uring the last election cycle, as we watched candidates rush to the microphone and attempt to say a few words in Spanish, it seemed we were at the beginning of a new political era.

Stories like Adelina Otero-Warren’s, however, once again remind us of the danger of forgeting.

An American suffragist, educator, and avant-garde politician, Otero-Warren was born in New Mexico in 1881, on her family’s hacienda - who belonged to the Hispanic elite. Thanks to her mother’s influence, an activist for social and educational advancement, Otero-Warren witnessed the first progressive generation in the United States.

In 1912, at the age of 26 and recently divorced, Adelina moved to New York.

She began her community work at Anne Morgan’s foster home and started her friendships with artists and writers such as Mary Austin, Witter Byner, Mamie Meadors, and Alice Henderson.

Once back in New Mexico after her mother’s death, Otero-Warren joined Alice Paul’s Congressional Union to campaign for women’s suffrage in the territory. The goal was to bring women up through the leadership ranks and sit them at the discussion tables, especially on the 19th Amendment and women’s suffrage.

This required someone who spoke Spanish and could garner support from the Spanish- and English-speaking communities, something Otero-Warren swiftly accomplished, working her way through the ranks of the Republican Party in the process. The party would eventually endorse her to run for the House of Representatives in 1922, two years after the federal amendment (that FEBRUARY 10 - 17, 2021

Otero-Warren received 466.5 votes to incumbent Nestor Montoya’s 99.5 and became the first Latina to run for Congress.

However, when it came time to face Democrat John Morrow, Adelina fell behind by 10,000 votes and decided to turn her efforts toward educational leadership and public health in New Mexico.

Nearly 100 years later, another Latina accomplished Otero-Warren’s goal.

Teresa Leger Fernandez became the first Latina to represent New Mexico’s third congressional district on November 3, 2020, after defeating Republican nominee Alexis Johnson. She took office on January 3, 2021. “(Adelina O t e r o - Wa r ren) didn’t win, but a h u n d r e d years later, I won in this district,” Leger Fernandez told our writer Ericka Conant in the story beginning on page 16. “That means I have an awesome responsibility (...) to truly reflect and represent my district.”

Leger Fernandez’s story is not only a long-overdue victory but also evidence that it took nearly a century for the struggle of early suffragettes and grassroots movements for fair community representation to finally break down barriers and begin to bear fruit. z

Sin embargo, historias como la de Adelina Otero-Warren nos hacen reconocer nuevamente el peligro de la desmemoria.

Sufragista, educadora y política vanguardista estadounidense, Otero-Warren nació en Nuevo México en 1881, en la hacienda de su familia perteneciente a la élite hispana.

Gracias a la influencia de su madre, activista en favor de los avances sociales y educativos, Otero-Warren fue testigo de la primera verdadera generación progresista en Estados Unidos.

OVID-19 has dramatically impacted the economy and working women have experienced more than their fair share of economic losses for two main reasons: First, the industries that employ more women — like retail, healthcare, and hospitality — were hit very hard by the pandemic. Second, child care centers and schools’ mass closures have forced many women to leave the workforce to care for their kids.

Between February and August, mothers of children 12 years and younger lost 2.2 million jobs, compared to the 870,000 jobs lost by fathers. According to a report from the Dallas Federal Reserve, these losses are even worse for women of color, as 6.4% of Black mothers have left the workforce, compared to only 2.4% of white mothers.

ENGLISH mericans of Latino descent continue to build the American Dream, and there is plenty of evidence to

prove it.

“We are not only building it; we have laid the foundations of the American Dream. We are believers, we have strong values,” says Claudia Romo Edelman, founder, and president of We Are All Human Foundation.

She offers credible statistics to prove it.

Millennial Latinos, for instance, have doubled their degrees from 2000 to 2018 in 162% compared to 40% for Non-Latinos, according to data provided by We Are All Human.

“This shows that young Latinos are becoming more established, will create new families, start businesses, experience social mobility, and contribute to the economy’s growth,” Romo Edelman said.

For instance, from April to June 2020, Latino Labor Force Participation soared at a rate more than double that of Non-Latinos. Likewise, the Hispanic Buying Power scales to 1.7 trillion dollars.

