Batumi is one of the most distinguished tourist destinations on the Black Sea. Tsikhisdziri resort is located 17 km north of Batumi, 60-90 meters above sea level.

Sarpi is located 18 km south of Batumi, near the Georgia-Turkey border. Sarpi is a very popular beachside destination. The water is very clear on the resort’s coastline, and the seaside attractions there are very attractive.

The main attraction of Tsikhisdziri is its unique mixture of sea and mountain climates. Summers are rather cool and winters are relatively warm in comparison with Batumi or Makhinjauri. The territory has been settled since ancient times. It used to be a historical city-fortress in western Georgia, namely of the Egrisi Kingdom, due to its military strategic and economically favorable location. In the VI century AD, Byzantine Emperor Justinian built the city of Petra. A narrow coastal road passed through the city territory connecting western Georgian to Byzantium, Iran and Armenia. Many rest houses, restaurants and cafes are located throughout the green slopes and beautiful parks and gardens of Tsikhisdziri. The beach is comfortable and boat rentals are available.

The average water temperature is +25oC. Hotels and hotel-type cottages are located very close to the beach. Mountain and sea air make for an ideal climate and create a welcoming atmosphere. Also, vacationers can visit the Laz Ethnographic Museum and the historic Church of St. Andrew.

The average water temperature is 25oC. Hotels and hotel-type cottages are located very close to the beach. Mountain and sea air make for an ideal climate and create a welcoming atmosphere. In addition, Kvariati is home to the unique historical Gonio Fortress, which was constructed in the 1st century AD. The fortress is located near Kvariati in the village of Gonio.

Kobuleti is the closet resort to the sea in Georgia. It is distinguished by its historical sites, mild subtropical climate, ionized sea air, Pichvnari (pine forest), gentle sun and warm sea. The broad pebbly beach sloping down towards the sea is well equipped with parasols and deck chairs. In addition, different water rides are offered to holiday-makers. There are numerous cafe-bars, restaurants and bungalows in Seaside Park. The mild, humid subtropical climate encourages relaxation as well as medical treatment.

Batumi Botanical Garden is located within Green Cape’s picturesque setting. Thousands of visitors come to the garden each year due to its wide variety of flora.

Batumi Boulevard is the main and most visited sightseeing of the city. The recreation zone, which at the same time is a cultural heritage monument, for centuries, has unites the city’s guests or native inhabitants.

It involves a seven-kilometer seaside promenade, 4 historic alleys, bike path, and more than 40 thousand tree-plants planted at different times on the area. Batumi Boulevard, with its historical meaning and continuous development cycle, became a visiting card of our city where everyone finds their place.

TENNIS COURTS

An open air tennis court of European standards has been functioning in the boulevard already for years. The tennis court hosts international tournaments. Therefore, you can often watch sportsmen training. If you want to engage into some physical activities while in Batumi, we advise you to visit tennis court and try your hand at tennis being surrounded by a beautiful scenery.

In 2004 the Veteran’s club was opened in Batumi named after Nona Gaprindashvili, the world five-time champion in chess from Georgia. Throughout the city you can find 23 bike stations, majority of which are located on the territory of the boulevard. You can purchase a special so called Velo card in a tourism information center which gives you a chance to use comfortable bicycles and enjoy a beautiful ride in the boulevard.

ALLEY OF MAGNOLIAS

The first alley of the Old Boulevard is known as the Alley of Magnolias.Stretching over a kilometer and boasting Magnolias of different sizes, it is the first alley after Ninoshvili Street. For over three centuries, Magnolias have been planting on the territory of the boulevard enchanting the visitors with its mind blowing scent.

YACHT CLUB

A yacht club is located nearby a panoramic wheel. Fans of extreme activities can rent a paraglide here and enjoy stunning views of the Black sea from the above. In addition, here you can rent small cozy yachts to have a nice trip on the black sea.

ZOO CORNER

Batumi Boulevard boasts diversity of flora and fauna. A zoo corner located in the heart of the boulevard houses more than 140 species. Let us introduce you to the real star of the zoo corner, a 15-year-old pelican called Bebero (old) who is always ready to interact with guests and pose for photos. Just call his name Bebero.

ALLEY OF PALMS

In Batumi you can easily find a subtropical ever-green palm trees.The development of a dedicated palm alley in the Batumi Boulevard started in 2003 and was finalized in 2006. The palm alley stretches along the coastline for over 4.7 kilometers.

