A Second Life in First Class

By daring to step away from an established life in the world of finance and pursuing a dream of breaking into the design world, Alain Gilles opened his own studio in Brussels in 2007. Since then, in less than two decades, he has collaborated with giants such asLigne Roset, Bonaldo, BuzziSpace, Greenmood, and many others, to his great delight. We recently spoke with the designer and share here the fruits of his reflections.

HIS PATH TO THE PROFESSION

Gilles recounts that entrepreneurship and the profession of a designer are part of his second life. “I first studied political science, then worked in international finance for nearly five years. Afterwards, I pursued industrial design studies and was hired by a prominent Belgian designer of the time.” This is where he learned the ropes. However, after a few years of feeling restricted in expressing his own creativity, Gilles gained the confidence and maturity needed to take the leap and open his own studio.

TAKING THE PLUNGE

“I was still discovering many things about the profession, and my life experience and advanced age gave me certain skills and advantages.” In creating his own company, Gilles sought the freedom to create what he wanted. “I loved everything related to design, but I hadn't anticipated the challenges of finding clients, managing finances, or running a business.” To succeed, he had to commit fully, despite the uncertainties these new responsibilities brought. “I went out to meet and greet clients, and luck followed.”

ONE HANDSHAKE AT A TIME

Initially, potential clients had no interest in the newcomer starting out in the field. “I wasn't 'bankable', as the English would say.” Despite this, Gilles attended the Milan Salon every year, went to various fairs, met people, honed his senses, and refined his approach.

“I quickly understood the importance of talking to the right person. When entering an exhibition space or showroom, I asked to speak to the person responsible for production or to the artistic director.” If that person was present, Gilles dared to approach them. Otherwise, he left with their business card. Gradually, he filled his contact book which fueled his line of work.

BONALDO

Among the clients won over, Gilles counts the elegant Italian brand Bonaldo. The collaboration with Bonaldo has endured for a long time. After the famous Big Table designed by Gilles for Bonaldo in 2009, here is Padiglioni, launched in 2023. “It is inspired by the iconic Barcelona pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe.”

A PROFESSION OF LISTENING

"My job is also about listening." For some brands Gilles works with, the brief is sometimes non-existent, and the request takes on a simplistic form akin to The Little Prince. Draw me a sheep? Draw me a table, rather. "When you know the brand that commissions you well, you can customize the product based on the manufacturer's production capabilities and its customers’ expectations."

LUCK IS A CHARM

"I was very lucky to carve out a place in the design field so quickly." At 33, when he made the big leap from finance to design, he first turned to industrial design. "We worked on smaller-scale pieces. Objects. Attention to detail was crucial there. However, I wanted to create furniture." And luck smiled on him.

A NEW WORLD

Some seventeen years later, the atmosphere in Alain Gilles' small studio is calm and minimalist. "I work with two French assistants. Today, they are both at home. Since the world has changed, they no longer come to the studio as often. We create via computer. Remote work works well for our team," he confides, looking out the window and onto his garden view.

A BLANK PAGE

His micro-studio, somewhat disorganized by his own admission, is entirely painted white. "I see it as a blank page ready to welcome sketches and creations." Not very skilled at freehand drawing himself, Gilles easily turns to technology to bring his ideas to life. "I don't draw much, but I write a lot. Words inspire me. I write out the ideas lead to the final result."

A PROTOTYPE TO REFINE

“3D drawing becomes a prototype of sorts. Gradually, with my team, we refine elements, focus on details, and often surprise ourselves with the results of our manipulations.”

CONTRASTS & TEXTURES

Embracing technological advances doesn't mean neglecting the sense of touch. “We are currently working with the Croatian brand Milla & Milli on developing a capsule collection highlighting wood and its contrasts.” This collection, which includes a table, a bench, and a shelf, explores the mass of the material. A more intense sanding than usual creates a texture reminiscent of charcoal or lava stone. The wood, usually very smooth, becomes porous. This texture and finish deviate from the traditional classicism associated with wood.

THE MAGIC OF RUGS

In another register, Gilles was approached by the Milanese company Illulian for rug design. These are handmade silk and wool rugs made in Nepal. “It's incredible to see the level of quality found there. I was amazed… and convinced!”

CREATIVE ONE DAY…

Creative always! “As a child, I could draw better than today. I had many ideas and would photograph everything that inspired me.”

This was long before digital cameras. Thus, Gilles developed slides of the textures and objects that sparked his imagination. “I must have been 14 or 15 years old. It cost me a fortune in film development. It became my notebook of sorts.”

ICONIC ONE DAY…

Iconic always! “I often say that a good project, beyond the desired ergonomic aspect, becomes iconic if, when you reduce its image to the size of a postage stamp, you can still recognize

the lines and signature.” For his part, Gilles likes what he calls generous furniture, meaning it considers the users and enhances their experience. In this sense, a table is much more than a table. It is a place for exchange and sharing.

LEAVING A LEGACY

“My father died when I was 12. There is nothing left of his presence on this Earth, except the memories I retain. As a designer, it's like saying I will have a life after death. A legacy left behind. An imprint of my time on Earth.”

STEVE CLEM

From an early age, architect Steve Clem had an affinity for making things, a talent that was handed down from his father. With that seed planted, and later nourished by a love of travel and an inquisitive mind, Steve Clem grew up to be the internationally-renowned architect he is today. He was fortunate to have found the right professional fit at an early age and has been with the Atlantabased firm, TVS, since shortly after graduate school.

We caught up with Clem while exploring the annual Cersaie tile show in Bologna, Italy. He took us through his journey from early days in Alaska to his current work in India and beyond.

ORIGIN STORY

Clem had an extraordinary upbringing, having his early childhood in Alaska and then moving to Florida, and eventually settling in Atlanta where he attended high school. Despite the change of scenery, Clem and his father were always outside building something. “Throughout my upbringing, my father was constantly engaged in some kind of construction project, whether it was erecting a pole barn or undertaking other endeavors. I found myself consistently involved in assisting him with these tasks.”

“When our family ventured to Alaska during the summers, this tradition persisted, and I found myself involved in various interior and exterior building projects. It evolved into a natural inclination for me, a deeply ingrained aspect of who I am, to be actively engaged in constructing something tangible.” Clem's affinity for construction propelled him into summer jobs at lumber yards and airport loading facilities. Eventually, this inclination guided him towards the decision to pursue architecture school.

THE ARCHITECTURE FIRE IS KINDLED

Initially made without much deliberation, this choice unexpectedly blossomed into a fervent passion, revealing a talent and interest he had never recognized within himself before. As a freshman undergraduate, Clem was tasked with a unique assignment: crafting a 3D object using cardboard, akin to sculpture. However, his professor challenged the class to perceive their creations from an architectural perspective. This involved viewing the object not merely as an external structure from the outside-in, but as an interior space, focusing on the negative space within and observing it from the inside-out.

FROM ALASKA TO ATLANTA

For Clem, this moment sparked an epiphany of understanding, illuminating the essence of architecture - the art of spatial creation and manipulation, as well as an awareness of scale. Questions arose: "How does a person relate to the size of a building? What is the significance of one's hand in relation to architectural detail?" This revelation marked the beginning of Clem's profound recognition of the depth and complexity inherent in the field of architecture.

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY

Due to Clem's diligent efforts during his academic journey spanning college and graduate school, he gained interest from multiple prospective employers. However, after careful consideration, he chose to embark on his professional path with TVS in Atlanta.

“So, I've been with the same firm for 46 years.” For the first 12 years, he did predominantly architecture, and later added interior public space design. “I was invited to join an interiors team on an AT&T Technology Center project and ended up leading the interior architecture work. The project was very successful and award-winning. I flourished. I was encouraged to shift my focus and lead the interior design aspect of our firm. So, in 1990, I shifted over to doing interior design as well as architecture as a full-time endeavor, and I've been doing that ever since.”

DIVERSITY KEEPS THINGS FRESH

“As long as you performed within the expectations of the firm and with high ethical standards with design excellence, you pretty much had the freedom to do whatever you wanted to do. In the end, I've worked in every market segment we have, from office interiors, workplaces, performing arts, showrooms, aquariums, and countless unique projects. And along the way I've done it around the world with work in China, Dubai, and now 17 years in India on a project that's one of the most fantastic mixed-use projects that anyone could ever do in their career.”

JIO WORLD CENTRE IN MUMBAI

The India project of which Clem speaks is the Jio World Centre in Mumbai. It began in 2006 with a convention center, offices and retail. “The project grew into a 7.5 million square foot program including a cultural performing arts center, residential, art house, office, clubhouse, retail, etc. And it's all in one 17-acre building. “We just had the opening for the Performing Arts Center last March.”

MUMBAI, HIS HOME AWAY FROM HOME

In 2006, when he was about to go to India, he had a dream conversation with his grandparents, who told him to go and enjoy the experience and the adventure—and why it was so important to them. They worked in the US State Department in the ‘60’s where they lived 3 years in Pakistan and traveled India

extensively. “In Mumbai, I’ve nurtured some amazing global friends. So, when I go there it's like going home. And even though I'm working in the construction trailers and in a huge construction site, I’m leading the design and creating fantastic experiences.”

BIG IDEAS, SMALL DETAILS

“I'm very much a three-dimensional, big ideas, spatial design guy, but I'm also really good at small design and construction details.” This marks the juncture where Clem has truly excelled, particularly through his significant contributions to the Jio World Centre project. His involvement has not only demonstrated his talents but has also elevated them to new heights, showcasing his exceptional abilities and expertise in remarkable fashion.

AN EARLY MENTOR

He has, along the way, gotten to work with some amazing people—especially early in his career—that helped him see the balance between the technical and the poetic—or human—aspects of architecture.

“The guy that hired me has been my mentor for many years, now notable friend, Tom Ventulett, one of the founders of TVS and Design leader. I learned more from him about a point of view on space and experiences and how to look at a building.”