This, as Romo says, will play a key role in the economy’s recovery: “Everyone needs to get on the train. Invest in us, attract us as clients, as consumers. Show that you care about Hispanics.”

But the Latinx community also has its own growing business ecosystem: Eight of 10 new businesses formed were Latino owned. According to a study by the Stanford Graduate School of Business, if those businesses grew as fast as the U.S. average, they could add $1.4 trillion to the U.S. economy.

They tend to remain smaller than white-owned businesses, with average revenues of 1,2 million dollars per year for Latino-owned employee firms (with paid employees), compared to 2,3 million dollars for Non-Latino owned firms.

“We outpace all others in business formation and there is a huge opportunity to scale up and grow.

If we grow, everyone grows,” she says.

There is another area with consistent growth indicators for Latinos. For the 5th consecutive year, they are the only group increasing their homeownership: 66% of new homes are being bought by Latinos, despite the fact that their median age (28) affects credit scores, income, and household wealth.

Romo Eldeman remarks that, despite the challenges we still need to overcome, the positive facts are a reminder that “we need to celebrate Latino accomplishments and realize that the stereotypes are no longer true.” z

ast week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced during the 117th Congress that Texas Representative Veronica Escobar would join the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.

The Select Committee Chair, Rep. Kathy Castor, backed up the appointment and feels confident that Escobar’s vision for clean energy innovation will expand opportunities for communities of color, create new jobs and diminish pollution.

“Her leadership is vital to ensuring our military has the tools necessary to protect America, and her push for solar energy research and development will benefit workers in Texas and across the country,” Castor said in a statement.

Escobar’s appointment is even more vital given the past four years of

Between 2017 and 2019, there were 44 unique extreme weather and climate events with damages that cost the U.S

The former administration also actively discredited the effects of climate change and further contributed to the damage by loosening requirements for polluters emitting greenhouse gases.

Although these circumstances are hazardous for all Americans, Black and Latino Americans bear a significantly larger burden of air pollution, according to new research from a team led by the University of Washington and the University of Minnesota.

These findings, published in March 2019 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, exposed that non-Hispanic white Americans are mainly generating the air pollution experienced by Black and Hispanic Americans.

The research demonstrated for the first time the clear racial gap between who creates air pollution and who breathes it.

he Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) is taking the lead in the push to include legal protections for undocumented essential workers in an upcoming COVID-19 relief reconciliation package.

The CHC is part of 100 members of Congress who are calling for the inclusion of immigrant essential workers, Dreamers, DACA recipients, and those with Temporary Protected Status in the upcoming package, arguing that many are essential workers who have helped keep the country on its feet, and are critical for recovery.

House Democrats are proceeding with the COVID relief package, which has yet to be approved by the Speaker or Majority lead. The bill could require them to use “reconciliation” to advance it in the Senate without Republican support.

ver the past few weeks, the scandal of a small group of amateur investors beating Wall Street at its own game has caused panic on digital platforms.

Prominent among them is RobinHood, a U.S. financial services firm based in Menlo Park, California, that made its fortune through its app — from interest earned on client cash balances, the sale of order information to high-frequency traders, and margin loans.

However, the fallout from Robinhood’s interference in allowing its users to trade freely after they gave Wall Street a run for its money will likely come with legal consequences.

“This is unacceptable,” wrote Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortéz (AOC), who holds an Economics degree from Boston University, on her Twitter account.

“We now need to know more about Robinhood’s decision to block retail investors from purchasing stock while hedge funds are freely able to trade the stock as they see fit. As a member of the Financial Services Cmte, I’d support a hearing if necessary,” she wrote.

The online trading platform has moved to restrict trading in GameStop, AMC, and other stocks that have soared due to aggressive buying by smaller retail investors and many novices whose attention was peaked in Reddit threads.

GameStop’s stock has soared from below $20 earlier this January to more than $400 on the morning of Jan. 28 as an army of investors from Reddit, Dis-

Since then, #HoldTheLine has become a movement, with multiple users across the platforms above saying they won’t sell.

But Robinhood’s interference could seriously hurt users.

ne hundred years ago, Adeline Otero, a suffragist from New Mexico, was the first Latina to run for Congress.