ACTIVITIES & NATURE IN BATUMI BOULEVARD TROPICAL SQUARE

On the old boulevard, near the alphabet tower, a space created with new tropical trees was arranged. The new tropical square, which is an additional attraction for the old boulevard, is cultivated on an area of 2300 sq.m., where more than 1500 roots of various types of tropical and subtropical plants have been planted. These include Strelitzia, Bamboo, Flax, Banana Trees, Dihondres, Cordylinins, Santolina, Pampas, Palma Yucca, etc. In the tropical square, it is planned to mulch plants and arrange decorative lighting in the near future.

JAPANESE GARDEN

The Japanese garden is set up stretching over 1020 sq.m. nearby the university building. The garden features a miniature lake, decorative bridge and plants typical for the Eastern culture. Finding the Japanese garden is quite easy thanks to red Japanese style entrance gates.

UKRAINIAN SQUARE

In 1970-ies the writer from Batumi Amiran Shervashidze had an idea to set up a square of prominent poets and novelists in Batumi Boulevard. With this intent, he brought the busts of Lesya Ukrainka and Taras Shevchenko from Ukraine. The busts were located nearby the colonnades leading to the creation of the Ukrainian square. Ukrainian literature’s foremost woman writer, Lesya Ukrainka had special ties with Georgia spending last years of her life here. As it is known, she also visited Batumi few times.

PINE FOREST IN BATUMI BOULEVARD

2500 pine trees grow near the coastal line in Batumi Boulevard. Pine trees are renewed annually with new seedlings, where mainly coastal and black pine varieties are planted. The pine alley plays a special health-improving role in the green space of the boulevard and is distinguished by its healing properties along with the sea and mountain climate.

KHULO CABLE CAR

ONE OF THE MAIN DESTINATIONS IS KHULO

One of the main destinations is Khulo – cozy and small town which has a beautiful location overlooking the river gorge. It’s 80km from Batumi. You will find some small hotels and restaurants in the town and the cable cars which will take you to the other slope of the river gorge, village Tago where you can sit and enjoy breathtaking views.

The cable car works from 9:00AM – 6:00PM When and from where the cable car moves during those hours depends on the number of people who want to use the cable car.

Within a three-hour drive from Batumi, in Ajarian mountains, a little village exists that will absolutely take your breath away from first sight. This tiny village connects to the outer world by the Khulo cable car, which is known to be the fastest way of transportation from Khulo to the village named Tago. This cable car is the second-longest free span cable car in Europe. This cable car is unique in its kind. The Khulo cable car was built in 1985 and has a length of 1.919 meters. The entire road, from Khulo to Tago, does not have a single intermediate pillar. With all this, the road passes at an altitude of 350 meters, over the gorge of the Adjaristskali River.

DEVELOPMENT OF TEA CULTURE IN ADJARA LAO JIN JAO

Tea culture has been firmly established in Adjara since the 900s, and most importantly, the cultivation of tea was started by the peasantry. In 1924, Lao Jin Jao was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. Adjara is considered to be the “Georgian homeland” of tea culture. Its history dates back to the 50s of the 19th century. In 1847, several bushes were imported from the Crimea. There were experiments and observations for a long time and a decision has been made to bring a tea expert from China because they could not reveal the properties of the tea growth structure. In 1883, a Russian expedition to China was held, and one of its tea merchants, Popov, stopped the choice of a 23-year-old Chinese man, the son of a traditionally noble family, Lao Nunjou (Lao Jin Jao in the Quantum dialect). His name would later become associated with the cultivation of tea in the Caucasus. He has worked for 30 years and during that time planted many tea plantations. He built a tea leaf processing factory and started making high quality drinks (tinctures) from tea leaves in Georgia. Traditionally, China is considered the country where tea has been mentioned since 11th century BC. The Chinese have long exported tea abroad,via the historical ‘silk road’ in many parts of the world. In 1893, the invitation of Lao Jin Jao, a young Chinese man, led to the establishment of a tea business. The best conditions for growing tea culture were found in Adjara. Solotsov, then Popov, who owned princely estates in the Batumi region, began to think about how to spread the tea culture in Adjara. It was impossible to get a large

