Paris to Melbourne with an Atlas 6 Oct > 6 Nov 2010

Festival Etonnants Voyageurs / New Heartlands / Beaujolais Nouveau

Edito In 2010, the Alliance Française de Melbourne (AFM) celebrates its 120th year. Founded in 1890 by Berthe Mouchette, our association is one of the oldest in the global Alliance Française network. Former AFM President Colin Nettelbeck retraces its major developments in this magazine. During October to mark this anniversary, our walls will be graced with late-19th century maps of Paris from the State Library of Victoria archives. This demonstrates the vitality of this unique language and cultural centre, which has renewed itself over the decades and created close ties with a great variety of peak partners across Victoria.

DEPARTURES & ARRIVAL Following 2 years as head of the Alliance Française language school, Nathalie Sem left her position on 31 August 2010. As Deputy Director, she brought precision and a sense of professionalism to our organisation. Mother of three months old Adèle, Nathalie is now based in Sydney. Taking over from her from September will be Alice

Gauny, who comes to us from the Alliance Française de Cebu in the Philippines. Also leaving us is Sylvie Christophe, French Embassy Cultural and Cooperation Attaché in Melbourne since October 2007, who returns to Paris after 7 years spent abroad. Unfortunately, her position will be discontinued.

Spring Early Music Festival 1 > 16 Oct 2010 The annual Spring Early Music Festival presented by The University of Melbourne’s Early Music Studio, features 11 events presented by students, local and international musicians between 1 – 16 October 2010. This year’s festival opens with Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Les Arts Floissants of 1685. Somewhat overshadowed by his contemporary Lully, it was only in the 20th century that Charpentier came to be acknowledged as one of the most gifted and versatile of French composers. One of Charpentier’s lighter works, this frothy and amusing chamber opera tells the story of the eponymous Arts flourishing

under the beneficent and peaceful reign of Louis XIV. Featuring soloists, Baroque Ensemble and Early Voices of the Early Music Studio under the guidance of early music specialists, Greg Dikmans and Vivien Hamilton, this is an exciting opportunity to enjoy a rarely performed work of an increasingly appreciated composer.

Friday 1 Oct, 7pm & Saturday 2 Oct, 5pm at Brunswick Town Hall, cnr Sydney Rd & Dawson Sts, Brunswick $20/$10 conc & seniors. With the support of Alliance Française de Melbourne. Visit www.vcam.unimelb.edu.au/semf or email vwatts@unimelb.edu.au for full Festival program & booking information.

INTERVIEW

Colin Nettelbeck In July 1890, the Alliance Française de Melbourne was founded by Berthe Mouchette. Colin Nettelbeck, former President of the Alliance Française Board and French Studies Professor at the University of Melbourne, shares his historical knowledge and revisits the 120 years of this venerable institution's history. The Alliance Française de Melbourne En 2010, l’Alliance française de celebrates 120 years of existence in Melbourne célèbre ses 120 ans d’existence. 2010. Yes, and it’s a birthday worth celebrating. I had the chance, at the time of the centenary in 1990, to put together a little book on the history of the Alliances in Australia: The Alliance Française in Australia: an Historical Perspective. The Melbourne Alliance was the first in the country; approved by Paris in 1889, it had its first meeting on 6 June 1890 at ‘Oberwyl’ (in Burnett St, St Kilda), presided over by Mme Berthe Mouchette. However, if the first hundred years were full of adventure, the last twenty are also exciting—just consider things like the legal incorporation of the association, the purchase and renovation of Eildon

2009 VCA Graduates Alliance Francaise Award Exhibition 14 Sep > 2 Oct 2010

RAMONA LOLA ANGELICO ELENA BETROS CHRISTO CROCKER MADELINE SHARROCK MARIE SCHOENMAKER NICHOLAS WADDEL Since 2003, the Alliance Française de Melbourne and the Victorian College of the Arts have developed a close relationship. With the creation of the Alliance Française Award for VCA graduates, this relationship has been materialised. Each November, the prizewinners selected at the Graduation Exhibition at the VCA are given the opportunity to exhibit their work at the Alliance Française Gallery. Ramona Lola Angelico, Elena Betros, Christo Crocker, Marie Schoenmaker, Madeline Sharrock, and Nicholas Waddell are the young artists who were chosen in 2009 by Sylvie Christophe, who was the current French Embassy Cultural and Cooperation Attaché for Melbourne, and myself. We allowed ourselves to be guided and carried by our emotions during our sojourn through the VCA exhibiting spaces last November. Choosing prizewinning works proved a difficult task as the works on exhibit were extremely diverse,

as were the media used. As such, we feared that by passing a corridor too swiftly, we would miss seeing a work installed at the far end of a photography lab or in the Faculty’s outdoor spaces.

