YEAR IN REVIEW 2011
FROM THE PRESIDENT We are always glad to leave the old year behind and approach the next one with the optimism borne of freshness. While being your president has been a heavy responsibility, and my own burdens have been large, it was an opportunity to serve, and for that reason gratifying and hard to leave behind. The best part was working with a Board of Directors, Staff and Committee Chairs committed to creating outstanding programs and events for our members. Some examples: Vivian Loftness, FAIA, visited us early in the year and spoke on her sustainable design research, and our own COTE Committee offered the AIA+2030 TM professional development course. Many fanfares and congratulations to the committee for accomplishing a ton of work; the course is about half over, and so far it is receiving rave reviews. The Design in the Midwest and the Midwestern City series drew in speakers from throughout the Midwest, including urban thinkers Lavea Brachman of Greater Ohio and Ann Pendleton-Jullian of the Knowlton School of Architecture, leaders and interns of the Urban Design Centers of Ohio – Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati, and notable Ohio design architects shared their work with us. Finally, for the annual meeting, Rob Livesey engaged Blair Kamin, architecture critic of The Chicago Tribune, in a lively conversation on the state of architecture.
Camp Architecture, now in its second year,
welcomed 24 eager 9-13 year olds for its weeklong daycamp last summer. Complete with puppy dog clients, popsicle stick bridges and a tour of the campus, the camp again proved school-age children are excited about architecture. The Healthcare Committee served up a tour of the new Children’s Hospital, and an impressive presentation of OSU’s massive Hospital Expansion Project – both wildly popular. We have spent the last year nurturing the Columbus Architecture Foundation Board while they work through the birth pangs of the Center for Architecture and Design. They presented successful events, gave us grants for our outreach programs, and they raised a good deal of money toward the renovation of our space. We look forward to some amazing programs benefiting architecture and the design arts in the coming year.
YEAR IN REVIEW 2011
We were the recipients of several grants this past year, including one from the American Architectural Foundation for Camp Architecture, an Opportunity Grant from AIA Ohio, and a national grant from AIA/Hanley Wood in support of our efforts towards the Columbus 200 Bicentennial. Watch for this exciting programming in the Fall of 2012. But what was most impressive to me is the cadre of architects who give their time and energy for the good of us all, knowing that giving creates its own return. It is not just altruistic; it’s a chance to give back to the profession that gives us our identity, our mode of thinking. With that in mind, we thought to list some of the ways AIA members can contribute: Share time with colleagues once a month at a chapter meeting Participate in the work of a committee that benefits the entire chapter Join the Board Sponsor a scholarship for a child to attend Camp Architecture Spend a day with the kids at Camp Architecture Be proud to put AIA behind your name. Thanks to the Board, the Executive Committee and the Columbus AIA staff for all your support and dedication to service in the last year.

NATIONAL & STATE ISSUES
GRASSROOTS AIA NATIONAL GRASSROOTS Rebuild And Renew: The AIA’s Plan For Rebuilding Main Street
Each year, representatives from AIA Columbus - along with component executives and volunteer leaders from around the country and the world - attend AIA Grassroots, the national leadership conference held annually in Washington, DC. AIA leaders gather to learn first hand the federal advocacy agenda and meet with their congressional representatives and senators on issues affecting the profession. This year the AIA offered a 4-step plan for rebuilding America: 1. Unfreeze credit and create jobs by passing legislation that promotes sounder, more straightforward financing alternatives 2. Remove regulatory burdens that hold small businesses back 3. Increase the Energy Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction from the current $1.80/sf to $3.00/sf. 4. Pass a transportation bill and enact transportation reform legislation that gives people real choices in how they move.
AIA OHIO GRASSROOTS Day at the Statehouse Governor John Kasich drew architects, lawmakers and the press to AIA Ohio's biannual Grassroots attended by members from Columbus and around the state. This year, in addition to Governor Kasich’s remarks, AIA Ohio honored past president and Chairman of the Ohio Senate Finance Committee, Christopher Widener, FAIA, with AIA Ohio's "Good Government Award." Much like national Grassroots, AIA Ohio members visited their Representatives and Senators to discuss four legislative issues important to the members: 1. Adoption of a capital bill to simultaneously create jobs, improve our economy and spawn healthier, more sustainable communities. 2. Expansion of Construction Reform that utilizes three alternative methods of construction. 3. Regulation of Change Orders (HB 176) and carefully scrutinizing the use of change orders to increase the scope of a project. 4. Supporting the Historic Preservation Tax Credit as an economic tool to refuel the construction industry, leverage private and federal investment in Ohio, encourage redevelopment of small towns and urban centers.
NATIONAL CONVENTION Regional Design Revolution: Ecology Matters
AIA members convened in New Orleans for the 2011 National AIA Convention Regional Design Revolution: Ecology Matters. Attendees heard keynote presentations from leading experts, were able to attend more than 130 continuing education seminars and Design Salons, learn about award recipients and more. The Ohio Valley Region saw two of its own – Deb Kunce, FAIA [AIA Indianapolis] and Jud Kline, FAIA [AIA Cleveland] elevated to the College of Fellows. Additionally, Deb Kunce was elected a Vice President on the national AIA Board of Directors.

