Setting Business Goals

We all go into a New Year with personal goals in mind. Some of us want to be healthier - going to the gym and/or losing weight. Maybe you want to travel more or spend more time with loved ones. As business owners, we should be setting goals for our business each year as well. What do you want to achieve in 2025?

goal. Or, maybe it’s time you increase prices to make up for any increased costs you’ve incurred. To increase revenue for the entire year by 10% in this example, you’d only need to make about $900 more each week. Are there new products you can offer or start promoting to your current clients? Can you upgrade clients to higher end services?

The first step is figuring out what your biggest goal is for the year. Do you want to increase revenue? Profitability? Total client number? Obviously these are all great steps in the right direction, but you should be specific and set one major goal that can be broken down into smaller and more achievable steps.

So many business owners in our industry still work behind a chair, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. For many, that may be how you decided to go into business for yourself in the first place. But while you may spend most of your day working in your business, make sure to set

the morning to update our companies performance numbers than doing an entire week or month at a time. When we are consistently tracking everything, it’s easy to pinpoint which areas need improvement. Are you selling the people that are coming in the door, but still not making enough sales? You probably could work to improve lead generation and marketing. Are you getting a bunch of people calling your business but not making enough sales? It’s possible that a sales course or sales coach could help improve revenue.

SMART is a helpful acronym for goals that are:

Let’s say for example your #1 goal for the New Year is increasing your total annual revenue by 10%. I like to break everything down into monthly and weekly numbers to know exactly how I’m pacing towards my goals. In this example, last year my company made $500,000 in revenue. To increase by 10%, our goal for 2025 would be to make $550,000. In order to reach our goal we would need to make $45,833 per month or $10,576 per week. Now that these numbers are smaller and easier to plan for, you can start setting small milestones to reach your goal. Maybe you need to make two more sales each month to reach your revenue

aside a little bit of time each day or each week to work on your business as well. A few minutes in the morning dedicated to reviewing company performance can be the difference between reaching your goals and missing the mark.

Every single morning, I track the revenue, profits, sales, and marketing performance of our company from the day before. It’s much easier to take five minutes out of

We set goals as a roadmap. It’s always easier to reach your destination when you know where you’re going and how to get there. Set the destination (your big goal) first, and then map out the road for the rest of the year. Set little goals and checkpoints along the way to make sure you’re on the right path. How much revenue do we need to make each quarter? How many sales do we need to make each month to reach our goal?

No matter how big or small your company is, there is always a next step you can take towards growth. Your yearly goal may be small, but there should always be something to work towards and to aim for. If you aren’t focused on improving and growing, it’s very easy to stay stuck in the same place year after year. This year, let’s try putting more of our focus on our goals and working daily/weekly/monthly on tracking our progress and see what we can accomplish. As Tony Robbins said, “Where focus goes, energy flows. And where energy flows, whatever you’re focusing on grows”.

The Gut-Hair Health Connection

Solutions

The correlation between gut health and hair health is a fascinating topic that delves into the complex workings of our body. Recent research sheds light on the profound connection between the gut and various aspects of our well-being, including our hair. The gut-hair axis refers to the intricate interplay between the gut microbiome, immune system, and hair follicles. A healthy gut microbiome ensures efficient digestion and absorption of essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids pertinent to hair health. The connection is enhanced by the existence of a “second brain” in our gut, known as the enteric nervous system (ENS). The ENS is made up of a complex network of neurons located within the walls of the gastrointestinal tract, extending from the esophagus to the rectum. The ENS is often referred to as our second brain due to its ability to independently control various digestive functions and communicate with the central nervous system (CNS), which comprises of the brain and spinal cord. This occurs via the vagus nerve, a major pathway connecting the gut and the brain, allowing for bidirectional communication between the two.

is the balance of this gut microbiota. An unbalanced gut microbiota is characterized by an overgrowth of harmful bacteria and a lack of beneficial bacteria, influencing inflammation throughout the body, including the scalp. The gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in nutrient absorption, which is crucial for the growth and maintenance of healthy hair. An imbalance of gut microbiota can negatively impact various body functions, particularly scalp health, impairing nutrient absorption, leading to deficiencies that may manifest as hair thinning, brittleness, or slow hair growth.

Promoting a healthy gut through measures like stress management and psychological well-being can have a positive impact on mental health and hair health. Studies have shown that imbalances in the gut microbiota may contribute to mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression, which are often associated with hair-related problems such as excessive shedding or hair shaft weakening.

of essential nutrients, such as vitamins and amino acids. These nutrients are then absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to the hair follicles, promoting proper hair growth and strength. When the balance of the gut is disrupted, harmful bacteria can release toxins and by-products that enter the bloodstream and trigger an inflammatory response. This chronic inflammation can negatively affect hair follicles, leading to conditions such as alopecia. Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome through a balanced diet, prebiotic and probiotic supplementation, or fermented foods may help reduce inflammation and support optimal hair health.

Prebiotics help restore beneficial bacteria to the gut, enhancing nutrient absorption and optimizing immune functions, acting as food for these beneficial bacteria, promoting their growth and diversity. The essential vitamins and minerals should support hair growth and strength, reinforcing the health benefits to the hair, ensuring that nutrients are efficiently absorbed, promoting strong and vibrant hair growth. A balanced gut microbiome also helps reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, creating an environment conducive to healthy hair follicles.

The gut is home to trillions of bacteria that form a diverse and dynamic microbial community. These gut bacteria play a crucial role in maintaining the health of our digestive system and supporting our overall well-being. One important aspect of gut health that influences hair health

The gut-brain connection is also impacted by stress on the gut and hair health. Stress can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, compromising gut health. This disruption can trigger a cascade of events, including inflammation, increased cortisol levels, and changes in hormone production, all of which directly affect scalp health. Stress-induced hair loss or thinning is a common occurrence and management of stress is essential to healthy hair maintenance.

Beneficial bacteria in the gut help break down food and aid in the production

The balance of the gut microbiota, inflammation levels, stress management, and the gut-brain connection each influence the vitality and appearance of our hair. Recognizing the importance of maintaining a healthy gut through proper nutrition, stress reduction, and a diet that promotes a diverse microbiota not only supports better digestive health, but also contributes toward luscious, vibrant hair. The connection between the gut and our hair and scalp health emphasizes the importance of holistic wellness.

