AIESEC UK
Annual Report 2013.14
PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD The Big Questions: What is AIESEC? What does AIESEC give to the world? What is a 21st century leader? According to the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Outlook 2013, there are 6 global issues to address urgently: The effects of Globalisation and its influence on income inequality, employment, technology and global governance; The prospects of Continued Economic Growth given the uncertain and unsustainable economic & financial environments; The dynamics and potential future threats of the world’s high-risk Geopolitical Situations; A Hyper Connected World and the increased role of technology today in our society; The complexities of the Post-2015 Global Development Agenda and how economic development and environmental sustainability can be balanced; And finally, Restoring our Value System with a focus on revisiting core values in decision making and leadership. In the current world context, why is AIESEC relevant? What does AIESEC give to the world? What is a 21st century leader? What is AIESEC? AIESEC envisions peace and fulfilment of humankind’s potential, a very noble and relevant cause in today’s global context. AIESEC is the largest youth-led organisation in the world. It provides a global platform for young people to explore and discover their leadership potential. Present in over 120 countries and territories, AIESEC engages with over 100,000 student members each year, facilitating over 25,000 exchanges globally.
Through my 4-years experience in AIESEC, I have not only learnt about myself, discovered myself and my potential, but I have also broadened my understanding of the world and its challenges, and potential solutions to it. What does AIESEC give to the world? AIESEC creates powerful networks, increased cultural awareness, and leadership development: Through an AIESEC experience, our organisation provides a powerful platform for students to create networks of purpose driven, values based individual who encourage and challenge each other for greater impact in society. AIESEC challenges geographical, political & social frontiers and enables increased cultural awareness and understanding for a better, more united world. Furthermore, AIESEC develops responsible, global leaders through offering practical, self-driven learning experiences. What is a 21st century leader? Global Responsible Leaders are, in our belief, the 21st century leaders the world needs in order to confront the global challenges we are facing. Through the experiences we provide to our student members, working with us here in the UK, going abroad through the GoGlobal programme, or working in the UK through the Global Talent programme, young people develop sets of skills, values and perspectives enabling them to realise their potential and change the world. We believe we develop 21st century leaders. These are leaders who are passionate, purpose-driven, and values-based. 21st century leaders are passionate about what they do, are driven to contribute more and learn from their experiences, and are truly
passionate about the impact they can have, the connections they make, and the stories they create within organisations like AIESEC. 21st century leaders are purpose-driven. They have a deep connection with a purpose, an ethos of an organisation or individual, and are driven by the belief that they do what they do in the service of something larger than themselves. 21st century leaders are values-based. They live experiences that challenge them as individuals, enabling them to reflect on who they are, what defines them, and shape their identities as values-based leaders. Our world needs more 21st century leaders. We need more global, responsible leaders who can solve the challenges the world faces. We believe youth leadership is the solution, and AIESEC is one of many organisations today engaging with youth globally around these issues and topics, providing them what standard education cannot. AIESEC develops responsible global leaders by providing a self-driven, practical, learning experience for Peace & Fulfilment of Humankind’s Potential. Yours faithfully,
Leo Szivo President AIESEC UK 13.14 To understand more of why we do what we do, please take 5 minutes to watch this video: Why we do what we do - AIESEC) bit.ly/whyaiesec
OUR MEMBERSHIP: JOIN2LEAD
AIESEC UK’s Join2Lead programme invites students at universities across the UK to develop themselves by jumping in to a hands-on, team-based experience. Alongside formal university education, Join2Lead provides an informal education comprised of both an outer journey of practical challenges and an inner journey of reflective learning. In each of our 22 local teams, students from diverse backgrounds work together to manage our international exchange programme, enhancing their own leadership skills in the process. Within the past year, AIESEC UK has initiated a process of further differentiation in our member programmes. This has created four streams of membership aimed at different groups of students with distinct interests and needs - an arrangement we hope to build upon in future years. The streams are:
BUSINESS Aimed at entrepreneurial students of management, business, and other studies, this stream offers real-world experience running a large international organisation.
