E M B R A C I N G OPPORTUNITIES

Lifelong Learning With over 100 learning unit opportunities in 2015, the impressive collection of lectures, roundtable events, activities, and tours provides members with options to learn about what interests them. AIA Columbus appreciates all the hard work that our Knowledge Community volunteers do to bring a variety of high-quality programming to Columbus. Here are just a few highlights of the year.

MASTERING THE BUSINESS OF ARCHITECTURE

New in 2015, the Professional Practice Knowledge Community created an important new series, Mastering the Business of Architecture. These seminars provide in-depth exposure, resources, and education on claim prevention, business management, and many other topics.

CHAPTER MEETINGS

2015 Chapter Meetings brought members local, state, and regional content that focused on sustainability, harvesting the next generation of leadership, branding a firm, and innovation trends.

TOURS

Building site tours continue to be some of the most favored events and provide unique opportunities to get behind the scenes of Columbus’ newest projects. 2015 tours included two healthcare buildings: OhioHealth Neuroscience Center and OhioHealth Pickerington Medical Campus, along with the Columbus Museum of Art addition and renovation, an OSU campus tour, and an Italian Village development tour. 5 | AIA Columbus

E M B R A C I N G OPPORTUNITIES

Career Development and Advancement Pipeline development continues to be a dedicated focus for AIA Columbus and the architecture profession. Each summer the Center for Architecture and Design holds a creative camp for kids and high-schoolers to engage them in architecture at a young age.

CONNECTING WITH STUDENTS

The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture and AIAS continue to be our biggest partners for enhancing the relationship between professionals and students. By participating in portfolio reviews, mentoring mixers, career fairs, and offering free student admission to every AIA Columbus event, students have opportunities to get involved with the profession prior to graduating.

SCHOLARSHIP

With money raised from the Golf Outing, AIA Columbus provides a full scholarship to a graduate student at the Knowlton School of Architecture each year. This year’s recipient of the AIA Columbus Office Associateship Scholarship was Sriram Ramakrishnan. (Top Right Photo)

ARCHITECT REGISTRATION EXAMINATION (ARE) The ARE study sessions continued from 2014 into spring of 2015. With all the changes to NCARB, this year we invited the Ohio Architects Board to discuss the changes with IDP hours and suggested strategies for preparing for ARE 5.0. During this stage of development, AIA Columbus encourages associates to stay aware of AREs and keep motivated by offering a weekly ARE quiz text resource so members can receive sample questions on their phones that are related to ARE exams they are studying to pass.

ASSOCIATES

Many of the associate members are engaged with the Emerging Professionals Committee, are becoming involved in the profession, and are studying to pass the AREs. The Emerging Professionals had another big year in 2015 by producing a public awareness video, Speak Up Columbus!, and helping to create joint association happy hours with other design professionals around Columbus, along with a happy hour with the Fellows at the Ohio Valley Region Convention.

FELLOWS

AIA Fellowship is the highest honor an architect member can receive. It is bestowed by one’s peers in recognition of the architect’s significant contribution to architecture and to society, and on those who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. The Fellows mentor architects to become prepared for submitting for Fellowship. Year in Review | 8

E M B R A C I N G OPPORTUNITIES

Leadership Opportunities Committee membership and leadership is a great way to get involved in the Chapter and to meet fellow design industry professionals who share your interests.

COMMITTEE ON DESIGN

The Committee on Design aims to identify, promote, and celebrate the art of building design through strategic engagement. They strive to bring to light potentials of contemporary methodologies, techniques, and practices for our profession. This committee also champions the Architecture Awards each year.

COMMITTEE ON THE ENVIRONMENT

The Committee on the Environment promotes a sustainable environment by creating educational resources. This year the committee created a 10 seminar series, COTEducation, to inform and educate members on current topics in sustainability.

HEALTHCARE COMMITTEE

The Healthcare Committee establishes a more visible and recognized regional presence for healthcare designers and to provide educational and networking opportunities. The committee hosts building tours, lectures, seminars and round-table discussions.

9 | AIA Columbus

EMERGING PROFESSIONALS COMMITTEE

The Emerging Professionals Committee engages associate members and architects within their first ten years of licensure through programs and activities that encourage membership, participation, and leadership in the Chapter. This year the EPs published a public awareness video, Speak Up Columbus!

TECHNOLOGY IN ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE

The Technology in Architectural Practice Committee monitors the development of computer technology and the impact it has on practice, the building life cycle, design, construction, facility management, etc. They host workshops and round-table discussions to be a resource for members.

