately, there is never any guarantee with the nature of PR but you need to believe and have trust in the person pushing your brand out for you.
What do you look for in a new client? Firstly, it needs to be jewellery I like, but importantly; jewellery I can see press showing an interest it. I would never just work a brand just for the money. It would need to be a brand I personally believe in or there really wouldn’t be much point! So first and foremost, exciting and unique designs! What is your opinion on influencer marketing – is it too saturated or is there still marketing opportunity if done correctly? Influencer marketing is great and it provides an accessible platform for brands to grow to the next level, however, my concern is so many influencers come with a very hefty fee, and with all the paid promotions, it’s hard to know if the influencer has a genuine like for the pieces. The fashion industry continues to work within traditional print coverage; how do you work with your clients to advise the right mix of media? With the rapid development of technology and ever-increasing use of social media and digital platforms, it is worry that print publications will continue to struggle as they face a continuing decline in circulation. In my opinion, nothing beats sitting down and actually flicking through a magazine in print (when I have the time!) I know for designers, they still love to see their pieces in print and be able to go out and buy the publication. So many editors and stylists are increasingly going freelance, also giving them

With the changing nature of the industry it’s important to work with more freelancers, up-and-coming digital publications and influencers. What is your advice for brands seeking PR?
Where do you see the future of Avenue Publicity? I love what I’m doing right now and hope to just continue getting to work with the incredible brands I do. I am constantly trying to build my network, relationships and just grow Avenue Publicity. It would be nice to one day have a small team and grow a little larger; but I love the boutique element of Avenue Publicity and never want to lose that.