TECH
SOCIAL IMPACT Aimed at proactive, globallyminded students of social disciplines, this stream offers cross-cultural understanding and practical experience in creating (administrating?) Social change.
YOUTH VOICE
Aimed at innovative students of technology, informatics, and computer and software engineering, this stream offers a chance to develop soft skills and build a network.
Aimed at passionate students of politics, economics, and humanities, this stream offers development of professional communication skills and a connection with like-minded youth.
At a time when nearly one in every five young people in the UK is unemployed, AIESEC UK aims to tackle youth under- and unemployment head on. Through the Join2Lead programme, students can gain real-world experience in NGO administration and develop key skills for employability. The programme is also opened to all students regardless of background, promoting enhanced social mobility in the UK for future generations.
AIESEC UK is thrilled to open a new collaboration with EhrmVision in 2014-2015. We are hopeful that the scientifically-developed, industry-tested TMA Method of talent management will allow us to better support development of our members, while giving those members a more concrete output of their AIESEC experience to pass on to employers.
OUR KEY ACHIEVEMENTS • Over 11,000 students signed up to learn more from our Join to Lead programme. • Over 2000 students applied to join our local committees around the UK • More than 200 members stood for leadership positions of the next term, 2014-2015. • Opened 5 new local entities, providing leadership opportunities to over 75 new students. • Over 1,000 delegates total attending our 3 national conferences and 16 seminars run this year.
In 2013-2014, the Join2Lead programme saw over 500 hours of specialised leadership training delivered to our membership and over 200 team leadership opportunities taken on. This is leadership development at its most experiential!
In 2013-2014, AIESEC UK has seen overwhelming interest from students and faculty alike interested in bringing AIESEC programmes to their universities. We have been honoured to work with six teams of dedicated students during this year to open new opportunities at: • Durham University • De Montfort University
• The University of East Anglia • Queen Mary University of London
• The University of Liverpool • University of South Wales
Adding to the 6 universities above, AIESEC in the United Kingdom is represented by students from the following universities: Aston University University of Birmingham University of Bristol University of Cambridge Cardiff University City University London University of Leeds
University of Edinburgh London School of Economics University of Manchester Newcastle University University of Nottingham University of Oxford University of Reading
University of Sheffield University of Southampton University of Strathclyde University of Glasgow University College London School of Oriental and African Studies University of Warwick
BRITISH EU OTHER
During this year, AIESEC UK’s members came from a wide variety of backgrounds and more than 80 nationalities. Within our membership, 27% were British, 20% came from elsewhere in the EU, and 52% held a non-EU nationality. This incredible diversity ensured that each and every participant on the Join2Lead programme gained a global perspective through working in one or more multicultural teams.
Additionally, each local team took responsibility for the effective running of a local NGO, with revenue of tens of thousands of pounds each year. In this way, Join2Lead developed responsible, global leaders for the future.
GOGLOBAL PROGRAMME
With a network of 124 countries and over 20,000 international internships each year, AIESEC offers more than an international experience. AIESEC offers the most intense learning experience by living and working in a foreign country, nurturing passions fighting fears. This year AIESEC UK has opened up opportunities for young people studying in the UK to challenge themselves, develop their skills, see the world and generate impact by focussing on quality and relevant experiences in all of our GoGlobal Programmes. The GoGlobal Programme comprises of GoGlobal Volunteer and GoGlobal to Kickstart your career. Volunteer Globally recognised as the: Global Community Development Programme - Development experiences working and helping NGOs and charities. KickStart your Career Globally recognised as the: Global Internship Program - Professional, paid experiences with our business partners worldwide.