BEING A LEADER

“The selection of finishes and materials have not been my primary passion in the past. I’ve worked with many great interior designers who wake up wanting to do that work. Part of my job is to put the most talented people together to generate the best ideas to create a holistic solution. Through years of work and built projects I have become a good critic and able to marry those things together as a design leader. With advancements in technology and the emergence of new material types, I’ve also begun to uncover a wealth of new progressive materials and finishes that have resulted in a whole new realm of creativity for myself and my teams.”

Clem has played a pivotal role in pioneering numerous material innovations, notably the integration of bespoke Swarovski crystals in the grand theater of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Performing Arts Centre at Jio World Centre. These crystals have been meticulously arranged to form a stunning lotus flower that spans the entirety of the performance hall ceiling. What’s truly remarkable is that each crystal possesses the capability to project images depicting any character, adding an enchanting dynamism to the space.

Furthermore, Clem has delved deeply into the realm of tile craftsmanship, exploring its myriad applications

ranging from mosaic artistry to adorning hardware, embellishing fountains, and water jet cut patterns. His ventures have extended to incorporating large porcelain slabs, showcasing his innovative spirit and dedication to pushing boundaries of design and functionality.

FOR THE LOVE OF TILE

Clem perceives the emergence of newer, large-scale porcelain ceramic tiles as a groundbreaking development, and his firm, TVS, is fully embracing this trend by extensively incorporating gauged thin porcelain tiles in many of their ongoing projects. “The material is truly remarkable,” Clem enthuses. “Their application versatility is unmatched, seamlessly adorning walls and surfaces with minimal joints. Moreover, their remarkable strength and durability come at a fraction of the cost compared to the other heavyweight materials.”

He continues, noting the transformative potential of these tiles, remarking, “We’re able to achieve digital visual effects that faithfully replicate the textures and patterns of stone or metal, opening up boundless creative possibilities for both interior and exterior applications.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Clem has honed his expertise in selecting and utilizing natural stones. However, a pivotal moment arose during the Jio Retail project, where, after overseeing the installation of over a million square feet of marble, he advocated for a shift towards porcelain that mimicked the look of stone. “Not only could we procure it swiftly,” Clem explains, “but it also afforded us greater control over the aesthetic, with the added luxury of being able to swiftly replace damaged panels by arranging for custom printing.”

Reflecting on the material’s evolution within the industry, Clem expresses his awe, stating “Its rapid maturation is truly unprecedented. I can hardly think of any other materials that has undergone such a profound transformation, offering us an unparalleled array of capabilities and options to draw from.”

BEAUTY YOU CAN TOUCH

For the Atlanta Promenade Tower, a project at 1230 Peachtree Street, the firm’s former office building and next door to them now, the firm won a prestigious award in 2023 from Ceramic Tiles of Italy in the Commercial projects category. Work included converting the central stair hall into a social gathering area. “We used full-width porcelain panels on the wall. On the opposite wall, the woodwork came from trees that had been removed from the property a few years earlier to enable another development. I arranged for the wood to be re-sawn and brought back into the building in an artistic way. It coordinates with tile flooring that looks like wood. And most importantly you can touch it. So, you can appreciate the marriage of man-made and nature-made.”

MORE AWARD-WINNING DESIGN

Work on their current building at 1200 Peachtree has also earned accolades, including a 2024 Coverings Installation & Design Award. “The whole exercise for the building was to change it from what had formerly been just a passageway and create social spaces, gathering spaces, people spaces—so you can take a break from your office and go down and get a coffee and do work in the lobby. It's all about people. But it's also about scale.”

IT’S IN THE DETAILS

At 1200 Peachtree, part of the floor consists of a series of hexagons and stretched-out hexagons, executed in white marble-look and wood-look ceramic tile that migrates “like confetti” out into a gray-colored area. To achieve the effect, they laid everything out

and had the gray tile water jet cut so they could drop the other tiles into it. “This became a very dynamic visual and artistic pattern.”

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT

When Clem isn’t jet-setting around the globe, immersed in the world of design and project management, he finds solace in the tranquility of fly fishing. “It’s truly become a cherished pastime of mine,” he reflects. “Every July and August, you’ll find me in Alaska for a minimum of three weeks.” Maintaining a summer home in Alaska, Clem has devoted many years to its construction and expansion, a passion that traces back to his formative years spent building alongside his father.

Clem’s connection to his father extends beyond their shared love for construction. Reflecting on his journey into architecture, Clem shares “It all started with building things with my dad.” Sadly, his father passed away last March, but the family found solace in fulfilling his final wish. “The remarkable thing is, we took his ashes back to Alaska last summer,” Clem recounts. “We scattered them in the trout stream and lake near the house, returning him to nature and our home he cherished so deeply.”

While Clem thrives in the great outdoors, he also harbors a deep passion for woodworking. “Whether its crafting elements for the

house, undertaking renovations, or simply immersing myself in woodworking projects, the joy I derive from it rivals that of any outdoor pursuit,” he shared with a smile.

GO OUTSIDE AND LEARN SOMETHING NEW Clem maintains that you also have to get out of the office when working on a project and realize the project in space. “I've been to some extremely dirty, sweaty, hot construction environments in China, Dubai, India, and Trinidad and yet they all resulted in some amazing enriching experiences. And I've learned from each of those trips and come back and taught someone else what to do or not to do. Or a new approach to what to do.”

NEXT UP

It isn’t all glamorous atriums. Clem’s next project is working on a project with the Georgia Ports Authority. “One of the things I love is getting to know about somebody's business environment. It’s one of the largest ports in the US. They handle shipping containers, receiving and sending them.” He has enjoyed learning the industrial side of the business and figuring out how to translate it back into physical architecture. “One of the things I've really gotten to enjoy because of all of this global travel - I'm just curious about people, where they come from, and what their stories are.”

SHARING THE WEALTH OF HIS KNOWLEDGE

“I don't know what I'm going to do when I stop. This has been my passion and it's what I do. I don't run jobs and much as I sell and create design and then guide other staff, extend my hands to help implement these ideas. Today, part of my job is mentoring them and elevating them for greater things.”

H is for Human Alfredo Häberli

Born a true cosmopolitan in Buenos Aires and making Zurich his home since the vibrant 80s, Alfredo Häberli is a design legend of our era. He describes himself as a mixture of Swiss precision and Latin American emotionality. Known for designs that are reduced and sometimes inventive, his work is consistent and versatile, avoiding trends and exuding a solid and enduring quality that intertwines with material, technology, and time itself. H e has forged partnerships with leading Scandinavian and European companies, including Andreu World, Iittala, Porsche Classic, Kvadrat, Alias, Moroso, Rado, Golfyr, Luceplan, Camper, and many others, solidifying his influence within the design world.

As I sat in the interior garden at the luxurious Westin during the Feria Hábitat Valencia, I basked in the morning sunlight of this beautiful city. Then there he was, Alfredo Häberli, in all his splendor. A tall, well-dressed man with great charisma and a kind smile. To me, he looked very much like a movie star, akin to Richard Gere or Pierce Brosnan, with his white hair and beard. He leaned over to greet me in the European manner, with his unique and mesmerizing aura. The ensuing conversation was genuine and notably humble as we discussed his professional endeavors and personal experiences with warmth and depth.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Born in 1964 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he reflects on his upbringing as turbulent and challenging, describing it as a place where daily perseverance was essential for survival. His brother died very early on, and he also lost his best friend and father. He mentioned that these losses left deep scars on his heart. Nevertheless, Häberli managed to turn his circumstances in a positive way. For him, life always holds great value, and it is a privilege to be alive and to do good all around.

LIFE OF THE PARTY

He studied industrial design at the Höhere Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich, Switzerland, where he honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the intersection between art and functionality. His parents were employed by Swiss Air, affording him the opportunity to travel freely and revel in the nightlife of Paris, Barcelona, and London's popular nightclubs. “I was living it up all the time,” he reminisced, shaking his head. For a moment, he reflected on the vibrant lifestyle of a young adult filled with an ambition to conquer the world.

THE HÄBERLI CLAN

Throughout the years, even though he has appeared on the cover of multiple design magazines and risen to fame (he will despise me using this specific word), he has remained very private about his family life, which he cherishes. Häberli is lovingly married with two kids - now young adults. When his son was born 24 years ago, he experienced an 'Aha' moment and realized that this little human was more important than anything, more than design, and more than his ego. He met his wife at university; she had a career as a graphic designer and now works as a health and wellness coach. His daughter is completing an internship at a studio in Copenhagen in interior design and architecture, and his son studies politics.

WIFE KNOWS BEST

I dare to ask him personal questions about his family dynamics. He shares that his wife is a very good chef, and that they cook a lot together, emphasizing the fact that in the kitchen, he is the humble sous chef who follows her lead - which makes me smile. One of his favorite meals she cooks is Osso Bucco, probably served with fresh wild mushrooms she harvests herself in the forest, a 5-minute bike ride from their house. When sitting around the table as a family, you would bet that rich and meaningful conversations unfold.

ABOVE IT ALL

The family man resides in the Alps with his lovely wife and travels back and forth to Europe to collaborate on numerous multidisciplinary projects with high-level brands, colleagues, and friends who share the same values and mission as his own. An outdoor lover, he enjoys hiking, biking, and going for walks. Zurich, Switzerland, provides him with peace. He enjoys balancing the city-business-trips-life with the Alps lifestyle, which grounds, inspires, and provides him with the space to retreat, to digest the world, to draw, and to experiment in his private studio. 'When I wake up, I have 50 ideas bursting, then I get up and go about my day very energetically.

HÄBERLI APPRECIATES BEAUTY, SPECIALLY HIS PORSCHE 911 BUILT IN 1976. “THERE’S NOTHING THERE THAT ISN’T NECESSARY!” HE SAYS, PRAISING THE LINES OF THE CAR. “THERE’S NO OTHER WAY TO APPROACH PERFECT DESIGN. THE 911 IS SIMPLY UNPARALLELED.”

CRUISIN’ AROUND

“The whole industry is hungry for novelty, for new content; it’s time to degrow, deconstruct”.

He grew up 3 km from a racetrack, and as a kid, he wanted to become a driver. Everything, from the cars to the smell, steered him to cultivate his passion for cars. I imagine him driving in the Alps, cruising away and making detours in his Porsche 77 to empty his mind and unwind. Even with famous neighbors not far from his home, Switzerland is great for living quietly and easily.

