THE ONE DRINK YOU NEED TO KNOW AND TRY, WHEN VISITING GEORGIA

Chacha is a Georgian pomace brandy, a clear and strong (ranging between 40% alcohol for commercially produce to 65% for home brew), which is sometimes called “wine vodka”, “grape vodka”, or “Georgian vodka/grappa”. It is made of grape pomace (grape residue left after making wine). The term chacha is used in Georgia to refer to grape distillate. It may be also produced from unripe or wild grapes.

Georgian chacha

Nestled in the heart of the Caucasus region of Eurasia between the Black Sea and the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, Georgia has a climate that is perfect for grape cultivation. One of the world’s oldest wine producing regions, grapes are thought to have first appeared in the country as far back nearly 8,000 years. Grape cultivation and wine making are therefore a significant part of Georgia’s history and culture, and continue to play a vital role in the country’s economy. It is not only a rich diversity in wine, however, that Georgia’s vineyards are famous for. Grape cultivation and wine production have also resulted in the development of “chacha” Georgia’s traditional national drink.

Chacha is made from grape skins, or pomace, leftover

from wine production. The skins are a byproduct that most modern wineries toss out, but Georgia cherishes grape skins.

The drink is everywhere in Georgia, from commercial versions in stores, to homemade chachas on dinner tables.

Where to drink chacha in Batumi: Georgia has excellent wine shops, and there are many fancy restaurants to taste artisan chacha if you’re looking for something higher end. one of the best place to drinking best quality of chacha and learning how drinking, it’s “Chacha Time” (5 Giorgi Mazniashvili St, Batumi), one of the old and popular bar in old town of Batumi.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF UNIQUE TRADITIONS!

Guests of our city, we would like to invite you to visit the museum named after Khariton Akhvlediani of Adjara, to introduce you to the diverse traditions of the most beautiful part of Georgia, namely Ajara. The museum exhibits unique local wedding traditions and importance of local customs and characteristics of the wedding ritual.

Georgia is a country of centuries-old history, beautiful culture and ancient traditions. During the long historical development, the Georgian people have developed their own way of life, created rich traditions, customs, holidays and left them as a legacy for generations. A diverse wedding tradition has been formed in Georgia since ancient times. These traditions are characterized by certain peculiarities in each corner, but mostly the rules are the same. Wedding is the most important day in every person’s life. Georgians, as one of the oldest nations, have created appropriate wedding rituals and customs. The Georgian wedding ceremony included several steps: search-deal; promotion or engagement; Engagement with the bride, wedding and taking the bride to new home.

Particularly interesting are the diverse traditions of Ajarian marriage, which are identical to marriages in other parts of Georgia: parental negotiation, dowry, betrothal, wedding ceremony and others. Despite

the most difficult historical conditions, Ajara sacredly preserved the wedding customs and related folklore. The tradition of search-dealing has been established since ancient times. This was a direct process of mutual approval of men and women. At the same time, there was a deal when a matchmaker married young people who were sometimes completely unknown and had never seen each other. The matchmaker informed the parents of the man and woman about each other’s property status, origin, race, and the amount of the woman’s dowry. The tradition of appointment in the cradle was spread throughout Georgia. Parents who were friendly towards each other, with the desire to be relatives, also appointed already grown children. This tradition sometimes created a basis for a conflictfree marriage, but it was also an excuse for bloodshed and personal conflicts. Marriage was a public act of economic importance. According to ethnographic literature, the cult

of hearth was considered to unite the family. The hearth was a symbol of eternal fire. Before the establishment of the Christian crucifixion, the Nephew-Queen was carried around the hearth and the crown was blessed in the son’s house and in the woman’s house. The ceremony originated from pagan times and was performed with singing. One of the important details of the Georgian wedding ritual was the throwing of wheat grains on the heads of the newlyweds and the insertion of a small boy for the bride. Also, one of the interesting moments of the wedding ceremony was the ritual crying of the bride near her native home. Kidnapping of women as a form of marriage was quite common in Georgia. In the 9th and 10th centuries, the establishment of a marriage union

was already done through the negotiation of parents, but the abduction persisted for a very long time. Apart from trade and abduction, families were rarely but still formed. The so-called “sitting” custom, if a woman

AJARA Life Magazine 52

liked a boy, she would sneak out of the house and walk to the boy’s family. The boy had the right to take it back, although it was considered a great shame.