Confidence is the Key to Success in the Salon Industry

In this ever-evolving industry, confidence is more than just a feeling—it’s the driving force behind success. Whether you’re a manufacturer, salon owner, employee, hairdresser, or client, confidence shapes the entire experience. I’ve seen firsthand how confidence transforms not only the customer experience but also the success of everyone involved.

The hair industry, especially in extensions and hair enhancements, is constantly evolving. As Director of Products and Programs, I’ve worked on innovative solutions for brands like easihair pro, Amplify, Habit, Vomor, Ulta and others. My focus has always been twofold: Developing highquality, high-performing product solutions and providing the necessary programs to support salon professionals and their clients alike.

The Ripple Effect of Confidence

Confidence has a ripple effect. When a client leaves the salon feeling amazing, it’s not just the result of the appointment, it’s the culmination of many confident actions. Confidence must exist at every stage, from the quality of products to the stylist’s knowledge. But can you say with certainty that confidence is present throughout your business?

It’s not just about trusting your team or the end result. Confidence is needed in your products, processes, and most importantly, your people. A lack of confidence, whether it’s a front desk assistant unsure about bookings or a stylist uncomfortable with a new service, can impact the customer experience.

Building Confidence in the Salon Team

I often hear from salon owners: “My team doesn’t sell,” “They won’t do consultations,” or “They’re not booking high-profit services

like extensions or hair replacement.” My response? “I’m not surprised.” Why would they if they’re not confident? And why would you want them to?

Think back to a time when you felt embarrassed or unsure and were pushed into action. Compare that to when you were encouraged and succeeded. The difference? Confidence and experience.

Confidence isn’t something you can demand, it has to be built. It comes from training, experience, and support. If you introduce a new product or service that requires new skills, it’s your job as the leader to help build your team’s confidence. They need more than product knowledge, they need to understand how it impacts their work and the client’s experience.

According to the International Salon Business Institute, salons offering hair extensions see up to 58% higher profit margins. Yet, only 40% of stylists feel confident offering these services without proper training.

The Role of Education in Confidence Building

Education is where confidence is built. When introducing a new product or service, it’s not enough for your team to know the details. They need to understand how it works, how to overcome challenges, and how to incorporate it into the salon experience.

A common mistake is cramming too much information into a single-day training session, expecting stylists to be ready the next day. Studies show that people retain only 25% of the information delivered in a single-day intensive training, but retention increases to 65% when learning is spread out.

That’s why I’ve redesigned how I approach education. Our programs now include digital learning pre- and posthands-on practice, and self-paced learning resources. This ongoing support helps stylists feel confident sooner.

Confidence is Contagious

When confidence is ingrained in a salon’s operations, it spreads. Confident stylists deliver a better client experience, and confident clients are more likely to return. When confidence is lacking, it’s palpable. A stylist unsure of their technique or product will second-guess themselves, and the client will feel that uncertainty.

A survey by Salon Today found that 85% of customers can sense when a stylist lacks confidence, and 65% said it negatively impacts their decision to return.

Designing Your Business Around Confidence

So, how do you build a salon that exudes confidence? It starts by asking critical questions: Are you confident in your products, your education, and your processes? If confidence is lacking in any area, that’s where you need to focus.

Take a proactive approach by identifying gaps and filling them. Whether it’s investing in better products, improving training, or streamlining operations, the goal is to create an environment where everyone feels secure in their role.

Action Steps for Building Confidence in Your Team

It starts behind the scenes with manufacturers and salon owners and carries through to stylists and clients. Confidence can’t be expected—it must be built through consistent communication, programs, and support.

I’ve seen the power of confidence firsthand. When it’s present, it drives success at every level. Make confidence your number one goal — your team, your business, and your clients will thank you.

Action Steps for Building Confidence in Your Team

1. Confidence is Essential at Every Level

• Action: Evaluate every stage of your salon’s operations to ensure confidence is present—from product sourcing to service delivery. Check in with your team regularly to gauge their confidence in handling services and products.

2. Confidence is Built, Not Innate

• Action: Create an environment where confidence is developed through structured training, practice, and mentorship. Break learning into phases and provide lowpressure opportunities for skill development.

• Mentorship and Peer Support: Pair newer team members with experienced stylists or educators who can guide them through new processes and techniques in real-time.

3. Education is Key—Comprehensive, Hands-on Learning

• Action: Invest in continuous education beyond a single workshop. Use hands-on learning to ensure your team is fully prepared before offering new services.

• Digital Learning Tools: Use digital learning platforms that allow stylists to learn at their own pace, serving as resources they can refer to after training sessions.

4. Confidence Drives Client Retention

• Action: Train stylists to confidently lead consultations and follow up with clients after their visit. Confidence in consultations builds trust and encourages longterm loyalty.

• Client Feedback: Implement a system to gather feedback after services. Use this feedback to improve and celebrate your stylists’ successes, reinforcing their confidence.

5. Confidence Should Be Prioritized—Creating a Culture of Empowerment

• Action: Build a salon culture that empowers decision-making, rewards confidence, and fosters a growth mindset. Recognize confident behavior and celebrate team wins.

• Reward Confidence: Celebrate team members who demonstrate confidence through formal recognition programs (e.g., “Stylist of the Month”) and informal praise during meetings.

My Journey to Healing Transforming Hair Loss Into Empowerment

My journey in the beauty industry has been a long and deeply personal one. For over 20 years, I've had the privilege of helping people feel more confident through their hair, watching firsthand the impact it has on self-esteem and well-being. My path took a surprising turn during the COVID-19 pandemic when I faced my own battle with alopecia, a hair loss condition that changed my life and the course of my career.

filled that gap, but helping clients dealing with hair loss brought together my passion for caring for others and my technical skills in a way I hadn’t anticipated.

I now offer non-surgical hair restoration services, but it’s not just about fixing hair; it’s about helping people reclaim their confidence and sense of self. There’s something truly special about watching a client leave with a renewed spirit and a lifted heart. It’s their entire being that transforms, not just their hair.

each individual, creating a safe space where they feel supported as we find a solution together.

People have always trusted me to make them feel good about themselves, but with hair loss, that trust feels even more sacred. I approach every appointment with care and empathy, taking my responsibility seriously.

