In the new millennium, the boulevard continued to grow at a more rapid pace, antique stile marble sculptures and colonnades project were brought from Italiy, the Summer theater were built, three colored fountains worked out.
In 1881, the governor of Batumi district, A. Smekalov had appeared an idea of creating a seaside park. This is where begins the history of Batumi Boulevard. The first project of the boulevard was developed by well-known Prussian gardeners Ressler and Reier. In 1884, Reseller died, and the successful initiative was handed over to a French nobleman, a famous garden designer Michel D’Alfonse. His contribution to the boulevard planning is so great that in historical sources, D’Alfonse is referred as “Kind genius of Batumi seaside”. The next stage of the boulevard development is associated with the gardener-decorator Iason Gordeziani, who using the knowledge gained in the Versailles Agricultural National Institute, encouraged herbal cover, expanded old and created new nurseries. In the new millennium, the boulevard continued to grow at a more rapid pace, antique stile marble sculptures and colonnades project were brought from Italiy, the Summer theater were built, three colored fountains worked out.
The history of the Batumi Boulevard includes this century-long, continuous cycle, in which all the stages
of the seaside park were enriched and gained the sacred significance. Today it is the most visited and characteristic sight of our city.
Batumi Boulevard is the main and most visited sightseeing of the city.
Georgia, distinguished by its growing tourist statistics, hosts about 8 million international visitors annually and about 2 million tourists visit Batumi, named as the Black Sea Pearl.
It is noteworthy that walking in Boulevard for an alien or Georgian citizen who is in Batumi is a ritual, without which no one leaves this beautiful seaside city. The recreation zone, which at the same time is a cultural heritage monument, for centuries, has unites the city’s guests or native inhabitants. It involves a seven-kilometer seaside promenade, 4 historic alleys, bike path, and more than 40 thousand tree-plants planted at different times on the area.
Batumi Boulevard, with its historical meaning and continuous development cycle, became a visiting card of our city where everyone finds their place.
The foundation of the Batumi Boulevard is associated with the French Gardener Michael D’Alfons. In 1885 he has assigned on the post of the main gardener of Batumi and he is the one who started to develop the boulevard in the French style.
To celebrate his contribution to the development not only of the boulevard but also Batumi botanical gardens, he was often referred to as the kind genius of the Batumi seaside area.
In 2012 the bronze sculpture of Michael D’alfons was installed in the boulevard. Facing the eucalyptus planed by himself, Michael’s sculpture features a satisfied expression on his face.
The gardener, decorator, Iason Gordezian has played a key role in development of Batumi Boulevard. Under his management, new species of plants were introduced and planted. After his success, he went abroad to continue his education. In 1911 he graduated from the Versailles national institute of agriculture. He gained experience of working in gardens in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Holland. He also held a position of the gardener-decorator in the royal botanical garden in London. After returning to Georgia he brought extensive knowledge and expertise back to the country that he used in implementing number of large-scale projects. In 2012 the sculpture of Iason Gordezian was set up in Batumi Boulevard.
For over decades as the Batumi Boulevard has been growing, new sculptures and landmarks have been added.
However, the importance and the value of the colonnades have remained timeless making them one of the iconic symbols of Batumi. The local doctor Ivane Mtchedlidze is believed to bring the project from Italy in 1930 with the help of Maksim Gorki.
The construction works were supervised by the chief architect of the town Pavle Nadareishvili while the works were executed by the honorable architect in Georgia Bogdan Kirakosyan.
As the mosaic inscription on the colonnades says the construction processes were completed in 1934.
Created by the USA-based Georgian sculptor, Tamar Kvesitadze, a kinetic sculpture of Ali and Nino is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Boulevard.
7-meter constructions of a man and a woman perform a circular motions for 8-10 minutes eventually merging into each other.
The sculpture was inspired by the Azerbaijani novelist Kurban Said’s eponymous novel.
The sculpture symbolizes eternal motion, love and convergence of cultures. However, each visitor can have his/her unique emotions and associations after attending this performance.

In 1948-1949 a unique wooden building was constructed in Batumi without a single nail.
This was the summer theater hosting concerts, events and celebrations. In 1998 a devastating fire destroyed the building.
In 2013 the exact replica of Batumi Summer Theater was constructed which continues to host events.
