EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE

Kirk Malone, president of The Villages Ear, has opened a whole new world of opportunity for thousands of people by properly fitting them with hearing instruments and vastly improving their hearing ability.

Now, he is creating a first-rate impression for patients who walk through the door.

His newest office, which opened last February in the Brownwood area, does not have a clinical feel. Instead, the waiting room resembles an upscale living room, complete with comfortable furniture and warm pendant lighting. The overall brightness and spaciousness of the reception area soothes, calms, and cheers the soul.

In addition to the modern and inviting atmosphere, there is the smiling face of Patient Care Coordinator Patty Brawner, whose personable, friendly demeanor makes you feel as if you’ve known her your entire life.

“Every time I walk into the reception room, Patty is engaging a patient in conversation. Our patients love our warm and friendly office,” said Kirk, a board-certified hearing instrument specialist.

Although this is the third Villages Ear location, Kirk wanted this office to be different. His logic is simple, yet precise. Patients tend to relax more in an attractive, comforting environment and the processes of having their hearing screening and

being fitted for hearing instruments go much more smoothly.

“I’m very excited about having a presence in Brownwood because it’s the fastest growing part of The Villages,” Kirk said. “We’re on the outskirts of Wildwood and only four miles from Leesburg and Fruitland Park. Residents from these towns have convenient access to us, and we look forward to developing relationships with them.”

The Villages Ear already has nearly 5,000 active patients and typically sees 12,000 patients each year. Approximately 70 percent of new patients come via referral, a glowing testimony to Kirk’s emphasis on patient satisfaction.

“You will not find a more caring and friendly staff, and we always put the needs of our patients first – that is our GUARANTEE! Our impeccable reputation is proof of that commitment. In addition, we

pride ourselves on treating our patients with the most advanced and up-to-date technology that the industry offers”.

No wonder The Villages Ear consistently receives an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

All of these reasons—and many more—are why The Villages Ear is The Villages largest and most trusted name in hearing healthcare.

SWEET EMOTION

It’s the holidays, a time of year when humans endure a whirlwind of emotions.

Some feel joy because they’re spending time with family while celebrating the birth of Christ.

Some feel disgust because Christmas is commercialized and they are tired of being bombarded with ads.

Some feel sadness because they are spending their first Christmas without a spouse.

Some feel anger because they have to spend a few days with a loud-mouthed inlaw.

Some feel fear because they are financially strapped and wonder whether their children will be happy on Christmas Day.

We are all emotional beings and function, through good and tough times, with the help of these five emotions. Society has us believe that joy is the star of the show, and we must constantly live in a joyous state or else we are failing ourselves and become miserable people.

However, after watching the movie Inside and Out, I realized that through sadness and fear, we share with those who care about us and gain warmth and strength through the love shown to us. Hence, sadness and fear are perfectly normal emotions that help us become emotionally stronger and more balanced.

We all experience different mental challenges on a daily basis. Who better to talk to about this controversial topic than Dr. Drew Pinsky, an addiction medicine expert and famous media personality who has been featured on numerous television and radio shows? Dr. Drew talked with Healthy Living about the joys and difficulties of treating mental illness and also shared some personal information about himself.

In this issue, we are taking a closer look at what mental illness is. We hear names like schizophrenia, bipolar, and psychotic, but the truth is most people don’t know what any of those terms mean. We simply say, “He or she has a mental illness.”

For Theresa Camp, enduring an abusive marriage negatively impacted her physical and emotional health.

“I allowed my marriage to control my thoughts and eating habits,” said Theresa, a 36-yearold teacher at Umatilla Elementary School. “I weighed 265 pounds. My self-esteem was low. I hated shopping and seeing my reflection in a mirror. I felt as low as someone could possibly feel.”

After her divorce, she was single parent to two boys and a girl. Fortunately, her children provided the ultimate incentive to embark on a much-needed lifestyle change.

“I got gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with each child,” she said. “I figured if I didn’t change my eating habits I’d eventually get full-blown diabetes.

ADVICE FOR ANYONE BEGINNING A WEIGHT-LOSS JOURNEY

“Don’t deprive yourself. If I wanted something like a chocolate bar, I’d treat myself. However, I’d only cheat like that one day a week. You don’t want to be so rigid and consumed to the point you no longer enjoy life.”

I knew I needed to take control of my life and be healthy for my kids because my ex-husband would not be there for them.”

Theresa began her weight-loss journey two years ago. She eliminated processed food and soda from her diet and stopped eating at restaurants. She also joined the Golden Triangle YMCA and began working out with a personal trainer and taking a Zumba class. In the evening, she bicycled with her children around Umatilla.

All her hard work has paid dividends. Theresa has now lost 107 pounds and gone from size 22 to size 8. To say she is a new person is an understatement.

“I feel like I’m a better mom because I’m not nearly as snappy or grumpy. I love shopping now and like seeing myself in a mirror. I am very confident in who I am.”

IF YOU’RE EATING LIKE THERESA, HERE IS WHAT YOU’D EAT THROUGHOUT THE DAY:

Breakfast: A protein shake with half a banana, seven almonds, and five dark, sweet cherries.

Lunch: Six ounces brown turkey, a cup of sweet potatoes, a half-cup of squash, and a half-cup of strawberries.

Dinner: Six ounces of meat with asparagus and brown rice.

EACH DAY, THERESA READ A MESSAGE SHE POSTED NEAR HER BED

“I can do all things through Christ.”

“I’ve hung onto that throughout my journey,” she said. “That simple message has helped me endure difficult times.”

SPLISH, SPLASH, WHY AM I WRINKLY AND PRUNEY?

There is no question taking a shower is the most efficient way to bathe. You jump into the shower, stand under the water, suds up, scrub a little bit, rinse, and you’re done. All squeaky clean and smelling much better. While showering might be the most effective way to get clean, it’s boring and totally lacking in creature comforts.

On the other hand, a nice soak in a tub of comfortably hot water gets you just as clean as a shower but, done properly, it can be something sublime. A long soak in warm, sudsy water can be an experience in decadent luxury. Just add some nice music, a good book, maybe a glass of wine… and perhaps a rubber ducky. You’re just as clean as you’d be after a shower but you’re happier and more serene.

The problem is after your nice tub bath your fingers and toes are wrinkly and yucky looking. It’s a lousy way to end a nice bath. So why does a nice, calming tub bath make you wrinkle up like an old prune?

For years, scientists believed wrinkly fingers and toes were caused by osmosis—the movement of water on dry outer layers of skin. They believed the water puffed up the skin covering the tips of our fingers and toes.

However, scientists soon discovered the wrinkling effect didn’t occur with patients who had fingertip nerve damage. This meant the wrinkling was due to an action of the nervous system rather than osmosis.

In 2011, neurobiologist Mark Changizi proposed a theory now widely accepted on the cause of finger and toe wrin-

kling in response to water. According to the Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science, “Changizi suggested that human ancestors evolved this behavior in order to get a better grip with their hands and feet under wet conditions…the wrinkles in the skin act like car tire threads, channeling water out of the way and allowing fingers and toes to grasp more effectively.”

Experiments comparing the gripping ability of wrinkled fingers and normal fingers on slippery objects confirmed Changizi’s explanation. “The ability to better maintain grip in wet conditions could give human ancestors a competitive advantage, especially in particularly wet climates,” the Journal said.

So live it up and enjoy your decadent soak in the tub. You can even pretend you’re

Cleopatra or Marie Antoinette, and your servants are fanning you. That may not be the best idea after all. Things didn’t turn out too well for either of them, did they?

FAMOUS PHYSICIAN AND CELEBRITY DR. DREW PINSKY HELPS

MENTAL HEALTH PATIENTS COPE WITH THEIR AFFLICTIONS HEAD ON.

