onald Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric continues to be used by candidates for public office. That footprint still remains in Pennsylvania’s 10th District by Scott Perry, with racist and xenophobic positions that come to the surface even more at election time. In that scenario is Councilmember Shamaine Daniels, a Venezuelan lawyer who has lived in the United States since she was 13 years old. “It’s not just me and my family, I’ve talked to other immigrant groups, and we all have post-traumatic stress because of the experiences we lived in our countries. To see someone purposely wanting the structures we left is terrible, that’s not America”, she says. Her life and purpose are the focus of this AL DÍA edition. Who is Shamaine Daniels? She is the Latina running against Congressmember Scott Perry for his seat in Congress. She is the first Latina to serve on the Harrisburg City Council and won the Democratic primaries for Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District. With her family, she came to Philadelphia in 1991, but faced discrimination from neighbors. “They told us to go back the way we came. They had their children throw rocks at our house, and it was a nightmare from there”, she recalls. She became lawyer at the University of Cincinnati and has worked for immigrant rights ever since. In Harrisburg she worked for the Community Justice Project. She then went into politics. In 2011 she ran and got 75 % of the votes in the city of Harrisburg. “The Democrats just wasted their money, but people were surprised at how well I did because I didn’t know anyone”, Daniels said. In 2013 she ran for city council, becoming the first Latina to serve on Harrisburg’s governing body. Now the challenge is to win the seat that Perry has held for years, and Daniels is betting on the populations that candidates do not consider. Harrisburg is mostly African-American (51 %) and 23 % Hispanic. In York, Hispanics are the largest non-white population (33 %), followed by African-Americans (26 %). She believes issues such as abortion and gun control can be important in motivating voters. “My job is to

En ese escenario está la concejal Shamaine Daniels, abogada venezolana que vive en Estados Unidos desde que tenía 13 años. “No solo somos mi familia y yo, he hablado con otros grupos de inmigrantes, y todos tenemos estrés postraumático por las experiencias que vivimos en nuestros países. Ver que alguien quiere a propósito las estructuras que dejamos es terrible, eso no es Estados Unidos”, cuenta. Su vida y sus propósitos son el tema central de esta edición de AL DÍA. ¿Quién es Shamaine Daniels? Es la latina que compite con el diputado Scott Perry por su escaño en el Congreso. Es la primera latina que forma parte del Ayuntamiento de Harrisburg y ganó las primarias demócratas para el 10º Distrito del Congreso de Pensilvania. En el 2011 se postuló y obtuvo el 75% de los votos en la ciudad de Harrisburg. “Los demócratas sólo desperdiciaron su dinero, pero la gente se sorprendió de lo bien que me fue porque no conocía a nadie”, dijo. En el 2013 se presentó como candidata al ayuntamiento, convirtiéndose en la primera latina en formar parte del órgano de gobierno de Harrisburg. Ahora el reto es ganar el escaño que por años ha tenido Perry y Daniels les apuesta a las poblaciones que los candidatos poco tienen en cuenta. Harrisburg es mayoritariamente afroamericana (51%) y tiene el 23% de hispanos. En York, los hispanos son la mayor población no blanca (33%) y le siguen los afroamericanos (26 %). Considera que temas como el aborto y el control de las armas pueden ser importantes para motivar a los votantes.