VERBAL DOODLING

Published writer, his latest project; a book in two volumes, where Häberli invites us on a journey through his life in design. He opens up about key moments and places that have deeply influenced his approach to design. He introduces us to the major Italian designers, shares the impact of famous icons, and talks about his inspiring interactions with friends in design like Konstantin Grcic, Jasper Morrison, or Patricia Urquiola. There are also stories about visionary entrepreneurs and the places and objects that have shaped his design philosophy. The second volume becomes personal: Häberli has invited thirty individuals from his network to ask him one pressing question each. With humour and honesty, he provides answers that reveal profound insights into his way of thinking. Among those asking questions are leading figures in design, critical thinkers, architects, journalists, and creative directors like Stephen Bayley, Tyler Brûlé, Francesca Molteni, and Alice Rawsthorn.

IMPLICITLY CHANGING THE WORLD

His dream is to design an object that people would hold everyday of their life without even realizing it (like a pen or a toothbrush) to change the world in an invisible but obvious way. For the creator, the context, and the sociological approach are the foremost important aspects he assesses when first drafting ideas. It was all about the added value and quality of life. The Häberli equation goes as follows; Great Design + Quality = Sustainability.

WELCOME TO ANDREU WORLD

We met the evening before at the special media event held by Andreu World at their head office for the launch of their latest projects (Afuera and Dado, two modular outdoor sofa collections) with the designer where the brand and Alfredo were kind enough to hold a private visit, immersive presentation, and serve a delectable Mediterranean meal to enjoy La Buena Vida (the Good Life).

“You don’t need a dozen chairs; you need one chair that is timelessly designed. As designer, we have a responsibility. We are the starting point of sustainability”.

THE DESIGNER IS THE MESSAGE

The designer describes the process of creating in collaboration with Andreu World as working among friends. And he would not have it in any other way! He supports the brand commitment to sustainability. “The whole industry is hungry for novelty, for new content; it’s time to degrow, deconstruct”. He praised Andreu World Circular Design program and their lifetime warranties. “You don’t need a dozen chair; you need 1 chair that is timelessly designed. As designer, we have a responsibility. We are the starting point of sustainability”.

The legacy of Alfredo Häberli is designed to last.

MANIC MONDAYS

A glimpse into the life of 44-year-old Rafael Payare, Musical Director and Conductor of the Montréal Symphony Orchestra, starts at 6ish with his youngest daughter's wake-up call. After the family breakfast, he then oversees his older daughter's violin and piano practices, followed by routine daddy duties, including school and daycare drop-offs. Then, he treats himself to a well-deserved “secundo doppio ristretto” at a local coffee shop before heading off for “a day at the office”… so to speak!

YOUTHFUL & SOULFUL

Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare, described by the Los Angeles Times as “electrifying in front of an orchestra,” enters his second season as the Music Director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (OSM) and his fifth as the Music Director of the San Diego Symphony (SDS) in the 2023-24 season.

90 YEARS OF APPLAUSE

This season, the OSM celebrates its 90th musical season. In addition to continuing to explore Mahler's music, Payare and the Orchestra will delve into a repertoire ranging from Beethoven's First Symphony to more contemporary pieces such as Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring.

MONTRÉAL

AWAITS

After being invited to succeed Mæstro Nagano at the helm of the OSM, Payare arrived in Montréal in the winter of 2021, amid the pandemic, with a smile on his face and music in his ears.

His love for Montréal is evident as he shares his favorite spots, such as Laurier Street with its iconic restaurants like Leméac and Chez Lévêque, as well as the cherished L'Express on SaintDenis. Not to mention Brasserie Monarque in the Old Port, which captivates him with its convivial atmosphere and delicious offerings like bone marrow and Burgundy snails. It's clear; Montréal has become his playground, muse, and home.

A CITY OF DESIGN

“Design is everywhere. It’s in the spaces we inhabit, the schedules we make for ourselves, the meals we prepare for our family and friends… the way we compose our time, our space and our experiences.”… “The way we compose”, what an appropriate choice of words, I think to myself.

And then, I naturally dare to ask the question that arises on its own. “A composition… Like in music?” “Exactly,” replies the Maestro. “Exactly.” For Rafael, successful design is reflected in the harmony of the composition and is simply found everywhere. Like a musical composition, written note by note, it is conceived as a whole to evoke emotion and create a harmonious environment.

MTL.DESIGN

What a pleasure to discover and conquer this colorful, eclectic metropolis, stumbling upon design hotspots along the way. Without hesitation, he proudly names Montréal fashion designer Philippe Dubuc, as well as EQ3, a carefully timeless Canadian furniture line.

MONTRÉAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

A SYMPHONIC GEM

An example of successful design, according to Rafael's expert opinion, is undoubtedly the Maison Symphonique itself, which he describes as “an incredible gem.” Inaugurated in 2011 and designed by the consortium of architects Diamond Schmitt and Ædifica, the Maison Symphonique is renowned for its exceptional acoustics. And if there's anyone capable of confirming the acoustic excellence of the hall, it's the one who, from one concert to the next, from one ovation to the next, masterfully conducts the 150 musicians and singers before an audience of 1,800 spectators night after night.

When discussing the architectural and acoustical marvel that is the renowned Montréal Symphony House, Payare emphasizes that not all new orchestra halls are success stories. Indeed, many fail to preserve the je-ne-sais-quoi sound of classical music halls and instead foster a clinical and disconnected atmosphere. “The sound here is both perfectly clear and deeply layered.” It's truly magical!

SITCOMS

& THEME SONGS

Celebrated worldwide for his musical brilliance, it's no wonder that Rafael finds music in every corner… much like design, actually! So, how does he manage to turn off the music? The answer might amuse and surprise you! “For years now, I've done the same thing every night to quiet my mind and fall asleep. I put on an episode of Friends. I know the script by heart by now. It's actually how I learned to speak English!”

DREAM BIG

Seeing that I'm meeting a charismatic man with a cheerful spirit, I throw in an unexpected question to wrap up the interview. “Tell me, Rafael, if you could host a dream dinner party with three personalities from present or past times, who would your guests be and what would you serve them?”

After a brief, enthusiastic, and surprised laugh, Rafael confidently delved into choosing his guests and crafting his dream dinner menu!

“Easy. First, it would be Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. For his sense of humor. (Notice how he spelled out his last name, middle name, and first name to emphasize the character!) Second, it would be Leonardo DaVinci, he is a genius in so many fields. And third… third would be… I'd choose someone… It would have to be someone… Oh… I've got it. Anthony Hopkins. He loves whisky and is said to play the piano marvelously. We'd have champagne and oysters, a hearty meat, whisky, and dessert.”

That sounds F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! Where can I get myself a ticket to be a fly on that wall!

Daniel

Drapeau, CEO of Miralis is known for his audacity.

“Expect the unexpected” is somewhat of a life mantra for the go-getter that played his first hand in business when he was a mere teen.

TEENS TODAY

Any parent today would be flabbergasted by a 15-year old son that actually launched his first enterprise out of a passion for track and field. And yet, back then, Dan was that guy… the one that ran a small import and sales sports equipment business with a friend of his while studying for high school math quizzes and handing in book reports.

“I was pretty shy until I found a passion and discovered a certain talent in sports. Bang, bang, bang… from there on, everything opened up! Self-confidence was born within me, and I came out of my shell.” And over time, the dream took shape: one in which he would become an entrepreneur. To get there, he set off to achieve three challenges: to properly learn english, to acquire some solid management experience, and to one day “do big business.”

THE STORY GOES

Upon turning thirty, Dan had triumphed over the three challenges he'd set for himself. Feeling up for a new chapter in life, he began chatting about leaving the Montréal scene and returning to Rimouski. Ah, the twists and turns of life! That's when a friend chimed in, bubbling with excitement about Miralis and its sixty-year-young owner on the lookout for successors.”

BELIEVE & GROW

Here is a man with innovative ideas who returned to his corner of the world in Bas Saint-Laurent, taking over Miralis in 2009, and who succeeded in turning the company around while in the midst of a global recession. He transformed its business model in less than ten years, just in time to embark on a significant and far-reaching expansion… and, another bombshell fell, the pandemic of the century closed everything down for a while.

Darn! Simply stating the various hardships Dan had to navigate through over the years makes me sea sick and queasy. And yet, Dan persevered and succeeded in making his vision, a longlasting and creative reality.

THEN & NOW

When he took over, Dan made a bold statement and a 180-degree transitional move to bring the company to what it is today: America’s large-scale manufacturer known both for building kitchen cabinets and transforming counters, hence offering a complete scope of kitchen design.

“Back then, I was told that focusing solely on kitchen cabinetry was a risky move. The way I saw it, it was the way to ensure a promising future in which innovation would play a much larger role.”

AT THE GATES OF HAPPINESS

Located in Saint-Anaclet-de-Lessard, at the gateway to Gaspésie, Miralis' headquarters welcomes every day some 270 talents driven by the company's values of innovation, family spirit, rigorous agility, commitment, and positive attitude.

“Innovation guides each and every one of our decisions and across all departments.” But talking the talk is easy. Every selfrespecting company claims innovation as a value of theirs, right? But how does a company, made of individual bodies and minds, actually walk the talk, onwards and forward, together and over time? For Drapeau, walking the talk meant finding a way to quantitatively measure innovation. BAM!

36-2-1

Did I neglect to mention this man studied quantum physics before making his way in the business realm? Let’s not be surprised if he found an effective and inspiring way to actually measure, track and lead innovation as a core company value and sustained mission.

The magic formula is quantified as 36-2-1. It represents the goal of achieving 36 product evolutions per year, two “wow factor” innovations that will generate additional volumes and open up markets yearly and one “bold” innovation launched every two years, an exclusivity that emerges from left field, surprises, and raises the bar.

A HOMEMADE RECIPE

And the recipe works! The measure pleases Miralis' privileged partners who know and expect innovative solutions to pop up year after year. “We are perceived as trend setters and therefore strive to interpret trends in a logical and lasting way. It takes two years to launch a bold innovation on the market. To make it worthwhile, it needs to be both trend-setting and long-lasting.”