After successfully lobbying to get New Mexico to vote in favor of the 19th Amendment, allowing women to exercise their right to vote, she ran for Congress in her district.

Otero didn’t win, but 100 years later Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez did. She is the first Latina to represent her northern New Mexico District in Congress.

“She didn’t win, but 100 years later, I won in this district, and I’m representing Northern New Mexico. And what it means is I have an awesome responsibility — I use that word because it’s important — I have an awesome responsibility to truly reflect and represent my district,” said Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez in a recent interview with AL DÍA. As she looked outside her window at snowcapped mountains, she spoke about her district’s beauty but also about what it needed. “My district is beautiful but also has a lot of poverty,” she said.

The poverty she’s spent her life trying to combat — whether through decades of work at her social impact law firm, as she calls it, or fighting voter suppression among Native Americans and Latinos in New Mexico.

DECADES OF DEDICATION

“It’s only if we have that infrastructure in those businesses that our communities can thrive,” Leger Fernandez said, “From building schools to businesses and rural health clinics, to broadband.”

It’s efforts like these that have helped New Mexico rank 17th in the nation’s infrastructure, yet the state ranks 48th in opportunity.

“It means I need to do that. I must create opportunities in this beautiful place I call home for my incredibly diverse communities.”

Leger Fernandez said she’s also worked on cultural preservation so that the stories of historical figures such as Adeline Otero aren’t forgotten. For her, we must remember our history and tell our stories.

This she learned from her parents.

“Ella no ganó, pero 100 años después, yo gané en este distrito y estoy representando al norte de Nuevo México. Y lo que significa es que tengo una gran responsabilidad -uso esa palabra porque es importante- tengo una gran responsabilidad de reflejar y representar verdaderamente a mi distrito”, dijo la diputada Teresa Leger Fernández en una reciente entrevista con AL DÍA. Mientras miraba por su ventana las montañas nevadas, habló de la belleza de su distrito, pero también de lo que necesita. “Mi distrito es hermoso, pero también tiene mucha pobreza”, dijo.

La pobreza que ella ha pasado su vida tratando de combatir - ya sea a través de décadas de trabajo en su bufete de abogados de impacto social, como ella lo llama, o la lucha contra la supresión de los votantes entre los nativos americanos y los latinos en Nuevo México.

THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT

“I represent a majority district of Latinos and Native Americans, but then we have every other diversity of ethnicity — Black Americans, Asian— just a wonderful mix [...] We celebrate Native American Feast Days and Latino Fiestas, and Rodeos, you know. We do it all here,” said Leger Fernandez.

While diverse, each community ex-

pects her to represent them on the critical issues at the Capitol.

Largely, they’re the same issues that are important to Latino communities across the country, like healthcare, immigration, and economic opportunity.

“In many ways, many of our issues overlap. And that’s what they expect me to do, is represent them with deep knowledge of these communities, because I have worked for 30 years making things happen in these communities, so I need to take that knowledge and take it to D.C,” she said.

NEW MEXICO LATINOS PROVE THEIR CLOUT

In 2020 especially, New Mexico’s Latinx politicians proved to be key players in the legislative cycle. From former Rep. Xochitl Torres-Small’s Great American Outdoor’s Act to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s COVID-19 response and

subsequent consideration in President Joe Biden’s cabinet.

Former Rep. Ben Ray Luján also made headlines when he ran for the Senate — and won — and Leger Fernandez herself became the first Latina to represent her district.

Then, in mid-December, Rep. Deb Haaland put New Mexico in the spotlight again after Biden selected her to run the Interior Department.

“It is wonderful to be joined by such a diverse leadership. What it does is it goes back to the fact that New Mexico has been building its Latino, Indigenous, Latina leadership. And now it’s culminated,” Leger Fernandez said.

It’s no doubt Rep. Leger Fernandez’s first month was historic — for many reasons. With a range of emotions, she described these to AL DÍA. “So getting sworn-in was quite joyous and a moment where you realize that you had truly this awesome responsibility to represent your communities, and that was real,” she said. “When this sinks in, it is truly your turning point, right? Where you walked over that threshold, you are now in that place of responsibility.”