The ritual of preparation of dowry is important in marriage customs. There was a special “dowry book” - on the day of the wedding, at the end of Lekhini, it was necessary to read the “dowry book” aloud. Public announcement of dowry was a rule in Georgia in ancient times. In this regard, many things have changed in Georgia. Both parties are preparing for the wedding.

In the days before the wedding, the son sent the woman a “sign-bogcha”, which included elements of valuable clothes and silver and gold jewelry: a gold ring, a silver necklace, a brooch, “jigjigha”, “cordom”, “silver belt” and other valuables. jewelry. The quality and quantity of the sign depended on the son’s family’s ability. After that, the “Aghdi” - act of consent was concluded, where it is mentioned how much gold a woman and the important rights of women’s protec-

tion were valued. Then soon the wedding day is decided. Necessary attributes of the wedding ceremony were humor, laughter, dance-games, Georgian table, tamada, Georgian toasts and so on.

“Makruli” deserves special attention among wedding songs. The role of the evangelist is important among the believers. He first cheers the bride’s family with the arrival of Nephi by firing a gun and roaring, and then goes to the son’s house. An evangelist needs a gift. A month after the wedding, the bride was taken out on the water, thus beginning her employment in outdoor work. With this, the woman completed her marriage and began to be the housewife of the family. The bride should have good legs and should bring happiness to the new family. The guests will entertain him with sweets. The new daughter-in-law should multiply the family.

Wedding traditions in Ajara are identical to traditions in all parts of Georgia. At different stages of historical development, most of the customs have changed over time, and some have been rethought, but even today, the original wedding customs, which are characteristic of different parts of Georgia, attract a lot of attention. The Ajara Museum presents the wedding collection of Devrish-Beg Bezhanidze’s wife Sally Shervashidze. This collection was introduced to the museum in 1967. The wedding dress is made of dark blue velvet, with a large gold border, and it is tightly embroidered with a stylized flower, which is enclosed in a circle tied with a wavy ornament. In the circle, small dots “kumbils” are embroidered with gold thread. The heart of the dress is interestingly decorated with

a Georgian plant ornament. Most of the embroidery is done with a large fixed stitch, using golden thread. In Ajara, when choosing the color of a wedding dress, preference was given to red. The use of the red cloth in the cabinet is also explained by its magical meaning. However, it did not rule out the use of other colors as well. In Georgia, men used traditional clothes called Chokha-Akhalukh during festive and wedding rituals. And in Ajara, the clothes identical to Chokhi are called “chakura”. Chakura was worn above and actually represented the top of the chokhi. Chakura’s set, in addition to the chokhi itself, included a Zubuni-two-pocket Akhalukhtype garment, pants, a talabulus belt (kubokrul), zankleb (pachichi), socks and leather shoes with lapchi. “Khonjar” was used to sew wrinkled trousers. The wedding elements of the headdress are interestingly presented: lechak, lechak-samagri tori, duvaghi and vala, fata and other various wedding elements.

We think, after reading this article, our dear guest, you will desire to visit the museum and share the historicity and diversity of Georgian traditions.

It is on these lands, according to legend, Jason extracted the Golden Fleece. Batumi is famous for it and its surprisingly beautiful architectural sights.

BATUMI, CULTURAL MONUMENTS

BATUMI PUPPET AND YOUTH PROFESSIONAL STATE THEATRE

Since January 14, 2016, Batumi Puppet and Youth Theatre has resumed its creative activities in the reconstructed building.

