Windows On Europe Film Festival 13 > 17 April 2011 The Garden of Forking Paths: The Films of Alain Resnais April - may 2011 Alain Resnais is one of the key figures of post-World War II cinema: a precise and adventurous director whose work relentlessly and poetically explores the themes of time, memory and traumatic recent history. Initially trained as an actor, Resnais' early documentary films examined the work of painters and other artists, and betrayed a preference for endlessly tracking camera movement and literary scripts that have continued to characterise his 60-year career. Preoccupied with British, American and French culture, the popular and the avantgarde, Resnais has collaborated with a number of the key figures of modernist post-war French literature (Marguerite Duras,

Drawing from the diverse and rich cultures of Europe, the Windows On Europe Film Festival brings together awardwinning films from across the European Union. The festival comprises of 14 counties each presenting a film that has won a major award. If you like films that delve into relationships with humour and drama, there are gems from Cyprus, Hungary, France and Spain and poignant drama offerings from Belgium, Germany, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands and Sweden. The young and the young at heart will enjoy the Finnish film while the Slovenian entry provides a mix of thriller and horror.

Influenced by the philosophy of Bergson, the memory-entranced literature of Proust, the Hollywood and French films of the 1930s, and American comic books, his cinema is both archaic and profoundly modern. Interview with Gemma-Rose Turnbull who shared in the daily lives of marginalised women over the recent months. Her encounters have given rise to an exhibition and a book.

Who is Gemma-Rose Turnbull?

Qui est Gemma-Rose Turnbull ?

I am an Australian photographer, who specialises in photographing the lives of women. I studied documentary photography at the Queensland College of Art, graduating in 2005.

Je suis une photographe australienne, spécialisée dans la photographie de femmes dans leur quotidien. Diplômée en 2005, j’ai étudié la photographie documentaire au Queensland College of Art.

After completing my degree I spent two years as a photographer with The Northern Star, a daily newspaper based in Lismore, Australia. While I was there I was named NSW News Photographer of the Year 2007 for a series on the funerals of four young men killed in the same car accident. Ironically it was also the story that saw me make a decision to leave newspaper work and concentrate on long-term projects, which I find much more rewarding.

9 > 25 April 2011 In 2008 I was awarded the Mary Clerc Scholarship for Achievements in Photojournalism to attend the Missouri Photo Workshop in America, an experience that changed the way I approached storytelling, narrowing my focus to more intimate stories. How did the project "Red Light Dark Room; Sex, lives and stereotypes" begin? In early 2010 I was awarded an Australia Council for the Arts Connections Residency to do a residency with nonprofit organisation St Kilda Gatehouse to teach, photograph and interview the marginalised women who use their services. This project gives a voice to these women. It paints a rare picture of real women, with real hearts, who care about family, have friendships, and dreams. These stories cover the hardship, but also the episodes in their lives which bring them joy and fulfillment.

The Seven Deadly Sins

Patrice Martin de Barros 3 March > 1 April For a while, I’ve tried to imagine how I could represent the seven cardinal sins through photography. To define greed or envy was difficult to imagine. For this reason, I first decided to write the seven poems, then I had to create a photographic link with them. Each photo is a story - ‘ours’ -

where nothing is really a sin, but rather a way of being. Let’s think back to 1600 years ago, with the little vices that we live through today in our daily lives. What was senseless back then no longer is today. The white background to each photo represents the void where vice leads to. Or more simply, a little bit of everyone living with sins. ”

No one will tell us Tue 15 & Thu 17 March, 7.30pm Wed 16 March, 9.30pm Since 2005, Rosalind Crisp has been developing d a n s e, an ongoing project of movement research between Australia and France. The d a n s e project deals with the way movement is produced by a dancer. Through the practice of a dynamic set of movement-making tools, the dancer’s attention is focussed on how movements form, by the creation of movement rather than the representation of it. Rosalind Crisp has invited three artists to collaborate on a work that takes them to the edge of their capacities, stripped back, living by their wits, not waiting for the end... She has chosen three artists equally engaged in their own - 19 -

Dominique Fillon

On a tour that will take them through Asia and Australia, Dominique Fillon and his Australian musicians will join you on 17 April, at Bennets Lane, Melbourne's temple of jazz. Three years after his first album, Détours, comes a new testimony to Dominique’s rich musical heritage, Americas. Resembling a voyage from north to south across the New World, Americas features diverse musical styles, always leaning to the fusion of influences. Dominique Fillon enjoys combining these rhythms and sounds in his compositions, adding his personality and originality to these genres that inspire him so. On the album, samba meets gospel piano, while cha-cha-cha meets the accents of the West Coast. But what stands out most when listening to Americas is the priority which is given to melody, the starting point for Fillon when he composes. With a true attachment to song, Dominique is

also an arranger, having worked notably on several Sanseverino albums, as well as touring and recording with the likes of Angélique Kidjo, Jimmy Cliff, Dave Weckl and Bernard Lavilliers. Dominique’s soundscapes have an amazing capacity to absorb the beauty and romantic soul of the landscapes he traverses. They are reminiscent of Lyle Mays, one of his influences along with Oscar Peterson. For this new project, recorded in Chicago by Grammy Award-winning Helik Hadar (of Herbie Hancock, Madeleine Peyroux, fame), the pianist has chosen to play in a quartet, allowing for those precious solos with another musician. French jazz star Dominique Fillon will be joined by well-known Aus- 20 -

tralian musicians Brett Hirst and Nic Cecire on his tour of Asia and Australia, as well as by accompanying guest musicians joining the trio in each city. AllianceFrançaise de Melbourne

Christine Béal’s research in a French company in Melbourne in the 1990s was the first detailed study to analyse daily interactions between French and Australian English speakers in the workplace, in an attempt to understand why Australians thought the French were “rude” or “arrogant”, and the French perceived Australians as “wishywashy” or “insincere”. The study of French-Australian relations has become an area of lifelong study for Christine Béal and a number of other researchers such as Kerry Mullan, whose aim is to inform others of the different interactional styles of these speakers, and ultimately to get rid of such negative labelling and stereotyping.

Chair

Diane de Saint Léger is an applied linguist and a lecturer in French Studies in the School of Languages and Linguistics at The University of Melbourne.

Speakers

Dr Christine Béal is a professeur agrégée in English, Senior Lecturer in Linguistics and Communication and Head of the département des Sciences du langage at l'université Paul Valéry Montpellier 3. Her recent book examines everyday interaction.

Dr Kerry Mullan is lecturer and coordinator of French Studies at RMIT University. Her recent book Join us for an evening of intercultural examines the distinct styles of exchange as our speakers discuss French and Australian English speakers in the expression of their findings in these areas. opinions.