WRITER: JAMES COMBS

People with mental illness often suffer alone. They feel disgraced by their diagnosis and fear potential damage to their social and professional statuses. Fortunately, those people have a courageous voice speaking for them in the form of a doctor, one who has passionately committed to educating the masses about mental illness and attempted to bury the horri ic stigma associated with it.

His name is Dr. Drew Pinsky, a 57-year-old addiction medicine specialist who is better known throughout the country as Dr. Drew. He juggles two contrasting careers—medicine and mass

media—to help shed light on what has become a very dark topic in America.

Television and talk radio give him effective outlets to raise awareness about mental health diseases, as well as raise the spirits of those who suffer from them. As star of the reality show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, he treated former NBA player Dennis Rodman for alcohol addiction and actor Gary Busey for cocaine addiction. Moreover, being a private practitioner allows him to treat everyday people with various mental illnesses and drug addictions successfully.

No doubt, the balancing act from private physician to national celebrity has been demanding,

LAKEHEALTHYLIVING.COM // 27
A

but it’s one Dr. Drew willingly embraces. In his eyes, mentally ill people are not “nutcases,” “psychos,” and “lunatics,” but rather people with brain abnormalities requiring effective medical treatment. No different from people who visit doctors for abnormalities of their heart, lungs, and nervous system.

“I remember early in my career, I’d kind of push the media away so I could focus on my private practice ive days a week. On Friday afternoons and Saturday, we’d do ive or six shows each day of my radio show Loveline. About three years ago, I found myself doing a daytime syndicated show for Warner Brothers, a show for HLN, and a radio show. It was impossible to continue practicing medicine the way I always had.”

Today, Dr. Drew continues providing outpatient psychiatry services, but most of his effort is focused on being a fulltime media personality. That has proven to be a challenging transition, especially for a doctor who is so passionate about treating mentally ill patients. Yet, he’s content with opening minds and hearts to one of the most stigmatized and even ignored diseases in this country—mental health.

“We have to stop being primitive in our reaction to people with mental health [issues],” he said. “Newscasters like to say that mentally ill people are being possessed by demons. That is very wrong. They are obviously thinking about the 13th century. Demons don’t possess brains; brains become disordered for various reasons. In order to understand brain

disorders, we need to become much more sophisticated and much less primitive. The brain is an organ. It has predictable pathologies that have predictable responses. They’re not bad people; they’re people with a bad illness.”

IN SEPTEMBER, LIVING

INTERVIEWED DR. DREW.

AQmedical school, I was training as an internist and on my way to becoming a cardiologist. During my residency, I began moonlighting at a psychiatric hospital and became intrigued with psychiatric patients. I was director of medical services and spent lots of time in the drug rehab unit. In 1990 I became director of the hospital and knew I had to get my act together in terms of understanding how to effectively treat the con licts patients were dealing with. I spent several years training myself and learned to love the ield of treating drug addicts.

QWhat are some of the more challenging aspects of dealing with people who have mental health issues?

AGetting them access and inding them resources. On the patient side, my frustration is denial and lack of trust.

QFor you, what is it like to help people in seemingly hopeless situations turn their lives around?

AIt gives me hope for anyone. I’ve been astonished

by the least hopeful situations. I know what it’s like when a patient is able to turn his or her life around, so I hold out hope for everybody.

QAre mental health patients mistrustful of you and how do they treat you?

APeople spit in my face and scream at me. They typically engage in splitting behaviors where I’m either the best doctor in the world or the worst doctor in the world. They can be vicious, but my job is to hold the line and stay there with them even when they’re acting awful or unwilling to comply.

QWhat are some of the biggest misconceptions people have about mental health treatment?

AThere are two common things I run into. One, that they’ve been adulterated by television psychologists who just yell at patients. This whole notion of being confrontational with mental health patients is bizarre and not useful at all. The other misconception is that you’re going to sit in someone’s of ice and they’re going to tell you what to do. They’re going to give you some solution or oracle. That’s not how it works, yet people have this weird expectation of that.

28 // HL // NOVEMBER 2015

QSeveral studies have indicated that mental health is on the rise in both children and adults during the past two decades. Do you feel this is true or are we over-diagnosing patients?

AI think it’s a combination of both. We’ve expanded the diagnostic categories, so we pathologize some illnesses that were not pathological before. We are also over-diagnosing. I also thoroughly believe in the past two decades we have gone through a period of time when childhood trauma is reaching epidemic proportion. When you see the constant breakdown of families and the

physical and sexual abuse of children, more mental health issues are going to accompany those things.

QWhat sort of problematic behaviors do children with mental illness engage in?

AWhen it comes to trauma, they use drugs, cut themselves, and even commit suicide. Now we have a new problem—the Internet and social media. Children are getting exposed to predators and sexual images. Also, when they spend hours on the Internet, children become socially isolated, lonely, and depressed.

QHow can people go about finding a mental health professional for themselves or their children?

AObviously you should start with your primary doctor or insurance carrier. However, one thing I can say is there is going to be an inclination from your primary care physician and the system to not refer you to a proper doctor. It’s very simple. If you have a heart problem you visit a cardiologist. Similarly, if you have a brain problem you need to see a psychiatrist or psychologist. You have to ight hard for a referral. And when you receive a diagnosis, don’t just depend on prescriptions from your primary care physician.

QHow long does it take to properly assess a patient?

AA psychiatrist can walk into a room, spend a little time with a patient, and know diagnostically what’s going on. That doesn’t mean they’re into the psychodynamics of what an individual patient’s issues are as a human, but they can diagnostically assess you rather quickly.

QSome psychiatrists have done away with talk therapy because insurance no longer pays for it. So instead, they prescribe medication. Does this trend bother you?

AI’m a huge advocate of talk therapy, which takes time, especially if you’re dealing with a patient who has undergone some type of trauma. Talk therapy has many bene its, one of them being that people actually may be more comfortable talking to a stranger about their mental health problems than family or friends.

LAKEHEALTHYLIVING.COM // 29
”PEOPLE SPIT IN MY FACE AND SCREAM AT ME. THEY TYPICALLY ENGAGE IN SPLITTING BEHAVIORS WHERE I’M EITHER THE BEST DOCTOR IN THE WORLD OR THE WORST DOCTOR IN THE WORLD. THEY CAN BE VICIOUS, BUT MY JOB IS TO HOLD THE LINE AND STAY THERE WITH THEM EVEN WHEN THEY’RE ACTING AWFUL OR UNWILLING TO COMPLY.“

QThere have been several states in recent years that have decriminalized marijuana. Yet, you have been on record as saying marijuana is addicting. Can you elaborate on that and tell us why you feel that way?

ABecause I’ve treated marijuana addiction thousands of times. An addiction is a relationship with a substance that you cannot stop. Period. There is no such thing as psychologically addicted. You either can stop or you cannot. I’ve treated patients who were addicted to cannabis, cocaine, and alcohol, and the one they have trouble stopping the most is cannabis. People are told that marijuana is not addicting and not that big of deal, so they think it’s okay to use frequently. They start loving the drug and ind themselves in big trouble.

QWhat are the classic marijuana withdrawal symptoms?

AThe withdrawal symptoms typically last two weeks. The biggest symptoms are irritability, insomnia, desperation, and paranoia.

A DISTINGUISHED CAREER

RADIO

• Loveline, a national radio show he started in 1984 as a medical student.

• Dr. Drew Live, a nationally syndicated talk radio show begun in 2007 that focused on multiple health issues.

• Dr. Drew Midday Live with Mike Catherwood launched in this year on KABC in Los Angeles.

QAre you against marijuana?

AI want you to know that I’m not anti-marijuana, anti-alcohol, or anti-anything. If people want to use a substance periodically and enjoy themselves, then I think that’s perfectly ine. The problem surfaces when you frequently begin using a substance and cannot stop. Also, I want to emphasize that there are no such things as good drugs and bad drugs. That logic is terribly lawed.

It’s the genetics of the biology and psychology of a given

individual into a relationship with another chemical that creates a syndrome we call addiction—when they have a brain af liction they cannot stop on their own and need comprehensive management in order to do so.