But once past that threshold, she witnessed the unthinkable at the Capitol.

“A few days later, we had the insurrection, and that emotion — the strongest emotion there was of anger. But anger in the way a momma bear would be angry if her baby cubs were attacked,” she said.

She said it was a love for democracy that made her feel this way — as imperfect as it is — because those who stormed the Capitol were white supremacists who had been egged on by former President Donald Trump, who had been attacking Latinx immigrants since he assumed office.

“Then we got to the impeachment, and that was solemn because that was recognizing that we could not allow a president to incite insurrection and let it stand. That we can not begin to heal and to do the important work that this nation needs if we say it doesn’t matter,” she said.

Then came the following Wednesday — Inauguration Day. “It was pure joy and relief,” Leger Fernandez said.“I was whistling, I was doing the kind of screams and yells that they do in some of the communities here which are very high pitched, because I felt like my clapping, and my cries of happiness and joy, that I needed to represent millions,

and thousands because they couldn’t be in that Mall. So I was trying to channel everybody’s joy and excitement.”

PEOPLE OF THE LAND

The joy of her people and the love of their land in New Mexico is what Leger Fernandez has been advocating for not only in terms of infrastructure and opportunity but also for its future well-being.

“Agua es vida here,” she said. “Water is life here.”

However, she noted that if the nation doesn’t adequately address climate change, New Mexico will not be a place where her people can live.

It’s a fragile state with a fragile ecology.

“And that takes collective action. It takes us all working together,” she said.

That collective effort she believes must go towards fighting climate change.

If left unchecked, it will not only economically hurt people of color the most but also health-wise.

“Those hurt most right now are our Latino and BIPOC communities who are working under the shadow of the fossil fuel industry who have labored under the clouds of pesticide,” said Leger Fernandez.

She referenced bills she will be taking up as her term proceeds, ranging from tackling the methane being spewed into

the air and building the renewable energy grid.

EQUITY ON DAY ONE

Of course, as most politicians amid the health crisis, addressing the pandemic and its numerous economic fallouts is the first order of duty.

“Democracy is the key to getting all of the rest of this stuff done.”

“But the manner in which we address them has to be with social justice and economic equity and fixing the structural problems at its core,” Leger Fernandez added.

Besides that,

the congresswoman listed more immediate actions she’s working on, including something she’s worked on her whole life.

“I am a co-sponsor of H.R. 1. It’s called the For the People Act. It’s electoral campaign finance reform. It’s been something I’ve worked on for my entire life. I’m on the committee that will be working on that bill; I am going to be talking about that everywhere because Democracy is the key to getting all of the rest of this stuff done,” she said.

The bill would be a win for campaign finance reform and increasing access and participation in the electoral system.

As she explained the ins and outs of that bill, Rep. Leger Fernandez smiled.

Esto lo aprendió de sus padres.

Ellos fueron pioneros de la educación bilingüe y redactaron la ley que exigía que las lenguas indígenas como el navajo y el apache, además del español, se enseñaran en las escuelas para que no fueran olvidadas por las generaciones futuras.

“Porque si pierdes tu lengua, empiezas a perder un poquito de tu herencia, un poquito de tu cultura, y un poquito de tu identidad. Y reconocieron que tener una base cultural fuerte te ayuda a ser fuerte como comunidad”, dijo.

LA TIERRA DEL ENCANTO

“Represento a un distrito mayoritariamente de latinos y nativos americanos, pero luego tenemos toda la diversidad de

etnias -negros americanos, asiáticos-, una mezcla maravillosa [...] Celebramos días de fiesta de los nativos americanos y fiestas latinas, y rodeos, ya sabes. Aquí lo hacemos todo”, dijo Leger Fernández.

Aunque son diversas, cada comunidad espera que ella les represente en los temas que les son importantes en el Capitolio.

En gran medida, son los mismos temas que son importantes para las comunidades latinas de todo el país, como la asistencia sanitaria, la inmigración y las oportunidades económicas.