Over time, I’ve built a team of specialists who share my passion for helping others through hair loss. Many of my team members have experienced hair loss themselves, so they understand the journey our clients are on. I also created an apprenticeship program to teach nonsurgical hair replacement, helping women develop professionally while offering them emotional growth and support.

My message to anyone experiencing hair loss is this: don’t suffer in silence. Reach out to someone who understands. Whether it’s finding a non-surgical solution or simply talking to someone who will listen, you don’t have to go through this alone. Healing is possible, and it often comes through helping others.

“Hair loss is such a sensitive and personal issue,” I often tell people. My family has been in the beauty industry since 1929, and while I've been a stylist for decades, experiencing alopecia myself gave me a new understanding of the emotional toll it takes on people. That experience became a turning point for me—styling hair was no longer enough. I felt called to help people feel whole again, both inside and out.

My journey with alopecia led me to explore non-surgical hair restoration, something I hadn’t imagined I’d pursue before. But I felt a responsibility—to myself and to others—to find solutions for this challenging condition. I threw myself into training, taking every course I could on hair replacement, from scalp micropigmentation to mesh integration, bonding, extensions, and closures. I wanted to ensure I could offer real solutions to those experiencing hair loss, just as I had.

I originally started my career in nursing but was unable to finish my credentials while my mom was fighting for her life in hospice care. Becoming a hairstylist

Empathy and understanding are at the heart of my approach. Many of my clients come to me feeling vulnerable, having dealt with hair loss from conditions like alopecia, trichotillomania, or medical treatments such as chemotherapy. I work closely with

Through Salon Adair, I’ve found my purpose—creating a space where people can find comfort, connection, and confidence again. With unwavering dedication, my team and I continue to uplift our clients, one strand at a time.

Joining the American Hair Loss Council was a pivotal step that connected me with a supportive community and invaluable resources. I realized that hair restoration had become more than a career — it was my calling.

Unlocking Scalp Health and Hair Growth with Derma-Rollers

This simple device has gained popularity for its potential to improve scalp health and promote hair growth. In this blog post, we will explore what dermarollers do, their benefits, who can benefit from them, and how to use them effectively at home.

Reduction of Scalp Issues: Regular use of a derma-roller can help address common scalp problems like dandruff and dryness by improving overall scalp health and promoting a balanced oil production.

Who Should Use A Derma-Roller?

What Are Derma-Rollers?

Derma-rollers are handheld devices equipped with tiny, fine needles that create micro-punctures in the scalp's skin. This process, known as microneedling, is designed to stimulate the skin's natural healing response, promoting increased blood circulation and the production of collagen and other growth factors.

The Benefits

Enhanced Hair Growth: Microneedling stimulates the release of growth factors that can lead to improved hair follicle health and increased hair growth. It can also enhance the absorption of topical hair treatments, making them more effective.

Improved Scalp Health: By boosting blood circulation, derma-rollers help nourish hair follicles with essential nutrients and oxygen, leading to a healthier scalp environment.

Derma-rollers can be beneficial for a wide range of individuals experiencing hair and scalp issues.

Men and Women with Hair Thinning: Those experiencing early signs of hair thinning can benefit from the stimulation of hair growth and improved follicle health.

Individuals with Alopecia: People with certain types of alopecia may find that microneedling helps reactivate dormant hair follicles and promotes hair regrowth.

Anyone Looking to Improve Scalp Health: Even if you're not experiencing hair loss, dermarollers can enhance overall scalp health, making your hair stronger and more resilient.

How To Use

needles provide deeper stimulation but should be used with caution.

2. Sanitize: Before and after each use, disinfect your derma-roller with rubbing alcohol to prevent infections.

3. Prepare: Cleanse your scalp thoroughly to remove any dirt, oil, or hair products. This ensures the needles can penetrate the skin effectively.

4. Press: Divide your scalp into sections and gently STAMP (don’t roll on the scalp) the derma-roller over each section. Stamp or tap in different directions (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal) to ensure even coverage. Avoid applying excessive pressure to prevent injury.

5. Apply: After microneedling, apply any topical treatments or serums designed to elevate growth factor delivery, such as growth factor serums or exosome topicals. The micro-channels created by the derma-roller enhance the absorption of these products.

Increased Collagen Production: The micro-punctures created by the dermaroller promote collagen production, which strengthens the scalp and hair follicles, reducing hair breakage and thinning.

Using a derma-roller at home is straightforward, but it's important to follow these steps for optimal results and safety:

1. Choose: Select a derma-roller with needle lengths between 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm for scalp use. Shorter needles are suitable for beginners, while longer

6. Maintain: For best results, use the derma-roller once a week or as advised by your healthcare provider. Consistency is key to seeing improvements in scalp health and hair growth.

Derma-rollers are a powerful tool in the fight against hair loss and for promoting scalp health. By incorporating this simple yet effective device into your hair care routine, you can stimulate hair growth, improve scalp condition, and enhance the effectiveness of topical treatments.

*Note this does not stop the progression of hair loss but is a booster to use along with your preventative methods.

Debunking Myths: Understanding Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania, often misunderstood, is a complex mental health condition characterized by the compulsive urge to pull out one’s hair. Despite its growing recognition, many myths surround this disorder, perpetuating stigma and misinformation. These misconceptions can hinder understanding and support for those affected. In this article, we’ll explore five prevalent myths about trichotillomania, debunking each one to provide a clearer picture of the condition. By shedding light on the realities of trichotillomania, we, as hair loss practitioners, can foster greater empathy and awareness, ultimately encouraging better support for individuals navigating trichotillomania

and stylists. Labeling trichotillomania as a bad habit can perpetuate shame and isolation, as it overlooks underlying psychological complexities and discourages individuals from seeking the support they need.

Myth: Hair pulling is a type of self-harm.

Trichotillomania and self-harm are classified as distinct from one another in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). While both behaviors involve physical alterations to the body, trichotillomania is primarily a compulsive disorder rather than an act of self-harm intended to inflict pain or punishment. Although trichotillomania results in hair loss, that is an unintended result of the behavior. On the other hand, self-harm has an intentionality attached to it.

Myth: People who pull out their hair can "just stop."