QThere’s a negative stigma attached to mental illness. What can we do as a country to have a better understanding of mental health issues?

AThis is something I chant all the time. To me, the negative stigma is bizarre. I understand that mental

health patients may behave in unusual or strange ways, but it’s because they have a brain disorder. Your brain can get sick just like your pancreas or heart can get sick. The brain is a wonderful, fascinating organ, but it doesn’t function well sometimes. Why people cannot understand that the brain gets sick just like other body parts is very frustrating to me. I hope society educates itself about mental illness and provides the same kind of support and love to a mental health patient they would a cancer patient.

THREE’S COMPANY

In November 1992, Dr. Drew’s wife, Susan, gave birth to triplets— Douglas, Jordan, and Paulina.

“The first five years were insane,” he said. “Looking back, I’m not sure how my wife and I successfully raised three infants. However, by the time they were eight, they attended the same school, had the same friends, and played the same sports. Therefore, things became a little easier.”

Although his children turn 23 this

month, Dr. Drew is discovering that you never stop being a parent.

“I’m actually finding that right now is one of the most challenging parts of parenting. My kids all attended excellent schools and did magnificently, and now they all want to go out into the real world. It’s hard for me to know what to tell them because it’s an entirely different world than when I graduated. When they come to me for advice, I feel anxious and clueless.”

DR. DREW UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

Exercising: My garage serves as both my gym and meditation room. I’m in there four to five days a week working out, and I like to run, too.

Favorite foods: For breakfast I have one egg over easy with a cup of coffee. I don’t really have time for lunch so I munch on vegetables throughout the day. For dinner I try to have vegetables and plant-based foods.

Something few people know about you: Many people don’t know that I sang in an opera company for several years while attending college. Ironically, one of my sons is now singing opera, and he has much more talent than I ever did.

Favorite movie: “Love and Death” by Woody Allen.

Favorite sports team: I like the Los Angeles Lakers. I go all the way back to when the Lakers had an awesome rivalry with Oscar Robertson and the Milwaukee Bucks. We also attend several UCLA football games in the Rose Bowl each year.

Hobbies: Reading and listening to lectures. I attended a liberal arts college that set me on a path to learning that I cannot get off of.

Favorite book: The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. It was one of the greatest reading experiences I ever had. The author was completely in love with the subject and brought the book to life in a manner where I just could not put it down.

WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING A CELEBRITY?

“People approach me when I’m out in public all the time. I love people, and I’m willing to talk to anyone who is ready to talk. They either are very kind or they want very complicated help. That’s a little difficult because they describe situations that would take three to five years to properly treat. They want it now and don’t understand the complexity of what they’re asking.”

Lifestyle Solutions MedSpa:

LOOK BETTER, FEEL BETTER, BE HEALTHY

As co-founders of Lifestyle Solutions MedSpa, Dr. Michael Holloway, medical director and wife, Shannon Holloway, who serves as the company’s executive director, have developed an outstanding reputation for transforming clients both physically and emotionally. The MedSpa has a 12-year reputation for delivering medically-directed weight management and medical spa services to clients throughout the region.

Throughout the years, many of their clients drove from The Villages and surrounding areas to Ocala. Now, all these state-of-theart services will be offered closer to home. The couple recently opened a second location in The Villages, and it’s safe to say this magnificent 3,500 squarefoot facility will leave a lasting impression.

The new facility is located in a serene area off U.S. Hwy. 441 in the beautiful Oaks at 138th medical complex. As clients approach the MedSpa their senses

will tune in to the unique exterior features, such as the natural and soothing sounds of a four-tiered waterfall just in front of the grand corner-tower entrance.

Their minds will become even more at ease after seeing the facility’s striking décor, which resembles a world-class resort. After a brief stop at the elegant coffee station clients will feel a sense of home as they approach the beautifully adorned lobby which features an awe-striking bubble-wall behind the reception desk. The bubble-wall provides a peaceful and calming effect as mesmerizing air bubbles constantly flow and change colors: green, red, blue, purple, and gold.

“De-stressing is very important because stress is a major issue in our society and a much overlooked part of health,” Dr. Holloway said. “Stress affects all aspects of one’s health including struggles with weight, blood pressure, diabetes, energy levels and mood. “Residents of the greater Villages community have asked us repeatedly to open a second practice that was closer to them,” Dr. Holloway said. “We’re excited that we can better accommodate them. Let’s get pampered

Lifestyle Solutions MedSpa is a medical practice that blends result oriented treatments with the upscale feel and atmosphere of a destination resort. The wealth of services offered include weightloss, CoolSculpting®, Botox ® , Restylane ®, customized facials including the incredible Hydrafacial®, peels, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, IPL photofacials, fractional skin resurfacing, permanent make-up and massage just to name a few.

“In addition to being a certified CoolSculpting® site we are one of only a few practices that offers ‘dual-sculpting’ which is very beneficial to our clients,” said Shannon. “For example, if they want to get rid of fat on both ‘love-handles’, then we can use two machines at once rather than have them come for two separate appointments. This cuts treatment times in half.”

The MedSpa’s technology is all FDA cleared and proven. The Holloway’s pride themselves on offering only evidence and outcome based models of care. “We’ve done our due diligence by carefully researching each of these procedures,” they said. “That’s why we have an incredible success rate in everything we do here. If we do not feel a treatment or procedure will provide a client with the desired result, then we do not incorporate it into our practice model.”

It’s time to renew and refresh

For two years, the Holloways have carefully thought out every detail in creating not only a practice with a unique design but also how to maximize efficient use of space. Their hard work has certainly paid dividends.

The meticulous attention to

detail and stunning décor will certainly leave patients feeling breathless. Crape myrtles, palm trees, butterfly gardens, four-tiered waterfalls, and stone columns dot the landscape. Inside, as a client undergoes treatment in a spa room, they can maximize relaxation by gazing skyward at the glimmering fiber optic star dome ceiling that features shooting stars and soothing colored sunrises and sunsets.

After treatment the client will experience the spa bathrooms that contain beautiful mosaic tile with a state of the art body shower, crystal vanity light and a beautiful lavatory faucet that illuminates to provide a visual of the water temperature (red is hot, green is

warm, and blue is cold). Each spa room and treatment room features a unique décor and color scheme, including eye-catching paintings that hang on the wall. The bronze and copper colored restrooms in the waiting area add even more elegance, style, and artistic beauty to the facility.

In addition, the MedSpa offers a unique spa package for a “girls’ day out” or “couples escape” where they can undergo simultaneous treatments and in-between treatments enjoy a healthy catered lunch in a private, quiet oasis outside while listening to light music and admiring a butterfly

garden and tranquil fountain. A simple massage is another wonderful way to de-stress.

Without question, you’ll be hard pressed to find a medical spa that can compare with the breadth, depth, and scope of services offered at Lifestyle Solutions MedSpa. The wonderful amenities, the unmatched sense of caring, and the high level of attentiveness will undoubtedly leave patients feeling rejuvenated and wanting to

come back for more.

Simply put, this is a place that you must experience for yourself!

OVERHEAD PRESS

1Stand with your feet shoulderwidth apart and your knees slightly bent. Hold a pair of dumbbells just outside your shoulders with your arms bent and palms facing each other.

2 Press both dumbbells up until the weights are overhead and your arms are straight. Pause, then lower the dumbbells under control back to the starting position.

TRAINER’S TIPS

1. Keep your shoulder blades tucked down and back for more shoulder stability as you press the weights overhead.

2. Don’t excessively arch your lower back as you press the weights overhead.

3. Don’t allow your elbows to flare out to the sides.

WHAT IS THE DELTOID MUSCLE?

The triangular-shaped deltoid muscle is located on the outside of the shoulder. The main function of the muscle is to rotate the upper arm and extend the arm at the shoulder.