Thanks to joint efforts of the prominent Georgian architect Giorgi Erkomaishvili and the Armenian engineers, three colorful fountains were installed in the central entrance of Batumi Boulevard in 1977 bringing vibrancy and a new splash of life to the area.
In 2007, the fountains underwent large-scale renovations as a result of which music was added to them.
Nowadays these musical fountains dancing with rhythm and surrounded by lovely wax sculptures of the boys with pipes, represent the major attraction for tourists.
The café fantasy, also known as Octopus is a truly beautiful and magnificent sample of the mosaic art preserved till nowadays in Batumi Boulevard. Designed by the Georgian painter Zurab Kapanadze, the open air café fantasy was opened in 1981 and was functioning for 37 years. Currently it is undergoing major renovation works and a reopening is expected in the near future. The cafe fantasy is one of the symbols of Batumi.
The peaceful and romantic environment characteristic to the Boulevard has been formed over the years.
Abundance of fountains definitely contributes to the creation of this mood. In 2012 the sculpture a woman on a bike was set up according to the Georgian architect, Irakli Zhvania’s project.
The sculpture is beautifully located in a fountain making it even more peculiar
A 130-meter Alphabet Tower is located in the Boulevard right in the Miracle Park. The architecture of the Alphabet Tower was inspired by the Georgian alphabet which is performed in the shape of DNA alluding to the special importance the Georgian people adhere to the Georgian Alphabet.
Two spiral lines go up to the tower carrying 33 Georgian letters 4 meters each. The Spanish architect Alberto Domingo Cabo designed the project celebrating the Georgian alphabet in a unique way.
Guests of the Alphabet Tower can enjoy breathtaking views on the Black sea from the watching platform (called Panorama bar) which also serves snacks and beverages. The building also houses a rotating restaurant offering wide range of delicious Georgian and European dishes. One turn takes 60 minutes enabling you to have 360 degree views while having your meal.
The first building of the lighthouse was built in 1863, before the Batumi Boulevard was developed. In 1882 it was redesigned according to the project of the French engineers and since then already for 155 it has been guiding the ships entering the Black sea.
The light coming from the lighthouse stretches far away for 14 sea miles. In addition, the lighthouse is located in a unique spot, where 41 degree parallels of the longitude and the latitude coincide with each other.
The lighthouse also performs the function of a hydrographic center, where weather forecasters observe weather conditions for 24/7. Being an innovative sample of the engineering of that time, the lighthouse has become one of the symbols of Batumi.
Batumi Boulevard, with its historical meaning and continuous development cycle, became a visiting card of our city where everyone finds their place.
Similar to Old Boulevard, New Boulevard houses number of tourist attractions.
One of them is the French dancing fountains attracting visitors with its hologram shows. ou can watch this beautiful show from a specially arranged platform.
The Japanese garden is set up stretching over 1020 sq.m. nearby the university building.

THE CRATER IS ON EXHIBIT IN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF BATUMI (CHAVCHAVADZE 77).
The red-figured bell-shaped crater was found in Pichvnari, it belongs to the Greek necropolis of V BC.
This form of vessel - the bell-shaped crater - is considered an innovation of the red-figure style. Researchers in the field, John Davidson Beasley, as well as John Boardman, believe that the shape of the craters of this group arose from the construction of wooden lathe vessels. The place of their production is the Athenian workshops, and the chronological range of distribution is considered between IV-V - BC.
The pine crater is similar to the early examples of bell craters, with downward-pointing rectangular rims instead of ears, although it has a disk-shaped heel, which is not characteristic of the early forms. Like other pine craters, it was found in a Greek necropolis and is associated with the Agape ritual. The fact of second-hand use of the item is obvious. It is known that in addition to the main function (diluting wine with spices), craters, like other large vessels, were also used as burial urns. Our crater must have been used as an altar-eskar at the agape held after the burial of the deceased: the holes specially made on the vessel’s wall are, of course, traces of the restoration of the damaged vessel, and as for the bottom, it must have been specially broken for the ritual sacrifice to the gods.
The central composition of the crater is a scene of Zeus and Iris. According to stylistic data, it should belong to the transitional style from strict to free (460-450 BC). Of the figures depicted on the pine tree crater, only the figure of Zeus from the main composition has completely survived. His long hair falls at the back of her head in wavy curls, which are separated from the mass of hair by a diluted hair decor.
The manner of rendering the hair is close to natural. The hair covering on the face is depicted with a single patch. The manner of conveying the eyes is important. An open eye shape is used. The eye is given in profile with anatomical accuracy.
