editor's Note 2 years has passed since we started Afi and what a journey it has been! One of the highlights for me over the last year was having fashion stylist, Stef join our team as our fashion editor. She has produced amazing styling for our in-house shoots and continues to give us tons of inspiration for each issue. And now, Im excited to announce that we will have an amazing and talented makeup artist, Luciana Petrossian who will join us as our beauty editor. We chose to have a retro theme for this issue to celebrate the past 2 years of Afi, but also as we know, fashion trends repeat itself in cycles. It becomes quite interesting to see how designers, stylists, makeup artists and photographers put a twist to revive past trends and give it a modern look. The process of putting something new with the old to create a totally different look really becomes an art. So here, we have the privilege to share with you the works from some very creative people. From retro fashion on retro tennis court shot by Rebecca Elliott to glitzy vintage glamour by Constantinos Lepouris, and of course not to forget to mention the retro bohemian city party produced by our very own in-house team. Lastly, Stef gives us a round up on our recent venture at the London Fashion Week in September looking at all the gorgeous SS19 collections! We hope you enjoy this issue!

PRINT N MIX
With the transition to a colder climate in full swing, our summer palette has faded into a haze of rich caramels, oranges, and warm neutrals. This season is all about the balanced mixture of prints and textures. It’s no secret that animal print is in full force this season, but don’t neglect the possibility of including autumnal florals, stripes, and checks galore while experimenting with different textures; think printed leathers, crushed velvets, jacquard prints and chunky knits. The trick to combining them all together in a cohesive look is to stick to one colour palette and run throughout. That way you won’t look like you got in a fight with your wardrobe!

Events
London Fashion Week SS19 All eyes turn to London as the home of creativity, diversity, innovation and rich-culture kicks off its by Stef Carter 68th London Fashion Week
T
here was no shortage of special events this season, as industry and fashionistas sat at the edge of their seats awaiting the unveiling of Victoria Beckham’s 10th anniversary collection being debued in London for the first time. Mary Kantrantzou also exhibited her 10th Anniversary collection, showing how far the label has come since her beginnings of making simple, yet stunningly beautiful shift dresses. Quite possibly, most anticipated of all, was the debut collection from Ricardo Tisci at Burberry. If you’re wondering why there is such a hype over the six day industry event, to put it into perspective; the fashion industry contributes £32bn to the British economy – and there has been a 5.4% increase vs 2017 even with the uncertainty of Brexit. The fashion industry is responsible for 890,000 jobs – so underneath the glitz and glamour of this trade show, lies a critical element to the British and global economy. My first show of the season was a sea of energetic brights and playful prints at Nicopanda. Formichetti has long been associated with streetwear and party culture, and walking into the dark showspace that was only illuminated by giant disco balls, was indication of the type of collection we were about to witness. Think late nineties ravers, clashing prints, cowboy hats, lots of leopard print, sequins galore and the essence being fun and tongue in cheek playfulness. Within the collection there were some great RTW pieces; my personal favourite was a bright pink ruffle hem dress, which had repeated prints of old Polaroid images of Drag Queen Divine.

I’m also partial to the long tulle phone case for when I’m feeling particularly extra. (Left) NICOPANDA Launched in 2015, the New York based street- brand is best known for its edgy and playful approach to ready-to-wear and accessories.
In complete contrast, next on the agenda was a presentation by Xu Zhi. In the wooden clad, gothic halls of 2 Temple Place, lay a sixteen piece collection inspired by the famed American poet Emily Dickinson. Much like the poet’s work, the collection was romantic at heart but in an unconventional way. Whilst the collection housed elegant soft dresses, there were also

suits, and strong edgy tailoring to echo the element of strength in Dickinson’s writing. Missing are different patterns and prints in the collection, instead replaced with the most rich and sensuous textures and fabrics which can only be truly appreciated in the presentation structure. I feel the collection was a perfect balance of 1920’s styled garments, sitting alongside a more contemporary selection of suits, shirts and trench coats. The showstopper piece was a strapless scarlet evening gown with a full fringe skirt; it was a mesmerising piece, the more you admired the gown, the more the deep texture of the skirt pulled you in in adoration. Another first this season, was the first Spring Summer collection from Johnston’s Of Elgin. The presentation was held in the Palm Court of The Waldorf Hilton Hotel and huge crowds of industry flocked to see the collection; notably Hamish Bowles. The brand famed for its use of cashmere and detailed tailoring, showcased a 20 piece collection formed of new cutting-edge lightweight fabrications, demonstrating that the brand can easily adapt their signature designs for the warmer seasons. Normal Spring pastels were