Benefits of strengthening your deltoid muscle

1ANTERIOR LIFT

Get in a standing position with feet shoulder-width apart. Hold weights in your hands with palms facing out. Raise the weights upward at the same time at a 45-degree angle. Rather than gripping the weights in your hand, cup your hands in a way that the weights rest in your palms. Make sure your elbows are locked at a 45-degree angle and lift and lower from waist to shoulders. Do 12 reps.

2

When you strengthen your deltoids in addition to other muscles in your shoulders, upper back, and arms, it creates a wellproportioned look and also balances muscle strength. This also helps lessen the chances of an injury.

Strong shoulders are extremely important for athletes, especially those who play tennis, football, wrestling, and baseball.

Strengthening your deltoids will also make lifting and pushing heavy objects easier.

You will have better posture with strong deltoids.

POSTERIOR LIFT

Grip weights and hold them with your palms facing down. Be relaxed and steady in raising and lowering the weights. Make sure your arms are locked along the lateral or sides of the body. Do 12 reps.

3

POSTERIOR LIFT

With this exercise, make sure your knees and hips are bent but keep a neutral spine. Make a V-shape with the weights in front of you, with palms up but not gripping. Next, pull your shoulders toward the spine to lift the weights upward and backward. This exercise strengthens the rotator cuff but also focuses on the back of the shoulders and deltoid muscle. Again, do 12 reps.

3 SIMPLE WAYS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR DELTOID MUSCLE

causes, varies from year to year. Because many flu symptoms mimic that of the common cold, it can be difficult to tell what illness you have. If it is influenza, the earlier you are diagnosed can make a difference in how long the flu lasts or how severe it may become.

COLD AND FLU SEASON

How do you tell if it’s flu, or just the common cold? Both are upper respiratory infections caused by viruses, so many of the symptoms appear to be similar. Chest congestion, a sore throat, and a feeling of tiredness are all symptoms of a cold; but, if they are

accompanied by extreme weakness, muscle and joint aches, and a high fever, then you also have symptoms of the flu. Generally, flu symptoms come on more quickly and are much more severe than cold symptoms. Common symptoms include:

• Severe Aches and Pains

• Exhaustion, Fatigue & Weakness

• Cough

• Chest Discomfort

Symptoms can also include sneezing, sore throat, and stuffy nose; however, these aren’t as common. What’s known as the “stomach flu” actually has nothing to do with influenza. In fact, stomach issues are rarely a part of flu.

WHY GET PROTECTED?

WHO SHOULD BE VACCINATED?

Everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. This «universal» flu vaccination recommendation was passed in an effort to expand protection against the flu to more people. Vaccination is especially important for those at high risk of having serious flu-related complications or those who live with or care for high-risk individuals. According to the CDC, high-risk

categories include:

• Young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart and lung disease, and people 65 years and older.

• Children younger than 6 months are at high risk of serious flu illness, but are too young to be vaccinated. People who care for them should be vaccinated instead.

The flu can be scary. Seasonal flu shots are 60-90 percent effective in prevention. Even if you still get the flu, if you’ve had your shot, your symptoms will likely be less severe. Every Centra Care location offers flu shots for just $25. Contrary to what some people believe, it is impossible to get the flu from the flu shot. The flu vaccine generally takes about two weeks to be most effective in fighting off the virus, so it is possible to contract the virus during that time, but the vaccine is not the cause.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT YOU HAVE THE FLU: Centra Care has a quick influenza test that can confirm flu within minutes. Being diagnosed early on can make a difference in how long the flu lasts or how severe it may become. Prescription anti-viral medications (like Tamiflu) are very effective in shortening the duration of flu, and all Centra Care locations carry this. However, you need to start the medication within 48 hours of symptom onset, so don’t wait too long before being seen for Flu symptoms.

PLAN, DON’T STRESS OVER, YOUR HOLIDAY EATING

Every year, people will look at the turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes — dripping in melted butter and brown sugar —, pies, cakes and all the rest.

They’ll stop briefly and sigh, thinking how bad it all is, then say “damn the potatoes, full-steam ahead!”

Afterward, the table will look like the aftermath from Hurricane Andrew and each person will feel like a stand-in in a Pepto-Bismol commercial, facing the depression and guilt for falling off the diet wagon they hadn’t really been on since their last New Year’s resolution.

And every year I repeat: “You haven’t eaten well the whole rest of the year, why worry about it now?”

Many of us are already stressed about the schedules, money issues and family problems. Adding stress over food doesn’t help. There are things you can do to keep your sanity during the holiday season:

1. Plan ahead: If you’re going to a party, don’t go hungry. Have a healthy snack beforehand and it will lessen your risk of overindulging.

2. Sample, don’t binge: Take small samples, one of each cookie instead of five, one plate of food instead of three, etc. Everything in moderation, including alcohol.

3. Damage control: If you binge one day, don’t keep going for the rest of the month. Go back to eating well the next day.

4. Keep your mood up: Plan activities that will keep you busy and upbeat before you start feeling down. Have your favorite comedy ready. Keeping your moods up will lessen stress eating.

5. Enlist a support team: Find “positive” friends or family

members to help you stay in control. Have them slip a secret code word into the conversation that will remind you when to say no. (And, be nice to them, since you asked them for help.) If you have a group going to the same party you can all bring healthier food with a few “gourmet” desserts.

This is the time to have fun and enjoy the people and the season. The feelings of love and joy should be about

sharing time with one another, not the food. You can still enjoy the holidays without eating every cake, cookie and turkey in sight. After the first of the year we can work on really getting you healthy.

ENJOY HOLIDAY FOODS WHILE ENDURING CANCER TREATMENT

WRITER: DONNA HECKLER

You’re heading into the usual round of holiday feasts with a feeling of anxiety — maybe even dread — not because you’re afraid of adding a few pounds, but because you’re undergoing cancer treatment and have no interest in food.

Or maybe you’re hosting the party this year, and you’ll have a friend or family member at your table who’s undergoing treatment. You wonder how best to accommodate his or her appetite or needs.

While food still may not taste as good to you as it did pre-cancer, good nutrition is more important now than ever. Eating well and eating enough can help with everything from withstanding side effects to healing and recovering more quickly to lowering your risk of infection to simply feeling better and stronger. The following tips can help you to enjoy food this holiday season and beyond:

• Use plastic utensils to lessen the metallic taste in your mouth. Chemotherapy kills cells in your mouth that

create saliva, creating the metallic taste, made worse by silverware. Don’t want the cheap looking white plastic at your fancy table? It comes in a silver color.

• Marinate meat, poultry and fish in sweet sauces; that also cuts the metallic taste.

• Be open to trying new foods or those you’ve not liked in the past. Treatment does a number on your taste buds. Just because one of your favorites — say, sweet potato casserole — has lost its appeal, the Brussels sprouts you’ve never liked may actually hit the spot.

• A sweet treat this time of year is a cranberry sorbet, found at specialty grocers, or make it yourself. Recipes can include orange and lemon juice, even a touch of ginger, all of which often taste good when you’re undergoing treatment and are good for you, too. For fun, serve it mid-meal in a wine or martini glass as a pallet cleanser.

• Cold and room temperature (or warm) foods are likely to taste better to you than hot foods. You don’t

have to avoid the hot; just let it cool down before you dig in.

• The best beverage on the menu is water, lots and lots of it, because chemo and radiation therapies dehydrate the body. If you have trouble downing a lot of plain water, try infusing it with herbs or fruit to make it more appealing. Staying hydrated is one of the simplest and best things you can do for yourself.

• Still don’t feel like eating? Bring a nutritional shake or two (such as Ensure, Boost, or NutraPrime) with you to the party so your energy doesn’t flag, and you’re getting the nutrition that you need.

VEGGIES FOR THE NOODLER

Are you ready to learn the fundamentals of a brainhealthy diet? We’ll be getting down to the basic building blocks of your body and thus, the building blocks of your brain. The higher quality materials you use for building and maintaining your body and brain, the higher quality the final product will be.

