FIRST 100 NEXT 100
celebrating 100 years 2013 was a milestone year for AIA Columbus as the Chapter celebrated its 100th anniversary. Chartered in 1913 with a membership of 31, AIA Columbus was the 35th component of the AIA. G.H. Bulford and Charles Inscho co-served as President that first year. Since then, AIA Columbus has grown to more than 600 members and is one of 268 components nationwide. To commemorate this momentous occasion, the Chapter had a yearlong celebration - themed First 100: Next 100 - and included a number of different programs such as lectures by both historians and futurists, presentations by members of their work on historic architecture, exhibits in the new Center for Architecture and Design, and special initiatives that looked both inward at membership and outward at the local community.
A priority of the year-long celebration was to involve not only our Chapter members, but also to engage as many people as possible. By reaching out, we were able to enhance the public perception about the work architects do. Beginning the year with an inward focus, the Emerging Professionals, with the help of the Fellows, undertook the 100x100 Project. A hundred local members at varying stages in their careers answered a series of questions on camera. The initiative put generations side-by-side and illustrated the range of views within the chapter. This project is described in further detail on page 11. We shifted our focus outward in the second half of the year with ArCHALLENGE. This project highlighted the top architecturally significant projects in Columbus from the turn of the 19th Century to the present. Turn to page 13 for more information on this initiative.

past, present, future Chapter programming for the year was divided into three categories: Past, Present, and Future. COLUMBUS’ HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE February Four local firms presented their methods for addressing historic architecture, whether it is through materiality, structure, programming, or architectural style. Following each firm’s individual presentation, the program ended with a lively panel discussion. COLUMBUS AND MASS TRANSIT: The Past, Present, and Future April Three speakers from different backgrounds looked at historical precedents, current models, and the investigation of future transit plans here in Columbus to put the current conversation into the larger context. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AIA COLUMBUS! May We celebrated our 100th anniversary and debuted the 100x100 Project.
10
REPOSITIONING: The Columbus Conversation June This facilitated conversation allowed members to learn more about and discuss the future of the AIA National Repositioning initiative. DAVID ZACH: FUTURIST September Mr. Zach’s thought-provoking presentation looked at trends and traditions affecting design and the roles that architects, designers and planners can have over the next ten years. COLUMBUS! Presented by Doug Graf, Professor October This personal, and quirky presentation looked at Columbus area architecture since the founding of the city in 1812. At times funny, this session left the participants contemplating the future of Columbus’ urban environment.

100x100 project The 100x100 Project was planned and developed by the AIA Columbus Emerging Professionals Committee, under the light tutelage of the AIA Columbus College of Fellows. Through the medium of film, the program was aimed to take advantage of our professions’ greatest asset – the knowledge and experience of multiple generations of members. With the help of Reece Thompson, an up-and-coming filmmaker from Ohio State University, the committee asked 100 people at varying stages in their careers to engage in conversations about the profession. The filming took place in a series of four social events to make good use of time for those who were participating. Members were divided into groups of 4 (two emerging professionals, and two seasoned veterans). Open-ended discussion questions were posed to the groups, while lighter, more whimsical questions were posed to the individuals waiting.
Following the film sessions, Reece got to work on the enormous task of editing all of the footage into a digestible length. The committee met frequently to view the progress, and direct the overall shape of the film. They also designed a logo for this program, to the right, that would be inserted into the film. The final film, a 45-minute compilation of over 8 hours of footage, was then shown at the 100th anniversary party of AIA Columbus on Tuesday, May 21. The film is divided into sections of subject matter: Why Architecture, Peer Success versus Public Success, On Education, The Practice, The City of Columbus. View the film in its entirety at http://aiacolumbus.org/index.php/ programs-events/100x100-project This project was made possible by a generous AIA 2012 Emerging Professional Grant.

ArCHALLENGE What is your favorite building in Columbus? We posed this question to the public through ArCHALLENGE, the capstone event commemorating the Chapter’s 100th anniversary. Through systematic public engagement, we determined Columbus’ favorite buildings.
CONTEMPORARY WILLIAM OXLEY THOMPSON MEMORIAL LIBRARY
We gathered an independent jury of architects, preservationists and architectural aficionados to select the most significant and iconic structures in Columbus from the past 100 years. Divided into four categories - Late 19th Century, Early 20th Century, Mid-20th Century and Contemporary – the 64 buildings represented what our jurors felt were the “best-of-the-best.” Through a weekly feature in Columbus Underground, a “hyper-local, community-driven” online media outlet and one of our sponsors, and a multi-layered marketing, public relations and social media campaign, we challenged the public to consider architecture in our city and directed them to a dedicated website filled with information about
each building. The public was invited to vote for their favorites. The top vote-getters in each category were announced each week and advanced until the top four buildings – one in each category – were determined. Winners were announced mid-November during the 2013 AIA Columbus Design Awards. The ArCHALLENGE website had 4611 total website visits from 3245 unique people, including from as far away as Australia and Asia, that collectively viewed 31,602 pages. Interestingly, more votes were tallied from those not in architecture (61%) demonstrating the project’s reach beyond the design-related professions. ArCHALLENGE confirmed there is considerable interest in architecture among the central Ohio community and an appreciation of the cultural significance it plays in our lives. This program was made possible by a gnerous Advocacy Grant from AIA Ohio.

2013 design awards Each year, AIA Columbus’ Committee on Design recognizes excellence in local architecture through its annual Design Awards Program. The program recognizes achievements for a broad range of architectural activity in order to elevate, to establish, to inform and to honor the general quality of architectural practice, establish a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure performance, inform the public of the breadth and value of architectural practice, and honor the architects, clients and consultants who work together to improve the built environment. Since its inception in 1975, the AIA Columbus Design Awards have recognized more than 235 projects.
Projects range over a broad spectrum of architectural disciplines, from contemporary design to historic preservation, sustainable design, interiors and even to “un-built” projects. The projects displayed here are the recipients of the AIA Columbus 2013 Design Awards. The awards are a testament to collaboration – to teams of architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects, interior designers, and contractors – who worked together to create great design. These awards are also a testament to the clients who place great trust in architects to realize their vision.
In 2013, the lead juror was Sebastian Schmaling, AIA of Johnsen Schmaling Architects out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The conference provides AIA leaders with tools to influence and pursue action to strengthen their components, firms, communities and society at large. Besides attending workshops and general sessions, AIA Columbus leaders scheduled legislative visits on “The Hill and face-to-face meetings with Representatives Patrick Tiberi [OH-12]; Steve Stivers [OH-15] and Joyce Beatty [OH-3].

he center for architecture & design In 2010, AIA Columbus launched The Center for Architecture and Design to engage with the community in an unprecedented way and create a place to experience first-hand the power of great design. It was the culmination of a process that began in 2008 when AIA Columbus commissioned a task force to explore the feasibility of such a public space.