CHAPTER PROGRAMMING In 2011, AIA Columbus presented a year-long series, Design in the Midwest and the Midwestern City, which explored issues confronting Midwestern design professionals today. The series began with a close look at an issue affecting many of the great cities of Ohio: the shrinking city phenomenon. The series continued with an
examination of how these cities are reinventing themselves through smart growth and creative urban initiatives. We heard about the “new design economy” and how the profession has changed and is still changing. And we considered the role architecture criticism plays in the Midwest and specifically Columbus.
SHRINKING CITIES
“MIDWESTERN CITIES AT A TURNING POINT”
Featuring Lavea Brachman and Ann Pendleton-Julian
This first program in the series centered around the idea of shrinking cities and the “out-migration” of dense populations. We examined Ohio and how we might re-imagine, restore and reshape the state and its cities. The speakers outlined a new vision for Ohio designed to compete in the “next economy.”
URBAN INITIATIVES “ADDRESSING URBAN ISSUES AND OPPORTUNITIES”
Featuring the Design Centers from Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland
Directors from the three urban design centers in Ohio - the Community Design Center of Cincinnati, the Neighborhood Design Center of Columbus and the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative - discussed how collaborative efforts with their respective universities can lead to exciting local initiatives to further engage architecture students.
SMART GROWTH
“TOOLS FOR COLUMBUS AND OHIO" Featuring Galina Tachieva
Smart growth was the next topic in the series and examined how we can make our communities more livable, walkable, competitive and diverse. Galina Tachieva, director of town planning at Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ) and author of the Sprawl Repair Manual, presented an innovative toolbox for redeveloping and updating aging suburban patterns through regional, community and micro-scale strategies. Presented in partnership with the Columbus chapter of the Urban Land Institute.

OHIO DESIGN
“DESIGN LEADERSHIP IN OHIO”
Featuring Michael Schuster, FAIA, Mary Rogero, AIA & Tim Hawk, AIA
This panel discussion focused on the different and diverse ways of creating great architecture in Ohio. Three architects from around Ohio discussed their work and addressed some of the weightier issues facing design leaders in Ohio.
ECONOMY “THE NEW DESIGN ECONOMY” Featuring Stephen Fiskum, AIA
Steve Fiskum, AIA Minnesota, presented his insights on how the design and construction industries are evolving as our economy’s “new normal” unfolds in the wake of today’s difficult economic times. Faced with significant changes in technology, innovation, practice management and a continually sluggish economy, architects heard how the design and construction industries are evolving and what this means for client expectations, team relationships and design processes. Presented in partnership with AIA Ohio.
CRITICISM
“A DIALOGUE WITH ARCHITECTURE CRITIC BLAIR KAMIN”
Featuring Blair Kamin in a dialogue moderated by Robert Livesey, FAIA
The series concluded with AIA Columbus hosting an evening of dialogue between Blair Kamin, Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic of The Chicago Tribune, and Professor Robert Livesey, FAIA, from the Knowlton School of Architecture. The two engaged in a lively and informal dialogue about design in the Midwest and Columbus and the role architecture criticism plays in today's times.

KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION AIA Columbus’ Knowledge Committees offered programs during the past year that focused on engaging, relevant topics in a variety of formats to appeal to the Chapter’s diverse membership. Opportunities ranged from building tours of healthcare facilities, to a highly specialized course dedicated to sustainable design.
AIA members had ample opportunities to complete yearly Continuing Education requirements, as we offered more than 40 learning units. Providing content-rich and varied continuing education programs continues to be our goal, and we are proud to highlight some of those programs here.
COMMITTEE ON THE ENVIRONMENT “SUSTAINABLE DESIGN FOR HEALTH, PRODUCTIVITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT” Presented By Vivian Loftness, FAIA
Vivian Loftness, FAIA gave a presentation about the importance of sustainable design for the built environment. She outlined the major benefits of sustainable design in many different categories, from using passive strategies, the implementation of new energy-efficient technologies, to smart growth and urban land use.
AIA+2030 PROFESSIONAL SERIES: TM “RADICAL ENERGY SAVINGS FOR EVERY PROJECT” AIA Columbus implemented the AIA+2030 Professional Series: Radical Energy Savings for Every Project,TM which helps design professionals create buildings that meet the ambitious energy efficiency goals of the 2030 Challenge. Ten 4-hour sessions offer strategies to reach 60% fossil fuel greenhouse gas emissions, giving design professionals the knowledge and leverage to create next-generation, super-efficient buildings - and provide firms with the skills that will set them apart in the marketplace. Topics of sessions this year have included climate responsive design, load reductions, and the importance of the thermal envelope. Presented in partnership with the United States Green Building Council Central Ohio Chapter.
SMALL PROJECT PRACTITIONERS “MUNCH AND EARNS”
Each month, the Small Project Practitioners Committee offers a one-hour continuing education presentation by AIA CE Providers. Sessions this year have included topics such as “Agile Interiors in Healthcare Environments” and “The Proper Application of Storefront, Window Walls and Curtain Walls.”

TECHNOLOGY & PRACTICE
CONTINUING EDUCATION
BIM FROM AN OWNER’S PERSPECTIVE
CATCH-UP DAY
Brought to us by the Technology in Architectural Practice Committee, this session took a unique look at the impact of industry transformations being driven by Building Information Modeling (BIM). Four industry leaders and technology savvy owners served as panelists for this dynamic discussion, where they spoke to their expectations of how BIM is changing the way they manage the facilities they own.
Although most of AIA Columbus’ programming counts towards continuing education learning units, the AIA Columbus Continuing Education Committee and Ron Blank’s CE Academy, Inc. teamed up at the end of 2011 to put on a day-long series of continuing education opportunities for our members and those around the community.
EMERGING PROFESSIONALS The Emerging Professionals Committee engages associate members and architects within their first ten years of licensure through programs and activities that encourage membership, participation, and leadership in the Chapter. This year, the Committee offered a wide variety of programs and activities designed to provide educational and networking opportunities for interns and newly registered architects. These programs included Happy Hours and tours of new buildings around the Columbus area, including the Highlands Park Family Aquatic Center and Midwestern Auto Group.
HEALTHCARE NATIONWIDE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL TOUR Attendees to this tour had the opportunity to view parts of the newly constructed (some still in progress) patient tower at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
OSU MEDICAL CENTER EXPANSION PROJECT
The design leaders shared the programmatic intent, innovation in project scope, planning, design, landscape and campus strategy for this $1.1 billion project.
“AN EYE ON THE ED” Presented By Frank Zilm, FAIA, FACHA
Frank Zilm joined us last spring to present on emergency care design, one of the most visible, dramatic, and complex healthcare services. With continued growth projected and increasing scope of services, the design of emergency facilities presents a unique challenge for patient care, functional efficiency, and financial viability. Current operational trends and design implications were explored, and participants were encouraged to participate in the discussion.