Your diet choices affect your brain health both directly and indirectly. It has a direct impact because your brain needs raw materials to fuel it and to build new cells like any other part of your body. Your diet indirectly affects your brain because it greatly affects the overall health of your body. A healthy diet can lower the rate of cognitive decline from aging and can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

So, let’s get into the bread and butter of a good diet, or rather into the veggies and nuts.

MEDITERRANEAN MASH UP

This technique combines well-known elements from a Mediterranean diet with a few modifications and additions based on recent dietary and neuroscientific research.

The Mediterranean diet is central because it’s one of the best known “one size fits all” diets for good health. On top of this there is good evidence that sticking with the Mediterranean diet reduces cognitive decline as a result of aging as well as the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

BRAIN HEALTH PART 3

The Mediterranean base...

• Eat primarily plant-based foods.

• Eat lots of vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and some fruits.

• Use plant-based oils, such as olive oil, canola oil or flaxseed oil.

• Use herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods.

• Limit red meat as much as possible and eat fish several times a week.

The mash-up modifications...

• Fill your plate with as much as 50 percent veggies.

• Cut back on carbohydrates so they only make up 25 percent of your total plate.

• Emphasize whole-grain varieties of carbohydrates.

• In general, the less processed the food is, the better it is for your brain and body.

• Processing the food removes many of the essential vitamins and nutrients your body needs.

• Eat fruits, but don’t overdo it. And try to stick with the less sweet ones.

• Avoid sugar. (Ouch!) That may be the toughest one for most of us. This includes sweet and dried fruit, soda, chocolate, jams, most cereals and again, many processed foods.

• Avoid heating plant-based oils, as it damages the otherwise healthy fats and makes them unhealthy. Cook the food first, then apply oils, or use the oils directly on salad or veggies.

• For frying, use coconut oil. This type of fat is the least prone to developing damaging compounds during the frying process. The second best choice is olive oil.

Next time you sit down for dinner with your family or friends, tell them as much as you can remember about the Mediterranean Mash Up, so you’ll learn it by heart. Explain the connection between the diet, the body and the brain.

And, that’s it. The next entry in the series will look at how toxins affect your brain health, but until then… Bon Appétit!

LOVING SOMEONE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS

Depending upon which organization’s study you are reading, the rate of mental illness in the United States ranges from 18.5 to 27.5 percent of the adult population. So, it is likely that each of us lives with or is in a close relationship with someone suffering some form of mental illness. Those who love and advocate for those afflicted often feel lonely, exhausted, isolated and forgotten in their efforts. Here are three reminders to help you or someone you know not become consumed by the special effort to love someone with mental illness.

Realize their behaviors are not about you.

When someone we love is suffering depression, it is hard not to think “what could I be doing to make them happy” and when they do not respond positively, then take it personally. Similarly, when the borderline person pulls away from relationship, common response is to wonder “if only I had been better, this wouldn’t have happened”. In these situations, we see the symptoms of the disorder as a reflection

of who we are. Your worth as a person should not be determined by another’s behavior. This is true of any relationship. Developing awareness of the other person’s symptoms is a necessary and helpful first step in distinguishing what responses come from normal relational feedback, and what behaviors are part of the struggle with mental illness. Learning to break dependence on a reflected sense of self will help you in all relationships.

Resist trying to fix the other person.

Feelings of helplessness are common in those who love and care for those who are ill. These feelings can well up into frustration as nothing seems to change. In an effort to try to gain control of the situation, it may seem reasonable to implore the sick person to “just stop” some behavior or tell them “if you would only do” something, they would feel better.

It is important to realize that in most instances, the person who is sick does not want to behave or think that way. Instead of trying to fix, demonstrate compassion. Don’t confuse compassion with pity. Compassion is a willingness to love another in their circumstances. Sometimes this may just be hugging the person and reminding them they are loved, and other times it is by making sure they are taking their medications.

Find support.

The feeling that no one understands what you are going through can become

overwhelming. Be intentional about finding people who can show you the same compassion that you show the one you love. This is an important part of maintaining a healthy emotional self.

Often embarrassment, or not wanting to appear weak, keeps us from sharing our struggles with friends who want to be part of our lives.

At the same time, it becomes easy to let our struggles dominate interactions with others. Part of your emotional health is finding outlets to release tension and frustration. A complement to good friendships is finding a support group of those walking a similar path. Don’t be afraid to ask a professional what is available in your area.

Additionally, there are resources online provided by many organizations that specialize in treatment of mental illness. Needing others is not a sign of weakness!

OUT INSIDE ANALYZING EMOTIONS AND IN AN DE ONS S ZING E SID EMOTIO ANA NS ALYZ A

Death and taxes are not the only constants in life. Throughout the course of a day, month, or even year, we experience a wide range of emotions. In fact, ask yourself how you’re feeling as you begin reading this article.

Maybe you’re feeling extreme joy over a promotion.

Perhaps you recently lost a family member and feel sadness.

You may be feeling disgust over an ignorant, hate-filled comment you read this morning on Facebook.

There is a possibility you feel fear because your company is downsizing and you may lose your job.

Then again, you may be experiencing extreme anger because your child was suspended in school.

UT E

OU ND D T NSI NSIID

Experiencing a wide range of emotions is perfectly normal. Being human is an emotional experience because we all endure triumphs, failures, and struggles throughout life.

That was the message in the animated movie “Inside Out,” which was released in June. In the movie, an 11-year-old girl named Riley moved with her family from Minnesota to San Francisco. There are five characters who control her “headquarters,” or brain: Joy, Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Sadness. Because Joy is the most active, Riley has enjoyed a happy life full of family vacations, lots of friends, and memorable moments as an ice skating competitor.

However, shortly after Riley and her family settle in San Francisco, Joy loses control when she and Sadness are kicked out of

s now contro

headquarters. Riley’s brain is now controlled by Anger, Fear, and Disgust. The small girl begins lashing out at her parents, fighting with friends, and sees her life in a negative view.

The movie’s important lesson occurs as Joy and Sadness attempt to make their way back to headquarters. Before, Sadness could never understand Joy’s optimism, while Joy could never understand why Sadness was depressed and pessimistic. Yet, spending time together allowed the characters to see that both emotions play an equally important role in people’s lives.

For instance, Riley receives unconditional support and love from her parents whenever she is sad. Their love helps heal Riley’s pain and allows her to express her feelings. And whenever she faces difficult times head on, she grows and matures as a person. Moreover, Sadness helps her gain a greater appreciation during the times she feels happy.

”Inside Out” teaches us that experiencing every emotion—even the bad ones—is an important part of human existence. Here’s a closer look why it is both healthy and natural to experience the full range of emotions in our lives.

FEAR ME NOT

Fear can make us panic and stop us dead in our tracks. However, it is not a sign of weakness. In fact, research indicates that fearlessness may be an indication of a problematic brain where people experience emotional and social problems.

Believe it or not, fear has a place in our lives.

Fear keeps us alive. Without it, we would not know to run away from a thousand-pound grizzly bear or stay away from a ledge. Fear is responsible for our fightor-flight response and is a biochemical reaction necessary for survival.

Fear makes us feel alive. What sounds more exciting… sitting at home watching a movie or zip lining across a mountain? It is very invigorating to face your fears because doing so is a natural and positive drug. There is a big difference between existing and living.

Feeling fear typically means you are doing something awesome with your life. Olympic athletes and successful businesspersons experience fear all the time. They are great because they are doing something worthy of fear.

Fear increases confidence and self-esteem. Achieving a feat that initially seems impossible makes you a

stronger person. As your confidence grows, so does your spirit.

Fear triggers the natural fight-or-flight response in our body. Therefore, we know immediately whether a situation is threatening and how we should deal with it.