amplified into bright canary yellows, deep rich purples, cerise, and pops of lime green. True to the brand, the collection exudes sophisticated modern silhouettes, whilst most importantly remaining comfortable and wearable. My favourite pieces were the voluptuous billowing dresses that exuded comfort and airiness that came in the dreamiest summer shades; and in contrast I fell in love with a two piece pyjama style set with the most delectable repeating pattern. A designer I have watched with intent over the past few seasons, is Cassey Gan. This season the designer was inspired by David Hockney, which was reflected in the vibrant use of colour and texturized prints. The clever use of colour meant that each garment was interchangeable with the next, and it made for a spectacular runway. What I love about Cassey Gan, is the aspect of inclusivity. The garments come in a variety of sizes, the models are always diverse, which is also a nod to the diverse background in which she was raised. One thing for sure, is the label has a very distinctive style, the clashing unique prints are instantly recognisable, but the beauty of this collection is that it is entirely wearable. From the structured yet flowing floor length dresses, to tunics and cropped trousers, it’s safe to say there is a piece for everyone to love.

“The sexy feminine silhouettes were crafted from the lightest and most delicate fabrics that added to the dream like setting” 20 afi
A short stroll from the Freemason’s Hall was the venue for our next presentation; Markus Lupfer in the Lancaster Room in Somerset House. We were transported to a beachside paradise, where in-between the sand and reeds stood prominent models in Lupfer’s Spring/Summer offerings. This was easily one of my highlights this season. The sexy feminine silhouettes were crafted from the lightest and most delicate fabrics, that added to the dream like setting. Sweet pastels were displayed against tender prints, delicate pleats and compelling sequins. I would be hard pushed to pick a favourite look, in fact I’ve cleared a space in a wardrobe ready to bring the whole collection home. Well the presentation was about dreaming right? Having a break from looking at clothes, I headed to see the S.Novio collection and met designer Snowy Li where she explained the inspiration behind the label. “Novio” is latin for boyfriend, and these shoes are designed to be exactly like the boyfriend of your dreams. To keep you warm, protected, and most of all to give you comfort. All of the shoes are designed to take you from day to night, for the career driven woman focused on pursuing her goals. The S/S collection included some outstanding gladiator sandals adorned with Swarovski
jewels; from their aptly names “Goddess” collection. Even the brands signature collection was as lust worthy as the jewelled numbers; in particular their “Cosita” flat which I instantly fell in love with. The sleek velvet pointed flat had the biggest bow I’ve ever seen on a shoe, and honestly, it was love at first sight. Throughout the collections, the common theme of jewelled details and classic design have set this brand on course to be every woman’s go to shoe brand.

One of the shows I most look forward to season after season, is Malan Breton. Having started his early fashion career as a stylist to the likes of Kylie Minogue, Celine Dion and Linda Evangelista, it was a natural progression to start his own line. Whilst he may not be a household name outside of those in British fashion industry; he has an impressive line of accolades for his design work, has had his own TV show, and has costumed some of the most high profile TV shows. As we sat in anticipation in the Vestibule of the Freemason Hall, suddenly the lights turned on and the 60 piece collection began to grace the runway. The collection was inspired by the Ziegfeld Follies; which was a series of elaborate theatrical revue productions on Broadway. “The chorus girls elegantly paraded up and down stairs, costumed across the inspirational “Each garment spectrum, from exotic birds of paradise, to powerful and imposstood as an indiing battleships.” The piece that vidual piece, but opened the show embodied exact- collectively made ly that, a yellow gold jacquard suit for an incredible with bright yellow feathers at the shoulders, and from that moment display of Breton’s creative I knew this was going to be a highbrilliance” light this season. all; alluring prints against an array of metallics, strong sexy leather corsets, sequins, tuxedos, billowing organza ballgowns, the list really is quite endless. Each garment stood as an individual piece, but collectively made for an incredible display of Breton’s creative brilliance. My favourites? Leather yellow trench coat with a giant bow, yellow leather corset with a tartan train, and the metallic sequin suit with an enormous cape. As you can tell my style is akin to a wallflower. Veteran of London Fashion Week, designer Paul Costelloe never fails to disappoint and this season was no exception. It was the first show of day four and I couldn’t have asked for a better opening to my day. Costelloe typically played with voluminous dresses, complete with layers, and explored different fabric prints which were heavier than we have seen before. The models coiffured hair, big shoulder detail and fishnet socks were a nod to 80’s nostalgia. The collection included his signature ballgowns, with the addition of relaxed loungewear, sharp tailored blazers, mini cocktail dresses, there was even the inclusion of latex bubblegum leotards. It was a delightful mix of wearable pieces and signature fishtail gowns.
Making their first debut in London, was Korean designer Seung-Gun Park who is behind the label PushBUTTON. A label I was not familiar with, but left being a fan. Another designer who gave a firm nod to the 80’s with the most egaggerated shoulders you’ve ever seen. Some of the looks were reminiscent of the cool kid at school that everyone wanted to look like, it was effortless and yet the collection was impactful. The designer noted he was extremely nervous about his first international show, but the accolades following the runway, are well deserved and it’s a brand that is firmly on my radar.

