The 24th edition of the Alliance Française French Film Festival (AF FFF) marks the return of the main French cultural event in Melbourne. This year’s program showcases the finest movies to emerge from France over the last 12 months, and, as in previous years, we are delighted to present many great stars of French cinema (Audrey Tautou, Juliette Binoche, Matthieu Kassowitz, Fabrice Luchini and Gerard Depardieu...) along with the latest works of Our local sponsors:
esteemed directors (Raymond Depardon, Alain Resnais, François Ozon, Bruno Podalydès…). The Festival is eagerly anticipated by a great many people beyond the local French community, as evidenced by the 126,000 patrons who attended the Festival in 2012 in Australia. Once again the Festival will embody the diversity of French cinema through an eclectic program of 42 films. Comedies, romances, cabarets, history, actions, thrillers and dramas feature on the
menu, with a notable section devoted to women as well as a compelling selection of movies about past and present French society. Besides the opening and closing nights, a number of special themed events will be on offer during the festival such as “Versailles Extravaganza”, “An Artist in Provence”, “Join the Circus” and “L’Amour Always”.

About the Curator Since its creation in 2008, IDAIA (International Development for Australian Indigenous Art) has been dedicated to increasing the presence and the appreciation of a quality and ethical Australian Indigenous art among international audiences, through educating, curating, sourcing and facilitating numerous exhibition and acquisition projects. IDAIA’s Founder and Director, Solenne Ducos-Lamotte, was previously Head of the Aboriginal art department at Caruana & Reid Fine Art in Sydney. She also contributed to the Australian Indigenous Art Commission at the Musée du quai Branly in Paris. Gestuelles presents works of Aboriginal women painters from desert communities where the emergence of acrylic painting and the understanding of women’s role have significantly been encouraged by two prominent French women anthropologists : Françoise Dussart in Yuendumu and Barbara Glowczeski in Balgo Hills. The strong, historical links between France and Aboriginal art offer a rich and
fertile background – from the research and writing works of French ethnologists and anthropologists, their interventions in Aboriginal art communities, to the development of important public Aboriginal art collections in France and the exceptional Australian Indigenous Art Commission at the Musée du Quai Branly (which held the 2012 landmark exhibition ‘Tjukurrtjanu: Origins of Western Desert Art’).
The exhibition catalogue includes documentation and writings reflecting on the evolution of Aboriginal women’s gestures in acrylic painting, highlighting the interventions and achievements of French researchers in this field as well as the presence of Yuendumu and Balgo artists and their works in France.

The Four Scoops are a combination of four unique working musicians from differing musical heritages bound by a love of back-beat groove. The groups musical heritage harks back to a time of melting musical styles as Jazz met early Rock n Roll. Their repertoire is wide and varied from Blues shouters Winonie Harris to Jazz back beat legend Louis Jordan to Fifties crooners to Bolero versions of Cold Chisel and Dragon hits. The Four Scoops love of variety in tunes and grooves has its basis in the diversity of the members.
The group is led by trombonist & singer Ben Gillespie who has been making music in Melbourne for twenty five years, in addition to a heavy international touring schedule with other groups. Ben has played and recorded with the likes of Gotye, Eric Burdon, Isaac Hayes, Tim Rogers and The Australian Art Orchestra. Lyn Wallis has been drumming for more than 45 years and is an undisputed national treasure of New Orleans jazz and backbeat grooves. Lyn has divided most of his musical life between Melbourne and