One of the most prevalent myths about trichotillomania is the belief that individuals can simply "stop" pulling out their hair if they want to. This misconception undermines the complexity of the disorder. Trichotillomania is classified as a mental health disorder, and the urge to pull hair can at times be a coping mechanism for stress, anxiety, or boredom. For many, this behavior is not a matter of willpower but an impulsive action that feels almost uncontrollable; imagine being told to not scratch when you have an itch.

Understanding that trichotillomania is not just a “bad habit” but a serious condition is crucial for hair loss practitioners

In fact, for many with trichotillomania, the act of pulling out one’s hair is considered to be self-soothing. Understanding this distinction is crucial for fostering empathy and providing appropriate support to clients with trichotillomania.

Myth: Hair regrowth is guaranteed.

A common myth surrounding trichotillomania is the belief that hair will always grow back, regardless of the extent of pulling. While it's true that many individuals experience regrowth after episodes of hair loss, repeated and severe pulling can lead to permanent damage to hair follicles, resulting in lasting bald patches or thinning.

Even when hair does regrow after

episodes of pulling, it may emerge with a different texture, curl pattern, or even gray, reflecting changes in the hair follicles and overall health. A scalp analysis can reveal the health of hair follicles by determining whether they are active or dormant, providing insights into potential regrowth and treatment options.

Myth: Only women have trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania can and does affect individuals of all genders. Research indicates that boys and girls experience trichotillomania equally in childhood. However, by adulthood, 80-90% of reported cases are women. There are some questions as to whether the adulthood statistics are as skewed as represented. Some research has shown that more adult men have trichotillomania than may be reported. Those men affected by trichotillomania might choose to conceal their disorder by shaving their problem areas (ex. beard or head).

Myth: Trichotillomania is rare.

Research suggests that trichotillomania affects approximately 1-2% of the population, making it more common than many people realize. By recognizing that trichotillomania is not uncommon, professionals can create a more informed and compassionate environment, encouraging open conversations and providing better resources for clients who may feel isolated in their experiences.

Ultimately, a greater awareness of trichotillomania will enable our community to offer better care and create a supportive community for those navigating life with trichotillomania.

Extend the Life of a Topper

We have all been in a situation where a box of hair extensions can save the day! A well-loved topper that is ready to be retired can be refreshed by adding some density with tape-in extensions. You can also just add extensions to give your client a temporary fun look. This is a great way to buy time while you wait for a new one or simply give your client more time with their topper.

One of the reasons I love being able to utilize hair extensions is that you can have panels overnighted to you if necessary. A few other ways to consider using extension panels that can help you in a pinch are:

• When a new hair system has come in and the density is too low, you can use the panels to give the appearance of more density.

• When a hair system in your studio has been cut too short, hair extensions can fill in that gap and buy some time while you were waiting for a new one to arrive. The panels could also satisfy your client and you may not need to order a new system. The panels are way less expensive than buying a new hair system.

• If a hair system arrives in your studio and the length is shorter than expected (or your client expected), a perimeter install will give you instant length. This also is showing your client that you’re doing everything you can to satisfy their needs.

• Having a trusted extension company with a variety of options is something that can benefit every hair replacement studio. I think of extensions as part of my emergency kit!

Before: Application:

Our client has had her topper for a few years and was looking to add a little length, density and a pop of fashion color. Her bio hair exceeded the length of the topper. Because of the difference in density and length, she could only wear her hair in a ponytail. In order to wear her hair down, we added the extensions to match her bio hair length.

We ordered six panels of higher density tape-in hair extensions and four lighter density panels in a bright fashion color.

1. Make sure the topper is clean.

2. Use clarifying shampoo only on the areas where the extensions will be applied, since clarifying shampoo will make the hair feel dry.

3. Use conditioner ONLY on the mid shaft to ends. Be sure to avoid getting conditioner on the tape area. This will make sure the panels will stay in place.

4. It is best to keep the extension panels near the perimeter of the topper, as this will add the most density and this will keep the panels hidden.

5. Make sure your client is aware of where the panels are placed for styling.

Use Extensions!

Things to consider when pricing your service

• Cost of the hair extensions

• Your application time

• Prepping the topper; wash and style

• The time for your cut-in to blend the extensions

• Run seasonal specials. For example, pink for breast cancer awareness.

A note about applying extension panels to a bonded hair system:

If you use tape-in extensions to refresh a bonded system you will need to remove the extensions before you remove the bonded system from the scalp. The removal products for hair systems will weaken the bond of the extension panels. It is necessary to remove the panels, cleanse them, re-tape and reapply at every removal service. Make sure to add this to the cost of your service.

We applied them around the perimeter of the topper for length and density. When you are wanting to maximize density, place the extensions panels close together, (almost touching) this will create a halo effect. Often one row of panels is sufficient if you are using extensions that have a high density. If necessary you can add a second row of extensions on top of the first row, make sure to apply the panels in a brick lay pattern. Because the hair is not growing, you can safely place the rows close together to conceal the panels.

The Finished Look:

The extensions added length and a pop of fashion color. Now she can wear her hair up or down!

Maintenance:

Have your clients use a wet brush or wide tooth comb for detangling, this will help keep the panels attached. Since toppers do not need frequent washing, this enhancement will last quite a long time.

GO WITH THE FLOW

Plumbing

AHLC Contributes

Maintaining an effective drainage system is vital for any salon, especially for hair replacement specialists. Hair replacement procedures often involve the use of adhesives, hairpieces, and extensive cutting, all of which can quickly lead to clogs and other drain issues. A clogged drain not only disrupts daily operations but also poses sanitation risks and can lead to costly repairs. With the right maintenance and care, you can ensure efficient plumbing with little to no interruptions to operations.

Understand What Goes Down the Drain

As a hair replacement specialist, your salon deals with materials like hair, adhesives, scalp oils, and various cleaning solutions that can accumulate in your pipes. While it’s easy to overlook what’s being washed down the drain during cleanups, all of these substances contribute to clogs and backups.

• Hair fibers and adhesives: Even small strands of hair can tangle and trap other debris, forming clogs. Adhesive materials can harden in the pipes, worsening the problem.

• Shampoos, oils, and conditioners: Oils and conditioners can congeal in the pipes, reducing water flow over time.