quantity of quality tea, which is why it was decided to invite a tea expert from China with his family. The expedition led by Popov was commissioned in the second half of the 19th century to bring tea bushes and seeds. This expedition included Professor Tikhomirov. Plantations were planted near Chakvi, in the villages of Kapreshumi and Salibauri in 1893. That year the tea expert Lao Jin Jao arrived in Adjara at the invitation of Mr.Popov. This was followed by a new expedition to India. The total area of tea plantations in the Batumi region was 300 desetina. The activities of the Chinese Mechaites greatly interested the local peasantry. Chinese Mechais brought 12 different subtropical plants, seeds and seedlings to Chakvi. Peasants came from Guria, Samegrelo and even Abkhazia for advice on tea cultivation. Lao Jin Jao has studied the Georgian language and thus he could have a direct and close relationship with the local population. Lao Jin Jao was born in Quantur (Canton) in 1870, received the rank of captain at the age of 18, but did not continue his military service. He started working as a co-worker in one of the tea factories in Nankow Province, 5,000m away from Quantum. Here he spent 5 years. Mr. Popov arrived at this factory and became interested in growing tea in the Batumi region. Popov spent two months here and then offered Lao Jin Jao to work for the cultivation of tea in the Caucasus estates. A contract was

signed for a period of 3 years. Lao Jin Jao arrived in the Caucasus in November 1893. Within three years he had managed to make a large orchard of tea seedlings, setting up a small tea processing plant. After the signing of the contract, 10 Chinese workers returned to their homeland, while Lao Jin Jao left on a business trip and spent half a year in the homeland. He returned to Batumi with a large family: mother, wife and (mother adopted daughter), 5-year-old son and newborn daughter. He arrived in 1897 and settled in the Kapreshumi Nature Reserve. In 1897, Mr.Popov began construction of a factory similar to the Ceylon Tea Factory. Lao Jin Jao has been appointed a Chief Ruler of the Royal Estates. In 1901 he was invited to be the manager of a tea factory on the Chakvi estate. In December of the same year his mother died and he buried her in Chakvi.

In 1926, Lao Jin Jao returned to China with his family. Before leaving for his homeland, he left in the museum a souvenir of Chinese items stored in the museum funds, some of which are exhibited in a permanent exhibition. The museum also preserves Chinese items purchased and collected from various individuals. Lao’s daughter in law Nona Tushmanishvili visited our museum in the 1960s.

Chakvi and Salibauri tea factories have been producing industrial tea since 1898. Tea processing in factories was directly supervised by Lao Jin Jao. Chakvi Tea Factory produced Baikha tea, brick tea and also made tea powder.

Nona’s daughter Liu Kandareli Guanven was twice at the Adjara State Museum with relatives from China. The museum corresponded with him. She is an artist-decorator by profession, her husband Givi Kandareli is an artist, her son Irakli is an architect and lives in Tbilisi.

After 10 years of work, Lao Jin Jao was awarded the Order of Stalislav of the Third Degree. In 1911, Lao bought 10 acres of land in Chalta, near Batumi. In 1918, Lao first released tea with a personal tint. It lost many employees in connection with the start of the war in 1914. Chakvi

GEORGIA TO HOST NATIONAL CHEFS CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2023

Calling gastronomy the “biggest advantage” of the Georgian tourism sector along with its culture and biodiversity, Davitashvili noted the competitive advantage of Georgian tourism was “best felt” in this field. The Gastronomic Association of Georgia plans to host the 2023 edition of the National Chefs Championship in the country, the Georgian Economy Ministry announced on Wednesday. The Association, founded in 2018, held its presentation earlier today, with Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili calling gastronomy “one of the main directions” of tourism in reference to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s naming of the field as one of the top five most important motivations for tourists in recent years. He also elaborated on the challenges the sector faced, stressing the importance of putting in “more effort”

in the direction due to the “very high” competition worldwide. Calling gastronomy the “biggest advantage” of the Georgian tourism sector along with its culture and biodiversity, Davitashvili noted the competitive advantage of Georgian tourism was “best felt” in this field. One of the world’s oldest wine producing regions, grapes are thought to have first appeared in the country as far back nearly 8,000 years. It is not only a rich diversity in wine, however, that Georgia’s vineyards are famous for. Своей отдушиной я называю психологию чисел, в простонародье называемой нумерологией, но я в этом вижу глубину и истину, помогающую жить не только мне но и другим людям. MOUNTAINOUS AJARA