The eye is moderately distant from the nose (in contrast to the archaic period, when it was projected away from and below the nose). The head is decorated with a simple diadem. Zeus sits on a backless chair. With his left hand, he rests on a scepter decorated with a lily-shaped (or cone-shaped) crown. Zeus holds a kantaros in his right hand. The movement of the torso is moderately restrained, the shoulder line is well defined in profile.
The clothes are presented in plain, less striking, simple lines, which is also characteristic of the transitional style. Parallel vertical lines are used to convey the folds
more or less completely, is that of Iris. Fragments of the head, wings and clothes have been preserved. Iris holds an oinochoe from which she pours wine for Zeus in Kantharos.
The wings are spread parallel on both sides. Only the profile of a standing Goddes type and the head of a kneeling man survive from the composition of the other side of the crater.
selected for burial inventory, there must have been an allusion to death, the elements of the funeral ritual, the protection of chthonic gods, etc. The Attic painted pottery with a specially selected theme found in Pichvnari is a clear example of the fact that this settlement, where the local Colchian population and the Greek settlers lived, was located in the area where Hellenic cults were practiced.
An equally pleasant place for walking is the “square of Europe”, which is decorated with singing fountains and an imposing statue of “Medea with the Golden Fleece”. It is on these lands, according to legend, Jason extracted the Golden Fleece. Batumi is famous for it and its surprisingly beautiful architectural sights.
Since January 14, 2016, Batumi Puppet and Youth Theatre has resumed its creative activities in the reconstructed building.
With supplementary floor and a summer hall added to the main structure, this historic building bears the status of the monument of cultural heritage.
The institution was involved in numerous collaborations with painters and composers. Its programs were enriched and developed year by year.
The idea to construct Colonnades in Batumi belongs to the local doctor Ivane Mchedlidze. He brought the project with him in 1933-1934 from a professional trip to Sorrento city, Italy. The project was completed under the supervision of Bogdan Kirakosyan, an architect from Batumi. This structure used to serve as a gate to the seashore which used to be closer to it than today. Years later, the shoreline receded and the sea moved back further from the construction. Despite this, colonnades remain one of Batumi’s most frequented landmarks and a popular meeting place in the city. You will meet similar colonnades at the entrance of Batumi Central Park.
If historical artefacts are things of your interest that Batumi Archaeological Museum is for you. There you can examine ancient cultural monuments that were unearthed on the territory of Adjara. In 2007, a permanent popular science exhibition was opened. It introduces visitors to the ancient history epochs. Since 1998, the joint expedition of Batumi Archaeological Museum and Oxford University Ashmolean Museum enriched the museum with new artefacts.
Niko Pirosmani, Lado Gudiashvili, Gigo Gabashvili, Davit Kakabazdze, Elene Akhvlediani, Merab Berdzenishvili, Rusudan Petviashvili – these names are only a small part of world-renowned Georgian painters whose works are presented in Adjara Museum of Arts. The museum building itself is a work of art and one of Batumi’s historical buildings on top of it all. Ajara Museum of Arts hosts personal, group and retrospective exhibitions as well as music and theatrical performances.
On the Europe Square stands the statue of Medea, princess of Colchis. Created by Davit Khmaladze, the monument symbolizes the wealth and strength of the country. According to antique mythology the youngest daughter of Aeets the legendary king of Colchis fell in love with the leader of Argonauts’ crew, Jason, and helped him to steal the golden fleece. Medea had in-depth knowledge of herbs and possessed healing gifts. As the legend has it, she could rejuvenate a person which is why Medea was perceived as a goddess and temples were dedicated to her. The term ‘Medicine’ originates from the name – Medea.
Batumi Theatre of Drama which opened its doors in 1952 (Architect I. Teplitski) was named after Ilia Chavchavadze seven years later. The first theatre performance ever staged in Batumi dates back to 1879 when Zurab Antonov’s play “Has the Uncle Married?’ was performed by amateur stage actors. The venture was initiated by Batumi Policemeister’s wife, Ketevan Zhuruli. Like in other theatres of Georgia, plays were held for charity here. Those engaged in the drama art moved from building to building but hardly ever lacked the attention of the audience.
This museum is set up in the same building where Nobel brothers’ crude oil refinery partnership ‘Batumi Kantora’ was located around a century ago.