• Cleaning chemicals: Harsh chemicals might seem like they’d break down clogs, but they can sometimes corrode pipes, leading to long-term damage.

Install Hair Traps or Drain Screens

One of the simplest and most effective preventive measures is installing hair traps or screens on all your salon’s drains. These devices catch hair, adhesives, and other debris before they enter the plumbing system, making it easy to discard them properly.

• Regular cleaning: Make it a routine to clean hair traps at the end of every workday. This will ensure that hair and other particles don’t build up and block the drain over time.

• High-quality screens: Invest in salonspecific hair traps that are designed

to handle finer particles and smaller hairs common with hair replacement procedures.

Routine Cleaning and Flushing

Regularly cleaning your drains is essential to prevent minor clogs from becoming major problems.

• Weekly flushing with hot water: Flushing drains with boiling water once a week helps dissolve and remove product buildup.

• Use of natural drain cleaners: Avoid harsh chemicals and opt for natural cleaning solutions. Baking soda and vinegar can be effective for breaking down smaller clogs without damaging pipes. Pour a mixture of baking soda followed by vinegar down the drain, let it sit for 30 minutes, and then flush with hot water.

Preventive Maintenance

While daily and weekly maintenance is critical, scheduling regular professional maintenance ensures your system stays in optimal condition.

• Annual Inspections: Have a plumber inspect your drains at least once a year. This helps identify potential problems before they escalate and gives your drains a thorough professional cleaning.

• Hydro Jetting: For salons dealing with heavy usage, hydro jetting is an effective solution. This process uses high-pressure water to clean out all build-up inside pipes, ensuring that even stubborn materials like adhesives are washed away.

• Water Heater Maintenance: Hot water usage is significant in a salon setting. Make sure to maintain your water heater by flushing it regularly to remove sediment and ensure it operates efficiently.

Use Specialized Products

Some products are specifically designed to break down organic materials, like hair and oils, without harming the pipes. Consider using enzyme-based drain cleaners and salon-grade water softeners. These cleaners use natural bacteria to

break down hair, oils, and mineral buildup, preventing blockages without the need for harsh chemicals.

Recognize Signs of Drain Trouble

Knowing when to act fast can save you from costly repairs and downtime.

• Slow drainage: If water is taking longer than usual to drain, this could indicate a partial clog that will only worsen over time.

• Gurgling sounds: These noises may indicate air trapped in the pipes due to an obstruction.

• Foul odors: A persistent bad smell could mean that debris is decomposing inside the pipes.

• Water backups: If water backs up out of the drain, this is a clear sign of a blockage and requires immediate attention.

Additional Considerations

While regular cleanings and proper disposal practices go a long way, the following considerations could be the make or break for optimal drain function.

• Backflow Prevention: Install a backflow prevention device to protect your water supply from contamination by dirty water from shampoo bowls or other salon stations.

• Water Pressure: Consider installing a pressure gauge to monitor water pressure. Too high a pressure can damage your pipes, while too low may hinder your operations.

Educate Your Staff

Proper drain maintenance doesn’t just fall on the shoulders of the owner. It’s important to train your staff on best practices for drain care.

• Safe disposal practices: Ensure your team knows not to wash adhesive products or large clumps of hair down the sink. Provide designated disposal areas for these materials in accordance with local regulations.

• Daily drain checks: Encourage staff to regularly check drains for slow drainage or any unusual odors.

Cyberhair

Baby Hairs or Breakage?

In a time where hair extensions are almost as common as hair color, traction alopecia is rarely ever part of the education or consultation conversation. So let's shed some light on the topic.

Traction alopecia is the result of tracks or rows of hair being sewn or applied too tightly to the biological hair. It can also occur when the weight of the hair being added cannot be supported by the biological hair and causes the hair the be pulled out of the follicle. Finally, the last factor is the daily routine of the actual person wearing the added hair.

I was recently at a salon conducting a certification class for hair extensions and one of the stylists asked a great question, “How do I manage all of my clients baby hairs?” The technical response was easy, “You can clip them up or use Velcro pads and even a little hairspray to keep the baby hairs from getting in the way or tangling up your thread.” The more important response was, “Why does your guest have so many “baby hairs?” These socalled “baby hairs” can actually be the biological hair growing back after being pulled out in a high-tension application. At first glance, we might think that this guest is growing new hair and be elated. But if these baby hairs are only located along the track line, and not all over the head, this should actually be very concerning. The fact is, you can only do this so many times before the follicle scars over and stops producing baby hairs all together.

When adding wefts of hair that are sewn in, the biological hair is pulled into braids or beads to create a base. The hair extension wefts are then sewn to this base or track. Tight braids or small sections of hair are pulled in to beads and then tightened and secured by closing the bead. This feels like it would be a secure application. It might even look “clean” and esthetically pleasing, but the fact is that starting the base of the application with a tight, high-tension method will only result in even higher tension when the hair extension wefts are added. As each stitch is created, joining the biological hair in the tight braids or beads to the new added extensions, additional tension is added to that already tightly secured section of hair. This excessive tension feels like itching and irritation at the track line. Over the next 24-48 hours, the hair follicle can no longer hang on to the hair and it is rejected, more so ejected out of the follicle, bulb and all.

As if that doesn’t give you goose bumps, lets add the weight of thick, long, and heavy wefts to these small sections. The poor little erector pili muscles will give it all they have to hold onto the hair until one rough hair brushing or one more tight ponytail finishes the job and bye-bye hair. Although the hair will regrow as these so called “baby hairs,” the process takes longer and over time, will produce finer hair. Repeating this cycle every 8-10 weeks could cause Cicatricial Alopecia, the scaring of the follicle resulting in permanent hair loss. So how do we know if this is happening?

While this may look like dandruff, it is actually clusters of bulbs that have been pulled out due to tension.

System

Most people lose 50-100 hairs per day. With extensions, the hair that is secured in the braid or bead can not naturally fall away when it enters the telogen phase. It is trapped in the braid or bead, therefore, when you remove the hair extensions at the routine maintenance appointment, these hairs come out of the section and may seem excessive. So how do we know if the hair came out due to natural telogen or from excessive tension?

Here are some ways to determine if there is tension damage at a routine maintenance. Prior to removing the extensions:

• Look for evidence of density loss: patches that look thin or even bald.