The mountainous regions of Ajara include the Keda, Khulo and Shuakhevi municipalities. Each municipality is full of rich and diverse natural beauty. The Meskheti, Arsiani and Shavsheti Ranges create a very interesting geographic relief of Ajara. Their average height is between 2000-2500 meters. Keda municipality Tourists often visit Keda to see the Makhuntseti waterfall. The nearby areas offer authentic restaurants and scenic picnic locations. The Archaristkali mountain and river gorge of Keda municipality are home to a variety of different flora and fauna, as well as other natural beauty, including a waterfall. The plants in the area are primarily deciduous and coniferous. The animal life in the area is also diverse. Additionally, the region has several mineral waters with unique medicinal qualities.

Shuakhevi municipality Shuakhevi is a typical mountainous municipality full of diverse flora and fauna. Agriculture is the main industry in Shuakhevi. The locals of Shuakhevi pride themselves on their generosity and hospitality. Visitors can get an authentic taste of village life and take part in a variety of farming activities. The area is also excellent for hiking, hunting (wild boars, hares and badgers in particular), horseback riding, rock climbing and cycling. Shuakhevi is also home to the Gomarduli ski resort. Khulo municipality Khulo - a beautiful part of the Ajaran highland - is distinguished by its rich natural beauty, cultural sites and history. Khulo is composed of mount-forest and mount-meadow soils. Deciduous and coniferous trees and plants predominate the area. The beautiful Mtsvane Tba (Green Lake) is located in Khulo municipality. Beshumi is a well-developed summer resort, and Goderdzi, Kedlebi and Danisparauli are ski resorts located within the municipality.

REVENUE FROM INTERNATIONAL TOURISM UP 45.6% IN JANUARY-APRIL 2022 Revenues from international tourism have recovered by 68.9 percent compared to the pre-pandemic 2019, said the GNTA. Georgia has received $582 million from international tourist visits between January-April, which is 463.1 percent more compared to the same period of last year, the Georgian National Tourism Administration has said. Revenues from international tourism have recovered by 68.9 percent compared to the pre-pandemic 2019, said the GNTA. Acting GNTA Head Medea Janiashvili said the dynamics of tourism recovery had increased “significantly” in the four months. “When we talk about the dynamics of tourism recovery, our main goal is to have as high a share of tourists in the total number of international travelers as possible, which would automatically be reflected in revenue [...] We have such a positive result in April that it guarantees us being able not only to keep this rate until the end of the year, but also to increase it further,” Janiashvili said.

Other data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia showed Georgia hosted 431,300 international visitors in the first quarter of the year, with the figure being 4.8 times higher compared to the same period of 2021. The visitors also accounted for 460,000 tourist visits in the country - 3.9 times higher year-on-year, Geostat said. “[In the figures,] 89.6 percent of the international visitors were only tourists. The share of excursionists amounted to 7.2 percent, while 3.2 percent of visitors were both tourists and same-day visitors,” the statistics body added. The Georgian word ‘lobio’ means ‘beans’. There are a number of varieties of this dish and we will show how to make one of the most popular.

So, prepare your apron and kitchen tools and here we go: LOBIO (GEORGIAN BEAN DISH) Ingredients (4 servings): 400 grams of dried red kidney beans, 100 grams of onions, 50 grams of fresh green coriander (optional), 2 cloves of garlic, a pinch of dried coriander, half spoon of dried Blue Fenugreek, 3 bay leaves, 1 tsp black pepper and 70 grams of oil, 2 tsp salt.

Instructions Soak beans in cold water for two hours prior to cooking. Drain water and add beans, bay leaves and salt to a deep pot containing 1.5 liters of water. Cook on a medium heat until the beans are tender. Chop the fresh coriander and onions. Add fresh and dried coriander, Blue Fenugreek, garlic, black pepper and a pinch of salt to a mortar. Grind the ingredients with a pestle. Fry the chopped onions in a pan of hot oil. Drain the water from the cooked kidney beans but keep 200 milliliters in a separate jug to use later. Use the back of a wooden spoon to mash the beans on the side of the pot. Add the ingredients that were crushed in a mortar, together with fried onions and the oil they were fried in. Mash all ingredients until completely mixed, add the 200 milliliters of bean water (saved when draining the beans). Transfer the ingredients to a pot and cook on a medium heat for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Georgian baked in individual clay pots in the oven.