EVIDENCE IN THE MATTER

A new annual product innovation recently launched consists of an ultra-resistant wood tint finish while a well-awaited bold innovation soon-to-be-seen will be the factory-integrated LED option for kitchen cabinetry. The light will operate much like the one we see inside our fridge, but in a sleeker, clever and bright design.

In fact, Miralis is adding two new very automated plants to better service its growing market from one ocean to the other and south of the border. While a Rimouski add-on will produce the company’s bread-and-butter kitchen cabinetry, the Québec City plant will exclusively transform sintered stone into slender kitchen countertops, making it the first of its kind in North America.

This pursuit of innovation, fundamental in Daniel's vision implemented at Miralis, is also seen through the expansion of robotic and automated processes over time. Instead of eliminating jobs, this automation of production has elevated the nature of tasks and made the work less repetitive and more stimulating for all involved. As a matter of fact, the number of employees has tripled since Dan took over Miralis in 2009 and instilled such changes. Bravo!

PLEASURE DOING BUSINESS

Here, humans remain at the heart of the values. And communication is key. “We have fun at work. And all the other elements fall into place!”

FULL CIRCLE

Remember how track and field changed this boy’s life at 15? Well, Miralis gave back to Dan’s home turf community by funding a state-of-the-art track and field facility in Rimouski. What a great way to give back in a meaningful and full circle way!

BUILDING HIS HAPPY FORT

“I find happiness easily... it's the little joys that are of great importance!”. So, how does he manage to be a happy sailor in life? With hearty breakfasts in the morning, the pleasure of being surrounded by loved ones, quality time spent with friends and family, the energy of others, smiles, and the beloved Gaspésie region,

its rivers full of salmon… Hallelujah! A lifelong athlete, Daniel skis in the winter, and, fly fishes, fly fishes, fly fishes, come summer.

DAY IN, DAY OUT

“On weekdays, I’m a go-getter that walks the talk”, says the man who prefers to talk less and do more!”. “On weekends, I shut down my businessman settings completely and turn into what my friends describe as a woodsy weirdo, trading in my suits for flannel shirts and enjoying good old nature fun, fully and sometimes foolishly!”. And so it goes… in the beautifully inspiring coastal setting of Québec’s enchanting Gaspésie region.

ANY PLANS FOR RETIREMENT?

Still far from ready to trade his suits for full-time hunting shirts, Daniel sometimes allows himself to think about the days ahead. What will the after-Miralis days be like, he wonders? His answer is inspiring. “I’ll seek a quest and conquest of the little joys that make me happy, pure and simple.” One can then easily imagine him, fly fishing rod in hand, on the banks of a beautiful salmon river, with his family, friends, and his Chesapeake Bay Retriever Scarlette at his faithful side, living in the present moment and seizing the day. Carpe Diem!

HÉLÈNE FORTIN

The architect and associate of LG2 Architecture shares her journey with us and leads us, in passing, to explore the cobbled streets of Québec City, appreciate the architecture of Haute-Savoie, indulge in tartiflettes, and admire the mountains.

THE HAND AT PLAY

By trading her flourishing career in traditional architecture and the beautiful hills of San Francisco to become the head of architecture at a Montréal-based communication agency aiming to add brand experience to its portfolio, Hélène took, I quote, “the biggest risk of my career.” What unfolded over the next decade demonstrates that taking risks, breaking barriers, and working differently bears fruit in a truly inspiring manner.

THE CANDIDATE

Born and raised in Québec City, Hélène obtained her bachelor degree in architecture at Université Laval before completing her studies at UQAM in Montréal and heading off for the coveted campus of Harvard University, specializing in Design Thinking.

Throughout her practice, Hélène has always sought to reinvent the art of design by dissolving the boundaries between physical space, design, and technology. Her multidisciplinary approach has always focused on the synergy between branding, graphic design, strategy, experience design, and communication. It goes without saying that she embodied the perfect candidate for the challenge undertaken by LG2 at that time.

SIDEKICKS & VISIONARIES

While working for conventional architectural firms in San Francisco, Hélène’s more creative side continued to take on personal, often smaller, and much more creative projects. Her focus on humans, feelings and emotions when conceiving a space did not go unnoticed. That’s when, some ten years ago, the opportunity of breaking down barriers came knocking.

Claude Auchu, CEO of Canada’s largest independent creative agency offered her a whole new world. A job title and a department and corporate culture to literally design from scratch!

INVOKING EMOTIONS

With Hélène's arrival and the creation of LG2 Architecture, the agency became a “one-stop shop” where the ultimate focus was on the client, who is none other than the brand itself. This led to exceptionally creative projects that highlight and bring to life the emotion of the brand, its DNA, and the fibers that compose it.

One thinks notably of the famous poutinerie Ashton in Québec City, the Montréal wine bar Annette, and the fabulous stunt designed for the clothing brand American Apparel, amongst others.

ONE BRAND, ONE EXPERIENCE

The AAGallery designed to highlight the American Apparel brand amazed by its brilliant brand experience essence. The concept was pure genius. It chose to focus on one single standout item… the brand’s famous 2001 classic black t-shirt.

In doing so, the museum-like storytelling concept offered consumers an immersive and customized brand experience and gave Hélène the opportunity to do what she enjoys most in her

AMERICAN APPAREL – THE AART GALLERY / BY LG2 ARCHITECTURE

line of work: collaborating with talents from other disciplines: writers, printers, artists… you name it… and brainstorming ideas to give each brand, its brand experience.

A CULTURAL PHENOMENON

Another eloquent example of successful integration of brand experience into architecture can be found in the recent revitalization of Ashton restaurants, an iconic institution in the Québec City region.

For those unfamiliar with the aura of Ashton, a bit of context is necessary. More than just a popular spot for night owls seeking a delicious poutine after a festive night, Ashton embodies a true cultural phenomenon, a local icon that fills residents with pride and attracts tourists from afar in search of an authentic experience.

When Mireille Côté, a colleague of Hélène's and president of the LG2 office in Québec City, learned that Ashton restaurants had been acquired by a young couple eager to revive this institution, she immediately grabbed her phone, offering the agency's services with the enthusiasm of a devoted fan.

A NATIONAL TREASURE

“How do you redefine and rejuvenate a crowds favorite without messing around with the values and spirit that made it famous? Gladly, we were working with a fun pallet of colors, textures, fonts and iconography. We know our job is done if once all logos removed, we still know which brand space we’re in.”

And that's exactly what happened with the redesign of the Ashton spaces. “We managed to preserve the vintage aspect of the beloved place, the neon lights, and the appetizing typography that whets the appetite and encourages indulgence.” The reception from everyone, both at the bars' exits and during other peak hours, was incredibly warm because the brand's values remained the same. As quantifiable proof of the successful outcome, the cash register even rang! This means that the new owners noticed a 35% increase in sales following this refurbishment of the premises.

PREACHING BY EXAMPLE

In 2020, on the brink of a global pandemic that was to result in a widespread closure of offices, no one could have predicted that it would lead to a post-pandemic redefinition of workspaces and

workspace needs. However, it was in this context that LG2 was penciling in final touches to its new 45,000 sq. ft. office space blueprints.

EMBRACING THE FUTURE

All bets are off! In one viral stroke, office plans become completely obsolete, and Hélène and her team return to the drawing board, figuratively speaking. In fact, pencils and drawings are set aside as soon as a concept begins to take shape in the minds of the talents Hélène leads day after day. They embrace the power of 3D modeling and photorealistic image creation, 100% of the time. Why? To fully visualize the experience of future users.

A LOOK BACK IN TIME

Hélène notices a unifying trait among her younger colleagues… this desire to connect to office life and see it as a social anchor in their daily routine. “Ten years ago”, Hélène confides, “I would have found it dull to design office spaces.” Things have changed since. Indeed, since the advent of the COVID, employers have transformed themselves into brands and engaged in the client

seduction game to attract and retain top talent. “How stimulating it is to imagine and implement ideas that attract talent, foster collaboration, and promote innovation.”

“Designing office spaces, might they be for accountants and lawyers, or IA brains and IT techs, is not about choosing furniture pieces and carpet tiles anymore. It’s about retaining talents and defining a stimulating work experience.” Enters LG2, ready to adapt and mirror all DNAs.

“MONT” MONTRÉAL-QUÉBEC

A true Montréal enthusiast, Hélène, accompanied by her loyal partner and accomplice of 25 years, jumped into the LG2 adventure ten years ago, making the back streets of RosemontPetite-Patrie her family nest, where 12-year-old Odile and 11-year-old Léon blossom Mondays through Fridays.

When the weekend comes rolling in, the Montréalers head to the countryside, or the lakeside to be more precise. They head off to the cottage in Lac Beauport and spring to the mountains for tales of adventure and freedom. And yes, this woman has an extreme adventurous side that she shares with her heirs and the daring father of her daredevil children. This businesswoman, enamored with nature, doesn't just admire the splendor of the mountains; she conquers their steep ridges, maneuvering through trees and rocks while engaging in the extreme sport of downhill mountain biking.

“How stimulating it is to imagine and realize ideas that attract talent, stimulate collaborations, and foster innovations.”

FULL-FACE PROTECTION

Can you dare imagine zipping down a mountain, stooped on a two-wheel handlebar-navigated extreme sport equipment? Well, now envision Hélène in full-face helmet gear followed by her beau and their two teens-to-be, mountain biking through rocks and trees and daring their life with every stroke of the pedal and turn of the handlebar.

“I have to focus S-O-O-O much on the present when I'm mountain biking… my life is literally at stake! So, I completely clear my mind and connect fully to the present. I've developed a real passion and shared enjoyment with my family.”

PART OF THE GANG

For a friendly, upbeat woman like Hélène, life is a pleasure to be enjoyed and to be shared with loved ones. You'll find her at neighborhood back-alley happy hours on weeknights and campfire gatherings over the weekend.