Up to 2,000 museum exhibits depict the examples of technological innovation introduced by Nobel brothers, Rothschilds and Mantashev in Batumi, at the end of XIX and in the beginning of XX centuries.
These technological artefacts mainly represent tea, tobacco and printing development dynamics in Georgia. At that time, Nobel brothers also introduced latest technologies for oil transit in Batumi.
Khariton Akhvlediani Adjara State Museum is one of the oldest museums in Georgia. It was founded in 1908 after Batumi city council approved the initiative of then Pushkin school teachers and decided to open a museum for children. The renowned scientist and public figure, Khariton Akhvlediani served as the Head of the museum in 1938-1989. This interesting museum invites visitors to three places at once: Mehmed Abashidze museum-He was a respected persona in Georgia; Personal items, documents and photos of t. Ilia Chavchavadze, Georgia’s greatest public figure; and a science library where a rich fund of old books is represented.
Folk crafts and lifestyle museum which was created and founded by the native of upper Adjara, Kemal Turmanidze, is today the ethnographic museum which covers 3,000 m2. Once you get to the museum, you plunge into the old Georgian traditions.
Pottery, metal, stone and wood processing, beekeeping, fruit farming, viticulture and agriculture is displayed at the level of the work process.
Mannequins dressed in traditional attire, props, folk music – all this paraphernalia will animate your imagination. You can find residential, worship and agricultural buildings here too, both in the form of small models and in life-size.
Another museum worth your visit is the museum of Ilia Chavchavadze, who was one of the most distinguished sons of Georgian nation, later sanctified and declared a saint by the Georgian Orthodox Church. The writer, the publicist, the philanthropist, the public figure and the leader of Georgian national-liberation movement was shot and killed in 1907 by the opponents of the liberation of Georgia. The museum was opened in Batumi in 2001 where you can examine personal belongings of Ilia Chavchavadze and his Adjarian peers. There are 289 exhibits kept in the museum, including a table, a closet, small and big samovars (tea-kettles), a sewing machine belonging to Ilia’s wife, Olga Guramishvili and many other items.

Batumi is one of the oldest cities in Georgia founded as before the Common Era. The initial settlement “Batus” is mentioned in sources from the 4th century BCE. The city’s unique history has contributed to the city’s vast architectural diversity. In the 19th century, during the “Porto Franco” period, European architects completed a number of interesting architectural projects. Later during the soviet and post-soviet times, Batumi was developed into a popular seaport and tourist destination. To this day, Batumi is still distinguished by a variety of buildings of different architectural styles.
The Georgian Supra (a traditional feast) has no equivalent around the world. The culture of toasting does exist in many cultures; however, the Georgian “Tamada” or toastmaster has no parallel. The role of the Tamada is to lead the Supra. The Tamada is considered to be the most honorable member of a traditional Georgian Supra. The ideal Tamada is well educated, has extensive knowledge of Georgia’s history and culture, is eloquent, is sociable, has a good sense of humor and has musical ability. The Tamada should be able to lead a series of toasts on a variety of topics. He should also be able to entertain guests with poems, songs and interesting stories. The Georgian Supra is a fundamental element of Georgian identity, which is why the tradition has been preserved to this very day. In total, there are approximately 300 different toasts, some of which are obligatory for each Supra, regardless of its duration.
All parts of Georgia are interesting, but Ajara is place with the sea, the mountains, interesting traditions and a lot of other reasons why you should visit this region.
A traditional Georgian feast is a superb display of the diversity of Georgian cuisine, cooking techniques, tablesetting traditions and other accompanying rituals. Ajarian cuisine is an inseparable aspect of Georgian cuisine. In mountainous Ajara, dairy products are common ingredients in many dishes. Boat-shaped Ajarian khachapuri is one of the most famous Ajarian dishes. Sweets also play an important role in Ajarian cuisine. Viticulture is an essential component of Georgian and Ajarian culture that has been cultivated for hundreds of years. In total, there are around 50 different grape species in Ajara that are still used in wine production to this very day.