“En muchos sentidos, muchos de nuestros problemas coinciden. Y eso es lo que esperan que haga, es representarlos con un profundo conocimiento de estas comunidades, porque he trabajado durante 30 años haciendo que las cosas suce-

LOS LATINOS DE NUEVO MÉXICO DEMUESTRAN SU INFLUENCIA

Especialmente en 2020, los políticos latinos de Nuevo México demostraron ser actores clave en el ciclo legislativo. Desde la ley Great American Outdoor’s Act de la ex congresista Xochitl Torres-Small hasta la respuesta de la gobernadora Michelle Luján Grisham al COVID-19 y su posterior consideración en el gabinete del presidente Joe Biden.

Si la candidatura no es el objetivo, Leger Fernández dijo que el mero hecho de participar en el proceso político es una victoria para las comunidades subrepresentadas.

UN MES LLENO DE HISTORIA

No cabe duda de que el primer mes de la diputada Leger Fernández ha sido histórico, por muchas razones. Un abanico de emociones que describió a AL DÍA. “Jurar el cargo fue bastante alegre y un momento en el que te das cuenta de que realmente tienes esta impresionante responsabilidad de representar a tus comunidades y eso fue real”, dijo. “Cuando esto se hunde, es realmente tu punto de inflexión, ¿verdad? Pero una vez superado ese umbral, fue testigo de lo impensable en el Capitolio.

“Unos días más tarde, tuvimos la insurrección, y esa emoción - la emoción más fuerte que había era de ira. Pero la rabia es como la que sentiría una mamá osa si sus crías fueran atacadas”, dijo.

LA GENTE DE LA TIERRA

La alegría de su gente y el amor por su tierra en Nuevo México es lo que Leger Fernández ha defendido no sólo en términos de infraestructura y oportunidades, sino también para su futuro bienestar.

“El agua es vida aquí”, dijo.

Sin embargo, señaló que si la nación no aborda adecuadamente el cambio climático, Nuevo México no será un lugar en el que su gente pueda vivir.

Es un estado frágil con una ecología frágil.

“Y eso requiere una acción colectiva.

Hace falta que todos trabajemos juntos”, dijo.

Ese esfuerzo colectivo, en su opinión, debe dirigirse a la lucha contra el cambio climático. Si no se controla, no sólo perjudicará económicamente a la gente de color, sino también a la salud.

“Los más perjudicados ahora mismo son nuestras comunidades latinas y BIPOC, que trabajan bajo la sombra de la industria de los combustibles fósiles y que

han trabajado bajo las nubes de los pesticidas”, dijo Leger Fernández.

Se refirió a los proyectos de ley que abordará a lo largo de su mandato, que van desde la lucha contra el metano que se arroja al aire hasta la construcción de la red de energía renovable.

EQUIDAD EN EL PRIMER DÍA

Por supuesto, como la mayoría de los políticos en medio de la crisis sanitaria, hacer frente a la pandemia y a sus múltiples consecuencias económicas es la primera orden del día.

“Pero la forma de abordarlos tiene que ser con justicia social y equidad económica y arreglando los problemas estructurales de fondo”, añadió Leger Fernández.

acciones más inmediatas en las que está trabajando, incluyendo algo en lo que ha trabajado toda su vida.

“Soy copatrocinadora de la ley H.R. 1.

Se llama For the People Act. Es la reforma de la financiación de las campañas electorales. Es algo en lo que he trabajado toda mi vida. Estoy en el comité que trabajará en ese proyecto de ley, voy a estar hablando de eso en todas partes, porque la democracia es la clave para conseguir todo esto”, dijo.

El proyecto de ley supondría una victoria para la reforma de la financiación de las campañas y para aumentar el acceso y la participación en el sistema electoral.

fter publishing The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao — a novel that delves into the cruel Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic — Junot Díaz said there are dark regions of the past that a writer cannot reach through realism.

Perhaps for this very reason, the narrator uses the gaze of a child immersed in a tragedy barely understandable at a young age to fill in some of the gaps of a horror story under the spell of fantasy.

Morales’ testimony is real. It happened when he was 28 years old and he was then forced to flee Chile in desperation.

“My first intention was to write a John Le Carré-like spy story, but books are written in spite of one,” the author explained to El País. “Doing interviews and researching in archives I found such delicate material that I couldn’t use fiction.”