“I love the energy of the metropolis, the great dining experiences, the loud and busy restaurants… the buzz of the city. I also enjoy playing outdoors, being on the mountainside, and experiencing thrills.”

CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN

…And mountain bike your way down them! I’d say that sums up Hélène’s cherished life leisures and goes to show she’s a gutsy adrenaline seeker and a whimsical nature lover out to enjoy life at its fullest.

Her all-time favorite spot in the world… “La Haute-Savoie. Hands down.” Agreed!

Based in Montreal, LG2 Architecture specializes in the design of memorable brand environments. Its strength lies in a multidisciplinary vision of spatial design and a close-knit collaboration with LG2’s integrated teams.

Every project goes beyond aesthetic and practical aspects to create a seamless experience.

LG2 Architecture’s projects are deeply rooted in the DNA of the brands it partners with.

In 2022, two young entrepreneurs with a vision of expansion acquired the Quebec poutine institution Ashton. To fully embrace this new beginning, the design concept was completely overhauled, seamlessly blending modern touches with traditional elements rooted in the brand’s history. The transformation can be seen from the outer shell to the interior details. All the hallmarks of classic diners were revisited with a modern twist: the curved edges throughout, the triple red line marking out the customer path and wrapping around the furniture, the neon lighting and the red tin roof are all reminiscent of Ashton’s original 1969 food truck.

Signature product & furniture Designer Alain Gilles The Studio Brussels, Belgium alaingilles.com

THINK BIG

Gilles opened his own studio in late 2007 to follow his dreams and develop his unique approach to product design, furniture design, art direction, and interior architecture. Since then, he has collaborated with several prestigious international contemporary furniture brands.

I-C-O-N-I-C

The turning point in Gilles's career came with the creation of the BIG TABLE for the Italian brand Bonaldo in 2009. This iconic design not only became a best-seller but also defined a new category in the market, solidifying Gilles's reputation.

FOLLOW THE RHYTHM!

Away from the drafting table, Gilles shares his love for electronic music, citing its experimental nature as a constant source of inspiration. In the realm of travel, Gilles recently fell in love with Faro in the south of Portugal during a family vacation. He expresses admiration for the “25hours hotels” in various cities, appreciating their vibrant atmospheres and unique experiences.

LISTEN UP!

Reflecting on career advice, Gilles emphasizes the importance of following one's instincts and self-belief while remaining open to constructive input.

Director Melbourne School of Design

Deputy Dean

Alan PERT

Faculty of Architecture Building & Planning at the University of Melbourne Melbourne, Australia

PEOPLE AND PLACES

Professor Alan Pert became Director of Melbourne School of Design in October 2012 and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Architecture Building & Planning at the University of Melbourne in 2021. He also sits as Chair of IBA Melbourne, a design research Lab dedicated to the advancement of design innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an intensive dialogue with construction practices.

OF SCOTTISH DNA

“I was born and raised on the West Coast of Scotland, overlooking the River Clyde where many great ships were built. The art of manufacturing and crafting is simply in his hometown’s DNA. “It was my father’s past-time as a bigpipe maker that truly introduced me to workshops and the wonderful world of design.”

FROM BLACK TO TARTAN

“I designed many black buildings over the years and now find my current preoccupation as a displaced Scot lies in showcasing the rich history of tartan… the constructed magic made of multiple colors crossing over one another.”

NURTURED BY NATURE

He is currently immersed in the writing, thinking and drawing of Ian McHarg’s story, a Scottish landscape architect, writer and educator, famous for conceiving what we, today, refer to as GIS. In doing so, Pert finds out they were both actually born a few blocks away from one another and finds himself reflecting on how a place shapes the way people are and think.

PAST AND PRESENT

Alan now calls Melbourne his home, a city he says has completely reoriented his sense of place. For tens of thousands of years, the lands and waterways of the Yarra and Port Phillip regions had been walked and cared for by men, women and children of the Kulin nations. The continuing culture of the First Peoples offers a fertile and deep-rooted vision of human values embedded in and with the geographic topography. It must feel quite humbling.

“Nurtured lands and culture throughout millennia pass knowledge from generation to generation and encourage the diversity we know today.”

Ana SEGOVIA

Creative director & co-founder Odosdesign Valencia, Spain odosdesign.com

CRAFTING DREAMS

After completing her industrial design studies in Valencia and Milan, Ana Segovia co-founded the ODOSDESIGN design and multidisciplinary studio in 2002.

DELICIOUS DESIGN

Ana Segovia's childhood dream was brimming with creativity. At just 8 years old, she yearned to be a pastry chef, her passion leading her to request an oven for her birthday to craft intricate cakes. Little did she know, this early fascination for creation would lay the foundation for her future in design.

SWEET DEBUT

The pivotal moment arrived when Ana encountered her teacher, Manuel Lecuona, and attended the Salon Nude at Feria Valencia in 2002. It was there that Ana and Luis debuted as ODOSDESIGN (multidisciplinary design firm), marking the beginning of a remarkable 22-year journey in the design industry. “Design helps us make our lives easier and, if possible, more beautiful.”

DELIGHTFUL WINS

Ana's first professional foray occurred in 2001 at Marco Giunta's architecture studio in Milan, where her motivation and determination fueled her endeavors. It was Ana's collaboration with Gandia Blasco later in 2005 that propelled her career forward. Ana's proudest achievement lies in her work with Danaoliving, where creativity culminated in a project that continues to inspire.

VIBRANT VALENCIA

Today, Ana calls Valencia home, drawn to its vibrant culture, sunny skies, and scenic landscapes. Amidst the city's thriving design scene, she finds both inspiration and fulfillment in her work. For relaxation, Ana's wanderlust leads her to the tranquil shores of Menorca, where she finds comfort amidst the island's natural beauty.

From humble professional beginnings in the basement of Diane Legge Kemp's office, Betsy learned the value of precision and efficiency. Under the guidance of a seasoned architect, she absorbed every lesson, laying the groundwork for her future endeavors.

THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

Guided by the sage advice of mentors like Brian Healy, she learned to eschew trends and embrace her own unique vision. It's this authenticity that defines her work. Her career was catapulted by the House in Frogs Hollow, a project that remains etched in her memory. Yet, for Betsy, the true measure of success lies not in past achievements but in the relentless pursuit of excellence with each new endeavor. “It is always the last project completed, as each project is so special.”

HUMANIST APPROACH

Looking towards the future, Betsy sees a landscape ripe with potential, where design is driven by a humanist approach, creating spaces that foster community and connection.

BRANDING BEYOND BOUNDARIES

Known for her great expertise in brand design, Carolina develops customized projects in cities ranging from Shanghai to hometown Milan and teaches design and branding at NABA Milano since 2018. Her humanistic approach is captivating.

ASTRONOMICAL DREAMS

“When I was little, I dreamed of being an explorer, or even an astronaut!” This curiosity to explore unbeaten paths is a fuel for work and life in general. In many ways, the astronaut wannabe’s line of work allows her to explore beyond the known and into the unseen.

ARTFUL ANTENNAS

Her passion for art, culture and fashion came from the womb. My mother is a journalist and managed the influential fashion magazine Grazia. My father was a CEO most passionate about art and design himself. Growing up surrounded by design, immersed young in a world always at l’avant-garde and full of strong stimuli, certainly nourished Carolina’s sense of style and sharpened her curiosity antennas.

FROM IDEA TO ID

This goes to say that the strong imprints of her upbringing reflect onto the cultural approach she applies to her work to which she applies a functional and rational process to transform an idea into a brand ID.

DIVING INTO THE DEEP END

“I enjoy working closely with companies that aim to establish a highly defined identity for themselves by delving deeply into their distinctive traits and values.”

“I’ve always seeked a quest to know the unknown, to see beyond boundaries.”

A NAIVE MELODY

He's a nomad that knows no boundaries. Raised by diplomatic parents in Metz, he lived in Dakar, Caracas, Buenos Aires, Rome, Milano, and Amsterdam, and now calls New York City his hometown.

ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDINGS

“When I was 17, I spent 4 months in the Syrian desert near the Eufrate doing Archeological excavation.” That was long before Gabriele discovered design. In the Syrian desert though, he did discover incredible artifacts dug up from 4,000 years ago. “The experience made me understand the importance of crafts and the value objects may carry to communicate and bring stories to life, to our communities and to our future generations.”

LESS AND MORE

Today, Gabriele transposes the revelations he made back in those desert days to his convictions about the role his profession may play in the survival of our species. “We need to produce and consume less, quantity-wise, and more, quality-wise, focusing on objects that can withstand the test of time, be repaired and reused.”

ALESSI QUALITY

Speaking of high-quality objects that communicate and bring stories to life, Gabriele had the pleasure to dive into the Alessi design experience as a young design student, way back when. “The workshops I had with Alessi creatives definitely fueled my passion and set me on the radically relentless and fulfilling design journey I am on since.”

A FIELD OF DREAMS

“What motivates me in my field is to constantly try to innovate, and to do so, as a team, picking each other's brains to evolve and come up with scientific, technological, social, emotional, cultural, functional, and sustainable innovations“.

“Be humble. Curious. Resilient. Exude passion and always cherish and nurture a certain child-like naivety in expressing creativity.”

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND

Hans is widely renowned for his experience and expertise in the art and science of enhancing interiors with a specialty niche in maritime hospitality projects.

WONDER AWAY

His reminisces transported him to the realms of his childhood imagination—a realm where he dreamt of donning a spacesuit and embarking on celestial odysseys among the stars. “Le Petit Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a cherished childhood companion, painted vivid landscapes of adventure across planets, instilling in him a profound fascination with space exploration.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF A GIANT

Guided by the visionary Philippe Starck, Hans found himself enamored by the whimsical and sophisticated designs that transcended mere functionality. Starck's iconic “Champagne Round Bar in the Royalton Hotel in NYC” captivated Hans' imagination, setting him on a trajectory that would shape the course of his professional endeavors.

IMMERSIVE DESIGN

Among the myriad projects that punctuate Hans' career, one stands out as a beacon of pride—the Celebrity Reflection Ultimate Penthouse suite. This crowning achievement, adorned with technological innovations and cutting-edge design, earned him accolades from the esteemed Society of British International Design. The project's pièce de resistance —a shower cantilevered over the ship's facade— embodied Hans' ethos of pushing the boundaries of design to create unparalleled experiences.