TEMPER YOUR TEMPER…A LITTLE

“Fear gripped my body several months ago when I opened my mouth to tell my husband goodnight. My speech was slurred; I couldn’t talk. We called 911 and tests determined I had suffered a mild stroke. I could not believe it because I am a 49-yearold woman who only one year ago completed a cross-country bicycle ride. Although I was initially afraid, my fear has motivated me. I am now riding my bicycle 20 miles a day and I’m constantly blogging about the aftermath of my stroke. People who read my blog say it has inspired them to better cope with their issues, so it’s all worth it.”

—Tracy Draper, Mount Dora

are as es yple tes,

Fear causes the body to produce extra adrenaline, which boosts circulations and heightens awareness. Therefore, riding a screaming roller coaster or bungee jumping off a cliff may make you feel more alive than ever.

There are many legitimate reasons not to become angry. Anger can make us engage in self-destructive behavior or say nasty things to friends or family members that we later regret. However, just like any emotion, anger can be beneficial.

Anger can be a motivating force, helping us push toward our goals even when obstacles arise. Let’s suppose a friend tells you buying a Ford Mustang is unattainable because you do not work hard enough or you foolishly spend money and cannot save enough. While that comment will make you angry, it will light a fire under you to prove your friend wrong.

Justifiable anger can be used to find a solution in relationships. If your spouse does something that constantly annoys you, then being angry will communicate to the spouse that he or she is committing an injustice. Conversely, if you hide anger, then your spouse will continue doing the thing that annoys as you have not communicated that he or she is doing something wrong. That would be detrimental to the relationship.

Anger can actually reduce violence. When someone is angry, it sends a strong signal

58 // HL // NOVEMBER 2015

w fo ca th an de w us re do sta be ni he in hi w th co is Th th vi an

that a situation needs to be resolved. When others sense this signal they are motivated to try and calm the angry person. Without the ability to express anger, the offended party may have resorted to physical violence.

Anger serves as an alert system that something is wrong on a personal, interpersonal, or societal scare. This is beneficial and may be the reason we’re no longer in an unhealthy relationship, why there are no segregated water foundations, or why someone leaves a stressfilled, unrewarding job.

DON’T WORRY, BE SAD!

Sadness is frowned on in society. The prevailing thought is that someone who is sad should be avoided because his pessimism and negative outlook will only bring others down. The sad truth; however, is that there are clear and distinct advantages to being sad.

effective way to cope with the problem or problems we’re facing in life. It’s the first step to feeling better and returning to a baseline level of happiness.

Sadness can increase our motivation levels because we exert effort to change our unpleasant state. In contrast, happier people are sometimes less motivated to make changes.

Crying flushes the body of toxic chemicals and reduces stress levels because it releases a natural pain killer hormone.

A scientific study conducted by a professor at Columbia Business School revealed that feeling sad stimulates our creativity.

“I am an employee with Lake County Property Appraiser, and one of my duties is to formulate computer programs to make the job more convenient and easier for appraisers who are out in the field. There are times when I become fuming angry because I cannot get something on the computer to work. I realize that my anger may be misplaced. I step back, start from the beginning, and go piece by piece. So in my case, anger makes me realize I need to be rational so I can effectively reevaluate and analyze what I am doing.”

People who are constantly happy may have trouble understanding why others feel sad or depressed. Conversely, when you feel sadness yourself, you are more likely to be sensitive, compassionate, and empathetic toward others.

“Years ago I attended a conference in Oregon. One morning I was walking in a park and met a young struggling artist who was sitting on a bench. He told me how all his friends who wanted to become doctors or computer engineers had opportunities to receive scholarships and advance in their careers. He did not have the same opportunity because he was an artist. I felt very sad at that moment. There wasn’t much I could do to help him. However, in 1998, I started a nonprofit organization called Young Performing Artists. Since its inception, we have awarded $35,000 in scholarship money to young artists in the community. Had it not been for my sad encounter with the young artist in Oregon, I likely would have never formed Young Performing Artists.”

BURST WITH JOY

Feeling joy in our lives is the one emotion we all crave. Unfortunately, it seems to come easier from some than others. Joy provides us with endurance and strength, helps us recover easier when we’re upset, and pushes us to persevere through trials and tribulations.

Studies have proven that feeling joy is associated with lower stress-related hormones and better immune function. In short, joy contributes to longer, healthier lives.

When you go about life in a joyful state, your body continues releasing hormones of euphoria.

Life is all about relationships. Feeling joy and happiness is contagious. Happy people attract other happy people.

Seniors who constantly feel joy are 35 percent less likely to die within the next five years, according to a study released in 2011.

Joyful people are more likely to experience all life has to offer. That means expanding horizons and engaging in new activities such as golf, tennis, marathon running, scuba diving, waterskiing, and even bungee jumping.

A study conducted at Carnegie Mellon University discovered that happy people are less likely to catch colds and experienced fewer symptoms when they did get sick. The study also revealed that depressed, nervous, or angry people are more likely to complain about colds.

“I work as manager of community relations at South Lake Hospital. Recently, a sixth-grade student approached us and asked if we’d help sponsor a project she is doing for Girl Scouts. The project is called Morning Mile, where children in elementary schools walk laps before school begins. She is trying to get the program implemented in all local elementary schools so children can become active and healthy. Our hospital decided to sponsor one of the schools. This brought me lots of joy because we’re all working together to achieve a healthier community, and the fact that a little girl spearheaded this project, is very heartwarming.”

DELICIOUSLY DISGUSTING

Disgust is an emotion that, for whatever, reason, takes a backseat to joy, sadness, fear, and anger. We’re going to shine a spotlight on disgust, nonetheless. After all, it is an emotion that begins early in childhood. Surely you remember your nose wrinkling up as you accused a classmate of having cooties, right?

Disgust plays an important role in our lives. It determines whom we’re going to kiss, whom we’re going to mate with, and whom we’re going to shun.

Disgust also determines hygiene behaviors. On the contrary, people who are not disgusted very easily may have difficulty maintaining bodily and domestic hygiene.

Disgust can help avoid infectious diseases, as those experiencing this emotion are more apt to wash their hands in a public restroom or avoid sexual activity with people who have infectious diseases.

“There were definitely things in life that disgust me. I used to pass out at the sight of blood, and whenever my children became sick and vomited I would also vomit. However, after my father suffered a massive stroke, I was able to bathe him, wash his body, and change his ostomy bag. I would have thought that kind of contact would be disgusting. However, I was honored and blessed to care for my father before he passed away. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done but also the most rewarding. When you accomplish things you never thought were possible, you become stronger and feel like you can accomplish anything.”

While disgust protects us from disease, there’s mounting evidence that it plays a more significant role in our attitudes toward everything in our lives, including food, politics, and relationships. In fact, a Cornell University psychology professor found that people who are more easily disgusted in everyday life have different moral and political views than those who are less easily disgusted.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER CREMATION?

Oftentimes loved ones clearly relay their desire to be cremated; unfortunately many never consider what will happen to their cremated remains when they are returned to their loved ones.

Quite often family members wrestle with what to do because this important discussion of what to do after the cremation has never taken place. Many times spouses choose to take the urn home with them. Sometimes spouses struggle with scattering cremated remains because their grief compels them to “hold on” and not to “let go”.

(There are also many laws and ordinances prohibiting scattering cremated remains on public grounds and waterways.) Another common issue many families encounter occurs years later when a loved one’s urn has been taken home. Quite often the spouse or family member entrusted with the care of the urn may pass away and then families struggle with what to do with two urns.

Unfortunately our staff members at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Leesburg and Lakeside Memory Gardens in Eustis are confronted

with these types of issues quite regularly. Many are not aware that our cemeteries offer many affordable options that provide a safe and permanent place that will allow families to place a loved one’s cremated remains. A Personal Columbarium such as the one pictured can be designed to accommodate single or double urns and slightly larger versions can provide alternatives for larger families. Our Columbariums are available in a large variety of styles and granite color options, and one of the most important features is that they are transportable if the need should arise due to relocation.