• Determine if there are signs of irritation or inflammation: areas where the scalp is red, has pimples or scabs.

• Look for areas where there may be clusters of bulbs: bulbs that are all at the same height away from the braid or bead.

When tension damage happens, the bulbs will generally release at around the same time, therefore they will present themselves as clusters.

You might want to run away from sewn methods of applying hair extensions after reading this, so, I want to reassure you that there are better ways to sew hair that reduce the tension and allow for a comfortable and stable application. A low-tension application method starts with a loose base that is secure, yet allows for movement in the biological hair. Reducing the tension at the base then allows for each stitch to secure the wefts but not pull the hair out of the follicle.

You also want to look for even distribution of weight throughout the track line, so the entire row is growing out uniformly. And finally, just ask your guest! If something is hurting or feels uncomfortable, stop and check the section, reduce the tension, eliminate the tight beads and replace with loose sections that allow for up and down movement easily.

After removing extensions, client has lost density and what appears to be baby hairs is actually breakage.

Building a Luxury Brand

In an era where consumers increasingly seek personalized experiences and premium offerings, establishing a luxury brand requires thoughtful strategies that resonate with clientele looking for excellence. We have cultivated a brand that epitomizes luxury. This article sheds light on the essential elements that contribute to conveying a luxurious experience in our offerings, environment, and marketing while ensuring our clientele feels valued and pampered.

We listen and care about the individual. Like their hair loss, each person that sits in our chair is unique, and therefore requires personalized attention and time.

Additionally, communication is paramount when conveying luxury. Our professional staff engages clients with a warm, knowledgeable demeanor while using professional language that reflects our expertise. This elevated communication style cultivates an atmosphere of exclusivity and care, which is foundational to luxury branding.

Conveying the Essence of Luxury

Uniquely Designed Space: Creating an inviting, luxurious environment is crucial to our branding strategy. When clients enter our clinic, they are greeted with a tastefully designed space that combines elegance with comfort. We have carefully selected decor that reflects our modern first rate services while incorporating elements of nature to create a tranquil atmosphere. Our space is large, open and bright. Our color palette is neutral and timeless, allowing for seasonal changes and accents.

Establishing our clinic as a luxury brand begins with the very first interaction a client has with us. To convey luxury, we emphasize service quality over quantity. Each client consultation is personally tailored, focusing on the client’s unique hair loss concerns and aspirations. This individualized approach not only builds trust but also enhances the value of our offerings. In today’s digital commerce world, there is premium luxury in personalized services. That’s what we aim to do with each client.

We also have dedicated staff, many who wear hair, managing client relations. Having the experience of "wearing hair" and participating in our treatments enables our client relations staff to truly speak from experience and the heart. Nothing beats transparent, honest communication as an integral part of building a luxury brand.

Luxury experience is building long lasting relationships with clients. We are there to support our clients from the consultation process onward. Clients should feel like they’re being taken care of every step of the way, and always have a place to turn.

Ambiance: Our space features modern yet soothing music, carefully curated to be light and upbeat. It avoids the overly serene tones typical of traditional spas in favor of a positive and bright atmosphere designed to instill confidence and trust in clients seeking services for their hair and scalp concerns.

Scent & Aromatherapy: A signature scent greets clients upon entering, achieved through subtle aromatherapy that evokes calmness and luxury without being overwhelming. It sets a mood that’s both relaxing and professional. We have diffusers located throughout our space and use natural essential oil blends that include

ingredients like lavender, Roman chamomile, and clary sage. The scent is floral, earthy, and citrusy and creates a harmonious, peaceful, and tranquil atmosphere.

Curated Refreshments: Our refreshments bar offers clients a selection of artisanal coffees, herbal teas, and seasonal beverages. Additionally, our on-site holistic nutritionist curates specialty beverages that include ingredients like collagen. Our holistic approach to trichology is from both the inside out and outside in! These minor but impactful offerings can add value to the client’s experience and help make their time at your clinic a memorable one.

Exceptional Service Offerings

Luxury is often defined by the additional touches that elevate the experience. During our services, clients enjoy uniquely curated treatments that further distinguish us from competitors. For example:

Soothing Eye Masks: We utilize jade and amethyst eye masks during scalp treatments, which not only enhance the experience but also promote relaxation and rejuvenation.

Hand Massages: Simple yet effective, these add-on services provide comfort and show our dedication to a holistic client experience.

Advanced Treatments: We incorporate cutting-edge technologies with our scalp treatments such as red light therapy and microneedling for facial rejuvenation, which underscore our commitment to preventative and corrective solutions.

Marketing that Speaks Luxury

Marketing is another avenue through which we encapsulate the luxury essence of our brand. Our strategies focus on storytelling, highlighting the experience rather than merely the services.

Visual Storytelling: We employ highquality imagery, showcasing our serene environment, expert staff, and transformative results. The visuals resonate with our high-end clientele, demonstrating our clinic as an essential destination for their hair and scalp needs.

Collaborations: Partnering with brands that align with our ethos enhances our image. We work with luxury hair and scalp treatment brands and lifestyle influencers, creating content that emphasizes the seamless connection between premium personal care and hair treatment. We also collaborate with many of our clients who communicate luxury through sharing their first-rate experiences with our products and services.

Digital Presence: Our online presence reflects sophistication. The website is minimalist yet informative, ensuring an easy navigation experience. Social media accounts are curated to showcase a lifestyle rather than just services, drawing clients into a luxurious narrative. We maintain consistency in branding along all platforms.

Thoughtful Vendor/ Partnership Selection

Choosing partners that align with our brand ethos is key to building a luxury experience. We work exclusively with top-tier companies who are leaders in their fields, ensuring that our clients receive only the highest quality treatments and products on the international market today. These partnerships are founded on shared values of excellence, transparency, proven clinical research (especially important with trichological therapies and treatments) and

ethical business practices.

Building a luxury brand involves a comprehensive strategy encompassing service, environment, marketing, and partnerships. By paying attention to the finer details and consistently providing exceptional experiences, we foster a space that truly embodies luxury. By personalizing each client experience, investing in our clients’ well-being, and continually innovating our offerings, we aim to differentiate ourselves from others by creating a brand of lasting excellence in hair loss solutions.

