Un’immagine riassume Tommaso Paradiso: “Un cowboy, un vaccaro che invece di cavalcare nel Wyoming, cavalca fra le stelle del cielo”. È come lui si vede. Ce l’ha raccontato proprio Tommaso per dare un senso al titolo del suo primo album da solista, un lavoro lungamente atteso e meditato, ‘Space Cowboy’. Dopo l’addio alla band della giovinezza, i The Giornalisti, quella con la quale ha azzeccato hit e mietuto successi come ‘Riccione’, ‘Felicità puttana’, ‘Questa nostra stupida canzone d’amore’, Paradiso ha firmato il suo primo lavoro in solitaria e in solitaria gira i palazzetti d’Italia con il ‘Sulle Nuvole Tour’. Si può dire che quel sogno di ragazzino che, in platea, davanti a Liam e Noel Gallagher, si disse “Io voglio fare questa cosa nella vita”, si sia avverato. La pandemia mondiale ha stoppato più volte l’uscita di ‘Space Cowboy’ e ha costretto il cantautore romano a stare lontano dal suo pubblico, “La musica, senza pubblico, è una non musica”, ci ha detto durante la nostra intervista. Sarà anche per questo che alla data di rientro sul palco, la riunione di una manciata di fan invitati per un concerto intimo, a gennaio 2022, al Fabrique di Milano, Tommaso Paradiso è apparso emozionato, tenero e fuori di sé dalla felicità: “Mi sono fatto trasportare dalle canzoni – ha confermato – mi sono lasciato andare e non mi sono vergognato di quello che sentivo”. Tre anni lontano dai palchi, soprattutto se si pensa ai 40mila spettatori del Circo Massimo di Roma durante il concerto di settembre 2019, sono tanti, ma sono serviti: “Lo stop mi ha fatto sedere sul divano e riflettere – ci ha detto Tommaso. A pensarci bene, dal 2009, diciamo dall’uscita di ‘Vol. 1’ non mi ero più fermato. È stata un’epopea, come il ritorno di Ulisse a Itaca, mai fermo un secondo, mai avuto un attimo per sedermi, stare a letto e dirmi ‘vedi che ho fatto, ho sbagliato qualcosa?’. Non ho pensato a nulla, per anni”. Un successo vissuto tutto d’un fiato, dunque, ma arrivato piano piano: “Con il gruppo ci siamo divertiti tantissimo, eravamo dei ragazzini. Abbiamo fatto cose inenarrabili, una gavetta violenta e pura, per anni ci siamo esibiti in pizzerie, localetti con due persone davanti, eravamo ingenui e nulla ci abbatteva, per 10 anni abbiamo fatto le stesse battute, siamo stati veramente una bella famiglia”, ci ha raccontato con la voce sincera, a scacciare i toni aspri che erano seguiti, nel 2019, alla rottura con

Tommaso Paradiso can be summed up by a

single image: “A cowboy, not riding on horseback in Wyoming but among the stars in the sky.” That is how he sees himself. And it was Tommaso who told us to convey the meaning behind the title of his first solo album, the long awaited and mused-over ‘Space Cowboy’. After saying goodbye to the band of his youth – Thegiornalisti – with whom he was successful and had hits such as ‘Riccione’, ‘Felicità puttana’ and ‘Questa nostra stupida canzone d’amore’ – Paradiso has created his first solo work and on his own is taking his ‘Sulle Nuvole Tour’ around Italy’s mini-stadiums. You could say that his boyhood dream, when he found himself in the audience watching Liam and Noel Gallagher and saying to himself “That is what I want to do in life”, has come true. The global pandemic kept halting the release of ‘Space Cowboy’ and forced the Rome singer-songwriter to be away from his audience “Music without an audience is non-music”, he said during our interview. This may explain why Tommaso Paradiso appeared emotional, endearing and beside himself with joy when he returned to the stage in front of a handful of fans, invited to an intimate concert at the Fabrique in Milan in January 2022: “I allowed myself to be carried away by the songs – he confirmed – letting myself go. I’m not ashamed of how I felt.” Three years away from the stage is a long time, especially when you remember the 40,000 spectators at the Circo Massimo in Rome for the September 2019 concert, but they served a purpose: “The break forced me to sit on the sofa and reflect – Tommaso told us. Per questo nuovo album Paradiso non ha grandi aspettative come è sempre stato, “Ci sono dischi che vanno meglio e dischi che vanno peggio, l’importante è essere onesti e dare quello che sei, non quello che a tavolino si pensa possa avere successo”. Anche questo primo disco da solista contiene ballad e brani malinconici come ‘La stagione del cancro e del leone’: “La malinconia è sicuramente un sentimento con il segno più davanti. Scuote, turba, ma non abbatte. È una luce opaca e lontana in mezzo al buio della notte. È quasi dolce, se degenera diventa tristezza profonda, una sorta di depressione, ma in sé vive ancora di sensazioni positive, con una piccola velatura di tristezza però”. Il 2022 si preannuncia un anno ricco di novità per Paradiso, è infatti in standby da un po’ anche il suo debutto da regista. Protagonista del film, nel ruolo di un musicista dal passato glorioso, ma in un momento difficile della carriera, c’è Marco Cocci, un nome che immediatamente si accosta a ‘Ovosodo’, pellicola che ha formato una generazione. “Sì, credo che quest’anno sarà l’anno dell’uscita”, ci ha confermato il cantautore romano, d’altra parte non sarà un caso che titolo della tournée e titolo del film coincidano: “Sulle Nuvole”. second and never having time to sit down or lie in bed and tell myself ‘see what I was at, did I do something wrong?’ I didn’t think about anything for years.” Success arrived all in a rush although it had taken its time coming: “We had huge fun in the group and were just kids. We did unspeakable things and it was a raw but pure learning curve. For years we performed in pizza houses and small venues with audiences of maybe just two. We were naïve and nothing phased us. For 10 years we told the same jokes, we really were a big family”, he said, sounding honest and warding off the harsh tones of 2019 following his breakup with Marco Primavera and Marco Antonio Musella, the other Thegiornalisti. Paradiso has no high hopes for this new album, as he has always done, “Some records do better and some do worse. What matters is honesty and the giving of yourself, not what you think will be a hit.” This first solo disc also contains ballads and melancholic tracks such as ‘La stagione del cancro e del leone’: “Melancholy is definitely a sentiment with a plus sign in front of it. It can be upsetting and troubling but it doesn’t knock you back. It is a faint and distant light in the middle of the nocturnal darkness. It’s almost endearing. If it escalates, it becomes extreme sadness, a sort of depression but in itself it lives off positive vibes, albeit tinged with a little sorrow.” 2022 is shaping up to be a packed year for Paradiso as his debut as a film director has also been on standby for a while. The protagonist of the film, a musician with a glorious past but going through hard times in his career, is Marco Cocci, a name that immediately conjures up ‘Ovosodo’, the film that shaped a generation. “Yes, I think this will be the year of its release.” the Roman singersongwriter told us. After all, it can be no coincidence that the tour and the film have the same title: “Sulle Nuvole”.