If you have not had a conversation concerning “After the Cremation” please explore this

topic with your loved one(s). The Columbarium discussed is one of dozens of options for cremation that we offer at our cemeteries. We offer financing options and have options for every budget. Call or stop by today and let us help you find a personal cremation option that fits your needs and desires.

Don’t fall victim to holiday hysteria and allow yourself to become depressed. A great way to grasp the big picture of the season is helping those less fortunate. Shake off the holiday blues and immerse yourself in the gift of giving.

The benefits of giving include a boosted immune system, better quality of sleep, stronger social bonds, kinder behavior toward others, greater satisfaction in life, and, most importantly, decreased stress and depression.

SPIRIT

YOU ARE THE BEST CHOICE

Have you ever thought about all the choices your children face in life? One day they will choose a college or choose not to attend college, select a person to spend their life with in marriage, decide on a home to raise their family and a career to provide for their children. There is one choice they were not given—the choice of their parents was made by God.

No matter how ill equipped, overwhelmed, or unworthy we feel as parents, we are His choice. There are no children who are mistakes. So now that we have settled that, what do we make of it? If you are anything like me, then you know by now that all children are different and not one came

with an instruction manual. It is only by God’s grace that we raise our children and they grow to be healthy and whole adults. The more you listen to “experts” in parenting the less expert they sound. You may even wonder if these people have children. Ironically, here is my “expert advice,” and yes, I have three children. Are you ready for this?

Trust God.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? You probably already know it is not as simple as it sounds. Why not? Because of us, because we are who we are, we are the parents. It is our job to worry about grades, stress over teenage relationships, and need anxiety medication to make it through our

children’s adolescence. At least, we think that is our job. Actually, we were not chosen, but called to set an example for our children. Setting an example of trust is the opposite of worry, stress, and anxiety. In fact, one of the simplest and most profound scriptures in the Bible is Philippians 4:6, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done”(NLT).

So the Bible gives us a simple anti-anxiety formula–stop worrying and pray! The biggest problem in modern Christian parenting is we are busy and we don’t take time to pray, or not as much as we need to. So we worry. We replace prayer with stress

and anxiety when the Bible says prayer is how we defeat these problems. This is not something you will do once and it will fix the problem; this is a lifestyle. So my “expert advice” is not mine, it is from a great source. It is more like instruction than advice. Here is the promise that is attached to this instruction, found in Philippians 4:7, “Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” So a life of prayer is the ultimate antistress solution in any situation. And this certainly applies to raising our kids!

All of the people I work with have some dream they are pursuing, to some degree, in their life. It may be a dream regarding a change of vocation or the pursuit of an interest. The dream may involve earning money or it may have a cost. There may be obstacles involved or the timing may not be just right.

The things we dream of come in all shapes and sizes and purposes. Dreams are the fruit of passion, and they keep us looking forward. You might just be thinking of yours right now.

A client of mine has a lifelong dream of owning a horse of his own. Riding makes him feel alive and also provides a forum to solidify his relationship with his family. Between sessions an opportunity to own a horse of his own arose, and because it was THE dream come true, he leapt at the chance.

Upon arriving at our next session, he was downcast. There were several problems with this horse; unexpected costs were mounting and it couldn’t be ridden in competition. Instead of the dream, he now felt stuck in the nightmare. What was worse is that the problems convinced him that the dream would never come true.

It took a couple sessions, but we moved through the actions and thoughts to recover from this detour and see it not as an end to the dream, but an opportunity to learn.

Here are some principles to following dreams that come from our conversations:

• Don’t allow decisions to be dictated by the dream. It takes a plan to make dreams happen. Yet, achieving the dream, no matter how good or beneficial, should not be the only consideration in decision-making. This tunnel vision will cause you to miss consequences in other areas of life that may be more pressing or life altering.

• Dreams should be flexible. A life well lived involves growth. Spiritually, emotionally, physically, and relationally we do not remain static. The dreams that we are pursuing –and the timeline on which they are sought – should be evaluated and change as your wisdom increases.

• The dream serves you so don’t let it consume you. A dream is a source of motivation—something that will add quality and value to your life and those around you. It may also give us a sense of purpose that makes each new day worth getting up for. When reaching for the dream turns into shame and questions of worth, it has taken an unhealthy position in your life.

• Pursuing the dream should not come at the expense of your values. If the dream you are pursuing is demanding that you sacrifice your sense of self and what is right and wrong, you have the wrong dream. Dreams should be consistent with our abilities, passions, and identities. What is your dream? How are you taking steps to make that dream a reality? What values keep your decisions in check?

CHANGING THE MESSAGE

Change isn’t always easy, and when it comes to changing the way we think and act, the challenge increases. We like the familiar; however, sometimes the benefits of changing are so incredible that making the decision is easy. We end up wishing we’d done it earlier.

One such change, which has been slowly happening, is the way we think about protecting children from sexual abuse, abduction, and victimization, such as human trafficking.

Tragically, children are suffering trauma and abuse every single day. If ever there was a reason for change, these statistics prove it.

The phenomenal news is we can! Education is the answer. We must educate our families, our communities, and our leaders. That education starts with raising awareness of the facts. Change happens when people understand the issues and stand up to say, “Enough!”

DID YOU KNOW?

situations and give them specific action plans when possible.

Establish open lines of communication within the family.

A big part of disturbing the awful reality, as it exists, is to change the ways we think and act when it comes to protecting our children. Parents fear their child will be snatched off the streets and the “Stranger Danger” message passes that fear onto our kids.

Unfortunately, this message has some problems. The primary concern is that 93 percent of sexually victimized children KNOW their abuser! Yet for more than 30 years, we’ve focused our energies on the much rarer 7 percent.

Instead of scaring kids with misguided fears, let’s empower them! Let’s give all children the knowledge and skill sets needed to make the best decisions possible, decisions that might be life altering, if not life-saving. Let’s teach them how to apply those skills whether they are dealing with a cunning stranger or a familiar face.

EMPOWERMENT, NOT FEAR

Teach kids about the lures predators use to trick them. Teach kids how to recognize potentially dangerous

Boost your kid’s confidence and help them learn to assert themselves when necessary.

Perhaps most importantly, let’s give our children a respect and understanding of personal boundaries. Predators test boundaries to see just how far they can go with a child. A child who recognizes and appropriately reacts can stop many molesters in their tracks. These and other tips can be found at ChildRescueNetwork.org

Imagine a world where kids grow up confident in their abilities to appropriately stand up for themselves, understand and respect personal boundaries, and can communicate their feelings and experiences.

Now be a part of the change to make it happen!

MINDS PUTTING AT EASE

LAKEHEALTHYLIVING.COM // 71
WRITER: JAMES COMBS

He pulled knives on people, threatened to kill his parents, displayed frequent outbursts of anger, and was admitted to a mental health facility on two occasions under the state’s Baker Act law.

These were not the actions of a young misguided adult. Instead, they were acts of rage committed by an elementary school boy plagued with mental illness that interfered signi icantly with his daily life.

Such erratic behavior left the young boy’s parents with a dif icult decision. They could delude themselves into thinking their child was merely going through a phase, or they could allow him to be evaluated by a mental health professional

They chose the latter. It was a wise decision because, when it comes to children and mental health, early parental intervention is vital to successful outcomes. Unfortunately, most parents have a hard time accepting their child possibly have a mental illness and scoff over the possibility of that child taking perscribed drug gpg

The boy was diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder and ADHD. He has been under the care of Dr. Thomas Valente, medical director of LifeStream Behavioral Center, for two years. He takes two types of medication—one to control his mood and another to help him overcome his short attention span.

Intervention proved invaluable because his behavior changed signi icantly. “It’s like we have a brand-new child,” said the boy’s father. “He has gone from failing to passing all his classes and he loves going to school. More importantly, he has not acted out or had a bad episode in more than two years. We’ve de initely learned that not treating a mental health issue is far worse than any side effects someone may experience with medication. However, our son hasn’t had any side effects with the medication thus far.”