I think, to a large extent, there are interchangeable elements of luxury all businesses should implement. Luxury is an experience that can be conveyed in many ways depending on who you are as a brand. How do we define luxury as a brand? For Truly You, we believe luxury is creating a space that helps clients feel safe enough to rediscover who they truly are and be themselves again. Everything we do aims to communicate this, which is OUR unique brand of luxury.

As we look forward to the next chapter in our clinic’s journey, we remain dedicated to the principles that have guided us for over three decades, ensuring that luxury is not just a promise but a cherished experience for every client who walks through our doors.

Safely Lighten Alternative Hair

with Rit® Color Remover

As experts in hair color, extensions, and non-surgical hair replacement, we strongly advise against lightening alternative human hair. However, we can help you explore other options that may be more suitable for your specific needs.

Utilizing Rit® Color Remover can help you lighten dark human hair systems, toppers, and wigs; even a Level 1 Black! This technique is recommended for knot bleaching, highlighting, or overall human hair lightening. This method is primarily recommended for lace, or non-skin base, systems, and will only work on human (not synthetic) hair.

Directions for Rit® Color Remover Technique

Step 1: Bleaching Desired Human Hair Areas

Preparation: Mix bleach and 20-volume developer to a thick consistency that allows your brush to stand upright. (Do not exceed 20 volume developer!)

Timing: Ideal processing time should start at 5 minutes and should not exceed 10 minutes.

Target Areas: Apply the bleach mixture to the specific areas you want to lighten. This could include hair knots, entire head of hair, or highlights.

Step 2: Rinse & Towel Dry

Rinse: Thoroughly rinse the bleached hair with warm to hot water. Shampooing is optional, but if you choose to shampoo, use a gentle, moisturizing formula.

Dry: Gently towel dry the entire hair system.

Step 3: Prepare the Rit® Solution

Boiling Water: Boil water in a kettle or pot, microwave, coffee maker…

Mix with Rit® Powder: Pour the boiling water into a glass or plastic bowl (avoid metal or lightweight plastic that would melt). Add Rit® powder to the water until it becomes cloudy.

Step 4: Dip the Base, Hair, or Both

Dip: Immerse the desired areas (base, hair, or both) into the boiling water and Rit® mixture.

Coloring Process: Continue dipping until the color runoff stops.

Materials Needed:

• (Hair) Bleach

• 20 Volume Developer

• Color Brush

• Rit® Color Remover

• Bowl

• Boiling Water

• Toner, if needed

Step 5: Towel Dry & Check the Color. Continue to Lighten if Necessary

If color needs to be lightened further, repeat steps 3-5.

Step 6: Tone Hair

Once the color is stripped, cocktail the correct toner, and tone hair to desired tonality.

Step 7: Shampoo &

Condition

Once desired tone is achieved, use a moisturizing shampoo and the correct conditioner for the hair to seal the cuticle.

The photo above demonstrates a subtle but significant change - the knots at the front hairline have been bleached. This technique creates a more natural appearance, mimicking the look of hair growing from the scalp.

Time-Saving Strategies to Boost Your Online Presence

While I was at the HairNow24 conference, many business owners shared their struggles with social media. The overwhelming response? They just don’t have the time to create consistent content. Between managing appointments, client relationships, and daily operations, finding extra hours for social media can feel impossible. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and there are ways to make it work without sacrificing hours each week. With the right strategies, you can keep your social media presence active, engaging, and impactful, even on a tight schedule.

posts in one go, saving you time and mental energy. Try blocking out a few hours each month to create at least twenty social media posts. This approach helps you stay consistent, plan for relevant dates, and stay ahead of your calendar. For example, you won’t miss observances like International Alopecia Day in August, allowing you to align your content with timely topics.

Time-Saving Templates for Consistent Branding

Batch Content Creation for Efficiency

Setting aside dedicated time for content creation, or “batching,” makes a big difference in efficiency. Rather than creating content in bits and pieces, batching allows you to stay focused and produce multiple

Using templates is an effective way to create consistent, branded posts without spending hours on design. They make it easy to produce polished, cohesive content that reinforces your brand’s visual identity in minutes. Tools like Canva allow you to set up reusable brand-specific templates, so all you have to do is drop in images and update text.

• Before-and-After Templates: Create variations to keep posts fresh while maintaining a consistent look.

• Testimonial Templates: Use a standardized layout for client reviews, adding a space for a client photo (with permission) to make the post more relatable.

Client-Created Content for Credibility

User-generated content (UGC) is invaluable for building trust and saving time. Encourage clients to tag you in their posts or leave reviews on social media. For instance, a “selfie station” at your clinic lets clients snap a quick photo posttreatment, sharing their experience with their network and amplifying your reach with minimal effort.

UGC is powerful because potential clients trust what others say about your brand more than your own promotions. Encourage clients to share "in-action" photos—whether it’s swimming or attending events with their new hair system. Reshare these posts on your feed to highlight real client stories and boost engagement naturally.

Repurpose High-Performing Content for Maximum Impact

Repurposing content allows you to get more value from your best posts without extra effort. If a post performed well in the past, consider reusing it with minor tweaks. High-engagement content often resonates again with a new perspective. Organize your content for easy access to repurpose later.

A high-quality social media management system lets you store, analyze, and reschedule top-performing posts. This keeps your feed fresh and active without constantly taking time to create new content.

Additionally, adapt content from other formats. For example, turn a popular blog post into a video, infographic, or carousel post to reach new audiences and present familiar content in a fresh way.

Use AI to

Speed Up Your Content Creation

AI tools can help you produce content quickly. By using an AI tool, like ChatGPT,

you can create captions that align with your brand voice in a fraction of the time. Start with a clear prompt, including your tone, hook, and a client pain point. For example, a prompt might include: “Feeling self-conscious about thinning hair? You’re not alone. Our treatments can help you regain confidence. Book a consultation today.” AI helps you create targeted posts with minimal time investment, letting you maintain consistency without the extra hours.

Streamline and Simplify with a Social Media Management System

A robust social media management system, like Painless Posting™, can streamline every part of your strategy, helping you stay consistent without spending hours each day. Look for features like automated timing to post at peak engagement hours and automatic branding to keep visuals cohesive.