Picked as a designer to watch this season, Wesley Hariott presented his collection entitled “You Can (Not) Be Everything” which was a product of a series of conversations held with female friends, where they described the process of getting ready in the morning. They wanted to be “sexy, but not too sexy, powerful, but not over the top.” From these conversations was formed a strong female empowered collection, with garments constructed to serve women as opposed to conform to social expectations. A beautiful collection and demonstration of pushing the boundary type creativity that London is best known for.

“It was risqué, outlandish, and had a plethora of celebrity figures walking the runway”
24 afi
Without fail, every season there is an enormous buzz around the Pam Hogg show. The celebrity studded front row, (Rose McGowan, Brooklyn Beckham, Tim Cook) and hype that surrounds the woman herself, sadly often leaves crowds disappointed as this show reaches capacity, fast. The show is everything you have come to expect from the renowned 80’s designer; it was risqué, outlandish, and had a plethora of celebrity figures walking the runway but it was a softer show than what we have seen from previous collections. The tulle creations Hogg is famed for were in much softer pastels and had been given a delicate feminine touch. Amongst the theatrical garments were a number of wearable pieces; I particularly loved the high shine black pussybow dress. Overall the show was entertaining, enthralling and a strong display of Hogg’s award winning creative skills. I was extremely grateful to the Mark Fast X TIGI team for inviting me backstage before the presentation to see the transformation of the models. Not only did I get to talk to the Tigi and Illamasqua team, I was also
able to see stylist (and inspiration) Calvin O’Paleye dress the models for the show.. and of course the main man Mark Fast was there, cool calm and collected throughout the whole process. “This season, Mark Fast’s SS19 collection transports us to a world of the desert goddess.” – Maria Kovacs, TIGI European Session Director. There were three key products used to ensure the model’s jumbo hair pieces stayed in place during the presentation; Bed Head by Tigi Queen For A Day: initially blow dried into the models roots to give lasting hold and volume. Bed Head by TIGI Oh Bee Hive: to create massive lift at the roots, helping hair look even fuller. TIGI Copyright Volume Finishing Spray, this was the products first exclusive preview. The spray provides a long lasting but touchable hold while still giving a glossy appearance to the hair. What Maria created for the show was impressive, you’ve never seen so many hair pieces piled high! Whilst the hair was big and statement it worked perfectly in tangent with the collection, especially the
feathered fringes which were prominent in several looks. It ensured the entire show was cohesive. Pablo Rodriguez, Illamasqua’s Director of Artistry crafted six different looks for the models. The whole focus was on the eyes. “It co-ordinates with the technicolour looks that the models are wearing, but is even brighter.” All colours came from the Reign of Rock Experimental Palette which has the most delectable vibrant colours which are hyper pigmented. Skin needed to be kept transparent in order to take the strong eye look so used Beyond Veil Primer and Gleam Highlighter for a glow. In order to amplify the eyes Pablo used a white lipstick (Eclipse) on the eyelid before applying the powders into an extended rounded shape. Lips were kept nude by using Glamore Lipstick in tease which provided a “pretty peachy hue.” I’ve been an Illamasqua fan for a number of years now, on top of being entirely cruelty free, and having an amazing brand ethos it was the quality of the product that had me hooked. Also for those of you wanting to explore the product range and brush up on your skills, Illamasqua offer a range of courses for all. You can also choose an extra special course with Pablo himself. Models all prepped, primed, dressed and eager to go, the presentation began. One thing you are guaranteed to get in a Mark Fast piece is sexy sophistication. The collection was delicate, and Fast’s master skills in crochet were on full display. Earn yarn was spun, crocheted and dyed by hand; an extremely lengthy process, “we like

As models moved there was a clanging of shells which shimmered with every footstep, feathers flounced, and gold fringing rippled with every stride, glistening under the lights. The presentation was a hypnotizing spectacle which created gasps in the crowd as models emerged. I couldn’t possibly pick a favourite look, for me it was the entire show; the balance between each creative element which perfectly complimented Fast’s collection made this my show of the season.