With supplementary floor and a summer hall added to the main structure, this historic building bears the status of the monument of cultural heritage.

The institution was involved in numerous collaborations with painters and composers. Its programs were enriched and developed year by year.

COLONNADES

The idea to construct Colonnades in Batumi belongs to the local doctor Ivane Mchedlidze. He brought the project with him in 1933-1934 from a professional trip to Sorrento city, Italy. The project was completed under the supervision of Bogdan Kirakosyan, an architect from Batumi. This structure used to serve as a gate to the seashore which used to be closer to it than today. Years later, the shoreline receded and the sea moved back further from the construction. Despite this, colonnades remain one of Batumi’s most frequented landmarks and a popular meeting place in the city. You will meet similar colonnades at the entrance of Batumi Central Park.

BATUMI ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

If historical artefacts are things of your interest that Batumi Archaeological Museum is for you. There you can examine ancient cultural monuments that were unearthed on the territory of Adjara. In 2007, a permanent popular science exhibition was opened. It introduces visitors to the ancient history epochs. Since 1998, the joint expedition of Batumi Archaeological Museum and Oxford University Ashmolean Museum enriched the museum with new artefacts.

ADJARA MUSEUM OF ARTS

Niko Pirosmani, Lado Gudiashvili, Gigo Gabashvili, Davit Kakabazdze, Elene Akhvlediani, Merab Berdzenishvili, Rusudan Petviashvili – these names are only a small part of world-renowned Georgian painters whose works are presented in Adjara Museum of Arts. The museum building itself is a work of art and one of Batumi’s historical buildings on top of it all. Ajara Museum of Arts hosts personal, group and retrospective exhibitions as well as music and theatrical performances.

BATUMI, CULTURAL MONUMENTS

THE STATUE OF MEDEA

On the Europe Square stands the statue of Medea, princess of Colchis. Created by Davit Khmaladze, the monument symbolizes the wealth and strength of the country. According to antique mythology the youngest daughter of Aeets the legendary king of Colchis fell in love with the leader of Argonauts’ crew, Jason, and helped him to steal the golden fleece. Medea had in-depth knowledge of herbs and possessed healing gifts. As the legend has it, she could rejuvenate a person which is why Medea was perceived as a goddess and temples were dedicated to her. The term ‘Medicine’ originates from the name – Medea.

BATUMI ILIA CHAVCHAVADZE STATE THEATRE OF DRAMA

Batumi Theatre of Drama which opened its doors in 1952 (Architect I. Teplitski) was named after Ilia Chavchavadze seven years later. The first theatre performance ever staged in Batumi dates back to 1879 when Zurab Antonov’s play “Has the Uncle Married?’ was performed by amateur stage actors. The venture was initiated by Batumi Policemeister’s wife, Ketevan Zhuruli. Like in other theatres of Georgia, plays were held for charity here. Those engaged in the drama art moved from building to building but hardly ever lacked the attention of the audience.

THE NOBEL BROTHERS MUSEUM

This museum is set up in the same building where Nobel brothers’ crude oil refinery partnership ‘Batumi Kantora’ was located around a century ago.

Up to 2,000 museum exhibits depict the examples of technological innovation introduced by Nobel brothers, Rothschilds and Mantashev in Batumi, at the end of XIX and in the beginning of XX centuries.

These technological artefacts mainly represent tea, tobacco and printing development dynamics in Georgia. At that time, Nobel brothers also introduced latest technologies for oil transit in Batumi.

KHARITON AKHVLEDIANI STATE MUSEUM

Khariton Akhvlediani Adjara State Museum is one of the oldest museums in Georgia. This interesting museum invites visitors to three places at once: Mehmed Abashidze museum-He was a respected persona in Georgia; Personal items, documents and photos of t. Ilia Chavchavadze, Georgia’s greatest public figure; and a science library where a rich fund of old books is represented.
