Acar washing facility in the city of Donna, Texas, where many of the relatives of Vanessa Guillen, the 20-year-old soldier who mysteriously disappeared last April 22 from Fort Hood in Killeen, has become the canvas for a huge portrait of the young woman with two waving flags, the Mexican and the American.

This was the way in which the muralist of the Alamo, Alexander Gonzalez, contributed to the search for the missing woman, which has raised an enormous controversy since many believe that there is something rather murky and the progress of the investigation of the case has been highly criticized.

Gonzalez painted the mural with only $40 and about 400 miles south of where the woman was last seen. He told The Monitor that he felt he had to do

something after seeing Guillen's mother speak on television and ask for justice for her daughter and everyone's help in finding her.

“Days ago, I saw Vanessa's mother speak out with courage, with every beat of her heart,” the artist said. “She was crying, and I thought, 'you have to do this. You have to help.”

After much searching, Gonzalez found the best place in the entire Rio Grande Valley to paint his mural, the Hernandez Car Wash in Donna. A stroke of luck that can only be explained as fate, since a large part of the soldier's family lives there and he met them all during a couple of days he was working on this huge and beautiful tribute.

In fact, family members and neighbors –as well as the police department itself and the City Commission– showed their support and collaboration.

Un lavadero de autos en la ciudad de Donna, Texas, donde residen muchos de los familiares de Vanessa Guillén, la soldado de 20 años que desapareció misteriosamente el pasado 22 abril de Fort Hood, en Killeen, se ha convertido en el lienzo de un enorme retrato de la joven con dos ondeantes banderas, la de México y la de Estados Unidos.

Esta fue la forma en que el muralista del Álamo Alexander González aportó su granito de arena a la búsqueda de la mujer desaparecida, que ha levantando una enorme polémica, ya que muchos creen que hay algo bastante turbio y los progresos de la investigación del caso han sido muy criticados.

González pintó el mural con apenas 40 dólares y a unas 400 millas al sud de dónde la mujer fue vista por última vez. Según le contó a The Monitor, el artista sintió que debía hacer algo tras ver a la madre de Guillén hablar en la televisión y pedir justicia para su hija y la ayuda de todos para encontrarla.

“Hace días, vi que la mamá de Vanessa se puso a decir todo con valentía, con cada latido de su corazón”, dijo el artista. “Ella estaba llorando, y yo pensé: 'tienes que hacer esto'. Tienes que ayudar”.

Tras mucho buscar, González encontró el mejor lugar en todo el Valle del Río Grande para pintar su mural, el lavadero de autos Hernández, en Donna. Un golpe de suerte que sólo puede explicarse como cosa del destino, ya que gran parte de la familia de la soldado reside allí y a todos los conoció durante el par de días que estuvo trabajando en esta enorme y bella señal.

De hecho, tanto familiares y vecinos como el propio departamento de Policía y la Comisión de la Ciudad mostraron su apoyo y colaboración.

Guillen, a Houston native, was last seen on April 22 at Fort Hood.

“I want to thank the community for helping me,” Gonzalez said. "Without them, I would never have finished."

The muralist hopes that this work will further the search for Guillén and bring awareness to the community.

“I don't want to be the center of attention," he concluded. "I want Vanessa to be the center of attention. Keep looking for her. Right now... Hopefully, they will find her and justice will be served. That's all I want.”

WHERE'S VANESSA GUILLEN?

Something still smells very bad about Vanessa Guillen's disappearance. Neither her family nor her neighbors can explain how the young woman can still be missing after two months and are demanding justice and an independent investigation.

Guillen, a Houston native, was last seen on April 22 at Fort Hood. She had been in a gun room where the police found her ID card, wallet, and keys to her car and apartment.

Although the soldier's commander, Colonel Ralph Overland, has promised to bring her back home and showed the relatives the parking lot where she was last seen, little or nothing is known about her.

Meanwhile, Democrat Sylvia Garcia said Tuesday that Guillen sent a text message to her supervisor with the serial number of a gun she was ordered to check on April 22. For the lawyer, the message is "disturbing" and she believes it could have been sent by someone else.

Guillen is not the only member of Fort Hood to have disappeared. Last Friday, the body of Gregory Scott Morales, 24, was found in a camp in Killeen.

La última vez que se vio a Guillén, nativa de Houston, fue un 22 de abril en Fort Hood.

“Quiero agradecer a la comunidad por ayudarme", declaró González. "Sin ellos, nunca habría terminado”.

El muralista espera que esta obra impulse la búsqueda de Guillén y traiga conciencia a la comunidad.

“No quiero ser el centro de atención”, concluyó. “Quiero que Vanessa sea el centro de atención. Sigan buscándola. Ahora mismo... Con suerte, la encontrarán y se hará justicia. Eso es todo lo que quiero”.

¿DÓNDE ESTÁ VANESSA GUILLÉN?

Algo sigue oliendo muy mal en la desaparición de Vanessa Guillén. Ni familiares ni vecinos se explican cómo la joven puede seguir desaparecida tras dos meses y exigen justicia y una investigación independiente.

La última vez que se vio a Guillén, nativa de Houston, fue un 22 de abril en Fort Hood. Había estado en una armería y allí fue donde la Policía encontró su tarjeta de identificación, la cartera y las llaves de su coche y del apartamento.

Aunque el comandante de la soldado, el coronel Ralph Overland, se ha comprometido a traerla de vuelta a casa y mostró a los familiares el aparcamiento donde fue vista por última vez, poco o nada se sabe de ella.

Por su parte, la demócrata Sylvia García declaró el pasado martes que Guillén envió un mensaje de texto a su supervisor con el número de serie de un arma que se le encargó revisar ese mismo 22 de abril. Para la abogada, el mensaje es “inquietante” y cree que pudo enviarlo otra persona.

Guillén no es el único miembro de Fort Hood en haber desaparecido. El pasado viernes se encontró el cuerpo de Gregory Scott Morales, de 24 años, en un campo de Killeen.
