Planning for this event is a lengthy process, but I have enjoyed serving our great Association with its goal of making its annual meeting a top-notch event. You’ll see the results of the incredible efforts our Convention Committee, Board Members, and staff, all of whom have invested time and effort to make this important gathering successful. I know we say this every year, but this year has topped all other meetings for sponsorship and attendance – as of this printing we expect well more than 450 paid attendees and guests this weekend. Many, if not all, are regular supporters of this Association and its many endeavors to make trucking great. Keynote Speaker

Be inspired, be informed! FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 8-11 A.M. – Emerald BALLROOM Rorke Denver We’re so very proud to present our keynote speaker, actor and author, and former United States Navy SEALs Commander Rorke Denver. He is best known for his role as Lieutenant Rorke in the 2012 film Act of Valor and appearances as team leader in the Fox Television series, American Grit. During his outstanding military career, Mr. Denver ran every phase of training for the U.S. Navy SEALs and led special-forces missions in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and many other international hot spots. After completing the SEALs’ legendary Basic Underwater Demolition program in 1999 (BUD/S Class 224), Denver began an action-filled 13-year career as a platoon commander and training leader with America’s premier special-operations force. As assistant officer in charge of BRAVO Platoon at SEAL Team THREE, he was deployed to the Central and South American Area of Operations (SOUTCOM), where his platoon was the alert SEAL team for maritime interdiction, hostage rescue, counter-insurgency and counter-narcotics. As SEAL officer aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard, Denver led his group’s response to a murderous uprising in the Ivory Coast nation of Liberia, launching advanced-force operations, conducting hydrographic beach reconnaissance and helping to get U.S. Marines safely ashore. At Special Boat Team TWELVE, he started the Maritime Capable Air Deployable Boat Detachment, which specialized in parachuting large assault boats from U.S. aircraft. In 2006, he was officer in charge of BRAVO Platoon of SEAL Team THREE in Iraq’s Al Anbar Province in one of the most combat-heavy deployments of any regular SEAL team since Vietnam. After returning to the U.S., Denver was appointed flag lieutenant to Admiral Joseph Maguire, commanding officer of Naval Special Warfare, traveling to Afghanistan and briefing Congress on SEAL operations. In 2009, he became First Phase officer of SEAL Basic Training including Hell Week, then rose to Basic Training officer. His New York Times bestseller, Damn Few: Making the Modern SEAL Warrior, takes you inside his personal story and the fascinating, demanding SEAL training program he now oversees. In his second book Worth Dying For: A Navy SEALs Call to a Nation, Rorke tackles the questions that have emerged about America’s past decade at war–from what makes a hero to why we fight and what it does to us. Denver is an honor graduate of the United States Army Ranger School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Syracuse University, where he was an All-American lacrosse player and captain of the varsity lacrosse team. He earned a Master’s Degree in Global Business Leadership from the University of San Diego.

Business Session + Membership Meetings Alabama Trucking Association Annual Membership Meeting Saturday morning’s Business Session will feature presentations from key ATA leaders to discuss topics affecting our Association and the entire trucking industry. Featured speaker for this session is current American Trucking Associations Chairman Dave Manning, president of the Nashville-based TCW, Inc., which was founded in 1948 as a small family-owned warehousing business serving the finished tobacco industry. Manning joined the company in 1985 and was instrumental in its growth from a single terminal to a diversified transportation enterprise with more than 600 employees and $80 million in annual revenue. Today, the company offers a network of diversified transportation services throughout the Southeast. Services include intermodal operations, consolidation and distribution, dedicated transportation, specialized transportation, and warehousing. Manning has served in many roles in the Tennessee Trucking Association, the American Trucking Associations, and the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA). He currently serves as Chairman of ATA, co-chair of the Truck Pac for TTA, and as the Treasurer of IANA. He also has served for more than a decade as a member on the 9-member Committee that administers the Uniform Intermodal Interchange Agreement, the standard interchange agreement for the intermodal industry. He graduated Summa cum Laude from Tennessee Technology University in Cookeville, Tenn. with a BS in Business Management. He married his junior high school sweetheart, Betsy, in 1975. They have two children and six grandchildren.

Reception + Dinner CELEBRATING THE LEADERSHIP OF ATA CHAIRMAN TERRY KILPATRICK “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” -Winston Churchill As a young fleet executive, ATA Chairman of the Board Terry Kilpatrick attended his first ATA convention 30 years ago, seeking to rub elbows with Alabama’s trucking industry elite. That weekend he met some of our Association’s heavy hitters of trucking, men like the late Dempsey Boyd (Boyd Bros. Transportation) and Walter Poole (Evergreen Transportation) and living legends such as James Suttles (Suttles Truck Leasing) and Harrold Sorrells (MSJ Trucking). “These were successful businessmen who offered great ideas and a deep knowledge about trucking – and they were willing to freely share that knowledge with others – including me.” Kilpatrick says. “I have always remembered and appreciated those days.” Last June, Mr. Kilpatrick was installed as ATA’s top elected leader at a ceremony at ATA’s Montgomery headquarters. His ambitious agenda for the year included building stronger public outreach programs to bring younger workers to the industry and provide the public with more understanding of trucking’s purpose and value to the state’s economy. But his crowning achievement is the creation of a charitable foundation devoted to industry promotion, research and outreach. The new organization was incorporated in Montgomery County on January 31, 2018 as the Alabama Trucking Association Foundation (or ATA Foundation, for short). It’s a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization that will “operate exclusively for charitable, scientific, literary or educational projects,” which could include seminars, conferences, lectures, classes and other forums to inform and educate the public regarding the transportation industry in Alabama, and beyond. Also, we will recognize this year’s Alabama Truck Driver of the Year longtime ABC Transportation truck driver Moses Thomas, who was recently selected by the ATA Safety and Maintenance Management Council for his commitment to industry safety and professionalism in a career that has spanned four decades and 3.7 million safe miles. Another highlight of this event is the announcement of the 2018 H. Chester Webb Award, which is this Association’s highest honor for a member. Last year’s recipient Bill Ward of Ward International Trucks will announce the winner.

Chevy 6

Stay up late with ATA and Chevy 6 Help us close out another great convention with party band legends Chevy 6. This popular act formed sometime around the spring of 1974, forged from the fraternities and bars of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Back then, most live bands followed the jammy, blues-rock blueprint of the Allman Brothers Band or ‘70s southern rock deities, Lynyrd Skynyrd, but realizing that the music of the 1950s was becoming more popular through the advent of throwback television shows like Happy Days and Sha Na Na and the success of movies like American Graffiti, it seemed a natural step to form a band that offered the best songs of that era to throngs of partying college students. Though the startup was a bit slow, mainly due to the fact that many musicians felt playing oldies was beneath them, the band finally caught traction and began to find themselves booking bigger and better things than a sweaty, beer soaked fraternity house party rooms and dive bars. Along with great musicianship and lively showmanship, what got Chevy 6 there was its use of a show band format that included a 50s revue, a soul revue, and a 60s revue, cramming each set full of only the best songs from these great eras of American popular music. During its 44 years, in one form or another the band has performed for a massive array of events, including appearances on local and regional television broadcasts, a host of private events, conventions, conferences and reunions aplenty. They’ve even made appearances at the some of the Southeast’s best nightclubs and largest music festivals.
