Between plant and ghost

A POETIC AND CRITICAL FANTASY ABOUT THE NOTION OF EVOLUTION AND THE RADICAL TRANSFORMATION OF OUR CONSCIOUSNESS. Who is Vivien Racault?

I’m not your average artist who trained at Fine Arts school. In fact, I dabble in the arts, social sciences research - particularly on literature - publishing, multimedia, advertising, training, graphic design, photography and music…

My photographs are as a result dominated by a writer’s discourse while in my music a filmmaker’s vision actually becomes evident. In my exhibitions, these categories always give way to a coherent and structured world where reason, the imagination and the senses can be satisfied.

I try to be faithful to my romantic and pre-marxist vision of the ‘creator’ artist, and try to avoid imposing a hierarchy on various cultural forms. There are

Je n'ai pas le profil de l'artiste-type avec cursus académique en école des Beauxarts. Je suis en fait un touche-à-tout : arts plastiques, recherche en sciences humaines - plus particulièrement en littérature - édition, multimédia, publicité, formation, design graphique, photographie et musique...

Conséquences : dans mes photographies domine le discours d'un écrivain alors que dans ma musique c’est en fait la vision d'un cinéaste qui surgit. Dans mes expositions ces catégories finissent toujours par s'effacer au profit d'un univers cohérent et structuré, dans lequel le raisonnement, l'imagination et les sens peuvent être satisfaits.

What links you to Reunion island?

I was born and grew up on Reunion island, which is near Madagascar. As all my family lives there, it is my centre, my origin, and I suffer when I’m away for too long. It’s a magnificent island whose beauty lies in its contrasts: the saturated colours, the massive craggy hills bathed in shadows and light, the vegetation’s incredible vitality, the violence of the elements and random events, the overpopulation... But also the tranquil cool of thousands of gullies irrigating the volcanic earth, the way of life of the creole people who maintain a close connection to nature. I owe the core of my imagination to Reunion Island, as well as my palette of colours and the chiaroscuro in my photographs.

Quels sont vos liens avec l'île de La Réunion ?

Je suis né et j'ai grandi à l'île de La Réunion, près de Madagascar. Toute ma famille vit là-bas, c'est donc mon centre, mon origine, et je souffre d'éloignement quand je pars trop longtemps. C'est surtout une île magnifique dont la beauté est tout en contrastes : couleurs saturées, reliefs gigantesques découpés par l'ombre et la lumière, vitalité incroyable de la flore, violence des éléments et des faits-divers, surpopulation... mais aussi fraîcheur sereine des milliers de ravines qui irriguent cette terre volcanique, art de vivre de la population créole qui a souvent gardé un rapport intime à la nature. Je dois à ce lieu le cœur de mon imaginaire, ma palette de couleurs et le clair-obscur caractéristique de mes photographies.

I’ll present a multimedia exhibition entitled Between Plant and Ghost at the Alliance française. It will be a fantastical poetic and critical reflexion on the notion of evolution. Specifically, the radical transformation of our consciousness and of our connection to the world, lead on by the dematerialisation process which has characterised the human story since its beginning.

Besides that, for a year I’ve been working on an artists’ book entitled Six zhèrs lo soir (‘Six o’clock in the evening’), and which will be devoted to fantasy tales written in creole by Emmeline PayetCoupama, along the lines of Extraordinary Stories by Edgar Allan Poe. I’m in charge of the book’s graphic design and the photographs that will illustrate each story.

At a future date, I hope to work on Origine, which will constitute the second part of a triptych begun with my exhibition Mystères (‘Mysteries’).

A l'Alliance française je présenterai une exposition multimédia appelée Between Plant and Ghost. Il s'agit d'une rêverie fantastique, poétique et critique sur la notion d’évolution. En particulier sur la transformation radicale de notre conscience et de notre rapport au monde induite par le processus de dématérialisation qui caractérise l’épopée humaine depuis son origine.

Sinon je travaille depuis un an sur un projet de livre d'artistes appelé Six zhèrs lo soir et qui sera consacré à des contes fantastiques écrits en créole par Emmeline Payet-Coupama, dans la lignée des Histoires Extraordinaires d'Edgar Poe. Je me charge du design graphique de l'ouvrage et des photographies qui vont illustrer chaque histoire.

Dans un futur plus lointain, je souhaite travailler sur Origine, la deuxième partie du triptyque dont mon exposition Mystères constituait la première partie.
