EL ESPECTADOR COLOMBIA THE POISON THAT RUNS THROUGH THE BLOOD OF THE UNITED STATES

Commentator Gonzalo Mallarino Flórez asked himself this May 28th: “What is the origin of this destructive and poisoned rage?”, referring to Salvador Ramos, who murdered 19 children and 2 teachers. Later on, he addresses society in the United States: “What is this poison that runs through the blood of this nation? [...] It has everything, or almost everything, material, why are they so sick in the spiritual? [...] Almost like no other nation, the United States opened its arms and received millions and millions of immigrants from all over the world, for decades and decades. [...] What does a free and unfalsifi ed mind like Noam Chomsky’s think, now in the painful present? What does a decent and upright woman like Judge Ketanji Jackson think? To people like these I would appeal for much needed answers. It cannot be the only thing this country has, in the face of these wounds [...] is the lobby of the arms manufacturers and the systematic backing of Republican congressmen.

El comentarista Gonzalo Mallarino Flórez se preguntó este 28 de mayo: “¿Cuál es el origen de esa rabia destructiva y envenenada?”, al referirse a Salvador Ramos, quien asesinó a 19 niños y a dos profesoras. Más adelante se ocupa de la sociedad en Estados Unidos. “¿Qué es este veneno que corre por la sangre de esta nación? (…) Tiene todo, o casi todo, lo material, ¿por qué están tan enfermos en lo espiritual? (…) Casi como ninguna otra nación, los Estados Unidos abrieron los brazos y recibieron a millones y millones de inmigrantes del mundo entero, durante décadas y décadas. (…).¿Qué piensa, ahora en el presente doloroso, una mente libre y sin falsías como la de Noam Chomsky? ¿Qué piensa una mujer decente e íntegra como la jueza Ketanji Jackson? A personas como estas apelaría para saber las respuestas que tanto se necesitan. No puede ser que lo único que tenga ese país, delante de estas heridas (…) sea el lobby de los fabricantes de armas y el respaldo sistemático de los congresistas republicanos.

CLARÍN ARGENTINA THE USUAL IN THE MIDST OF A MASSACRE

John Carlin wrote the following comment: “Last week a kid turned 18 and treated himself to a pair of semi-automatic rifl es, AR model, plus 375 rounds. Normal, in Texas. You’re not allowed to drink alcohol until you’re 21 but going to a store and buy fi rearms at 18, no problem. Normal, too, that kids like him [...] seek to compensate for their fragile self-esteem by transforming themselves into avenging Rambos. “He then referred to the 19 murdered children and added: “The 18 year old boy entered the school with his two birthday presents and killed them all. [...] The reaction in the United States: the normal one. [...] Half the country is clamoring for the Government to impose restrictions for the sale of guns. Half the country responded indignantly that it has nothing to do with the constitutional right to hold arms [...]. Ted Cruz, Republican Senator from Texas and eternal candidate for the White House, complained about those who try to ‘politicize the tragedy’ and explained that the way to avoid a repetition is to recruit more armed people for the defense of schools”. John Carlin escribió un comentario que empezó así: “La semana pasada un chico cumplió 18 años y se regaló un par de rifl es semi automáticos, modelo AR, más 375 balas. Normal, en Texas. No se permite beber alcohol hasta los 21 pero ir a una tienda y comprar armas de fuego a los 18, ningún problema. Normal también que chicos como él (…) busquen compensar su frágil autoestima transformándose en Rambos vengadores”. Luego se refi rió a los 19 niños asesinados y agregó: “(…) el chico de 18 años entró en el colegio con sus dos regalos de cumpleaños y los mató a todos. (…) La reacción en Estados Unidos: la normal. (…) Medio país clamando que el gobierno imponga restricciones a la venta de armas. Medio país respondiendo indignado que no, que nada tiene que ver el derecho constitucional a poseer armas (…). Ted Cruz, senador republicano de Texas y candidato eterno a la Casa Blanca, se quejó de aquellos que intentan ‘politizar la tragedia’ y explicó que la manera de evitar que se repita es reclutar más personas armadas para la defensa de los colegios”.

EL COMERCIO PERU ONCE AGAIN, THE DAMNED GUNS

In the May 27th editorial, the Lima daily recalls that in almost 10 years in the United States “more than 900 attacks with fi rearms have been registered in U.S. schools. Whichever way you look at it, the data are unquestionable. According to the Gun Violence Archive, just in 2022, more than 7,600 people have been killed by fi rearms in the United States [...] and 214 mass shootings have been recorded [...] The North American country, moreover, is the only one on the planet that has more guns (393 million) in circulation than the population (330 million). In fact, it is estimated that the United States has almost half of the world’s total number of weapons in civilian hands (857 million) in its territory, despite being home to only 4 % of the world’s population [...]. Curiously, the only thing that has managed to stop the killing [...] in recent decades has been the COVID-19 pandemic. [...] American schoolchildren were more protected by staying home”.

En su editorial del 27 de mayo, el diario limeño recuerda que en casi 10 años en Estados Unidos “se han registrado más de 900 ataques con armas de fuego en colegios estadounidenses. Se mire por donde se mire, los datos son incuestionables. Según la asociación Gun Violence Archive, solo en lo que va del 2022 han muerto en Estados Unidos más de 7.600 personas por armas de fuego (…) y se han registrado 214 tiroteos masivos (…) El país norteamericano, además, es el único en el planeta que tiene más armas (393 millones) en circulación que población (330 millones). De hecho, se calcula que Estados Unidos posee casi la mitad del total de armas del mundo en manos de civiles (857 millones) en su territorio, a pesar de albergar solo al 4% de la población mundial (…). Curiosamente, lo único que ha logrado frenar las matanzas (…) en las últimas décadas ha sido la pandemia del COVID-19. (…) los escolares estadounidenses estuvieron más protegidos encerrados en sus casas”.

EL PERIÓDICO SPAIN A COUNTRY WILLING TO COEXIST WITH HORROR?

In one of its editorials, this Spanish newspaper questioned the position of the Republican Party regarding the massacres in educational centers in United States. “There are too many [...] to give credit to the laments of members of the Republican Party after the tragedy unleashed [...] at Rob Elementary School in Uvalde (Texas) [...]. The public outrage of the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, and the senator of the same state, Ted Cruz, seems more like an exercise in political cynicism because both are part of the rejection front that to date has made it impossible to limit and regulate gun ownership [...] opinion polls have long concluded that the majority of the population is in favor of establishing control mechanisms [...]. Basketball coach Steve Kerr is not exaggerating when he says that 50 Republican senators are holding Americans hostage, willing as they are to do everything in their power to ensure that nothing will change gun ownership”. En uno de sus editoriales, este diario español cuestionó la posición del Partido Republicano frente a las matanzas en centros educativos en Estados Unidos. “Son demasiadas (…) como para dar crédito a los lamentos de integrantes del Partido Republicano después de la tragedia desencadenada (…) en la escuela primaria de Uvalde (Texas) (…).Más parece un ejercicio de cinismo político la turbación pública del gobernador de Texas, Greg Abbott, y del senador del mismo estado Ted Cruz, porque ambos forman parte del frente de rechazo que hasta la fecha ha hecho imposible limitar y regular la posesión de armas. (…) las encuestas de opinión concluyen desde hace tiempo que la mayoría de la población es partidaria de establecer mecanismos de control (…). El entrenador de baloncesto Steve Kerr no ha exagerado al decir que 50 senadores republicanos tienen secuestrados a los estadounidenses, dispuestos como están a hacer cuanto esté en su mano para que nada cambie la posesión de armas”.