One of the dilemmas of dictatorships is how a man can wake up next to his wife, kiss his children on the forehead, be a good father and a good neighbor, and then leave his house and shoot, electrocute or execute another person.

In fact, Va l e n z u e l a Morales found it unbearable.

That was his wake-up call.

He “failed to assimilate cruelty as something natural and inevitable,” Fernandez said. He was in that phantasmagoric limbo of The Twilight Zone, in “that gray area where pain coexists with daily life.”

Clandestine prisons in residential neighborhoods, a prisoner who in his delirium believes a UFO has come to save him, a father who is arrested while taking his children to school, or a child who changes his name and life and witnesses a massacre.

There are many pieces that make up this liminal space, this ordinary yet extraordinary horror that confronts us with ourselves on every page.

ENGLISH n his 27th birthday, Maluma released #7DJ as a celebration of his success and fatherhood and the tribute album has quickly risen up the

charts.

The album revolves around seven days in Jamaica and the Latino star premiered the album and video, in which he blends the land and motherhood in an organic fashon.

In this project Maluma wanted to work with another renowned Colombian artist of a very different nature, but with whom he has become friends: Federico Uribe.

Maluma was born in Medellin in 1994 and Uribe in Bogota in 1962. Now both reside in Miami and, despite the apparent age gap, there are several elements that connect them and that they explored on the album cover and in an exhibition in Miami.

If in #7DJ Maluma intended a return to his roots, which drift towards reggae with Ziggy Marley and Charly Black, Uribe certainly captures this on the cover with tones that suggest new instruments (trumpets and saxophones) and but the technique of using garbage.

Even though arte povera was patented in Italy, it is above all known for the imagination with which Latino artists such as Armando Reverón and Jannis Kounellis use it to illustrate the realities of South America.

Alrededor del concepto de los siete días en Jamaica la estrella latina lanzaba disco y vídeo en el que relaciona la tierra y la maternidad de un modo orgánico.

En este despegue Maluma ha querido estar acompañado de otro reconocido artista colombiano de índole bien distinta pero con el que ha trabado amistad: Federico Uribe. Maluma nació en Medellín en 1994 y Federico Uribe en Bogotá en 1962. usic is to cinema what cinema is to life. It endows it with nuances and is often at the forefront of social change.

In the golden decade of the 1960s, in the midst of the civil rights struggle, the Rhode Island-born musician Wendy Carlos had a visionary idea: that synthesizers, which musicians had begun to use as mere noise emitters, should become instruments in their own right, and could even be used in classical music.

Why should these technological devices be any less important than pianos or organs, Wendy wondered? Her time at the Columbia-Princeton Music Center was pivotal, as was her vision of the affinities between physics and musical composition.

Determined to prove her idea, Wendy started working on a new instrument with the help of another pioneer: Robert Moog, the founder of electronic music and the man who patented the first modular synthesizer.

But the artist did much more than that. She began to experiment with various genres such as rock or jazz until she reached the scores of Johann Sebastian Bach himself.

After more than five months of work, in 1968, Wendy managed to produce a radical album, Switched-onBach, which was an unexpected success and number one on Billboard for more than two years.

Wendy also ventured into Handel and other classics, becoming the scourge of the purists. But there was someone else revolutionizing another of the great arts that saw a perfect complement in her music.

Upon learning that director Stanley Kubrick was shooting the film adaptation of the novel, Carlos contacted him through his agent, and just like that... magic happened.

The filmmaker asked her to travel to Europe and join the crew, which she did.

Some of her compositions ended up being part of the film, but not all of them. The director finally opted for the classic version of some songs and Carlos felt a bit frustrated with the experience.

Later, the composer would have the opportunity to make up for it and make the soundtracks of The Shining and Tron in their entirety. She even record a children's album with Weird Al Yankovic and another entitled Beauty and the Beast, where she would experiment with an alternative scale of notes.

But she still had to live her own "personal metamorphosis."

Around 1972, the artist disappeared from the public scene. Seven years of silence passed in which she transitioned into a biological woman through sex reassignment surgery.