AUGMENTED CREATIVITY

Hans finds boundless inspiration in the creativity and ingenuity of students. As a mentor and educator, he witnesses firsthand the innovative solutions and fresh perspectives that fuel the next generation of designers. Moreover, Hans embraces the transformative potential of AI in design, harnessing its power to augment his creativity and efficiency in client projects.

DAILY REMINDERS OF BEAUTY

Stellar educator and architect Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter has forged educational pathways and launched programs that support her vision of education for all. Now a faculty member of the Architecture Department at California’s largest community college East Los Angeles College, she has also taught at Cornell, Yale, Bartlett, SCI-Arc and Woodbury.

HOME SWEET HOME

Ingalill radiates! There’s no surprise in hearing she is a major fan of colors. “In all and everything! In clothing and reading material, in teaching and design styles!” The epitome of joy comes from mixing and matching patterns and colors, fabrics and art pieces collected along her travels and surrounding herself of these “daily reminders of beautiful memories with friends and family and places visited.”

A WOMAN ON A MISSION

“I am most proud of the renovation that my firm, W-ROAD, completed for the Los Angeles Mission, a 156,000 sq. ft. shelter for the homeless. The new design addresses the reorientation of the programmatic needs of the Mission and includes a ‘home unit’, as well as a rooftop café and urban farm.”

EQUALITY = DIVERSITY

As a strong advocate of equal access to education, Ingalill believes the key to greater racial equity and economic diversity in architecture springs from elevating the quality of the broad range of schools students attend.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER

Ergo, after 20 years of teaching and serving as Dean at private institutions, she now teaches architecture at East Los Angeles Community College and volunteers as the President of Architecture for Communities, a non-profit focused on introducing students and citizens to the power of architecture. “At ACLA, I found a group of people who love what I love: the optimism of architecture, the transformative power of education, the value of community outreach and the joy of giving back.”

Jerry VAN EYCK

!melk landscape architecture & urban design

New York, New York, United States melk.global

STICK TO YOUR INTUITION

!melk’s founding principal Jerry van Eyck possesses an unusual breadth and depth of skills that he applies to every project under his purview. The agency’s designs seek to exude an inherent positive spirit, focusing on the element of allure and surprise to create meaningful places that are of-the-place.

ROCKET LAUNCH

While Jerry was a student at the design academy in Eindhoven, Netherlands, he worked on the design of the Schouwburgplein in his hometown Rotterdam. The project ultimately became a globally celebrated project and pushed the boundary limits of contemporary landscape architecture. A few years later, Jerry joined the firm responsible for the design of the project where he became partner until he branched out and founded !melk, moving his practice and life to NYC.

LEADER OF A ROCK BAND

Fun fact: Jerry wanted to sing in a rock band when growing up. Imagine him in the spotlight, wearing a magenta suit - a color he fancies for its uplifting, bold and happy feel. Instead, he leads a creative team of landscaping wizards.

WORDS OF WISDOM

“With every new project, comes experience gained and a certain expansion of one’s natural intuition for creativity.”

On a constant quest for momentum, Van Eyck leads his team into taking on new challenges and solving problems through originality. The pay-off? “Seeing our designs come to life and being embraced by people.”

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE

Jerry ponders on the future of the profession and wonders if it’s becoming harder to maintain the integrity and the purity of the creative process in a world in which AI offers “alternatives”. “I’m starting to foresee myself as becoming a dinosaur in the very near future and will be a very proud one as I am convinced that originality, art and creativity is a human quality, and thus, will always prevail.”

“I hope to always keep learning and never reach the peak of my career.” Onwards and upwards!
THE SCHOUWBURGPLEIN IN ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS, WAS DESIGNED WHILE JERRY WAS STILL A STUDENT AT THE DESIGN ACADEMY IN EINDHOVEN. A FEW YEARS LATER JERRY JOINED THE FIRM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESIGN OF THE PROJECT (THE ROTTERDAM-BASED FIRM "WEST 8") WHERE HE BECAME PARTNER UNTIL FOUNDING "!MELK" IN NEW YORK IN 2010.)

SPACE DOCTOR

Mexican architect, founding partner of award-winning architecture firm SPACE, Juan Carlos Baumgartner impressively made the Forbes magazine cut, listed amongst the most creative Mexicans in the world. Meet the adrenaline-seeking motosportenthusiast proud father of three.

BORN FOR THIS

Juan Carlos never had an existential career search crisis.

“I simply always knew I wanted to be an architect.” Somewhere along his studies, he came across an environmental psychology class, and from that moment on, he began to be passionate about the relationship between architecture and human behavior.

THE MARATHON OF THE PROFESSION

Fresh out of school, Juan Carlos was selected to represent his country in an international design competition. Rewarded with the top prize, he soon attracted interest that opened business opportunities in the United States. These open doors would eventually change and define the course of his career.

NEUROARCHITECTURE

His firm advocates an approach based on neuroscience knowledge applied to space design. “What ignites me most in the profession is creating spaces that will have positive impacts on the health, the performance and the well-being of its users.”

WHAT’S UP, DOC?

“I think too many architects design without seeking evidence of the impact of their designs on human beings, and that is a real shame.” In looking forward, Juan Carlos believes the future of architecture will seek to heal our planet and its people, rather than merely designing neutral spaces that do not add harm to either or both. “Architects will be like space doctors, prescribing designs that will hack people’s symptoms and make them feel better.” Like an MD writing out prescriptions.

She now leads global partnership and marketing strategies at Pantone, where she transforms color into creative storytelling for large-scale brands such as Nespresso, Motorola, H&M, and many others.

EMBRACING OWNERSHIP

With a go-getter attitude, she never shies away from going above and beyond the confines of her role. It’s not just about ticking off tasks on a list, it’s about seizing opportunities to elevate projects, ideas and innovations to new heights.

WHAT’S ITS PANTONE?

During her tenure at Pantone, Kimberly has encountered an array of stunning colors, with warm, radiant shades of yellow holding a special place in her heart. These shades symbolize home and happiness, evoking memories of the sunshine’s glow on summer afternoons where she grew up in Florida.

SPIRITS LIFTED

“The song that never fails to lift my spirits is 'Don't Stop Me Now' by Queen,” she shares, noting her dad’s influence as a major Queen fan. By age eight, she knew all the lyrics to “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Queen’s music is a nostalgic energy burst, connecting her to moments with her dad and motivating her personally and professionally.

“If you have the strategic foresight and capability to push boundaries and drive progress, march confidently in the direction you know you're capable of, and embrace ownership of your journey, making your own unique mark on the world.”

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE

Koorosh Shojaei has gained over a dozen years of experience in Automotive and Industrial Design tested and proven in locations such as Iran, Malaysia, Turkey, Austria, Italy, and now, Germany.

NATURE OR NURTURE

“As I always loved to craft things with my own hands and work wood, I saw myself growing up and becoming either a carpenter or a painter.” He might have inherited the artistic talents that his mother fostered too. His true love of drawing and building objects eventually evolved into the profession he cherishes today.

FUELED BY PASSION

“In my teen years, I became obsessed with my older brother’s collection of automotive magazines, to a point that I started my own collection as well. One day, I came across an ad for a private class in Automotive Design.” The fuel was ignited. The road was paved.

THERE’S NO REST IN R&D

His first field opportunity came in his homeland of Iran at age 16, working in a factory that produced various bus, truck and train parts. “My first challenge was to design a foot rest for a coach bus passenger seat, filling up pages and pages of R&D freehand sketches daily and learning from experience.” This was when he was still in high school, mind you.

PRIDE ON WHEELS

Today, he is most proud of the Quantron fuel cell-powered 44-ton European truck QHM FCEV AERO. “One of the greatest achievements of my career!” So far - might we add. The outside shell focuses on aerodynamic optimizations while the overall design showcases sustainable material research and selected finishings.

“To me, colors and materials are most beautiful once combined to one another. I am a big fan of neutral fresh tones like cool grays mixed with energetic and strong colors such as phosphoric yellows.”

FALLING FROM THE SKY

“As a child I wanted to be Superman. He could fly, was very strong and wore a red cape. Later it became apparent that I lacked all those attributes, so I became an architect” - his words, not ours!

LONDON IN THE 80’S

Kourosh recalls London back in 1980’s: “The early 80’s were exciting times for a young student in London, where the design landscape was thriving with publications, debates, evening talks and exhibitions. One of my favorite venues was the small Triangle bookshop at the Architectural Association”

BOLD & BEAUTIFUL

There, he met Zaha Hadid, an AA tutor at the time who had just won the Peak Competition in Hong Kong. He later worked as her assistant at her newly stablished studio. “Her boldness and lack of reverence for all that was considered as “accepted norm” has always inspired me.”

He later followed a master’s degree at Kingston University with a focus on the works of the American modernist Louis Kahn. “Today, Kahn’s buildings remain a benchmark for many contemporary architects. Whilst many architects revere his buildings, but outside the profession, his work, even his name, remains little known.”

“While emerging digital technologies offer architects radically new possibilities for designing and building, architecture remains largely the result of unique and personalized innovation.”

As a bass player, Laura gravitates towards funk-infused vibes from artists like Jamiroquai and the heavy beats of Korn. Whether it's the raw energy of rock or the soulful rhythms of funk, Laura finds joy and inspiration in music.

TEA TIME

Her fantasy brainstorming session would bring together around a cup of tea, three iconic figures—Zaha Hadid, Salvador Dali, and Albert Einstein—with the ambitious goal of envisioning the perfect eco-system city. Marta would invite Paulo Freire, Lina Bo Bardi, and Renzo Piano to a creative brainstorm to envision a future where architecture becomes a catalyst for change. Together, they would explore innovative solutions that blend transformative education, cultural roots, and aesthetic harmony. Their dialogue would inspire dreams of inclusive and sustainable architecture, shaping a brighter tomorrow for communities worldwide.

