MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT JAMES “SANDY BRESLER, AIA
As we wrap up another year at AIA Columbus, I would like to recap some of the 2012 highlights. Nothing would have been as successful as it was without the teamwork of all those who contributed to our organization. This includes the Board of Directors, Staff, Committee Chairs and most importantly, the members who contribute throughout the year with time, resources, and sometimes even pure and simple manual labor. Working with the caliber of individuals we have in AIA Columbus is an honor and a privilege. I sincerely believe we have one of the hardest working and effective local chapters in the country. 2012 was a significant year for grants received, including grants from both the AIA Trust and AIA Ohio. These contributed to the IdeaBook project of Design Week, an AIA Component Scholarship grant, and an AIA/ Hanley Wood grant for support of programming for the Columbus Bicentennial. AIA Columbus had eight formal Chapter Meetings this year. Topics included a discussion of the East Franklinton planning effort, Columbus firm presentations via the BIG_small Forum, and a discussion with Larry Speck, FAIA, about connecting with the younger generation. Finally, Robert Ivy, FAIA, Executive Vice President of the AIA spent a day last fall with the chapter, touring the KSA and OSU campus, participating in two roundtable discussions and finally speaking to the membership at the Annual Meeting through a discussion with Bob Loversidge, FAIA, concerning the future of the AIA and the upcoming repositioning of the Institute. This past year, we also moved into the new Center for Architecture and Design in the historic Lazarus Building. We would like to thank all of those who put so much work into making this possible. We would also like to thank those who contributed materials, equipment, furnishings, and temporary space from which to

conduct chapter business to make The Center what it is. There is still some work to do to finalize improvements, but certainly it is going to be a fantastic location from which to promote architecture and design in the city of Columbus. Lastly, 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of AIA Columbus. 2013 chapter president John Kelleher, AIA, has already begun working on programs for the year that celebrate this important milestone for the chapter. Stay up to date with these upcoming chapter events by visiting the website, reading DesignMatters, and stopping by to visit the new Center for Architecture and Design! Thank you again for the opportunity to serve you as your 2012 AIA Columbus Chapter President.
NATIONAL ADVOCACY & LEADERSHIP
2012 AIA GRASSROOTS: LEADERSHIP ADVOCACY COMMUNICATION
Executive Director Gwen Berlekamp, AIA Columbus President Sandy Bresler and President-Elect John Kelleher attended the 2012 AIA Grassroots Leadership and Legislative Conference in Washington, DC in March. The year’s theme - LEADERSHIP ADVOCACY COMMUNICATION - as described by Mickey Jacob, FAIA, First Vice President and 2012 Grassroots Chair, - “was designed to advance our skills to increase the public awareness of the value of architecture and the important role we play as architects as stewards of the built environment.” Our visits to Capitol Hill are always a highlight of Grassroots. This year the national advocacy agenda focused on the following issues:
THE AIA ADVOCACY AGENDA: 1. Removing Barriers to Private Sector Lending Requesting support for the Capital Access for Main Street Act 2. Saving Energy, Creating Jobs Encouraging an expansion of the federal Energy EfficientCommercial Building Tax Deduction, or 179D 3. Helping Small Firms Thrive Asking Congress to pass the Small Business Protection Act of 2012 4. Revitalizing America’s Neighborhoods Encouraging Congress to maintain transportation funding levels with investment in all modes of transportation.
AIA NATIONAL CONVENTION: DESIGN CONNECTS
AIA members convened in Washington, DC for the 2012 National AIA Convention: DESIGN CONNECTS. Attendees heard keynote presentations from two-time Pulitzer Prize winning historian David McCullough, and Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan. A special session, Architects of Healing, honored Daniel Libeskind, FAIA, David Childs, FAIA, Michael Aran, AIA, Craig Dykers, AIA, Steve Davis, FAIA, Santiago Calatrava, FAIA, and Robert Davidson and the role each played in the rebuilding and memorials at the World Trade Center. AIA Columbus Executive Director Gwen Berlekamp, CAE - in her role as a Vice President on the CACE (Council of Architectural Component Executives) Executive Committee - was invited to attend a special AIA Leadership White House Briefing at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. AIA National leaders listened to a panel discussion with Obama Administration officials from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Transportation, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Office of Management and Budget and shared their concern on the issues facing small businesses, international trade, energy efficient buildings, transportation, community development and livable communities.
John Kelleher joined the AIA Ohio delegation to visit the Senate and met with staff from the offices of Senator Rob Portman and Senator Sherrod Brown. Gwen and Sandy, along with chapter member and State Architect Lane Beougher, visited representatives Pat Tiberi [OH12] and Steve Stivers [OH15].