Passing by the Tree by Nathalie Hartog-Gautier Memory begins at the fingertips. It is like a momentary prick of anticipation where ‘pins and needles’ stitch together meanings. Life is filled with edges and surfaces that brush up against us as the literal fabric of life. Skin on skin, bodies make meaning among the relations we build as children and adults, emanating out through

the worlds we inhabit. The looking that is invited through art making includes this aspect of skin. The eye is not a detached impassionate point of observation but remains a part of a body that inhabits space and all its relationships. The eye is alive like a fish swimming through a sea, always plotting a course of connection that
brings orientation and identity. Looking at this skin of memory has concerned Nathalie Hartog-Gautier for some time. In this body of work she brings it close to home as the works find their genesis in contemplating her relationship with her aunt. This important maternal figure from the art-

ist’s life has recently suffered the affects of dementia. This has brought with it increased disorientation and a lack of logical communication. It has however heightened the artist’s awareness of the more peripheral aspects of intimate relations such as touch, sound and residual memory. Such intimate codes are forms of visceral communication filled with love and delight. Such art making does not give us detachment but brings the potential for touch. The exhibition title Passing by the Tree, references Marcel Proust’s observation that we can rescue the past even when it is otherwise hidden in the present. By activating the residual memory of objects, we unlock their haptic or felt power to evoke memory, where with shock, the past becomes present. We not only discover what has been lost but more potently we discover ourselves in relation with those things that we have loved. Instead of finding our energies dispersed such containers of memory make us alive to ourselves in new ways. Proust observes that through activating this poetic relation they ‘overcome death and return to share our life.’ Memory adds a thickness of time to our present moment and serves to orientate us people who love, and are in turn loved. To explore this territory of thick relations the artist has employed a number of artistic gestures. A suite of drawings obtained by the direct rubbing
of objects, indicates the subtle change of hand pressure and appear like photographs massaged into consciousness. They somehow mimic the touch of the eye on familiar household objects such as a clothes hanger, a chair, and a bag. The artist invites us to consider a vocabulary of intimate and often pre-verbal information through objects that carry the history of her family and their
meaning. They represent pattern and form as in language; yet contain idiosyncratic mysteries that thicken the nature of language to include atmosphere and relationships outside the frame. The artist recounts conversations with her aunt that did not use either French or English but a gobbledygook of speaking unfettered by logic. This is a language that goes back and
beyond the surface of logical or formal geometric composition sense of touch. These objects animate the human even as they declare themselves as ‘things’ devoid of character or personality. They act like sponges, filling up with the memory of their human handling, a tactile caressing that refuses to be shaken off. The vibrant abstracted colour drawings offer a contrasting gesture as they fizzle with energy and form. They mimic the logic of language in their construction yet evoke states of mind that are electric with
forth between two lives in a shared moment of meaning. It doesn’t make any sense but at the same time it means everything. These works serve as visual contemplations of this heightened awareness of communication that goes beyond the surface of logical or formal geometric composition. Excerpt from The Skin of Memory , a text written by Dr Rod Pattenden (curator and writer - Chair of the Blake Prize, exploring the spiritual and religious in Australian Art).

THE OTHER NAPOLĂŠON
thu The extravagant gas-lit 18 Second Empire of NapolĂŠon III apr
In words, music, portraits and photographs by David Hood. $15
includes cheese and wine
Following last year’s sell-out Napoleon exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, David Hood surveys the career of the “other Napoleonâ€? (nephew of NapolĂŠon I), who ruled France between 1848 and 1870.
David Hood is a musician and local celebrity himself. Long-time 3MBS FM broadcaster and previous pre-concert speaker for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, he has been sharing his love of Franz Liszt for years.
He rebuilt Paris, but no boulevard bears his name. He brought stability and prosperity to France, yet is almost erased from French history. Why? Alas, his erratic foreign policy (and his reign) ended in the catastrophic war with Prussia which saw France invaded and the City of Light besieged. This multi-media presentation uses portraits, photographs,

the spoken word, and items from David’s collection to survey this fascinating era and its personalities. It is time to reappraise the man who created the Paris we know today, and who ruled longer than his famous uncle, in a period where art flourished and glamour ruled. Back by popular demand, David will play Chopin and Liszt at the keyboard. Not to be missed! Cover charge payable on the night (includes cheese and wine) – cash only please: $15 Bookings essential: themelbournesalon@gmail.com (numbers strictly limited to 50).