CAOS Y MAGIA

Despite her global endeavors, Lima remains Marta's chosen base—a city she both loves and hates. In the midst of chaos, Lima offers a vibrant cultural tapestry and a sense of belonging. Its people, though facing social injustices, exude support and resilience. Lima, with its paradoxes and complexities, holds a special place in Marta's heart—a city of magic amidst the madness.

Matthew YOUNG

“I have said empathy is the heart of great design - but in these troubled times I may wish to expand that to say empathy is at the heart of all great decision making.”

DESIGN IS EMPATHY

Matthew is a prominent Australian architect making waves in Vietnam, serving as a founding member of studio3eight. With a diverse portfolio spanning various scales and sectors—from storefronts to expansive provincial masterplans, and from residential to hospitality and educational projects—His holistic approach to design fosters innovative solutions rooted in empathy for end users.

LUSCIOUS GREEN

As an architect, Matthew has a curious relationship with colour, early in his career he was less confident to be bold though experience has drawn out a more intuitive chromatic response. Growing up in a hot, dry climate, the lushness of green symbolized life and comfort, later this developed, inspiring his affinity for earthy tones that evoke a sense of natural harmony and balance. This deep connection to natural materials and tones permeates his designs, infusing spaces with a timeless allure and inviting tranquility.

Founder and Director studio3eight

Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam studio3eight.com

INNOVATING TOGETHER

His first project – the award winning HUB205, served as a catalyst for Matthew's career, propelling him into the spotlight and earning accolades for his innovative approach to multi-residential housing. However, beyond individual achievements, he finds fulfillment in nurturing a team of architects whose multidisciplinary talents contribute to the collective vision of creating a better-built environment for all.

LOOKING AHEAD

Matthew envisions a profession grounded in empathy and sustainability, where architects embrace their role as stewards of the planet and champions of social equity. With advancements in technology and a deeper understanding of our interconnectedness with the natural world, he foresees a future where design intuitively harmonizes with the environment, yielding outcomes that are not only functionally and socially responsive, aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible.

Milagros ZINGONI PHIELIPP

INSIDE/OUT

Milagros is an Associate Professor and the Director to the School of Interior Architecture, and the Director of Diversity Relations for the College of Architecture and Design, at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). Prior to joining UTK, she was an Associate Professor with tenure at Arizona State University, where she taught the first nine years in architecture and urban design, and the last seven years in interior design and interior architecture. She was instrumental in creating the master's in interior architecture.

TEACHING DESIGN CITIZENSHIP

Her pedagogical approaches focus on enabling design students to develop soft and hard skills, emphasizing empathy, collaboration, and global citizenship, while expanding design-build studios into interior architecture and cross-disciplinary design-thinking. She believes that design should serve the public good and uses as a tool to develop agency in underserved communities.

ARGENTINA ON MY MIND

Born and raised in Argentina, the registered architect, also studied Habitat Design and Urban and Environmental Planning extensively. Her experience both as a designer, planner and educator has enabled her to move fluently across different scales, from city scale to body scale.

MOTHERHOOD ON HER MIND

“I was a very curious kid growing up. I wanted to wear many hats in life… A prosecutor, a veterinarian, an inventor… an architect. Becoming a mother one day was the one and only certainty I fostered. I find a lot of common themes between architecture, education, and motherhood, and they influence each other.”

FROM THE GROUND UP

When Milagros turned ten, her family moved to Patagonia in Argentina. Her father worked in a hydroelectric dam and her family settled amidst a community that was still being built at the time. “Every day, we would see prefabricated homes flying on cranes over our heads. In a matter of a few weeks, I witnessed a community being built from the ground up and a river detouring its natural course. I think my lived experiences influence my interests in the built environment at all scales.”

ARCHITECT. ALWAYS.

Gensler Design Director Nadja Borras Markovic, an avid researcher in creative processes and Design Thinking, has shared her insights on leveraging neuroscience in design at international forums like NeoCon in Chicago. Let's delve into her brilliant mind.

A MIND SET

When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, Nadja's response was unequivocal: Architect. Always. Despite having no architects in her family or her entourage, she was resolute in her path.

RUNNING THROUGH HER VEINS

“Architecture and design are my passion and part of my DNA. I see it as a way of life, transforming spaces into a better world for their users. It's about stimulating experiences and sensations, enhancing how people live in spaces.”

FOOTPRINTS

“I constantly consider how architects leave footprints on Earth,” Nadja says, emphasizing sustainability in her designs. “I'm passionate about salvaging old and unused structures, breathing new life into them.” Her favorite color? “Black, also known as the absence of color,” she adds.

OLD & NEW

One of her latest projects involved transforming an abandoned building in Isla Mujeres, Mexico, into a stunning hotel, all the while, engaging islanders and preserving the wildlife.

“For my fantasy date, I'd invite an architect, a musician, and an astronomical physicist to discuss how to wisely and harmoniously translate the universe's systems into human habitats.”

PAINTING A STORY

An enthusiast of impressionism, modernism, and art nouveau, Nataly has always found her inspiration in art. “It was my husband Anton who, many years back, opened my mind to the field of design.”

FROM LAND TO SEA

“My first independent project was an apartment for a young couple in Kyiv, located in a brand new building.” The two-bedroom ice-breaking apartment contract felt most meaningful to Nataly Bolshakova. A few years later, a largescale house project set on the Kyiv Sea would be Nataly’s first award-winning project. Next milestone to hit? Making it into the AD100!

ONE WORLD

She lives in Geneva with her family and finds Paris and London most inspiring. “I also enjoy returning to Cyprus. It hosts a very distinctive vibe, one that embraces people. It welcomed me with open arms.”

CLASSIC RITZ

When traveling, Nataly chooses one destination worldwide… “I chose the Ritz… both for its splendid suites and its irresistible restaurants.”

Nicolas LEBRUN

Designer Industriel Creaform Inc

Québec, Québec, Canada creaform3d.com

DESIGN IN EVOLUTION

Industrial designer for over 25 years, Nicolas was awarded a GRAND PRIX for his PEEL 3 project at the 17th edition of the international GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN competition. He also won several Red Dot Design Awards, including a Best Of The Best for the C-Track project in 2017.

THE BIG REVEAL

Nicolas, a seasoned industrial designer hailing from Québec, began his career with early experiences as a draftsman in the furniture industry, laying the basis for his transition into industrial design. A pivotal moment occurred at Mega Bloks in 1995, where Nicolas found himself immersed in a world of creativity and innovation, shaping his perspective on the possibilities within the field.

FAST TRACK TO SUCCESS

His greatest achievement, the C-Track product developed at Creaform, exemplifies design excellence, earning him prestigious accolades such as the Red Dot Design Award. For Nicolas, the essence of motivation lies in the ability to spearhead transformative projects, shrouded in secrecy until their grand reveal.

UNAVOIDABLE AI

As he reflects on the evolution of his profession, Nicolas envisions a future where the boundaries between design and technology blur, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence. He anticipates a paradigm shift in the way products are conceptualized and created, with designers wielding words to bring their visions to life in three-dimensional form. “It will be up to us to adapt and use it as a tool for creation.”

CHARMING QUÉBEC CITY

As a resident of Québec City, Nicolas finds solace in the picturesque landscapes of the city and its vibrant cultural scene, with favorite spots including the waterfront, boulevard Champlain, the marina, and local restaurants like Tori-Isakaya.

Nicole CHARBONNEAU

LANDSCAPE THERAPY

By refining her expertise within several multidisciplinary teams, landscape architect Nicole Charbonneau discovered a dual passion for mentoring and teaching, as well as a love for the intricate field of green infrastructure.

A COMPLEX DYNAMIC

Nicole first majored in art and psychology before turning to landscape architecture, a field where design principles rely on understanding human interactions and reactions to their surroundings and for which the ultimate goal is to create a positive experience for users while meeting their needs and respecting the environment. “It's a complex dynamic that I absolutely love exploring.”

A FIELD SCHOOL

Her first job as a landscape architect at a greenhouse provided her with an opportunity to specialize. Exploring the world of plants and horticulture, becoming familiar with the tools and products of the trade, served as an ideal springboard. Today, she takes great pride in seeing her projects come to life, from conception to completion, such as her first elementary school project that she successfully led.

WHEN IN NEED

When in need of inspiration, Nicole immerses herself in other people’s portfolios to get her own wheels turning again. Cooks, artists, writers, anyone creative and outside of the box. When that fails to work, she goes for a nearby walk or forest hike and connects with nature.

OF ALL THE PLACES IN THE WORLD

Andalucia in Spain holds a sweet spot. “I would move there in a heartbeat! Its colors, its culture, its warmth, its people. Absolute bliss.”

“Don't wait for opportunities to come to you; instead, identify what you're passionate about and create your own opportunities.”

CREATIVITY TO SHAPE SOCIAL CHANGE

Nicole McIntosh is the Co-Founder of the Swiss American design practice: Architecture Office, its contributions to design and research have been greatly awarded and recognized.

CREATIVE ASPIRATION

As a child, McIntosh envisioned herself as a fashion designer or photographer, captivated by the artistic expression. However, her path took another turn when she chose to pursue architecture, drawn by its promise of boundless opportunities and the ability to shape the built and humane environment.

THROUGH THE PRISM

Among McIntosh's proudest achievements is the design of a fast-casual restaurant for the nonprofit All Square in Minneapolis. Committed to employing formerly incarcer-

ated individuals, All Square's mission resonated deeply with McIntosh. The restaurant's design, featuring strategically placed mirrors and frames, to challenge patrons to see the world from alternative viewpoints. This project exemplifies McIntosh's dedication to using architecture as a force for positive social change.

RUNNING IDEAS

When faced with creative ruts, McIntosh turns to the cityscape for inspiration. Early morning runs provide her with awakening of urban landscapes, offering clarity. This practice not only rejuvenates her creativity but also serves as a reminder of the dynamic interplay between architecture and the surrounding environment.

“To design for such an important mission was very challenging and rewarding at the same time.”