Georgia is one of the oldest Christian countries in the world, which has had a significant influence on Georgian culture. Gonio, one of the oldest settlements in Georgia, is located in Ajara. It was inhabited in the 8th-7th century BCE. The Gonio Fortress, which was built by the Romans, has mythic ties to the legend of Jason and the Argonauts. Ajara is famous for its stone-arch bridges and different religious monuments. The monasteries, Gelati and Bagrati recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites are located just a few hours’ drive from Batumi. Tbilisi, Mtskheta and other parts of Georgia are also very rich in unique and diverse cultural monuments. Moreover, non-material culture, such as Georgian polyphony and dances, are important parts of Georgian culture. Ajarian songs and dances occupy a special place in Georgian folklore.
Adjara is part of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis, the place where every monument hides history behind it. If you like to read the history in monuments or artefacts, then Adjara should find its spot on your list of the world’s must-see places.
Batumi is an attractive destination not only during the summer season but also in spring and autumn. Visitors can sunbathe or swim as early as the beginning of May. The sea becomes even more pleasant during September and October, given Batumi’s long Indian summers. Winters are warm and summers are hot in Batumi. In addition to the seaside, visitors can also trek to the amazing mountainous regions of Ajara.
Adjara is the place of new rendezvous where you can have fun and leisure at any time of the year. Adjara has many places to see and discover, especially when you visit for the first time. However, please keep in mind one thing - you want to come back here again.
The Miniature Park is located in Shekvetili, in the touristic-recreational zone near Tsitsinatela Amusement Park, about half an hour north of Batumi on the Black Sea coast.
Georgia’s uniqe tourist attraction has officially working where guests are invited to take a step back in time and explore dozens of the country’s most iconic buildings and sites in small scale.
The country’s first Miniature Park opened on 2017 in Shekvetili, western Georgia. Here visitors can see 44 miniature replicas of iconic buildings and architectural monuments from all over Georgia that explore the country’s rich culture and history.
At 1:25 scale, which is European standard for miniature parks, visitors will be able to tower over the displays and get a birds-eye view of sites that normally engulf them.
Among the miniature displays are several iconic churches from different regions, historic stone pillars and towers and a comprehensive display of the country’s medieval city of Sighnagi.
The Miniature Park also showcases a small-scale version of Narikala fortress in capital Tbilisi and many other historic monuments.
The Miniature Park is located in Shekvetili, in the touristic-recreational zone near Tsitsinatela Amusement Park, about half an hour north of Batumi on the Black Sea coast.
Ten million GEL (about $4.28 million/€3.84 million*) was invested in the new Miniature Park. All of this funding came via a private investment by Georgian tycoon and former Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili through the Cartu Charity Foundation.
A unique database that includes accurate drawings of prototypes of the miniatures featured at the park was also gifted to state by the Cartu Charity Foundation. The drawings were rendered in a way that was particularly valuable for the National Agency of Monument Protection.
Other infrastructure inside the Miniature Park includes a Visitors Centre with a mini amphitheater, a cafe and more.
The country’s official language is Georgian, but English is widely used. Russian is also spoken by the majority of Georgians. See below for a list of some of the most common words.

Here, Chef Elene shares her recipe for GEORGIAN BEAN DISH Lobio (Georgian: ლობიო), is a popular dish made with kidney beans and usually eaten with Mchadi and marinaded vegetables .
The Georgian word ‘lobio’ means ‘beans’. There are a number of varieties of this dish and we will show how to make one of the most popular.
Ingredients (4 servings):
400 grams of dried red kidney beans, 100 grams of onions, 50 grams of fresh green coriander (optional), 2 cloves of garlic, a pinch of dried coriander, half spoon of dried Blue Fenugreek, 3 bay leaves, 1 tsp black pepper and 70 grams of oil, 2 tsp salt.
Instructions
Soak beans in cold water for two hours prior to cooking. Drain water and add beans, bay leaves and salt to a deep pot containing 1.5 liters of water. Cook on a medium heat until the beans are tender.
Chop the fresh coriander and onions.
Add fresh and dried coriander, Blue Fenugreek, garlic, black pepper and a pinch of salt to a mortar. Grind the ingredients with a pestle. Fry the chopped onions in a pan of hot oil.
Drain the water from the cooked kidney beans but keep 200 milliliters in a separate jug to use later. Use the back of a wooden spoon to mash the beans on the side of the pot.
Add the ingredients that were crushed in a mortar, together with fried onions and the oil they were fried in. Mash all ingredients until completely mixed, add the 200 milliliters of bean water (saved when draining the beans).
Transfer the ingredients to a pot and cook on a medium heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Georgian baked in individual clay pots in the oven.
Bon appetit!