OUR KEY ACHIEVEMENTS As of May 2014: • Almost 16,000 students signed up to learn more about AIESEC • Over 3,000 students applied to GoGlobal with AIESEC • 1,300 GoGlobal applicants were assessed by our student volunteers • Over 820 students have committed to go on an AIESEC exchange • Exchanges secured this summer as of May 2014 - 513 Forecasted figures for the end of July will be over 700 experiences, which will be the highest number of international experiences provided by AIESEC UK in its history.
This year we have seen growth in the number and the capacity of our national country partnerships all around the world. By working closely with multiple international AIESEC teams, we have been able to promote and deliver relevant experiences to our students in more challenging and developing environments and economies.
Ciaran, Manchester University “The opportunity made me feel as though I could really make a difference somewhere in the world as part of AIESEC. The whole experience seems much more fun and beneficial I had initially thought” Eric, UCL University “The experience really gave me a chance to see how different cultures work. Because of these differences, you get to have a good look at who you are, what your strengths and what your weaknesses are. Furthermore, getting to meet local AIESEC members during my exchange gave me a chance to understand the culture and lifestyle there. Without them, I would have always been more of a foreigner not knowing how to integrate” Tim. SOAS University “I feel I have reconfirmed much that I already believed in but also became more open minded about other aspects of the world.”
We would like to thank the help and assistance of the following national committees: Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Kenya, Egypt and Italy.
These partnerships will be supported further by 9 brilliant members who will partake in the CEED program this summer. The CEED (Cultural Envoy for Exchange Development) Programme is a position available for members to work for AIESEC (in a variety of job roles relating to core AIESEC activities) in one of the countries of our network. This year they will be sent to one of the 7 partner countries we have in order to strengthen our relationship with them. They will undertake responsibilities in that AIESEC national entity and mainly support the delivery and servicing of AIESEC UK exchange participants whilst abroad. With 40% of our Exchange participants learning about our programs through Word of Mouth, creating quality experiences is essential to the growth and sustainability of the project and organisation at large. With new and improved systems and operations, the whole network has proved diligent when completing this promise to our customers and members and enhancing the quality servicing and locally led delivery
SPECIAL THANKS All the volunteers in our OutGoing Exchange membership, the 25 Vice Presidents who lead and managed local operations along with Frankie, Janine and Caroline who nationally supported all of the local committees deserve a special thanks for their tireless efforts and achievement. As without them the organisation would not be here at all, we owe a tremendous amount to each every one of them.
GLOBAL TALENT PROGRAMME
AIESEC UK has continued to facilitate youth mobility through the Global Talent Programme. Faced with significant youth unemployment across the globe, the ever increasing growth of emerging economies and a global misalignment of skills, the Global Talent Programme has a renewed relevance in society today. The renewed relevance of the programme is in facilitating youth mobility, enabling companies to access new opportunities all over the world and developing young peoples’ skills for the future. By going back to our essence and thinking differently about the possibilities and relevance of Global Talent, we have reversed a declining trend of the programme. Our local chapters have more than doubled the number of young people coming to the UK on professional traineeship from the previous year. The number of local partners who are taking on multiple trainees has also increased and we have seen success in local committees who had not received a trainee for several years. We have trainees working for start-ups, SMEs and Multinationals across the UK in various major cities. This year we have also seen an increase in co-operation with National and Global Exchange Partners. Our multinational partners continue to find value in the AIESEC programmes and rely on us to deliver upon their diverse talent needs. Our partnerships with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Tata Consultancy Services, EF Education First have increased this year and DP DHL took on their first trainee in the UK for several years.
