2014-15 LAAAC 11 Officer Nominating Form

Alpha Gamma Delta in Southern California has an exciting year ahead! We will soon be welcoming many New Members to our UCLA, USC and SDSU campuses. It is the culmination of years of keeping Alpha Gamma Delta alive in Southern California to have all three campuses re-colonizing at the same time. It is amazing to see the detailed planning, the coordination of events, and the training of advisors that is taking place with the hard work of International Headquarters, Volunteer Service Team members, and many alumnae. Check out the articles in this newsletter for more information about the activities going on. Our alumnae are having an exciting year as well. The Los Angeles Area Alumnae Chapter (LAAAC) is happy to see long time members at our events and we are thrilled to welcome alumnae members who may be new to the area and/or those who want to renew their bonds of sisterhood and connect or reconnect with other Alpha Gams. There are many events planned for the year with something for everyone including events involving the recolonized collegiate chapters. We have events planned in all areas of Southern California so check our Calendar to find what is happening near you. The calendar is included in the newsletter but updated information can always be found on our Facebook page and on our website (links are on the last page of the newsletter). The calendar is your invitation to all events. Check out information in the newsletter about our “Commit to One!” campaign then tell us what event you will commit to attend. We look forward to seeing you soon! To make sure you get all of the important information about happenings and events, please make sure you provide us with your most current contact information, both conventional and electronic. Updated address information can be submitted via the Rosevines form in this newsletter or via the Contact form on the website. If you have any questions or want to know how to become more involved, please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the other LAAAC board members listed in this newsletter. seen in forever, and build new connections with sisters you haven’t met yet. Alpha Gamma Delta has so many exciting things happening right now and we want you to be part of it. So what event will it be? Will you lace up your walking shoes and join us as we raise money for JDRF? Or maybe you’ll join us to pick out a pumpkin with

the family, wander the Getty museum or enjoy nachos and margaritas with sisters. How about kicking off your holiday season at the Gingerbread Tea? Or making (continued on page 6)

From the Foundation “I learned the value of living and leading with integrity. I gained an understanding that one does not need to hold a title to lead, but by Living with Purpose one can lead by example and gain followers in unexpected places and ways. Being a leader is not just a definition; it is a lifestyle..”--Hillary Herr, Gamma Eta, LeaderShape Scholarship Recipient Hillary Herr, Gamma Eta, LeaderShape Scholarship Recipient

After attending the LeaderShape Institute, a week-long educational experience designed to give young adults the means to become ex-

traordinary leaders, Hillary is a different person and a better leader. The experience equipped her with the knowledge to change the world by working toward a vision that is grounded in her deepest values; a skill Hillary will use for the rest of her life. Thanks to donations made by chapters, clubs and alumnae to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, Hillary was just one of the sisters provided the opportunity to attend LeaderShape.

Her transformational experience not only impacts her life but the communities in which she will serve, and she will always have Alpha Gamma Delta to credit for her leadership success.

AGD Foundation celebrates its 50th The Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013 with the 10 millionth dollar awarded in support of fraternity programs, such as the “Own It” program introduced at this past summer’s TLC. The program is being used as a launching pad for a values-driven approach to risk management in both collegiate changes and individual lives of our sisters. The Foundation provides scholarship money for undergraduate and graduate studies, grants

for diabetes research, SIS grants for sisters in need, and support of fraternity educational program.

For a complete list of donors, see the latest issue of The Columns newsletter and/or the Foundation website.

Anniversary challenges were established in an effort to help support the Foundation’s goals. Our members have financially supported the fraternity allowing for the creation of 5 new endowments, 58 donors increased their support to $1000, the challenge to send 500 eCards was surpassed, and the Corinthian Society reached 200 members.

The Los Angeles Area Alumnae Chapter raise funds for the Foundation at our annual Gingerbread Tea and from the sale of opportunity drawing tickets at IRD.

LAAAC is in Good Standing, a 5-star Alumnae Chapter All Alumnae Chapters and Clubs are required to complete certain tasks including such things as turning in reports related to activities, officers, membership, and finances; paying dues; submitting by-laws; supporting the Constitution and Standing Rules; as well as holding at least 6 events per year and issuing one newsletter a year. Being in Good Standing allows the Chapter/Club to have a vote in International Council elections as well as

changes to the Constitution and Standing Rule. For the 2012-2013 Fraternity year, the Los Angeles Area Alumnae Chapter achieved Good Standing. Additionally, the Fraternity currently uses the Five Star Program to recognize Alumnae Chapters and Clubs for contributions over and above what is required for Good Standing. The first three stars are earned by meeting additional require-

ments including submitting all reports on time; where applicable supplying advisors for collegiate chapters, participating in one local community service project per year. Two additional stars can be earned in a number of different ways including supporting a Junior Circle, hostessing an Alpha Gam Always event, and achieving a 10% increase in members paying Support Fees, among others. LAAAC earned 5-stars for the 2012-2013 year.