Multi-platform publishing is essential,

allowing you to share content across channels with one click. Advanced systems even include AI and design tools for generating captions and creating visuals directly in the platform. Content repurposing features make it easy to reschedule top posts, keeping your feed engaging without constant new content.

Saving time and building a powerful online presence don’t have to be mutually exclusive. By embracing batch creation, using templates, leveraging client-created content, repurposing top-performing posts, utilizing AI, and managing everything in one comprehensive system, you can create a social media strategy that works for you. For hair restoration businesses, these methods allow you to share client transformations, engage with potential clients, and educate your audience—all with less effort and more impact. Implement these techniques, and you’ll find that social media can be both efficient and rewarding.

Photos Compelling Selling & Creating Before After &

In the realm of beauty and personal transformation, I find very few things that convey the impact of change as powerfully as before and after pictures. For women especially, hair transformations can be deeply meaningful, symbolizing self-expression, confidence, and personal evolution. Whether it's a change in hair regrowth, dramatic hair topper, or customer color or cut to a wig, capturing these transformations requires skill, planning, sensitivity to your client, and a savvy business approach to creating stunning “before & after” photos.

Creating Great Content: Decide what you want to showcase, be it your wig or topper skills, building a portfolio, or launching a new product. Your goal is to generate monthly revenue beyond the sale of your initial hair pieces with additional product sales as well.

Identify Your Target Audience: Determine the demographic you want to reach. Consider factors such as age, hair type, style preferences, and location. This helps tailor your recruitment efforts to attract the right participants.

Creating And Capturing

Finding the Right Model: Recruiting the right person who will support you and your vision for a dramatic “before & after” transformative photo shoot requires a strategic approach to ensure enthusiastic participation. Encouraging and appreciative approach offers an amazing energy for your photo shoot which will reflect in the quality of your pictures.

Timing: Hair regrowth can take time to show results, but can create the most compelling and captivating “before & after” photos. Since it represents a segment in time, captivating your audience will create more eyes on your final photos for your website and social channels.

Craft a Compelling Message: Clearly articulate what your model will gain from the experience. Emphasizing the most important benefit of modeling is helping others by sharing their own journey. Incentives can include offering professional hair transformation, complimentary services, and hair pieces. Be sure to include a

generous take home gift basket of products to show your appreciation for your model.

Offer Incentives: Consider offering incentives such as complimentary services, professional photos, or discounts on future appointments. Incentives can motivate potential participants to join the project.

Leverage Online Platforms

Social Media Campaigns: Utilize platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) to reach a broad audience. Create eye-catching posts and stories showcasing previous transformations and detailing the upcoming shoot.

Influencers and Bloggers: Collaborate with local influencers or beauty bloggers who can promote your project to their followers. Their endorsement can add credibility and attract a larger audience.

Online Communities: Join and post inside online forums and groups related to beauty, hairstyling, and local community activities. Engage with members and share your proposal, emphasizing the unique opportunity.

Utilize Your Network

Existing Clients: Reach out to your current clients who might be interested in participating. They already trust your skills and may be excited to be part of your project.

Word of Mouth: Encourage satisfied clients and friends to spread the word. Personal recommendations can be highly effective in attracting participants.

Photo Session Day

Lighting and Setting: Lighting plays a pivotal role in photography, particularly in showcasing hair transformations. Natural light at sunrise or sunset offers the most beautiful colors and accuracy in color representation. You can always use extra lighting or photography shade for extra softness and enhancement. If shooting indoors, choose well-lit spaces or use studio lighting setups that complement the hair colors and textures.

Capturing the Transformation: During the shoot, document each step of the transformation process, including your client’s natural style prior to applying your hair piece. Start with clear, detailed before photos from different angles. These shots should capture the entire process of the transformation. Use different settings such as portrait, pano, and photo mode for a variety of different looks. Taking short videos can also give you extra digital assets to entice your future customers when considering who to go to for their next hair topper, wig, or hair re-growth products and treatments.

Variety of Styling: Experiment with different styling methods to highlight the hair's shine, volume, and movement and showcase variety of different hair styles from one hair piece. Encourage the client to express themselves confidently, as their comfort and posture can significantly enhance the visual impact of the transformation.

Post-Production and Presentation: After capturing the images, select the best shots that highlight the transformation effectively. Post-production editing directly from your device can enhance colors, contrast, and clarity while maintaining authenticity. Ensure the before and after photos are presented side by side for a clear comparison, demonstrating the impact of the transformation.

Sharing and Celebrating: Once finalized, share the before and after images with the client. Celebrate their journey and transformation together. With their permission, use these images to showcase your skills and attract new clients through social media, your website, or portfolio.

Transformative before and after pictures of women's hair are more than just visual documentation. They embody stories of self-discovery, confidence, and empowerment. By focusing on careful planning, skilled execution, and collaborative spirit, stylists and photographers can create images that not only capture physical changes but also celebrate personal growth and natural beauty.

Each photo session becomes an opportunity to inspire others and showcase the transformative power of hairstyling and photography in enhancing one's identity and self-expression.

To the Rescue Inventory Saves the Day

I have been a cosmetologist since 1996. Being a part of the AHLC has been a huge asset and learning tool to help navigate this more recent part of my profession. Over the years, I have honed my skills in the art of cutting, coloring, and styling so that I felt confident to give any client that walked in the door a professional, finished look for their investment.

In 2015, I had a client bring me top pieces purchased from the internet in hopes that I could integrate them into her hairstyle. I felt frustrated with the poor construction, hair quality, and my inability to customize the color; the journey began to find sources that would help me satisfy this new customer demand.

I found an ad for the AHLC in the back of a trade magazine. In September of 2017, I attended my first AHLC show. The classes were so helpful, but I realized I had much to learn. I have attended every year since, investing in classes and developing relationships with manufacturers and vendors.

One thing I have learned is that you have to have inventory on hand for consultations, as well as same day sales. So, I started to invest in a small inventory of wigs and hair pieces. Manufacturers often offer discounts and year end closeouts on inventory. For me, that is a really fun part of the show, as I am always excited to add to my salon collection. At this year's conference, I found a beautiful hand-tied wig, medium blonde, 12”/14” length, along with a few other prize pieces.

on her own, was unable to work at her job as a CNA, and had to travel out of town for treatment.