Morgan Stanley case study: “I think there is a certain kind of person who does this sort of internship. A few of them [Morgan Stanley interns] were past AIESEC members, and had benefited from the extracurricular side at University. They were keen to get ahead, had a strong interest in business and finance.” Frazer Campbell Private Wealth Management, Morgan Stanley “I found it fascinating the way I was able to become a key player in a major, high visibility project. It was a fantastic insight into the demands and needs of an international organisation such as Morgan Stanley.” Ricardo Ortiz Ramirez Morgan Stanley Intern, originally from Brazil
OUR KEY ACHIEVEMENTS: It is forecasted that 50 students and recent graduates will have the opportunity to experience a professional placement in the UK with our local, national and global partners. The local committees will be responsible for enabling 17 young people to experience this lifechanging opportunity. We would like to give special commendations to the following local committees for their passion, belief and performance in incoming exchange sales and partnership management: London UCL-SOAS, Strathclyde, Edinburgh, Aston, City University, Manchester, LSE, Reading, Sheffield and Warwick.
SPECIAL THANKS: AIESEC UK has welcomed students and recent graduates from all around the globe to the UK, from Brazil to the Ukraine, Vietnam to Germany and Egypt to Canada. These trainees have brought a diverse array of skills, language capabilities and perspectives to UK companies which has in turn provided them with a competitive edge.
ACCESS DOMESTIC TALENT
Access a pre-selected group of highly motivated, highly engaged students from 24 of the top 35 universities in the UK. Each year AIESEC UK receives interest from over 10,000 students to become committee members within our 20+ local committees in the UK. Those students are then whittled down through an application process until we have the 1,000 highest potential students on campus representing and volunteering for the organisation Those students then commit to an intense self-driven, practical learning experience which normally lasts the duration of their university time and delivers them career readiness in a way we and our partners just don’t find in the general student population. We also have a following of over 65,000 affiliate members in the UK who constantly engage with us for career enhancement and personal development opportunities.
HOW TO ENGAGE We offer our partner organisations a number of ways to engage with our high quality domestic graduate talent. 1. CONFERENCES over 30,000 training hours delivered annually 2. Back in 2011, AIESEC UK set a 2015 mid-term ambition:
“Our entrepreneurial membership and diversified exchange programme give us national recognition across sectors for providing future global leaders. Our accessible and empowering opportunities make us the first choice for leadership development at educational institutions. Our financial and internal governance structure drives pioneering change, organizational performance and rapid, sustainable growth, making AIESEC UK a key contributor to the global plenary. ” The last few years have shown incredible steps towards this vision: AIESEC was awarded for “Enabling Youth Mobility” by the European Parliament in November 2012, AIESEC UK was awarded the “Youth Onboard Award for Inspiring Projects” by the British Youth Council and AIESEC UK was awarded the PWC “Financial Sustainability Award” in 2013.
The 2014‐2015 National Team will be key to delivering the 2015 ambition and will capitalise on the opportunity to deliver diversified international experiences to both UK & international students and graduates. AIESEC has much to offer the UK student base or recent graduates through its Global Internship Programme alongside the established Go Global volunteering Programme. Our incoming Global Talent Programme will further to seek to establish itself by filling the IT skills gap and providing international marketing talent for companies companies to expand internationally. The future term will also be the opportunity to increase our brand awareness and increase the relevance of our programmes to ensure that AIESEC UK:

Balance
Over the past few years, AIESEC UK has experienced major shifts both internally and externally. Externally, corporate support has become more challenging to find; internally, our product portfolio has been evolving very quickly. This year, we have successfully capitalised on market trends for improved brand positioning among students for our GoGlobal Programme, and we have heavily invested in training our membership to deliver our re-branded Global Talent Programme. In maintaining a sustainable level of operational costs, AIESEC UK is truly using its resources and knowledge of external trends to ensure that the exchange programme remains a strong revenue stream and is delivered with quality - our main focus as an organisation.
Financial sustainability was a major focus of both the Board of Directors/ Trustees and the national team over the past two years. It is therefore excellent news for us to have secured another financially sustainable year. Among other things, this enables AIESEC UK to invest more in its human resources for the next year, adding three additional people on the national team for 14.15. It is very important for us to recognise the astonishing work of our Local Committees - their presidents, their leadership teams, and their members - for all their hard work and commitment in delivering excellent sales, marketing and servicing to our customers around the United Kingdom.
