Repositioning “In May 2014, AIA Columbus asked 1,016 architects and individuals eligible for the ARE to participate in the AIA Columbus Counts member survey. We asked both members and non-members to let us know what they are passionate about, the value of our program offerings, and how to most effectively communicate. We heard back from 244 individuals including those practicing and retired, owner’s representatives, educators, building officials, principals. and intern architects. We heard what works, what doesn’t, and where many see the future of architecture.

AIA

COLUMBUS COUNTS

The survey was the first step in our strategic planning initiative for 2014. The information provided was used to guide the discussions as we planned how to move forward over the next 5 years. We hope that a better understanding of what motivates our local community will help to position our Chapter to be relevant and bring value in the evolving architectural environment.”

PRINCIPALS

For the purpose of this survey, the term “Emerging Professionals refers to someone who has been in architecture for up to 10 years.

AIA Columbus Counts 2014

The AIA Columbus Counts survey separated demographics and then portrayed the information in graphs to see what the members found most important. See the full results at aiacolumbus.org. The Strategic Planning Task Force then used this data to inform our new five-year strategic planning initiative.

Sports League Sports Game

Emerging Professionals are more interested in social events while principals appear to be more interested in learning. However, Design Discussions and Chapter Meetings are events that both parties are interested in.

Grassroots and National Convention AIA Columbus executive leadership went to Washington, DC in March for the AIA Grassroots 2014 Leadership and Legislative Conference – the premier annual gathering for leaders of the American Institute of Architects. This annual conference provides AIA leaders with tools to influence and pursue action that will strengthen their components, firms, communities and society at large. Besides attending workshops and general sessions, AIA Columbus leaders took the AIA‘s federal agenda to Capitol Hill visiting the offices of Congresswoman Joyce Beatty [OH-3]; Congressman Steve Stivers [OH-15]; and Congressman Pat Tiberi [OH-12] to urge Congress to: • Support the extension of 179D – the Energy Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction which expired at the end of 2013. This provision allows for building owners to claim a tax deduction of $1.80 sf of building to offset the initial design and construction costs associated with better building systems that reduce the total energy and power costs by 50% or more when compared with a reference building. The deduction applies to nearly all commercial, high-rise multifamily residential, health care, institutional, public, and educational facilities • Amend the Design-Build Efficiency and Jobs Acts (HR2750) to require agencies to shortlist no more than five teams for federal design-build projects unless they receive approval from the head of their agency, thus ensuring that design-build competitions prove more opportunities for shortlisted teams to win. • Pass the National Design Services Act, legislation drafted by the AIA, that would enable architecture students and recent graduates to work with non-profit community design centers for a set period of time in exchange for student debt relief. The bill would revitalize underserved communities while relieving the financial burdens on the next generation of architects.

8

Above: The Council of Architecture Component Executives Member Service Resources Task Force at the CACE Annual Meeting The conference was presided over by AIA First Vice President Elizabeth Chu Richter, FAIA, and AIA President Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA, and included keynote addresses from Judy Woodruff, co-anchor and senior correspondent of PBS NewsHour, and Roy Spence, co-founder and Chairman, GSD&M and co-foundation and CEO of The Purpose Institute.

Below: Monica Wangler, AIA, Jonathan Barnes, AIA, and Gwen Berlekamp, CAE, visiting the office of Congressman Pat Tiberi, [OH-12]

While the conference itself is important, the opportunity for peer to peer connections and networking with colleagues from around the country is equally significant. Grassroots is an exceptional forum to help component officers and aspiring leaders become effective chapter and civic leaders.

Chapter Meetings Architecture’s Role in Viable, Healthy Communities

What role does architecture play in creating viable, healthy communities? We asked this question to three community advocates who presented their experiences when it comes to giving back, working for social change, and collaborating with the non-profit community.

FitCity: Columbus

From the design of healthcare facilities to initiating public health policy changes, architects play a key role in encouraging people to burn calories through the creation of quality spaces and engaging environments. Rick Bell, FAIA, and executive director with AIA New York City, and our own Peter Bardwell, FAIA, and past chair of the AIA’s Academy of Architecture Health Knowledge Community, presented the Active Design Guidelines and the role architecture and urban design plays in tackling chronic illness.

The Evolution of Practice: Computational Thinking in the Design Studio

The real impact of data-driven design methodologies may actually be found far beneath the surface of today’s best buildings. Forward-looking design firms are applying advanced computational design techniques to address questions of performance at all scales. Nick Desbians, AIA, architect and design computation specialist in the Columbus office of NBBJ presented.

Weight of Architecture Design Service Grant In 2014, the Emerging Professionals started a year-long design service grant project called the Weight of Architecture (WOA). “WOA was intended to provide design assistance to 501(c)(3) non-profits that could benefit from the services of skilled architects and designers and that would not otherwise have the resources to retain such services,” said Stephanie Hayward, AIA, and WOA project manager. The project began with selecting four non-profit organizations around Columbus that could benefit from design assistance. Along with volunteering at the organizations, on August 23rd the EPs held a charrette to come up with creative ways these organizations could benefit from their services. “The program was designed to instill leadership talent in a young group of architects, giving them the opportunity to make new connections and gain valuable experience in finding projects and delivering solutions as design professionals,” said Jonathan Barnes, AIA Columbus 2014 President. In addition, the project was intended to establish a dialogue with and build connections between the nonprofit community and the local architectural profession in Columbus,” he said. The teams presented their final WOA results at AIA Columbus’ annual meeting in October. Organizations now have proposals to provide to their respective boards and to use in fund-raising campaigns. Support for the Weight of Architecture project was provided through generous grants from AIA Ohio and the AIA College of Fellows.

The four non-profits awarded service grants were: Wild Goose Creative, which facilitates the creation of art across multiple mediums by providing resources and experiences for the central Ohio creative community in a versatile 1,320-square-foot space. This home for all arts groups currently hosts such events as improv performances, knitting gatherings and poetry readings. The Dick and Jane Project, which empowers middle-school students through songwriting workshops, where students are partnered with professional musicians and producers to write and record music that is then professionally recorded and performed on the radio.

SID Public Services Association, which manages two special improvement districts in Downtown Columbus consisting of 700 property owners on 514 acres and is planning on developing a retail alley at Pearl and Lynn Alleys. Homeport, which is an affordable housing organization that works to build vibrant communities, such as Emerald Glen in southwest Columbus. Emerald Glen’s community center serves residents by providing after-school programs, summer camps, event space, community engagement opportunities, a computer lab and a feeding program. The final boards were displayed at the annual meeting and can be found on the AIA Columbus website, aiacolumbus.org.