A DIAMOND IN THE DESERT

A project he is particularly proud of is Desert Rock in Saudi Arabia, his first major resort commission awarded in 2020. This remote desert resort, surrounded by a mountain range, was his “dream project.” He was responsible for the entire scope, including guestrooms, F&B, spa, and public spaces. Remarkably, he designed and coordinated everything remotely during the height of COVID. This beautifully understated project has led to other significant commissions with the same client, including an ocean resort with Foster and Partners and an avant-garde over-water resort with Sean Killa.

“Engaging with others and with our surroundings confidently and respectfully sets the tone for broad successful outcomes in life and work.”

Founder Mabeo Gaborone, Botswana mabeofurniture.com

CULTIVATING MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS

Botswana-born Peter Mabeo founded his own practice in 2006 with the idea of going beyond commercially influenced ideas of economic development and worldly success by applying the synergistic values of traditional craft and modernism as a basis for cultivating meaningful craft based relationships.

CRAFTSMANSHIP & CULTURE

Instigator, mediator, editor and designer in the process, Mabeo seeks to broaden design industry related activity and create objects for everyday use that spring from collaborative translations of techniques.

BE AS IT MAY

For Peter, a creative rut, or a creative burst for that matter, is what it is. “Both are to be felt and expressed with great interest.”

LIFE IS CREATIVITY

“Everyone on this earth, if serious consideration is applied, is creative. Life is creativity. An ‘industry’ by default is counterproductive to creativity. It relies on rigidity and structure, instead of freedom. For Peter, visual beauty and creative integrity do not spring from a preset proven formula.”

COMMUTING IN COMMUNION

He lives in the city of Gaborone and works in a village called Mmankgodi. Both are “off the radar,” as travel agents might say. There is a long commute from the city to the village studio. The landscape is subtle and simple. It is not entertaining. Its substance is apparent through simple, non-seeking observation. “No fantasy dream destination needed.”

SUNSHINE-LOVING IN STUTTGART

Petra Stephan, studied architecture and urban planning at the University of Stuttgart, after which architectural and editorial experiences in Stuttgart and Seville followed.

FROM DAYCARE TO MASS SUNDAY

“My first memories of architecture go back to my childhood, to a time in which I dreamt of becoming an author someday”, says the architectural major, now editor-in-chief of a major architecture publication. “I found out only recently both my kindergarten and my neighborhood church had been designed by the same architect.” Go figure!

TWO PASSIONS INTERTWINED

“I feel blessed I get to live and breathe architecture and journalism on a daily basis, as part of how I make my living.” In Petra’s knowledgeable opinion, the dying profession of art journalism is indispensable for it serves to curate based on both aspects of ethics and aesthetics.

DREAMING OUT THE FUTURE

How great it would be to reunite the great minds of 19th-century German designer Lilly Reich, first Austrian woman architect Margarete Schütte-Llhotzky and contemporary Berlin architect Ester Bruzkus to discuss ways in which women can finally be seen more for their great accomplishments in the field.

GUILTY PLEASURES

Come rain or shine, one disco dancin’ favorite always gets Petra going… “Celebration” by Kool and the Gang. Pair that happy tune with an irresistible glass of sparkling champagne and you’ve got Petra’s perfect guilty pleasure.

CHERRY ON TOP

During the summer of 2002, his first experience at the Jazz Festival in Montréal, he bought an ice cream near Place Des Arts. The bustling crowds and lack of “Urban Pause” spaces along Ste-Catherine prevented him from finding a spot to sit and enjoy his treat. Fast forward to 2012, during a brief stint working for Martin Marcotte Architects, he was inspired by Mies Van Der Rohe's work for the Seagram building in New York to advocate for the creation of a small urban “plaza” at the entrance of one of Griffin Town Developments on Peel Street. This vision, replicated for the Drummond project in Montréal as well, with Marco Manini Architect, aimed to provide a welcoming space for people to take a break and enjoy the city.

FULL CIRCLE

Another fast forward to 2018, invited by his students and in preparation for his presentation for the “Design A to Z” conference at Concordia University about the role of architects, Sarmad decided to revisit the plaza, and to his sheer delight, he witnessed a heartwarming scene—a senior couple sitting on a bench, indulging in an ice cream treat.

THE COLORS OF PROVENCE

There are no rules to where one’s inspiration springs from. For Stephen, the colors of Provence, most particularly, the blues in Marseilles, are most meaningful for they remind him of the three wonderful years he lived near the Vieux Port when running the ‘Grand Bleu’ project for Will Alsop.

AN ARTIST, THROUGH AND THROUGH

Stephen is drawn to the greatness of Achille Castiglioni. “The man was exceptional in his ability to create beautiful things from disparate and unusual sourcers.” And if fantasy dreams were reality, he’d meet up with English rockstar David Bowie, Irish writer Spike Milligan and ex-member of the UK Parliament Tony Benn to discuss the transformation of world politics.

THE OPTIMISM OF ARCHITECTURE

Most proud of the Fal-Fah arts school project for underprivileged children in Bangkok that Pimbley was privileged to work on, the man embraces the creative opportunities and innovations the future holds. “I think AI tools are to be embraced as means to become a more effective design studio and enable additional ‘fun design time’!”

The girl loves her rhythm and blues and all that jazz. Big favorites are Herbie Hancock’s Rocket, Aretha Franklin’s Respect and Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. Pump up the volume, and find her dancing!

“I love how the creative brain considers thorny problems expansively and then arrives at poignant, focused solutions.”

SYMBIOTIC SPACES

Thanasis is an architect and landscape architect with degrees from the School of Architecture at NTUA Athens and a Master's in Landscape Architecture from UPC ETSAB. He is founder of TPOL –(Thanasis Polyzoidis Landscape Design) and co-founder of topio7 architecture and landscape design team.

PAINTING LANDSCAPES

Reflecting on childhood aspirations, Thanasis fondly recalls dreaming of becoming both a painter and an astronaut. While the latter ambition drifted away, painting remained integral to his connection with landscape design. Growing up amidst the picturesque Greek countryside, he spent countless hours capturing its essence on canvas. Now, as a landscape architect, he finds himself returning to those childhood dreams, translating them into the sprawling landscapes he designs.

E-CO-LLECTIVA

Among his proudest achievements is the “e-co-llectiva” urban design project, a ground-breaking endeavor that garnered international acclaim. This initiative, born from a national architectural competition, aimed to create vibrant public spaces within Athens' dense urban fabric. Its success marked a turning point in Thanasis' career along with a great series of successive competitions with topio7 team.

For him, the allure of landscape architecture lies in its ability to bridge the gap between the natural and built environments. Creating spaces that harmonize with nature fuels his passion, driving him to explore innovative solutions. “One great motivation for me is the creation of spaces that promote the symbiotic relationship and osmosis between the human-made environment and the natural world.”

LEADING ROLE

As the world grapples with sustainability and climate change, Thanasis sees landscape architects playing a pivotal role in shaping resilient and adaptive environments. By integrating sustainable practices and embracing interdisciplinary collaboration, they can create spaces that thrive amidst environmental challenges.

“It is our duty to contribute to the creation of ecosustainability, particularly within urban environments.”

Tima BELL

Los Angeles, California, United States studioofrelativity.com

IT’S ALL RELATIVE

Born in the Big Apple and raised both in Venice Beach, California, and Peaks Island, Maine, Tima Bell has lived coast to coast, studied extensively abroad in Europe and has even spent a one-year artist-in-residency in Israel.

FROM ART TO ARCHITECTURE

Tima’s passion for art led him to architecture as a launching point to explore the 3D space within his own paintings. As founding Principal of Bell Design Group, he continues to explore the physicality of art and architecture through his work within the firm. From straw-bale construction to high-end boutique hospitality projects, from motion picture studio design to master plan conception, Tima is vigilant in achieving balance between quality, style and programmatic efficiency.

THE DREAM TEAM

“I was a big boy growing up… so obviously I dreamt of playing in the NBA!” As the Beach Boys’ famous lyrics go, Bell was California Dreamin’ big! (though he did play professional basketball in China).

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

Tima was also adjunct professor at Woodbury University and acts as a guest juror at several universities nationally. He leads by example, recognized for his contributions to the field and rewarded with the Individual Boutique 18 Design Award, Boutique 18 Design Restaurant Award and an Interior Design Magazine finalist in the last 3 years.

THE CLASSIC SUPERHERO

“I used to imagine having some sort of superhero accident, like Dr. Strange or Spiderman. How nice it would be to hold a superpower and host a superhuman mission!”

“My attraction to various colors varies with time, seasons, and moods. Textured neutrals and rich earth tones speak mountains to me these days.”

Tushar NEGI

Co-Founder & Executive Director SOSA Canada Toronto, Ontario, Canada sosacanada.ca

CHILDHOOD DREAM AND INSPIRATION

Growing up, Tushar always wanted to become an automobile designer. Yet, it was under the guidance of his maternal uncle, Anil Rawat, a distinguished architect in his own right, that truly ignited the flame of creativity within him. Under his mentorship, Tushar's fascination with design flourished, gradually paving the way for his journey towards becoming the architect he has become today.

BUILDING BRIDGES

Tushar’s professional journey began in 2012 in New Delhi, India. In his first-ever project, he was involved in the design of an institutional building tailored to the unique needs of the differently-abled. This project not only marked a milestone in Tushar's journey but also underscored his commitment to creating spaces that resonate with purpose and inclusivity.

SOSA CANADA

However, it is his co-founding of SOSA Canada (Society of South Asian Architects, Canada) that stands as his proudest achievement to date. An organization rooted in personal experiences as immigrants, SOSA Canada aims to serve as a comprehensive platform with the purpose of creating opportunities for networking, mentoring, and advocacy for the South Asian architecture and design community in Canada. With over 1500 members, SOSA Canada has blossomed into a thriving community, reflecting Tushar's commitment to fostering connections and making a positive impact.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

Toronto, with its cultural diversity and inclusive atmosphere, is Tushar's chosen home and workplace. He finds comfort in its welcoming embrace and truly feels he belongs here. Tushar also takes delight in exploring its culinary scene, particularly indulging in the flavors of Paracas Peruvian Restaurant on St. Clair Avenue W.