A REWARDING CAREER

Success stories such as those

make Dr. Valente’s job rewarding. Since becoming medical director of LifeStream 15 years ago, he has seen numerous patients with mental illness enter remission (no longer experiencing clinical levels of symptoms) and transition back into society.

Much like heart disease or breast cancer, early recognition and treatment of a mental

illness are vitally important to help patients recover and prevent recurrence.

“With treatment, mental illness can have a high success rate,” Dr. Valente said. “Many of my patients have recovered. They realized they had a problem, sought professional help, and underwent treatment. If left untreated, mental illness is disabling because it leads to cognitive de icits and impairs

your ability to make logical decisions. Many people do not realize the brain begins deteriorating prematurely.”

While Dr. Valente treated patients with all sorts of ailments—including depression and anxiety— he said schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder are two of the most dif icult conditions to treat.

“Patients with personality

disorders are de initely the most resistant to treatment. They are mistrusting and believe everyone else has a problem…not them. They live in a very black-and-white world and either love you or hate you. Schizophrenia is the most debilitating because it is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder. The frontal lobes of your brain are not working adequately and impair

Thanks to stereotypes and stigmas about mental health, the thought of being around mentally ill patients may seem downright frightening to many. In reality, though, the vast majority of mentally ill patients are not violent. That does not stop the news media and entertainment industries

from linking violence to mental illness.

“Nine times out of 10, mentally ill patients are more likely to be victims of violent crime than perpetrators,” Dr. Valente said. “Also, the majority of people who commit violence, such as mass shootings, do not suffer from mental illness. I am not scared to work with these patients on a daily basis. In fact, I love having the opportunity to have a positive impact on their lives. Patients who un-

“I listen with my inner ear,” Dr. Valente said. “If patients are depressed they make you feel sad. If patients are addicts they frustrate you. And if patients are anxious they make you feel nervous.”

Bipolar disorder, depression, and generalized anxiety disorder are the three most common mental illnesses Dr. Valente treats. Symptoms for generalized anxiety disorder include persistent fear and anxiety without a precipitator. Depression is often accompanied with sadness, changes in appetite, decreased energy level, and feelings of guilt, insomnia, and suicide. With bipolar disorder, the most common symptom is an unstable mood.

One of those patients visited Dr. Valente in September at LifeStream Behavioral Center’s AIMS (Achieving Independence Mastery Skills) Center in Leesburg. BUILD INCOME… ONE SLICE AT A TIME

Dear Dave,

My wife and I are thinking about selling our home. I was recently let go from the military due to downsizing, and I’ve begun a job in real estate but things are starting slowly. My wife brings home about $3,500 a month as a teacher, and the only debt we have is our house payment of $1,616 a month. I was given a $35,000 severance package, but we need some advice to help bridge the financial gap. Any ideas?

—Erik

Dear Erik,

Having little or no income is a lot harder than a variable income situation. Your wife is bringing home good money, but at the moment, your house payment

is almost half that amount.

Are there some things you can do on the side while you’re getting your real estate business going that will create income? If you could make even $1,000 to $2,000 a month, it would change the picture entirely. You guys would be able to keep your home and have a little breathing room while you get your real estate career off the ground.

Looking at it from a long-term perspective, if you’re selling a bunch of houses a year or two from now, you’re in the clear. You could easily stay in the house, but if you don’t find extra income while you build your business, if you’re not willing to work extra hard and sacrifice in the meantime—even if it means just delivering pizzas—then you probably need to sell the house.

It takes about six to nine months to start making a living in the residential real estate business. So look at it this way: the more houses you sell, the less time you spend delivering pizzas. All this really hinges on is how badly you want a career in real estate and how

much you guys want to keep your home. If you want it enough, you’ll do what it takes to get there. And for the time being, that’s going to mean supplementing your income with something on the side while you grow your real estate business!

—Dave

PAY OFF DEBT FIRST

Dear Dave,

We’ve made an offer on a house we really like through a first-time buyers’ program. Now, after looking over our budget and debts again, my wife and I are having second thoughts. We haven’t signed or turned in any paperwork yet. What do you think we should do?

—Craig

Dear Craig,

I wouldn’t go through with the deal. I advise people to be debt-free before buying a home, because you want a home to be a blessing, not a curse.

Homeownership when you’re broke is never a good idea. And basically, that’s the situation you’re describing. You have debt, and you’re trying to squeak into something with a first-time buyers’ plan. The translation? You have no money. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong. That’s Murphy’s Law, and he’ll move into your spare bedroom along with his three cousins—Broke, Desperate, and Stupid.

Get your debts paid off, build up an emergency fund, and save up a good down payment before buying a home. I know that’s not the popular answer, but it’s the smart one!

THE $10,000 DRINK!

Did you know that having a drink in Lake County and then driving could cost you more than $10,000? It’s called “driving under the influence!”

The law says the legal drinking age is 21. This means you can legally have a drink. However, were you aware that with the first sip of alcohol, you become impaired? With enough sips, your blood alcohol level can rise to .08, which means you are “driving under the influence.” If your blood alcohol content rises as high as .20, there are increased penalties for DUI.

What happens if you aren’t 21? Possession of

an alcoholic beverage is a second-degree misdemeanor. You get you arrested and fined up to $500. Operating or in physical control of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .02 or greater is automatically a six-month suspension of your drivers license. No matter what your age, refusal to submit to a breathalyzer test requested by law enforcement is a oneyear automatic suspension of your driver’s license and an 18-month suspension for second or subsequent refusals. A DUI stays on your record for 75 years. A DUI cannot be expunged from your criminal record in Florida.

WOW—More than $10,000 for a drink! That was quite a drink! Keep in mind no accident was involved. No one was hurt. I didn’t include costs of incarceration. In this instance, it was a first offense. The blood alcohol content was not close to .20, or there would have been extra penalties. If any of those circumstances had been different, the costs would have been even higher.

The bottom line is that it doesn’t matter how old you are or if you are male

or female. If you drink and drive, the costs to you are only beginning.

So, if you are of legal age, call a cab or ride with a designated driver. If you aren’t of legal age, don’t drink. It’s just not worth the price you have to pay.

HOW DOES A PAYROLL

DEBIT CARD WORK?

Payroll debit cards are prepaid cards that are used specifically for the payment of wages. Employees with or without bank accounts qualify for payroll debit cards, and employees without bank accounts do not have to pay any additional fees to access funds. In addition, companies save money on paper, printer, and computer costs when using payroll cards instead of paper paychecks. Any size or type of company can use payroll

debit cards to pay wages, incentive payments or bonuses.

Payroll debit cards are similar to traditional debit cards that are linked to bank accounts. The cards differ in that wages are the only money that may be stored on a payroll debit card. Payroll cards are also not linked to any bank account, and every payday the wages owed to the employee is added to the card and immediately available to the employee.

Employees are able to use the payroll debit card for

online purchases, in-store purchases and can withdraw cash from an ATM. With a payroll card, employees are able to withdraw all the available funds once every pay period without having to pay any additional fees. Added benefits include the flexibility, security, and convenience these cards offer.

It is important to note that a payroll debit card is not a general purpose loadable card, and that there are specific regulations governing payroll debit cards. Employees are protected against unauthorized charges when using payroll debit cards, and payroll card issuers are required to disclose their

dispute resolution process and the how their fees are structured. Furthermore, payroll card issuers have to comply with a 21-day notice period when changing the terms of the agreement.

Prepaid cards are used in some states for the payment of unemployment or other benefits. The use of payroll debit cards in the private sector is increasing, and companies are moving away from the use of costly and time-consuming paper paychecks. Employees benefit from wages that are immediately available every pay period, the added security and the convenience of payroll debit cards.
