editor's Note Winter is here in the northern hemisphere and many of us would start to hibernate or retreat to shooting indoors. For those who are having a quiet time, it’s a perfect opportunity to look back on our years’ work and reflect. It is something that some of us do more than others. I believe the birth of social media has made us more competitive in a way, that we are constantly looking at someone else’s work, and perhaps wishing their own work can be better.

But what does it mean to be better? Is it the number of likes and following? Whilst social media has opened many opportunities for creatives, I think it has also created a facade where it almost becomes irrelevant. Fake followers and fake likes to make one’s profile look “popular” are so unbelievably common now a days; and sadly it’s the numbers that’s what most people look at.

What frustrates me is that some people work so hard to grow their social media following organically, only to have some “fakers” take a job, get the front row seat, get collaborations etc. Luckily because this issue is so widely known, brands and creatives are starting to take notice and pay more attention to the actual content. And I urge you too, to look at each social media account properly before you spend your hard earned cash to commission someone – and decide if this person will actually deliver the quality, and exposure (to the right potential clients) that you hoped for. A small amount of detective work is all that is needed to spot a fake account. This is the same for magazines, please look at their contents before you submit.

Now, for people who are trying to grow, please don’t get bogged down with social media numbers and lose track of what your brand stands for; and certainly please don’t lie to yourselves by buying followers or likes. There were many ways to get noticed by potential clients, social media is only one. The consistent quality of your work will speak for itself. I tell you this now, because a New Year will shortly arrive, and it’s the best time to reflect and take on something good for the future. So please, enjoy what you have created and take pride. I hope you enjoy this issue.