In preparation for the recolonizations of the three Southern California chapters, activity behind the scenes has been ramping up for several months. Most advisors have been selected and have received two webinar trainings. They will go through an additional in-person training in September prior to recruitment. Extension Specialists and Leadership Consultants have been here in Southern California since August and have spent time meeting with women on all three campuses and partici-

pating in Potential New Member Symposiums to get our name out into the collegiate community. While Alpha Gamma Delta will not participate in Formal Recruitment on the campuses this fall, information about Alpha Gamma Delta colonizing was provided to all Potential New Members prior to recruitment. Recruitment for new members will involve several Info Sessions, a more formal one-onone interview (Info-View), and an invitational Preference

event. These events will be hosted by the Extension Team at various locations on and around campus. Alumnae are asked to respect the Recruitment process and allow the Extension team to complete the Recruitment process which will result in our New Member classes. There will be opportunities and events in the upcoming months where alumnae will be able to meet our New Members.

Life of the new Colonies Our new colonies will immediately become involved in the Greek Life on their campuses, participating in Greek Week, social events, sisterhood retreats, and philanthropy events. However, some things about Colony life are a little different than the sorority experience with which members of existing chapters are familiar. Most notably, there are no officers; instead the collegiates will be assigned to different teams that

specialize in different areas of the sorority operations. This allows for exposure by more of the New Members to how the chapter runs and provides more leadership opportunities. As with all New Members they will participate in the Alpha Experience which helps new members acclimate to Fraternity life and set expectations for membership. With an emphasis on sisterhood, the Alpha Experience consists of five key pro-

AGD Colonization News Not long after colonizing our three campuses in Southern California, Alpha Gamma Delta will turn her attention to continuing to grow our sisterhood with additional colonizations. Next up in Fall 2014 is Appalachian State University, a comprehensive, public, coeducational university located in Boone, North Carolina. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will be colonized in the Fall of 2015.

Most recently announced is Tufts University in Boston with colonization occurring most likely in 2014 or later. Tufts University is a private research university located in Medford/ Somerville, near Boston.

Chapter House Update This past Spring both the Delta Alpha and Delta Epsilon House Association membership voted to deed their respective chapter houses to the Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity Housing Corporation (FHC). FHC assumed ownership of the properties and will manage the dayto-day operations of the chapter houses. Additionally, FHC has provided funding to allow for renovations to both properties to bring them up to standard for the campuses. Work to the stucco on the outside of the house and repair, update and widening of the front walkway will be the primary work at the Delta Epsilon house. Additionally, FHC engaged a tile maker to duplicate and repair the handmade tiles on the front stairway and new lighting fixtures have been installed in the living room complimenting the Spanish architecture. Additional projects include remodeling of the downstairs powder room and “date room and rerouting of the door to the silver closet. The front entry will also have new electronic security features added.

have been moved to provide an asymmetrical look. The renovation also includes gutting most of the first floor with a substantial change to the layout of the space. New furniture will be purchased for throughout the space. Upstairs will also get a renovation to take away the feel of the long hallway and to upgrade bathrooms and storage space. The built-in bedroom furniture will be replaced with modular furniture which will provide the girls with the ability to personalize their space. The multi-million dollar renovation will be completed in by year end.

Recent photo of the construction on staircase at Delta Alpha chapter house.

The house will be available for the chapter to use for activities, meals and events in the spring 2014 semester. Starting in fall 2014, 66 women will be able to live in the chapter house. Alumnae receptions are being planned for both chapter houses to allow alumnae see the results. Watch the Facebook page and/or website for information.

The renovations to the Delta Epsilon house are scheduled to be completed in by year end. Once completed, the house will be available to the New Members for informal gatherings and meetings with Monday night dinners beginning in 2104. The house will be available for 50 members to move in as of Fall of 2014. The Delta Alpha chapter house was in need of a more extensive renovation. The outside of the house will change to take on more of a Spanish Colonial look. The rendering shows how the doors and windows

Live with Purpose

LAAAC moving to electronic newsletter Alumnae chapters have been, and continue to be, required to communicate with members at least once a year. Historically, that has taken the required form of a paper newsletter and we will continue to offer the newsletter via paper to those that want it. However, recent changes to the communication policy now allow the LAAAC to communicate via electronic forms of communication if desired. In an effort to save money (we currently print and mail over 1,300 newsletters) and to act responsibly towards the environment, the LAAAC is moving towards distributing our newsletter electronically. A link to the newsletter will be provided to everyone on our email list, via a link on Facebook, and via a link on our website. To opt out of a paper based newsletter, you can do one of the following:  Visit the LAAAC website and enter Opt Out into the Contact Us form  Check the box at the bottom of the Heard on the Rosevines form and include your

email address Your annual support fee helps us defray the costs of printing & mailing.