The recent recession was difficult for all of us. Now, Columbus finds itself on the upswing, and the future of this city is now receiving local and national attention. Architects, designers and planners are at the forefront of these discussions since they play a vital role in shaping their surroundings. Design for healthy communities, business development, and how to engage the younger generation of architects were lively topics for discussion this year.
BIG:SMALL AIA Columbus offered the BIG:small forum and engaged three local firms of varying sizes to present recent work, research initiatives and firm culture as a means to expose the diversity of practice in our region. Presenters included: Curt Moody, FAIA, Moody Nolan; Tom Matheny, AIA, of Schooley Caldwell Associates; and Tim Lai, AIA, sole practitioner. They spoke about challenges, issues and firm culture at different scales within architectural practice.
HEALTHY PEOPLE, PLACES, AND COMMUNITY David Rouse of Wallace, Roberts and Todd, and Tedd Hardesty of EDGE explored the role of planning and design at the community-wide, neighborhood and site scales in improving public health and promoting healthy lifestyles. They took into consideration various public health issues and cited a variety of case studies.

EAST FRANKLINTON: A [VERY] POSSIBLE DREAM David Dixon of Goody Clancy and Vincent Papsidero of the City of Columbus presented on the up-andcoming neighborhood, of East Franklinton, marked now by vacant lots and empty warehouses. They discussed implementation plans for this neighborhood to join other revitalized neighborhoods in Columbus’ emergence as a vibrant urban center.
2012 CHAPTER MEETINGS CULTIVATE RELATIONSHIPS THAT LEAD TO WORK: 4 STEPS TO BECOMING A TRUSTED ADVISOR AND BEATING THE RFP PROCESS
AIA Columbus invited Jean Leathers, President of Practice Clarity, LLC, to lead a round-table about the importance of architect/client relationships. She explored a 4-step process that reminds architects to be clear about their firm’s position, and how that position drives a meaningful strategy to select clients, cultivate relationships and win work.
A DIALOGUE WITH ROBERT IVY, FAIA Robert Ivy, FAIA, and Executive Vice President of the American Institute of Architects, engaged in dialogue with Robert Loversidge, FAIA of local Columbus firm Schooley Caldwell Associates. The two discussed trends within the industry and in different sectors, the role of the AIA, the importance of design for healthier communities, and other critical issues to the profession of architecture.
CONNECTING WITH THE NEXT GENERATION This presentation by Larry Speck, FAIA from the University of Texas at Austin, challenged the profession of architecture to redefine good design to address the sincere interests of a new generation of young architects. Citing recent projects, he discussed a renewed interest in making great places that enhance the everyday lives of ordinary people. THE CENTER FOR ARCHITECT A LITTLE HISTORY
The Center for Architecture and Design was established in 2010 through its parent organization, the Columbus Architecture Foundation. Through lectures, exhibitions, tours, and other programs, The Center is a place where people can explore possibilities for the future of our community here in central Ohio. 2012 marked a year of great strides for the organization. Not only did it produce its first-ever Design Week, but in September, The Center announced plans to move into a new location in the prominent Lazarus Building in downtown Columbus. Beginning in January 2013, AIA Columbus will have a new home in the newly built-out Center for Architecture and Design, just in time to help celebrate the 100th birthday of the Chapter.

2012 DESIGN AWARDS The AIA Columbus Chapter’s annual Design Awards Program recognizes excellence in architectural design by Columbus architects and those within the boundaries of the AIA Columbus Chapter. The program’s purpose is to recognize the achievements for a broad range of architectural activity in order to elevate the general quality of architectural practice, establish a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure performance, inform the public of the breadth and value of architectural practice, and to honor the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to improve the built environment.
AIA Columbus gives out awards in two categories: Honor Award recognizing the highest level of excellence and Merit Award being the second-highest. Participants can submit projects that are both built and unbuilt as long as the majority of the work was done within the previous 5 years. This year’s head juror was Julie Snow, FAIA (right) of Julie Snow Architects from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