Following our whole day’s visit, Sylvie and I had lengthy discussions, but in the end, rather similar choices. To six truly standout young artists, the Alliance Française proudly opens its doors and offers its walls, in the course of their September 2010 group exhibition. This is another symbol of the willingness of our cultural and language centre – present - 16 -

Paris to Melbourne with an Atlas presented by the State Library of Victoria OCT 6 > NOV 6 2010 An extraordinary gift of books, made by the Government of France to the City of Melbourne, has recently been rediscovered at the State Library of Victoria. The gift was an act of cultural generosity to mark the beginning of Melbourne International Festival of 1880-81, probably the largest annual event of the global calendar - and what a gift it was! There were in excess of 150 books, some of them very large, and in them the people of Melbourne saw Paris spread out in all its glory. Alongside maps, images and tales of old Paris were the descriptions of a very new city, a very modern city. By 1880, Paris had reinvented itself as the very picture of modernity, having become the most advanced metropolis in the world. In fact these books were something of a template for the creation of a stateof-the-art city. For example, there were detailed plans of the world’s

first fully enclosed sewerage system subsequent gift to Melbourne Paris and water supply – connected to had suffered terrible damage. As a result, the Atlas des Anciens Plans every property in Paris. de Paris is a precious document But against this futuristic flourish, that represents both the survival sat another book, and this massive of one of Europe’s greatest cities, volume was possibly the most and a fierce determination to hang important in the collection. It was onto the memory of how the French called the Atlas des Anciens Plans Capital came into being.” de Paris and it was a spectacular set of reproductions of old maps Michael Shirrefs of Paris. These maps were the Curator of the exhibition most vivid account of where Paris had come from. They told the story of its journey, from a small Opening Roman settlement on the Seine, Wed 6 Oct 2010 at 6.30pm to becoming the grand European Venue Alliance Française Gallery centre of palaces, gardens and 51 Grey Street - St Kilda high-culture. The hidden story behind these maps is that they are testament to a City recovering from the debris and destruction of both the Franco-Prussian War and the fiery domestic battles of the Communes. Ashley Gaudion (saxophone and vocals), Rodney Gilbert (drums and vocals), Paul Griska (double bass and vocals), Dannie Bourne (keyboard and vocals) Their style is most easily described as a hot blend of jazz, swing, blues & boogie but that hardly does justice to their raw energy and enthusiasm – the kind of energy that will bring you to your feet and onto the dance floor before you even quite know what is happening. is not the kind of band to sit back on their laurels – all the performers play a vast array of instruments and are singers as well and whilst they work together to create the kind of musical harmony some bands can only dream of, every solo from any player is also pure delight.

RMIT Brandmark Clear space & Minimum size

We are very pleased to welcome Jean-François Vernay, a FrancoAustralian essayist based in New Caledonia, who specialises in Australian literature. JeanFrançois will be speaking about his latest book Panorama du roman australien: des origines Ă nos jours 1831-2007 (Hermann Press 2009), which he describes as “a labour of loveâ€?. This survey of Australian fiction aims to give European readers an overview of Australian literature, and is now available in English as The Great Australian Novel – A Panorama. As the founding editor of the journal Correspondances ocĂŠaniennes, Jean-François has been publishing articles and book reviews on contemporary Australian fiction, and promoting Australian culture for over a decade.

RMIT Brandmark The RMIT Brandmark is the key identifier of the university. The RMIT Brandmark is formed by two key elements: - the RMIT Wordmark - the RMIT Symbol The relationship between these two elements is fixed and should never be separated or used as individual elements. It is essential that the brandmark is always reproduced from the digital art files supplied.

RMIT Symbol

Clear space The RMIT brandmark needs to be surrounded by an area of uninterrupted clear space to allow it to remain prominent on all communications. Clear space is the non-print area surrounding the brandmark. A basic formula had been used to calculate the minimum ‘clear space’– this can be used to determine clear space for the brandmark at any size.

Beaujolais Nouveau

Friday 19 November 2010, 7pm till 10pm Alliance Française de Melbourne 51 Grey Street, ST KILDA VIC 3182

The French artist Ben Vautier created a famous work entitled “En art il faut du nouveau".

Venue Alliance Française 51 Grey Street – St Kilda Tickets: $40 Full / $ 30 Members inc. two glasses of beaujolais nouveau, french country-style buffet, live music Booking essentials : www.afmelbourne.asn.au or 9525 3463

Each year on the third Thursday of November, newness, freshness, surprise and anticipation are celebrated with the new wine produced from the juicy Gamay grape variety. Originally from the noble Burgundy region, the Gamay noir à jus blanc was cultivated further south on the Beaujolais hills, a region with a Mediterranean feel just north of Lyon, as it was influenced by Roman culture. Today the name Beaujolais is synonymous with newness. While the ritual celebration of the new wine harvest is the perfect occasion for partying, the other Beaujolais, a more serious wine

to match the gastronomy of Lyon, should not be overlooked. Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé, a raw wine with a light body and fruity character is a good reminder that wine is made to be enjoyed. Gilles Lapalus, winegrower established in Australia, previously with the French Institute of Taste, will explore the history of this wine - nowadays celebrated across the world in November - on a Friday evening at the Alliance Française de Melbourne. Come along to our “Cabaret Style” Beaujolais Nouveau 2010 degustation and enjoy a French country-style buffet with great live music!