Wendy was afraid of the repercussions that embracing her true trans identity could have on her career, but she decided to take a step forward — or rather, a leap.

In 1979, the iconic Playboy magazine opened its issue with an interview in which she revealed herself as a transgender woman and explained in detail all the internal contradictions and insecurities she faced.

One was a nervous breakdown she suffered just before being operated on, years ago, when she had to appear in front of the public and covering her long hair.

Although now we still have to deal with controversies and senseless quarrels among a certain wing of feminism known as terf (trans-exclusionary radical feminism), some of her second-wave godmothers had started a fierce criticism of transgender people comparing sex reassignment to the rape of women.

Cities such as Chicago, Washington, and New York have been painted white thanks to what specialists call disturbances of the upper atmosphere phenomenon or polar vortex. This year, in particular, its effects have persisted for an unusually long time.

In the meantime, and in the midst of the restrictions of a pandemic, American citizens seemed to enjoy the natural beauty and scenery, like those who forget their worries in a blinding white.

he city’s public health department sets the COVID-19 vaccination distribution plan in Philadelphia under the federal Center for Disease Control guidance.

There is currently not enough supply to vaccinate every person that wants it. As a result, the plan sets a priority for the people who are most likely to be exposed to the COVID-19 virus through their work or living situation and those at the highest risk of severe symptoms or mortality. The phases go from 1A being the most critical to 2 being the general adult population not covered during the other stages.

The city is currently at stage 1B of the vaccination plan. This stage, which started on January 19, includes first responders and those that work in food distribution. Individuals seventy-five years of age or older and those with high-risk medical conditions are also covered.

It is also asking for paid family leave, pay equity, and affordable childcare — issues that already existed but were exacerbated by the pandemic.

This “Marshall Plan for Moms” refers to the Marshall Plan of 1948 that gave European countries financial support following World War II. Celebrity moms who support the plan include Eva Longoria Bastón, Gabrielle Union, Amber Tamblyn, Julianne Moore, Amy Schumer, Alyssa Milano, Connie Britton, and Charlize Theron.

Milano and Tamblyn both tweeted in support of the plan on Jan. 26, writing, “we are in a national crisis, and moms are leaving the workforce in droves. We need to support them.”

Saujani told The Daily Briefing earlier this month that in eight out of 10 families, homeschool children’s responsibility falls to women.

“Many women are downsizing their hours; they’re quitting their jobs in entirety and going on food stamps or moving in with their parents or taking on the night shift,” she explained to host Dana Perino. “It is causing huge economic consequences for women.”

In an op-ed for The Hill, Saujani wrote about what she has learned through her work with Girls Who Code.

“Every day, I log my son onto Zoomschool and see other women helping their own toddlers find the mute button. Every day I log onto video calls and see exhaust-

ed moms with infants in their laps, or I get a call from a panicked mom — for instance, in recent weeks, about how to care for her daughter after local schools gave parents only a few hours’ notice of another maddening and confusing closure,” she said.

Many mothers are at their breaking point and need financial support to continue the valuable work they do, rest and recover, and stimulate the economy. Aid for them would benefit everyone.

“It will give women the support they need so they can, eventually, get back to work, and it will send a hugely important signal to little girls and young women across the country: that our society values the contributions of women, and that their careers, dreams, and lives will not be taken for granted,” Saujani said. z

levels of air pollution directly correlate to a person’s likelihood of losing their life to COVID-19. Seventy-one percent of the Black population and 80% of Latinos reside in areas that violate federal air pollution regulations, contributing even more to the health disparities faced by communities of color throughout the pandemic.

These findings perfectly illustrate what is known as environmental racism, a term coined by the academic Robert Bullard.

Environmental racism refers to “policies, practices, or directives that differentially affect or disadvantage (whether

intentionally or unintentionally) individuals, groups or communities based on race or color.”

Diversity is essential in all areas of government, but when it comes to climate justice, it’s crucial for people of color to hold power.

“I am thankful to Speaker Pelosi and Chair Castor for the opportunity to serve in the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis,” Escobar said. “I stand ready to work on bold and innovative environmental policies that benefit El Paso and communities across the country, combat the threat of climate change, and protect our planet for future generations.” z