GOLF OUTING COMMITTEE

The Golf Committee promotes interaction between the architectural profession, allied professionals, engineers, contractors, material suppliers, etc. The money raised through sponsorship of the Golf Outing supports the AIA Columbus Associateship Scholarship for a graduate student at the Knowlton School of Architecture.

COLLEGE OF FELLOWS

The AIA Fellows seek to stimulate a sharing of interests among Fellows, promote the purposes of the Institute, advance the profession of architecture, mentor young architects, and be of ever-increasing service to society.

E M B R A C I N G OPPORTUNITIES

Advance the Profession Leaders must have the ability to influence others to achieve certain goals, and they can only accomplish this by applying their own leadership attributes – expertise, values, knowledge and ideas. By taking action at the federal, state and local levels, AIA members continue to work to advance the quality of life through design. From designing the next generation of energy-saving buildings to making communities healthier and more vibrant, from helping neighborhoods rebuild after disasters to exporting American design know-how to the rest of the world, AIA members continue to serve as the voice of the profession to decision-makers at all levels of government and as catalysts in communities across the country.

HEAD JUROR Robert Gurney, FAIA Robert M. Gurney, FAIA Architect Washington D.C.

Promote & Recognize Excellence in Design AIA Columbus recognizes excellence in local architecture through its annual Architecture Awards Program. The program recognizes achievements for a broad range of architectural activity in order to elevate, to establish, to inform and to honor the general quality of architectural practice, to establish a standard of excellence against which all architects can measure performance, to inform the public of the breadth and value of architectural practice, and to honor the architects, clients and consultants who work together to improve the built environment. Since its inception in 1975, the AIA Columbus Architecture Awards have recognized more than 250 projects. The 2015 awards were juried by esteemed architects from Washington D.C., led by lead juror Robert Gurney, FAIA. Projects range over a broad spectrum of architectural disciplines, from contemporary design to historic preservation, sustainable design, interiors and even to “un-built” projects. The projects displayed here are the recipients of the AIA Columbus 2015 Architecture Awards. The awards are a testament to collaboration – to teams of architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects, interior designers, and contractors, as well as a testament to our clients who place great trust in architects to realize their vision.

B U I L D I N G CONNECTIONS

Connecting with the Community During the past year, The Center continued to connect with the public, city youth, and Columbus’ design community through creative programming and collaborations with other design-related organizations.

CAMP ARCHITECTURE

Camp Architecture continued to expand in 2015. Camp Architecture is a summer camp for central Ohio youth ages 8-18, which introduces them to the world of architecture and design through hands-on activities, field trips, walking tours, presentations by professionals and imaginative games. Due to the high interest and success of this program, the camp was expanded to two full weeks and also moved to the Knowlton School of Architecture on the Ohio State University campus to accommodate the full camp.

DESIGN TALKS

Design Talks are hour long panel discussions on a variety of topics focused around architecture and design in and around Columbus. The 2015 talks were centered around LEED in Columbus, how urban farming will change our city, the future of brewpub design, educating future designers, and the AIA Columbus architecture awards winners.

INITIATIVES

In 2015 the Center started Juxtapose, an initiative seeking to spur conversations about how people see the designed world around them. By finding well-designed objects, spaces, or media, people were able to compare something similar that they believe could be better designed. 23 | AIA Columbus

SPEAK UP COLUMBUS This year the Emerging Professionals Committee produced a video titled, “Speak Up Columbus!”, in order to bring the AIA National #ILookUp campaign to the local level. The national campaign inspired our local EPs to develop this new initiative which is intended not only to promote public awareness and appreciation of architecture here in Columbus, but also to connect actively with the public by asking their opinions and listening to different perspectives on architecture and how buildings impact their daily lives. The Emerging Professionals chose four buildings around Columbus where they interviewed the architect of the building to get some contextual information and ask questions about the building before turning it around and having the architect ask the public their thoughts about the buildings. We have received candid reactions and opinions from the public through video interviews without interviewees realizing they were speaking to the architect. The architects were then able to inform the public about elements of the design. It is our hope that Speak Up Columbus! is just the beginning of a renewed appreciation and awareness of architecture in Columbus and will help encourage the public to recognize their surroundings and encourage architects to speak up about architecture and design. The AIA Emerging Professionals have started the conversation in our city now let’s continue it with the community! The video can be viewed at www.aiacolumbus.org. Year in Review | 28
