Foreword This publication is the result of a workshop which took place in Prague (November 2011) and was organized by the Centre for the Study of the Holocaust and Jewish Literature at the Institute for Czech Literature and Literary Science, Faculty of Arts at Charles University. It focuses on the problems of depicting the Shoah/the Holocaust in Central Europe, primarily in Czech, German and Polish literature, theatre and film. The workshop in Prague, held on 21st and 22nd November in the Institute of Czech Literature, Academy of Sciences, was a part of the series of workshops on this theme. These workshops were organized in cooperation with international partners who also deal with Jewish literature and culture: the Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen (Institut für Slavistik and Arbeitsstelle Holocaustliteratur) in Germany and Uniwersytet Łódzki (Pracownia Języka i Kultury Żydowskiej) in Poland. The starting point was undertaken in Gießen in May 2010. We discussed methodological problems and questions relating to images of the Shoah in literature and other media.1 The following symposia concentrated on specific historical periods of the representation of the Shoah, and compared various literatures and cultures in Central Europe which reflected this topic. The second workshop, held in Łódż in May 2011, was devoted to the immediate post-war period from 1944 to 1949.2 The proceedings of this symposium will also be published. The papers of the Prague workshop from November 2011 in this book are hence engaged in representation of the Shoah in the 1950s and 1960s. They are published in both languages, English and German, including summaries in the other language. Some of them examined literature/theatre from a more general perspective (Hans-Christian Trepte, Markus Roth and Elisa-Maria Hiemer) or from the viewpoint of literary genre (Šárka Vlasáková). The others dealt with significant authors (Anja Golebiowski, Štěpán Balík and Hana Hříbková) or analysed individual literary works and films (Valentina Kaptayn, Aleksandra Bąk-Zawalski, Tereza Šimečková, Jiří Holý, Reinhard Ibler and Marija Sruk). in literature, theatre and ﬁlm be investigated outside of its cultural and historical context. That is why this theme encourages broader interdisciplinary cooperation. Follow-up meetings of our international team will be held again in Prague, in July 2012 (the 1970s and 1980s), and in Gießen in November 2012 (the period after 1989). Polish colleagues from Łódż could not take part in the Prague symposium. Nevertheless, we believe our cooperation will continue and this encounter of various representations of Jews and the Shoah in the literatures and cultures of Central Europe will prove beneﬁcial. In June 2009, during the Czech presidency of the EU, representatives of 46 countries adopted the Terezin Declaration, which, inter alia, undertakes to take care of the study and preservation of Jewish culture. Contemporary European society is threatened by the “forgetting”, in other words, the loss of historical memory or soulless presentism. There are no perfect legal and institutional mechanisms to prevent, once and for all, any new pogroms, genocides and totalitarianism. We must therefore rely on basic moral principles and consciousness of historical memory. We hope that our workshops will serve this aim, contributing to the recovery of historical memory and the maintenance of tolerance and respect for cultural pluralism. Jiří Holý

Jiří Holý – Petr Málek – Michael Špirit – Filip Tomáš: Šoa v české literatuře a v kulturní paměti Téma monografie čtyř autorů z Ústavu české literatury a literární vědy Filozofické fakulty UK by šlo shrnout jako „implicitní polemiku“ s tradovaným výrokem Theodora W. Adorna o nemožnosti psaní poezie po Osvětimi. Tématem je právě šoa/holokaust v české literatuře s přihlédnutím k literatuře slovenské, dalším literaturám Střední Evropy a také k československému filmu. Umělecké reprezentaci šoa v literatuře a filmu se u nás dosud věnovala velmi malá pozornost, kniha v tomto navazuje na dosud ojedinělou publikaci Holokaust v české, slovenské a polské literatuře (ed. J. Holý, 2007). Studie čtyř autorů zkoumají šoa v literatuře z různých stran, přehledově ( Jiří Holý) i detailněji, z hlediska jednotlivých problémů (pamětní práce kultury – Petr Málek, šoa z pohledu viníků či traumatičnosti návratu – Jiří Holý) i autorských osobností a poetik (Michael Špirit se věnuje Josefu Škvoreckému, Filip Tomáš dílu Arnošta Lustiga a neprávem opomíjenému Jiřímu R. Pickovi). Shodují se přitom, že jde o téma zásadní, jehož umělecká reprezentace zasahuje i do hodnotových otázek současného života. Popsat a pochopit tyto na pohled nesdělitelné zkušenosti a rozumem sotva pochopitelné události zůstává pro umění i odborné zkoumání trvalou výzvou bez ohledu na časový odstup. Jan Neruda a Židé. Texty a kontexty Sborník je výstupem workshopu organizovaného Židovským muzeem v Praze a Ústavem pro českou literaturu AV ČR v roce 2010, který konfrontoval znalosti, názory a metodologii literárních vědců a historiků zabývajících se židovskými dějinami a antisemitismem. Vybrané příspěvky představují Nerudovy postoje vůči Židům, zejména jeho antisemitský traktát Pro strach židovský, v kontextu doby a analyzují jej z různých perspektiv. Ačkoli protižidovský charakter různých Nerudových textů byl často zmiňován, dosud se mu žádná práce nevěnovala obšírněji. Mediální diskuse, kterou workshop vyvolal, pak jasně ukázala, jak je důležité, aby se česká společnost kriticky vypořádala s komplexitou vlastních vztahů k Židům, v neposlední řadě i z toho důvodu, že pamﬂet Pro strach židovský je v současnosti ke stažení na několika nacionalistických a antisemitských internetových stránkách. Součástí sborníku je komentovaná edice traktátu Pro strach židovský a také ilustrace, především dobové obrazy Židů a antisemitské karikatury. Připravujeme

Vladimír Papoušek: Žalmy z Petfieldu (Egon Hostovský, příběh spisovatele 20. století) Esejistická kniha Žalmy z Petfieldu představuje život a dílo Egona Hostovského v širším kontextu dějinných událostí 20. století, jichž byl spisovatel svědkem i obětí. Její autor usiluje o prolnutí pásma své interpretace autorova díla s řečí dobových dopisů a dokumentů, na jejichž základě lze odkrývat řadu souvislostí vztahujících se k proměnám autorovy poetiky, tak aby se osvětlily kontrasty či paralely mezi řečí Hostovského beletrie a řečí samotného autora v nebeletristických typech textů. Úvodní kapitola knihy je úvahou na téma spisovatel a ideologie, následující tři se pak zabývají autorovým životem a dílem v době prvního exilu, po roce 1948 a v období od šedesátých let do jeho smrti v roce 1973. Dílo přináší nejen řadu dosud nezveřejněných dobových materiálů a textů (např. Manipulace ždanovovské linie v ČSR) a zcela nové informace o životě a díle Egona Hostovského, ale zároveň nabízí specifický pohled na osud moderního spisovatele v turbulencích dějin 20. století.
