Johan, teacher at the Alliance Française de Melbourne since 2007

“I’ve always taught French as a

foreign language. This passion really took off in 2005 when I did a work placement in a bilingual school in the US. Being a teacher requires a lot of patience and creativity in order to create an environment that is relaxed and comfortable for all the students. You also need to be able to listen to them to find out what their interests are, so you can suggest activities that will appeal to them. Teenagers love to move about and express themselves, especially after a day at school. This means a focus on oral expression and role plays to practice what they have learnt, and not forgetting to incorporate and reinforce what is covered at school! Also, being able to take advantage of what technology has to offer these days is wonderful. I love teaching teenagers, because they are so full of energy and humour, the class is always lively and entertaining!

tests and diplomas

25

DELF & DALF $80

to $150 for the Standard DELF or DALF exam

What are they? Held in over 120 countries, they are issued by the French Ministry of Education and are based on the CEFRL. They are designed to assess the communicative skills of a candidate in a real-life situation and to evaluate know-how (writing a letter, asking for information, exchanging opinions, etc.) rather than formal grammatical knowledge.

Why should I take these exams? Today French is an official language in almost 50 countries! The DELF and DALF diplomas are internationally recognised and valid for life. They are valued by French and European employers and are also a testimonial to a student’s success in learning French. Besides the DELF B2 is the minimum level required for foreign students to be admitted into a French university.

Which exam should I take? • You are a non-native French speaker of 18 years old or more: you should take the standard DELF (from $100 ) or DALF ( $150 ) exam. • You are a secondary-school student and you are either a non-native French speaker or a French speaker who resides in a non-francophone country: you should take the DELF Junior (  $80  ). It has the same structure as the standard DELF but the topics take into account the interests of teenagers. • You are a child from 8 to 11 years old and you are a beginner in French: you should take the DELF Prim (  $80  ). It has the same structure as the standard DELF but the topics take into account the interests of children. Sessions throughout the year: in 2013, 2 sessions will be organised for each type of DELF.

DAEFLE $140 to $450

The DAEFLE is a diploma provided by the Alliance Française de Paris and the CNED (Centre National d’Enseignement à Distance).

This diploma is for people who are or intend to become French teachers to nonFrench speaking students. Sessions throughout the year: in 2013, 2 sessions will be organised.

Robin – DALF C1

I went for the DALF C1 as a challenge, and because it would entitle me to take courses at universities in France, taught in French. You have to prepare for it specifically because the tests are quite specialised, but it was worth it and I’m glad to say I passed. Needless to say, I celebrated with champagne!

Marion – DAEFLE

I had a Masters degree in English and then taught French as a foreign language for 3 years in New Zealand and Australia. I realised how much I loved teaching my mother-tongue and decided to switch to a new career: I opted for the DAEFLE because of its vocational curriculum and its swift completion. It enabled me to theorise things I had experienced in the classroom and it helped me refine my teaching methods.

I find the library at Alliance Francaise a wonderful adjunct to lessons. The beginners’ books with audio discs really enhance vocabulary. There is a diverse range of novels, autobiographies and DVD’s that is sure to satisfy any budding Francophile.

All Alliance Française students have free access to the library. Otherwise a membership card is necessary to borrow documents. In C div on id ce ua ss l io Fa n m ily
